• How to charge a dead laptop battery. We charge the laptop: elementary rules for every day. You are here: How to charge a laptop battery directly without a laptop. Battery charging method

    The need to charge a laptop battery without a laptop is rare, but it happens. For example, when the "native" laptop connector broke or to solve their non-standard technical problems.

    Maintenance

    Is it possible to charge the battery without a laptop

    Thus, there are no technical restrictions on restoring the battery charge of a portable computer, but it should be understood that for self-connection, it is necessary to correctly manufacture the charger, and also connect the product, observing the polarity.

    To perform such actions, it is desirable to be well versed in technology and electrics, but even if there are no such skills, following the step-by-step recommendations outlined in this article will allow you to fully restore the laptop battery to working capacity.

    What are the main difficulties

    The main difficulty when trying to charge a laptop battery directly is the impossibility of making high-quality connections between the contacts of the charger and the battery terminals. When making a charger yourself, it is very difficult to set the required values \u200b\u200bof voltage and current.

    When using a standard charger, there are also difficulties. The charger plug cannot be directly connected to the batteries, and an attempt to solder the wires directly to the plus and minus of the connector will render the product unusable.

    Many laptop battery models may not have terminal markings, so it can be very difficult to connect the wires with correct polarity.

    In general, there are a lot of difficulties when trying to charge a laptop battery without a laptop, but with the right approach to solving the problem, you can perform this operation without compromising the performance of the charger and laptop.

    Ways to charge the battery without a laptop

    There are several working ways to charge the battery without a laptop, but the safest ways are to use standard charging and restore the capacity of each element separately, but we will consider all options.

    Connecting the adapter directly to the battery

    This method of charging a laptop battery from a standard adapter will allow you to fully restore battery performance. Direct charging is carried out in the following sequence:

    • Remove the battery from the laptop.
    • Determine the polarity of the terminals.
    • Connect the charger plug to the battery terminals with pieces of copper wire.

    If the polarity is not indicated on the battery case, then even on a heavily discharged battery, this parameter can be determined using a multimeter. If the terminals are protected by a plastic partition and it is impossible to get to the metal part with the tester probe, then two metal clips should be used.

    These elements should be installed one by one into the holes of the battery connector and measured with a multimeter, which must first be switched to the DC current measurement mode. After the device shows a value other than zero and there is no dash in front of the numbers, you should fix this position by bending the paper clip to which the red probe of the meter is connected.

    This contact will correspond to the plus of the power source, and the other conductor will be the minus. If the polarity is not indicated on the plug or adapter case, then a similar operation should be done with the electrical output of the charger.

    Having decided on the polarity of the battery and adapter, you can begin to connect the charger to the battery. For this purpose, it is better to use copper wire. It is advisable to use conductors with different insulation colors in order to avoid accidental errors when connecting the battery.

    In order to charge the battery, it is enough to connect the plus of the plug with the plus of the battery with one wire, and with the help of the second wire, do the same operation with respect to the negative contact.

    This design is quite dangerous, do not touch bare wires and make sure that they do not touch wood or paper.

    Disassemble the battery and charge the cells separately

    The laptop battery consists of several 18650 li-ion cells, so if the adapter is faulty or the laptop is not charging through the connector, you can disassemble the laptop battery and remove individual batteries and charge them using a conventional AA charger.

    The battery case is usually soldered in two parts, so it is enough to gently pry it in the middle with a sharp object to separate one part from the other. Then you should remove the batteries and install them in the charger.

    When the individual cells are 100% charged, the battery is assembled in the reverse order. If in this way it was necessary to restore the battery capacity only once, then the two halves of the product should be connected with glue, but if it becomes necessary to regularly charge the laptop in this way, it is better to connect the parts of the battery case with adhesive tape.

    Which laptop batteries can be charged like this

    If the battery can be removed from the laptop case, then it can be easily charged using the methods described above. Currently, there are a large number of such devices on the market, among which the following brands can be distinguished:

    • asus;
    • Acer;
    • Samsung;
    • Dell;
    • Xiaomi;
    • Lenovo;
    • Sony;

    The batteries of these laptop models can be disassembled relatively easily, so you can use separate cells to restore the charge or charge the products without disassembling the battery by connecting its contacts with the help of conductors to the corresponding contacts of the adapter.

    Things are much more complicated with laptops with built-in batteries, where you will already have to disassemble half of the device in order to remove the power source.

    Error consequences and precautions

    When using the methods described in this article to charge a laptop battery, you must take precautions. First of all, polarity reversal should be avoided.

    If connected incorrectly, you can very easily damage the battery, so before connecting the wires, you must double-check the position of the positive and negative contacts on the adapter and battery with a multimeter.

    When charging a laptop battery without a laptop, you should constantly monitor the temperature of the battery. In case of significant heating of the battery, the charger should be disconnected from the mains or disconnect the battery if the product is fully charged. You can check the charge of the power source using a conventional multimeter by switching the device to the DC current measurement mode.

    The question of how to charge a laptop battery without a laptop is relevant for those who, for example, were completely unexpectedly let down by their own charger. A computer in working condition is very necessary. How to wake up the battery in this case?

    If you remember the old days, it used to be possible to charge a computer battery using chargers designed specifically for this purpose. But now they have been out of production for a long time. And therefore, the main problem is how to properly charge the laptop battery so as not to harm it.

    The complexity of the design of lithium-ion batteries for laptops

    The first thought that comes to mind is why not take a similar battery with you as a backup? On the one hand, it is quite a logical decision. But, if you open the battery compartment of any laptop, it turns out that not everything is as simple as it seems. You will have to work very hard in order to remove the “native” laptop battery from the compartment and insert a new battery into it. Moreover, both the PC case and the battery compartment are made of lightweight plastic. If you frequently change and install a new battery, they can easily break.

    If you carefully examine the connector of such a battery, at least 7-9 output contacts are found on it, unlike a car battery, where, as you know, there are only two contacts: negative and positive. All these outputs control the process of charge-discharge of each "can" inside the battery compartment. There is also a board where the entire electronic system for protecting lithium-ion cells from overheating and deep discharge is programmed.

    For safety reasons, such a card must be installed in the battery compartment of any portable device with lithium-ion cells. Without it, they can easily explode. In "emergency" situations, the controller on the board breaks the electrical circuit and blocks the current supply.

    As you can see, replacing a laptop battery and charging it directly from some kind of external battery is not an easy task. However, if there is no other way out, then you can try to implement several methods offered by electronics lovers.

    Charging a laptop battery directly: looking for the right contacts

    When working with the battery pack, it is important to be extremely careful so as not to make a mistake in directly connecting the right contacts to the voltmeter and charger. Using the example of a lithium-ion battery pack from an Asus laptop, you can see that the connector does not have two “plus” and “minus” contacts, as, for example, on a car battery, but as many as 9 outputs.

    By the way, it should be noted that any laptop battery, regardless of the manufacturer, consists of the following elements:

    • BMS driver(aka fee);
    • battery "banks" (their number can be different, from 6 pieces or more);
    • contacts, providing both an electrical circuit and power to the elements, as well as connection to the board and laptop software - in order to control the charge-discharge process, the state of the battery and the safe operation of the device.

    So, using the Asus battery pack as an example, it can be seen that the central group of their three additional contacts is connected directly to the “banks” (one posting for two pieces). They are connected via a BMS driver to the diagnostics of the voltage indicator inside each battery compartment (a kind of internal voltmeter).

    On the left and right edges of the board, there are two more paired wires: these are also “short-circuited” signals on the board. As you can see, the function of these wires is different, and they will not help “start” the battery in order to start the process of charging it, because the board itself simply will not allow this to be done.

    In order to “start” the process, we need two of the nine wires that are not shorted to the board. If we count the connector from left to right, we get wires numbered 3 and 7. It is to these two contacts that the electrical signal comes through the base, and the transistor to which they are connected is responsible for turning on and off.

    All that needs to be done is to isolate these two contacts from nine and close them together. If the circuit is open in this particular place - no matter how hard you try, when you “poke” into other wires, you will not be able to start the battery.

    This method, in the case of working with a similar electrical circuit, is tested and quite working. And the battery itself is charged in the usual way - for example, using the Imax B6 charger and a multimeter that controls the voltage supplied to the cells.

    However, you should be aware that not all laptop batteries are built exactly according to this scheme - with the presence of unlock contacts. Otherwise, we will most likely talk about a laptop that is not equipped with such a protection system. And this means that you will have to look for the necessary contacts yourself, carefully disconnecting the battery from the computer and observing all possible safety precautions.

    How to charge a laptop battery using a charger from a car battery

    This charging method is suitable if there are no problems finding the desired “plus” and “minus” in the battery chip. The method works if the battery has stopped charging in the laptop itself, or holds a charge very little.

    In order to charge a laptop battery from a car battery, you must first unsolder the negative pole from the board and apply voltage to it using a “crocodile” from a car charger with a similar pole. We simply put the second "crocodile" on the positive pole of the battery.

    Charging is carried out as usual, with constant monitoring of current and voltage. The most suitable, as always, is the slow mode of gradual recovery. Over a period of 2 hours, the voltage, on average, rises to 13.8 V.

    The principle of how to charge a laptop battery without itself is not easy to implement if the computer owner does not have certain skills in electronics. Moreover, the microcircuits of modern Chinese laptops may differ from each other in the presence or absence of a certain protection system - given the specifics. You can not harm the battery only if you approach this issue thoughtfully. And, of course, before conducting any experiment, live communication with more experienced electronics lovers will not be superfluous.

    Finally got around to answering the question: How to charge our favorite toys such as phone, camera, mp3 players in extreme cases when the original charger is missing?

    I want to make a reservation right away that I’m not a shaman or Kashpirovsky, I couldn’t charge the battery with the power of thought, and therefore I’ll say right away: for charging, in any case, you need another source of electrical energy output voltage greater than the battery voltage * , from where we will pump energy into the battery of our device.

    *you can, of course, charge with a source whose voltage is less, but this will require a converter that will increase the voltage - I will also consider this option in this article.

    ATTENTION : Incorrect charging and handling of batteries may result in complete failure of the battery (device), or significant loss of capacity, explosion, etc. and so on. The article is written purely for informational purposes. DO NOT REPEAT!!!

    Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are most often used in mobile devices (laptops, mobile phones, PDAs and others). This is due to their advantages over the previously widely used nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) and nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries.

    I will not describe the device and the principle of operation of this type of battery, because. The internet is full of descriptions. Briefly, I would like to note only one point:

    Commercial Li-ion batteries have the most advanced protection of all battery types. As a rule, in the protection circuit of Li-ion batteries, a field-effect transistor key is used, which, when a voltage of 4.30 V is reached on the battery cell, opens and thereby interrupts the charging process. In addition, the existing thermal fuse, when the battery is heated to 90 ° C, disconnects the circuit of its load, thus providing its thermal protection. But that's not all. Some batteries have a switch that is activated when the pressure inside the case reaches a threshold level of 1034 kPa (10.5 kg / m 2), and breaks the load circuit. There is also a deep discharge protection circuit that monitors the battery voltage and breaks the load circuit if the voltage drops to 2.5 V per cell.

    So let's start with the simplest:

    The easiest way: use another charger with similar specifications. Here we may encounter the following difficulties:

    • Connector Mismatch

    This problem is easily solved in devices with a round connector and much more difficult with flat connectors.

    Let's consider in more detail this method from the practical part:

    So: according to the conditions of the problem, we have a phone, a charger from another model, the connector of which does not fit

    Phone without charger

    Charger from another model

    The characteristics of the batteries are approximately the same, from here I can conclude: the charger should be suitable for charging a phone that does not have a charger

    We will need: 2 small pieces of wire, and a tube of insulating material (for example, a piece of tube from a ballpoint pen or a piece of insulation from a wire of a suitable diameter) with an outer diameter approximately suitable for the diameter at the inlet of the phone connector

    In this example, I used a piece of tubing from a ballpoint pen. As you can see, through simple manipulations, we managed to charge a motorola phone using a charger from nokia

    1) Insert the wires into the phone jack

    2) We connect the second ends of the wires to the connector from the charger

    The task was achieved, charging went

    p.s. A few hours later, the phone showed 100% charge.

    It is much more difficult to adapt a phone where the input connector is not round, but in many cases this method also works. I'll tell you about how I did it a little later ...

    Consider the second case, which is just as easy to solve as in the first case: You need to charge your laptop The district has a lot of laptop chargers, but the connectors do not fit ..

    Here, in many cases, it is even easier than with phones. Almost all laptops (at least those laptops that I have met) have a round connector

    In the table there are several types of connectors that I came across:

    Consider the option: option 1 and the simplest situation: the diameter of the central contact on the laptop is smaller than the diameter on the charger. In this case, the charger will be freely inserted into the laptop connector, however, there will be no charging, because. there will be no contact. In this case, the problem is solved in an elementary way: several veins are taken from a thin stranded wire, inserted into the hole on the connector that comes from the PSU and connects to the laptop. If the output characteristics of the PSU are suitable for your laptop, then charging will start immediately.

    Veins from the wires are inserted into the connector

    Important: It is necessary to monitor the temperature at the PSU connection connector to the laptop, because. in case of poor contact, overheating is possible, which can lead to a breakdown of the connector on the laptop, then repair with disassembly of the laptop will be required.

    In case of heating of the connector due to poor contact, you should increase the number of veins that are inserted inside the connector.

    The second important point: you need to pay attention to the correct polarity, the polarity of the connection is usually indicated both on the laptop and on the charger, as a rule “+” is the central output, but there may be exceptions, so it’s better to play it safe

    Another easy way to determine the polarity of the connection for a particular model, if the Internet is at hand, then we ask the search engine for example for my laptop, I found a lot of pictures when I asked: “ Toshiba satellite charger pictures»

    And yet, I would like to additionally draw attention to one point, usually a sticker is glued on the back of the laptop indicating the parameters that are required from the charger, for example, this plate:

    those. in this case, a charger with an output voltage of 19 volts is required and the output current must be at least 3.16A.

    For charging, the output voltage is more critical, although a slight variation is allowed, in practice I will say that the laptop that I tested worked quite normally and was charged at a lower voltage value of 16 volts and I checked the upper limit of 22 volts.

    As for the output current from the PSU, the maximum parameter is usually indicated, i.e. if you only charge without including the laptop, then the parameter can be 2-3 times lower.

    Regarding all parameters, I will soon take additional measurements and publish them.

    Consider a similar case, only we have the opposite, the diameter of the central wire on the charger is smaller than the diameter of the central wire on the laptop.

    In this case, we do exactly the same as we did with the phone at the very beginning, we find a suitable handset and use pieces of wire to build an adapter, it will all look something like the pictures below

    Here the field for imagination is not limited, 2 pieces of wire and an empty rod from a helium pen were enough for me:

    With simple manipulations, we get something like this:

    which is inserted into the laptop connector

    If you press the wires to the table, for example, with adhesive tape and do not move the laptop, you can not only charge, but even work while the laptop is charging 🙂

    So, we examined the simplest ways, when, according to the conditions, we have almost everything we need (a charger that is suitable in terms of parameters), we only needed to adapt the connectors.

    Little by little I will move on to more difficult conditions.

    We will consider situations where you have to remove the battery for charging.

    With an external charger at your disposal, you can easily charge the batteries of many devices.

    For example, I came across this device:

    We look at the characteristics

    As you can see, the output voltage range is quite large from 4.2 to 8.4 Volts.

    First task: to determine the polarity on the terminals, which can be solved in many ways

    Second task: connect the charger terminals to the battery terminals

    Here I will consider the example of the following battery:

    For example, I used a piece of cardboard, two wires and a piece of electrical tape, with which I wrapped the contacts attached to the cardboard around the battery:

    A glowing red LED in this example means that the charging process is in progress.

    If the article turned out to be useful, you have questions or do not agree with this article, please. Thank you.

    as they say: to defeat the enemy you need to know him from the inside)

    Let's now try to charge the laptop battery without a charger. After looking for information about the battery device and not finding anything, I decided to disassemble the battery pack. Let's see what it consists of:

    toshiba satellite laptop battery

    Let's see what kind of animal 🙂

    As can be seen from the characteristics, the voltage is 10.8 Volts, the capacity is 4 Ah, i.e. theoretically, it can actually be charged from a car battery with a voltage of 12 volts

    As you can see from the photo, the battery pack firstly consists of 6 individual cells, which are connected in pairs in parallel, and the resulting 3 cells are connected in series.

    The most difficult thing is to understand the connection diagram, which is intertwined with electronics. those. the question is, what wires to connect to so that the battery does not turn into a brick and, moreover, provide charging?

    Here it is the connector itself, where I will try to apply current to ensure battery charge

    A safe, but long and tedious way is to charge each pair of cells separately, you don’t need to solder the cells, you need some kind of current source with a voltage of 4 to 8 volts and it is advisable to use a ballast, you can use any charger for Li batteries.

    And I wanted to run quickly:

    At the first place

    • I need to charge my laptop but the charger is broken *

    Probably the best advice: Repair the charger or purchase a similar but serviceable one

    In second place:

    • you need to charge the laptop there is a stationary computer *

    Unfortunately, the power supply outputs stabilized 12 V, 5 V, there are other voltages, but 12 volts is not enough to charge a laptop

    Here you can consider the option or get inside the power supply and do a rework, to entrain the output voltage, you can also assemble a converter with 12, for example, 19 volts (maybe I’ll try to test it in practice closer to winter and of course I’ll share the results) or using a voltage of 5 V through ballast resistor to charge the elements separately - as described in the last case.

    • Yes: The device that needs to be charged, there is a charge from another device that matches the characteristics but does not fit the connector.

    Below is a way to temporarily repair a broken wire from a charger

    Recently, various compact mobile electronic devices have become very popular, allowing you to use all the services and entertainment of the Internet without being "tied" to a specific place - smartphones, tablets, communicators and, above all, laptops.

    Of course, in order for mobile devices to be fully mobile, they must be equipped with their own sources of electricity.

    This is especially true for the most energy-consuming mobile devices - laptops. The energy source for almost all modern laptops is lithium-ion batteries.

    Lithium-ion batteries have replaced nickel-cadmium batteries and have almost completely conquered the mobile device market due to a number of advantages, including:

    • long service life;
    • light weight;
    • compact size;
    • lower cost;
    • short charging time;
    • longer operating time on a single charge;
    • lower price.

    However, at the same time, there are certain nuances in the operation of lithium-ion batteries that must be taken into account if we want the laptop to serve us longer without replacing the battery, because the cost of a new battery can reach a third of the cost of an entire mobile computer. So, we find out how to charge a laptop correctly.

    Secrets of proper charging

    Figuring out how to properly charge a laptop battery was not so easy. There are a lot of opinions on this matter. As you know, everyone knows how to play football, treat any disease and raise other people's children. Nowadays, this list of "general knowledge" can be added to the knowledge of how to charge a laptop battery.

    What you just do not have to hear about this, including completely opposite opinions. For example, that the battery must certainly be charged only after it is completely discharged, or, conversely, the battery should never be allowed to discharge below a certain limit. So who do you believe?

    It would seem, what is easier, to take and read the instructions from the manufacturer, which necessarily accompanies the product. Only here is the problem - the instructions, as a rule, in this aspect are concise, just obscenely. Sometimes information about charging is limited to the fact that for this the battery must be connected to the mains. Nothing to say, valuable information.

    There is reason to believe that this state of affairs is by no means accidental: the income from the sale of components and spare parts can sometimes exceed the profit from the sale of the main product.

    For example, one can recall a fact that is not advertised, but by no means a secret: the lion's share of the profits of printer manufacturing companies is not brought by the printers themselves. The maximum profit is derived from the sale of cartridges and consumables.

    Of course, the percentage of profit from the sale of batteries relative to the total turnover is not so large, but if we are talking about turnovers in the billions, then even fractions of a percent will amount to millions and hundreds of thousands. Since we cannot count on the help of manufacturers, we turn to specialists for help.

    Before we talk about properly charging a laptop battery, it is necessary to touch on general operating issues. For a lithium-ion battery, the temperature regime is important, the optimum ambient temperature is + 15-25 degrees, the limit is + 5-45 degrees.

    Under no circumstances should a battery cooled below zero degrees Celsius be used. If a laptop or battery is brought in from the street, be sure to let the device warm up for at least an hour.

    When using a mobile computer at temperatures of 30 degrees or more, it is advisable to use special stands. In addition to the passive effect of providing an additional path for the cooling air to enter. Such stands can be equipped with an additional battery-powered cooler connected to the device via a USB drive.

    As to how to produce charging the laptop battery correctly, here, experts are almost unanimous: both those who advise completely discharging the battery and those who suggest keeping the power source constantly charged are equally mistaken.

    The optimal battery level is 40-80%. Maintaining the charge level within these limits can increase the life of the cell by 3-4 times, up to 1200-1500 full discharge-charge cycles.

    There are no problems with tracking the lower charge limit, for this it is enough to set up the appropriate notifications. But how to catch the moment when the laptop is 80% charged? After all, even special software that limits the level of charge will be useless if charging takes place in the off state (and this is exactly how it usually happens).

    There is no single answer to this question. Some people recommend using timers, for example, in a mobile phone, in order to detect the time the battery is charging and then use these values. Agree, it is also not the most convenient way.

    In any case, it should be noted that the level of charge and (in particular) the remaining time until the battery is discharged, which the computer “shows” to us, may differ from reality. To clarify the picture, an operation called " battery calibration».

    To calibrate, it is enough to continuously work on the laptop from the state of the power source " fully charged"To the state" full zero "(Although it's better to stop at 2-3% and complete the work in normal mode). A full charge-discharge cycle once every couple of months will not cause much harm to the battery.

    This point must be taken into account when starting work with the device. To charge a new laptop properly, place it without turning it on, charging at night. After that, when you turn on the device, 100% of the charge on the screen will be guaranteed to correspond to 100% in the energy storage.

    You can also use special calibrator programs that, without human intervention, “drive” the computer for a couple of hours and calibrate.

    Does this advice make sense at all? After all, the limits of the optimal charge (40-80%) leave the user less than half of the possible operating time of the device, that is, depending on the tasks performed, 1.5-2.5 hours. Does it make sense for a mobile computer that can be mobile for a couple of hours at best?

    If the laptop is used as a stationary “machine”, it is better to disconnect the 50-70% charged battery and store it separately. At the same time, do not forget to connect the battery to the device at least once a month and let it work in the mode of full charge-full discharge-recharge up to 50-70%.

    Important! If you are using your mini computer with the battery disconnected, be sure to take care of an uninterruptible power supply so that a sudden power outage does not become fatal to the device and unsaved data.

    What is the main advantage of a laptop? Of course, this is its ability to work autonomously, for which the laptop battery is responsible. In order for such a battery to serve properly, and the laptop to work without being connected to the mains for quite a long time, it is imperative to pay attention to the issue of charging the laptop. About, how to charge a laptop right, let's talk about it.

    Modern laptop models usually use lithium-ion batteries. Such batteries, unlike already obsolete nickel ones, are characterized by the absence of a "memory effect", therefore they do not need to be fully discharged before each new charge. However, lithium-ion laptop batteries still have their own characteristics and charging rules.

    First it is worth noting that even the best lithium-ion laptop battery wear out and over time, in any case, it loses part of its original capacity, and sooner or later completely exhausts its resource. In this case, the battery has to be replaced, since it can no longer provide even a few minutes of battery life for the laptop.

    If the laptop battery is used correctly, in particular, by properly discharging and charging it, then its service life can be significantly extended. Therefore, in this case, you will not have to buy a new laptop battery soon. To charge your laptop correctly, you should remember a few basic principles.

    You can start charging your laptop when using lithium-ion batteries at virtually any battery level, but usually experienced users recommend performing this procedure when a threshold of 30-40% is reached. If necessary, you can start charging the laptop battery even if its charge level is 70-80% of full.

    If the laptop battery is not used constantly, i.e. the laptop is connected to the mains more often than it works offline, then it makes sense disconnect a 50-70% charged battery away from the device and store it separately. True, it is also impossible to leave the battery inactive for a long time - this can lead to a reduction in its service life. In this regard, it is recommended to connect the battery to the laptop at least once every 2-3 weeks and use the offline mode.

    When using a laptop do not allow overheating or hypothermia of the battery, as temperatures that are too high or too low will adversely affect the battery's ability to "hold" a charge. Once every 2-3 months, it is worth cleaning the battery contacts from plaque resulting from the oxidation reaction, since such a plaque is the ability of the battery to provide long-term battery life of the laptop.

    Not more than once a month, you can carry out the procedure of the so-called battery calibration, first completely discharging it, giving it the maximum load, and then fully charging it. A similar procedure is necessary to correct the operation of the battery controller, which informs the user about the battery level and the number of hours of battery life. By the way, in many laptops, a battery calibration function is available in the BIOS, which can be used instead of the above procedure.

    If you know how to charge your laptop correctly, you can avoid annoying problems with the rapid depletion of its battery life. Additionally, it will help extend the life of your laptop battery. following some rules use it offline. In particular, it is recommended to reduce the screen brightness for the duration of the battery life of the device to save battery power, and also not to use those programs that are very energy-intensive.

    How can you charge a laptop battery without it

    Those who often go on vacation or business trips know how useful spare laptop batteries can sometimes be. When operating a laptop without connecting to a power outlet, the battery energy quickly runs out and this is where another battery will come in very handy. But how do you charge all those extra batteries? After all, taking turns inserting and removing them from a laptop is a bad idea. The battery case and the compartment for it on the laptop are made of plastic, which means that with the constant change of batteries, all this will quickly wear out. Today we will talk about how to charge a laptop battery without a laptop. We must say right away that you do all the described manipulations at your own peril and risk, since safe battery charging can only be carried out in a laptop or using factory chargers.

    How to get around a laptop when charging its battery? As you probably know, there are many pins on a laptop battery connector. In most cases, these are 6, 7 or 9 pins. All of them are designed to control the laptop and the operating system for how charging is going. At first glance, it is not even clear how to put such a battery on charge. This is not a car battery, where there are only two conclusions and it is impossible to make a mistake.

    Previously, on sale you could find devices that allowed you to charge the battery without a laptop. They were not produced by all manufacturers, but only by some. But now that's not there either. Therefore, the user with this problem is left alone.

    On various electronics forums, you can find circuits designed to charge some batteries from various manufacturers. But finding something for your battery is almost impossible.

    Meanwhile, a large number of pins on the pad is not an accident. All of them have their purpose. The rechargeable battery consists of several lithium batteries that are connected in series and in parallel.

    Lithium batteries can easily ignite and even explode when overcharged. If they are subjected to a deep discharge, they may become unusable. Therefore, the laptop battery has multi-level protection and voltage control of each lithium cell. The controller controls the discharge and charge of lithium batteries. This is the board that is inside the battery case.

    Since lithium power sources have been used in laptop batteries, they have been equipped with charge and discharge controllers. They are also often referred to as BMS boards or drivers. This is a battery protection board. Its purpose is to control the process of charging and discharging the laptop battery. When charging the BMS, the board monitors the charge level of the lithium cells and, when they reach full charge, disconnects the battery from the supplied power. This prevents overcharging, heating and ignition of lithium cells. For these purposes, thermal protection is provided, which, when a critical temperature is reached, disconnects the battery from power.

    During the discharge process, the BMS driver controls the degree of discharge of lithium batteries and disconnects the battery at a certain voltage. This is to ensure that the battery does not experience deep discharge.

    In general, the question of how to charge the battery without a laptop interested me and I began to dig in this direction. Unfortunately, there is very little information on the Internet on this topic. I watched all the videos on Youtube on this topic. I found a similar problem where the author explains how to charge the battery from an Asus laptop without the laptop itself. You can find a link to the video in the text of the article or in the "Video materials on the topic" block at the very bottom of the material. You can read more about why.

    The Asus battery described in this video has a 9-pin connector. The author of the video found out that two extreme contacts on both sides are 2 pluses and 2 minuses. Three contacts in the middle are designed to read information on 3 pairs of cells that make up the battery. The remaining two contacts were responsible for turning on and off the laptop battery. So they had to be closed directly in order to charge the battery without a laptop.

    How to charge laptop battery directly?

    What is required to charge the battery without a laptop?

    In order to charge the battery without a laptop, you will need the following materials and tools:

    power adapter. This can be a regular laptop power adapter or any other that has a voltage higher than the battery rating of your laptop. Power should be 60-90 watts. In my case, the rating is 11.1 volts. Since I had a regular adapter available, I used it;

    • copper wire with a cross section of 1─2 mm;
    • resistance. It is better if it is a tuning resistor with which it will be possible to regulate the current supplied to the battery;
    • soldering iron, flux, tin;
    • Multimeter for monitoring the voltage at the battery terminals.

    Charging laptop battery directly

    In my case, the problem was that the Lenovo IdeaPad Z565 laptop battery has a connector for connecting to a laptop with 7 pins. No matter how much I scoured the Internet, I did not find anything reasonable on this connector.

    Mostly just general information, disassembly of batteries, etc. Nothing to help on the case. The connector looks like this.

    Two from the output along the edges are plus and minus, and three in the middle are responsible for assembling the elements. There were no two contacts for unlocking, as on Asus. And I logically assumed that there is simply no such protection on the Lenovo battery. And he turned out to be right.

    To begin with, I discharged the battery right in the laptop until it turned off. I disconnected the battery and measured the voltage at the positive and negative terminals with a multimeter. It was 10.5 volts. By the way, be sure to set the polarity. There were no "+" "-" markings on my battery. This can be done with the same multimeter when measuring voltage. If the value is given with a plus, then the polarity of the probes is correct. If negative, the polarity is reversed.

    The distance between the terminals of the connector is small and the standard probe of the multimeter did not fit. For convenience, I screwed the needles to the probes with electrical tape.

    The power adapter, as already mentioned, I used the regular one from the Lenovo IdeaPad Z565 laptop. Its output voltage is 20 volts, and its power is 90 watts. That is, it is capable of charging with a current of 4.5 amperes. But I didn't dare turn it on. Indeed, in a laptop, the battery is charged under hardware and software control, and 7 pins on the connector are not at all for beauty.

    So I decided to start by limiting the current to 1.5 amps. Therefore, a resistance of 60 ohms was inserted into the gap of the positive wire. To do this, I took a construction resistor, soldered wires to its terminals and, using a multimeter, set the resistance to 60 ohms.

    I connected two wires to the extreme positive and negative terminals. I did not solder anything, I just inserted it so that they touched the contacts.

    I also removed plus and minus from the power adapter. The positive wire was connected inside, and the negative wire was connected to the outer shell.

    In the photo below you can see what it looks like in reality.

    Then I assembled the entire system according to the diagram below.

    This is what the system looked like in real life.

    Then I turned on the adapter with a network and charging with a current of 1.5 amperes began. At the same time, just in case, I controlled the temperature of the battery, but its temperature did not rise above room temperature. Only the resistor was heated, but such is his work. Periodically monitored the voltage at the outputs. After turning on the adapter, it jumped to 11.25 volts and began to grow slowly. After about forty minutes, I lowered the resistance of the trimmer to 45, and then to 30 ohms. As a result, the current was increased first to 2 and then to 3 amperes.
    The nominal capacity of my laptop battery is 4.3 mAh. In such conditions, the battery was charged a little more than two hours. During this time, the voltage increased to about 12.4 volts and stopped there.

    Later, on some forums on radio electronics, I found information that this behavior indicates that the protection of the BMS controller was triggered.

    There can be two options: the voltage stops growing or increases to the nominal voltage of the power adapter. After that, the increase in voltage should stop. If it continues to grow, then the controller is faulty or missing. Such batteries can also be charged in this way, but if you miss the end of charging, overheating and ignition of lithium cells can result.

    The table below shows the threshold voltages when charging batteries with different ratings.

    As a result, after charging, I inserted the battery into the laptop and the charge there was about 95%. Apparently, the BMS controller worked a little earlier. Perhaps when charging in a laptop, the charging process is interrupted a little differently. But in any case, such an undercharge for lithium batteries is not critical. They function normally at a charge level of 15-80%. Much worse and more dangerous for them is reloading. After the procedure, you can still use it if the operating system displays messages about the need to replace the battery.

    You probably have a question: “Why a resistor?”. Yes, you can connect the wires directly from the adapter and it will charge to the fullest. In my case, this is due to the consideration to keep the battery safe and sound. And to everyone who will try this method, I advise you to connect the battery through a resistor. After all, if suddenly for some reason the current jumps, the resistor will burn out, and the battery will be safe.

    What is the result? We found out that it is possible to charge the battery without a laptop and it is not very difficult. In addition, we learned that the Lenovo IdeaPad Z565 battery is missing a battery on/off switch. It has 7 pins on the connector versus 9 for protected batteries. I'm not sure if this is the same state of affairs on all 7-pin batteries. Therefore, before you charge your laptop battery like this, find out the pinout.

    When buying a laptop, you need to be able to charge the battery - correctly.

    The first check is carried out already when buying a mobile computer. After connecting the netbook to the mains, turn it on. Allow its battery to fully charge. Now look at the indicator readings in the system tray. The battery is considered to be of low quality if its charge level does not rise above 98%. It is better to refuse such a mobile computer immediately. In general, you need to learn how to properly charge a netbook battery. In addition, to maximize battery life as much as possible, it is not necessary to use it when you can connect the computer to the mains.

    It is not recommended to store a completely discharged battery separately from the computer. It is better to recharge it by 40-60% before removing it. Even if a mobile computer is used most of the time at home, at least once every two to three months, try to connect a battery to it

    And if you take care of purchasing a spare battery in advance, then in the future you won’t have to - look for a similar model in all stores, and the netbook will be able to do without the need for recharging for a long time

    How to properly charge a netbook battery.

    The standard of quality and popularity in laptops today is the lithium-ion battery (Li-Ion). They are large in volume and light in weight. The disadvantages of this type of batteries are high cost and a relatively small temperature range for operation. In order for the battery to last longer, you need to properly charge the laptop for the first time.

    It will take

    Laptop;
    - Charger;
    - socket;
    - laptop user manual

    Instruction
    1
    Make sure your laptop has a lithium-ion battery. See this characteristic in the user manual or on the box from the computer. The manufacturer indicates the type of battery with the letter combination Li-Ion.
    2
    A new laptop usually has an empty or partially charged battery. The Li-Ion system does not have the "memory effect" of earlier production devices. Also, the next generation of batteries - lithium polymer (Li-Poly) - are not affected by this action. But in order not to bring down the system, you need to properly charge the laptop for the first time.
    3
    Without turning on the computer, connect the charger to it and leave it to charge for the first time overnight. So - guaranteed to get the most charged battery. If you couldn’t resist and turned on the laptop, after 10-20 minutes at the first charge, the battery icon may show 100% readiness. Turn off the computer, remove the battery, wait a few seconds. Insert the battery into place. Connect your laptop to the charger. The battery may become very hot during charging.
    4
    In order for the battery of a new laptop to reach its maximum capacity, it must be "trained". After overnight charging, disconnect the power supply from the network and work on the computer offline until the battery is completely discharged. At night, reconnect the computer to the network. Do these manipulations several times (3–5) to develop the battery well.
    5
    It is worth bearing in mind that a new battery charges and discharges faster. The actual time of work on the computer in offline mode at first may not correspond to the characteristics specified by the manufacturer. Do not rush to the store: after a few full charges, the battery can easily withstand the specified time

    Again in short sentences:
    1. Without connecting the network adapter, completely discharge the laptop (netbook) (until the laptop itself turns off)
    2. Without turning on the laptop, put it on charge and charge it to full + keep it on charge for a few more hours. For example, from 12-14 hours or more
    3. Disconnect the charger and work on the laptop until it is completely discharged.
    4. Repeat this cycle 3 times (but no half-charges, only until full)
    For prophylaxis, 2-3 times a year, carry out a cycle: discharge - charge (3 times) Then even "lousy" battery cells will behave satisfactorily.

    Disconnecting the battery for its safety is not necessary, because. It's pretty hard to mess it up if you use it right.

    How to properly charge your laptop to extend battery life

    When buying a laptop, portable device owners face one of the hottest topics of debate - how to properly charge a laptop. Someone says that the battery lasts longer if you remove it from the computer while it is running from the mains, or advises discharging and charging the battery to the end, while someone proves the opposite. The question is really interesting and important, so we tried to figure out how to properly charge a laptop in fact.

    Do I need to remove the battery from my laptop?

    All laptop batteries are designed for a certain number of charge cycles - we will not give numbers, they can vary greatly. Each such cycle is equal to one full discharge of the battery to zero and a further charge to one hundred percent. A discharge to 50% and a further charge to 100% is equal to half a cycle. Over time, each such cycle reduces the capacity of the battery.

    Previously, there was such a problem as the “battery memory effect”, which suffered from nickel-metal hybrid and nickel-cadmium batteries. With incomplete discharge-charging (from 0 to 100%), they “forgot” their capacity and began to charge worse and hold the charge worse. However, now this problem of capacity loss no longer exists, as modern devices use completely different batteries, namely lithium-ion and lithium-polymer.

    Also, modern batteries do not overcharge, because when the charge reaches 100%, the power controller turns off the current supply. But the debate about how to properly charge a laptop still remains.

    • So, the answer is: you don’t need to remove the battery from the laptop during mains operation! Rather, it is necessary, but in some cases: for example, if you are going to work at a computer for a long time. This is due to the fact that, being constantly charged, the battery is under high voltage, which "ages" the battery. It is also better to remove the battery if the room is hot and it gets very hot - this also leads to loss of capacity and battery wear. For example, temperatures above 45 degrees generally contribute to battery degradation. Computer games and video work also often lead to overheating of the laptop.

    If you work with text, watch pictures or movies on the Internet, for a not too long time, then it is not necessary to remove the battery, since the built-in controller will automatically limit the current supply.

    Another option when you need to remove the battery is when you send it to the "closet" for long-term storage, for example, when you go on vacation. It is important to do it right: charge the battery up to 40-50% and put it in a cool, dark place - this will help protect the lithium battery chemistry from destruction. But inactivity should not be too long - depending on the remaining charge, from 5 months to six months (with a loss of about 8% of the charge per month). After this period, the battery must be properly charged.

    How to charge the battery correctly

    We have already found out that training modern batteries by repeating a full charge cycle is useless and even harmful, since deep discharge wears out the battery, and modern batteries do not have the effect of capacity loss. Experts have empirically come to the conclusion (although disputes still do not subside) that it is most correct to charge a laptop partially, that is, without falling below the 20% mark and not exceeding 85%.

    It is worth noting that although high temperatures contribute to the wear of the battery, low temperatures also reduce the capacity of the device. The ideal option is to keep the laptop warm, around 21-25 degrees Celsius. This is true not only for laptops, but also for smartphones - after a long stay in the cold, they lose battery capacity and performance, so it's better to put them in a bag or inside jacket pocket.

    And, of course, you should not allow physical damage to the battery so that it serves you for a long time, so try not to drop the laptop or a separate battery on the floor.

    How to Save Battery Life

    We found out how to properly charge a laptop, but it would be nice to know how to extend the life of a laptop battery by reducing the power consumption of the charge. There are several ways:

    If you are interested in understanding how modern lithium batteries are arranged, which your laptop is also equipped with, and to learn more about how it is charged, we advise you to watch this video, where the author tells technical information about the Li-Ion battery device in a simple and understandable language:

    Many laptop owners are interested in how to charge a laptop battery. In this regard, on the Internet you can find completely opposite opinions, and manufacturers often give very brief recommendations that do not give a complete answer to the question posed. The problem is that different types of batteries have a different principle of operation, so the charging requirements will be different. Let's take a closer look at the basic rules of operation.

    Battery Charging Rules

    Most modern laptops are equipped with lithium-ion batteries. On the net, you can find the opinion that they require a full discharge and a full charge in order to extend the service life. This belief is fundamentally wrong for lithium-ion batteries: unlike nickel-cadmium batteries, such batteries do not have a memory effect, so when they are not completely discharged, their capacity does not decrease, which means that there is no point in waiting until the battery is completely discharged.

    How to properly charge a laptop battery? The optimal operating mode of a lithium-ion battery is no more than 80% and no less than 40%. If the charge is constantly within these limits, the duration of the lithium-ion battery increases to 1200-1500 operating cycles, that is, it increases by 3-4 times. For the owner, this is a significant savings: it will take a very long time to change the battery.

    Naturally, it is difficult for the user to constantly monitor the charge level, especially since there are very few workable programs for monitoring the battery status. The lower limit of work is monitored by notifications: the system will give a signal when the charge is within the lower mark. The top level is much more difficult to trace, since programs cannot signal if the laptop is charging while it is turned off.

    If the device is used as a desktop computer, it is recommended to disconnect the battery when the charge level is 50-70%. To prevent deterioration of battery performance, it must be charged and discharged at least twice a month.

    Additional Battery Rules

    Here are a few more helpful tips to extend battery life:

    • Lithium-ion batteries cannot be used in sub-zero temperatures, as this will rapidly degrade their performance.
    • Also, their temperature should not exceed 50 degrees. It is undesirable to leave the battery near heaters and in the open summer sun.

    • The battery loses capacity if it is left in a discharged state for a long time. The optimal charge level for storage is 50-70%, while it is undesirable to store it for a long time without using it at all.

    Look at the plate prepared for us - it clearly shows the dependence of battery life on charging

    • You can charge the battery almost as much as you like and it will not cause much harm to it thanks to the controller. When fully charged, the control system changes the matrix operation mode, so even when fully charged, the device will not start to discharge by itself. Still, it is undesirable to constantly maintain the battery at 100%: when using a laptop as a desktop computer, it is better to disconnect the battery.

    All these rules contribute to a significant increase in the life of the device, so it does not have to be changed quickly. Modern lithium-ion batteries are widely used precisely because of the absence of the memory effect and the possibility of long use.

    Important! If the laptop is running on mains without a battery, you need to take care of an uninterruptible power supply to avoid losing important data during a sudden power outage.
