    Huawei Honor 4C - Owner's Diary

    05.08.2016

    Out of time

Sometimes you catch yourself thinking that you would gladly buy this or that device and take it into your arsenal. Possible usage scenarios creep into your head, and when studying in absentia, sitting at the monitor, you see nothing but the undeniable advantages of your potential gadget in comparison with the current one. But then the mind takes its toll, and you start looking for pitfalls, paying attention to obvious or hidden shortcomings, and in the end you come to a real comparison and conclusions. Conclusions: what real advantages over your current smartphone will you get if you choose a new one?! And then, in general, it turns out that another idea to change your fully functional gadget for something, as at first it seemed more advanced, fails and turns out to be hopelessly meaningless. For the current everyday smartphone at the moment largely or completely suits me.

    Sometime before

Day after day, my pocket pulls away the large and heavy Zenfone 2 ZE550ML, choosing which, I clearly understood what I would have to face. But if the transition from Moto G 2013 to Asus was fully justified in all its parameters, then where should I go next, when I have at my disposal, in principle, a device that is productive for me, not a gamer ?!

When two gigabytes of RAM is enough, is it worth looking for 3 or 4 ?! When the built-in drive leaves me 11 gigs, and the slot allows me to expand them up to 64 more, do I need to think about the increase in this indicator too ?! When the cameras give out good and even good shots for me personally, there is a risk of completely changing your "telephone box" for something indigestible in terms of the resulting pictures. When the other indicators of my smartphone are also at a decent level, is it worth improving each of them separately?! Even the compromise display resolution of 720p on 5.5 inches and the huge dimensions of the device itself do not upset, I'm already used to them, then what else should I dream about ?! Guess?!

That's right, it's autonomy. While I hopefully wait for the weather by the sea, that is, updating the system to version 6.0, without ceasing to believe that at least something will be fixed there, the battery continues to mercilessly lose its capacity from double charging a day. Not every day, but quite often, that's how many times a day I have to recharge the battery on my Zenfone 2.

Now, imagine, the "savior" comes to the fore - Huawei Honor 4C Pro, a more recent version of last year's affordable smartphone. Here, it seems to you that everything is in order with the parameters, even the thickness does not bother, my Asus is still a donut. And when all this charm is inscribed in a five-inch case, it seems that I have found the perfect solution. But... remember what I wrote about at the beginning?! That's right, the mind spoke in me and I began to slowly divert this idea. Until a certain day.

The day before the first day

Unexpectedly, one of my acquaintances decided to exchange gadgets for a while. At that time, he became interested in one of my devices, and he, in turn, offered last year's Honor 4C. Not without a share of doubts, I began to think: why do I need this ?! Presumed scenarios for further events began to creep into my head almost immediately: if I agree, then I will spend a month or two with as my main communication device and, based on it, I will finally decide whether I need the same smartphone, only in the Pro version.

Option two! I did not like Honor - I'm just changing back, taking out of all this some experience of using smartphones of the Honor brand, and forming my own view of this cohort of devices. Let the entire line not be leveled by one copy, but at least I will have an idea about them. Second - I liked Honor 4C. Again, I gain some experience, draw conclusions and ... again return my smartphone and the hero of the review to its rightful owner, after which I go to the store for the Pro version.

So I decided to accept the offer.

    Day 1. Receiving

The device that I intended to receive, according to the owner, should be relatively new, about three months from the date of purchase, which had not seen falls on the asphalt, did not know the hands of a service center employee, and did not swim even in shallow water. How things really are, I just had to find out.

Finally, the smartphone is in my hands. It's on, but I want to look at its appearance first. In appearance, the phone looks like an unremarkable bar with a plastic cover, decorated to look like some kind of fabric. It fits into the hand like a glove, it doesn’t feel heavy or light, as far as it looks, it weighs so much. The back surface is corrugated into a small notch, it is pleasant to the touch, I like this approach, it is much better than boring soft-touch and plastic pseudo-leather. Traces from touches on the body are visible, but not in large numbers. The Honor logo, shiny and slightly recessed, turns out to be all polluted with banal dust.

Noteworthy is the absence of scratches on the glass, which are especially noticeable under the scorching sun. According to the owner, he shot the film quite recently, but it does not matter to me whether he is telling the truth or not. If so, then it means that I get an ideal-looking screen, albeit mercilessly collecting prints, but obviously smeared with some kind of simple coating for easy sliding. If his words are not true, then the glass is what you need here, it does not collect scratches from scratch, you can safely refuse films.

Out of habit, I tap the protective glass twice, but, surprisingly, nothing happens. It's strange, it seems that according to the reviews it's also possible to unlock the display, it should be unchecked in the menu, then I'll check it. But even so, the power button lies exactly under the thumb of the right hand or under the index finger of the left. It protrudes well over the body, but does not have a clear move and, unfortunately, shakes a little, but I will not call it a disadvantage as such. The volume control is also convenient, and the swing is again in my favorite place - just above the power button. The remaining elements are scattered around the body in the usual sequence. The camera is in the back in the corner, the connectors are at the top and bottom, as is usually the case. Nothing broken, not broken, not shattered, the phone was used carefully. I don’t see any compartments for a SIM card - the case is collapsible.

Only removing the back cover, which also covers the ends, is not so easy right away. It holds tightly, and the manufacturer did not provide recesses for prying. What to do with it and how to open it?! Yes, as it turns out, there is no temptation to once again remove the lid, but every trip inside is a whole story. History, however, does not pretend to frequent repetition. I don’t install a flash drive yet, but a SIM card to check the quality of the connection, yes. There are three compartments in total: two micro-SIMs, and one for a memory card. I didn’t like the slots of a strange design at all, not only is it impossible to understand how deep you need to push the cards, but you can’t pull anything out of these compartments without a sharp object. Yes, this is not an everyday story, set and forget, but even with this calculation, Huawei, why make it so inconvenient ?!

Under the scorching sun, the screen hopelessly dims, as if it lacks brightness and it is set at best to half of the average maximum value. Imagine my surprise when I observe that this is the highest threshold. Not that nothing is visible on the screen at all - it is visible, but the image fades noticeably under bright rays, more than on most smartphones that fell into my hands.

Most likely, such restrictions are not imposed by chance, but in order to save the life resources of the device. So that the user does not feel disadvantaged, Huawei decided to partly alleviate the blame for the reduced brightness with some strange option - "improving image clarity in the sun." I must admit that the move is not the best, because this "improving clarity" entails a qualitative reduction in the picture. It feels like someone played with filters in a photo editor and gave out what happened, like some kind of know-how.

This concludes my acquaintance with the phone. First impressions are mixed, but there are a number of pleasant moments: the convenience of the case itself.

Day 2. First setup and memory

Some time has passed since I received it, just in case, I reset the settings again, installed the most unusual applications - nothing interesting, it will take a long time to fully study.

From the first minutes of use, Honor 4C gives the impression of a quality device that is worth the money. At home, the brightness is no longer so critical, but a decent picture is noticeable, with decent viewing angles, a clear and responsive sensor - everything that owners first of all pay attention to captivates with its solid performance.

But behind the external embellishments, the stuffing of the smartphone is hidden, which, by the way, is not as unrestrainedly good as its exterior.

We are talking, of course, about the amount of memory on board the device. If the full order is fixed with the operational one, not only in nominal value, but also in real values, then with the constant there is clearly an embarrassment, and quite a significant one at that.

I'll start with something pleasant, namely, that out of 2 gigs for the needs of the user, even after installing all the necessary programs, 1.1 GB still remains, which is generally fantastic for a green robot, redrawn beyond recognition by the manufacturer. The result is truly respectable, and if the built-in drive supported the success of the RAM module, then I could close my diary right now and recommend Honor 4C for purchase. Of the eight installed gigabytes, in reality, I observe only 3.65 GB, and they are already half occupied out of the box. In total, buying even last year's, but quite a modern smartphone (look again at its technical characteristics), you get only 2 gigabytes of permanent memory! Two!

I already see how many readers are rapidly losing interest in this device and closing my story, but for those who still decided to stay, I express my deep gratitude for their attention and continue.

At first, the picture I saw amazed me. Until now, I considered devices with 8 nominal gigabytes of internal storage quite suitable for real life. Today, I'm starting to notice the opposite and understand that not only a full-fledged Windows system can grow by more than half of the internal memory, but also the well-known Android to all of us.

I immediately noticed that there was an option in the system settings: installation on an external card by default. But it works, I must say, not the way we expect. A heavy game without the ability to download and unpack directly on the internal memory, the smartphone automatically places on an external drive, traditionally leaving some crumbs inside the device. But applications have to be transferred manually, and many softs, as you know, do not know how to do this, and therefore it turns out that 2 GB remains for almost all the software you installed! With this download to the SD card, Huawei is trying to make amends with users again, but what prevented it from just not messing up, please tell me?!

The cry of the soul is not the best place in the description of a technical device, but without emotions you can’t really tell about such a smartphone.

    Day 3. Attention to detail

Now I don’t even remember when I first managed to know the beauty of the notification indicator. This tiny LED has become a truly simple and ingenious solution for both "dependant" people on the network and for time-saving users. There is no need for a second screen, special curves on the main display, windows inside the case - a simple LED indicator surpasses all other options with its elegance and energy efficiency. But the most precious twinkling light is the one that can shine in different colors and is configured inside the smartphone. My new gadget carries on board this indispensable feature, but not to the full extent. Unfortunately, the color of the glow is not adjustable, but it is able to flicker in various shades. So over time, you just get used to how the LED lights up with one or another missed action.

The smartphone menu includes a very important item regarding just notifications, which is called their center. In it, you can assign callsigns from any of the installed applications in detail: whether to display them in a pop-up window, on the lock screen, etc.

Returning to the ergonomics of the smartphone case, I have been turning the Honor 4C in my hands for a couple of days now and I can say that it is not as pleasant and comfortable as the Wileyfox Swift that recently flew into my light. The smartphone, which made a lot of noise mainly because of its price, turned out to be so convenient that you don’t want to let it out of your hands at all. Having learned in comparison a certain slipperiness and angularity of a smartphone from Huawei, I still cannot call it unsuccessful. It is moderately comfortable and about the same outwardly good.

And to make it look really good, I decided to take a toothpick and a small piece of tape to clean the rear Honor logo from dust that had eaten into the recesses of the letters. One toothpick only collected dirt in a heap, but almost did not pull it out of the "chute". That's when I needed the tape, which, to my surprise, glued part of the shiny "h" onto itself. Either I chose the wrong method, or the inscription is so carelessly applied - there is only one conclusion. I was even more annoyed by this logo on the back.

After that, I tried to bring all the letters to a common denominator and tear out all the brilliant coating from the inscription, but my attempts were unsuccessful. The rest of the logo remained in place, prominently highlighting the battered first letter.

I don't see anything wrong with dedicated system keys. Let many argue with me and say that the return key should be on the right, I will not agree with them and will continue to repeat the opposite.

The touch button "back", by the way, is the only one that does not involve launching another function with a long hold. In contrast, the home screen key can bring up a Google search, and the right button turned out to be not a list of applications at all. With a short click, the square opens the menu in those applications where it exists, and only a long hold shows the last running programs. Much to our disappointment, it is not possible to set up this key and remake, for example, the purpose of this button. The buttons, by the way, are drawn and perfectly visible in the light, but are absolutely invisible in the dark, due to the lack of backlighting under them.

And the last detail, discussed even when we met, is a double tap to unlock. It is still there, and with it support for gestures on a locked display. There are not many letters, but all are very clear and it is impossible to get confused in them. C - for example, great for the camera. Just blocking the display by tapping on an empty space will no longer work. This feature of many modern devices is not implemented by Huawei in this model.

From the lock screen, you can pull out not only the top curtain, but also a small row of icons from the bottom. Four shortcuts launch a voice recorder, a calculator, a flashlight and a camera.

    Day 4. Negotiations

Five inches in our time is the golden mean, because it is on this diagonal that both "Internet-addicted" users and those constantly sitting on the "telephone wire" focus their attention.

The day of negotiations has come. I decided to call everyone with whom I had not communicated for a long time, and just find out some news from friends personally, without waiting for another correspondence on social networks. For the quality of communication during a conversation, Honor 4C should be praised. The voice speaker is very clear and there is a margin for volume. You can safely enter into a long debate even with "whisperers", that is, with those acquaintances who, for some reason, constantly speak into the phone very quietly. You won't have to ask again. Even when approaching noisy roads, I could not complain about the sound in the speech dynamics. I haven't tried just going to the railway station to talk next to the approaching train, but I think this is already redundant.

It is also superfluous because the interlocutors were not always satisfied with the fact that I was talking to them from the street. Even a barely perceptible wind can be heard by a person on the other end of the wire, and this despite the fact that the device has a microphone for noise reduction.

Huawei is trying its best to solve this borderline situation with sound quality during a conversation in its favor with software. The dialer application pleases with its simple implementation, the contacts are also concise, and there are no complaints about SMS. It is interesting that if there are three icons on the desktop: phone, contacts and messages - this is all one application, just its different tabs.

The menu when you call, on the contrary, is replete with a scattering of proposed actions. The only thing missing is the recording of calls without leaving the place of negotiations, and the speakerphone and other functions are well known and expected.

The management of the operation parameters of both SIM cards is located in the smartphone settings. We will not find actions different from stock Android here, the menu is simply redrawn to please the entire interface.

The phone, unfortunately, does not support LTE at all. Despite the fact that this is not a smartphone-building dinosaur, but quite a relevant solution, officially sold by Huawei for 10 thousand rubles. Not everyone, of course, will use this 4G, but without it it’s really scarce.

At first I did not find anything special in it, well, the shell itself and the shell. Having inherited some tricks from related Chinese firmware like MiUI and Flyme, EMUI still became very recognizable, and Huawei cannot be blamed for direct copying of competitors. But there are just a few fresh ideas here, if at all.

I do not want to burden my review with a full review of the shell, I will only note my subjective advantages and disadvantages of this user interface.

I'll start unconventionally with the minuses, and the first of them is the control keys. It is quite difficult to retrain yourself to launch a list of recently launched applications by holding the "square" button for a long time. Moreover, I did not find regular ways to redo its appointment by a short press in a smartphone. It would be great to set the launch of the menu for a long hold, which, to be honest, I don’t need at all.

The second unpleasant moment concerns the curtain, which, to my great disappointment, does not start from anywhere on the screen. Instead, after swiping from top to bottom, a search box for applications on the smartphone appears in the middle of the screen. The shutter is not general, but divided into two tabs, and the notification panel is lowered by default. You can get to the icons with a swipe to the right, as well as return to notifications by sliding back. Hence, often, when trying to add brightness by dragging the slider in the curtain, I do not achieve the desired result. The smartphone understands this as a swipe from left to right and takes me to the notification menu.

The default font of the system is too small, I think that not every person, even with eagle vision, will like such small signatures. In the settings, the font, of course, can be changed to a large one, in general, which I did, but, unfortunately, individual interface elements did not increase in size, for example, pop-up notifications.

Of the positive aspects of the shell, I would especially like to note the work on autonomy, which offers an abundance of power saving modes and permissive rules for each of the applications to be in the background, receive notifications, etc.

The abundance of themes and the presence of their own catalog allows you to colorize the boring look of Android; however, interchangeable themes are far from exclusive to this shell.

Huawei's traditional simplified smartphone management mode has not disappeared anywhere, which involves launching a kind of launcher that is understandable even to older people.

But, probably, the main advantage of EMUI is still its weight in working condition. Yes, the firmware eats up the lion's share of the permanent memory, but it is very economical to the operational, which is good for the phone.

Otherwise, the Huawei shell is just another variation on the theme of the external appearance of the system without any special advantages over other user interfaces. Compared to MiUI or even heavy ZenUI, in my opinion, EMUI loses in functionality, appearance and the number of customizable areas.

    Day 8. Walk

The first, of the competitors that come to mind, is a smartphone from the reborn company Fly - Wileyfox Swift, which recently appeared on the Russian market for 9 tr. There is little in common between these devices, take at least the fact that the "fox" was originally conceived as a very cheap device for a set of characteristics on its board and only rose in price over time, and Honor, on the contrary, goes down in price. The indisputable advantages of Swift are an extra 8 GB on the drive, a fresh green robot, and even with Cyanogen, which for me is just a fat plus, good display brightness and a more comfortable case, 4G support, finally. Of the minuses - slow memory. By cameras and the battery - parity. If I bought a smartphone today, then, of course, I would choose the updated Fly, if only because there is more memory there.

I am only familiar with the rest of the competitors in absentia and there were no opportunities to see any pitfalls in their line, but in any case, rivals with a 2/16 memory set will have an advantage, regardless of whose blood they are. So the purchase of last year's state employee from Meizu looks much more advantageous. Model M2 Mini is distinguished by an abundance of colors of the back cover and also a very interesting software shell. And lovers of autonomy can pay extra in the region of a thousand rubles and purchase a Highscreen Power Ice model, which largely repeats the appearance and concept of Xiaomi Redmi 3. I’m generally silent about the latter, because buying it (or Redmi 3S, it doesn’t matter) looks even more attractive. The only problem is with the warranty. If you're lucky, you can try to find a seller in the territory of the Russian Federation that provides its on-net guarantee, and if this calms you down, then you can quite trust an uncertified phone.

You can easily add the Asus ZenFone Go ZC500TG smartphone to the list of rivals. The Taiwanese computer giant has recently released so many different and similar state employees that there is simply no strength to sort them out. At first, I liked Zenfone, and I am also a regular user of the second generation of Asus smartphones. As practice shows, Taiwanese just relax on inexpensive phones, so I won’t risk recommending Zenfone instead of Honor.

If you wish, you can also find inexpensive models from ZTE, Alcatel, Lenovo and other strong market players on sale, so buying a model for the summer of 2016 is not very promising.

    Three weeks later

At first, the lack of memory dominated me, rather, morally. Timely clearing the cache and manually moving programs to an external drive saved me, but after almost a month of use, the memory ran out. The notification that the phone's memory is full no longer disappeared from the notification panel, I lost the ability to update the installed software, and it became pointless to download a new one. Although I didn’t put a tenth of the programs that I had in my main smartphone here, only the most necessary ones.

The second unpleasant moment was the back cover, which not only catches handprints, but also collects scratches too easily. I managed to put two pieces without much hassle.

Thus, after almost a month, I finally realized that this phone is not for me and I am not going to buy its upgraded version either. I don’t know why, but I don’t have a soul for the Honor trademark, at least in the fourth revision. Honor 5C is much more interesting, there is a larger screen, but not bloated to a phablet, and the case is made of noble materials and the battery initially has more impressive parameters than in the current one.

The only thing that confuses me is the rise in price of the line from model to model. If Honor 3C for its price of 9 thousand rubles was quite interesting, then 4C Pro for their starting price is almost not attracted. The novelty at number five promises to be very suitable and modern, but only the starting price of 14 thousand is no longer budgetary. It is sad to see how good quality for modest money gradually flows into the middle class.

    A month later. final conclusion

Huawei, when launching the next Honor model in Russia, is trying to draw special attention to it, offering future users to buy at a slightly better price than retail, and giving small but very useful little things in addition. Phones are imported in small batches, thereby creating an artificial shortage. And everything would be fine, but I never saw in the model of the previous year, well imagining in my head the state employee of the dream of spring 2015, nothing stunning so that you could run for this copy to the store or wait for the next batch in the online sale. The company only uses its impeccable reputation, good price and decent performance, burying the shortcomings of its models.

Summing up my own experience of operating Honor "and 4C, with all my generally positive attitude towards this model, I cannot call it optimal and well-balanced. When the lack of permanent memory constantly makes itself felt, when the screen is hopelessly dim in the sun, and this does not give a proper increase in autonomy, when the back surface is extremely impractical (constantly collects prints and scratches, and dirt gets into the logo), when the smartphone heats up for nothing, when for 10 thousand rubles you do not get support for 4G networks, against the background of such shortcomings fade the rest, quite strong points, such as a lot of RAM or a good camera, fast work and good performance... There is no need to talk about any balance between them, the advantages do not overshadow the list of the above disappointments, alas.

In the summer of 2016, I would venture not to recommend Honor 4C for purchase, even in the face of a slightly lower price for it. A wide variety of models more balanced than this one have appeared on the market. Even last year's competitors are doing quite well, such as Meizu M2 Mini, for example. Would I sing differently if I became the owner of this gadget last year?! I think not, but I would constantly look at its replacement.

Rating device 6/10, nothing outstanding. A typical middle peasant with its pitfalls.

    Denis Pervukhin

Device dimensions - 143.3 × 71.9 × 9.1 mm. The smartphone is tall and narrow, according to many users it is comfortable to hold in hand. In terms of size, it can be compared with the Lenovo P70 (142 × 71.8 × 9 mm). The weight of Huawei Honor 4C is 167 grams, the same weight as its “thickened” version with a capacious battery – Huawei Honor 4C Pro.

From the front, Huawei Honor 4C looks like a regular smartphone: it is somewhat reminiscent of the iPhone 5 or other Huawei phones. Noteworthy are only buttons stylized as virtual keys in Android 5.0, a metallic chrome frame around the display and black side frames. Because of this coloring, it seems that the screen is very wide and there are simply no frames around it. But as soon as you turn on your smartphone, the magical effect of such a “trick” dissipates – there are frames, they are just black. The rear panel of the smartphone has a special texture and is decorated with an embossed Honor logo. In addition to the logo on the back, you can see the speaker of the device, a camera lens with a flash and a microphone hole. Why did you suddenly need a microphone on the lid? Perhaps for shooting video, but it looks, in our opinion, unaesthetic.

The case is assembled with high quality. According to the manufacturer, it is made of "three-layer composite material." The case of the smartphone is collapsible. It does not have the usual ledge to remove the cover. However, it can be easily put on anywhere, removed and put in place. In tests, such lightness also had negative consequences: the lid spontaneously snapped off from the body while being carried in a jeans pocket.

    Screen - 4.0

The Honor 4C smartphone has a high-quality 5-inch display. It seems to have all the ingredients for a great screen for its price: HD resolution (1280×720 pixels), IPS-matrix, oleophobic coating and manual color balance adjustment. The pixel density is 294 per inch, which gives a clear picture, if you do not find fault and do not bring the screen to your eyes. Viewing angles are average for an IPS display. At the same time, at an angle, the image slightly yellows. Brightness varies from 14 cd/m 2 to 397 cd/m 2 , for comparison, Honor 5X can produce about 500 cd/m 2 . For darkness, this is excessive brightness, but in the sun the display remains readable. The oleophobic coating is weak - fingerprints remain on the display. The smartphone has a brightness sensor, and with it the auto-brightness function. There is no glove mode, but the screen feels touched in thin fabric gloves. In general, the display is rather of average quality, but for 9000 rubles it is an excellent screen.

    Camera

If you want an inexpensive smartphone with a really good camera, then the Huawei Honor 4C is for you. It has a 13 MP camera with autofocus, flash and image quality that matches the declared resolution. The level of detail is high, noise only appears when shooting in the dark. The camera works well with light, and in case of darkening or overexposure, it automatically turns on the HDR mode (increasing the detail of shadowed and overexposed areas of the frame). The maximum photo resolution is 4208 × 3120 pixels, panorama shooting, focus adjustment in different areas of the frame and face “decoration” mode are available. The main camera shoots Full HD-video (1920 × 1080 pixels) at 30 frames per second, stereo sound and tracking autofocus.

The 5 MP front camera is perfect for those who like to take selfies. The maximum photo resolution from the front camera is 2592 × 1952 pixels, and it also shoots HD video for video calls.

    Working with text - 5.0

Along with the standard Android keyboard, the Huawei Honor 4C comes preinstalled with the Swype functional keyboard. Thanks to it and the large diagonal of the display on the phone, it is convenient to type texts. It supports continuous word input. The keys have markings for additional characters. Switching between languages is inconvenient - you have to hold down the space bar, wait a bit and select the desired language in the pop-up list. For the keyboard, you can choose a different design and adjust its height for comfortable use. If you're more used to using Google's default keyboard, you can select it in the language and input settings.

    Internet - 3.0

Several browsers are preinstalled on the Huawei Honor 4C phone: the standard Browser, Opera and Google Chrome. Each with its own settings and capabilities. All three browsers have "one-time" (to the selected size) and automatic text fitting, traffic reduction, tab synchronization, incognito mode and much more. We tested the smartphone with browsers: it adequately copes with Internet surfing with several open tabs.

    Communications - 1.0

Smartphone Huawei Honor 4C supports a standard set of interfaces: Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n), A-GPS with GLONASS, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP profile. The smartphone does not support LTE. You can note the work with two Micro-SIM cards at once and a Micro-USB 2.0 connector, it supports USB-host for connecting peripherals.

    Multimedia - 4.2

During the tests, we highly appreciated the multimedia capabilities of Huawei Honor 4C. It supports a large number of audio and video formats. Of the audio, he did not play only AC-3 and DTS files. Of the video formats, the phone played MP4, MPG, TS, MOV, MKV, AVI, etc., only 2K and 4K videos did not start. A nice little thing - when taking pictures, the smartphone does not turn off the music in the player, as is often the case. Built-in players at the same time turned out to be poor in settings and special features.

    Battery - 2.6

According to the results of our tests, we can say that the operating time of the Huawei Honor 4C is quite low. It lasted 6 hours in the video test at maximum display brightness, which is good for its price tag. But in player mode, it ran out of juice rather quickly: it lasted only 41 hours (almost like Huawei P9 Lite) and turned off. In the average mode of use (1 movie per day, an hour of play, several calls, browsing, music, etc.), we barely had enough smartphone for a day. In games, the battery practically melts before our eyes - 10 minutes of playing NOVA 3 eats up 7-8% of the charge.

There are several power consumption modes - "normal" (games, online video), "smart" (everyday use) and "energy saving". In the latter mode, the image becomes black and white, the brightness is noticeably reduced, and only calls, SMS messages and the contact list remain available.

    Performance - 2.1

The Huawei Honor 4C's performance is good for its price tag. The smartphone is equipped with a proprietary 64-bit HiSilicon Kirin 620 mid-range processor. It has an impressive number of cores - 8 at once, but they operate at a low frequency - 1.2 GHz. At the same time, Honor 4C is equipped with 2 GB of RAM, not every state employee can boast of such characteristics. In daily use, the smartphone does not slow down, applications run quickly, there is enough RAM for browsing with several open tabs. The phone easily runs demanding games such as NOVA 3, Modern Combat 5. In tests, they loaded quickly, but did not always run smoothly. Dead Trigger 2 only managed to launch once. At the next attempts, the game simply crashed at the loading stage. Asphalt 8 had to lower the graphics settings. At the same time, we note that during the first launch, we observed artifacts in it - layering of different frames on top of each other. With subsequent launches, we were unable to repeat this "bug".

In benchmarks, the smartphone received points typical for mid-range stuffing - about 27000 in AnTuTu and 5100 in Ice Storm Unlimited from 3DMark.

    Memory - 3.5

For data storage, Huawei Honor 4C has 8 GB of memory, of which only 3.3 GB is available to the user. The capacity can be expanded using a microSD memory card (up to 32 GB). Supports hot-swappable memory card, moreover, you can install games and applications on it.

    Peculiarities

The main feature of the device is its low price - usually phones with such characteristics are one and a half times more expensive. Smartphone Huawei Honor 4C runs on Android 4.4 and with its own shell EMUI 3.0. There is no information about updating to Android 5.0 Lollipop. The device supports 2 SIM cards. It has a removable cover, but a non-removable battery. From the pre-installed software, we note the file manager and phone manager, which monitors applications and allows you to clean your smartphone from unnecessary files. Huawei Honor 4C has "chips" with controls: turning on the screen by double-clicking, turning off the incoming call signal by turning the smartphone over. In addition, you can launch the desired application by drawing the corresponding letter on the display that is off. This is already interesting: the screen recognizes four patterns - you can draw the letters C, E, M and W and one of the applications will launch on your smartphone. Which one - you can choose in the settings. By default, these are the camera, browser, music and weather, respectively.

Let's start with the cost - the recommended retail price of Honor 4C is 8,990 rubles. For comparison: at the other end of the lineup is the flagship Mate 7, which can be bought for about 40,000 rubles. And Huawei has not yet too expensive flagships - for the Galaxy S 6 Edge they ask from 62,000 rubles. However, the cost of Honor 4C is quite competitive against the background of devices that are much closer in class. With the help of "Yandex.Market" we have selected several of the most successful models for a similar price - and we will try to compare Honor 4С with them. So, what can a potential buyer expect for such money?

Honor 4C is equipped with a 5-inch screen. By modern standards, smartphones with such a diagonal are the golden mean: everything that is smaller is small phones, everything that is larger is large. Obviously, according to the idea of Huawei, this device should fall into the most massive segment.

The body of the smartphone is made entirely of plastic - there are no other options in this price category, metal and glass are much more expensive. At the same time, Honor 4C almost does not bend and does not creak at all, and in general it is assembled quite well. The materials do not leave a feeling of being expensive, but the Chinese have tried to make them at least original – the back cover of the Honor 4C is textured, as if covered with fabric. The presentation says something about “a silky surface with fibers 0.03 mm wide”, but it is important for us that the “silky” phone does not slip out of hands and does not get dirty too quickly. The appearance of the phone as a whole is standard, discreet - it will not attract attention, but inside this device is fraught with many surprises.

Surprise one: the budget phone uses a decent screen - an IPS-matrix with a resolution of 1280 × 720 (293 PPI). Of course, this display cannot be called ideal - it is even noticeable to the eye that it lacks colors, and the brightness is not very high. However, this is much better than what is offered "on average for the hospital" for the same amount. It has a good anti-reflective layer, as well as an oleophobic coating, albeit far from the best - swiping your finger across the screen of more expensive phones is noticeably more pleasant. The phones that we have chosen for comparison, the display is either about the same or slightly worse. The only exception is last year's Lenovo Vibe X, which has fallen in price by almost one and a half times over the year of its existence on the market, despite the growth of the dollar, and now falls into the budget segment.

Surprise two: a system-on-a-chip in a budget phone was also delivered quite productive. Honor 4C uses the development of a subsidiary of Huawei - HiSilicon Kirin 620. It has as many as eight energy-efficient 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 cores operating at a frequency of 1.2 GHz, and the ARM Mali-450 MP4 adapter plays the role of a graphics controller . The SoC also has a built-in HIFI II digital signal processor, which Huawei is especially proud of: there are voice enhancement technologies, dual microphone noise reduction, DTS support, and ultra-low power consumption in music playback - in general, a complete set. standard features that every modern smartphone should have. The Kirin 620 is being produced using the 28nm LP process technology - a more modern, 14nm process technology HiSilicon and TSMC are just beginning to master.

In Honor 4C, the Kirin 620 is made up of 2 GB of RAM – which is also a lot for a “state employee” – and an 8 GB flash drive. Competitors may offer more flash memory in some cases, but none can boast a more powerful system-on-a-chip. Here we will also mention a more or less complete set of all kinds of sensors: the smartphone has a gyroscope and an accelerometer, a magnetometer, a light sensor and a proximity sensor. Unless there is no barometer, but - again, taking into account the price - it's a sin to complain.

In the materials provided by Huawei, there was even a third surprise, but, unfortunately, it turned out to be a mistake made by someone at the stage of compiling the slide: the built-in LTE Cat.4 modem was shown on the Kirin 620 block diagram. In theory, he could well be there - there are modifications of the Kirin 620 with LTE. However, in practice, Honor 4C has a conventional 3G modem with a peak data transfer rate of 42 Mbps. Unfortunately, in Russia, 3G networks are quite overloaded, so even 10 Mbps input can only be observed on holidays - LTE in a smartphone will not be enough. For those who do not like life without LTE, Honor 4X is offered - the same thing, but a little more and with a Cat.4 LTE modem. Surcharge for increased size and improved data transfer speed - 2,000 rubles. There are not so many smartphones with LTE for the specified amount, and in most cases, you have to pay for the presence of an LTE modem with other characteristics of the device. A pleasant exception to this rule is Xiaomi Redmi 2.

I am glad that in Honor 4C they did not implement the ambiguous Huawei proprietary chip and combine one of the SIM card slots with a memory card slot - here, under a removable back cover, you can find all three slots: two for Micro-SIM cards and one for microSD .

If you remove the cover, you can also admire the sheet of foil, under which is hidden a non-removable 9.7 Wh (2550 mAh, 3.8 V) battery. Huawei is very fond of citing some separate measurable parameters in which the phone outperforms competitors, and even found such a parameter for the battery: according to the Chinese, it has a very high energy density - 587 W * h / l. True, we have nothing to compare with: we do not know the similar indicators of competitors' batteries. According to Huawei, the battery lasts for 28 hours of active use, that is, a little more than a day. Video on a single battery charge can be watched a little more than 10 hours, and talking - about 14 hours.

Another pleasant surprise was the set of cameras. The main camera of the Huawei Honor 4C uses a 13-megapixel Sony BSI CMOS sensor found in many mid-range and high-end phones. The lens with an equivalent focal length of 28 mm is characterized by an aperture of F / 2.0, and its protective glass is coated with anti-reflective and oleophobic layers. The camera shoots quite well - Huawei has already learned how to “tame” this matrix and squeeze out almost everything that it is capable of. For example, Honor 4C has the ability to shoot with a subsequent change in focus - the camera takes several shots with different focusing distances and allows you to select the one you need. Much less is known about the front camera: 5 megapixels - and that's it. It shoots mediocre, but in general it is better than similar cameras of other “state employees”. The camera sets of competitors from our table are worse, except that the exact same set is used in the Vibe X.

At the time of the presentation of the smartphone (and this material was published just in time for the presentation), Honor 4C is running Android 4.4 with Emotion UI 3.0 installed on top. Over time, Huawei promises to update the software to Android 5.0. In general, the interface is familiar to all those who have ever seen Huawei smartphones over the past year: everything is quite nice, somewhat non-standard compared to the regular Android UI, but simple and clear.

    ⇡ Conclusion

So, in terms of the sum of the characteristics, Huawei Honor 4C for its 8,990 at the moment looks very attractive. Before unequivocally recommending this device, I would like to test it fully - with the study of battery life, screen parameters and SoC power, but after a two-hour acquaintance, he left a mostly positive impression. The strengths of this smartphone are a productive system-on-a-chip by the standards of this segment and a very good set of cameras. The disadvantages include the lack of an LTE module and, perhaps, an inexpressive appearance - but this is for taste, for color ...
