• How to connect a router to a computer: step-by-step instructions. Additionally: MAC Address and copying it

According to my observations, few of those who were able to independently connect wifi router, if there is wired internet, knew how to do it RIGHT. That is, use it to set up a wireless network and combine different devices into it. As a result, they subsequently encounter difficulties that could have been solved at the local network design stage.

How to connect a wifi router?

Before we begin the step-by-step description of connecting a Wi-Fi router, I want to draw your attention to one point.

To create a full-fledged local wireless network, you need to buy a device such as a ROUTER, or also called a ROUTER.

The fact is that there are a lot of devices similar in appearance and functionality for various purposes. For example, out of ignorance it is easy to confuse it with a wired router without WiFi, which also distributes the Internet signal to devices. But only with the help of cables - it does not have an antenna.

Another device similar in appearance is an access point. In general, her tasks are slightly different from ours. A characteristic difference between a router and an access point is the presence of several outlets for network cables. While at the point there is usually only one.

The point of connecting a router is that it is now it, and not your PC, that will connect to the Internet via cable. To do this, all the necessary parameters required to connect to the provider, which were once applied on your desktop computer, will now be specified in the router settings. And all other devices will already receive Internet via wifi from it and according to the rules that will be specified in it.

For clarity, look at the diagram:

In order to connect a router at home and set up a Wi-Fi network, I used a dozen models from completely different manufacturers. I can say with confidence that in terms of the actual configuration of the WiFi router and connection to the provider, the difference between them lies only in the details of the graphic design of the admin panel. Therefore, having mastered the principle once on one model, you can apply them to others. Today, as an example, I will illustrate with screenshots from two routers - TrendNet TEW-632BRP and ASUS WL-520GC.

How to connect a router to the Internet via DHCP?

The first setting we will look at is setting up a DHCP server.
If previously there was only one computer and it alone received an IP address from the provider, then we can connect many computers and gadgets to the router. This means that it is the router, instead of the computer, that will “communicate” with the provider’s equipment. And within the framework of our home network between these devices, it will itself assign an internal IP address to each computer, laptop, phone, TV and everything else.

    Procedure:

    1. After connecting to the power supply, first of all you need to configure the router to communicate with the computer. To do this, insert the Internet cable into the WAN slot on the device. And we connect the other cable, with two plugs, which most likely came with the device, at one end to the computer’s network card. Where there used to be an internet cable. Others - in any of the LAN1, LAN2, LAN3 or LAN4 slots of the router.

I also want to note that it is better to connect the router to the network through an uninterruptible power supply. I had an unpleasant experience when a good Netgear device froze due to a power surge. It simply began broadcasting wifi not at 100, but at 2 meters. Of course, I had to buy a new one.

    2. Next, take the installation disk that came with the router. And we start installing drivers and software.
    3. After this, we need to configure the computer to work with the router. Now our network card is configured to connect directly to the Internet through the provider. This means that perhaps the control panel contains some data that is important for us to save and use later when working with the router. To do this, go to the settings of the TCP/IP v.4 protocol as shown in the diagram:

For Windows XP: “Start > Control Panel > Switch to Classic View > Network Connections.”

In Windows 7: “Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Manage network connections > Change adapter settings.”

In the screenshot, I go to the “Wireless Connection” settings, but you don’t have it yet, and since we connected the computer to the router with a cable, you need to select the “Local Area Connection” item:

If you have something indicated here, then write down this data on a piece of paper. This is especially true for those who have lost their contract for the provision of services and do not know the data for connecting to the World Wide Web. For a certain type of connection, which will be discussed below, this may be useful. After this, here, in the network connection settings on your computer, you need to set the IP, gateway and DNS to automatic. We will already enter these parameters in the wireless router itself.

    4. After that, go to the address “http://192.168.1.1”. Typically, configurations with the router occur here, if they did not have to be done at the software installation stage. But look in the instructions for the device to see which way to go to the router’s control panel. Since the default preset IP on different models may differ. Another popular place for placing brief instructions is a sticker on the bottom of the device. Look there too. If there are no instructions in the instructions, or it is lost, then go to the Control Panel, as I already described above. Only after right-clicking on “Local Area Connection” in the window that appears, click the “Details” button. In the window that opens, look for IPv4 Default Gateway - this is the IP address of the router.

    5. Now, finally, go to the address indicated there through the browser (http://IP ADDRESS OF YOUR ROUTER). And we find the DHCP Server item in the menu (in Trendnet it is combined with WAN) and set the range of values for possible IP addresses of devices within your local network. For me it was like this: Start IP - 192.168.10.101, End IP 192.168.10.200. And of course, opposite the DHCP Server item there should be an Enabled parameter. Domain Name or Host Name is the name of the future home wifi network. Let me make a reservation right away that the screenshots below were taken from my devices that are already working or have been working for several years. Their interface is in English, so it would be difficult for a domestic beginner to figure out what’s what without help - I hope these pictures will help you. Most modern firmware and software are already in Russified form, so it will be even easier to understand.

This is what it looked like on Trendnet (highlighted in red):

And here it is in ASUS:

Setting up a computer connection to the router via LAN

Now we will set the parameters for our wifi network at home - IP and router mask. For Trendnet this is the same item (see Figure 1, highlighted in green), for Asus - the WAN & LAN section - at the very bottom of the settings page. In the first case I set IP 192.168.10.1, in the second - 192.168.1.1. This is the address within the local network at which we can access the admin panel through a browser. And through which computers will access the Internet. Mask - default, 255.255.255.0

Connecting a WiFi router to the Internet via the WAN port

These were all the flowers, now the most interesting part is setting up the external connection of the router to the Internet.
There are several types depending on the provider settings. This happens in the WAN menu.

There are several other options for connecting to the provider’s equipment, but I didn’t come across them. Therefore, I will not talk about them for now.

How to encrypt your WiFi connection

If you did everything correctly and saved all the settings, then all devices that support wifi should now see the new network with the name you specified. However, the question of how to connect wifi at home is not yet closed. The home wifi network turned out to be open, that is, anyone can use your Internet access for free. In order to ruin everyone and make the wifi network at home accessible only to its owner, you need to protect the wireless network.

There are several methods, I have used two in my practice: WPE (or Shared Key) and WPA. The latter is more reliable, so I'll consider it. Go to security settings. In Trendnet this is the “Security” menu item, in Asus it is “Wireless > Interface”.

Select WPE or WPA Personal (PSK, TKIP) from the menu and set a password for authorization - from 7 to 64 characters. And we save. I show you how it was for me:

Well, now to access the Internet through your router, you need to enter a password. The final touch remains - so that there are no problems with connecting various devices to the router and with the operation of programs, we will manually set the DNS server. Setting this parameter is located in the same place where you entered the parameters for connecting to the Internet. We activate the function of manually assigning DNS servers and enter the IP from Google there:

    • DNS-Primary (or DNS Server 1):8.8.8.8
    • DNS-Secondary (or DNS Server 2): 8.8.4.4

You can also specify one of the Yandex servers (for example 77.88.8.8).

As you can see, connecting wifi through a router and making a wifi network at home is quite easy. I hope everything works out for you too!

Now for dessert, a traditional video on connecting a router, which will tell you even more clearly about the typical settings for working with the network.

The question of how to connect a wi-fi router to a computer is asked by users when they want to use the Internet throughout the apartment and have free access to the wi-fi network from several devices.

In addition, they are interested in how many computers can be connected.

Installing and connecting a router is a simple process, which, however, requires careful adherence to the algorithm of actions.

    Router installation

Installing a router can be done in two ways:

    • via wireless network;
    • using a twisted pair (a special wire that usually comes with the device).

The second method is less preferable. In order to make a connection, three main components are required:

    1. Actually a wi-fi router;
    2. A desktop computer or laptop with an installed network card;
    3. Network cable.

If you only need a Wi-Fi router to use the Internet from a phone or tablet at home, then inexpensive router models designed for 4–6 devices are quite suitable for you.

However, still pay attention to how many computers can be connected to the network at the same time.

Advice! Special requirements for the device should be made if you plan to store data. Also, when choosing, it is worth checking what speeds the device supports; they must be gigabyte. Otherwise, working on the Internet will become very difficult.

    Wired connection

Connecting a router using twisted pair is quite simple, but with such a connection its operation becomes much more complicated.

In particular, you will not be able to move the computer away from it more than a certain distance.

Therefore, this option is not applicable for laptops. But it may be a good solution if you have a desktop computer.

This wi-fi connection has its advantages. For example, it is believed that in this way the Internet causes fewer interruptions during operation.

    • First, connect an Internet cable to the router.
Find the WAN port on the back of the device and plug the cable into it. Then take the network cable and connect it to the router into the Ethernet port, and the other end into the corresponding port on the computer.

    • Set up your router.
Open any browser and enter the device's IP address in the address bar. The address must be in the format . The true IP of the router can be found on the sticker on its bottom or in the technical documentation for the equipment.

After the IP is registered, the setup program will require you to enter your login and password.

Then you can change the password for convenience. After this, the main wired network settings menu opens.

Important! If you are using a wired connection, then pay attention to the number of connectors in the router. How many there are - how many computers you can connect to the device.

    Wireless connection

If you intend to connect your Wi-Fi router wirelessly, you will have to set up the connection in two stages.

The first of them is the actual settings, and the second is work on network security.

    • In the router menu, open the “Wi-Fi” tab, and there find a tab called “Manual settings settings”. The names of the tabs may vary depending on the type of router, but their meaning is usually obvious.

    • In the main settings we find the SSID field. We write the network name in it. This is the name that you will see when connecting to the Internet from any device. Set the correct region in which the wi-fi network will work.
Next, you need to select a channel for data transmission. It is better to leave the one indicated initially. However, over time it can be changed if problems arise with access to the Internet.

    • Choose wi-fi standards. It is advisable to leave the mixed ones installed by default. Now choose how many network users can connect several computers to it at the same time.
If the number of users should not be limited, select “0”.

    • Go to the “Security” or “Security Settings” tab. In the field at the top, select the type of protection. WPA2-PSK will do. Enter the password in the “Key” field. Such measures will protect you from hacking and from those who like to use the Internet at someone else’s expense.
Only someone who knows the password can connect the device to the network.

The advantage of this method is that you can use the Internet throughout the apartment.

And, in addition, only with this type can you connect a second, third, or more computers located far from the device to the network.

In a modern environment, more and more devices are appearing in every apartment that can be connected to the Internet. For full operation, an Internet connection is required for smartphones, phones, and tablet computers. As the simplest and most universal solution for connecting these devices to the Internet and to each other, we can recommend installing a router. Therefore, you need to know how to connect a wifi router.

Through a router, you can connect devices such as a printer, laptop, computer, tablet, TV, etc. to the Internet or local network. An example of how to connect the Internet through a router to different devices is shown schematically in the figure.

A router is a network device that is used to establish a connection with an Internet provider. Through it, after the necessary internal configuration, access to the Internet is provided for your network devices connected to the router, for example a computer, laptop, etc.

Today, the cost of routers is constantly decreasing, thanks to a large number of different models. When choosing a router, you need to know what type of connection is used by your Internet provider (cable, telephone). In addition, routers may have some additional functions, such as a USB connector, etc., which may be necessary to connect your equipment. From this article you will learn how to connect a router to a laptop and computer.

Any modern router has the ability to connect devices both via a network cable (at least four) and via a wireless WI-FI channel. In addition, before connecting to the router, it is important to take all measures to protect your network from possible third-party access.

When choosing a place to install a router, you need to proceed from the fact that the coverage area should cover all the places where you need access to the Internet. If the signal is very weak, then the computer or laptop does not see the router. At the same time, it is recommended to position the router so that the router’s network does not extend much beyond the boundaries of the apartment in order to reduce third-party access to it. And if you do not plan to use wireless access, then it is better to simply turn off Wi-Fi when setting up.

After purchasing a router, the first thing you need to do is correctly connect the Wi-Fi router to your computer or laptop. This article will provide recommendations for connecting a router.

How to connect a Wi-Fi router

All modern routers are not much different from one another. In general, in the router you can select an interface through which the wifi router is connected, and it can be connected to an external network. And there are several more interfaces that are needed to connect the internal network.

Before connecting the Wi-Fi router, check out the approximate location of these connectors in the figure.

    Router interface

Depending on the connection used by the provider, there may be different options for the “incoming” wire, which you connect to the corresponding connector of the router and you need to know how and how to properly connect the router.

How to connect a router to the Internet

If you use a telephone socket (xDSL connection):

If using a network outlet (PPTP connection) or optical: channel

    Connector rg46

If you are using a modem, then the USB connector:

    USB connector

For internal channels, network sockets are used (usually there are four of them). There may be a USB connector that is used to connect a printer. Wireless communication is carried out via Wi-Fi.

Usually it is used when connecting one incoming channel, distributing the network via a network cable to those devices to which it is possible and connecting via Wi-Fi to the rest. When using a cable to connect a router, you need to ensure that all connections are made well, otherwise it may happen that the router does not see the cable.

Connecting to the Internet via a router

If you plan to connect a computer standing on the table to the router, then it is better to use a wired connection. This connection is better, as it is the fastest and most reliable and has a higher priority in routers.

And setting up a wired connection will be much easier.

When connecting a router to a laptop or TV, you will need the router itself, the connected device (computer, etc.), connecting

patch cord with which these devices will be connected to each other. A patch cord is a cable that is crimped in a certain way. This cable is based on a “twisted pair” cable, which consists of eight wires that are twisted together in pairs. Usually the cable is crimped after installation. Factory patch cords are also used, which look like in the picture.

    Factory patch cord

Twisted pair is also used if you need to connect the router to a TV, laptop or other devices. You can also use a wireless connection via Wi-Fi to connect to the router, but such a connection will have less bandwidth.

Connecting a wifi router to a computer is done as follows: one end of the patch cord is inserted into any of the LAN (local area network) connectors on the router, and the other end is connected to the computer’s network card.

The wire from your Internet provider must be inserted into the WAN (INTERNET) connector, as in the figure.

    Router interface

After connecting all the wires to the router, it will look something like the figure. Where the wire connected to the WAN connector is a wire from the provider, and the LAN1 connector has a wire connecting the router to the computer. The Power connector contains a cable from a power supply that is connected to the network.

As you can see, the number of ports on the router (in this case four)

determines the number of devices that can be connected via a wired connection to the router. But this limitation can be easily circumvented if you use an additional special device - a switch or hub. The hub also serves to stabilize the signal if you use a sufficiently long wired connection (about 100 meters).

The computer is connected with a patch cord to the router via the network card connector. This connector looks something like the one in the picture.

    Network card connector on computer

The laptop is connected with a patch cord to the router via the network card connector, as in the figure.

It is better to connect all other devices, such as a telephone, smartphone, etc., via a wireless Wi-Fi connection. After connecting the router, just wait a few seconds and the connection will be established. Sometimes a situation may arise that the laptop does not see the wifi router, then it is recommended to update the firmware of your router by downloading the latest version from the manufacturer’s website. Perhaps the patch cord was crimped poorly and needs to be re-crimped.

The presence of a signal on the router can be judged by the glow of the indicators on the front panel. If the WAN indicator is not lit and the router does not connect to the Internet, then there may be problems with the provider’s equipment. Next, you can enter the network address of your router (address 192.168.1.1) in your browser and configure the router by logging into the web interface.

Instructions for connecting the router to a computer and laptop via WI-FI (Windows 7)

If you are using a laptop, then first you need to activate the WI-FI button located on the laptop. Most laptops contain such a button, and you can turn the WI-FI module on and off. When this mode is activated, this will be indicated by the glow of the corresponding indicator on the laptop body. If there is no such button, then you may need to press a certain combination on the keyboard to turn on Wi-Fi mode. You can look at this combination in the instructions for your laptop; for example, on an Asus laptop you need to press Fn and F2. If your laptop can work in WiMAX 4G and Wi-Fi, then you need to select the Wi-Fi mode.

After this, you need to check whether the wireless connection is enabled in the settings of your operating system. To do this, you need to open the menu for viewing network connections, as in the picture below. Make sure your wireless connection is turned on.

After this, you need to determine which application in your operating system is used to connect to WiFi. Typically, a special utility is used to connect, which is installed along with the WiFi adapter drivers. You can find out about the use of such a utility by seeing the icon in the tray or by looking in the programs installed on the computer. You should pay attention to this, because such a utility can seize control of the WiFi adapter from the operating system. This problem may result in your laptop or computer not seeing the router. When you determine exactly which utility is responsible for connecting WiFi, you will need to connect to WiFi using this utility. Or you can disable the use of this utility in its settings and return control of the connection to the operating system.

If the WiFi connection is managed by the operating system, then we will configure the connection with an open SSID. Whether the SSID is public or private affects the security of the Wi-Fi network. If the SSID is hidden, it means that network ID distribution is deactivated, and your wireless network will be hidden from client devices. Such a shutdown can only hide the network from relatively inexperienced users.

To connect the network, you need to left-click on the icon responsible for the wireless network and located in the tray. From the list of available networks that you will see, you need to select your wireless network and double-click on it with the left mouse button.

After this, in the appropriate field you need to enter the security password for your network and click OK.

The operating system will connect the router to your computer or laptop via Wi-Fi. If the connection was successful, then you can go online by opening your browser. If the router does not see the Internet, then check the reliability of the cable connection from the provider to the router. When you further connect your computer or laptop to a wireless network, you will not need to enter a password to access the network, since the connection will occur automatically.

If you need to connect to a wireless network with a hidden SSID, you must select Manage Wireless Networks in the computer menu, as in the figure below.

In the window that opens, select the option – Add.

After this, you need to choose to create a network profile manually.

Now in the window that opens you need to enter all the parameters necessary to connect with a hidden SSID, as in the figure below.

You need to enter the name of the network in the field – Network name. You choose the type of network security that is installed on the router (WPA, WEP or WPA2). You need to enter the security key that you specified when setting up the router. After completing all the settings, you need to click Next and the next window will inform you about adding your network.

After this, the operating system will connect to your network if the signal level is sufficient. And you can open your browser and use the Internet.

How to connect a router to a computer

When connecting your computer to Wi-Fi, you need to connect the Wi-Fi module to your computer into the USB connector. It is more convenient for these purposes to use the connector located on the front panel of the computer. After this, check the connection of wireless devices with the system. To do this, open View network connections, as in the picture below.

In this window, the wireless connection must be turned on. After this, you need, as in the case with a laptop, to determine the program that is used to connect Wi-Fi and use it for the wireless connection.

Setting up a wireless connection when the DHCP server is not working

Let's consider the option of connecting a computer to a router with the DHCP server disabled. This method can also be used if the computer cannot obtain the router’s IP address and the computer does not see the wifi router. To set up such a connection, you need to manually enter into the TCP/IP settings the value of the IP parameters used in your wireless network. If the DHCP parameters in the router have not been changed, you only need to enter in the appropriate field any suitable IP address that is within the range of values set by the default router.

This setting should make it possible to work if you had a problem with the computer not seeing the router. Even if the status of obtaining a network address is illuminated and the network address will not be obtained automatically.

For further configuration, you need to open the network connections view, as in the figure below.

After this, you need to click on the wireless connection icon and select Properties from the menu.

After this, you need to configure the properties of Internet Protocol version 4. In this window, you must manually enter the IP address parameters for connecting to the WIFI network. In this window, you must manually enter the parameters that the router accepts. When using a router manufactured by Asus, Linksys or ZyXel, you can set the following parameters for the IP address,
default gateway and subnet mask as in the figure below.

After entering all the necessary settings, you need to click OK to apply the settings. With this setup, you should take into account that if you often work on a laptop with other Wi-Fi networks outside the home, then there may be some problems with automatically connecting to these networks. This will happen due to the fact that you have hardcoded the TCP/IP settings, and other ranges for network addresses will be used outside your home.

Now you know what a wi-fi router is and how to connect various devices to it.

If you are a regular reader of our site, then you probably remember our article in which we talked about. In continuation of this article, we want to tell you how to set up a Wi-Fi router in an apartment, placing emphasis when setting it up.

Using a Wi-Fi network at home

For beginners, a few words should be said about why Wi-Fi is needed at home and what its advantages are. Wi-Fi at home is necessary in order to use a router to divide the Internet into several devices. Wi-Fi is also needed to create a local network. It should also be noted that many devices, such as tablets and smartphones, do not support an Ethernet connection, so Wi-Fi is the only way to transfer the Internet to these devices.

By creating a Wi-Fi network at home, you can get rid of wires in your apartment, and also get access to the Internet in any room of the apartment or private house. As mentioned above, to create a Wi-Fi network you need a router, the correct configuration of which will be discussed further.

How to properly configure a Wi-Fi router

If you followed the site’s recommendations that were given in the article about a Wi-Fi router, then you should have chosen the right Wi-Fi router that will fully satisfy all your requirements and perform all the tasks assigned to it.

In the article about this, we gave recommendations on the best place to install a Wi-Fi router. When a location is selected, and this location is most likely located near a desktop computer, then this computer needs to be connected to the router using a twisted pair cable (network cable), which comes with all router models. If the location of the Wi-Fi router is not near the computer, then in any case, the initial setup of the router must be done via an Ethernet connection - a cable.

When the router is connected to a computer or laptop, you need to go to the router settings menu. The router settings menu is designed as a website, so you shouldn’t have any difficulties with it. In order to open the router settings, you need to enter the local address of the router in the address bar of the browser: “192.168.1.1”. Before logging in, enter your username and password to access the settings menu. The login and password are the same: “admin”. The router menu will look approximately as shown in the picture below.

Reflashing the router for high-quality work

To begin with, it’s worth saying a few words about the firmware. We would advise experienced users to reflash their Wi-Fi router, since in the vast majority of cases, the standard firmware of routers is not up-to-date, and therefore there may be some flaws in them. To fix this, we recommend flashing the router to improve the quality of the Wi-Fi network and the operation of the router.

You can download the firmware file from the official website of the router manufacturer. You can reflash the router by going to the “System Tools” section in the “Firmware Update” category. If your router has an English shell, then go to the “System Setup” section in the “Firmware upgrade” category. Specify the path to the firmware and update it. Now let's move on to setting up the Wi-Fi network.

Setting up an Internet connection and Wi-Fi network

First, you need to set up a WAN connection, that is, configure the router to connect to the provider so that Internet traffic flows to the router.

    • WAN connection type. To configure the router, open the “Network” section and the “WAN” category. In the WAN connection settings, you need to set the type of your Internet connection. As a rule, most modern providers use dynamic IP (Dynamic IP), for which you do not need to enter settings. If your provider uses a PPPoE connection, then you need to select the appropriate item in the menu and enter the settings for its connection, indicating your login and password. For a static IP address, you must also select the appropriate connection type and enter the following settings: IP address, subnet mask and default gateway.
    • Setting up DNS. If in its settings the provider requires the registration of the DNS server address, then enter the primary and secondary DNS (DNS1 and DNS2). For a dynamic connection type, you do not need to enter DNS, as it will be set automatically.
    • Now let's move on to setting up the Wi-Fi network. Go to the “Wireless” section, where you can set the following settings.

      • Network name. The network name refers to the name of your Wi-Fi router, which will be displayed in the list of devices for Wi-Fi connection. The router name must be unique, otherwise, if there are 2 Wi-Fi routers with the same names in the same coverage area, this may lead to problems with accessing the wireless network. Having come up with a unique name for the router, we move on to choosing a communication channel.

      • Wi-Fi channel. Here you need to select the channel through which the Wi-Fi signal will be transmitted. All routers can operate in 13 channels, but you only need to select one. It is important to note that if a large number of devices are working on the same Wi-Fi channel, then there may be interruptions in access to Wi-Fi, as well as a drop in speed. Most often, users set the router to automatically select a channel, but this can cause problems. We recommend checking the number of Wi-Fi routers that are available in your apartment; if there are few, leave automatic channel selection; if there are many, install manually. We recommend setting the channel from 10 to 13, since these channels are used the least often.

      • Transfer mode. Wi-Fi has its own data transfer modes. Today there are several Wi-Fi standards: a, b, g, n, ac. The most used standard is “n”, but we do not recommend installing only it, since devices that do not support working with this standard simply will not connect to the Wi-Fi network.
