If you own an Android smartphone, then you probably know that Google can recognize your current location. Accordingly, Google can monitor your movements in the area, compiling a history of visited places and a tracking map. Some will find this opportunity very convenient and interesting, while others will find it too intrusive and dangerous.

Today I will tell you how Google location history is compiled and how to disable this “dangerous” service. I will share my own experience. Not long ago, I completely accidentally discovered that Google Maps writes the history of my movements around the city. At that moment, the only thing that outraged me was that I didn’t know about it at all. On the other hand, I found it interesting that Google saved data about my trips from a week, a month and a year ago. At that time, I had no plans to disable Google location history. The famous Internet company constantly claims that the map of movements remains confidential and is accessible only to the account owner.

How do you know if Google Location History is enabled?

It all depends on the right one. To find out if location history is turned on, open the Google service called Timeline (Google Maps Timeline). In the lower left corner, under the map, you can find a section that says “Location history is disabled” and a blue button asking you to turn it on “Enable history.” If the history is already included, the inscriptions will be appropriate.

There is an alternative way to manage the Google service with the chronology of your locations. Open your Google account, find the “View Activity” subsection in the “Privacy” section, and in it the “Chronology in Google Maps” item. After clicking, you will be redirected to the Timeline service map with a similar choice of enabling/disabling the service.

It’s worth noting right away that turning off Google’s location history will not lead to deleting the history of your locations in the past. That is, all old data will be saved. In the upper left corner you will find a calendar with three sections “Per year”, “Per month” and “Per day”. Depending on your tasks, select the desired period or date. • Delete one day, month or year. To do this, use the trash can icon in the lower right corner of the card with the caption “Delete daily data.”

• Delete a specific address or location. To do this, select the desired location in the left panel with the list of addresses, open the context menu through the icon with three dots and select “Delete entry.”

Checking the tracking settings on your smartphone

Let's start with users of the iOS operating system. To turn off Google location history on your iPhone, you'll need to sign in to either the Google search app or another Google app, such as Google Maps.

In the Google Search app, tap on your profile image in the upper left corner and open the application settings. Next, go to the menu item:

Editing Timeline

Google Timeline does not display accurate data all the time. Sometimes it shows the wrong location or doesn't show a place you remember visiting. If you encounter similar inaccuracies, you can select individual locations in your timeline to change the claimed location or remove it from the day without deleting all others. The steps to change the timeline on desktop, Android, or iPhone remain the same, but depending on the device, the options may vary.

Disable location history

If you don't want Google to track you all the time, you can disable this History Location option.

To disable Google Location History on your desktop:

• Go to page Timeline and click on the button Pause History location.

To disable Google location history on Android:

• On your phone, select Settings> Location> Google Location History and switch Off to turn off location history.

To disable Google Location History for iOS:

1. Open the Google app on your device.
2. Select Settings> Privacy> location> History> Not a store.

When you turn off location history, Google Maps stops collecting the places you visit with your device to add them to your map's Location History.

Google warns that turning off location history will limit the functionality of some Google products, such as Google Maps and Google Now. How to edit or delete individual entries from your Google Maps timeline

I'm using Android in this article, but the steps for iOS are exactly the same. To access your timeline, launch Google Maps and swipe right or click on the three bars in the top left corner to open the menu. Select Timeline.

The default view is a mini-map at the top of the screen and a view of your recent locations at the bottom. To edit (or delete) any of these locations, simply click on the entry.

From here you can edit the entry by clicking the "Edit" button, which will allow you to change the time and specify the exact location if it is inaccurate.

To delete an entry, click on the trash can icon in the upper right corner. A pop-up window will appear asking you to confirm deleting the entry.

How to Stop (and Remove All) Location History Tracking in Google Maps

You don't have to delete each entry individually. You can delete all your data from the history.

While in Timeline, click the three dots in the top right corner, then select Settings.

It's actually quite difficult to disable timeline completely because it can negatively impact other aspects of navigation. But if you want to remove entries from your history, then go to the bottom of the history settings page and turn off the “Location history enabled” option.

You can turn off location history for a specific device or completely - just click the corresponding switch. The top switch will turn off location history tracking on all devices, and the switch next to the device name will simply turn it off on that specific device.

You can also delete your location history if you wish. There are two ways to do this: “Delete all location history” or “Delete part of location history.” These are the last two options on the History Settings page.

To delete your entire location history, click on this item. You'll see a warning that this action cannot be undone and may affect apps that use your location history. If you agree, check the “Yes, delete” box and click “Delete”.

If you want to delete location history only for a period, then select “Delete part of location history.” Specify the start date of the period and the end date and click “Continue”.

A warning will appear again, check the “Yes, delete” box and click “Delete”.

How to delete navigation history

Deleting navigation history is a little more difficult because there is no way to delete everything with one click - you can only delete individual entries.

First, launch Google Maps. Open the menu by swiping right or tapping the three bars in the top left corner. Scroll down the menu, there you will see the “Settings” item, click on it.

Here, find and click on the “History” item.

Here you will see all the routes you used during navigation. It is not possible to clear all the data at once, so you will have to delete them individually by pressing the X on the right side.

After clicking on X, you will receive a small warning that this entry will be deleted from your Maps history. Confirm the deletion by clicking on the “Delete” button.
