    Major league routers come very close to professional equipment in their range of capabilities, while maintaining an intuitive and flexible user interface in which most of the settings are performed automatically or using simple step-by-step instructions. Such routers are equipped with four or even six effective antennas for successful operation in two bands simultaneously, the number of LAN ports has been increased to eight or even ten, and there are also several USB ports, one of which is of the USB 3.0 standard.

    ASUS RT-N66U, ASUS RT-AC68U, ASUS AC3200 are the most prominent representatives of the premium segment. Yes, the price for them is steep, but every ruble invested in them is worked out with 100% efficiency. In addition, a router that is “at the cutting edge of progress” will not become outdated as quickly as its cheap brother and will last longer.

    A separate group includes ADSL routers, combined devices that carry an ADSL modem and the hardware of a simple wireless router on board. The price for devices of this class is unreasonably inflated by the manufacturer, so it will be cheaper to buy an inexpensive router and operate it with a cable modem, which the provider provides for free.

    A few months ago I had to advise friends on buying a router for a small apartment. The house is panel, even the partitions between rooms are reinforced concrete, so it is important that the WiFi module works efficiently. We had to choose from models between the lower and middle segments - the customers did not have much money. As a result, I found out that ASUS ships models in the lower and mid-price ranges with disgusting antennas. With a stated gain of 5 dB, it barely reached 2. As a result, the router installed in the bedroom could not reach the kitchen. We managed to get out of the situation by purchasing two antennas from the TP-LINK router on the secondary market and connecting them to ASUS.

    In such devices, the Internet provider is connected with a cable of the same standard as wired clients: UTP-8 twisted pair cable.     A 3G router can be either a specialized device or any universal router equipped with a USB port. The Internet channel is organized via a USB modem that connects to the router.

    To eliminate the possibility of errors, before setting up any Asus router, you need to connect it to a desktop computer or laptop using a patch cord. Do not perform the initial setup; you can do it via a wireless network; errors may occur.

    Older models of ASUS routers support wireless configuration using a smartphone running Android. To do this, you need to install the Asus Router program from the PlayStore application store. Before starting the program, make sure that the router's wireless module is not disabled by a button or switch on the rear panel.

    Remember! For a router that has been reset to factory settings, the DHCP server is always running. If a network card configured to automatically receive an address does not receive it or receives an address like 254.168.x.x, the router is faulty. Return it to the seller if possible.

    Before the first attempt to make changes to the settings, the router will ask for authorization parameters. By default it is admin/admin. If the router is not new, the password may have been changed. In this case, you need to reset the device to factory settings.

    If you do not want to waste your router’s resources on encrypting your wireless network or the topology of your cable connections allows unauthorized connections to the router, then the optimal security algorithm would be to bind clients by MAC address and a digital identifier for each network adapter. It should be noted that for clients bound by MAC address, network addresses will need to be entered manually.


    Static IP address

    Connecting to a provider with a static address is a rare option these days. After all, the range of “white” TCP/IP v4 addresses was exhausted last year, and not every provider has equipment for connecting to the TCP/IP v6 standard; in addition, this option significantly increases the cost of the tariff plan. But if your contract is several years old and you have a static address, setting up a connection using an ASUS router is not difficult at all.


    PPPoE connection

    Connecting via the PPPoE protocol is the most common, allowing you to connect to the network using a login and password. The network address is assigned dynamically, from the provider’s address space, thus eliminating the need for a “white” TCP/IP v4 address. Almost all ASUS routers, even the most inexpensive ones, support speeds of up to 100 Mbit/s on this type of connection, which is sufficient for most tariff plans.


    VPN connection (LTP or PPTP)

    VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a mechanism that allows your provider to create a virtual tunnel between your home network and theirs. This connection provides a significantly better level of security and allows you to use various provider services in your local network, such as a file hosting service, a media server, and digital TV. The disadvantages of this connection are the lower access speed, since the protocol is resource-intensive and requires a lot of computing power. To fully use a secure VPN connection running using the PPTP or LTP protocol, you will need a mid- or high-end router with a fast processor and a large amount of RAM.

    Correct configuration of a wireless network is very important, since in dense urban areas or in an apartment building, a non-optimally configured router can distribute WIFI at low speed, with errors, or even lose the signal. For a high-rise building, the optimal wireless module would be one that operates in two frequency ranges - 2.4 and 5 GHz. All models in the premium segment and some in the mid-segment are equipped with such modules.

    Having identified the least loaded channels in the range using a network scanner program, proceed to setting up Wi-Fi in the router.


    To further protect your wireless network from attacks or unauthorized connections, in addition to encryption, you can use the function of filtering clients by mac address. To do this, you need to go to the “Wireless Network MAC Address Filter” tab, activate the filter mode and create a list of devices that will be allowed access to the router.

    How to set up IPTV

    To configure IPTV, go to the “Local Network” section. There, go to the IPTV tab and set the values ​​in the sections as shown in the screenshot. Please note that in the “Selecting an IPTV STB port” section, the Lan port into which the TV set-top box is connected is indicated. Don't forget to enable multicast routing if your set-top box or TV needs to have access not only to video traffic, but also to local network resources and the Internet.

    To provide an IPTV device with simultaneous access to both IPTV traffic and the Internet, for the functioning of online services, browser and mail, use the DUAL PPPoE connection type, if it is supported by your provider. If this is not possible, you can try connecting a wi-fi adapter with a USB interface to the set-top box and try setting up TV and Internet services separately.

    A new version of your router software can improve stability and performance and add new features. Premium routers update the firmware automatically as soon as an Internet connection is established. All that is required from the user is to read the message about the downloaded new version of the “software” and agree with its installation.

    In entry-level routers and even in middle-segment models, you will have to update the software manually by first downloading the firmware file from the manufacturer’s website.

    On budget versions of ASUS routers, it is not possible to install a new version of ASUSWRT - the small amount of RAM and slow processors do not allow this. Therefore, the entire segment of entry-level routers is equipped with old-style software, which has not even changed cosmetically for more than five years. Nevertheless, all the basic settings of the router are implemented quite simply.

    Internet connection settings

    All budget routers allow you to configure a connection using the PPPoE, VPN (PPTP or LTP) protocols, as well as with a static or dynamic IP address. When connected via a VPN protocol, budget routers will not be able to provide speeds higher than 15–30 Mbit/s, so they are only suitable for users with low tariff plans.

    A connection with a static address is not common due to the fullness of the TCP/IP v4 address space. Setting it up itself does not present any difficulties.

    1. Set the WAN Connection Type to Static IP.
    2. In the WAN IP Setting section, enter the address allocated to you by your provider, subnet mask and gateway address.
    3. If you want to automatically obtain DNS addresses, activate this option in the WAN DNS Setting section or manually enter the server addresses there.
    4. Save your changes by clicking the Apply button in the lower right corner of the window.

    The most common and easy-to-set up connection provides acceptable Internet speed even on the oldest routers.

    1. Open the router's web interface.
    2. In the left column, expand the list of Advanced Settings and open the WAN section.
    3. Set the WAN Connection Type to PPPoE.
    4. Enable automatic acquisition of a network address by the WAN port.
    5. Enable automatic retrieval of DNS addresses.
    6. In the Account Setting section, enter the username and password provided by your provider.
    7. Set the values ​​of the MTU and MRU variables to 1400, this is the standard for most Internet providers.
    8. Save the changes with the “Apply” button.

    Setting up a VPN connection is no different from setting up any Internet connection using a password pair. The connection is configured in exactly the same way as in the ASUSWRT firmware, only the web interface design is slightly different.

    Several years ago, I worked as a service engineer for an Internet provider that provided access to clients using the VPN protocol. Younger models of ASUS routers coped well with this connection: they worked stably and without loss of speed. But as soon as the provider increased the speeds in the existing tariff plans, there was a wave of complaints from customers that the speed had not increased. The routers had to be replaced with more efficient models.

    The first time you turn on the router, the wireless network is ready to work. But since network encryption is disabled by default, anyone can connect to it. Therefore, the first thing you need to do after setting up an Internet connection in the router is to rename the wireless network, enable encryption and enter a password to access it.

    1. Open the router's web interface.
    2. In the left column, expand the list of advanced settings (Advanced Settings) and open the Wireless section.
    3. In the SSID field, enter the name of your wireless network, in the Authentication Method field - the encryption type (WPA2-personal is optimal).
    4. In the WPA Pre-Shared Key field, enter the password to access the wireless network. It must be at least eight characters and contain a combination of lowercase and uppercase letters with numbers.
    5. Save the changes and you can connect your wireless devices to the router.

    How to set up IPTV

    Entry-level routers do not support dual authorization, so an IPTV set-top box or digital TV can only be configured to receive television broadcasts, and access to Internet services will not be available. The only exceptions are devices that can connect a compatible wireless adapter to the USB port. In this case, the TV will receive IPTV traffic through the Ethernet port, and using a wireless adapter it will connect to the Wi-Fi network and work with Internet services.

    Connect one of the router’s LAN ports to the network card of your set-top box or TV, and then in the router’s web interface settings, select this port as a digital TV port.

    My repeated attempts to set up digital TV on entry-level ASUS routers ended in fiasco. Or the TV is working, but the Internet is barely breathing, or there is a download on the computer and a slide show instead of a video on the TV. The router's power is not enough even to play HD channels. To be fair, I note that most entry-level routers suffer from this. Only TP-LINK stands apart - even on the youngest WR-740N router, digital TV works flawlessly.

    1. From the ASUS website, download the latest software for your router. Unpack the software archive.
    2. In the left column, expand the list of advanced settings (Advanced Settings) and open the Administration section.
    3. Go to the Firmware Upgrade tab.

      Not all lower-end router models have a disaster recovery feature after a failure when updating the firmware. During the update process, do not disconnect the router from the network and do not perform any manipulations with the computer with which the update process was initiated. If the firmware is not completed successfully, only the service center can help you.

      The DHCP server is responsible for connecting network clients to the router and distributing IP addresses to them. Enabling this mechanism eliminates the need to manually enter addresses for each network adapter and ensure that they do not conflict.

      1. Open the router's web interface.
      2. In the left column, expand the list of advanced settings (Advanced Settings) and open the LAN section.
      3. Go to the DHCP Server tab.
      4. Specify the start and end of the address range that will be assigned to clients, as well as the time interval at which this data will be updated.
      5. Apply the changes you made and restart the router.
