• The touchpad does not turn pages. We fix what doesn't work on Windows: Bluetooth, touchpad scrolling, bottom panel, Skype. If the touchpad does not work or has stopped working

If Skype, Bluetooth, the bottom panel, or scrolling using the touchpad are not working on your computer, read this material - we will try to figure out the problems.

    Bluetooth doesn't work

If you wanted to connect wireless speakers, headphones or a mouse, and suddenly it turned out that Bluetooth is not turned on on your laptop, the best thing to do first is try to turn it on. To do this, you need to perform different actions in different operating systems.

The easiest way is to enable BT in Windows 7. To do this, you need to find the corresponding shortcut in the autorun panel (bottom right) and click on it, then open “Settings” and enable the module.

Please note that on the laptop you need to turn on not only Bluetooth itself, but also Networks (Wireless).

If your PC is running Windows 8, you'll have to do things differently. You need to open the right panel. To do this, move the cursor to one of the corners and click “Options”. Then select Change PC Settings>Wireless Network. After this, to connect the device, you need to go to “Devices” > “Add device” in the same section.

In Windows 10, to turn on Bluetooth, you need to go to “Settings” and then select the one you need, for example, “Wireless devices”, where you can turn on the BT module or turn off the “Airplane” mode, which this module blocks by default .

If you couldn't turn on Bluetooth, it means most likely that the driver installed on your system is not suitable or is not working correctly. To see if this is the case, you need to go to the “Device Manager” (Win + R > devmgmt.msc). If BT devices seem to be installed, but are named “Generic Bluetooth Adapter” and/or Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator, most likely the installed driver is not suitable. If the device is recognized, but does not work, and the icon in the “Device Manager” has a down arrow, then it is disabled. You need to right-click on the BT module line and select “Engage” in the dialog box that appears.

If there is a yellow exclamation mark in place of the arrow, then the device driver is not installed. You can read about how to fix this problem for any device in the first article in the series. In addition, it is possible that the module is disabled physically or from the BIOS.

We have already talked about how to enter the BIOS or UEFI. The BT item may be located on the Advanced or System Configuration tabs. Here you need to pay attention to the items Onboard Device Configuration, Wireless, Built-in Device Options or WLAN. All these items must be enabled, that is, Enabled

    Touchpad scrolling doesn't work

A touchpad, as you know, is a touch panel that replaces a mouse on laptops. Therefore, if it does not work, the user is truly left without hands.

When your touchpad refuses to work not entirely, but only partially, for example, scrolling does not work, with a 95% probability the device driver is to blame. Of course, it won’t hurt to wipe the touchpad one more time, but if this doesn’t fix the situation, you most likely need to update the driver.

To do this, you need to go to the “Device Manager” (Win + R > devmgmt.msc), then find the item responsible for the touchpad. Usually it is located in the “Mice and other pointing devices” section, but it may happen that the touchpad is not there. In this case, you need to look in the “Other devices” section, and if not there, you need to go to the “View” > “Show hidden devices” tab.

After the device you are looking for is found, you need to update or manually find and reinstall the driver. We talked in detail about how to do this in the first article.

    Taskbar doesn't work

Sometimes in Windows the so-called “bottom panel”, or Taskbar, may suddenly stop working. This happens especially often in Windows 10 as the youngest and not yet debugged system.

If this particular version of the OS is installed on your computer, and the Taskbar has stopped responding to external stimuli, most likely the problem is in Explorer, which is simply frozen. To make him fulfill his duties, you should do the following. First, you need to log into PowerShell. If not only the Taskbar, but also the Start button does not work, you should press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, then in the window that appears, select the “File” tab > “Run a new task”. After this, the task creation console will open, in the command line of which you need to write PowerShell and check the box next to the line “Create a task with administrator rights.” The next step in the PowerShell command line is to write: Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach (Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$ ($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”). This command will force File Explorer to reboot.

The popular messenger from Microsoft may not launch or work incorrectly for several reasons. Firstly, the program itself may be “mistaken”. In this case, you need to download a fresh distribution from the Skype website and reinstall it. Secondly, the messenger may not work for external reasons, for example, problems with sound, microphone, headphones or webcam. In this case, you should carry out diagnostics as we described in the first and second articles of this series, and restore the operation of the modules.

The touchpad is a century-old feature, long ago replacing the alternative mouse controls. With it we can completely control our device, be it a laptop or a hybrid tablet. Many laptops (Acer, Asus, HP, Lenovo, Dell) have problems with the touchpad. What to do if the touchpad on a laptop does not work in Windows 10? Let's look at 5 ways to solve this problem.

    1. Re-enable the touchpad using the Fn key

One story happened to me when I turned on WiFi on my laptop and accidentally disabled the touchpad. For a long time I searched for the reason, without immediately realizing what had happened. It turned out to be simple, laptops have an additional functions button called Fn at the bottom left of the keyboard. To enable any function on a laptop, press the combination of the Fn and F1...F12 buttons. On these same buttons F1-F12, pictures or symbols are drawn to apply the parameter. For example, to enable the touchpad, you need to press Fn+F7; on the F7 button itself there will be an image of something like a touchpad. You can press all the buttons in order Fn+F1...F12, but remember that there is a function to turn off the display; press again the buttons on which the screen went dark.

On some HP laptops, the touchpad is turned on and off by double-tapping the edge of the touchpad itself. Asus and acer brands may have a separate button next to the touchpad. If the touchpad still does not work, then move on.

    2. Removing Other Mouse Drivers

There are times when you have had a whole bunch of drivers connected from different mouse devices in the past and never removed them. Some drivers from mouse manufacturers automatically disable the Touchpad themselves. Go to device Manager by pressing a combination of buttons Win+R and enter in the line devmgmt.msc.

Find the line indicating mice and other pointing devices, click on the tab to expand the category and remove all mouse drivers in order until the touchpad starts working on your laptop. If it doesn't work, try rebooting the system after removing all drivers. Touchpad not working? Let's move on to the next point.

    3. Update or rollback the touchpad driver

Try updating or rolling back the touchpad driver. Go to the same device manager as described above. Find the device Touchpad, usually it is called the same as the brand of laptop (Dell TouchPad, Lenovo TouchPad, Synaptics, HP TouchPad, Acer TouchPad, Asus TouchPad.) Right-click on your driver and select properties. Next, click Update to see if there are any useful updates for your touchpad.

Many people have reported on the Microsoft forums that the Touchpad stopped working after updating Windows 10, for this you need to select rollback the driver. If your Rollback button is not highlighted, it means you do not have a previous version of the driver.

In many cases, the device manager does not work to enable TouchPath on a laptop. If your TouchPad still does not work on a laptop in Windows 10, then go to the mouse properties.

    • Dial mouse in the windows search bar and go to Mouse Settings.
    • Click Additional options mouse, in the window that opens go Device Settings, tab Touchpad or as in the picture.
    • Find your Touchpad and click "enable".

    5. Disable touch screen input service for hybrid laptops

If your laptop is a hybrid (laptop and tablet in one with a touch display), there is a chance that the touch screen input service, which controls the functionality of the stylus, is interfering with your touchpad.

To disable the service press win+R then enter services.msc and in the list of services find TabletInputService or Tablet PC Input Service. Right-click on it, then disable it. A very inconvenient solution for those who use a touch screen and touchpads, but you can then be smart and try to remove the drivers, roll back, update and then restart the service.

A touchpad is a laptop touch panel that allows you to control the cursor on the screen without using a mouse. Usually it has two buttons, like a mouse, and on the right side there is an area where you can scroll the page on the screen.

The touchpad can be turned on and off as needed. To do this, there is either a special button on the case or a key combination. You can usually scroll a page in the following ways:

    • Swipe one finger to the right side (there may even be a stripe drawn there).
    • Swipe vertically to scroll vertically, swipe horizontally to move across the width of the page.
    • Another option for two-finger scrolling is to hold one still and move the other up or down.

There could be several reasons why the touchpad is not scrolling the page:

    • driver problems;
    • turning off the device;
    • equipment malfunction.

To fix problems, first of all, configure the touchpad correctly.

    Setting up a laptop touchpad

If the touchpad does not scroll the page, the scrolling functionality may not be configured. First of all, make sure that it is turned on at all. Because when you reinstall or update any program or system, it may be turned off by the program itself. The same thing sometimes happens when connecting a mouse to a laptop.

    To configure, do the following:

The Overview tab offers quick instructions on how to use the Properties window.

The next item offers advanced scrolling settings on the touchpad. Let's look at the example of a device from Synaptics. There are two sections: one-finger and two-finger scrolling. In the first case, this is movement along the edge of the panel. In the second case, this is a simultaneous movement of two fingers anywhere on the panel. In the first section, check the box for the types of scrolling you want to use:

    • Enable vertical scrolling function - the touchpad will scroll when moving vertically along its right edge.
    • Enable horizontal scrolling when moving along the bottom edge.
    • Chiral Scrolling - continuous movement in a smooth circular motion. The faster you move, the faster it scrolls. The right side is for vertical rewinding and the bottom for horizontal rewinding. To scroll, you need to move in the desired direction and start making circular movements.
    • Moving the border - the ability to continue scrolling after the finger has reached the edge.
    • The “Inertia” function is convenient for viewing voluminous documents. Allows you to continue scrolling when your finger is removed in a given direction. To stop, you need to touch the panel again.

In the same section you can configure areas on the touchpad. If the zones allocated by the system at the edges seem too small to you or, conversely, wide, you can adjust the sizes yourself at this point.

To scroll with two fingers, check the appropriate boxes in the section for the horizontal and vertical functions. At this point you can enable boundary movement and inertia. To scroll the page with two fingers, do the following:

    1. Place both fingers on the panel, but don't place them too close or too far apart.
    2. Swipe in a straight line without interruption in the desired direction.
    3. To stop scrolling, raise your hand.

Synaptics, in addition to everything, offers to practice using all the features using the “Training” button, where you will be asked to navigate a special labyrinth on the screen.

In the properties window you can configure many more parameters that affect operation:

    • Scaling - similar to the function on tablets, you can adjust the speed and sensitivity or even turn it off.
    • Rotation - turning objects using gestures.
    • Specifying parameters - sensitivity, sliding, movement speed, pressure, movement optimization, boundary binding.
    • Buttons - assign actions to the right and left buttons.
    • Additional functions - related to ease of use, additional settings for light touch, quick access and others.

If simple device setup does not help, you need to check the drivers.

    Updating and reinstalling the driver

Sometimes the touchpad stops working after software or system updates; in other words, the driver crashes. Do the following:

If the computer displays a message that the drivers do not need to be updated and page scrolling does not work, follow these steps:

    1. Download the latest drivers for the laptop from the official website of the laptop manufacturer.
    2. Save and run the installer.
    3. Follow the instructions, after the process is completed, restart your computer.

If after this the touchpad still does not scroll pages, update the drivers manually:

If the previous instructions did not help, the problem may be in the hardware itself and you should take the laptop to a service center. Using a touchpad allows you to speed up work on your laptop and fully use programs without the need to connect a mouse. Developers often provide special software along with drivers to configure and improve the comfort of working with the device.

The easiest way is to turn on BT in Windows 7. To do this, you need to find the corresponding shortcut in the autorun panel (bottom right) and click on it, then open “Settings” and enable the module.

Please note that on the laptop you need to turn on not only Bluetooth itself, but also Networks (Wireless).

If there is a yellow exclamation mark in place of the arrow, then the device driver is not installed. You can read about how to fix this problem for any device in the series. In addition, it is possible that the module is disabled physically or from the BIOS.

We have already discussed how to enter BIOS or UEFI.

After the desired device is found, you need to update or manually find and reinstall the driver. We talked in detail about how to do this in.

    Taskbar doesn't work

Sometimes in Windows the so-called “bottom panel”, or Taskbar, may suddenly stop working. This happens especially often in Windows 10 as the youngest and not yet debugged system.

This command will force File Explorer to reboot.

    Skype

The popular messenger from Microsoft may not launch or work incorrectly for several reasons. Firstly, the program itself may be “mistaken”. In this case, you need to download a fresh distribution from the Skype website and reinstall it. Secondly, the messenger may not work for external reasons, for example, problems with sound, microphone, headphones or webcam. In this case, you should carry out diagnostics as we described in this cycle and restore the operation of the modules.

Today we’ll look at how you can enable the touchpad on a laptop in Windows 10. Many users don’t know what to do if the touchpad does not respond to touches and finger presses, but it’s simple:

    • there are problems with the device diver, which is not uncommon after updating Windows 10 or the driver in automatic mode;
    • The touchpad is simply disabled in the system settings.

    Turn on the device

One of the function keys F1-F12 in most cases is also responsible for turning the touchpad on/off. Which button does this can be understood based on the designation of the function buttons (in the screenshot it is F7). To use this function, you must simultaneously hold down the Fn key, located to the left of Space.

Usually, after this, an icon or inscription appears on the screen informing that the touchpad is working (activated). When pressed again, the device will be turned off again.

In most cases, if scrolling on the Windows 10 touchpad does not work or it does not respond to touches, this will be enough to get everything back to normal. In rare cases, the touchpad will need to be adjusted, especially when scrolling issues occur. To do this, call up the touch panel settings window.

    1. Open the Control Panel through the search.

    2. In the “View” form, select the icon visualization type as “Small icons”.

    3. Call the “Mouse” applet.

    4. In the mouse properties, go to the “ClicPad” tab, usually located last.

Usually the reason why the touchpad does not work, although it was enabled via keyboard hotkeys, is here.

    5. Turn on the device if it is deactivated in the control panel.

    6. Uncheck the option responsible for disabling the touchpad when connecting an external USB device for control (usually a mouse).

    7. Return the default settings (this may solve the problem when scrolling does not function).

    8. Go to additional “Options”.

This will open advanced settings for the touchpad, although everything there is configured in an optimal way for most users. In the window, you can configure gestures for the touchpad in Windows 10, change the speed and other scrolling settings, configure the sensor’s response to clicks, etc.

First, you should reset the settings to standard ones, and then you can change them to your own. We will not consider how to configure this or that parameter: there are no difficulties in this, and the process for each touchpad manufacturer is slightly different.

    Updating device drivers

The second reason why the touchpad may not function or work incorrectly is outdated/incorrect touchpad drivers.

The fact is that during automatic updating, Windows 10 selects the most suitable (in its opinion) drivers, downloading them from the Microsoft website, while ignoring official resources.

    Automatic update

Let's start with a simpler option - installing the driver through the Task Manager.

In this case, it will be downloaded from the Microsoft website, although the developer recommends reinstalling the drivers manually by downloading their official versions from the support site.

    1. Call the window through the Start context menu, called Win→X.

    2. Expand the item “Mice and other pointing devices”.

    3. Select the item to update the drivers of the selected equipment.

    4. Specify the automatic search type for newer software versions.

    5. We wait until the end of the search for the most suitable file.

    6. Install it or close the window if the file version is the latest.

Installing the driver from the developer's website

If the previous option did not solve the problem or the new driver was not found, you should download it from the laptop support resource.

    1. Go to the appropriate site.

    2. Find your device.

    3. Select a driver for the appropriate bit level installed on the Windows 10 PC.

    4. Upload the file.

    5. Launch the installer and follow the instructions.

Note: sometimes after updating the driver this way, Windows 10 can replace it with its own, downloaded from Microsoft servers, and cause problems that you just got rid of. In such a case, you should download the Show or Hide Updates utility and use it to disable the automatic search and download of drivers for the touchpad.

    More information

If the function key, which together with Fn should activate the touchpad, does not work, you should check the availability of specialized software from the laptop/netbook developer.

The touchpad may be disabled in the BIOS/UEFI. Study the instructions for your portable device, find the option with the word Touchpad, located in the peripherals section.
