Drawing with a Wacom pen tablet allows Illustrator a lot of advantages, quick drawing shapes, ease of application as compared to drawing with a mouse, width ratio and stylus pressure, and finally creating with a more natural and unique graphic style. In this article, we will look at how to set up a graphics tablet for ease of use and setting up Illustrator tools. vector graphics to create the correct bandwidth for illustration. I will also describe several practical exercises that allow you to quickly master the graphics tablet. So let's get started!

    Pen setup

Install a stylus for ease of use. The main tools for creating an image path are the Paintbrush Tool (B) and the Blob Brush Tool (Shift + B). The differences in their use will be discussed a little later.

In the Brushes panel (Window > Brushes), open the Artistic Calligraphy brush library from the drop-down menu (Open Brush Library > Artistic > Artistic_Calligraphic) and select any round shaped brush.

Double-clicking on the brush icon in the brushes panel brings up a window with settings. Set the brush diameter a little larger (for clarity), set the brush diameter dependency to pressure on the pen and the variation value, which is equal to the maximum diameter of the brush.

These options will allow us to change the width of the path from 0 to twice its width (60 points in my case). Take the Blob Brush Tool and set the points by changing the pen pressure as shown in the image below.

The goal of this exercise is to see if you can easily control the diameter of the brush. You should create as many circles of different diameters/sizes as possible. Particular attention should be paid to pressing the stylus with minimal pressure. You should try to achieve a very small brush diameter, as this allows you to create a variable width path without interruption.

If this exercise seemed difficult for you, do not worry, as the issue is not in your hands, but in the settings of the stylus. To access their preferences, Macintosh OS users must open System settings or docking station apple menu, or from the Applications folder. Then click on the WacomTablet icon. OS Windows user should click on the Start button and select All Programs. Then select your Wacom tablet and select Wacom tablet Properties. Now adjust the pressure sensitivity settings using the slider instead of closing the Wacom tablet in the properties window, repeat the exercise.

We had to harden the stylus away from the default setting. But it depends on your preference, but still it is very important parameter. You can learn about other tablet options from the user manual, but in most cases the default settings are acceptable.

    Setting up drawing tools

    Paint brush Tool (B)
To access the setup tool, double-click its icon in the toolbar.

Let's take a look at the options for the brush tool...

Precision controls how far you have to hover your mouse or stylus before Illustrator adds a new anchor point along the way. For example, a Fidelity value of 2.5 means that a motion tool less than 2.5 pixels is not registered. Accuracy can vary from 0.5 to 20 pixels; the higher the value, the smoother and less complex the path of the lines. The figure below shows two curves that were created with different values this parameter (4 and 0.5).

Smoothness controls the amount of smoothing that Illustrator applies when using the tool smoothness. Smoothness can range from 0% to 100%, the higher the percentage, the smoother the path.

What value should Fidelity and Smoothness be set to? I personally find that the optimal Fidelity value is 4px and smoothness is 0%. Of course, this depends on your drawing style and the challenge you set to achieve.
Fill New Brush Strokes refers to fills in a way. This option is especially useful when designing closed toolpaths.

Keep Selected Allows you to set up an existing line.

Edit Selected Paths determines whether an existing path can be changed. For example, you can continue the created path.

The: [x] pixels determines how close the mouse or stylus should be to the existing path to change the Paintbrush Tool. This option is only available with the Edit Selected Paths option.
The last three options are usually disabled during most illustrations, but you should be aware of their existence for specific tasks.

Blob Brush Tool (Shift + B)
The Blob brush tool differs from the Paintbrush Tool (B) in that it creates resutant strokes by creating an enclosed path in desired shape. It can also automatically connect previously drawn areas to new strokes in a manner similar to the Pathfinder toolbox. Also, note that there is no Center "Bezier Splines" for the Blob Brush Tool, which does limit fine editing later, but it does allow finer editing with the Eraser Tool (Shift + E).

To access the tool's settings, double-click on its icon in the toolbar.

You are familiar with some of the options. Let's meet new ones.

Merge only with Selection indicates that new strokes will only be merged with existing ones in the selected path. If you choose this option, new object does not merge with another intersect path that is not selected.

As you noticed, the size, angle and roundness can be set directly in the Blob Brush Options dialog, without creating new brush or using the library brush, as I did with the Paintbrush Tool (B). It's more convenient.

Now let's look into the calligraphy brush options that can allow you to access full spectrum Brush Capabilities. Fixed creates a brush with a fixed angle, roundness, or diameter (default without using a tablet).

Random creates a brush with random variations in angle, roundness, or diameter (this is without using a tablet). Type a value in the edit box to specify the range in which the characteristics of the brush can vary. For example, if the Diameter is 15 and the Change Value is 5, the Diameter can be 10 or 20, or any value in between. The two strokes in the picture below were made with a brush with a random setting. The brush diameter depends on the distance to the lines, but not when creating a path.

Pressure creates a brush that changes in angle, roundness, and diameter based on the drawing pressure of the tablet pen. This option is most useful when using a diameter. It is only available if you have a graphics tablet such as Wacom's Bamboo, Intuos and Cintiq series. Type a value in the change box to specify how much the original value of the brush characteristic will change. For example, when the Roundness value is 75% and the value change is 25%, the lightest stroke is 50%, and the most severe stroke is 100%. The lighter the pressure, the larger the angled brushes.

The stylus wheel creates a brush that changes in diameter based on stylus control manipulation. This option is for use with a pen airbrush that has a wheel stylus on its barrel and a graphics tablet that can tell it's a pen.
Tilt creates a brush that changes in angle, roundness, and diameter based on the tilt of the drawing with the stylus. This option is most useful when using roundness. It's only available if you have a graphics tablet that can detect how close to vertical the pen is. The figure below shows two vertical lines with different levels tilt.

Bearing creates a brush that changes in angle, roundness, and diameter based on the size of the pen. This feature is very useful when used to control the angle of a calligraphy brush, especially when you use the brush as a brush. It is only available if you have a graphics tablet that can detect which direction the pen is leaning. The figure below shows horizontal line, while creating I tilt the Stylus in the other direction.

Rotation creates a brush that changes in angle, roundness, or diameter depending on whether the stylus pen tip is rotated. This feature is very useful when used to control the angle of a calligraphy brush, especially when you use the brush like flat pens. It is only available if you have a graphics tablet that can detect this type of rotation.

I think that's enough theory for today. Let's practice. Exercise 1 To begin, let's learn how to create lines of varying thickness, the shapes most commonly used in graphic works. The brush settings should be as simple as possible (brush, diameter depends on pressure).

Not everyone knows how hard it is to create paintings for artists. Dilution of paints, preparation of the canvas, a whole bunch of other tools. Everything in the world of design more space is given to applications that make it easier to work with programs for working with graphics. The leading position among all gadgets is occupied by a graphics tablet.

It is thanks to him that modern designers have received a number of advantages, such as convenience in drawing illustrations to the smallest detail (which could not be achieved using a mouse), the ability to control the thickness of the pen line depending on the pressure.

In a programme Adobe Illustrator drawing on a tablet is possible with such tools as a pencil, brush and brush-blot. It is about them that we will talk in this article. But we will focus on how to set up such tools to work with a graphics tablet.

I want to note that the brush tool is most convenient to use for a drawing consisting of lines of different thicknesses, and the pencil tool is best suited for drawing silhouettes.

    Let's get started!

The most important thing is a properly tuned pen

Open Window - Brushes and select any round brush. Double-click on the icon of the brush you have chosen, as a result of which a dialog box with its settings opens. In this window, set the following parameters: Diameter - 10, pen pressure, 10 (equal to the maximum diameter of the brush). Such parameters will allow us to further change the thickness of the contour depending on the degree of pressure from 0 to double the size.

To check what we got, select the Blob Brush Tool and start putting points with different degrees of pressure.

Having trained in this way, you will be able to create a contour with different thicknesses without interrupting it, which is extremely useful when drawing.

If you have not been able to draw with different pressures, then I advise you to play around with the pen settings of the tablet itself, which are located in the Start menu - All Programs - Wacom Tablet - Wacom Tablet Properties. Adjust the Pen Sensitivity parameter until you can draw such a line without much difficulty.

Customize the tool Brush (Paintbrush Tool)

Double-click on the icon of this tool on the Toolbar to open the settings window. Now let's get acquainted with the parameters of the Brush tool.

Fill new brush strokes - when this option is selected, the program applies a fill to the path, which is especially useful when drawing closed paths.

Keep selected - when selected given parameter the program leaves the path selected after it is finished drawing.

Editing area of selected contours - when this option is selected, you can make changes to the selected contour.

Within: _ pixels (becomes available when the previous option is selected) - indicates how close the brush must be to an existing path in pixels in order to make changes to the path.

Setting up the Blob Brush Tool

Double-click on the icon of this tool on the Toolbar to open the settings window. Now let's get acquainted with the parameters of the Blob Brush tool.

Keep selected - when this option is selected, the program automatically keeps the outlines selected while drawing continues.

Merge with selection only - when this option is selected, the program merges a new stroke with an existing selection.

Accuracy - shows how far you can move the brush before the program automatically adds a new anchor point. Available values are from 0.5 to 20 pixels. The higher the value you set, the less complex the path you create (with fewer anchor points) and the smoother it will be.

Smoothing — show the degree of smoothing when drawing. Available values are from 0 to 100%. The higher the percentage you choose, the smoother the outline will be when drawing.

Size - set the size of the brush.

Angle - choose the angle of rotation of the brush.

Roundness - shows the roundness of the brush (the larger its value, the more roundness).

    Customizing the Pencil Tool

Double-click on the icon of this tool on the Toolbar to open the settings window. Now let's get acquainted with the parameters of the Pencil tool.

Deviation - is responsible for the frequency of adding new anchor points when drawing with a pencil. The higher the value, the less sharp the corners will be and vice versa.

Smoothness - is responsible for the degree of smoothing when drawing. The higher the value, the smoother and smoother the created path will be.

Fill New Pencil Strokes - This option allows the program to apply the fill applied to the stroke. Don't forget to choose a fill color before painting.

Keep Path Selected - Selecting this option allows you to keep the path selected after it has been created.

The edit zone for selected paths determines whether the selected path can be modified or merged when the pointer is at a certain distance from it (specified by the following parameter).

Within: 20 pixels. (available if the previous option is selected) - shows how close the pencil must be to an existing outline in order to be able to make changes to the path.

To restore the default settings, simply click the Restore button.
