How to connect to free VPN Gate servers using the SoftEther VPN client application for Windows (SSL-VPN).

A simple, convenient and fast way to establish an anonymous VPN connection

This guide shows how to use the SoftEther VPN client application to connect to free VPN Gate relay servers. This is a very simple, convenient and fast way to establish a VPN connection. Please note that SoftEther VPN only works on Windows systems. Mac, iPhone/iPad or Android device users will need to choose a different connection method:

Connecting to VPN Gate using SoftEther VPN

    1. Install SoftEther VPN client application with VPN Gate plugin

    Download SoftEther VPN for Windows

Unzip the contents of the archive into a folder.

As shown in the screenshot, the folder will contain several library files and an installation program.

Run the “vpngate-client-...” installer and follow the installation wizard prompts.

Select “SoftEther VPN Client” on the “Select Software Components to Install” screen. After installation is complete, a SoftEther VPN Client icon will be created on the desktop.

    2. Launch the VPN Gate plugin and connect to the server

Double-click the SoftEther VPN Client icon on your desktop.

As shown in the screenshot, the “VPN Gate Public VPN Relay Servers” icon will appear in the main window. Double click on it. If notifications appear, continue with setup.

Then launch the “VPN Gate Academic Experiment Project Plugin for SoftEther VPN Client” component.

On this screen you can see a list of currently open VPN Gate servers. This list is identical to the list on the main VPN Gate page. Select one of the servers and click the “Connect to VPN server” button.

If the selected VPN Gate server supports TCP and UDP protocols, the following screen will appear. Select one of the protocols.

If the VPN connection is established successfully, the following message will appear. The window will automatically close after 5 seconds. If you are unable to connect to any server, try using a different server.

    3. Internet without restrictions

When the VPN connection is established, a Virtual Network Adapter is created on the Windows system. This adapter will receive an IP address that starts with “10.211”. The virtual adapter will receive the default gateway address.

You will be able to check your network configuration by running the command in the Windows Command Prompt.

Once the connection is established, all traffic will go through the VPN server. You can verify this using the command in the Windows command line.

As shown in the screenshot above, if packets pass through for "10.211.254.254", then your connection is being relayed through one of the VPN Gate servers. You can also go to the main VPN Gate page to view the global IP address. You will be able to see the location visible from the network, which will differ from your actual location.

When connected to a VPN, you will be able to visit blocked websites and play blocked games.

"VPN Gate Client" is a specialized VPN client software for connecting to a Public Relay VPN server on an online list of VPN servers from the VPN Gate Project. It is very similar to Tor, however, VPN Gate is easier to use and all kinds of protocols can be transferred. VPN Gate works faster than Tor or other anonymous Internet systems. Experiment The VPN Gate Academic Project (http://www.vpngate.net/) is an Internet service as a research project at the Graduate School of the University of Tsukuba, Japan. The purpose of this study is to expand the knowledge about "Global Distributed Public Relay VPN Servers". VPN Gate consists of a large number of public VPN Really servers. Globally distributed anonymous volunteers provide everyone with a Public Relay VPN server on their home computer, and the VPN Gate directory server provides a list of active VPN servers. OpenVPN, L2TP/IPsec, SSL-VPN and SSTP are supported, so any computer or smartphone can connect to the VPN server in the list. You can take three benefits if you use VPN Gate: 1.You can bypass the government firewall to view foreign websites (such as YouTube). 2.You can mask your IP address to hide the source of sending information over the Internet. 3.You can secure your Wi-Fi usage with strong encryption.

    Seven popular VPN services

Unlike existing VPN services, VPN Gate has strong resistance against firewalls. VPN Gate is free. No registration required. For more information about VPN Gate, please visit http://www.vpngate.net/en/. As you can see at http://www.vpngate.net/en/lastlog.aspx, a large number of users from countries around the world use VPN Gate to access foreign websites. There are many countries that have a "Government Firewall" to block their citizen's freedom of internet access. VPN Gate is a service that helps such people bypass government firewall censorship. The University of Tsukuba VPN Gate Project is trying to realize a new-era use of VPN from everyone and every location outside the border.

VPN Gate Client is a plugin for the SoftEther VPN program designed to protect your anonymity when using a virtual network. In particular, it avoids transmitting data about the real IP to the remote server. This is achieved by using a proxy. Of course, the VPN + proxy combination greatly slows down the surfing speed, but it provides an extremely high (we would even say “ultimate”) level of security.

Let's talk a little about what SoftEther VPN is.

We are building tunnels. Understanding the latest VPN products

As the name suggests, this program is a client for connecting to a virtual network. But this is not at all one of those modern solutions that establish a connection to the server with the press of a single key and require you to pay a monthly subscription. This client requires you to specify data for connecting to a virtual network yourself, or to import ready-made configurations provided by a third-party provider. Essentially, this is an alternative to OpenVPN. Unlike the latter, this program has a more intuitive GUI and offers more connection parameters by emulating its own virtual network adapter.

So, by installing VPN Gate Client as an extension for SoftEther, you add proxy support to the program. The plugin itself contains a list of free servers (mainly in Asian countries), but it is not recommended to use them. As we said earlier, free proxies are unlikely to allow you to “surf” comfortably. Unless you visit very “light” sites, or the image loading function is disabled in your browser.

Recently, the VPN Gate Client installer already includes the SoftEther client (or vice versa - whichever is more convenient for you). That is, you do not need to download and install the VPN client itself. By the way, the client itself and the extension for it are completely free and open source. The only drawback that we cannot fail to mention is the lack of Russian localization. If you don't know English, then working with VPN Gate Client can be a little difficult.

    Key Features

    • ensuring anonymity through the use of proxy servers;
    • work only “in conjunction” with the SoftEther VPN client;
    • fast integration into the client;
    • own list of free servers (mainly located in Korea and Japan);
    • free distribution.

    VPN Gate Academic Experiment

Every time there is a need to use some kind of VPN service, I go into a stupor and spend many hours finding and launching the software. I am preparing an article on setting up the SoftEther VPN program. The software runs on Windows 10.

    Step 1. Download the client.

After downloading and unpacking, we start the installation.

    Step 2. Client installation.

    Install the program:

    • Select the installation of the SoftEther VPN Client program;
    • We agree with all agreements;
    • Select the directory (or the standard one).

Wait for the program installation to complete and then proceed to:

Step 3. First launch and setup.

The proposed version has a following interface.

Launch the plugin by double clicking on the line VPN Gate Public VPN Relay Servers, which will help you automatically find active VPN servers. A window pops up:

Click Refresh List to update the list of servers.

How to use VPN Gate - instructions for beginners

We sort by Ping and Region. We select the required region and server with the lowest ping (the main thing is that the ping indicates a number, not a symbol).

Having selected a server, click on the big button below Connect to the VPN Server. We skip the next window until we get to selecting the connection type:

They offer to connect TCP or UDP Protocol. We try the first option, if it gives an error, then the second option. If none of the options connect, then we try another server.

If the connection is successful, we see a window like this:

Now you can safely go about your business on closed or restricted sites.

    Step 4. Shut down.

Returning to the initial program window:

After connecting to the server, a new line appears. Right-click on it and select an action Disconnet.

    Enjoy!

relies on the client to hide your real IP address when browsing the Internet, so you can access places where your IP is blocked.

VPN Gate Client Plug-in is an add-on to the client part of SoftEther VPN, with which you can provide yourself with online anonymity. The plugin also includes SoftEther client, so there is no need to download it separately. To launch the plugin, after starting the client, in the main window you need to select VPN Gate Public VPN Relay Servers, then a new window will open in front of you with a list of VPN servers, after which you can select the one you want to connect to.

VPN Gate Client Plug-in gives you a large list of servers, you can view their IP address, region, uptime, line speed and other parameters. It is recommended to choose a VPN server that is closer to your location (I don’t think you will be able to do this). Next, we connect to the desired server and rejoice, now you can safely visit prohibited websites. Most of the servers in the VPN Gate Client Plug-in are located in Korea and Japan, with a few in the USA and Europe.

VPN Gate is a useful client application for working with the SoftEther VPN network, the main task of which is the ability to hide the user’s identity on the network. The process of providing user anonymity works thanks to a relay network of proxy servers that hide the IP address. The program is a client module, which facilitates operation and access to the necessary services that are limited in a given region. Helps protect valuable information, provides quick access to blocked resources (torrent trackers, Rdio, Pandora, Spotify). A limited number of countries have access to these resources. Allows you to mask the user's IP address and encrypt contact information when accessing the Internet via a public Wi-Fi network. The program does not require registration, has good speed and ping.

    - A client application that helps you access blocked resources.
    - Works great thanks to servers with a dynamic IP address.
    - Helps protect valuable information.
    - Provides a list with various servers, which provides information about the region, address, connection speed.
    - Most servers are located in China and Japan, but there are points in Europe and the USA.
    - Allows you to mask your IP address and encrypt contact information when accessing the Internet through a public Wi-Fi beacon.
    - Has fairly simple controls.
    - Provides the necessary anonymity and leaves no traces.

    Disadvantages of the program

    - There is no portable version.
    - There is no Russian language.

As they would say in a report at the Party Congress, about 30 years ago, “The current political situation in the world has taken a serious turn.” Russia is under sanctions, and although this has not affected the majority of the country, the petty machinations of the “imperialists” will spoil the mood. I'm talking about blocking access to some servers and services on the Internet. The thing is not terrible, but, you see, it is unpleasant.

Now we will do something to get rid of them. Error 403 is precisely a ban on access to a site, or a specific subsection of it; it often occurs if your computer is prohibited from receiving data from there, and this was not done by your provider, but by the owners of the site itself. What to do if error 403 appears over and over again? How to get rid of 403 error? This is what we will do now.

It is easy to determine where a particular computer is located using its external IP address. The IP address of a computer is, so to speak, the “return address” that is contained in a request to receive a specific page or file.

    How to use

Having received a request, the site you are trying to view sends a response to the address that was specified. But, if the territory where you live is included in the “black list”, then you will not receive an answer. And they will send you the picture that I gave just above. In order to obtain the required information, there are several ways, such as working through a proxy server and working through a VPN server, for example. We will consider the second option. I recommend it because it is more stable in terms of operation and usually provides greater speed and information content.

Let's get started. Let’s put FREE VPN SERVER in the search bar, “free” - in our case it means “free”, naturally we are not going to pay the enemies for doing all sorts of minor dirty tricks to us.

I hid the first few answers - they are not quite suitable for us, but we will switch to Japanese development - website http://vpngate.net

The gray square in the picture hides my real IP address, these are insidious samurai trying to intimidate visitors, saying that “we know everything about you.” Well, you know - and okay, there’s nothing wrong with that, thousands of users connect to you every second, including from the USA and the European Union. In its place you will have the flag of your country and your IP address.

In the top menu of the page, select the line “Download” (in English – “Download”) and in the menu the first line – “Download VPN Gate Client”. You can connect to the servers included in the free VPN Gate network in many different ways, but for a Windows-based computer, the one proposed is optimal - it is convenient, easy to set up and, in my opinion, is not inferior to others in speed. On the next page we find and click on the link to download the archive with the files we need:

Don’t worry if your grade in foreign languages at school was, to put it mildly, “not very good,” I will guide you through the entire installation and configuration procedure. So, click on the link:

This is a FireFox browser window asking where to save the file. Do you have a different browser? Well then the window will look a little different, but the essence will not change. After downloading the file, and this is a ZIP archive, you need to open it by double-clicking on the name of the just downloaded file. As a result, if you do not have other programs for working with archives installed, you will see something like this:

This is how Windows displays the contents of ZIP archives. If you have a third-party archiver installed and you don’t know how to use it, right-click on the archive file and select “Open with” > “Explorer” from the drop-down menu:

Our task is to extract all files from the archive, so we select:

The result of the command is shown in the following figure. The specific address where the files will be unpacked on my computer has been obscured; yours will probably be slightly different. It is very important for a beginner to leave the “Show extracted files” checkbox in place, then after unpacking you will immediately go to the folder where the files extracted from the archive are located.

Is there a familiar picture just below? No, I'm not repeating myself. These are already unzipped files in a folder on your computer. See the icon next to the application file? Previously it did not exist, since Windows does not fully display file icons inside archives.

Run the file by double clicking the mouse:

This is a standard warning that the file was downloaded from the Internet and may be dangerous. Don’t be alarmed, if you downloaded it from my link, then the file is not infected, although, of course, working on the Internet without an antivirus installed is like Russian Roulette.

In the installer welcome window that opens, click the “Next” button. And in the next window we leave the choice of the top line of options for further actions:

After clicking the “Next” button in the previous window, we get the license agreement:

Of course we agree with him, how could it be otherwise? “Next” again and begin installing the VPN Gate network support client.

The installation process is quite concise and quick, and the inscriptions in the window change about 4-5 times; upon completion, you will be presented with a window like this with a checkmark next to the “Launch VPN Gate client” command.

This is actually what we were trying to achieve. Click “Finish” and get the main program window:

Next is quite a bit. Double-click on the line marked in the previous figure:

Now you see a list of servers through which you can safely and secretly work on the Internet, even if the region where you are now is blocked by all conceivable “sanctions”.

Briefly about the names of the columns by which you can sort the servers in the desired order. The first two are fairly indifferent to us, but the third contains the name of the country or region where the server providing its services is located.

If you choose to sort servers by region of location, click on the name of the column - Region, in this case we have servers from the country JAPAN - Japan at the top of the list. The next column is UPTIME - it tells us the time in hours, how long this server has been working continuously. It is useful because by comparing the operating time with the following column VPN SESSIONS (the number of users working at a given minute), you can imagine whether a given server is viable or not. Maybe something is stuck there, and even though the server has been running for 3 days, it actually has zero users. You should not connect to such a server.

The next column – LINE SPEED – shows the speed at which this gateway operates. This is also very informative data. If you divide the data from the “speed” column by the “number of users” data, you can roughly imagine how quickly you will work through this server, that is, how quickly files will download and pages will open.

If your provider provides you with Internet access at a speed of 100 megabits, and the VPN server provides only 3 megabits, then, at best, your speed will be limited to 3 megabits, or maybe a little more. Choose either to use the option I suggested, or buy access to a paid VPN service, or... forget about free access to the network.

I believe you don’t want to pay extra money, so let’s continue with the brief instructions. The third line (line, not column!) in the above window shows in the column a speed of 355 megabits and only 10 users. Click on the LINE SPEED column name and the fastest servers will appear at the top of the list. For the first connection attempt, I chose a “simpler” server with a speed of 92 megabits, divided between 3 users. The server is located in South Korea, and we will try to connect to it. Select the line with the server parameters and double-click on it, or click the “Connect to the VPN Server” button at the bottom of the window:

The next window will prompt you to select some connection parameters:

There are no tips here, except for one thing - try this and that, putting a “dot” first at the top, then on the bottom line, if the first option ends in failure. The connection process looks like this:

    Here's an unsuccessful attempt:

I recommend interrupting the connection process by clicking the Cancel Connection button, as shown in the figure above, and selecting a different server or connection parameters. Unfortunately, the free nature of the network somewhat imposes restrictions on the stability of its operation. If the connection is successful, you will first be shown the following window:

And when the connection is fully established it looks like this:

It means that when you access a site that previously blocked access by IP address, your computer is now seen as a computer located in a completely different part of the world. The following figure shows your current IP address on the Internet:

Now you can try the connection that failed before, with a 99.9% probability it will work this time, and the machinations of the sharks of imperialism will no longer harm you.

Having completed everything that you previously could not do, disconnect from the VPN Gate - there is no need to work at low speed. To do this, right-click on the line of the active connection and select the line in the “Disconnect All” menu:

After a few seconds, you will be disconnected from the VPN server and will be visible to sites on the Internet under your own address.

In conclusion of this instruction, a couple of general comments.

    1. Don’t be upset if you weren’t able to enter under the flag of the USA or some other very “cool” country. Sometimes servers located in the Russian Federation work just as stably, and are closer and therefore faster. This is especially true for Crimeans, who are harshly treated by Google and other bourgeois mugs.
    2. Periodic disconnection of the connection, unfortunately, happens, but I don’t suggest working via VPN forever. Once you have downloaded the required file or opened a page, disconnect!
    3. Speed. Yes, speed. This, unfortunately, is the bottleneck in this technology. However, free proxy servers, in my opinion, are even slower, so the choice is yours.
    4. Sometimes, when accessing pages that have different language options, you may be redirected to a page with the language of the country under which you entered. This doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Just select a different language on the page, usually at the top of the site there is a menu with flags for different countries - choose your native one, or at least the one whose language you know.
    5. The very last one. Sometimes, after the connection is lost, you will not be able to log into sites on the Internet using your usual address. This also doesn't happen often. But still, if this happens, just restart your computer, or router, if you have one installed.
