Review of Huawei Honor 6X 32Gb+4Gb Dual LTE Gold

The Honor line has been separated from Huawei into a separate brand in order to compete with devices in the mid-price segment, namely those devices that offer smartphones with good hardware and a premium appearance for relatively little money. Last year, Honor released a model that gained a lot of attention and achieved great sales - Honor 5X. But time passes, everything improves, and today I have a descendant of the 5X on review - Huawei Honor 6X. Let's see what it is and whether it can worthily take the place of its much-selling predecessor.

The design of the smartphone is not surprising. It is pleasant and cute to look at, but at the same time simple. The body is made of metal. We also see plastic inserts at the top and bottom.

The location of all controls is standard. On the right side there is a lock button and a volume rocker. On the left side there is a slot for two SIM cards or one SIM and one memory card.

At the top end there is a 3.5 mm audio jack and a microphone for noise reduction. And on the bottom there is a micro USB port, the main speaker of the smartphone and a conversational microphone.

The rear panel here is equipped with a dual main camera, the eyes of which are located on a pedestal protruding above the panel. Its surface is covered with symmetrical circular grooves. There is also an LED flash and a fingerprint scanner.

The front panel is covered with 2.5D glass with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. There is a speaker, front camera, sensors and an LED event indicator. There are no touch keys under the display; they are on the screen.

The smartphone is produced in the following colors: gold, silver, dark gray, blue and pink. Honor 6X is assembled perfectly and evokes only positive comments. In terms of ergonomics, I can say that, like all smartphones with a metal back, it slips out of the hand a little. Otherwise there are no complaints. The dimensions of the device were 150.9 x 76.2 x 8.2 mm, and the weight was 162 grams.

The front panel, among other things, houses a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels and a pixel density of 401 ppi per inch. The display quality is high. We see maximum viewing angles, excellent color reproduction and a good margin of maximum brightness. Auto-adjustment works properly. And the anti-reflective coating will allow the user to work comfortably in sunlight. In the display settings, if desired, you can adjust the color temperature, select the font size and viewing scale of applications, and turn on the vision protection mode, which removes the colors of the blue spectrum that cause eye fatigue.

Honor 6X is powered by an 8-core HiSilicon Kirin 655 with a maximum clock frequency of 2.1 GHz. Graphics accelerator - Mali T830. There is 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory installed on board. There are also modifications with 3 GB of RAM and 32 built-in and 4 GB of RAM and 64 built-in. The volume of the inserted micro SD card can be up to 128 GB. The filling is not top-end, but it can confidently cope with all possible modern loads. She can work calmly in multitasking mode and at the same time be nimble and smooth. As for 3D games, the smartphone handles them calmly and without noticeable heating at maximum settings. Only sometimes you can notice microlags, but this is not critical. In general, the hardware is excellent, for a mid-price smartphone.

Honor 6X runs Android 7.0 Marshmallow. Huawei branded shell - Emotion UI version 5.0. To decorate the shell, you can change the theme from the available ones or download a new one. A nice feature was the automatic change of wallpaper on the lock screen. Another convenient point is that the navigation buttons can be swapped at your discretion. The curtain here is not like other smartphones. If you swipe right from the very top of the device, a curtain with notifications and settings appears, and if you swipe from half of the display, a list of recommended applications appears and a search for them appears. When locked, the smartphone can offer fast functions such as a voice recorder, calculator, flashlight and camera. This list opens by swiping from the clock from bottom to top.

In general, the shell is very convenient, concise and with a good set of useful and well-thought-out functions. The smartphone supports the following interfaces: Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, microUSB 2.0, USB OTG. Functioning navigation systems: GPS and GLONASS. Mobile networks support both 3G and 4G.

The main camera has two eyes with a resolution of 12 megapixels and 2 megapixels, respectively. The main module is Sony IMX386. It is equipped with phase focusing and its speed is 0.3 seconds. The second eye is used in a certain mode to focus on one object and beautifully blur the background. When shooting this way, the aperture changes from F/0.95 to F/16.

The pictures come out decent for a mid-price smartphone. Both the detailing and color rendition are pleasantly pleasing. The camera interface is convenient and simple. In addition to a variety of ready-made shooting modes, there is a professional mode where you can independently configure the main parameters for creating photos. Video recording by the camera is carried out in a maximum resolution of 1920x1080.

The front camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels and its capabilities are quite standard. It is perfect for taking self-portraits and video calls.

As for the operating time, there is a 3340 mAh battery installed here. The manufacturer stated that in mixed operating mode the gadget will last 2 days, when listening to music - 70 hours, when watching videos - 11.5 hours, and in gaming mode - 8 hours. From this we can conclude that the Honor 6X, despite not having the largest battery capacity, is quite durable and its energy consumption is so optimized that even under heavy load it can easily survive a full daylight hours. The smartphone is fully charged in 2 hours 45 minutes.

Having taken a closer look at this device, you understand that Huawei Honor 6X is a very worthy, powerful and beautiful smartphone for the middle price segment, and it justifies its cost to the last penny. I really liked him. What about you?

Honor 6X is the first smartphone of the famous Chinese brand Huawei, which was introduced in 2017. Its presentation took place on January 4 at CES 2017, and it went on sale immediately after the end of the New Year's celebrations.

Honor 6X is available in 2 modifications, each of which differs in the amount of internal and RAM memory: 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory, as well as 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory. Now we will review Huawei Honor 6X 32 GB. This model is an original combination of good characteristics and reasonable cost. Being a representative of the budget segment, Huawei Honor 6X is equipped with a stylish aluminum body, a dual camera and a fingerprint sensor on the rear panel, which is more common to see on more expensive smartphones.

Before reviewing the Huawei Honor 6X 32gb smartphone, let's briefly look at the characteristics of this gadget.

    Equipment

The phone is sold in beautiful blue boxes made of thick cardboard. The device is supplied with brief instructions, a charger (2A/5A) with a USB cable, and a clip for removing the SIM tray.

    Design

The Huawei Honor 6X smartphone boasts an attractive design. Thanks to the rounded ends and narrowed side edges, this model looks more interesting than the angular Honor 5 X with its straight ends. The sloping sides, rounded corners and thin profile also create a pleasant appearance. We are considering a gray Honor 6x with 32 GB. This model is also available in gold and light silver colors.

But upon closer acquaintance with the smartphone, the disadvantages in the appearance of Huawei Honor 6X become noticeable. First of all, it is impossible not to notice the shabby side frame around the display. This part is a standard gasket found on glass that covers the screen. However, in this case it turned out to be of low quality and cheap. In addition, this frame does not fit tightly to the glass in some areas; gaps are noticeable, which is not significant, but worsens the “appearance” of the device.

The Huawei Honor 6X case is not all-metal: the middle part of the rear panel is made of high-quality metal. The end elements and, accordingly, the corners are made of plastic.

The matte surface of the back panel of the case and the side edges are not easily soiled, but are too slippery to hold in one hand. The front glass does not have an oleophobic coating, as a result of which fingers glide on it poorly, and fingerprints accumulate instantly. All this negatively affects the comfort of using the gadget, in particular, during the game the finger no, no, and even slides to the wrong place. From the first days, Huawei Honor 6X should be placed in a protective case and a protective film should be glued to it. These are additional expenses.

The main interface components on the Huawei Honor 6X body are located as standard for Huawei smartphones, although many users do not like the lack of hardware touch keys under the screen. The company logo appears under the display. There's nothing else there. This looks like some kind of mockery: if there are no keys under the display, wouldn’t it be wiser to reduce the size of this part?

The entire front part is occupied by 2.5D glass with sloping edges. Above the display there are sensors, an event indicator, and a front camera lens without a flash.

On the back you can see a slightly protruding dual main camera module with a single, very bright flash. A fingerprint scanner is located just below. Using it, you can unlock the screen, scroll through the menu, manage calls and alarms, and take pictures with the camera. The scanner functions perfectly, recognition occurs almost instantly and without errors, and from any angle. The phone's memory can store up to 5 different fingerprints.

The keys on the side do not cause any complaints: they are quite large, moderately hard, have a springy action and can be easily felt blindly.

The bottom end is equipped with a microUSB connector; the smartphone supports connecting external devices, including flash drives in a special USB OTG mode. There is a pair of grilles located symmetrically around the end of the connector, but only one of them (the right one) hides the speaker.

At the top end, as before, there is a 3.5 mm jack for connecting a stereo headset. The hole for an additional microphone is also located here.

    Display

The Huawei Honor 6 X has a 5.5-inch LPTS TFT screen with a resolution of 1080×1920 and a density of 403 ppi per 1 inch. It is equipped with a light sensor and automatic brightness level adjustment. It is protected from minor damage by 2.5D protective glass. If we consider Huawei Honor 6X separately from its predecessors, then the quality of its display can be called excellent. But if we compare it with competitors, then, for example, on the Lenovo K6 Note the image remains equally bright at all viewing angles, while on the Huawei Honor 6X it turns white. Fortunately, this can only be noticed through direct comparison, but in real life it is almost impossible to detect this.

In auto mode, the display backlight, as a rule, does not exceed 40%. The colors come out not too bright, muted. It is not possible to manually raise the display to the maximum level; reaching the maximum brightness of 450 nits is only possible in auto mode and in the sun (the screen remains perfectly readable, and everything is perfectly visible).

The quality of the display on the Honor 6 X is above average for smartphones in this price segment, and it has no serious drawbacks. A sharp reduction in brightness does not bother you: you can easily get used to this feature of this model. The display is very convenient to work with.

In the Huawei Honor 6X display settings, you can select the optimal color temperature, select the appropriate scale for common applications and data in them, and activate eye protection (a special yellow background for images). As part of the mode to improve clarity in the sun, you can set the backlight brightness to maximum (the same 450 nits). When turned off, the backlight is 380 nits.

In general, the Huawei Honor 6X display is not only good in itself, but also boasts a lot of serious features that the user can easily customize.

    Sound

The sound quality of the Honor 6X is average, both in the speakers and in the headphones. But the sound is pure, without the slightest impurities, the volume margin is acceptable, although the predominance of very high frequencies is noticeable. There are no deep bass. The speaker does not have low frequencies. Surround sound only occurs in headphones. The vibrating alert is average in power; there are no manual adjustments for it.

    Cameras

The dual main camera consists of 2-megapixel and 12-megapixel modules. The main module - Sony IMX386 - is equipped with phase detection autofocus, focusing speed does not exceed 0.3 s. Using a pair of lenses allows you to blur the background and then focus on the subject (it only works when the subject is close). This separate mode can be enabled in the camera menu. In this case, the aperture can be changed in the range f/0.95 - f/16.

The camera interface is extremely simple; in the default mode you can adjust white balance, shutter speed and other characteristics. There are also ready-made photography modes, for example, for photographing all kinds of dishes. The camera's service capabilities include shooting from a locked state using the side volume control key (you need to click a couple of times), autofocus on a specific moving object, and other interesting settings.

The 8-megapixel front camera does not shine with special characteristics: the shooting quality is standard for selfie cameras of a budget model, there is nothing to praise or scold it for.

    Memory and memory card

We, as mentioned above, are reviewing the Honor 6 X with 3 Gb of RAM and 32 Gb of internal memory, of which only 24 Gb is available to the user. By clearing the memory and closing all applications, you can get 1.9 GB of RAM. If necessary, the internal memory can be expanded by installing a microSD memory card instead of the 2nd SIM card. You can format the memory card to install various applications on it. In the special USB OTG mode, you can connect an external flash drive.

    Connection

Honor 6X supports LTE Cat.4 (up to 155 Mb/s), 5 LTE FDD frequency bands, including band 20, 7, 3. There are no complaints about the quality of signal reception, at least within large cities.

The device supports only one Wi-fi band (2.4 GHz), Bluetooth 4.1 is available. The NFC module is capable of working with electric travel cards.

Through the micro-USB connector, Huawei Honor 6X supports connecting all kinds of external devices in USB OTG mode. The navigation module is able to work equally well with both domestic Glonass and GPS (including A-GPS) and Beidou. With a cold start, the first satellites can be identified in a minute, the positioning clarity is low, some state employees can boast of more efficiently functioning navigation modules.

The phone application supports Smart Dial. Contacts are displayed and sorted using standard methods for an Android smartphone.

Huawei Honor 6X cannot simultaneously work with a pair of SIM cards in 4G/3G. This means that, for example, the SIM card will not function in 3G for voice communication if you have assigned a different slot to 4G data. The interface, as before, does not allow you to select a specific card for SMS and calls in advance, only when connecting. Both SIM cards operate in the special Dual SIM Dual Standby mode.

    Battery life and performance

Honor 6 X is equipped with a non-removable 3340 mAh battery. Under normal operating conditions, a full charge lasts for a day. The normal mode includes visiting social networks, half an hour of voice calls, watching 4 videos, taking 20 photos, surfing the web for 3 hours, communicating in various instant messengers.

At maximum loads, the Huawei Honor 6X smartphone can work for 10 hours.

PCMark testing has shown that with a fully charged battery, this smartphone can provide:

    • 5 hours of playing “non-heavy” video games at 50% brightness with wi-fi turned on;
    • 7 hours of watching videos in FullHD resolution at maximum brightness in "Flight";
    • 8.5 hours of listening to music.

Fully charging the battery using the standard charger takes 3 hours. Charging and synchronizing the smartphone with a PC is carried out using a micro-USB connector.

Honor 6X operates on a HiSilicon Kirin 655 single-chip system created using 16-nan technology. This chipset consists of 8 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 cores in a pair of clusters: with a frequency of 1.7 GHz and 2.1 GHz. High-quality processing of graphic data is provided by a 2-core GPU Mali-T830 MP2.

Kirin 655 does not please with super-performance. In the AnTuTu benchmark, Huawei Honor 6X with 32 GB of ROM showed an average result, scoring only 56,868 points. In terms of its own capabilities, this platform is an order of magnitude higher than the low-level Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 chipset, but an order of magnitude lower than its main rival of the same level - Qualcomm Snapdragon 625. It’s not worth talking about the most powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 652. In comprehensive testing on the same antitu, Kirin 655 gave 57K points.

Despite the fact that the Kirin 655 is extremely far from top-level platforms, its performance is quite sufficient for solving standard tasks, including current video games that run smoothly. But this smartphone is not suitable for playing “video toys” that require instant reactions due to the “sticky” glass without an oleophobic coating, which is why the finger moves on the glass in jerky movements rather than smoothly. But we have already noted above how this drawback can be eliminated - buy an oleophobic screen protector.

    operating system

The Honor 6X smartphone runs on Android 6.0 OS with the proprietary EMUI 4.1 shell with over-the-air updates. The proprietary interface is very familiar to all fans of Huawei smartphones, everything is standard and there are no innovations. All the usual components for EMUI are in place: an auxiliary pop-up menu, in which you can find a voice recorder, a flashlight, a calculator, is called up by moving from bottom to top, there is also a scale with various short-term marks.

It is possible to change the design themes; you can arrange the control keys on the screen according to your own taste. Support for movements is limited to a single flip of the body, there is a special mode for reducing the desktop for one-handed control, and a virtual key for quickly calling the main functions.

Among the installed programs there is a comprehensive dispatcher, a file manager, and a health monitoring program. The Honor 6X keyboard supports swipe input by default. Switching language layouts, like on other Huawei smartphones, is quite inconvenient: you have to hold down the spacebar and slide your finger to the target. This switching option is very distracting.

    Bottom line

We looked at a rather interesting smartphone that has a fair number of contradictions. The Huawei Honor 6X with 32 GB of gray ROM, which we reviewed, pleased us with its beautiful design, a solid amount of RAM and internal memory, and a fast-working fingerprint scanner.

The disadvantages of this device include the lack of a separate slot for a memory card, the inability to use both SIM cards, and average performance. In general, we can say that the smartphone fully justifies its price of $208, although some experts believe that it is a little overpriced.

    Positioning

The Honor line within Huawei was highlighted as a separate brand in order to counter Chinese manufacturers, who annually offer all the best devices in terms of price/quality ratio. That is, these are devices that should attract a low price in their segment, but at the same time not be budgetary, but provide the set of capabilities and technologies that a consumer in the middle price segment expects. More precisely, this is no longer even the middle price segment, if you look at the cost of the flagships of all companies, but the very beginning of this middle segment. In Russia, these are devices costing just over 15 thousand rubles, that is, the segment is from 15 to 20 thousand rubles.

The Honor 5X model can be considered the first breakthrough in the Honor line; over the past year, the company sold 11 million units in all markets. Some may think that this is not enough, but, for comparison, all Meizu sales amounted to 22 million units, of which only 2 million were in foreign markets. For Huawei, the situation is completely different; Honor 5X sold well in both Europe and the USA.

The Honor 6X is now being promoted to the role of the most popular model in the Honor line, since it is noticeably cheaper than the Honor 8, which was created to compete with flagships. However, in the Honor 6X we see a typical set of characteristics for this price - a fingerprint sensor, a metal body, good battery life and a decent camera. This is one of the most interesting devices in terms of price/quality ratio in this segment, and due to the popularity of the Huawei brand, which is perceived by many as an A-brand, it is a preferred purchase when choosing from Chinese smartphones. In my opinion, Honor 6X can become a potential bestseller in its segment, and during 2017 we will see a gradual change in price, which will also push sales up. The phone has several features, in particular, a dual main camera, which can become an additional reason for buyers to purchase this particular smartphone.

In my opinion, this smartphone is ideal for the mass consumer, who is focused on long-term use of the phone for two to three years, practically does not play “heavy” games, and the scenarios for using the phone are typical.

    Design, dimensions, control elements

Huawei found its own “design” and began to produce devices that are very similar in appearance in batches. Thus, in the appearance of Honor 6X one can easily recognize both the Nova line and older models from Huawei, plus many other models that exist on the market.

The typical layout from Huawei involves placing the fingerprint sensor on the back. If this is your first device with a fingerprint sensor, then you will quickly get used to it. If you already had a phone with a front-facing sensor, then you probably won't like this, since it takes a little longer to press.

The fingerprint sensor has been redesigned compared to the previous year's models, the unlocking speed is 0.3 seconds, which can be considered a good indicator, you will not experience any difficulties with this. Just touch your finger and the switched off screen will come to life and you will see the main menu.

The quality of fingerprint recognition is good, even wet hands are recognized without problems. For most manufacturers, in models from late 2016 to early 2017, this parameter has noticeably improved; the technology has matured. In total, you can register up to 5 fingerprints, which is more than enough.

Huawei has also expanded the capabilities of the fingerprint sensor. You can answer the call by touching the sensor (no finger registration required) and turn off the alarm. You can also swipe your finger over it to open the notification panel, double tap, clear all notifications in the curtain, swipe up to close the panel. When viewing photos in the gallery, you can scroll through them using the sensor, just swipe your finger left or right.

Access to individual applications can be allowed only by recognizing your finger, which is also convenient and provides additional protection. You can also create a “Personal” section in which your files, such as photos, will be encrypted.

The phone body is made of metal, with 2.5D glass on the front surface (the manufacturer is not specified, but it is tempered, Corning Gorilla Glass 3 level). Huawei initially ships the device with a protective film attached; it is of good quality, so film lovers will be satisfied.

The device has three colors - silver, dark gray and gold.

At the same time, the front panel is white, very pleasant to the eye, there is nothing to complain about. Despite the fact that the design of the device is typical and similar to dozens of other models, it looks nice. Look at the photos of Honor 6X and Lenovo K6 Note for comparison; these are the same type of devices with the same price.

You can see that the design is confusingly similar and has become dominant in this price segment.

At the top end there is a 3.5 mm jack, at the bottom end there is a microUSB connector, as well as symmetrical holes for the speakers, although there is only one speaker itself. On the right side there is a paired volume key and an on/off button. On the left side is a SIM card tray (two nanoSIM cards or one card and a memory card).

There are no complaints regarding the assembly of the device, everything is excellent. Phone dimensions – 150.9 x 76.2 x 8.2 mm, weight – 162 grams. It fits very well in the hand due to the rounded back, the ergonomics are excellent. The keys are only on-screen.

    Display

Screen 5.5 inches, LPTS TFT, 1920x1080 pixels, 403 ppi, automatic brightness adjustment, light sensor, additional protective sticker, 2.5D. Some models in this price group have AMOLED screens; they have superior power consumption. The very quality of the display in Honor 6X is excellent if you look at it in isolation from your classmates. For example, on the Lenovo K6 Note the picture remains equally bright at any viewing angle, but on Honor it becomes a little whitish. But this is visible only with direct comparison; in life you cannot notice this. Moreover, this can be considered a trifle and an outright quibble, since, by and large, the screens are of the same class and are quite comparable.

To achieve low screen power consumption, Huawei used a fairly aggressive brightness adjustment scheme. In automatic mode, the screen mainly has a backlight in the range of 20-40%, that is, it turns out that the colors are muted and not very bright. It all depends on your habits, for example, for me it is quite comfortable and does not cause any irritation, someone may think differently. Turning the screen to maximum in manual mode will not work; the maximum display brightness of 450 nits is achieved only in automatic mode and in the sun (the display remains readable and everything is clearly visible).

The screen quality on the Honor 6X is ultimately above average for this segment and there are no shortcomings as such. The aggressive reduction in brightness is not annoying; this is a feature of the device, which you quickly get used to, and working with the screen is comfortable. I repeat once again that those who wish can turn up the brightness manually.

In the screen settings, you can select the color temperature, enable eye protection (yellow background for pictures), select the scale for standard applications and information in them. The sun sharpening mode includes the maximum brightness of the backlight (the same 450 nits); when turned off, the backlight is limited to a level of 370-380 nits.

As you can see, the screen is not only not bad in itself, but it has also been supplemented with a large number of service capabilities that allow you to customize it for yourself.

    Battery

Battery Li-Ion 3340 mAh, stated operating time in mixed mode is about 2 days, music playback is up to 70 hours, in gaming mode – up to 8 hours. During the presentation, they talked a lot about the battery and even cited the iPhone 6 Plus as a comparison, which, of course, lost in operating time to the Honor 6X.

You can treat this data differently, but I can only find fault with one statement: that the phone has fast charging. By this the company means a regular 5V/2A charger, which cannot be considered fast charging. In this way, this device is inferior to its classmates; all have fast charging. The total battery charging time is 2 hours 40 minutes.

Now about the operating time. The stated video viewing time is 11.5 hours. Running our standard test with MX Player and HD video at maximum brightness, I only got 6.5 hours of device life. Which was surprising.

Subsequently, leaving the automatic brightness adjustment (it turned out to be approximately 40%), I got about 9.5 hours of video playback. The screen and its type are the weak point for the power consumption of this device: the higher the brightness of the display, the faster the battery drains. In other devices this dependence is also present, but here it is more pronounced.

In everyday life, I used automatic screen brightness (40%), it was comfortable for me. With fifteen minutes of calls per day, LTE data transmission turned on and viewing social networks, video (at least 15 minutes per day), the device worked for a little over two days. That is, even with the heaviest load (games and videos don’t count), it will easily last a full daylight hours. In my usage scenario, the screen worked for about 5 hours over two days.

Compared to Honor 5X, the progress is very noticeable, the operating time has approximately doubled, while the battery capacity has increased by only 10%. In many ways, the changes are related to the settings of Kirin’s own processor, which made it possible to achieve these changes. So expect one to two days of guaranteed use from this machine, depending on your usage profile. In games, the result was about 6.5 hours with average backlight, but it all depends on the game itself and the load on the processor. In my opinion, the results obtained are very good for the current market.

Among the minor errors, I note that someone made a mistake in estimating the operating time of the dimension, so at 2% the battery predicts approximately 30 minutes of operation, in fact it is 1-2 minutes, an inscription appears that the phone will turn off in 30 seconds, and it turns off.

    Processor, memory, test results

I would like to immediately make a reservation that I have a model with 4 GB of RAM, while in Russia it is sold with 3 GB and 32 GB of internal memory. This means that the performance of the Russian phone is slightly less, but it differs significantly.

So, the Russian device (model code BLN-L21) has 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal memory, memory cards up to 128 GB. HiSilicon Kirin 655 chipset, 8 cores (4 x 2.1 GHz + 4 x 1.7 GHz), Mali-T830 graphics coprocessor. Many are distrustful of HiSilicon’s developments, simply not knowing them and not having encountered them in practice. There are no special features compared to more well-known chipsets, and there is no feeling that you are missing out on something or are suffering from something.

In synthetic tests, the device shows the following performance.

    Communication capabilities

Let's start with the fact that Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n only works in one 2.4 GHz band, which is typical for this price segment. By analogy with devices from Samsung, there is a Wi-Fi Bridge function, when you connect via Wi-Fi to some network, and then, in modem mode, distribute this connection to other devices, the maximum number of devices is four.

There is NFC, which is not bad, Bluetooth version 4.1 (no ANT+ support). USB 2.0 version, microUSB connector, since buyers in this price group do not need USB Type C.

With LTE frequencies everything is typical (Band 1, 3, 7, 8, 20), there is no frequency aggregation, which is also expected, category 4 and a maximum download speed of up to 150 Mbit. For most buyers, this does not play a fundamental role, unless you constantly download large files over the mobile network. In the USA, on the AT&T network, I was faced with the fact that the device simply refused to work in Los Angeles, the network was not found, in Las Vegas it worked in 3G mode. This is worth keeping in mind if you are traveling to the US and intend to use the phone there. Just like when buying a device from other markets, remember that, most likely, the set of LTE frequencies will not be suitable for Russia, you will get a headache.

There are no complaints about the GPS operation, a cold start takes about thirty seconds, and since A-GPS is constantly used, everything is completely instant. The navigation quality is excellent.

    Camera

The front camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels, the quality is typical for selfie cameras, there is nothing to criticize or praise it for.

The main camera is dual and consists of a 12 megapixel and 2 megapixel module. The main module is Sony IMX386, it has phase detection autofocus, focusing speed is 0.3 seconds. By using two cameras, you can blur the background and then focus on objects (works when objects are close together). This is a separate shooting mode that must be activated in the camera menu. Below you can see how this works with examples. The aperture in this case changes from F/0.95 to F/16.

The camera interface is very simple, there is a professional mode in which you can adjust the white balance, shutter speed and other parameters, plus ready-made shooting modes, for example, for photographing food. The camera's service capabilities are interesting: shooting from a locked state using the side volume key (press twice), autofocus on a moving object and other settings.

I liked the capabilities of the camera, as well as the way it takes photographs. This is a very good camera in its class, which definitely outperforms its classmates. However, evaluate the pictures yourself.

    Working with two SIM cards

The smartphone has one radio module and two slots for nanoSIM SIM cards. In the settings, you can set the “default” SIM card separately for calls and separately for mobile Internet, and also assign a name to each SIM card. When sending a text message or before making a call, you can choose which SIM card will be used for the action. In the interface, everything for working with two SIM cards is made simple and clear. One card is always 2G, the second is 2/3/4G.

    Software features and software

The smartphone runs Android 6.1, the proprietary Emotion UI, or, as it is now called, EMUI version 4.1, is used as the shell. In February, the company promises to update version of Android to version seven, and the EMUI version will also be updated. This shell is very reminiscent of MIUI, Flyme and the one that Lenovo uses in its devices; they are ideologically similar. There is no separate application menu; all programs are collected on desktops.

There are several themes available in the settings, you can also download new ones (drop theme installer files into the folder). One of the things I love about Huawei devices is the automatic change of wallpaper on the lock screen; these are always new, colorful photographs.

Advantages: Excellent IPS matrix without an air gap with excellent viewing angles and the ability to choose a shade; High backlight brightness; Excellent loud ringing without rattling; An excellent conversational speaker with a low volume level (despite the thin body, no one else will hear the conversation in the room), a good maximum volume level; Good battery life (6 hours of screen time on a 3G network, on average the charge lasts for 2 days); Picks up 4G where other LTE devices puff on 3G; A good camera with a Sony IMX386 matrix, excellent light and color rendition, fast autofocus, a rich night mode in which you can get bright and saturated images without noise, and thanks to the second camera you can get the effect of depth of field (at first it delights and pleases, it will be something to fill Instagram with) ); Record video with excellent separate stereo sound; Voice recorder recording in stereo; Bright flash; Excellent front camera with various effects and 1080P/30FPS video recording; A quick fingerprint with additional features: swipe on the scanner to open the curtain, answer a call, scroll through photos in the gallery. LED notification signal in various colors: green, yellow, red, white, blue, cyan; Scratch-resistant screen (in six months of using the phone without films, one scratch was due to the fact that the phone was pressed with keys); Availability of OTG (feel free to connect flash drives); Stylish interface with many settings and the ability to install deeply changing interface (the lower curtain that slides out on the lock screen with voice recorder and flashlight buttons is absolutely a miracle); Functional gallery with photos displayed on the map; Expanded functionality in case and pocket; Smooth auto brightness; Fast GPS with GLONASS; High performance and multitasking, does not heat up in games; Minimum software clutter, many built-in useful applications; Regular updates, upgrade to Android 7; Operational Russian support. Disadvantages: High level of blue radiation from the screen (no matter what shade of the screen you choose, it will turn blue); Bright screen backlight at minimum brightness (despite the night mode, your eyes will still get tired and hurt); Outside, at temperatures below 0, blue “traces” are visible on the screen when scrolling; High SAR level (even though the phone reliably picks up 4G and strives to switch to a better network, it may suddenly lose connection out of the blue, probably a software problem); frequently scans the network, which is why the network module consumes a lot of battery; Low camera sharpness: the grass in the pictures is “soapy”, no edges on objects are visible, the pictures look like watercolors (however, even the iPhone 7 Plus suffers from this); Dead HDR (no difference from a regular photo); Slow motion mode 120 frames per second for show - all this is filmed in 640x480 resolution and looks terrible in 2017; The EMUI interface is the most serious drawback. The interface is so overhauled that it is very difficult to use after pure Android, and it would be okay if the changes were cosmetic, but no: traffic accounting only for the last month; in the call interface it is immediately impossible to see what time the call was made the day before yesterday, and there is confusing information about the duration of the call under each call. Lock screen without the ability to install widgets, third-party players will not have controls from the lock screen; a confusing and illogical hierarchy of settings, everything necessary is generally shoved into one section. Lots of related bugs. Wi-Fi Direct only works with Huawei devices; Neutered Google Smart Lock; The screen brightness sensor is so sensitive that on the street at night, when passing under a 15-meter lamp, the brightness is turned up to maximum, but as soon as you pass the lamp, it drops; Delayed auto-brightness sensor: when they call and the phone is in your pocket, when you take it out, you can’t immediately see who is calling (due to the smoothness of auto-brightness); Mute sound output via AUX; SIM section combined with a memory card. Comment: However, despite the many shortcomings that, in principle, stem from the EMUI interface, which, by the way, also has many strong advantages, this is, first of all, an excellent smartphone for its price: a gyroscope, compass, NFC, excellent communication and a good camera with guarantee - a reasonable choice without an alternative. The phone will constantly please you, as well as disappoint you in some ways, but the disappointments will be one-time in nature and insignificant in comparison with such strong advantages. In the review, I deliberately did not write about the design, the presence of a fingerprint sensor on the back, the camera in the center, etc., because this is all purely evaluative and subjective, and when buying a phone you can immediately familiarize yourself with the design. ;)
