Creating a character for VK stickers

AHA-HA-HA! This is one of the crazy goals, but who knows. In any case, I want to make a set of stickers for myself with my favorite character and send it through a script that simulates sticker pictures. You can try your luck and try to sell this character - who knows?

Actually, a little about the character

Touching, open, kind and insidious... Onion Onion!)))

About drawing tools and drawing structure

I will use Paint Tool SAI in my work; I like this simple and at the same time powerful graphic editor. Plus - there is also vector editor, which I will also use in my work. The character's color is two colors (dark and lighter in tone). An example of the implementation of the work - a picture of the goal :)

The size of one picture is 512 x 512 pixels.

    Work plan

    1. Analyze stickers on VK, determine direction, style, select groups of “emotions” that stickers reflect
    2. In parallel with point 1, select various pictures with emotions. Suitable for both anime/manga and American comic book format. Emotions for various character traits and emotional situations are important
    3. Together with point 2: find popular harmless memes, try to fit them into emotions. Meme = emotion
    4. Distribute the received emotions into 10 groups of 4 pieces in each category (1 group = 1 emotion, which spread over 4 stickers)
    5. Make raster sketches of each emotion
    6. Work on the sticker “until it’s perfect”
    7. Show the sets to your friends and here, on smartprogress, listen to criticism and evaluate the reaction of those around you
    8. Test stickers on VK (send pictures and see how it will look)
    9. Convert set to vector graphics using Paint Tool SAI

That's it, finish. After these events, send them to VK for trial, and in case of failure, don’t even be upset, on the contrary, use them yourself as stickers :)

    Goal Accomplishment Criteria

I learned how to make such characters - invaluable information for the future, and also tried my luck with a character for VK stickers

In this tutorial I will show you how to draw stickers step by step in Adobe Illustrator. Our main character will be a cute pug. In total we will create 10 stickers with different situations. The tutorial is designed for beginners, so you don't have to be a professional illustrator to complete it.

If you need some inspiration, I encourage you to visit the GraphicRiver website where you will find large number pictures with pugs that may be useful in your work. Let's begin!

    Drawing a pug's head

    Step 1

Create a new document File – New(File - New) size 850 x 850 pixels. Let's take it Ellipse Tool(L) (Oval) and draw an almost round oval of light brown color. Next we apply the effect Effect – Warp – Inflate(Effect – Deformation – Bloating). We configure it as shown below.

    Step 2

For the eyes, draw a brown oval using Ellipse Tool(L) (Oval). Then add a darker circle inside the oval. While creating the shape, hold down the Shift key to get a perfect circle. This will be the pupil of the eye. After that, draw a highlight in the form of a small white dot. When finished, place the finished eye on the left side of the head.

To create a second eye, select the first one and activate Reflect Tool(O) ( Mirror image). Then, holding down the Alt key, click in the forehead area to get a mirrored copy of the eye. Having copied the eye, move the copy of the highlight to the left.

    Step 3

Now let's draw the muzzle. Using Ellipse Tool(L) (Oval) draw a brown oval. Select it and go Effect – Warp – Inflate(Effect – Deformation – Bloat), in the window that appears, enter the settings as shown below.

Now apply to the muzzle Object – Expand Appearance(Object – Expand Design) and rotate it counterclockwise by about 30-40 degrees. After that, select the oval and right-click on it. In the menu that appears, select Transform – Reflect(Transform – Mirror) and in the window that appears Axis(Axis) set to Vertical(Vertical), Angle(At an angle) - 90 degrees and press the button Copy(Copy). Move the copy to the right and get the base of the muzzle.

Select both copies of the oval and group them by right-clicking on them and selecting Group(Group). Select the face and duplicate it (Ctrl+C, then Ctrl+B). Using the arrow keys on your keyboard, move the duplicate down slightly and change the color to dark brown to create a shadow.

    Step 4

To finish creating the muzzle, add another oval underneath it.

Then we draw the nose. First, create a small rounded rectangle and place it at the top of the face. After this, draw a small circle at the bottom of the rectangle.

Place the muzzle on the pug's head.

    Step 5

For the ears, draw another brown oval. Then we activate Direct Selection Tool(A) (Partial selection) and move the anchor points to deform the oval and get a shape as shown below.

    Step 6

Place the ear on the left side of the head. To create a second ear, use the tool Reflect Tool(O) (Mirror reflection). Make sure to hold down the Alt button while duplicating. Now click on the pug’s forehead (in the dialog box that opens, select Vertical(Vertical), Angle(At an angle) 90 degrees and press Copy(Copy)). Our pug's head is ready!

Drawing the body of a pug

    Step 1

Now let's draw the body. Using Ellipse Tool(L) (Oval), create an oval. Then we transform it. To do this we use the effect Effect – Warp – Fish(Effect – Deformation – Fish) and enter the parameters as shown below. After this we apply to the figure Object – Expand Appearance

We continue to transform the figure and apply Effect – Warp – Inflate(Effect – Deformation – Bloating). Enter the parameters as shown below. And finally apply it to the figure again Object – Expand Appearance(Object – Expand Appearance).

    Step 2

Insert the body under the head (Ctrl+X, then Ctrl+B). Let's add some volume. Copy the head and paste it under the original (Ctrl+C, then Ctrl+B). Move the copy slightly diagonally to the right and change its color to a darker shade.

Select the body, copy it and paste it under the original (Ctrl+C, then Ctrl+B). Move it diagonally.

    Step 3

To draw the legs, we start with an oval again. Draw a large vertical light brown oval. Take the tool Direct Selection Tool(A) (Partial selection) and move the anchor points to create a shape similar to the second image in the screenshot.

Then at the bottom of the previous shape we add a small horizontal oval. Select the left and right anchor points of the new oval and use Direct Selection Tool(A) (Partial selection) and move them down using the down arrow key on your keyboard.

Now let's draw the fingers. Copy the small oval (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+B), change the color to a darker one and move it slightly to the left. Now we have one finger ready, which consists of two figures - dark and light.

Copy both shapes (light and dark), move it to the background and move it to the right. For the last finger, duplicate only the light brown shape and move it to the left.

As a result, you should have a paw as shown in the picture below.

    Step 4

We transfer this paw to the pug. Clamping Shift keys and Alt, pull the paw to the left. By holding down the Alt key, we duplicated the first paw and, using the Shift key, moved it clearly horizontally. Next, place a copy under the body (Ctrl+X, Ctrl+B).

Duplicate the paw again and move it to the right, do not forget to hold down the Shift and Alt keys. Now we have a third paw.

Select the very first leg, hold down Shift and Alt and move it to the right. This will be the fourth paw.

After this we need to add a shadow on the fourth paw. We copy it and move it under the original. Then change the color to a darker shade and move it a little to the left.

    Step 5

To draw the tail we will use Spiral Tool(Spiral). If you do not find this instrument in your program, hold down the mouse button on the instrument Line Segment Tool(\) (Line segment) and the result will appear additional menu, in which we select Spiral Tool(Spiral).

Left-click on the work canvas. As a result, a new window will appear in which you need to select values for Radius(Radius), Decay(Growth) and Segments(Number of segments). Try playing with the settings and select suitable option. In addition, on the panel Stroke(Stroke) can be changed Weight(Thickness) of the stroke. We also remove the fill color, and for the stroke we select the same color with which we filled the dog’s body. Also on the panel Stroke(Stroke) set Cap(Ends) on Round Cap(Rounded ends).

Next, we adjust the thickness of the ends of the spiral. For this we take Width Tool(Shift+W) (Width) and move the guides of the anchor point to make one end of the line thicker and the other thinner. Having finished, apply Object - Expand(Object – Disassemble).

Add a tail and get the first pug ready for further transformations.

Draw a pug on a pillow

    Step 1

    Duplicate the entire pug.

Now we will teach the dog the “lie down” command. To do this, turn the front paws to the left and the hind paws to the right. In this position, only three paws will be visible, so we remove the back right one.

    Step 2

To create a pillow, draw an oval. Then we take Convert Anchor Point Tool(Shift+C) (Anchor Point) and click on the side anchor points to create sharp corners.

    Step 3

After that, in the top panel, remove the fill color, and select dark orange for the stroke. Also on the panel Stroke(Stroke) select Round Cap(Rounded ends). Then using Arc Tool(Arc), draw an arc. By using Direct Selection Tool(A) (Partial selection) Move the ends of the arc as shown below to create a seam on the pillow. Now the pug has a place to rest!

We transfer the dog to the pillow and the second sticker is ready!

Draw a pug with a flower wreath

    Step 1

    Let's copy the first pug.

We turn the dog’s body and lower the tail to “teach” him the “sit” command. Then we slightly expand the hind legs.

    Step 2

Next we will draw the flowers. Create two pink circles: one darker and the second lighter (for this we use the tool Ellipse Tool(L) (Oval), also while creating the shape, hold down the Shift key to get a perfect circle). The dark circle should be under the light one.

Select both circles and group them (Ctrl+G). Next, copy the group (to do this, select it, hold down the Alt key and drag the group with the mouse) and rotate it to the right so that it overlaps the original. Now we have two petals.

We repeat the steps as many times as you want to get petals on the flower. Having finished with the first layer, group it.

Duplicate the group (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+B) and increase it. Now we have a second layer of petals. We create the second layer in the same way: copy it, scale it up and rotate it a little.

Having finished with the petals, add a group of white dots in the center. For convenience, we group the finished flower (Ctrl+G).

Duplicate the flower twice and make both copies slightly smaller. Place flowers on the pug's head. Voila! The third sticker with a pug is ready.

Draw a pug with a crown

    Step 1

Let's start by drawing the crown. Activate Rectangle Tool(M) (Rectangle) and create a yellow rectangle. After that, in the upper part we draw two ovals overlapping the rectangle. The color of the ovals does not matter. The main thing is to make sure that they overlap the rectangle as shown below. Select all three shapes and in the panel Window - Pathfinder Minus Front(Minus the top one). As a result, we will cut off part of the rectangle to the shape of the ovals.

Select the resulting figure and go Effect – Warp – Bulge(Effect – Deformation – Bulge). In the window that appears, configure the effect.

Applying another effect for the crown Effect – Warp – Arc Lower(Effect – Warp – Arc Down) with settings as shown below. At the end, don’t forget to apply to the figure Expand Appearance(Disassemble the design). The crown is ready!

    Step 2

Copying the head of a pug.

Place the crown on the copy of the head and the fourth sticker is ready.

Draw a pug with a bandage

    Step 1

First let's draw a heart. Create a red oval and rotate it slightly counterclockwise. Copy the ellipse, activate Reflect Tool(O) (Mirror) and holding Alt key click in the center of the oval. In the window that opens, select Vertical(Vertical), Angle(At an angle) 90 degrees and press the button Copy(Copy).

After copying and mirroring the duplicate oval, place it as shown below. Select both ovals and in the panel Window - Pathfinder(Window – Pathfinder) click on the button Unite(Merge). After this, using Rectangle Tool(M) (Rectangle) draw the stalk.

    Step 2

Copying a sitting pug. Under the head, draw an oval and move it to the background (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+B), then move the shape up a little and change the color to red. Next, place the heart with the handle on the headband and copy it vertically. The fifth sticker is ready.

Draw a pug chef with a croissant

    Step 1

To create a chef's hat, draw a rectangle. Please note that the black outline is only included to make the design easier to see. Make sure you have it disabled.

Applying the effect to the rectangle Effect – Warp – Bulge(Effect – Deformation – Bulge). In the window that appears, enter the parameters as shown below and apply Expand Appearance(Disassemble the design).

Add three circles at the top of the rectangle, and a white oval at the bottom. Select all the shapes and combine them by clicking on the button Unite(Merge) in the panel Pathfinder(Contour processing). The cap is ready!

Place it on the pug's head.

    Step 2

We start drawing a croissant by creating a light brown rectangle. To do this we use the tool Rectangle Tool(M) (Rectangle). Using the effect Effect – Warp – Bulge(Effect – Deformation – Bulge) slightly deform the figure. In the settings window, enter the required values and then apply Expand Appearance(Disassemble the design).

Next, apply another effect to the figure. Effect – Warp – Arc Lower(Effect – Warp – Arc Down) with settings as in the screenshot below. Then we apply Object – Expand Appearance(Object – Expand Appearance). Copy the resulting shape and move it to the background (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+B). We slightly expand it on the sides and change the color to a darker shade.

    Step 3

Repeat the steps from the previous step and apply the effect Effect – Warp – Bulge Vertical(Vertical) Bend(Bend) 40% and click OK).

    Then we move on Effect – Warp – Arc(Effect – Deformation – Arc) (select horizontal(Horizontal) Bend(Bend) -20%, Distortion Vertical(Distortion – Vertical) 8% and click OK).

After this we apply Effect – Warp – Arc Lower(Effect – Deformation – Arc down) (select horizontal(Horizontal) Bend(Bending) 10% and click OK).

To create a shadow, duplicate the shape, change its color to a darker one and slightly expand it on the sides.

    Step 4

For the last part of the croissant, draw an oval and apply deformation to it. Let's move on Effect – Warp – Arc(Effect – Deformation – Arc) and enter the required values. After this we apply Expand Appearance(Disassemble the design).

We assemble all the parts of the croissant together as shown below.

Place the finished croissant near the pug and the sixth sticker is ready.

    Step 1

Let's start by drawing the paw. Create an oval and use Direct Selection Tool(A) (Partial selection) move the side anchor points down. Copy the shape, move it to the background, slightly move it up and change the color to dark to get a shadow.

Copy the very first oval and place it on top of the original (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F). Change the copy color to dark (using Eyedropper Tool(I) (Edropper) take the same shade that we used for the shadow) and compress it horizontally (for this we use Selection Tool(V) (Emphasis)). Without removing the selection from this shape, copy it to the front (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F), slightly compress it horizontally and make it lighter (for this we use again Eyedropper Tool(I) (Pipette)).

    Step 2

Place the paw under the pug's head, which we previously copied. Create a duplicate paw: hold down the Alt and Shift keys and drag the paw to the right. As a result, we have a copy of the paw, aligned horizontally.

    Step 3

Let's draw a cup. Create a coral rectangle. Then we move on Effect – Warp – Fish(Effect – Deformation – Fish) (set Bend(Bend) by -10% and click OK). After this we apply Effect – Warp – Arc(Effect – Deformation – Arc) (set Bend(Bend) by -20%, Vertical Distortion(Distortion – Vertical) – by -20% and click OK). For the handle, draw a circle without fill and with a wide stroke (for stroke, set the parameter Weight(Thickness) per panel Stroke(Stroke)).

    Step 4

We place the head with paws on top of the cup. The seventh sticker is ready!

    Drawing a gentleman pug

    Step 1

We start by drawing the hat. Create a dark gray circle. By using Direct Selection Tool(A) (Partial Selection) Select the bottom anchor point and move it up. After this, we create an oval of the same color at the bottom. The hat is ready!

Place the hat on the pug's head.

    Step 2

Of course, no gentleman is complete without a monocle. Above the eye, draw a circle without fill and with a dark gray stroke. Then we add two very narrow rectangles: short horizontally and long vertically.

    Step 3

In addition to a monocle, a real gentleman should have a bow tie. Draw a dark gray rectangle (use the same color as for the hat). Then we apply Effect – Warp – Bulge(Effect – Deformation – Bulge) (select horizontal(Horizontal) Bend(Bending) -20% and click OK).

Apply again Effect – Warp – Bulge(Effect – Deformation – Bulge) (select Vertical(Vertical) and install Bend(Bend) by 30%). And, as usual, don’t forget to apply to the figure Expand Appearance(Disassemble the design).

    Step 4

For the central part of the tie, draw a small rectangle and apply the effect to it Effect – Warp – Inflate(Effect – Deformation – Bloat) (set Bend(Bend) by 30% and click OK). We place this figure in the center of the previous one in the foreground. For ease of positioning, you can use View – Smart Guides(View – Smart Guides) (Ctrl+U).

Copy the central shape and move it to the background (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+B), then slightly expand it horizontally and change the color to dark.

We put all the details together and get the eighth sticker!

We create the pattern on the cap in the same way as we did for the horn. First, draw a white rectangle and rotate it diagonally. Then, holding down the Alt key, move the shape down and to the right.

Now press Ctrl+D to create several copies of the rectangle with the same distance between them. After that, group the rectangles (Ctrl+G).

Copy the triangle to the front (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F), cut the copy (Ctrl+X) and move it to the top (Ctrl+F). Without deselecting the triangle, select the rectangles. On the panel Pathfinder(Contour processing) click on the button Crop(Cutting). The cap is ready!

    Step 3

Copy the sitting pug and place the cap on his head. Using a tool Star Tool(Star) add some stars. The tenth sticker is ready!

The final touch: draw a blue circle and move it to the background (Ctrl+X, Ctrl+B), placing a copy of the shape under each pug as a contrasting background. Ready!

    We're done!
