A year ago, dual-sim smartphones accounted for a quarter of the smartphones presented in Ukraine (according to the database on qp.ua). By the middle of 2013, their number almost approached half, and in terms of equipment, the oldest models with support for two SIM cards are already a stone's throw from the top segment. However, the largest number of offers can still be found in the medium-low price segment. Here, mainly second-tier brands actively tried, which flooded the UAH 1500-2500 segment with interesting, but rapidly replacing each other models, and of the A-brands, only Sony does not show much interest in supporting two SIM cards. LG offers its L-series smartphones already in two versions, which differ from each other not only in the number of SIM slots, but also in the shape of the case. At the end of last year, HTC released Desire SV, an interesting, but so far the only dual-sim model that managed to drop in price to the price category we are interested in. Samsung presented three models (and all duos) in the above-mentioned segment in 2013, which more than frankly hints at demand. These are Galaxy Ace 3 with a screen diagonal of 4 inches (review) and Galaxy Win (review) with a 4.7-inch display and Galaxy Core. Something in between in terms of size (4.3-inch display), price and equipment. It is about him that will be discussed in this review.

Specifications

Like the Samsung Galaxy Win, the Galaxy Core runs Android 4.1.2 out of the box. The model was introduced a little earlier than the younger Galaxy Ace 3, which is probably why it received an earlier version of the operating system. Let's hope that the update is not far off, although there is no big grief in Android 4.1, the difference between both versions is small, but the updated TouchWiz for Jelly Bean 4.2.2 turned out to be even more convenient, and some of its functions are no longer enough when returning to the old version. For user data, the smartphone has 8 GB of internal memory, which is atypically good for an inexpensive device. The heart of the smartphone is a dual-core 1.2 GHz Qualcomm MSM8225 Snapdragon S4 processor, and the graphics here are Adreno 203. For its price category and for a 4.3-inch display with a resolution of 480x800 pixels, this solution looks normal and predictable. By the way, according to the above characteristics, the smartphone is identical to its closest competitors LG Optimus L7 II Dual and HTC Desire SV (although the latter costs a little more than both).

Appearance

Surprises from Samsung designers can not be expected. In the smartphone, the features of the manufacturer are clearly guessed. The case is not compact for its size, but in the hand lies well. Still, today a 4.3-inch display is no longer commonly called large. In addition, Samsung was one of the first manufacturers of large-screen smartphones to realize that the lock screen button on the right would be more convenient than on the top.

The only surprise for me was the color of the case plastic. We had a blue Core on the test. It looks fresh, interesting and much cooler than faceless Chinese Fly or glossy and lurid Prestigio smartphones due to this - that is, smartphones that are in the same price category as Core and also support two SIM cards. I think this is the first time in my history gg, when I write down the design of the case of a Samsung smartphone in the pluses of the model. The only thing that upsets is the tendency of both the case and the screen of the smartphone to collect fingerprints. Well, in terms of the nobility of materials, the case is still inferior to HTC, but this eternal theme of plastic vs everything else is already boring to raise once again. It is noteworthy that the use of micro SIM cards has already reached the middle segment of Samsung smartphones. In Galaxy Core, both slots are designed specifically for this format.

Screen

I have a dual relationship with the Galaxy Core screen. By today's standards, it is considered grainy - but the flagship Samsung device of 2012, Galaxy S II, had exactly the same screen: 4.3-inch, with a resolution of 480x800 pixels, 217 ppi. Unless the technology was different - for flagship smartphones, Samsung uses Super AMOLED displays, for simple models - TFT. This display looks good even against the background of IPS displays in Chinese smartphones in the same price category, if you do not take into account the fact that they usually have a higher resolution. In bright sunlight, the Galaxy Core display feels good and remains readable. For clarity, I provide photographic evidence. Pictured below is a Samsung Galaxy Gore, Galaxy S4, and Galaxy S4 Mini on a fine summer day in direct sunlight.

Although, by the way, measurements with our colorimeter showed not the best result: 330.37 cd / m 2 - this is a confident "average".

For other indicators (color temperature, color gamut, color accuracy) - the same parsley. The smartphone does not shine, but it demonstrates quite a typical and decent result for the screen of an inexpensive smartphone. The "Chinese" is both better and worse, just not at once. In the older Samsung models with a TFT screen, there were even better indicators. Unfortunately, LG Optimus L7 II Dual and HTC Desire SV were in our editorial office even before the colorimeter appeared in it, so I cannot compare with them.

Performance

On the performance of the smartphone, we can say that it is approximately on par with competitors. Both with the LG Optimus L7 II Dual and the HTC Desire SV the difference is small (in favor of Samsung) due to a slightly smaller amount of RAM (768 MB per brother) and a processor clock speed reduced to 1 GHz. And with those "Chinese" with a price tag of about 2000 UAH, in the heart of which the Mediatek MT6577 dual-core processor beats, and the amount of RAM, depending on the display resolution, is 512 MB or 1 GB. Fly has recently had about five such models, and other competitors (Prestigio and Highscreen, a Russian brand) are not far behind. The performance test results can be seen below.

If we talk about live impressions, then for a person who has this first smartphone or who has had other relatively inexpensive devices released a year or two ago, the performance of the Galaxy Core will not seem insufficient. Of course, after using flagship devices, the slower operation of the Galaxy Core interface is striking. But by and large, everything is quite at the level of the price category, and already a big step forward compared to last year's models. HD video on the smartphone is played, not the most demanding toys go.

Competitors and neighbors in the line

Now to the question of why in the review I constantly compare the Galaxy Core, an A-brand smartphone, with the "Chinese". The fact is that with the majority of successful models, at least Fly, and at most Prestigio, it is included in the same price category. Where potential buyers are still price sensitive, sometimes more sensitive than brand.

That's why the competitors of this model are exactly divided into two camps - these are two representatives of the A-brand - LG Optimus L7 II Dual and HTC Desire SV. Although HTC is close in price to the Galaxy Win - an older model. In essence, it is close to Core and L7 II Dual. The same diagonal of the display, approximately the same "stuffing", but a weaker battery and "antediluvian" Android 4.0. But many potential buyers will like the more noble body of the device, and some will prefer the Sense TouchWiz interface. In addition, LG and HTC smartphones have an 8-megapixel camera, while Samsung equipped its model with a 5-megapixel one, which is quite slow. And a 2460 mAh battery paired with a lower processor frequency in the LG Optimus L7 II Dual smartphone can gain a few extra hours of battery life - this indicator, in my opinion, for the owner of an Android smartphone should be more important than the camera resolution on a non-top smartphone, which any hands will be average.

The second camp is smartphones from second-tier manufacturers. Here, for the same money, fans of large diagonals can get a real “shovel” Fly IQ451 Vista with a 5-inch HD display and a quad-core processor that demonstrates a different level of performance. Or a 4.5-inch more pleasant, in my opinion, Fly IQ446 Magic, also equipped with a quad-core processor. In addition to them, of course, there are other models, but they are already less interesting and, in fact, bypass the Galaxy Core, primarily in terms of diagonal and display resolution. But in this case, I wouldn’t take the camera into account at all, it’s rare that a “Chinese” is ready to boast of a good result in this field (the exception is Huawei Honor 2 and Highscreen Explosion, perhaps). But it should be borne in mind that in real life, the audiences of inexpensive Chinese smartphones and smartphones produced by A-brands do not always intersect - the issue of trust in the brand, habit and status of the manufacturer for some is sharper than megapixels, gigahertz and inches.

The closest relative of the Galaxy Core - Galaxy Ace 3 - differs from it with a more recent version of the OS out of the box (Android 4.2), but with a very small display - 4 inches. For those who are afraid of medium and large diagonals, but are looking for a fresh and inexpensive dual-sim smartphone, it will be an excellent choice. Galaxy Win is a branded alternative to the "Chinese", from which it differs for the worse primarily in the low resolution of the display - the same 480x800 pixels, but already on a 4.7-inch diagonal. In general, quite an adequate smartphone for its price (about 2500 UAH).

However, we will have to pay for this by the inability to read the text in bright sunlight. The picture fades very noticeably. By the way, there is no light sensor, which means that you will have to manually adjust the brightness level. The screen resolution is 480 by 800 pixels. After some time of use, the sensor will begin to behave inappropriately and live its own life. When one drop of water hits, the device starts randomly opening and closing applications, dialing numbers and writing messages.

Hardware platform and performance

Samsung G355H Galaxy Core 2 Duos, the characteristics of which quickly appeared in all specialized editions, is equipped with a quad-core processor with a clock speed of 1.2 GHz and 768 megabytes of RAM.
