    Delivery and configuration

    DOOGEE X5 MAX Pro comes in a relatively small black cardboard box, which is characterized by a discreet appearance and good information content.

    Inside is the minimum required kit to get started with a smartphone: charger, USB cable and user documentation.

    Appearance, arrangement of elements

    We are already accustomed to the fact that budget smartphones do not excite our imagination with their original design or construction materials. All this also applies to DOOGEE X5 MAX Pro - a “chubby brick”, embellished with a thin silver edging, which is designed to visually slightly hide its considerable thickness. Looks quite nice. The body is collapsible, plastic, internally reinforced with an aluminum chassis. The front is tempered glass. The removable back cover is matte, non-slip and feels like a soft touch, although it is not one. There are two color options available on the market - black and white.

    In general, the dimensions (143 x 73.2 mm) are within its diagonal, and the increased thickness and weight (10.8 mm and 195 g) are caused by a rather capacious battery. Nevertheless, it is quite comfortable to work with the device even with one hand, including thanks to the good location of the controls.

    The front panel is made in a laconic style - without inscriptions or logos. There are a number of standard elements here: a speaker, a proximity and light sensor, a front camera, a standard set of touch buttons (unfortunately, without backlight) and a microphone. The frames around the display are large: 5.75 mm on the sides, 15 mm on the top, 17 mm on the bottom. The edging rises slightly above the glass.

    Despite the two grilles on the lower side, there is only one speaker, and it is located on the right. At the top are micro-USB and 3.5mm audio ports. The left side is empty, and on the right you can see the volume rocker and the power key. The buttons fit neatly under the thumb of the right hand or the index finger of the left. Their pressing is quite tight, and the operation is quiet.

    At the back of DOOGEE X5 MAX Pro there is a main camera module with flash, a fingerprint scanner and the manufacturer’s logo.

    Yes, yes, you didn’t think so, a model costing less than $100 received a fingerprint sensor - a rare occurrence even for much more expensive solutions. And I must say that it works perfectly - quickly and accurately. Moreover, its functionality is not limited to simply unlocking the smartphone. With it, you can scroll through photos in the gallery, pause music and videos, and even take pictures. Additionally, you can protect access to any application with your fingerprint.

    A special protrusion is provided for removing the back cover. After its dismantling, access to a replaceable battery, slots for two SIM cards in Micro-SIM and Nano-SIM formats, as well as for a microSD memory card is opened.

    The build quality of the DOOGEE X5 MAX Pro is good. Perhaps the only criticism concerns the slightly rotated bezel of the fingerprint scanner. The rigidity of the case is excellent: it is not susceptible to external influences, and there are no extraneous sounds.

    Display

    DOOGEE X5 MAX Pro uses a 5-inch IPS touch display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 and a pixel density of 293 PPI. The matrix is covered with protective glass (the brand of which the manufacturer does not disclose). There is an air gap between them, which slightly impairs readability in the sun, but makes repairs cheaper: if damaged, only the glass can be replaced, and not the entire display unit. For additional protection, a factory film with an oleophobic layer is applied.

    In general, subjective impressions of the display are quite positive: pleasant color rendering, albeit with a noticeable deviation towards cooler shades, as well as good contrast. The resolution is sufficient to produce detailed images, including smooth fonts. Viewing angles are very wide - without characteristic distortions when viewed diagonally. The brightness can be adjusted manually, or you can use automatic control. The adjustment range is sufficient for comfortable work on a sunny day or in complete darkness. The automation works averagely - in the sun it may not raise the brightness to maximum.

    Multi-touch technology processes only two simultaneous touches. In most cases it works well, but there are some delays, which is especially noticeable in games.

    There are extensive gesture control capabilities, including “Smart Somatosensory” (scrolling through photos, tracks, desktops, etc. by simply swiping over the proximity sensor), “Gesture Unlock” (unlock/lock with a double tap, call the camera by swiping your finger down, etc. further) and “System Gesture” (turning off the incoming call signal by rotating the screen down, the ability to answer a call simply by shaking the smartphone and automatically turning off the speakerphone when brought to your ear).

    Audio subsystem

    This model is equipped with one multimedia speaker. It provides fairly loud sound and a good frequency range, which lacks detail. To perform basic functions (games, video and speakerphone), its capabilities are more than enough.

    The package does not include a headset, so the sound in the headphones was checked using gaming (impedance 60 Ohms) and in-ear Vivanco HS 200 WT (impedance 16 Ohms). In both cases, the sound is quite standard, without any frills, and the volume reserve is minimal.

    Additionally, there is a radio module for recording and listening to FM radio stations with connected headphones.

    Camera

    DOOGEE X5 MAX Pro is equipped with two cameras: the main one (5-megapixel module with software interpolation up to 8 megapixels, f/2.8 aperture and autofocus) and the front one (5-megapixel module with software interpolation up to 8 megapixels, f/2.8 aperture and fixed focus). The first one can shoot video in 720p resolution, and the second one can shoot video in 480p resolution. The quality of the resulting photos and videos is expectedly mediocre. However, the camera capabilities are enough for simple tasks: to photograph something close and make a video call in good lighting conditions, but you should not count on high detail.

    The main camera settings menu is quite simple and familiar to Android OS users. There are a considerable number of settings and modes.

    User Interface

    The DOOGEE X5 MAX Pro smartphone runs on the still current Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS, which is presented in a slightly modified form. As a result, we have redrawn icons, a vertically scrolling application menu, and a modified quick settings curtain.

    There are not many pre-installed programs (“Flashlight”, “Bagan Keyboard”, “Documents To Go” and “DG Xender”), but they all have a set of useful functions that are useful for everyday use. We’ll highlight “Parallel Space” separately, which allows you to log into one application under different accounts (maximum two profiles per application).

    The main settings menu received a black background, while all other submenus remained white, which, given such contrast, is very hard on the eyes. Access to almost all parameters is open: communication capabilities, appearance, screen settings, sound effects, gesture controls, etc. By the way, some items did not receive translation. An interesting feature to note is the “Download in Turbo mode” function, the essence of which is to simultaneously use the mobile Internet and Wi-Fi to speed up file downloading.

    Overall, the system works well - quickly and smoothly, without any major complaints.

    Productivity and communication capabilities

    DOOGEE X5 MAX Pro is built on the MediaTek MT6737 SoC processor. It combines four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at up to 1.25 GHz. The graphics are handled by an ARM Mali-T720 MP2 with a clock frequency of 650 MHz and support for OpenGL ES 3.1, OpenVG 1.1 and DirectX 11. The amount of RAM is 2 GB, and the permanent memory is 16 GB. This space can be expanded using microSD memory cards. This platform supports OTG mode, so you can connect an external USB drive and other peripherals.

    First, it should be noted that the MediaTek MT6737 processor is an overclocked version of the MediaTek MT6735, so its performance is slightly higher. The smartphone copes well not only with simple everyday tasks (calls, robot with documents, surfing the Internet, listening to audio, watching videos), but also allows you to run modern games at minimum or medium graphics settings. For example, Asphalt 8: Airborne and WoT Blitz demonstrate a comfortable display speed of the virtual world at minimum settings, but in Vainglory you can use medium ones. CSR Racing 2 doesn't slow down, but it looks as simple as possible. Dungeon Hunter 5 slows down in places. During prolonged use, the case becomes only slightly warm.

    DOOGEE X5 MAX Pro supports modern mobile networks 2G GSM, 3G UMTS and 4G LTE Cat.4. Support for two SIM cards is implemented on the basis of one radio module. During testing, there were no complaints about its performance. The speaker and microphone perform well. The vibration alert is average in strength.

    Communication modules include Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0.

    The operation of the wireless network modules is quite standard: everything connects quickly and holds the connection well.

    The navigation module is characterized by support for the GPS satellite system (A-GPS). Cold start takes about 10 seconds.

    Autonomous operation

    The undoubted advantage of the tested model can be considered a replaceable lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh. Under moderate load with 50% display brightness (calls, SMS, music, a little internet), it will easily last for two days of battery life. Using only basic functions, the charge can be extended for three days.

    As a result of watching HD video (MPEG-4 / AVC, MKV container, 4 Mbit/s stream), the device was discharged in 12 hours 24 minutes. A gaming simulation using Asphalt 8: Airborne drained its battery in 5 hours and 8 minutes.

    The estimated battery life according to PCMark was 9 hours 23 minutes, while GFXBench gave a result of 456 minutes. In all cases (except for the gaming one), the display brightness was 50%, and the Wi-Fi and GPS modules were activated.

    The battery charging time from the supplied unit (5 V, 1 A) is about 4.5 hours. Yes, for a long time, well, at least you won’t have to do this every day.

    Results

    DOOGEEX5 MAXPro - one of the best, if not the best, smartphone presented on the domestic market in the category up to $85 (2199 UAH). As a result, we get a nice mobile device with a fingerprint scanner, a solid 5-inch HD IPS display, support for two SIM cards, 4G LTE mobile networks and sufficient performance to comfortably perform simple everyday tasks (calls, working with documents, surfing the Internet , listening to audio, watching video) and to run modern games on low, and in some cases, medium graphics settings. It’s also worth mentioning the still current version of Android OS 6.0.1 Marshmallow with good functionality straight out of the package. But, perhaps, the “cherry on the cake” can be considered a 4000 mAh battery, which allows you to forget about charging for 2-3 days with moderate use of the device.

    It is worth understanding that all budget models have some compromises, fortunately in our case it is quite possible to live with them. These include mediocre camera modules, the screen supports only two simultaneous presses and a rather long charging time.

    In general, if you have been eyeing the DOOGEE X5 MAX Pro for a long time, then you can safely take it. For a very reasonable price, it will delight you with fast operation, good functionality and pleasant battery life.

    Advantages:

    • pleasant appearance;
    • good ergonomics;
    • fast and accurate fingerprint scanner;
    • high quality workmanship;
    • high-quality 5-inch HD IPS screen;
    • sufficient level of performance to solve everyday tasks and run modern games at low or medium graphics settings;
    • support for two SIM cards and the necessary network capabilities;
    • current version of Android OS and good functionality right out of the box;
    • high level of autonomy in its price range;
    • USB OTG specification support.

    Peculiarities:

    • relatively long charging time.

    Flaws:

    • mediocre camera modules;
    • Multi-touch technology only supports 2 simultaneous touches.

    Everyone, when choosing a smartphone (and making any other purchase), wants to buy the best, top-end model. But this is not always possible for the most prosaic reasons - the prices for such gadgets in the current situation are simply astronomical. So you have to make a compromise, choosing the most suitable option among devices in the mid-range, budget and ultra-budget segments. Just a representative of the latter came to us for review.

    What is this?

    DOOGEE X5 Max is a purebred Chinese smartphone. With a price in our stores of around 2,000 hryvnia (approximately ten percent of the average cost of a flagship phone), it is equipped seriously enough to compete on an equal footing with mid-level models from AAA manufacturers (or even emerge victorious from such a comparison). There is a 4000 mAh battery, a fingerprint scanner, Android 6.0, support for two SIM cards, a gigabyte of RAM and many other goodies.

    What's in the box?

    While most manufacturers reduce size and simplify packaging under the banner of caring for the environment, DOOGEE simply saves on it. Agree, it’s better to get a less pretentious box than a smartphone with Bluetooth 3.0 instead of 4.0. The smartphone's equipment is minimal, although not exactly budget-friendly. At least DOOGEE did not skimp on the charger - judging by the labeling, it is designed for a current of one ampere. This is especially true when you consider the large capacity of the battery used in the gadget.

    What does DOOGEE X5 Max look like?

    What else they saved on when creating the DOOGEE X5 Max smartphone was the design and materials. The appearance of the device, frankly speaking, is not outstanding - an unpretentious variation on the theme of the now popular “black rectangle with a silver border” solution. The designers tried to reduce the noticeable fullness of the case by making this border narrower, but the weight of under 200 grams is not able to hide such tricks. The edging, of course, is not metal, but made of painted plastic. There are no retractable hatches on the side ends. SIM and memory card slots are hidden behind a removable back cover.

    The front panel is completely covered with glass and factory adhesive film. The latter has moderate oleophobicity and a noticeable “mirror” effect when viewed from the side. You can consider it an additional measure to protect your private data from individuals who like to look at the screens of other people's smartphones.

    The DOOGEE X5 Max uses matte plastic for the back panel. It looks like it should fit well in your hand. But if your palms are dry, the phone becomes slippery, like a wet bar of soap. Even with a cursory examination of the device’s appearance, it is impossible not to notice that in addition to the usual camera and flash, on the rear panel there is also one of the smartphone’s attractions - a fingerprint scanner (still a rare option for devices in this price segment).

    Having squeezed the DOOGEE X5 Max smartphone in your hands, you begin to suspect that the edging is still metal - it is very resistant to external influences. The answer lies within. Looking into the battery compartment, you notice the aluminum frame hidden inside. It is this that provides the body with solidity and additional stability.

    How is his screen?

    The five-inch screen uses an IPS panel with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. There is an air gap between the matrix and the protective glass, which slightly impairs the readability of the screen in the sun. The backlight level has a more noticeable effect on readability. In this smartphone, at maximum power it is not very high, so under bright light, the colors on it fade noticeably. But the minimum brightness level is very comfortable when using the device at night. But the screen still has one noticeable drawback. Not even at the screen itself, but at the touchpad - it only detects two touches. In most programs this is not so critical, but in games there may simply not be enough “controls”.

    Does DOOGEE X5 Max have enough performance?

    The MediaTek MT6580 quad-core processor used in the DOOGEE X5 Max phone does not boast of extreme power. This is clearly visible in the tests. But in everyday use, slowdowns are noticeable only in toys (although playing Asphalt 8 with light slow mo is a pleasure - you navigate all turns perfectly). A gigabyte of RAM is more than enough for everyday activities. On average, the system, social networking clients and Skype eat up about 79% of RAM. So there remains a constant supply of 200 megabytes of RAM.

    What is the operating system version of DOOGEE X5 Max?

    This model is new enough that we immediately get Android M. The basic interface is slightly modified - the list of programs is not displayed on several screens, but with a scrolling ribbon. Otherwise, we have ordinary Android.

    Although if you delve deeper into the settings, it becomes clear that quite a lot of nice features have been added to the operating system itself. So the options included a QR code scanner (which is usually installed as a separate program), a tool for setting up a fingerprint scanner, a turbo download mode, smart gestures and smart unlocking.

    What do these options give us? A QR code scanner is not required in a special presentation. Therefore, let's move on to setting up the biometric scanner. To use it, you must first set up unlocking using a PIN code or graphic password. The process of registering a fingerprint is relatively long - you need to swipe your finger over the scanner many times so that the program can obtain the most complete information. In the future, this allows her to “recognize” your papillary pattern at any inclination and direction of finger movement. In addition to unlocking a smartphone, a fingerprint can also serve as a key to access programs or websites. In this case, you also need to set an additional PIN code for “emergency” access without fingerprints. The scanner can also be used to control some programs (simple one-button actions, such as switching tracks, or like a camera shutter button).

    Turbo downloading is an interesting function, but in our realities it is not yet relevant. Its essence is that when downloading files from the Internet, both the mobile Internet and Wi-Fi are used simultaneously, summing up the bandwidth of both channels. But this only makes sense on 4G networks. The increase in speed from connecting to a 3G channel is not worth the money spent on mobile traffic.

    Smart gestures are close in practicality to using a fingerprint scanner to control programs. With this option, the same swipes and scrolls are available, only not by touching the scanner, but by waving your palm in front of the front camera and proximity sensor.

    But smart unlocking is a really interesting feature. Usually, to call a program or perform an action, you need to “wake up” the screen and only then launch the desired program. And with “smart unlocking” the application is launched directly from the inactive screen. It is enough to draw the desired symbol on the switched off display and we immediately find ourselves in the program we need. Unfortunately, there is no way to independently set a pair from the application and the activation sign - their set is preset and cannot be changed or expanded. The list includes basic system programs: camera, web browser, file manager, music player and phone. In addition, “smart unlocking” allows you to control music playback, as well as “wake up” the phone by double tapping the screen.

    Are there many pre-installed programs?

    I'm glad that DOOGEE did not overload the smartphone with unnecessary software. The basic package contains only Google services and a couple of its programs. Moreover, their selection was so severe that there was no place even for a weather widget. Of course, this is not a problem on a smartphone, because you can always install the program of your favorite weather service.

    What programs, according to DOOGEE, turned out to be so useful that they were able to get into the firmware? In addition to a keyboard with support for Burmese and other Asian languages, we get the Documents To Go office suite, the Parallel Space program for separating work and home accounts, and the proprietary DG Xender file sharing utility.

    Actually, the last two programs are of greatest interest. Parallel Space allows you to keep multiple accounts in the same program on your smartphone. Just launch this application and add what you need: work email, social networks with a group administrator account, or even install some Tinder or Lovetime in a special “hidden” mode (the program will not appear in the list of applications outside of Parallel Space). Access to additional accounts can be password protected to protect data in case of loss of a smartphone or intrusive interest from your significant other. For ease of use and management, there is a built-in task manager and a utility for tracking the volume occupied by additional accounts. In general, the program is interesting and useful not only for separating work and personal life.

    DG Xender is a complete software combine. Typically, manufacturers divide the functions implemented in it between several applications, but DOOGEE decided not to multiply the icons. This program combines direct export/import of smartphone settings and a file transfer service between this phone and other smartphones and computers under one roof. Interestingly, it supports both work through an existing Wi-Fi network and a hotspot. You can only transfer photo and video files to your computer. But when performing operations with another Android smartphone, you can transfer programs and documents and entire folders - the main thing is to also install DG Xender on it (it is available on Google Play).

    How does the DOOGEE X5 Max shoot?

    Surprisingly, the DOOGEE X5 Max phone claims to be a faithful friend who does not like to take pictures. In this model, the main and front cameras are equipped with 5 MP sensors with support for interpolation up to 8 MP. Of course it would be better to have the full 8 megapixels without software processing, but budget dictates its limitations.

    The camera has quite a lot of settings - color effects, manual exposure adjustment, and choice of ISO, contrast, brightness and other basic parameters. You can also activate burst shooting, time-lapse video, self-timer, voice memo recording, smile snapshot, and face detection in the frame. But all this is hidden in the depths of the settings. In quick access you can only select a mode (normal, beauty and panoramic shooting), activate the HDR mode, take a photo by gesture, control the flash and switch between the front and main cameras. If they made a convenient interface for all the camera’s capabilities, then it would not have a price. And so - there is good potential that needs to be presented correctly.

    The quality of photos and videos is simply excellent for a device in this price category. The camera performs well in both bright sunlight and artificial lighting. Where it has a difficult time is at dusk - here the automation can give noticeable failures.

    How is he at work?

    In terms of telephone performance, DOOGEE X5 Max is doing well. The speaker is loud and clear, the microphone does not distort the voice and intonation. The ringing can be heard even in the subway (this is if you set a normal melody instead of the default one). The vibration alert is noticeable, although it is partially neutralized by the internal metal frame.

    Interestingly, the dialer interface tries to adapt to the phone owner. You can fill in your favorite contacts yourself, or you can leave them to chance - gradually they will be filled with those subscribers with whom you communicate most often. The call list not only shows the time of the last connection with the subscriber, but also informs with icons about the number and direction of calls. A pleasant concern for those who prefer to use their smartphone for calls rather than launching mobile applications.

    In terms of operating time, the results are very good. With normal use of the smartphone (20 minutes of calls, about an hour of social networks, ten minutes of navigation, half an hour of games, constantly active mobile Internet and Wi-Fi), its battery lasts for two days. He will be asked to charge late in the evening of the second day.

    What features does DOOGEE X5 Max have?

    The DOOGEE X5 Max smartphone is not without some nuances. There are surprisingly few of them, but they exist. So the camera application always starts in beauty mode. For selfies, this is a definite plus. But if you want to photograph not a person’s face, but some kind of document, building or landscape, then a filter that blurs out skin imperfections will only get in the way.

    The second feature is related to the smart unlock function. In the same LG G2, similar functionality only works if the proximity sensor is not covered by anything (that is, at least it is not in your pocket). And with DOOGEE X5 Max you can easily surf the Internet, take a couple of dozen photos, or even call your ex - all without taking it out of your pocket. So to speak, in hands-free mode. You can combat this problem with the help of a bookcase or by placing your smartphone in your pocket with the screen facing away from you.

    Bottom line

    To be honest, when I started reviewing this phone, I was extremely skeptical. But considering the price DOOGEE X5 Max in Ukraine and the implemented functionality - this is a surprisingly interesting and profitable purchase. Moreover, what is captivating is not only and not so much the technical characteristics, but the fact that the manufacturer did not cut down the smartphone at the software level (something that more eminent manufacturers do not disdain). So if you need to get the most features for your 2000 hryvnia, you should pay attention to the DOOGEE X5 Max phone.

    Three reasons to buy DOOGEE X5 Max
