The Huawei Ascend G620S, priced at around $125, is the latest iteration of the updated vision of the ideal budget phone. The model is equipped with a decent 5-inch screen, 4G and a 64-bit processor. For its price, the smartphone is not bad at all. But I would like to see it not so stripped down and deliberately cheap. The phone runs an older version of Huawei's UI, which makes the Ascend G620S somewhat outdated.

Design

The Huawei Ascend G620S is similar to Samsung phones that were released before the company started making really good models. You can't expect much from a device that costs less than $125. It is made of plastic with a leather-like texture on the back panel.

The G620S comes in black and white variants, and the latter has a silver finish and soft keys. The leather texture is quite fine, with a fine grain and really attracts attention. The phone still feels cheap, although many will like this solution more than the usual gloss of other budget devices.

It's funny to see how big screens have started to appear on cheaper models, and the G620S has one no less than high-end smartphones like the Galaxy S6. It appears even larger due to the wide display bezel and thickness. The buttons and soft keys are easy to reach. An obvious drawback of the model is the lack of backlighting for the soft keys. These are just shiny silver inserts.

The Huawei Ascend G620S doesn't offer all the benefits of a removable plastic cover. There's a micro-SD card slot that makes it easy to add 8GB of internal storage, but the battery can't be replaced. It is held in place by a metal plate.

The main elements of equipment more or less correspond to the price. There is 4G and regular wireless connectivity. There is no fast Wi-Fi, IR transmitter and other additional features. But there is NFC, which many budget rivals lack.

Display

You can forgive the lack of additional connections if the result is a great screen. And the Huawei Ascend G620S has exactly that, although it is not the best in its class. This is a 5-inch display with a resolution of 720 p, quite clear, but still far from the Retina standard. The smartphone offers a pixel density of 294 dpi, which leaves some grain in the image.

But this is normal, it won’t be long before there are phones with 1080p resolution for less than $100-120. For those who have previously used a lower-resolution smartphone, this will seem like a huge step forward. Where Huawei falls short is in screen technology, which is less advanced than the best models.

The display layer is too far from the display surface. This reduces contrast and visibility outdoors. The Ascend G620S struggles with very bright sunlight. In more expensive screens, several layers are combined and have no air gaps, which has improved their performance.

The light sensor allows the smartphone to select the appropriate backlight brightness.

Unfortunately, the installed software disappointed some phone owners. Firstly, the G620S runs on the outdated Android 4.4.4 operating system. To make matters worse, the old version 2.3 of Huawei's Emotion UI is installed, which actually defines the look and feel of the smartphone more than the operating system core.

The basic layout of the bootloader is the same as the newer version, but there is no separate application menu. There are only a few desktops, just like the iPhone. This means that when you install an application, it will simply appear on one of your desktops. At first, when a user downloads many new applications, it becomes annoying. Icons can be grouped into folders and the number of desktops can be reduced.

But the outdated software is far inferior to, for example, the Motorola Moto G, although it does offer some useful features. Themes allow you to completely change the appearance of your phone, including wallpaper and icons. The default theme is one of the best, but there are many additional ones that can be downloaded using the corresponding application.

How to remove low-quality software

The smartphone is a little overloaded with unnecessary Gameloft applications that clutter up the phone's already small memory. Of the 8 GB, only half is available. However, owners have the opportunity to rid their Huawei Ascend G620S of unnecessary junk. To do this, w3bsit3-dns.com advises unlocking the bootloader and gaining root user rights. The access code can be obtained by sending a letter to the manufacturer's email with the serial number, IMEI 1, product code and model name. Unblocking is done using the ADB program. Performance

The smartphone performs well thanks to the 1.2GHz 64-bit quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor supported by 1GB RAM. Despite the fact that the Huawei Ascend G620S has low specifications, they are excellent for a budget phone. Aside from some UI bugs, the G620S largely runs smoothly, especially once the owner gets the hang of using the device. Sometimes there are delays, but very minor.

The phone is also good at games. 3D only slightly reduces frame rates in the most complex (or under-optimized) applications, such as Asphalt 8. This is confirmed by the results of testing in Geekbench 3 - the smartphone scores about 1330 points, which is 10% more than the Snapdragon 400 Moto G.

It would be nice to have more memory for installing games and storing music.

The phone is equipped with a rear 8 megapixel camera with LED flash and a front resolution of 2 megapixels. Photos come out surprisingly respectable, with punchy colors and no red clutter like many cheaper models. This is partly achieved thanks to a fairly smart mode, which not only does a good job of judging exposure and color temperature, but allows you to focus closer than in automatic mode, which is useful for macro photography. Noise is low in low light conditions, and exposure is boosted enough to provide good detail. User reviews call the natural dynamic range of the Huawei Ascend G620S camera poor, but there is an HDR mode that compensates for this problem. What's missing is speed. The slowness of the camera reduces the pleasure you get from working with it. The camera app takes almost 5 seconds to load, there are shutter lags, and Smart and HDR modes are significantly slower than Auto.

The camera results can be decent if you have patience, but many good moments can be missed.

Battery life

The Huawei Ascend G620S smartphone, thanks to its confident endurance, wins back several points in its favor. Although the battery capacity is only 2000 mAh, the charge lasts for a long time. We are talking about one day of intensive use. However, with moderate use, by the evening only 30% of the battery charge remains. According to reviews, a reflective screen in the open air forces you to increase its brightness to the maximum, which significantly increases energy consumption. Therefore, the device is more suitable for office workers. The standard endurance test gives 10.5 hours of battery life, which is better than the Moto G. This is most likely due to the aggressive power management system, 64-bit processor and less power-hungry display.

Sound quality

The tone of the Huawei Ascend G620S speaker is described by user reviews as clear, and the sound is not too smooth or with the addition of excessive warmth. For this reason, the voices do not sound very attractive, but understandable. There is also an additional microphone for noise cancellation. You might expect a cheap smartphone to look cheap, but here you will be pleasantly surprised. The design of Ascend G620S mobile phones is quite presentable, although it does not claim to be original.

The smartphone looks elegant due to its thinness and metallic stripes around the screen, but it also fits well in the hand thanks to the textured plastic and rounded edges. Since it is quite large (14.3 x 7.2 x 0.85 cm, weight 160 g), the manufacturer wisely moved the physical buttons (volume and unlock) to the right side, where they are easy to reach. They protrude slightly above the body, are easy to find without looking and difficult to confuse.

Screen

The Huawei Ascend G620S smartphone boasts a large 5-inch display, but its resolution is only 720 by 1280 (pixel density per inch - 294). This means that the picture is not as sharp as more expensive models with a similar screen size, but it is nevertheless quite bright and pleasant to use. Users with small hands will have to get used to its size.

The smartphone has good viewing angles, and if you increase the brightness level, it can be used in bright sunlight.

The manufacturer still prefers to place the touch buttons on the panel below the screen, although it would be more ergonomic to allocate this space under the display.

The smartphone has a fairly powerful quad-core Qualcomm processor, common among similarly priced models, operating at a frequency of 1.2 GHz. Its interesting feature is that it is not 32-bit, but 64-bit. But in reality this does not provide significant advantages for two reasons:

• The smartphone has an outdated Android 4.4 KitKat OS installed, which is not optimized for 64-bit processors;
• 1 GB of RAM is not enough to fully benefit from this.

However, the smartphone's test performance is slightly higher than that of its competitors.

But with permanent memory things are worse. The built-in volume is only 8 GB, a significant part of which (4.18 GB) is occupied by the OS. And the possibilities for increasing it are unexpectedly small - the smartphone supports memory cards up to only 32 GB in size.

One of the main advantages of this model is 4G support, which is rarely seen in the budget segment.

In addition to 4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and NFC are available.

The call quality of the smartphone is quite high. The interlocutor can be heard well, and two microphones successfully cope with the noise reduction function, i.e. on the other side you will also be heard well.

Since the model uses the very popular Android 4.4 OS, all functions of the smartphone are intuitive and do not require long learning and getting used to.

The Ascend G620S is quite fast and swiping through screens or navigating through the application list doesn't slow it down at all. The same goes for running programs alone. But if you have several applications open at the same time, or an application is being installed in the background, then be prepared for freezes.

For most of the necessary functions (contacts, SMS, music player, etc.), the manufacturer provides the buyer with pre-installed utilities. But, since they often have less functionality or elements in Chinese, it is easier to replace them with applications downloaded from Google Play.

Battery

The Ascend G620S has a small battery capacity - only 2000 mA. This is less than its competitors, but it performs quite well in tests and everyday life. For example, after a day of active use (16 hours, several calls, half an hour of games, using applications for a long period), 19% of the charge remained. So the smartphone will only need charging overnight.

As a last resort, you can switch to Ultra Power Saving mode, which almost doubles the battery life, but at the same time blocks access to all functions except calls and SMS.

There is also a utility utility that shows which physical components or applications are currently actively consuming battery power.

As mentioned above, those who like to carry a spare battery with them are out of luck, because the “original” battery cannot be removed.

On paper, the cameras of the Huawei Ascend G620S are completely identical to those that can be found in competitors - the main 8 MP (with flash) and the front 2 MP. But often the pixels in the characteristics do not correspond to reality. So, the iPhone 6 also has an 8 megapixel camera, but if you compare the pictures taken on it and on the G620S, the difference will be obvious.

The photos are of average quality, the colors are bright, but not entirely accurate. The flash greatly whitens the picture. As a result, the result is slightly worse not only than competitors, but even one of Huawei’s smartphones – Honor 3C.

The shooting application is rich in various functions, ranging from HDR and Panorama mode to various filters. There is even an option to add a watermark.

To take a photo, you just need to press the shutter icon, just the screen, or the volume button, which in this situation replaces the physical shutter button.

The camera can shoot video in quality up to Full HD (1080 pixels). The result is quite watchable, although focus is often lost.

Appearance

The first thing that comes to mind when hearing about a budget smartphone is a device with a boring and cheap design, but the Huawei Ascend G620S pleasantly surprised us. Our first impression was the back of the case, which resembles leather, has a textured effect, and overall looks quite attractive. Still, you shouldn’t give in to the extravaganza because in reality it’s just a piece of plastic.

On the sides of the case there is a metal edging, which gives the phone a certain solidity. If we talk about the thickness of the product, the device turned out to be quite thin with a mark of 8.5 mm. The smartphone lies confidently in your hand; there is no need to worry about it slipping out. The power button and volume rocker are conveniently located on the right side of the case. The keys stick out a little and are easy to feel with your finger, and the different sizes will protect you from being pressed by mistake. The full dimensions of the Ascend G620S are 142.9 x 72 x 8.5 mm. With the external inspection completed, it's time to look under the cover. The back cover is firmly attached to the frame of the device, and in order to remove it you just need to catch on a small recess in the lower right corner.

The first thing we noticed was the installed non-removable battery, which destroyed any hopes of its quick replacement in case of discharge. Next you can see slots for microSD and microSIM memory cards. By the way, to insert cards you need to remove the cover. The smartphone supports MicroSD up to 32 GB and this is undoubtedly a big plus since the phone’s built-in memory is only 8 GB.

For its money, Huawei Ascend G620S is equipped with a large screen size, which is 5 inches with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. In our opinion, Full HD resolution would be more pleasant for such a diagonal, but let’s remember the price for a moment. The pixel density was 294 ppi, like that of the direct competitor Moto G. Returning to the resolution, we can say that the best solution for the manufacturer would be to equip the smartphone with a 4.7-inch screen, because the test subject lacks sharpness, but the display is not deprived of brightness. Everything is perfectly visible when directly hit by the sun's rays, but not without some reflection. Viewing angles are quite acceptable.

Once again, for such a low price, the Ascend G620S is the most powerful large-screen mobile device in its segment. The device is equipped with a 64-bit 4-core processor, a main 8 MP camera and 4G support, and these are important features at the moment.

A large screen diagonal with rich and bright colors will fully allow you to enjoy watching videos and playing your favorite game. Unfortunately, the 4-core Snapdragon 410 and 1 GB of RAM are not enough to switch to the latest Android Lollipop, but under KitKat, which is installed in the device as the operating system, the smartphone feels confident.

In general, working with the device goes smoothly. There were no problems with switching home screens or freezing applications. The performance is enough to cope even with a game like Real Racing 3, but, let’s face it, it’s not without a drop in frame rate. The device also slows down if applications are being installed. Jittery transitions and scrolling are noticeable.

Huawei Ascend G620S is equipped with 4G LTE Cat.4, which means Internet operation at speeds of up to 150 Mbit/s. In reality, of course, the device’s mark fluctuated around 60 Mbit even in the area with the best 4G signal.

Performance

Huawei Ascend G620S is built on a 64-bit 4-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with a clock frequency of 1.2 GHz, which is supported by 1 GB of RAM. Nowadays, many budget smartphone models are equipped with 4-core chipsets, but not all of them can boast of 64-bit architecture. If you consider that the device is equipped with 1 GB of RAM, then Android 4.4 KitKat becomes the limit. However, support for 64-bit processors was implemented in the Lollipop version, and therefore many may consider buying a smartphone a waste of money. Still, let's pay attention to the performance results of the checksums. According to Geekbench 3, the Ascend G620S scored an impressive 1442 points in multi-core mode. For comparison, the Moto G on a 32-bit processor received 1142 points, the Sony Xperia M2 - 1133 points, and even the more expensive Huawei Ascend G7 scored 1398 points.

Autonomy

The Ascend G620S has a non-removable battery with a capacity of 2000 mAh. By today's standards, this capacity is too small for Android devices, and this is undoubtedly a disadvantage for the Chinese manufacturer. At the same time, direct competitors Moto G, Asus Zenfon 5 and Sony Xperia M2 Aqua have an order of magnitude higher battery capacity. When watching a video for 90 minutes with the screen at full brightness, the battery indicator dropped by 23% (Moto G - by 26%, Asus Zenfon 5 - by 22%, Sony Xperia M2 Aqua - by 20%).

This indicator once again proves that the Huawei Ascend G620S does not have the best battery capacity, even in its price range. However, the average user will be interested in another test. For almost 16 hours in mixed mode, which included several short conversations, 30 minutes of gaming and the rest of the time was devoted to applications and surfing the Internet, the indicator showed 19% battery charge. Fortunately, the manufacturer took care of the battery life and provided the smartphone with several energy saving modes.

The phone also has power control provided by the device, and this will allow the user to react in time to possible problems affecting the battery life and prevent unnecessary battery consumption. To be honest, the Huawei Ascend G620S has more than enough gadgets to control battery consumption, but it would be better to give it a larger capacity battery.

Camera

Ascend G620S has an 8 MP main camera located on the back of the body and a 2 MP front camera on the front panel. Pictures taken with the rear camera are quite suitable for a budget employee. The smartphone is not deprived of HDR modes, panorama and range filters. There is also the ability to add watermarks and focus on the object made on the finished photo.

When shooting close-up, image processing is quite good, but some details behind the focus leave much to be desired, especially when there is a lot of the same color in the photo. This drawback is demonstrated in the picture below.

Problems also arise when there is a lot of movement in the background. The device implements switching between 4:3 and 16:9 sides, the latter is also cut down to 6 MP. Video recording is a little worse than photography, but there is support for shooting up to Full HD.

Conclusions

Huawei Ascend G620S will be a good choice for those who need a powerful smartphone at an affordable price. In terms of technical characteristics, the device surpasses many budget smartphones from other manufacturers. For $150, the device is offered with a 5-inch HD screen, 64-bit Snapdragon 410 and 4G support. Of course, there were some downsides. The smartphone runs Android 4.4 KitKat and, unfortunately, there will be no option to upgrade to Lollipop. A resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels would be more suitable for a 4.7-inch screen rather than a 5-inch panel. Low battery capacity, although with more battery saving tools compared to competitors.

Well, let's probably start with the fact that this is Hodor Honor, and not Huawei. That is, of course Huawei, but...

In general, Huawei now produces smartphones under 2 brands. Honor - inexpensive smartphones for the mass market. Huawei and its Ascend lineup are top-end smartphones, so to speak “premium”. Although in Russia one can still recall the not-so-pleasant pronunciation of the Huawei brand, this is far from the main reason. In China, by the way, Honor has long been sold as an independent brand. Rumor has it that there are rumors about the division of the company and the allocation of separate design and development centers, but for now Honor is just an inscription.

In general, the smartphone makes a calm impression, with a margin of “pretty”. On the front part there are 3 control buttons, and in their “non-standard” design, like Alcatel (TCL), some Lenovo and other Asian manufacturers. To the left of the central button is “Back”, and to the right is “Menu”. You have to get used to it, but at first it’s annoying...


Also above the screen we see a selfie camera and a voice speaker. There is also a light sensor, proximity sensor and an alert LED.
The diode is bright and clearly visible, lights up when charging and blinks when receiving notifications.


On the back cover there is a camera, a flash and a slot for a ringing speaker. Moreover, the back cover is slightly rounded, that is, the smartphone is slightly thicker in the center than at the edges. This also allows you to achieve a more comfortable “grip” of the smartphone.


The left side is pristine, the keys are located on the right. The power button and volume control keys are located so that when grabbed with either hand, they are right under your finger.

The smartphone weighs 160 grams, so it can’t be called light, but it fits comfortably in one hand. The build quality does not raise any questions, there are no squeaks from the back cover, although time does not spare anyone. No backlash was also noticed.

The smartphone operates on the Android 4.4.4 OS, and there is definitely no doubt about the update to Android 5.0 - the update will be official. The system runs Huawei's own shell - EMUI version 2.3. I must say, I saw this shell from Huawei back in version 1.x on the Huawei Ascend P6 and then it didn’t make a splash, but then I appreciated the beauty of the firmware. It turned out to be very, very convenient and literally crammed with all sorts of tricks. In my personal ratings of convenient firmware, EMUI occupies a worthy place at the level of Flyme OS, MIUI, LeWa and others like them. It will be interesting to look at EMUI 3.0 in the final version (the beta is already online). You can review EMUI 2.3 and screenshots of the upcoming EMUI 3.0.

A noticeable disadvantage of the smartphone is the lack of Google services in the firmware, that is, the smartphone user will most likely have to download the Google services that he needs himself. This is done quite simply, through the Huawei App Market installed on the smartphone, but the very need to do some manipulations to install applications and synchronize contacts is not encouraging...

Overall, the smartphone turned out to be pleasant. This is a typical “workhorse” - quite productive, with a good camera, battery... Such phones are bought for a long time.
For me, the smartphone has become something of a revelation, first of all, thanks to the pleasant and well-thought-out EMUI shell, working LTE and “smart” camera.
