In the first case, the pixel density per inch is 326, and in the second it is 401 pixels/inch. If you look at it with the naked eye, the difference is not noticeable, so you can ignore this parameter.

With its smaller overall dimensions, the iPhone 6s model is more convenient in everyday life, and its larger version can be a good alternative to a tablet, car navigator and book reader. The iPhone Plus is more enjoyable to watch movies and videos, but it is not as convenient to use with one hand as the more compact 6s model.

The iPhone 6s weighs 143 grams, while the 6s Plus weighs just over 192 grams.

In 2014, Apple abandoned the practice of releasing one smartphone and introduced two iPhone 6 models from the iPhone 6 plus. A year later, improved versions of these smartphones with the prefix “s” appeared. These are iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s plus. In this article we will look at these models and talk about how the iPhone 6s differs from the iPhone 6s plus and what advantages each of these models provides.

If we compare how the iPhone 6s differs from the iPhone 6s plus, the first thing that catches your eye is the screen. The iPhone 6s plus received more, versus 4.7 inches for the iPhone 6s model. The screen resolution has also changed. The iPhone 6s plus received a resolution of 1920x1080 (with a pixel density of 401 ppi), and the iPhone 6s received a resolution of 1334x750 pixels (a pixel density of 326 ppi).

There are also slight differences in the declared contrast of the screens. So the screen contrast of the regular version of the iPhone 6s was 1400:1, and the screen contrast of the enlarged iPhone 6s plus model was 1300:1. Otherwise the screens are the same. They have the same brightness, full sRGB support, the same Taptic Engine and everything else.

Dimensions and weight

The second noticeable difference between the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s plus is their dimensions and weight. Due to the larger screen, the iPhone 6s plus received more impressive dimensions and more weight.

The dimensions of the iPhone 6s plus are 77.9 × 158.2 × 7.3 mm versus 67.1 × 138.3 × 7.1 mm for the iPhone 6s. And the weight of the iPhone 6s plus is 192 grams versus 143 grams for the iPhone 6s.

Camera

Both smartphones received Apple's proprietary camera called iSight. Moreover, the characteristics of this camera are almost the same for both models. This is a 12 megapixel matrix with a pixel size of 1.22µm, ƒ/2.2 aperture and True Tone flash. The only difference between the cameras of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s plus is.

The iPhone 6s plus has optical image stabilization, which allows you to take clearer shots on the go or in low-light conditions. The front camera, also known as the FaceTime camera, is the same on both these smartphones.

Battery

The last differences between the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s plus smartphones concern the battery. The iPhone 6s plus smartphone has a more capacious battery that provides up to 24 hours of talk time and 80 hours of music listening.

While the iPhone 6s battery in the same operating modes can only provide 14 and 50 hours of battery life.

Is it worth upgrading from iPhone 6 to iPhone 6S? This is a question that Apple product lovers have been actively asking themselves in recent days. In the end, this is not the seventh iPhone, but the same sixth, but just with the letter S at the end :) Is the 2015 model so different from the previous one and is it worth paying extra for it?

We suggest comparing the characteristics of the iPhone 6 with the iPhone 6S so that everything falls into place. Let's start with the appearance.

Design

In this regard, the IPhone 6 and 6S are very similar, but the latter will be slightly larger in size (138.3 x 67.1 x 7.1mm versus 138.1 x 67 x 6.9mm) and slightly heavier (143g versus 129g). The new model comes with an HD Retina screen with support for 3D Touch technology (responses to pressure on the screen) and a more robust metal body made from 7000 series aluminum.

CPU

Both models have a 64-bit processor and co-processors for analyzing movements in smartphones. However, the iPhone 6S has a more modern and energy-efficient A9 chip with more powerful graphics. There is also a built-in M9 motion compressor.

Memory

The sixth model is equipped with 1GB of RAM, the 6S has 2GB on board.

As for non-volatile memory, both models have modifications of 16GB, 64GB and 128GB.

It is not yet clear whether there is a difference in memory speed and quality because the detailed characteristics of the chips are not known.

Camera

The main iSight camera in the iPhone 6s is very similar in many cases to the one in the iPhone 6. But there are also differences:

• 12 megapixel sensor with 1.22µ pixels (was an 8 megapixel sensor with 1.5µ pixels)
• Live Photos support (special gif images with sound)
• 63 megapixel panoramic photos

The iPhone 6s camera supports video recording at 4K resolution (3840×2160) at 30 frames/sec (30fps). There is also support for recording in slo-mo mode (1080p at 120fps and 720p at 240fps). While recording 4K video, you can take photos (8 MP); there is also support for playback zoom and time-lapse recording technologies with stabilization.

The front camera of the iPhone 6s has also undergone a slight upgrade and now has a 5-megapixel sensor with flash (previously the sensor was 1.2 megapixels, without flash).

Battery

Even though the iPhone 6S battery reportedly has a slightly lower battery capacity than the original 6, the battery life of both models is similar.

iPhone 6s supports faster 4G LTE (LTE-A), higher-quality wireless 802.11a/b/g/n/ac with MIMO (was 802.11a/b/g/n/ac) and Bluetooth 4.2 (was 4.0 ).

Other

iPhone 6S has the second generation of Touch ID fingerprint sensor built into the Home button. It is expected that it will do its job even faster and more reliably.

The comparison between the original six and the six with the letter s is clear. What is the difference between iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 Plus? 6 Plus has:

• slightly larger dimensions (158.20mm x 77.90mm x 7.30mm vs. 138.30mm x 67.10mm x 7.10mm) and weight (192g vs. 143g)
• larger screen size with higher resolution (5.5 inches, 1920x1080 px, 401 ppi versus 4.7 inches, 1334x750 px, 326 ppi)
• higher declared battery life (16 days in standby mode, 80 hours of listening to music, 14 hours of watching videos, 24 hours of talk time versus 10 days, 50 hours, 11 hours and 14 hours, respectively)

In all other respects, the hardware and characteristics of the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus are the same.

The release of the next version of the Apple iPhone is traditionally accompanied by great excitement. They are masters at this. The subject of this article is the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Let's see what's hidden in these markings and what differences they mean for the end user.

Housing: design, dimensions and materials

Yes, the new iPhones are extremely similar to the old models. This is an area where Apple isn't alone. Samsung smartphones are also extremely similar to each other, in order to distinguish them you need to be quite aware of their model range.

*Lyrical digression. Gone are the days when every new phone was a work of art. What do the first smartphones from Nokia cost? In my opinion, the flight of thought of designers is constrained by the touch screen, which should occupy the entire front part of the smartphone. There’s not much you can do here, not like with a physical keyboard.
iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are noticeably larger and heavier than their predecessors:

• iPhone 6S: 138.3 x 67.1 x 7.1 mm and 143 g.
• iPhone 6: 138.1 x 67 x 6.9 mm and 129 g.
• iPhone 6S Plus: 158.2 x 77.9 x 7.3 mm and 192 g.
• iPhone 6 Plus: 158.1 x 77.8 x 7.1 mm and 172 g.

A much more important improvement is the increase in strength. The deformations to which models 6 and 5 were subject caused great harm to the reputation, even if they were isolated in nature. Apple switched from 6000 series aluminum to the 7000 series, which is much stronger. And it is unlikely that in everyday use you will encounter such force to bend.

In addition, Apple has improved the durability of glass on displays. There were no technical details reported about how they achieved this on glass.
As a result, we have an iPhone that is larger, heavier and more durable, but frankly just as slippery when it lies in the hand.

Display

Despite the latest rumors before the release, the screen resolutions remained unchanged:

• iPhone 6S: 4.7-inch, 1334 x 750 pixels, 326 pixels per inch (PPI)
• iPhone 6S Plus: 5.5 inches, 1920 x 1080 pixels, 401 pixels per inch (PPI)

Is this important for selection? For me no. For comparison, the iPhone 6S has a pixel density corresponding to an 11-inch laptop, and the 6 Plus has a 13-inch laptop. This is certainly less than that of direct competitors. It's just that smartphone makers are living in a time of frenzied resolution battle in which Apple is not participating.
Will owners be disappointed with the image quality? By no means in any everyday use: colors, clarity, viewing angles - everything is fine.
Both smartphones support 3D Touch. 3D Touch is a radically new method of interacting with a device - which allows you to determine the force of your pressing. You can think of many practical applications for this technology, for example the degree of pressure, like an accelerator in racing games. This is probably why the glass was made stronger so that very strong users would not push through it :)
The implementation of 3D Touch is hardware, so all old models are left behind.

Those who bought the 6S may feel a little depleted in numbers, since the size and pixel density are the only differences from the 6 Plus.

Cameras

While the 3D sensor delights techies more, who have received an additional gadget for use in their developments. Regular users are happy with the new camera:

• iPhone 6S and 6S Plus: rear 12 megapixel, F2.0 lens, autofocus, dual LED flash, 4k video recording. Front: 5 megapixel sensor, F2.0 lens, 1080p video recording
• iPhone 6 and 6 Plus - 8 megapixel sensor, F2.2 lens, autofocus, dual LED flash, 1080p video recording. Front: 1.2 megapixel, F2.2 lens, 720p video recording

On paper, they don't match the characteristics of new smartphones from Samsung, LG and Sony. But 12 MP combined with good software from Appe puts these models on a par with the best.
Apple also added a nice trick: recording “live photos”. Live photos record 1.5 seconds of video before and after the moment of shooting.

Big caveat: Apple has once again shortchanged the smaller iPhone. The 6S doesn't get optical image stabilization (OIS) like the 6S Plus. Instead, it's back to digital image stabilization (DIS), which gives the 6 Plus a noticeable edge in shooting quality.

Performance

In terms of performance, the two phones are almost identical. Both use Apple's new 64-bit A9 processor, which boasts faster clock speeds than previous models and a significantly faster GPU.
The A9 chipset will offer 70% faster processor performance and 90% faster graphics performance compared to the A8 chipset in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
Perhaps the most significant performance improvement for both phones, however, is the doubling of the 2GB RAM allotment.
Will there be a real world difference between them? Actually yes. You may have already noticed that, all other things being equal (meaning the processor), the 6S has a lower resolution, and therefore less resources are spent on drawing the image. But this does not mean that the difference will be striking for the user. A couple of “parrots” can be won in tests.

Battery life and charging time

Apple boasts that the A9 is more energy efficient, but unfortunately the optimization isn't enhanced by a larger battery. Instead - much to the disappointment - the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus actually have less powerful batteries than the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus:

• iPhone 6S: 1,715 mAh, iPhone 6S Plus: 2,750 mAh
• iPhone 6: 1810 mAh, iPhone 6 Plus: 2915 mAh

If you look at the results, the iPhone 6S loses a lot in battery life.
In addition, Apple continues to ignore fast and wireless charging technologies that have become standard features on competing phones. Batteries are a major disappointment.

Conclusion

Both phones have received significant upgrades over last year's models, despite their similarities in appearance.
The iPhone 6S Plus is objectively the better phone of the two:

• with the best camera (optical stabilization);
• the screen diagonal is larger, the pixel density is higher;
• significantly longer battery life

Of course, the iPhone 6S has one tangible advantage: its practicality. It is more compact and cheaper. Most likely, these qualities will make it more popular than the 6S Plus.

We tested the new products for 2 weeks to understand what purposes each of them was suitable for.

Apple simultaneously released two very similar and at the same time different premium smartphones: the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. What is the difference between the new products and the main question - which smartphone to choose? We've been passionately testing the new iPhone 6s for two weeks to see what each one is suited for.

The era of small 3.5 and 4-inch iPhones is becoming a thing of the past, leaving room for larger displays that provide more screen real estate. The diagonal of the iPhone 6 is significantly larger than the diagonal of the iPhone 5S, but it is still quite comfortable for use with one hand, which cannot be said about the iPhone 6 Plus, which is somewhat reminiscent of the iPad mini - here you will always have to use both hands. The design of the models is the same, as is the filling and interfaces.

The devices, first of all, differ in battery life. The iPhone 6 drains much faster than we expected it to, although it will last most users a full workday. The iPhone 6 Plus is larger and, accordingly, has a one and a half times more capacious battery, which gives a noticeable increase in its autonomy. The new items are also distinguished by their displays: the iPhone 6 Plus screen is clearer and has Full HD resolution (1920×1080) versus 1344×750 on the “main” version, which, however, is also sufficient for a 4.7-inch diagonal.

In terms of OS performance, the iPhone 6, in our opinion, works better, the iPhone 6 Plus still needs some minor improvements. Still, for good optimization it is not enough to simply stretch the icons to larger sizes, and its work in landscape mode is not yet ideal. In addition, the camera of the 5.5-inch iPhone received an optical stabilization system, which the iPhone 6 did not have. However, we did not notice any obvious difference in the quality of shooting, so we would not recommend using this criterion when choosing a new iPhone. So, first things first.

Dimensions and ease of use with one hand

New iPhones have become larger. If operating a 4-inch iPhone with one hand was not difficult, now reaching the desired icon has become much more difficult. Yes, both smartphones have rounded, smooth shapes, thanks to which they fit well in the hand, but there is no talk of operating them with one hand. Compared to Android smartphones, which have navigation buttons located at the bottom, the iPhone has one control key, and navigation is carried out using icons in applications, which are usually located at the top. It turns out that reaching for them with a finger of the same hand in which you hold the iPhone is inconvenient.

The problem is partly solved by the Home button. With a double light touch of the key (no need to press or hold), you will “lower” your desktop down. You can “raise” the image back by double-tapping again, “pulling” the display back to where it was, or simply wait until it returns to its place on its own. If you accidentally stumble upon this feature for the first time, you may think that your iPhone is broken and glitchy. It looks beautiful only on the desktop, but in applications it seems that the image simply falls into nothingness and a dark gray void appears almost on half the screen. Perhaps this void will soon be filled with something in the next update. The function can be used in most applications that work in portrait mode, but in landscape mode it is assumed that you are holding the device with both hands, and this function is no longer needed.

Double pressing the key (with a click) will show you a list of active running applications; you can quickly switch between them and close them with a “swipe” up, which, as it turns out, is not always convenient. For example, if you do this quickly and before the moving icon has stopped, the phone will assume that you want to scroll through the list rather than close the application, so you will have to wait a little.

One thing we didn't like about both iPhone 6s was the wobbly buttons. On the iPhone 6 Plus, which we bought for testing, you could easily twitch the power key and both volume keys from side to side, but on the iPhone 6 - only the volume keys, and if you put it to your ear, you can even hear them hang out. This was not the case on iPhone 5s.

The iPhone 6 Plus is significantly larger, so if you don't want to switch to a phablet, it's better to stick with the iPhone 6. At least it can still be used with one hand. The iPhone 6 Plus can be held in one hand, but cannot be operated with one hand at all, and it can hardly be carried in a pocket. We can also add that the body of the iPhone 6 Plus is not the most durable, which we noticed in tests, but you will have to try hard to bend it with your hands.

Display: Big 6 Plus for multimedia or 'standard' all-rounder?

The difference in smartphone diagonals is only 0.8 inches, but the 6 Plus seems huge compared to the iPhone 6. Apple doesn't want to miss out on phablet market share: judging by the resolution alone (1920x1080), it's clear that the iPhone 6 Plus is designed for multimedia pleasures and games, which is what a large display is for. The resolution of the small iPhone 6 has been raised to maintain the same pixel density as on the iPhone 5S. In the case of the 6 Plus, it is 404 pixels per inch, which is a quite common solution for a large diagonal.

However, you can’t yet fully enjoy the benefits of the iPhone 6 Plus display, since not all games and applications are optimized for it: many look grainy, and in a number of games, including the same Asphalt 8, pixelation is striking. Over time, this will, of course, be corrected, but for now it greatly spoils the experience, especially when the level of expectations from the device is very high.

As for color rendition, viewing angles and brightness, both new products have no problems. The brightness is high, and the viewing angles are not just wide, but wide, and, importantly, with virtually no color shift when deviating. Both displays do not formally have a glove mode, but nevertheless you can work with them in thin gloves, however, unfortunately, there are no guarantees, it all depends on the characteristics of your personal gloves.

Battery life

If such a parameter as battery life is important to you, then the iPhone 6 Plus will be more preferable to you than the “main” version. It is equipped with a much larger battery (2915 mAh versus 1810 on the iPhone 6), which gives an increase in battery life, despite the difference in resolutions and display sizes. As usual, both batteries are non-removable. In our tests, the iPhone 6 Plus lasted 7 and a half hours versus 6 hours and 40 minutes for the iPhone 6 in the video test with the screen at maximum brightness. The difference is not that big due to the much higher resolution and display diagonal of the iPhone 6 Plus. As for the test in audio player mode, in our tests the large iPhone showed itself to be noticeably more durable - 79 hours versus 55 for the iPhone 6. It is curious that at the presentation Apple announced 80 and 50 hours of operation in this mode, respectively - they were not deceived. The battery life of the iPhone 6 Plus is noticeably longer and may be one of the reasons to prefer the larger “main” model. At the same time, we still expected better results from both models.

Interfaces, memory and performance

In all this, the new iPhones are identical. Despite the seemingly outdated characteristics (“only” 1 GB of RAM, a dual-core processor operating at up to 1.4 GHz), both smartphones are good in terms of performance, and all applications are optimized for fast operation.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are the same in terms of built-in memory - you can choose from models with 16/64/128 GB of memory, plus 5 free GB in the iCloud cloud service, with the ability to pay extra for additional gigabytes. And of course, it will hardly be news to anyone that iPhones do not support memory cards and, perhaps, never will.

The set of interfaces is also similar: dual-band Wi-Fi with support for the high-speed 802.11ac standard, Bluetooth, GPS with GLONASS support and even an NFC chip, although it works exclusively for Apple Pay’s own payment system.

Is it possible to choose one iPhone over another here? Since we’re talking about games, the iPhone 6 Plus is more convenient as a gaming platform: firstly, the large diagonal is conducive to this, taking the phone’s gaming capabilities to a new level, and secondly, a 20% higher pixel density will be for gamers noticeable and pleasant, finally, you can cover more details and it’s easier to “hit” the right button at the right moment.

Camera

The main characteristics of the cameras are the same: the main camera is 8 MP and the front camera is 1.2 MP. You can evaluate the quality of the photos in the reviews. As for comparing models, the iPhone 6 Plus has everything that the iPhone 6 has, plus optical image stabilization. The optical system stabilizes the image if your hand shakes or you don't move your iPhone smoothly when shooting. Overall, we did not notice any significant difference and cannot say that this somehow affects the quality of photos or videos: the effect can only be noticeable in poor lighting. Note that some of our experts who took part in the tests even thought that the video on the iPhone 6 was more “stable” and smoother.

Working with text: prediction, additional icons and keyboards from third-party developers

The keyboards now have a feature that predicts the next word. Let's just say that it works well, but so far only for the English language. We hope that someday there will be Russian, but judging by the fact that Siri does not speak Russian in iOS 8, then we may have to wait a long time. In addition, you can finally change the keyboard by downloading alternative options in the App Store, a kind of another “degree of freedom” in iOS 8. However, most keyboards do not yet support the Russian language, so you will have to search and pay some money for an alternative keyboard with Russian language.

In some apps, the iPhone 6 keyboard switches to landscape mode when you rotate the display. On it you can find a new column of icons on the left and right - for a comma, a period, moving the cursor left and right, a separate icon for calling emoticons and some others. At the same time, the iPhone 6 Plus received an “extended” keyboard in landscape mode in all applications - with two columns of new icons on the left and right. On the right side there are: “remove the keyboard”, moving the cursor left and right, commas, periods, question marks and an exclamation mark, which were clearly missing earlier. On the left side there are icons for copy/cut/paste, etc.

It is worth noting that some applications on the iPhone 6 Plus, for example, in the standard messenger, often cause confusion. For example, when you rotate, you can “lose” the cursor, it simply resets and you have to move your finger to position it where you need it, otherwise you simply lose the text you typed. In general, the iPhone 6 Plus keyboard is more advantageous; it is larger in size and has additional keys, but, in our opinion, it is still a little “crude” and needs to be improved.

Peculiarities

Like the iPhone 5S, the new items are equipped with a fingerprint scanner – Touch ID. The operating system is iOS 8, and both can work with the Apple Pay payment system. One of the important differences between smartphones is that the iPhone 6 Plus can be used in landscape mode. You rotate the device and the image rotates along with it, along with the desktop, settings and messenger. Only the dialer, multitasking, control and event panels do not automatically flip when you rotate the display. We also encountered that in the pre-installed music application the image disappears, leaving only a small icon with the album logo in the corner of the display, and the rest of the screen is filled with black. In addition, in landscape mode, the control panel takes up the entire display space.

As you know, new products come with a new system - iOS 8, in which there are not many visual changes. You can mark the new list of recent contacts in the multitasking panel; in the notification center there are two panels left - the notifications themselves and the list of events for today/tomorrow. There's now a feature to quickly respond to notifications without leaving the active application: for example, if you're listening to music and you receive a message, you no longer have to switch to another application—you can quickly respond from the notification panel.

What to choose? And is it worth replacing your old iPhone with a new one?

If you are the owner of an iPhone 5S or even an iPhone 5, and you think that the iPhone should be small and as convenient as possible for use with one hand, then we would not recommend immediately running for a new iPhone. Still, there are not so many revolutionary changes in the new products. Yes, the processor has become faster, in the future both voice-over-LTE and Apple Pay may work in Russia (although by the time the latter appears, the iPhone line will most likely be updated), but otherwise there are almost no noticeable changes in everyday use. If you have an older version of the iPhone, and you are not afraid of the prospect of using an older iPhone 6, changing your smartphone will bring significant improvements in speed, performance, camera quality and battery life.

If you're choosing between the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, we'd recommend choosing the iPhone 6 for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is more convenient - you can still use it with one hand, without having to relearn how to use a smartphone two-handed. In our opinion, 4.7 inches is almost the “reasonable limit” for the notorious ease of use with one hand.
