    Almost all owners of Android smartphones are faced with the fact that over time their device or tablet begins to slow down, its performance decreases, and it does not perform actions as quickly as before. There are ways to help your device and speed it up, because not everyone can afford to buy something brand new. In this article we will look at options for solving the problem both for beginners and for those who only have a high level of phone or tablet use.

    Ways to optimize the performance of your Android phone or tablet

    IMPORTANT: Please read the following instructions carefully! They will increase the speed of the device without using third-party applications and enabling root rights.

    1. Every Android has running services that need to be disabled. To do this, go to settings, click on “applications”, open the running (or running) tab. Next, we disable those services that we do not need.
    2. Disable GPS and geolocation, if you use them. This affects the rapid drainage of the battery and the functioning of other applications. By disabling these features, Android performance can be accelerated.
    3. Use memory card. Due to insufficient space on the phone or tablet, their operation becomes less fast, and even constant freezes are possible. We speed up the device by resetting all data to a flash card.
    4. Everyone has seen the function flipping through desktops on Android. Yes, this visually makes the phone/tablet prettier, but you can do without it. These actions will not load the processor and performance will increase. To do this, look for settings, select “about phone” there. You need to click on it 7 times, after which a notification will appear stating that you are now a developer. We return to the settings and see a new item “for developers”. Some versions of Android already have this item. Next, find the “animation speed” item and turn it off.
    5. Disable synchronization with various services, this also affects the performance of a smartphone or tablet. We go into the settings that are already familiar to us, then select the “accounts” item and turn off everything that we don’t use.
    6. We try not to use launchers, live wallpapers and other effects. This, of course, makes using the phone/tablet much more enjoyable, but it also greatly affects the speed of operation.
    7. If you don't really care about all the data (which, by the way, can be dumped onto a flash drive) that is on your Android, you can use a solution that is more suitable for advanced users. This flashing smartphone or return to factory settings. The second one is much easier. To do this, go to settings, look for “backup and reset” and select “master reset”. You will have to tinker with flashing the phone/tablet. By going to the settings and selecting “about phone”, you can see if there is a software version update for your gadgets. Otherwise, you can download the firmware from the Internet. Do all this strictly according to the instructions, otherwise you may simply end up with a “brick”.

    Technologies

    Just like computers, smartphones Over time they begin to slow down.

    But there are several simple ways to increase the speed of your iOS or Android device.

    Here are these simple tips:

    How to speed up your smartphone

    1. Update your operating system.

    If your smartphone is running slower than before, then the operating system it runs may not be the latest version. Newer versions of iOS or Android will allow your smartphone to improve its performance in terms of speed.

    But before updating, you should connect your phone to WiFi and save all the data. In addition, make sure that your smartphone supports the new version of the operating system, since very old devices, as well as ultra-budget smartphones, cannot be optimized.

    For iPhone

    “Settings” – “General” – “System Update” (Software Update).

    For Android devices

    "Settings" - "About Phone" - "System Updates" or "Software Updates" to check for updates.

    2. Disable or limit animations on your phone.

    Animating windows on a phone (when you move from one screen to another or from one application to another), of course, looks beautiful and impressive, but these details can slow down the smartphone, as they require additional system resources.

    For Android devices:

    Option 1: “Settings” – “Display” – “Animation”, then select “No animation”.

    Option 2: “Settings” – “For Developers”, find the items that are responsible for animation and select “Disable animation” or “No animation”.

    For iOS devices:

    "Settings" - "General" - "Universal Access" - "Reduce Motion". After that, try turning on or closing any application and then go to the multitasking panel. The animation did not turn off, but became different.

    3. Try to install only the most necessary applications.

    There are tons of programs and tools available in app stores, and it seems like you need a lot of them. But it's worth considering whether you should install this or that application, and whether you will really use it often.

    Any application uses the resources of your smartphone, and the fewer of them, the faster your device works.

    How to speed up your phone

    4. Get rid of unused apps.

    Remove apps you don't need or rarely use. This can be done by opening the application list. Any application can be restored if you decide to return it. Programs and games occupy the device's memory, so the fewer of them, the faster the device works.

    5. Get rid of widgets on your smartphone screen.

    The programs you install on your home screen may be useful, but they can seriously slow down your phone. Many widgets run regularly in the background, looking for new information or updates. If this or that widget on your phone’s home screen is not very important to you, just delete it.

    6. Don't use "Live Wallpaper".

    This is a nice feature, but just like widgets on a smartphone screen, it eats up not only the device's RAM, but also its battery. Over time, “live wallpapers” will begin to seriously slow down your smartphone. You should also refrain from using bright, multi-colored pictures on the screen - ideally the screen should be black.

    How to speed up a smartphone on Android

    7. Disable autorun of unnecessary programs.

    For Android: "Settings" - "Applications" - "Running services" or "Settings" - "Manage applications" - "Running". See which programs you don't want to start automatically - stop them and restart your phone. To stop different services on your phone, you can use one of the process managers in the app store.

    By disabling autorun of unnecessary programs, the overall performance of your smartphone will increase.

    8. Automatically clear your messengers after 30 days.

    Most smartphone users don't even think about cleaning up junk in their various messaging apps. If you have accumulated more than 1 gigabyte of text messages that are slowing down your phone, then you should think about clearing the messenger.

    Luckily for iPhone owners, you can enable the iMessage app to clear messages every 30 days (Settings – Messages – Keep Messages). But if you want to save all messages, then it is better to store them in archived form in the cloud (iCloud).

    On Android devices, you will have to delete messages manually. However, there is a feature in your phone settings that allows you to get rid of old messages when your phone is running low on space.

    9. Turn off automatic app updates.

    For devices onAndroid

    Google Play has a mechanism that automatically checks the versions of installed applications. If it finds a newer version, it automatically (in the background) updates the application to the new version. Such an update service requires some RAM resources.

    You can turn off auto-update and update all or specific applications manually. To do this you need to: go to Google Play – “Settings” and uncheck “Notifications” and “Update automatically”.

    For devices oniOS

    "Settings" - "General" - "Content Update".

    After this, you will see all the applications that are updating in the background. Go through the list of applications and disable those that you don't need. This step will not only speed up your phone, but will save some battery power.

    How to speed up your smartphone

    10. Disable GPS and geolocation.

    For devices on iOS

    There are apps that can only work if they continuously track the location of the phone owner, even when he is not using them. They can greatly slow down your smartphone, and to disable them, go to “Settings” – “Privacy” – “Location Services”. This will open a list of all applications that are associated with location sensors. In the desired applications, activate the "When used" or "Never" option.

    For Android devices

    If you do not want to use your phone as a navigator, it is better to turn off GPS. To do this, go to “Settings” – “Coordinates” (or “Location”) and uncheck all the boxes.

    To increase the speed of your iPhone, you can also do a hard reset of the device. This reboot rids the phone of temporary and cached files. To start such a reboot, press and hold the Home button for a while (until the Apple logo appears). On iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models, this is done using the volume button.

    How to speed up your phone on Android and iOS

    12. Task manager.

    Every smartphone has a built-in Task Manager, which allows you to close any running applications that you don’t need at that moment. Closing an application means that it is unloaded from RAM, which means the smartphone will work faster. But you can download a separate Task Manager created by a third-party developer.

    13. Clear application and browser cache.

    For Android devices

    To clear the cache, go to “Settings” – “Applications” – “Manage applications”. Once you've clicked on the app, go to its properties and look for "Clear cache." In this way, you get rid of outdated data, which in turn speeds up applications.

    Google Play has a large number of task managers with which you can manage your applications, disable unused programs and clear the cache. You can download the Clean Master application - it is convenient because it has Russian, it is understandable and it can perform many different functions, just like a Swiss army knife.

    For iOS devices

    The iPhone doesn't have a cache clearing feature for certain apps, which means it's best to download and install a third-party app. An excellent option is the Battery Doctor app (also available on Google Play), which, by the way, is free. After downloading and installing this application, open the icon on your smartphone screen and you can start cleaning.

    Go to the tab that contains the cache and confirm the deletion. It's also worth noting that Battery Doctor allows you to enter your smartphone's memory and you can monitor how the free space is filling up. In addition, you can delete applications that you have not used for a long time.

    You should not launch this application too often, since iOS itself is capable of handling most active processes.

    How to speed up your phone

    14. Do a hard reset to factory settings.

    If you have tried all the methods and nothing has produced significant results, you will have to return the device to factory settings. This will allow the phone to return to its original state (when it left the factory). But be aware that such a reboot will erase all data from the phone, so save all photos, music, contacts, applications and important files in advance. But this method will also rid the phone of excess garbage.

    For iOS devices

    “Settings” – “General” – “Reset”. Click Erase All Content and Settings and confirm your password. You can also reset the settings to factory defaults through iTunes: “Settings” – “General” – scroll to the “Reset” tab. Next, either “Reset settings” (deleting all data except files) or “Reset content and settings” (deleting all information).

    For Android devices

    "Menu" - "Settings" - "Backup and reset" - scroll to the very bottom to the "Reset settings" item (in some smartphones it is called "Reset phone settings" or "Master reset" or "Erase all data").

    The Android operating system is gaining more and more popularity today, gaining registration in a wide variety of devices, from the simplest phones to multimedia set-top boxes and tablets. However, these devices do not always have the most modern and powerful hardware, so the issue of optimizing and accelerating Android is very relevant for many. Therefore, we would like to introduce you to several proven ways to increase system performance, as well as common myths on this topic.

    First of all, you need to understand that Android is fundamentally different from Windows, so the methods of optimization and system acceleration that you are familiar with do not work there. However, this does not stop some scammers who actively offer various optimizers, defragmenters and accelerators. Let's take a look at which methods really make a difference.

    Basic level

    1. Disable live wallpapers. Yes, it's beautiful, I know. Brag to your friends and mom, show it to your girlfriend, and then it’s better to put a regular picture, because all these floating fish and clouds really take up system resources.

    2. Remove unnecessary widgets and icons. Each widget on your desktop consumes several megabytes of much-needed RAM. Look at them critically and unload the excess.

    3. Remove unnecessary applications. Google Play has so many good programs, most of which are completely free. Few people can resist installing a dozen or two “just in case,” “it will come in handy later.” However, some of these programs add widgets, run background processes, and are therefore unnecessary resource hogs. Leave only what you really need.

    4. Try a different browser. Android's built-in browser is quite good, but for slower devices Opera Mini may be preferable, as it consumes significantly less resources. Also try Firefox or Dolphin, these browsers can make browsing the web much faster.

    Advice for advanced users (administrator rights required).

    These tips require understanding and sometimes involve some risk, so they are addressed primarily to experienced users who are not afraid to experiment.

    1. Overclock your device. Just like a regular computer, your phone or tablet can be overclocked, that is, the processor frequency can be increased. A popular way to do this is SetCPU. Before making a decision, think carefully about all the pros and cons (increased heat generation, decreased autonomy, etc.).

    2. Try the new firmware. While your device manufacturer may be slow to update the firmware, you can always try using a custom build that's optimized and customized for your phone or tablet. In case of failure, you can always return to the “proprietary” system.

    3. Set up automatic start of programs. On a rooted device, it is possible to use programs like Autostarts, with which you can remove unnecessary processes from the list of autostarts.

    Erroneous methods

    1. Defragmentation. Android devices do not require defragmentation. Accordingly, all applications that offer speedup in this way are nothing more than a scam.

    2. Applications for task management (Task Manager). Theoretically, all these “task killers” do a useful job - they kill background tasks and free up RAM. However, in reality everything is completely different. The Android operating system uses a rather complex memory management system that is significantly different from Windows. Those applications with which you are not currently interacting are in a “frozen” state, which allows you to restore their state almost instantly the first time you access them. If you unload them from memory, then their subsequent launch is, on the contrary, slower, so that the overall responsiveness of the system decreases.

    What proven ways to speed up Android do you know? Share with our readers in the comments?

    It’s very annoying when you buy a fairly expensive high-end smartphone, but there are still certain glitches in the interface performance. Not to mention the “middle class”. There are different ways to “speed up” a gadget. And even if none of them are magical, they still bring certain results.

    Update to the latest version of Android

    The latest version of the software often contains various fixes and general improvements that help your Android device run faster. Very often the update arrives over the air (OTA) and you can update automatically. It is only important to check the possibility of an update. Go to Settings -> About device -> Software update and check. By the way, similar logic applies to applications.

    Clean up your home screen

    If you have chosen a beautiful, exciting, but always demanding live wallpaper, it is better to replace it with a static image. Also clear space from unused icons and limit widgets. The less cluttered your home screen is, the better in terms of productivity.

    Remove unused apps

    Why do programs that are used extremely rarely or not used at all take up space on your device? Go to Settings -> Applications and switch to the All tab. Carefully review the entire list and remove everything that is not needed. If questions arise at certain points, use Google to search for the purpose of a particular utility. By the way, if you don’t want to delete it, you can disable applications. In this case, they can simply be turned back on in the future. Also look at the "Running Applications" tab - some of them may be running all the time and seriously affect performance.

    Optimize Animation

    You can easily make yours smoother by shortening or turning off the animation. To do this, you need to enable Developer Options. Don't know how? Very simple. Go to Settings -> About device, go down to the build number and tap on it 7 times, after which previously hidden options will automatically open. Go back to the previous menu and you will see "Developer Options" under "System". In them, find the animation settings and change them as you wish.

    Clear application cache

    Many people are concerned about the question - how to speed up Android? Cached app data is supposed to help apps load faster, but often the amount of cached data becomes so large that the process is reversed. In addition, the device may contain application data that is no longer used or has even been previously deleted. Clean up such garbage - it definitely won’t get any worse! Go to Settings -> Applications and switch to the All tab, where you can select a specific program and select Clear cache. You can also use third-party tools like .

    Turn off/reduce auto-sync

    On tablets and smartphones, people use a lot of accounts in various services, and almost all of them are configured to automatically synchronize with their servers in the background. All of this seriously impacts performance, not to mention battery life. Go to Settings and find Auto-sync in Accounts and simply turn it off. Of course, manipulation is not possible for all applications, but only for some. Choose for yourself.

    Wipe cache partition

    The cache partition operates separately from the application data cache and stores temporary files. It is not only possible to clean it, but necessary. To do this, you need to boot into Recovery mode. The algorithm for getting into it varies depending on the device - you can find information on yours on Google. Do it!

    Try a third party launcher

    Some aspects of customization, which are often found even among large developers, very often cause headaches. If you want to change the look of your device, get new features, and improve overall stability, try third-party launchers. For example, Nova Launcher, Apex Launcher and others. Experiment with the settings and you will find that your device can do a lot of new things.

    Return to factory settings

    This is a very drastic step, but a general reset to factory settings helps many people if they need their smartphone to work faster. This way, you can get rid of any accumulated junk, but you will have to sacrifice more than just that. Before you begin, save all important data and settings so that you can easily restore them later. And then go to Settings -> Backup and reset -> Reset to factory settings.

    Try to overclock the gadget

    There are often situations when gadgets on the same chip and with approximately the same parameters work completely differently. The fact is that some manufacturers artificially lower the performance of the same processor in order to increase battery life. Try overclocking tools like SetCPU or Android Overclock, but proceed with extreme caution.

    Are you running out of battery power? Tired of slow applications? Don't despair and don't rush to buy a new smartphone. Even a very slow gadget can be made to work faster and significantly increase battery life. In this article I will talk about many techniques that will allow you to do this.

    Let me make a reservation right away: to make your smartphone work really fast, you will have to reflash it. There is no other way - standard smartphone firmware is often cumbersome, filled with useless manufacturer software, and a lot of Google applications that you hardly need. Manually clearing out all this garbage is extremely inconvenient and can lead to problems with your smartphone.

    In addition, I recommend not installing the GApps package on top of the firmware, which includes the Play Store and Google services, which are primarily needed for push notifications and synchronizing your contacts. We’ll talk about this in more detail in the section “Are GApps necessary?”, but for now I’ll just say that the Play Store can be replaced with an alternative application store, and contacts can be saved and restored on a smartphone without GApps.

    Test subject for acceleration and optimization

    As a test sample we will use the wonderful Chinese phone 4Good Light B100 with depressing technical characteristics:

    • processor: Mediatek MT6737M, four Cortex a53 cores at 1.1 GHz, Mali T720 video accelerator (one core 550 MHz);
    • RAM: 1 GB (907 MB excluding core memory). Write/read speed 1922 Mbit/s;
    • ROM: 8 GB (data 3.59 GB, system 2.91 GB). Read speed 123 Mbps, write speed 35 Mbps;
    • battery: 1500 mA ∙ h.

    Please note that the figures given in the article for the amount of RAM consumed were obtained on this particular smartphone. In smartphones with a different amount of RAM, the numbers will be different, since Android regulates the memory available to applications based on its total amount.

    Creating a backup of contacts and calendar

    So, if you choose to live without GApps, be sure to back up your contacts and calendar events. Instructions for removing contacts:

    1. Open contacts.google.com.
    2. On the “Main Menu” panel, click “Export”.
    3. Select the vCard format and click “Export”.

    And this is how you can pull out calendar events:

    1. Open calendar.google.com.
    2. Click the gear at the top right, and then go to settings.
    3. In the left menu, click “Import and Export”.
    4. Click on the “Export” button and download the archive.

    To restore contacts after installing the firmware, just open the Contacts application, then go to settings, click Import and select the previously saved file. To restore calendar events, you will have to install a third-party calendar (more on that later).

    Firmware installation

    Let's select the firmware to install. The most suitable would be AOSP or LineageOS. Often the latter turns out to be the only custom firmware for little-known smartphones. Installation algorithm:

    1. Unlock the bootloader. There is no universal recipe here. Some smartphones can be unlocked officially, some only by hacking the bootloader, others cannot be unlocked in any way (hello, BlackBerry), and the bootloaders of Chinese nonames are usually not blocked at all.
    2. Install TWRP. Instructions specific to your phone can be found online.
    3. We find the required firmware by searching, put it on the memory card and flash it. We are looking for instructions there.

    If you still decide to install GApps, then the best option is GApps Pico. This is a minimal set of Google applications, containing only Google services and the Play Store. They are installed in the same way as the firmware itself; you can download it on the Open GApps website.

    Are GApps necessary?

    GApps- These are the Play Store and Google services that ensure the interaction of the Play Store, Google applications and third-party applications with various Google APIs. The Google API provides features such as location determination via cell towers and Wi-Fi, automated login to various services, antivirus with a database and auto-scanning, speech recognition, synchronization of contacts and calendar with Google servers, instant delivery of push notifications and some others.

    Manufacturers of Google certified devices pre-install GApps on the smartphone by default. Therefore, almost any Android smartphone is sold with a bunch of Google software, including YouTube, Gmail, Google Books and much more. We installed clean firmware, and we don’t have these applications. But there are no Google services either. Is this good or bad?

    The question is controversial. On the one hand, Google services love to eat up battery power and constantly hang in RAM. On the other hand, we will not have a market, and many modern applications (messengers, email, social network clients) will suddenly stop showing push notifications or begin to consume battery power.

    This happens because push notifications come through the Google server, and the smartphone communicates with it through the services of the same Google. Applications have no choice but to either not receive notifications at all, or connect to their own server (Telegram does this), which can lead to increased battery consumption.

    So if you are going to use a lot of instant messengers, email programs, news services with alerts and other similar tinsel, definitely use GApps. If, out of all social services, you only use Telegram, then giving up GApps will save battery power and RAM. Well, as a bonus, Google will suddenly stop monitoring your phone (see Google Surveillance).

    Choosing an app store

    If you installed the firmware without GApps, you need an alternative app store. Don't hesitate to choose F-Droid. This is a relatively large application repository containing exclusively free and open source software.

    Most of the programs here are compact, not greedy for RAM and battery. They do not contain advertising and do not require Google services to operate. However, this market has serious drawbacks: there are no ratings or reviews, and there are applications with older versions than in the main stores. Well, the most important difference: software written with sheer enthusiasm is often not very functional and not very attractive from an aesthetic point of view.

    Just in case, install Yalp Store. The program allows you to download, install and update any applications from the Play Store. Just do not add your main Google account to the Yalp Store; downloading applications from the market through an unofficial client may result in a ban.

    Application in F-Droid and Yalp Store

    Choosing lightweight software for weak smartphones

    In the age of bloated software with a lot of unnecessary functionality, it is difficult to find simple, fast and not overcomplicated applications. But if you try hard and look in the right places, you can find very good software.

    Launcher

    Browser

    Reading the letter and setting up K-9 Mail

    Optimizing Android by removing garbage

    Android comes with many pre-installed applications and services. The system launches some of them automatically after loading or in response to some event. We don’t always need this, so it’s better to get rid of such software.

    • email /system/app/Email ;
    • Exchange support: /system/app/Exchange2 ;
    • weather services /system/app/YahooWeatherProvider , /system/priv-app/WeatherManagerService and /system/priv-app/WeatherProvider (attention: the built-in weather widget will stop working);
    • warning the population about natural disasters: /system/priv-app/CellBroadcastReceiver ;
    • calendar /system/app/Calendar ;
    • keyboard /system/app/LatinIME (delete if you installed a third-party one);
    • system for checking OTA updates /system/priv-app/Updater.

    It was a soft option. Here's a more extreme one:

    • boot animation: /system/media/bootanimation.zip. After deletion, the standard Android animation or black screen will be played;
    • preset ringtones, notifications and alarms: /system/media/audio in the ringtones, notifications, alarms folders. If you wish, you can clean out the ui folder if you don’t need system sounds;
    • languages of the primitive voice engine Pico TTS: /system/tts/lang_pico. Google's voice engine will not be affected;
    • offline languages /system/usr/srec/config/ , they can be downloaded if needed.

    Other LineageOS system applications that can be safely removed:

    • stock web browser: /system/app/Jelly ;
    • calculator: /system/app/ExactCalculator ;
    • terminal emulator: /system/app/Terminal ;
    • music player: /system/priv-app/Eleven ;
    • stock gallery /system/priv-app/Gallery2 ;
    • initial setup manager: /system/priv-app/LinageSetupWizard ;
    • annoying SIM card menu: /system/app/Stk;
    • voice recorder and screen recording: /system/priv-app/Recorder ;
    • clock widget: /system/app/LockClock ;
    • stock launcher: /system/priv-app/Trebuchet;
    • GPS test from the engineering menu: /system/app/YGPS;
    • program for receiving and sending SMS: /system/app/messaging ;
    • Google speech synthesizer: /system/app/PicoTts ;
    • clock application (timer, stopwatch...): /system/app/LockClock ;
    • easter egg: /system/app/EasterEgg ;
    • photo frame: /system/app/PhotoTable ;
    • live wallpaper: /system/app/LiveWallpapersPicker.

    About build.prop modifications and instructions from the forums

    The /system/build.prop file is present in any Android firmware and stores a large number of low-level settings, as well as information about the device and the firmware itself. The build.prop file is usually used to optimize the device: there are many instructions on the Internet about what changes should be made to it.

    But don't rush to do them. Forum user xda-developers did some research and discovered some unexpected information. It turned out that about twenty settings recommended on the forums were not mentioned anywhere in the Android source code, which means that they were simply made up.

    Instead of a conclusion

    Even a relatively weak smartphone with the right applications and settings can look quite good compared to more expensive devices. To prove this, let's compare the performance of our 4Good Light B100 after tuning with the 2016 flagship Samsung Galaxy S7 G930F, which uses standard applications mixed with Google programs. All programs were launched from a cold start, that is, immediately after the device was rebooted.
