How to set your own ringtone on iPhone 4,4s,5,5s,5c,6,6+

In this video I’ll tell you how to install your own track, downloaded from the Internet, to a call or SMS on an iPhone.

Despite the fact that iPhones have long been a part of the lives of many people, setting your own ringtone is still difficult. And the point is not that smartphones have become so complicated that a person who holds an Apple smartphone for the first time in his life may find it difficult to understand all its functions.

Almost everyone knows the general concepts about smartphones - for example, even beginners know that you can set your own melody or ringtone to a call. For experienced users, setting your favorite song as a ringtone is not a problem, but for those who have not yet learned all the intricacies of the iOS system, detailed instructions will be very useful.

It doesn't matter what generation of iPhone you have - 4S, 5, 5S, 6, or any other, the process is the same for all smartphones. Replacing the standard ringtone with your own occurs in two stages:

How to download a ringtone to iPhone memory

The first thing you need to do is get a suitable music file. Music files have various extensions - .mp3, .aac, .wav, etc. But the standard ringtone format for iPhone is .m4r, you can’t put another one.

A ringtone is a short melody, no more than 40 seconds long. On the one hand, it makes no sense to play an entire song on a call, but on the other, this opportunity is limited by software. You can either download a suitable file from the Internet, or create it yourself by cutting out the most beautiful fragment from your favorite song.

There are several ways to make a ringtone for an iPhone - buy it from the iTunes Store, download a ready-made one from the Internet, cut it on special sites online, use a program designed for cutting music, like iTunes, or prepare it on the iPhone. We talked about this in detail in the step-by-step instructions “How to create a ringtone for iPhone”.

There are two ways to download the resulting file to your iPhone:

    1. Using iTunes;
    2. Using a Windows or Mac file manager.

Downloading a melody to your smartphone using iTunes

Download and install iTunes from apple.com/ru/itunes/download, then connect your device to your PC or laptop and launch the program.

In the main window menu, go to the “File” tab and click on the “Add to Library” item. You can also use the hotkey combination Ctrl+O for Windows and cmd+O for Mac.

In the window that opens, go to the folder on your hard drive where the ringtone is located and select it. It will appear in iTunes, in the Sounds menu.

On the main page of the program, go to the “Sounds” menu of your iPhone.

The icon will only be available when the phone is connected to the computer.

Select the selected ringtone and check the “Synchronize sounds” checkbox. Choose whether all files should be synchronized or only selected ones.

Apply the changes. After this, the contents of the media library (and, accordingly, your ringtone) are synchronized with the iPhone, that is, they are loaded into the smartphone’s memory. To view sounds, click on the side menu shown with the lower red arrow in the screenshot above.

Downloading a ringtone to iPhone through a file manager

In addition to iTunes, you can use a file manager to download melody to your smartphone’s memory. There is no need to synchronize, and you can copy not only music, but also any other files to your iPhone.

There are many third-party file managers you can use. One of the best is iFunBox, which is easy to use and is suitable for any device on the iOS platform - both jailbroken iPhones and devices without jailbreak. You can download it from the author’s website here: i-funbox.com.

To send a ringtone to your smartphone using a file manager, connect your iPhone to your computer and do the following:

Download to your computer, install and run the program. In the manager's return menu, select the item marked "Quick Toolbox".

In the very first section of loading files and information “Export Files and Data”, select the user ringtone icon “User Ringtone”.

In the window that opens, click on the long blue button and select the desired file on your computer’s hard drive. After this, the melody will be transferred to the smartphone’s memory. All that remains is to install it on the call.

So, the ringtone was downloaded to the phone and became available for installation through the settings menu. There are only a couple of steps left:
Open settings and go to the “Sounds” menu, “Vibration sounds and patterns” section, “Ringtone” item.

In the list of available ringtones, find the downloaded one and check the box next to its name.

To make sure that it is really her, the smartphone will start playing sound. It doesn’t matter whether your sound is turned off or not.

That's it! This instruction is suitable for iPhone 4, 5, 6 versions, and allows you to quickly set your ringtone for a call.

If you are unable to do something on your own, then we advise you to contact emergency computer help - pchelp24.com, reasonable prices, experienced specialists, free call and diagnostics.

This is not news for advanced users, but for beginners this information will be a discovery, and I hope it will be useful.

The iTunes mentioned above contains all the required functions to obtain ringtones in the format we need. Let's look at practical examples of how to change an MP3 file into the m4r format for iPhone; it is this format that can be recognized by your device.

    Adding music to your library

I hope you took care to download the music for the ringtone on your PC in advance? To quickly go to Windows Explorer and select downloaded music, use Ctrl+O, this reduces the time of your actions.

Selecting a fragment for a ringtone

After adding a melody to the program, it should be trimmed. Right-click on the desired melody, then click details.

Then, in the parameters, cut out the desired segment that will be used for the ringtone.

An important condition is that a part of a musical composition should be cut to a duration of up to 39 seconds, no more.

You should decide in advance at what second your music will start, and already set this value when selecting a fragment. Don't forget to save your changes.

    Starting the conversion process

All versions of iTunes have almost identical features. But, in the latest version of iTunes, it will not be possible to convert from the library window using the context menu to create a melody in AAC formats. Let's proceed as follows:

    • Click on the newly cropped fragment to select it;
    • Open the file tab;
    • Find the option to create a new version;
    • Click on ACC format.

The conversion of the selected fragment will start, upon completion you will see another file, the length of this file will correspond to your settings.

How to change the AAC extension to the M4r format?

You already understand that Apple smartphones use a special ringtone format with the m4r extension for ringtones. This means you need to change the AAC format to M4r, required for ringtones on Apple devices.

Right-click on the file and select show in explorer. Rename the file, replacing the extension with m4r.

In the meantime, go back to iTunes, click “view”, select the “sound” section in the media file types, drag the file saved on your computer into it.

    Sync iPhone with iTunes

After completing the steps with the future ringtone, you need to connect your Apple smartphone to the computer and synchronize between the iPhone and the computer.

The last step is to put the downloaded ringtone on your iPhone. Now it's not difficult anymore. You can set a new melody in the smartphone settings; it will already be visible in media files. For those who do not know how to do this, I give instructions.

Disconnect the iPhone from the PC, enter the “settings” of the iPhone, go to “sounds”, activate the “ringtone” item, select the newly downloaded ringtone from the list. Now you have a new ringtone.

    Services for free ringtone creation

Now let's talk about how to create music for iPhone much faster and easier. There are many online tools that make setting iPhone ringtones very quickly. You can find such a service through the search bar of your browser.

Upload the music you like, move the limiting marker to the desired duration (but no more than 39 seconds), click “Create a ringtone for iPhone”, then “Trim”, then all you have to do is download the finished file, place it in the iTunes library, “Sounds” tab.

    Search, choose, create new melodies.

Changing the default ringtone in the iOS operating system is a little more complicated than on . It is not clear why, but Apple developers did not want to provide an easy opportunity for owners of Apple devices to show their individuality.

Let's not talk too much and get down to business. Let's try to create step-by-step instructions with screenshots for changing the standard ringtone on an iPhone running iOS 10.3.1.

First, download the musical composition or song that you will play on your iPhone. Then launch iTunes on your PC and connect your smartphone to it.

In an open window iTunes select a tab "Songs" and simply drag and drop the desired music file there:

In the new window, you need to set an interval of approximately 30-40 seconds. The operating system simply recognizes longer tracks as a regular song or the like. Thus, you need to enter the beginning and end of the melody in numbers. Then click “OK” in the lower right.

Note: it is better to set the ringtone duration for iPhone to 30 seconds.

Then you need to go to the menu “File / Convert / Create a version in AAC format”. It is this format that corresponds to the ringtone for the iOS operating system and, accordingly, the iPhone:

The new “cut” ringtone will appear immediately below the original and will look like this:

Right-click on it (RMB) and in the context menu that appears, select “Show in Windows Explorer”:

We need this procedure in order to change the extension of the musical ringtone we created, the one we “cut”.

You can go to the “Start/Control Panel/All Control Panel Items/Folder Options/View” menu and uncheck the checkbox next to “Hide extensions for known file types.” Click OK:

Previously, we clicked “Show in Windows Explorer” - we return to this window and see our future custom ringtone for iPhone. Now you can see the extension of this music file and change it to the one that matches the iPhone ringtone extension.

Old file with extension .m4a change to .m4r. Save the changes. Go to the iTunes window and look for the Songs/Media Library tab when the smartphone is connected to the PC. Just drag our new ringtone into this window:

This is where the dancing with the tambourine practically ends. You just need to synchronize your iPhone with iTunes installed on your PC and that’s it. And don’t forget to change the standard ringtone to your own in the menu of the phone itself.

This concludes our step-by-step instructions with screenshots for changing the melody (ringtone) on iPhone. We changed the ringtone on an iPhone 5S 16 GB with the iOS 10.3 operating system.

Ringtones for iPhone have not lost their relevance, because changing the ringtone brings a little variety to our everyday life. The other day I decided to create a new melody for myself and put it on my iPhone’s ringtone, but it turned out that the updated iTunes has minor changes in the interface, which made the task a little more complicated. If you make and install ringtones in outdated versions of iTunes, then read the instructions here - “”. Well, we will look into the 12th version of Tuna.

For convenience, the instructions are divided into two sections:

Now, on the computer, we look for our music file in MP3 format, click on it with the mouse and drag it into the music library (3).

Our music file has appeared in the iTunes library. Now right-click on it and select – Information (4).

In the window that opens, look for - Parameters. Set the start to 0:00, end to 0:30 and click OK. Thus, the length of our iPhone ringtone will be 30 seconds. I tried to make a ringtone lasting 3 minutes, iTunes did not let it through, it gave the following:

"The ringtone was not copied to the iPhone because its duration was too long."

Therefore, 30 seconds is the best option.

We select our music track by clicking on the file in iTunes with the mouse, the track is highlighted in blue. Now we are looking for the tab:

    • File – Convert – Create AAC version

I don’t know why Apple hid this function so far, it used to be simpler - you right-clicked on the file and converted, now the conversion path has become a little longer.

After a couple of seconds, we get our 30-second file, with the same name as the original file. Right-click on this 30-second melody and select – Show in Windows Explorer (Show in Finder, click on Mac OS users).

In the window that opens, we see our ringtone file, but still in M4A format; we rename the M4A extension to the M4R extension. If you have difficulty renaming an extension or the extension is not displayed, then look at the instructions - “”.

If you don’t feel comfortable creating ringtones in iTunes, you can use the following services and programs:

After which you can use the second part of this instruction to synchronize these ringtones to your Apple iPhone.

Set a ringtone for an iPhone call

The renamed melody in M4R format is our created ringtone for iPhone. Essentially, the ringtone is ready, now you need to put it in the iPhone by synchronizing it.

Using the mouse, grab the finished M4R file, drag it into iTunes and drop it directly into the program. Before doing this, it is advisable to transfer this ringtone to some folder of your own (and drag it from it to iTunes), since it may still be useful in the future. There is another way to add ringtones to iTunes -.

To make sure that the M4R ringtone was successfully added to iTunes, do the following: at the top of the program, where we had the “Music” section, click and select “Sounds”. If there is no “Sounds” section, then in the same context menu, from the bottom, click – “Edit menu”, check the “Sounds” checkbox and click Finish.

In iTunes 12.7, the developers removed the Edit Menu button, so some users cannot enable the Sounds section. Now the ringtone is added to the iTunes program by dragging the ringtone in M4r format. You can drag the ringtone - .

Once in the Sounds section, we should see our 30-second file. If we see it and it is there, then the ringtone has been successfully added to iTunes. Sometimes, despite correctly performing the steps above, the ringtone does not appear in the Sounds section, this happened in iTunes under MacOS; deleting a 30-second file from the Songs section, which apparently somehow interfered with the loading of M4R, helped. But when deleting this file, you need to select the button – Keep File.

If your M4R ringtone does not appear in Sounds, then there may be problems with the original MP3 music file, in which case try other MP3 music files. Or try making a ringtone not in iTunes, but using other services and links to which we provided.

If ringtones appear in iTunes, in the Sounds section, then put them in the iPhone:

    1. We take a USB cable and use it to connect the iPhone to the computer. In the top bar of iTunes, click on the iPhone icon that appears
    2. In the left sidebar under the iPhone itself, click the section – Sounds
    3. Check the box - Synchronize sounds
    4. Choose: All sounds or Selected sounds
    5. At the bottom of iTunes, click Apply or Sync

We wait until all stages of synchronization have completed and iTunes will record the ringtone into the iPhone. Then we take the phone, go to Settings - Sounds - Ringtone, and we see our ringtone is the very first one in the list.

If you want to turn on iPhone flashes when there is an incoming call, which will accompany your melody, then read -.

If you decide to delete ringtones from your iPhone, then read –. Well, if you still have questions about ringtones for iPhone or you want the same beautiful ringtone name as in the last picture, then welcome to ours - “”.
