    Adding pagination

    To add pagination, select the “Insert” tab in the ribbon menu and go to the “Header and Footer” area. Using the “Page Number” button, we select the format for displaying the numbering - at the bottom, at the top of the page, or in the margins - and use one of the proposed layout options.

    Through the same menu you can remove page numbering if it is not needed. In addition, advanced settings are available here in the “Page Number Format” option. Here you can choose to display numbers or choose letters or Roman numerals instead. You can include chapter numbering. And most importantly, you can specify from what date the page numbering will begin, which is important if you are supplementing previously printed material or using division into sections in the document.

    Numbering on individual pages

    It often happens that not all pages require numbering. A classic example is the title page. But sometimes documents are diluted with illustrations, where numbering is also not needed. All this is available in the Word editor.

    Let's create a title page for our document. And let's add page numbering, say, at the bottom of the page. By default, the page number is added everywhere, and to remove it from the title page, go to the “Design” menu in the “Options” area and fill in the “Special header for the first page” checkbox. The number of the first page is no longer displayed, but on all subsequent pages it is, starting with number two.

    Now let's add a couple of pages with illustrations in the middle of the document. Page numbering has also been added here. To remove it, we use division of the document into sections. To do this, place the cursor at the end of the first part with the text and select “Layout” – “Breaks” – “Next Page” from the menu. This command adds a section break.

    By default, page numbering continues in the second section. And if we checked the “Special footer for the first page” checkbox, then the first page of the new section will also not be numbered. If we have only one page with an illustration, then these actions will be quite enough. If there are several such pages, then at the end of the last page with illustrations we will create a new section, and in the section with pictures we will simply remove the numbering.

    Note: To prevent the numbering from being removed from all sections, it is necessary to remove the connection between sections - to do this, select the footer in the corresponding section and, through the “Designer” menu in the “Transitions” area, click the “Same as in the previous section” button (it should become inactive).

    Our illustration pages are no longer numbered. What about the second part of the text? In order to return the number to the first page of this section, double-click the mouse to select the header and footer area and deactivate the “Special footer for the first page” checkbox.

    Finally, if we want pages with illustrations not to be counted in the total number of pages, then go to the “Page Number Format” menu, select the “start with” option and enter a specific number from which the numbering of the section we have chosen should begin. Thus, in our example, the first section ended on the third page, the second section with pictures was not numbered, and the third section began with the number four.

    Whenever you prepare any important documents, for example, legal papers, or write, as a student, a final qualifying work or a regular coursework, you inevitably face the problem: how to number sheets in Word in accordance with the official requirements that are presented to you in accordance with approved norms and rules.

    It should be noted that the procedure for entering numbers in versions of Word before 2007 is somewhat different from those in modern versions of the program.

    How to number sheets in Word 2007 and later

    Continuous numbering

    In this version of the utility, the so-called continuous numbering. This word means that if you do not set the settings you need manually, then numbers will be entered starting from the first sheet and then in ascending order. How is continuous numbering done? Go through the following steps in sequence:

    Sometimes situations arise when you do not need all the numbers in order, but need to start numbering, for example, with the number two or three. What should you do in this case?

    To make numbering out of order, repeat steps 1 and 2 of the above list. Then find the item in the drop-down menu called “Page Number Format” and click on it. You will be presented with a settings window in which you will need to find the phrase “Start with” and set a number that will be the starting number of your pages.

    How to number sheets in Word 2003

    Numbering in order

    Placing numbers in older versions of the Word program it is performed a little differently than in later versions. To make numbering, use the following algorithm:

      1. Check the box next to “Number on first page.”

    In case if you need the first sheet to have something other than the number one, and any other number, for example, two or ten, then follow sequentially steps 1 and 2 from the above algorithm of actions, then find the tab called “Format” in the window that opens in front of you and go to it. Find the item called “Page Numbering” and set the number from which you need to start counting in your document.

    Numbering without title page

    To number not all pages and leave the title page without a number, follow these steps:

    1. At the top of the software window, find a menu item called “Insert” and click on it using the left button of your mouse.
    2. Find the item called “Page Numbers” and click on it.
    3. You will see a window in front of you where you will need to set several settings:
      1. "Position". Thanks to this item, you can tell the program where it should put the numbers: at the top or at the bottom of the page.
      2. "Alignment". Determines the exact position of the number. Valid options: center, right, left, outside or inside.
      3. Do not check the box next to the phrase “Number on the first page.” As a result, the top sheet will remain without a number, and the next one in order will be numbered two.

    Thus, one of the common tasks that users may encounter is the need to set page numbers in Word. Indeed, no matter what you do in this program, be it writing an essay, term paper or dissertation, report, book or regular, large text, you almost always need to number pages. Moreover, even in cases where you don’t really need it and no one demands it, it will be very difficult to work with these sheets in the future.

    Imagine that you decide to print this document on a printer - if you don’t staple it or staple it instantly, how will you then find the right page? If there are a maximum of 10 such pages, this, of course, is not a problem, but what if there are several dozen or hundreds of them? How much time will you spend organizing them if something happens?     1. Having opened the document that you want to number (or an empty one that you just plan to work with), go to the tab "Insert".

    How to number all pages in Word, except the title page?

    Most text documents in which you may need to number pages have a title page. This happens in essays, diplomas, reports, etc. The first page in this case acts as a kind of cover, which indicates the name of the author, title, name of the boss or teacher. Therefore, numbering the title page is not only not necessary, but also not recommended. By the way, many people use a corrector for this, simply covering up the number, but this is definitely not our method.

    So, to exclude the numbering of the title page, left-click twice on the number of this page (it should be the first).

    In the menu that opens at the top, find the section "Options", and in it put a tick opposite the item "Special footer for this page".

    The number on the first page will disappear, and page number 2 will now become page 1. Now you can work on the title page as you see fit, as needed, or in accordance with what is required of you.

    How to add numbering like “Page X of Y”?

    Sometimes, next to the current page number, you need to indicate the total number of pages in the document. To do this in Word, follow the instructions below:

    1. Click on the “Page Number” button located in the tab "Insert".

    2. From the drop-down menu, select the location where this number should appear on each page.

    Note: When selecting an item "Current location", the page number will be placed at the location where the cursor is located in the document.

    3. In the submenu of the item you selected, find the item "Page X of Y" select the required numbering option.

    4. To change the numbering style, in the tab "Constructor" located in the main tab "Working with headers and footers", find and click the button "Page number", where in the drop-down menu you should select "Page Number Format".

    5. Once you've selected the style you want, click "OK".

    6. Close the window for working with headers and footers by clicking on the outermost button on the control panel.

    7. The page will be numbered in the format and style you selected.

    How to add even and odd page numbers?

    Odd page numbers can be added to the right footer, and even page numbers can be added to the left footer. To do this in Word you need to do the following:

    1. Click on the odd page. This could be the first page of a document that you want to number.

    2. In a group "Header and footer", which is located in the tab "Constructor", click on the button "Footer".

    3. In the drop-down menu with lists of formatting options, find "Built-in" and then select "Aspect (odd page)".

    4. In the tab "Constructor" ("Working with headers and footers") check the box next to the item "Different headers and footers for even and odd pages".

    Advice: If you want to exclude the numbering of the first (title) page of the document, in the “Design” tab you need to check the box next to “Special header for the first page”.

    5. In the tab "Constructor" click the button "Forward"- This will move the cursor to the footer for even-numbered pages.

    6. Click "Footer" located in the same tab "Constructor".

    7. In the drop-down list, find and select "Aspect (even page)".

    How to number different sections?

    In large documents, it is often necessary to set different numbering for pages from different sections. For example, there should be no number on the title (first) page; pages with a table of contents should be numbered with Roman numerals ( I, II, III...), and the main text of the document must be numbered in Arabic numerals ( 1, 2, 3… ). We will tell you below how to number different formats on pages of different types in Word.

    1. First you need to display hidden symbols; to do this, you need to click the corresponding button on the control panel in the tab "Home". Thanks to this, you will be able to see the section breaks, but at this stage we just have to add them.

    2. Scroll the mouse wheel or use the slider on the right side of the program window to scroll down the first (title) page.

    3. In the tab "Layout" click on the button "Breaks", go to point "Section breaks" and select "Next page".

    4. This will make the title page the first section, and the rest of the document will become Section 2.

    5. Now go down to the end of the first page of Section 2 (in our case this will be used for the table of contents). Double-click on the bottom of the page to open the header and footer mode. A link will appear on the sheet "Same as previous section"- this is the connection that we have to remove.

    6. Having first made sure that the mouse cursor is located in the footer, in the tab "Constructor"(chapter "Working with headers and footers"), where you need to select "Same as previous section". This action will break the connection between the title section (1) and the table of contents (2).

    7. Scroll to the bottom of the last page of the table of contents (Section 2).

    8. Click on the button "Breaks" located in the tab "Layout" and under the point "Section breaks" select "Next page". Section 3 will appear in the document.

    9. With the mouse cursor in the footer, go to the tab "Constructor", where again you need to select "Same as previous section". This action will break the connection between Sections 2 and 3.

    10. Click anywhere in Section 2 (table of contents) to close the header/footer mode (or click the button on the control panel in Word), go to the tab "Insert", then find and click "Page number", where in the drop-down menu select "Bottom of the page". In the drop-down list, select "Easy number 2".

    11. Opening the tab "Constructor", press "Page number" then select from the drop-down menu "Page Number Format".

    12. In paragraph "Number format" select roman numerals ( i, ii, iii), then click "OK".

    13. Scroll down to the footer of the first page of the entire remaining document (Section 3).

    14. Open a tab "Insert", select "Page number", then "Bottom of the page" And "Easy number 2".

    Note: Most likely, the displayed number will be different from the number 1; to change this, you must follow the steps described below.

    15. The document page numbering will be changed and arranged in accordance with the necessary requirements.

    Page numbering in Word 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016

    In all versions older than Word 2003, numbering is the same. The screenshots below are based on Word 2017, but they will also work for older versions.

    To add numbering in an open document, go to the “Insert” tab. In the “Header and Footer” section, click “Page Number” and select a numbering position. In the screenshot below, I have chosen the footer location with centered placement.

    After this action, numbering will appear at the end of each page, as well as displaying a header and footer. To close the display of headers and footers, click the “Close Header and Footers Window” button.

    If desired, you can change the numbering format, for example, by making the numbers not Arabic, but Roman. To do this, again go to the “Insert” tab and in the “Page Numbers” item open “Page Number Format”.

    Here you can choose the appearance, as well as which number the numbering will begin with. Why this may be required you will find out in the next paragraph.

    Removing numbering from the title page

    In most educational institutions, one of the requirements for document formatting is the absence of numbering on the title (first) page. If you simply enable page numbering, as shown above, then the numbering will be on the first sheet. To start numbering from the first page, but not display it on the title page, do the following.

    Go to the “Layout” tab and click on the “Page Setup” link, as shown in the picture below.

    Go to the “Paper Sources” tab and check the “Distinguish between first page headers and footers” checkbox. After that, click OK.

    Now numbering is carried out as before, but its number is not displayed on the first page, in our case number 1.

    When you want the numbering not to be displayed on the first page (title page), but on the second so that it starts with the number 1, you need to set the numbering from 0 in the menu “Insert” - “Page Number” - “Page Number Format”. the first page will start with number 0 without display, and the second page will start with number 1, the third page with number 2 and so on.

    Numbering from the third page

    Let's complicate the task a little. We need the numbering to be present, but not displayed on the first and second pages. After all, the first page is usually the title page, the second can be a table of contents, where numbering is also not required.

    To number from the third page you will need to do an operation called “Page Break”. First, return all numbering settings to default if you have hidden the numbering display on the cover page. Let's assume that you currently have numbering enabled from the first page and the number 1 is displayed on the title page, the number 2 on the second page, and so on.

    For convenience, turn on the display of all characters in Word. To do this, on the “Home” tab, click on the “Display all signs” button.

    Now that you have all the characters in your documents displayed, including spaces and empty lines, left-click on the last character on the first page of the document. Then on the “Layout” tab, click “Breaks” - “Next Page”.

    Do the same steps with the second page of the document. If you did everything correctly, then the enabled display of all characters function will show you break lines at the end of the first and second pages. In the picture below they are shown with red arrows.

    Now the third page is numbered 1. If you want it to be numbered 3, then in the menu “Insert” - “Page Number” - “Page Number Format” set the value to “Start from 3”.

    There is only one problem left, on the first two pages we have page numbers displayed. To remove them, select the first page, go to the “Layout” tab - “Page Options”. Next, in the “Paper Source” tab, check the box next to “Distinguish between first page headers and footers.”

    Do the same on the next page of your document.

    Thus, we were able to make sure that the numbering on the first two pages was not displayed and started from the third, and from the number we wanted.

    By the way, this method with a break allows you to start numbering not only from the third page, but from absolutely any one.

    To remove numbering, double-click on any page number and press the DEL key. All numbers will be removed from the document.

    Page numbering in Word 2003

    There are still quite a few people who use the outdated Word 2003. In it, page numbering is done in a slightly different order than for newer versions of the program.

    In the open Word 2003 file, click on the top menu “Insert” - “Page Numbers”.

    Set the position of the numbers (for example, at the bottom of the page) and alignment (for example, to the right). By unchecking the “Number on the first page” item, you can disable numbering on the title page of the document.

    Click on the "Format" button. Specify the numbering format (for example, Roman numerals), and also specify which digit to start page numbering with.

    After making changes, click OK and all pages will become numbered.

    To number from the third or any other page in Word 2003, first turn on the display of all characters. After that, move the cursor to the last character on the first page and click “Insert” - “Page Break” in the horizontal menu. Do the same on the second one. From now on, numbering will start from the third page.
