    Smartphone models from the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi, released over the past 2-3 years, have a built-in IrDA (infrared port), which somewhat performs a very important function. If 15 years ago this device was used to transmit data, modern technologies use infrared radiation to control other equipment via a smartphone. The article describes the procedure on how to enable the IR port on Xiaomi and then use it to control various equipment.

    Xiaomi models with infrared port

    Once again, it’s worth saying that IrDA on phones from a Chinese manufacturer performs the only function of controlling other equipment, essentially replacing the remote control. It is impossible to transmit data, as it was before, via IrDA.

    To date, an IR port has been installed on the following models from Xiaomi: Mi4, Mi4C, Mi5, Redmi Note 2, Redmi Note 3 (Pro), Redmi 3 (S). Other smartphones from the Chinese manufacturer can also perform the functions of a remote control via a Wi-Fi connection, but you can only control TVs on the MiTV platform and MiBox set-top boxes from Xiaomi. However, let’s move on to the main point, where we will describe the features of working with the IR port in Xiaomi smartphones.

    Mi Remote and remote control

    To use, for example, the infrared port on Xiaomi Mi4, you will need the Mi Remote program. With its help you can control: TVs, air conditioners, media players, as well as the above-mentioned devices from Xiaomi. Now let's look at how to enable and then correctly configure the software we need.

    Mi Remote is completely free software, which is most often pre-installed by the manufacturer at the firmware stage. If for some reason this program is not available, then it can be downloaded from Google Play. It’s worth saying right away that when entering Mi Remote in the search, the user will not see this name directly, but the list will be headed by a program with a name made from Chinese characters, under which the name of the developer “Xiaomi.Inc” will be visible.

    You need to download exactly the described application and do not be afraid of the Chinese language, since after installation and opening the user will see a Russian-language interface. If the program opened in another language, you can always find it on the Internet in Russian.

    Algorithm for working with Mi Remote

    Now let's look at how to use the downloaded application:

    If everything is done correctly, the result will be a control panel displayed on the screen with the main functional buttons. If this does not happen, you need to check the correct choice of device model, for which you can enter data about your equipment in a special window. It is quite possible that the selected projector/TV/player is simply not supported by this software.

    Bottom line

    Replacing a regular remote control is quite simple if you have the smartest smartphone from Xiaomi at your disposal. Who would have thought that the infrared port would find a second life and be used to organize remote control of a wide variety of equipment. Now most media and home appliances can be connected using a single smartphone with built-in IrDA.

    We invite you to watch the video instructions for setting up the mi remote program.

    Every year there is a more and more clear tendency that the mobile phone will become a thing with which you can control almost everything in the house. We can judge this by new software products from leading gadget manufacturers. In particular, most Xiaomi Mi smartphones have begun to be equipped with infrared ports. This is done to ensure interaction with other electronic equipment that has the same IR port. So that the user can control all the equipment that surrounds him on one convenient screen, the Remote application from Mi was born.

    Operating principle

    By downloading and installing Remote on your gadget, you automatically turn it into a kind of remote control with which you can control household appliances. No special training is required to use the application, because navigation in it is extremely simple and clear.

    You can choose among the devices included in the Mi database. If it is detected there, then control via the infrared port directly from your mobile phone will not be difficult. If the device is little known or is not in the database at all, then it is unlikely that it will be possible to fully configure its control from the gadget. But there is no need to worry - the database has all modern TVs, washing machines, set-top boxes and a lot of other equipment.

    In some cases, connection is possible not only via an infrared port, but also via a Wi-Fi wireless network. This is relevant for communication between several branded gadgets of the company. For example, a phone and Mi Box or Mi TV.

    Usage algorithm

    After installing the application on your Mi gadget, simply indicate which device you want to connect to. There are the following categories:

    • Camera – it’s easy to guess that we are talking about cameras;
    • Cable / Satellite box – here we mean any cable antennas;
    • Fan – fans;
    • TV – televisions;
    • Mi TV/Mi Box – set-top boxes for TVs;
    • Box – any other consoles;
    • DVD players;
    • Acoustic Systems – acoustic systems;
    • Projector – projectors;
    • A/V receiver – any audio or video amplifiers.

    Having selected the device type, proceed to selecting its manufacturer. The list there is huge, so you will probably find what you need, unless you are using equipment from some completely unknown company.

    When the desired device is found in the system, you can begin testing its interaction with the gadget. To do this, point your smartphone at the infrared port of the equipment with which you want to establish contact, while holding down the button that appears on the application screen. If there is a response, and control of another piece of equipment is established, then we confirm the settings and edit the profile, adding the location of the device to it (a specific room in a living space or office). This is only possible when connected to the Internet, and when the data is saved in the profile on the phone, each subsequent contact can be established even offline.

    Managing home or office equipment is possible even without logging into your Mi account, that is, without any passwords, codes or registrations.

    To download Mi Remote, simply go to Play Market, search for the app and download it to your phone. The manufacturer guarantees the absence of any paid functions and unpleasant surprises when using the application.

    Friends, hello everyone! I recently bought myself a budget Android smart Xiaomi Redmi 4X, which, as it turns out, has an infrared port.

    With it, you can configure your phone and use it as a remote control.

    So, for example, I connected to a TV in one of the establishments in my city and switched channels, programs, turned up/down the volume, etc.

    In short, the waiters didn’t understand what was happening, they ran here and there, tuning the TV :)

    Rewind the unpleasant moments of life, as in the film with Adam Sandler “Click. Of course, it won’t work through life with a remote control, but it will still help simplify it a little :)

    What is Mi Remote and how to use this program?

    Actually, let's get down to business. Mi Remote is a special Android program (or rather an application) for smartphones from Xiaomi, with which you can control home appliances via your phone.

    TVs, game consoles, air conditioners, various types of players - all this will work through Mi Remote and your Xiaomi phone. There are similar applications from other smartphone manufacturers (Meizu, Huawei, etc.).

    Connecting a Xiaomi phone to a TV

    As an example, I’ll briefly tell my story about how I connected my gadget to an LG Smart TV. It's very easy to do.

    1. Launch the application Mi Remote .
    2. Click on the green button Add remote control .
    3. We select the type of equipment (in my case TV) and brand (LG).
    4. The application will ask: “Is TV on?” – press Yes/No.
    5. After this, it will ask whether the menu button works and that’s it, you can use the phone as a remote control.

    As you can see, there is nothing complicated in this instruction. After this, a shortcut for connecting to your equipment will be created in the phone menu.

    The infrared port was lost somewhere in the 2000s. With the advent of Bluetooth technology on the world market, the need for an IR port has been reduced to a minimum. It is still used to remotely control equipment via a remote control, which is why it is needed in some phones.

    Xiaomi is one of the few that still produces gadgets with this sensor. This is definitely very convenient for controlling some components in the house. A unique Mi Remote program was developed to operate the IR port. It is exclusive to the MIUI shell.

    Mi Remote, which is installed by default in almost every smartphone from Xiaomi, is designed for remote control of home appliances. With this utility, you can use your smartphone as a remote control for a TV, air conditioner, music device, refrigerator, and so on.

    The program is capable of controlling such types of equipment as:

    How does Mi Remote work?

    It works using an infrared (IR) port. Even the cheapest Xiaomi smartphones, such as Redmi 4A, are equipped with this sensor, so Mi Remote is available to everyone.

    Who can use Mi Remote?

    To use the application, you first need to make sure that your smartphone has an infrared port.

    Typically, Xiaomi smartphones with an infrared port have the software already preinstalled. If suddenly not, then you can download it completely free from the Play Market or on any other resource in the form of an apk file.

    Here is a list of all smartphones from Xiaomi that are equipped with this sensor (press Ctrl + R on your computer to quickly find your smartphone or use the search function in your browser):

    • Xiaomi Mi Note 2
    • Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus
    • Xiaomi Mi 5/Pro
    • Xiaomi Mi Max/Prime
    • Xiaomi Mi 4S
    • Xiaomi Mi 4c
    • Xiaomi Mi 4
    • Redmi Pro
    • Redmi Note 4X
    • Redmi Note 4 (MTK & SD)
    • Redmi Note 3 (MTK & SD)
    • Redmi Note 2
    • Redmi 4/Prime
    • Redmi 4A
    • Redmi 3S/Prime/3X
    • Redmi 3/Prime

    Conditions for controlling home appliances

    If we’ve figured out the smartphone, then let’s move directly to the equipment. Please note that not all devices receive this signal.

    Before using the program, check whether the control equipment uses a remote control with an IR signal. Many manufacturers make wireless remote control via Bluetooth or even Wi-Fi. If your home devices are not equipped with an infrared receiver, then, alas, Mi Remote is useless.

    Also, the control problem may be caused by inaccurate program settings. Carefully review all the points and choose the right brand of device you want to control. Make sure that the smartphone is looking directly at the receiver, because the IR port works on a flat beam, it cannot spread over all 360 degrees, like Wi-Fi. If nothing works, press all the buttons; sometimes the device simply cannot recognize the command from the smartphone.

    How to set up the application?

    Setting up the Mi Remote app is very simple and straightforward.

    1. Find it on your smartphone through the launcher or Remote application manager and run it.
    2. Before selecting a device, enable Internet access, then the utility will find more brands on the Internet that are supported by it. Once selected, an Internet connection will no longer be required and the program will go offline.
    3. After launch, click on the plus sign at the top or “add...”. We see a list of equipment in English. For a clearer choice, use the list above, which contains the entire list with a brief description. Select a type and move on.
    4. Depending on your selection, Remote will ask you a couple of questions. We answer them.
    5. Then, after selecting the device, we find the brand. The application supports the most popular and not so popular brands, such as LG, Sony, Samsung, TCL and so on. We answer simple questions to check the functionality and that’s it, the setup is complete.

    What else can Mi Remote please you with?

    Mi Remote doesn't end with simple controls. Among its capabilities is also the addition of quick access to the selected remote control via the main screen. A shortcut is created, clicking on which immediately opens the control, without any settings or anything else.

    After some settings, the utility will help you check whether it works correctly. This will look like a small survey. An IR signal will be sent to the equipment, after which a window will appear on the smartphone asking whether it worked or not. This way you can check which nodes can be controlled by Mi Remote.

    Mi Remote can also work via Wi-Fi, but only with proprietary equipment from Xiaomi: Mi Box, Mi TV. If your smartphone does not have an IR port, the application will endlessly search for its native device via Wi-Fi.

    The application has an editing function. The point is to make it more convenient to use. Here you can rename the remote control, set the location (by default, living room, bedroom, study, dining room, office) and create a shortcut on the desktop, which was discussed above.

    Mi Remote is available now for free and without registration to all Xiaomi owners. There is no need to connect to a Mi account and register in the program itself.
