    How to use wifi analyzer

    After installation, launch the program and see what networks we have. Below I will show you how to use wifi analyzer. My example shows all the networks that my smartphone can see.

    In this case, the networks are located on different channels. At the bottom there is a strip of channels and the channels go from one to fourteen. But I want to say right away that old routers only support the first 12 channels. And channels 13 and 14 support only the most modern devices that support the latest versions of the Wi-Fi protocol. Accordingly, in order to find the best network, we must look at those networks that are currently free and on which the least amount of interference will be created. If you noticed, in the graph above, channels 3 and 4 are free. In addition, there is also a ninth channel, on which there are no networks at all, but the problem is that work on this channel is impossible on most devices. Therefore, some factors need to be taken into account. For example, if you have a modern router, you can turn on any channel in it and use this channel to connect to your Internet. But there is another point. In addition to the fact that you can connect using the 2.4 GHz frequency, there is also a 5 GHz frequency. Let me switch to it now.

    Please note, when switching to the 5 GHz frequency, other channel numbers have already gone. But, as you can see, there are much fewer networks that are used. I use a 5 GHz network because the least amount of other routers operate at this frequency. There are a total of six networks here at the 5 GHz frequency, including mine. That is, it turns out that at the 5 GHz frequency there are many more channels that are not occupied by anything. This means there is no interference. But there are small differences from 2.4 GHz. 2.4 GHz networks are better at penetrating walls and avoiding obstacles that may be in the signal path. 5 GHz can perform much better over long distances. In my case, I simply went into the router settings and enabled support for the 5 GHz line. This gave me the opportunity not to encounter other Wi-Fi networks.

    Let me now show you what settings you need to make for the router. If you do not have support for a 5 GHz network in your router, then, naturally, you will need to use a 2.4 GHz network and simply select the channel that is free according to the graph.

    Router settings for stable Wi-Fi operation

    Open the browser and enter one of the addresses 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in the address bar, depending on the router model. The exact address must be written on the router itself. In my case, the router is Netgear and I am visiting the address 192.168.1.1. I go to the Wi-Fi network section and there are certain settings that allow me to configure the router to the frequencies that I need. Please note that my router supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

    On my channel, the 2.4 GHz frequency is on channel 13. This is exactly the channel that is least loaded. You can also use channel 14 on the Netgear router. In my case, it is better to choose the 5 GHz frequency. At 5 GHz, automatic channel selection is selected.

    General algorithm for setting up wifi

    In this article I will try to tell an approximate sequence of actions to solve this kind of problem. As an example, I will give screenshots of the settings of my home router TPLINK models TL-WR841N.

    Stage #0. The easiest step is to start by simply rebooting both devices, perhaps one of them is “a little stuck.”

    Stage #1. First, you need to check the wireless access settings in the router settings: name for Wi-Fi hotspot, openness to discovery, communication standard. For diagnostics, you can remove the password and encryption on Wi-Fi.


    "Network name"- this name should appear in the list of Wi-Fi networks on the laptop.

    "Mode"- this is a data transfer mode setting, it is better to select it with the maximum number of modes.

    "Enable wireless broadcasting"- this is a general activation of wireless mode.

    "Enable SSID Broadcast"- this setting is so that other devices can detect the router. If you do not select this setting, you will end up with a hidden network that not all devices can connect to.

    For diagnostics wireless connection protection can be disabled.

    In other routers, these settings may look different, but for diagnostics they must be set in the same way.

    Stage #2. On the laptop, you need to check in the device manager that the Wi-Fi adapter is working properly.

    If the Wi-Fi adapter does not work correctly, then you need to reinstall the driver for it.

    If you don’t have a driver or are in doubt about an existing driver, then you need to go to the laptop manufacturer’s website and search there.


    After this you can do search for Wi-Fi networks, find your network, and try to connect to the router.

    If the connection is successful, check your Internet access.

    If the connection fails, check the connection to the router from another device, for example, a smartphone.

    Stage #3. If there is no connection to the router from other devices (or there is a connection, but no access to the Internet), then the problem is most likely in the router.

    In this case, you can check the antenna mount on the router, perhaps reset the settings or update the router firmware, then reconfigure the Wi-Fi settings and check the connection to it again. If these steps do not help, you will have to take the router to a service center or replace it with another one.

    Stage #4. If the connection was successful from other devices, then the problem is most likely in the laptop.

    In this case, you need to check the Wi-Fi settings on the laptop again, perhaps reinstall the Wi-Fi driver, or remove the Wi-Fi adapter in the device manager and find it again.

    One of the reasons for Wi-Fi malfunctions may be OS updates. I recommend additionally checking whether OS updates were installed immediately before the failure occurred. If there were such updates, you can try to roll back them and check your connection to the router via Wi-Fi again.

    The most radical method - reinstalling the OS - should be used in the very last case, when none of the software configuration options has brought a positive result.
