• We connect and configure Wi-Fi on the computer ourselves. How to Connect a WiFi Router If You Have Wired Internet

Wireless Wi-Fi networks are a very convenient invention. In such a network, home computers can share a common Internet connection, exchange information, play online multiplayer games, and print documents on a shared network printer without using a wired connection for each network participant, provided that it has a WiFi radio module. This allows you to get rid of the need to install network cables around the house and not be tied to a specific place of work where the cable is routed. You can even go out into the garden at home and work in the fresh air within the range of the WiFi network.

As the questions to our previous article showed, many issues of the practical implementation of a wireless network remained unclear for many users. Therefore, it was decided to write the second part of the article on how to install wifi at home with an emphasis on the technical implementation of a wireless network.

Organizing a WiFi network at home always begins with determining the type of Internet connection used. The most popular connection options currently are:

    1. Wired high-speed connection primarily based on FTTb technology. With this type of connection, a twisted pair cable comes into the house or apartment and is connected to the 8-pin RJ-45 connector of the computer.
    2. Wired high-speed network connection based on ADSL technology. For this connection, a telephone wire is used as a transmission channel and the modem is connected to a telephone socket, and a wire with a 4-pin RJ-12 “telephone” connector comes to the modem itself.
    3. In cases where there is no possibility of connecting to wired unlimited Internet, wireless connection technologies using LTE technology from leading cellular operators are used. For many, the abbreviation may not mean anything, so let us clarify that we mean the third generation of mobile communications with increased data transfer speeds - 3G networks. When using this connection, a 3G modem is inserted into one of the computer’s USB ports, which in appearance resembles a flash drive and provides a connection to the Internet.
Decide which of the considered groups your connection belongs to. This will determine the type of equipment you will need to purchase to install a WiFi network at home.

For the first type of connection, this will be the largest group of routers such as D-Link DIR 320, Asus WL-520GC/GU, Zyxel Keenetic.

For the second type of ADSL connection, modems with a WiFi module such as D-Link DSL-2640U, Acorp Sprinter@ADSL W422G, TrendNet TEW-658BRM.

For the third type, the choice of devices is smaller, but you can also choose something suitable. For example, routers Zyxel Keenetic 4G, TrendNet TEW-655BR3G, Netgear WNDR4300.

I would like to say that the indicated models are not recommended, but are given only to make it easier to navigate with the necessary equipment. Most often, certain devices can be recommended by the provider whose Internet connection services you use.

After the device is purchased to run a WiFi network at home, it will need to be configured. To do this, connect an Ethernet cable to the WAN connector of the router, a telephone cable to the ADSL modem, and a corresponding wireless modem to the 4G USB connector of the router and begin setting up the device.

The setup is carried out through the so-called web interface by connecting the computer to the device with an Ethernet cable. Connect one end of the cable with an 8-pin connector to the network card of your laptop or computer, and the other end to any of the LAN ports of the router or modem. After that, go to the router settings by typing the address 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of any browser and pressing the Enter key on the keyboard. The exact address of the settings (web interface) must be indicated in the documentation for the device.

You can enter the settings using your login and password. They are also indicated in the documentation or on a sticker on the bottom cover of the device. The general setting principle is as follows:

    1. First, configure the current Internet connection in the “Internet connection” (WAN) section. You can know that the connection has been successfully established by the working Internet and opening sites on the computer connected by wire to the device.
    2. Once an Internet connection is established, a wireless network is configured that will “distribute” the current Internet connection to all home computers and devices via WiFi. To do this, go to the “Wireless Network” section, select WPA/WPA2 data encryption type, assign a network access key and give the name of the future network (SSID), by which it will be detected by computers within its range.
    3. Restart the router and disconnect the network cable that connects it to the computer. Try to find the created wireless network on your computer and connect to it by entering the access key.
The entire setup process is described in more detail in our previous article about houses.

If, after trying to connect, no error message is displayed, and a wireless network activity indicator appears on the computer and all sites open in the browser, then the WiFi installation at home was successful. Otherwise, check your device settings again.

Connecting to a wireless network is the most convenient way to access the Internet at good speed without unnecessary wires. However, to enjoy all the benefits of a wireless connection, you must first understand how to set up Wi-Fi on a laptop.

    Enabling the adapter

Before you start creating a new connection, you need to check if the Wi-FI adapter is turned on.

Each laptop model has its own function key for turning the adapter on/off. For example, ASUS laptops use the combination Fn+F2, and Acer laptops use Fn+F3. On some Lenovo models, adapter status is controlled using a hardware switch located on the front panel.

To determine which key you have installed, look at the F1-F12 row. One of the buttons should have an icon - an antenna that distributes a signal. Press this button in combination with the Fn key and check that the Wi-Fi adapter indicator light changes from red to blue or green.

What to do if the Wi-Fi adapter does not turn on?

There are situations when, after pressing a function key, the adapter does not turn on. Typically this problem occurs due to one of the following reasons:

    • Incorrectly installed drivers.
    • Incorrect operation of the system.
    • Virus infection of laptop.

Until you eliminate the cause, the question of how to set up Wi-Fi in a laptop will not receive a positive resolution. Most often, the problem lies in incorrectly installed drivers, but it would also be a good idea to check the system for viruses. If no malicious applications are found, reinstall the Wi-Fi module drivers and try turning it on again.

How to set up Wi-Fi on a laptop

    Setting up on Windows XP

To configure, you just need to correctly specify some parameters of the wireless connection:

If you have set a password for your wireless connection, you will be required to provide a security key, after which the connection will be established.

    Setting up on Windows 7

We've sorted out XP, now let's see how to set up a wireless network on a laptop with Windows 7 installed. There are practically no fundamental differences:

This completes the wifi setup on a Windows 7 laptop. When connected, you enter the security key and gain access to the Internet.

For Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 there are no differences in settings from the seventh version. The list of networks available for connection can be called up directly from the notification panel - there is a special Wi-Fi icon in the tray.

Video of Wi-Fi settings on a laptop

Before connecting, it is advisable to find an agreement with the provider, where all the settings are written down. If you can’t find it, you can call and find out what you need to set up your Wi-Fi router. Once we have this information, we can connect the router.

It is advisable to install the router in the center of the house or apartment so that the signal is more or less stable even on a balcony or loggia.

Typically, the blue color indicates the WAN connector for connecting the wire from the provider. On the ASUS RT-N10E router this is Ethernet. Separately, yellow indicates Ethernet connectors for connecting computers via a local network.

At the beginning, we connect at least one computer via a local network using a patch cord (you can see how to crimp a twisted pair cable and get a patch cord at home). To configure. We connect as shown in the figure above and sit down at the computer connected by wire to the router.

Go to “Network and Sharing Center”

    On the left click ""

Find your Local Area Connection, right-click on it and select “ Properties»

Among the marked components used by this connection, select “ Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click " Properties«

If you have “Get the next IP address” set, you can take a screenshot of this window so that the settings are at hand. The same settings are written in your agreement with the provider. Install " Obtain an IP address automatically" And " Obtain DNS server address automatically". Click " OK»

Now you need to log into the router's Web interface. We look at the bottom of the router case and there is the address of the Web interface and authorization data

I needed to reboot my laptop.

Changing the password for logging into the router's Web interface

Now you need to change the password to log into the router’s Web interface for greater security. Go to the section " Administration" to the tab " System". Set a new password and confirm it.

Here you can also set the Time zone from the drop-down list. Click “Apply”.

    Conclusion

The most difficult thing when connecting a Wi-Fi router at home is finding an agreement with the provider. When this is done, feel free to set it up according to the instructions above. If you have a different router and are having difficulty setting it up, you can ask your provider for help by calling support or finding instructions for your model on the Internet.

And one more thing. When you have configured the router, the connection that you started on the computer to connect to the Internet no longer needs to be started. (this is in the case of PPPoE, L2TP and the like) Now the connection is restored by the router.

Wi-Fi does not exist for organizations and banks. For such purposes, an agreement is concluded with specialized companies that solve this problem quickly and professionally. But when building a small home, it is more than relevant. The services of a specialist of this profile are not cheap. Therefore, there is a desire to do this operation yourself and thereby save money. Moreover, there is nothing complicated here, and even a novice user can do it.

    Installation procedure

The algorithm for Wi-Fi is as follows:

    • We establish a connection to the router and other network components that are connected to each other by wires.
    • Configuring the router.
    • Creating wireless network connections.

    Connecting a router

The first step in how to install Wi-Fi is establishing all the physical connections. The key link of the entire local area network is the router. It is with its switching that this operation must begin. On its back side there are usually five ports for connecting twisted pair cables and one round socket for power supply. Four ports are yellow and one is blue. In the latter we install the input wire from the provider. We connect all devices that will be connected to the yellow sockets using the second end of these wires must be installed in the devices (TVs, receivers and system units, for example). You must first prepare all cable products. Next, connect the power supply to the router, and then install it into an outlet.

    Setting up the router

The next important step in how to install Wi-Fi is setting the correct router parameters. To do this, we first connect it to a computer or laptop using a twisted pair cable. Moreover, connection is only needed at the setup stage. It can then be removed if necessary. Turn on the router by pressing the power button on the back. Then we carry out a similar procedure with the system unit or laptop. After finishing downloading each of them, we proceed to the next stage. Launch any installed browser on your PC. Enter 192.168.1.1 and press enter. Next, a request should appear in which you must enter your username and password. This information can be found on the router case or in the instruction manual. Then you need to set the parameters of the wireless network in the router settings - its name, access password and encryption method. The first two parameters can be selected at your discretion. But the last of them must be set to “WPA2” (this will allow you to obtain the maximum degree of network security). Then the router reboots, after which it is ready for use.

    PC connection

At the final stage, you need to install Wi-Fi on your computer. The most difficult thing to do is on a stationary device. You need to connect an external adapter to it using the USB interface. Next, install the drivers on it from the CD that comes with the kit. In some cases, you may need to restart your PC. The next step will start the adapter. It will create a list of available connections. In it you need to select the one that was installed in the previous step. Then a window will appear in which you will need to enter a password. Then we wait to receive the network address - and you can start browsing the Internet. On laptops this operation is much easier. The adapter with drivers is integrated and configured. Therefore, in this case it all starts with scanning available connections. Further, everything is similar to setting up a stationary system unit.

    Conclusion

The article describes step by step the method of how to install home Wi-Fi and configure it. There is nothing overly complicated in this operation, and even a novice user can carry it out. Therefore, we take it and boldly do it.
