Rice. 11 – Monitoring window for key indicators

The last important element of the interface is a panel for managing overclocking profiles and switching between them.

    Rice. 12 – Preset management

    Simple Rules for Voltage Control

The program allows you to adjust the voltage on the host graphics adapter.

Depending on its microarchitecture and the chip used, the parameter may be displayed in millivolts or as a percentage of the original value.

By default, the option is deactivated on all devices except branded ones (from MSI). To activate it, you need to go to the main application settings and enable the appropriate option.

There are several modes available here: for reference chips, for chips from MSI and third-party graphics adapters.

Rice. 13 – Unlocking the supply voltage control function

If after activating the setting it is still grayed out, refer to your GPU manual.

Most likely, Afterburner does not support the programmable microcontroller installed on the device, even if it supports voltage control.

You should increase the parameter value gradually, by several percent each time, and closely monitor the temperature and stability of the video card after each change in value.

With a significant increase, the device will overheat faster and make more errors in calculations, which will most likely lead to malfunctions of the entire system, the appearance of artifacts, etc.

After reprogramming the controller, which is done by clicking on the button with a check mark, it is best to do it, for example, using the proprietary Kombuster utility.

If no deviations are noticed within a couple of hours, the indicator can be increased by another few percent or tens of units.

Rice. 14 – Applying the new configuration

If after saving the core voltage value changes to the standard value, try going to the settings and selecting a different voltage control method, but most likely you will not be able to adjust the value through MSI Afterburner.

Changing the peak energy consumption value

The option is not active on all devices; it only works when the technology for managing electrical energy consumption is implemented in the graphics adapter.

Rice. 15 – Slider for changing the maximum power consumption

    Core and video memory frequency

Core Clock will help you change the maximum operating frequency of the GPU. The higher it is, the more information is processed per clock cycle.

Memory Clock – a parameter that provides access to programming the video memory frequency.

Depending on the device, the values may be presented explicitly or as a percentage of the original.

It costs to increase/decrease parameters by a few percent or a couple of tens of units at each step, conducting stress tests after each saving of settings or launch.

The program in overlay (overlay) mode visualizes the current number of frames produced by the video card in the game.

Rice. 16 – Adjusting the graphics core frequency

    Efficient cooling

To activate manual change of a variable, click on the gear icon next to the slider.

Rice. 17 – Enabling manual cooler speed control mode

If you want the system to independently adjust the fan speed based on the current temperature of the video card, switch to automatic value control by clicking on the Auto icon.

Rice. 18 – Activate automatic fan speed control

In the “Cooler” settings section, you can specify the update frequency of the parameter and achieve maximum cooling efficiency, minimizing fan rattling.

Rice. 19 – Changing the period for updating data on the current fan speed

    Monitoring

In the Afterbuner settings tab of the same name, you can disable visualization and indicate the peak values of all indicators that are read by the program from sensors.

When the specified value is reached, the application will warn the user that it has been reached.

Rice. 20 – Remove unnecessary graphs from the monitoring window

    Profiles

For various situations (modern games, video processing, very graphics-intensive games, working with 2D graphics), MSI Afterburner allows you to save five different overclocking options.

For games, for example, the indicators responsible for the performance of the device should be increased, and for watching movies, surfing the Internet, you can reduce the power consumption of the video card.

What is noteworthy is that switching between profiles is carried out “on the fly” by clicking on a single icon or using the keys assigned to it.

To add a preset, change the required overclocking settings in the central window and click on the “Save” icon.

Rice. 21 – Saving new settings in a separate profile

Then click on one of the flashing numbers to assign the current configuration to the corresponding cell.

In the “Profiles” settings tab, the activation of each of the presets can be assigned to a combination of hot keys that are not used in the system.

Rice. 22 – Assigning a hotkey combination to activate a list of settings

Previously, the application was equipped with functions and video and supported various profiles for working in three-dimensional and two-dimensional modes, which allowed saving energy, but in the latest versions the developers abandoned these functions.

This concludes the guide on the topic: “How to use MSI Afterburner”.

And remember: overclocking a video card not only increases the risk of its premature failure, but also reduces its working life (accelerates wear).

If you need monitoring of the processor and video card in the game, and at the same time you would not refuse to display the frame rate (FPS) during the game, then the easiest way to get all this for free is - install MSI Afterburner.

The program is simple and intuitive, its only drawback is that the default interface buttons are very small.

MSI Afterburner can monitor all the parameters a player needs:

    • GPU temperature.
    • CPU temperature.
    • The load level of both, to determine the “bottlenecks” of the system.
    • Frame rate (FPS).
    • Video card cooler rotation speed.
    • As well as many other indicators that are not so necessary for the average gamer, such as frequencies and voltages, as well as information about the swap file. Of course, you decide what to monitor and display on the Overlay Screen Display (OSD).
    • MSI Afterburner can also capture videos and screenshots, and overclock the video card. In general, complete stuffing!

Data can not only be monitored, but also displayed on the screen during the game to enjoy real-time numbers without minimizing the game every minute. By the way, along with all these statistics, you can also display a clock on the screen, which can be very convenient.

One of the features of the program is that peak values are displayed on monitoring graphs, so there is no need to scroll through the graphs - just glance at the red numbers above them.

    Setting up MSI Afterburner

To begin, click the Settings button at the bottom of the program panel:

At the top of the window that appears:

    1. select the “Monitoring” tab;
    2. We check the boxes on the list items that we want to monitor. Drag the lines with your mouse in the order in which you want them to appear in the game;
    3. While a line item is selected, you can assign it whether it will be displayed in the OED during the game or not (and at the same time color, name, and other properties).

As you can see, in the screenshot the Frame Rate is not checked, but usually it should be checked unless your FPS is displayed by the game itself or another program.

After this, I advise you to look at what is hidden in other tabs of this panel, especially in the far right - Interface.

Setting up the MSI Afterburner OED

So, to configure the display of FPS and monitoring data during the game, in the same settings panel, find the OED tab, and there the “Advanced” button. Click it!

The OED settings window has opened. In it you must do the following things:

    1. Make sure the OED display switch is in the ON position (if not, you know what to do!).
    2. Optional: enable it if the anti-cheat suddenly swears in the game.
    3. Optional: affects the display method (roughly speaking, the font) of the OED. It is best to choose Raster 3D, where you can customize the font by clicking on the Raster 3D inscription again.
    4. It is better to turn on the shadow of the font (switch it to the ON position).
    5. Choose the OED font color to suit your taste!
    6. Squares at the corners of the monitor are a quick way to move the OED to the desired corner of the monitor. Or you can simply drag the OED with the mouse, or set its coordinates manually.

That's probably all about quickly setting up MSI Afterburner to monitor the processor and video card in the game. If you need a detailed overview of the program's capabilities, watch one of the best videos on this topic from Artyom:

After support for Riva Tuner was discontinued, MSI Afterburner was released based on it. This concludes the guide on the topic: “How to use MSI Afterburner”. And remember: overclocking a video card not only increases the risk of its premature failure, but also reduces its working life (accelerates wear).

Sometimes, especially in situations when new games are released, personal computer users are faced with the fact that their video card is not powerful enough to run the game without “brakes.” But there is no need to rush to buy a new video card. Because there is such a wonderful program as MSI Afterburner.

    What can MSI Afterburner do?

    • Overclocking a video card
    • Current status monitoring
    • Capture video from your computer screen
    • Screenshots (saving them in a separate folder)

What does it mean to overclock? Overclock your video card means increasing its performance by changing the standard settings of the video card. However, attention! Here it is worth considering that all actions are carried out at your own peril and risk - the manufacturer does not guarantee the repair of the device, just as it does not guarantee its proper operation if the default settings are changed. The video card can simply burn out, in the literal sense of the word, if the available cooling is not enough.

But slight overclocking of the video card in the presence of normal cooling does not pose any danger. However, do not forget to monitor the temperature of the video adapter. Fortunately, the program that will be discussed in this article has such an opportunity. Moreover, it is possible to monitor the temperature of the graphics core directly during the game. The program itself can be found on the official MSI website. And to the question of what to do to overclock a video card using MSI Afterburner, how to use this program and the features of its settings, as well as several other useful functions, this article will tell you.

MSI Afterburner, instructions for setting up and overclocking a video card

The program only supports video cards from NVIDIA and AMD manufacturers. If you have a video card from other manufacturers, then, unfortunately, you won’t be able to use all its functionality.

First you need to install the program. You can find it on the official MSI website. During installation you are prompted to select a language. Then a new window appears, with a choice of components of the program to be installed - select all the items with check marks. And click next. Here MSI Afterburner will prompt you to select the path to your installation. Select a directory and install. Enable MSI Afterburner by clicking on the shortcut located on the desktop. After launch, a window appears with many sliders, settings and various monitoring sensors.

    Program settings

By clicking on the button with the image of a gear, the program settings panel is called up. By default it is set there main settings tab. In this menu, if your computer has several video cards, check the “Synchronize settings of identical GPUs” checkbox. Next, check the “Unlock voltage monitoring” checkbox. This will allow you to adjust the voltage using the Core Voltage slider. In the main properties, so that the program retains its settings after a system reboot, you can check the “Run with Windows” checkbox. In this case, after the system boots, the program will immediately start working in the background.

    Cooling settings

Cooler settings allow you to adjust the fan speed, thereby influencing the cooling of the video card during overclocking. First you need to activate the “software user mode” by checking the box. Now on the window with the graph you can directly drag the nodes with the mouse, adjusting the fan speed at the desired temperature. At temperatures around 80 degrees and above, the fan speed should be set to 100%. After this, the video card can be tested in game mode or with a third-party program. If after some time of playing the program does not show a temperature of 90 degrees or more, then you can overclock the video card. At high temperatures (more than 90 degrees) this will be dangerous.

    Overclocking the video adapter

If everything is normal with the temperature, then you can proceed to overclocking the video card itself. To do this, on the middle panel of MSI Aftrburner there are several sliders.

    • Core Voltage - voltage
    • Core Clock – video card frequency
    • Memory Clock – memory frequency

There are also sliders such as Power Limit and Temp.Limit, but if they refuse to work, then most likely they are not supported by your video card. Using the three sliders listed above, the video card is overclocked. You should overclock the video card gradually, gradually moving the sliders to the right and periodically testing the video card under load.

    Video adapter status monitoring

The monitoring tab is responsible for displaying readings about temperature, CPU load, core frequency and memory load directly on the monitor screen. To display monitoring on the monitor screen, check the “Show in Overlay Screen Display” checkbox. Now data will be displayed even during the game. The ATS setting is responsible for the keys that call up monitoring on the screen, including the ability to change the style of data display. Recording video and capturing screenshots The next section of the menu is setting up screenshot capture. Responsible for screenshot settings, allows you to select a folder for storing screenshots, and also assign a hotkey.

Next is the video capture menu. In the same way, as in the previous case, you can assign a hotkey to control recording, configure what format to record the video in, recording quality, frame rate, etc. Having configured the hotkey, just press it, for example, during a computer game, to start recording the image into a separate file.

    Profiles and interface

There are two tabs left - profiles and interface. The first menu allows you to save settings as separate profiles, which can always be loaded later. And the “Interface” menu is intended for settings such as language, the format in which temperatures will be displayed, and the appearance of the program.

In this post, I will share several programs for checking the temperature of a computer (processor and video card, to be more precise) that I have used. All of them are relevant for both laptops and regular desktop PCs.

Checking the temperature of a computer is needed not only by people who “overclock” certain components; it is also useful for the average user. For example, if you play demanding games, then knowing the maximum permissible temperature of the video card/processor you can understand whether it is worth lowering the graphics settings or whether the system can cope with the load. And then, the same load in winter and summer in many regions are two very different things. Like a person, a computer is also not averse to standing in the cool shade, sipping electricity instead of heating its organs under the scorching rays of the sun :) In general, if you’re intrigued, welcome, let’s start figuring it out!

I’ll say right away that there is nothing complicated here, so with peace of mind, install the program you need and check the performance of your system.

    Review

    SpeedFan

This is the first program that I came across when I set out to find out the temperature of my video card, which suddenly began to glitch and produce a “ragged” picture instead of the once smooth one (the so-called slide show effect). The installation did not cause any difficulties, and after launching the program stuck in the tray and showed the “average temperature in the hospital.” When we click on the icon, a small window appears in front of us with a bunch of indicators. Let's look at some in more detail:

    1. This part of the window contains tabs with additional settings and an area with some information about your PC. For our purposes, all this is not important :)
    2. The CPU Usage line is also not particularly interesting to us; it simply shows the overall load on the processor and each core individually (The number of rectangles depends on the number of cores in the processor)
    3. This is where we will focus our attention. This tab on the right shows the average temperature of the processor as a whole (CPU) and for each core separately (Core 0, Core 1, etc.). The GPU item is responsible for heating the video card. By the way, in that story with my card, it was here that I saw that the degrees were going off scale - the fan (cooler) simply stopped working, hence the inability to cope with the load. Still lucky 🙂 And on the left we can see the current fan rotation speed, indicated in RPM.
    4. The fourth compartment of the window makes SpeedFan stand out from the rest of the programs reviewed: it allows you to adjust the rotation speed of the coolers. In my case, I can regulate the speed of the video card, thereby lowering its temperature, if required. But, usually she herself knows at what speed to “run up” - I just play it safe sometimes.

Verdict: the program is good for those who want not only to know the temperature of the video card or CPU, but also to be able to influence it, or simply want to reduce noise from the fans.

    MSI Afterburner

I already recommended this program in a note about. Indeed, Afterburner is perhaps the most multifunctional program of all in this review: it can record video, take screenshots, show FPS in games, show temperature in the same games, CPU load, video cards, RAM - in general, a lot of options ! But the most interesting thing is that they are all secondary, because... The program is known primarily as a tool for overclocking video cards.

After launching the program, we will find ourselves in its main window, where on the left are the sliders that control overclocking (We don’t touch them, unless you can move Fan Speed as you like - this is the speed control of the video card fan), and on the right, by default, various information about your video card, necessary to monitor the stability of its overclocking. But, since we are pursuing other goals, we will configure the monitor window the way we need - it’s simple. Personally, I left only the temperature indicators for each of the processor cores and the degrees of the video card.

To select the indicators that you want to see in the monitoring window, click the Settings button and go to the Monitoring tab.

Here we are interested in the section with the choice of indicators that we will observe on the monitor screen and/or directly during the game. We mark the parameters of interest with the left mouse button, and if you want to see some value during the game, then select it and check the box “Show in Overlay Screen Display”. If everything is done correctly, then the inscription “In OED” will appear opposite the parameter name, as in the screenshot above.

After the necessary parameters are set, click OK and that’s it - we can observe them on the monitoring panel. But a few more words for those who want to see the FPS and temperature of the processor cores and video card right during the game. To do this, find the following blue monitor icon with numbers in the tray and double-click with the left mouse button:

And now a window appears in front of us with approximately the following content:

By turning on the “Show On-Screen Display” function, we activate the display of data in the game, and using the “On-Screen Display palette” and “On-Screen Display zoom” parameters, you can configure the color and font size in which this information will be displayed . After applying all the settings in my case it looks something like this:

The program directly in the game displays and tracks the temperature of the processor (each core separately, their number can be adjusted) and video card, plus a bonus - FPS (frames per second)

    HWMonitor

You can't say much about this program, because... in its free edition there are almost no options or settings other than the main one: viewing the temperatures of various parts of the PC. Hence the minimalism in design, but quite detailed information about the state of the system.

In the paid version of the program, cooler control also becomes available, but personally, I don’t see the point in buying it when SpeedFan successfully does the same, and in the case of a video card, also MSI Afterburner.

Conclusions: the best program for checking computer temperature

Well, it's time to draw some conclusions. Which temperature checking software should you use?

In terms of the capabilities offered, I would give the first place to Afterburner, this program is from a series of combines: many functions “in one bottle,” plus a very detailed explanation of each item in the settings when hovering the mouse cursor. The latter, in my opinion, is always nice: it’s clear that the developers care and they tried hard.

However, in Afterburner you can only adjust the video card fan, so if you checked the processor temperature and saw, for example, that it is higher than normal, then SpeedFan can help you: a simple but very useful program, which for some reason I still prefer to this day. I really like MSI's solution, but with SpeedFan everything is somehow simpler and for temperature needs (in my opinion) it’s just right.

A I recommend HWMonitor to those who are afraid of clicking in the wrong place and “breaking” something.— there is simply nothing to press in it, you can only find out the temperature of the processor, video card and other system components :)

That's all for today. I hope the note was useful and you can now choose the optimal solution for yourself. As usual, if you have any questions, feel free to comment 🙂 Good luck!
