It was such a little secret - something like a life hack that you could teach a friend at the right time over the phone. Those days are long gone, however, even if entering Safe Mode has become more confusing, it is also a hallmark of progress in the Windows boot sequence.

Windows 10 Safe Mode

In Safe Mode, Windows automatically excludes some programs and drivers that are not necessary for Windows to load and function properly. And he takes only what is necessary in minimal quantities. This way, the download process will be fast and safe.

In Windows 10, booting your computer into Safe Mode is slightly different than in previous versions of Windows. Starting with versions 8 and 8.1, Microsoft changed the way everyone used to get into safe mode.

If previously we simply used the F8 keys or the Shift + F8 combination to enter Safe Mode, then in Windows 10 these old methods rarely work. But this does not mean that you do not have another way to enter Safe Mode in Windows 10. In this post, I will show you 4 ways to boot your Windows 10 computer into Safe Mode. Let's take a look.

#1 F8 or F8 + Shift

In this case, the oldest method is not the best. Pressing F8 or F8 + Shift repeatedly during boot can bring back memories of your first Windows 95 or XP. But the truth is that these key combinations will rarely work in Windows 10.

Since Windows 8, Microsoft has been able to significantly reduce boot times and therefore a large percentage of modern computers are too fast to register these keystrokes. Even if the method is still technically supported by the operating system, the system simply cannot react fast enough.

Of course, you should try this easiest method first. If everything went well, you will be directed to the Advanced Boot Options Menu, where you can select and launch Safe Mode.

Note: You must press the key quickly enough until the boot logo appears. The boot logo will look like a picture, which may be different for each user, depending on the equipment manufacturer.

#2 Special download options

The Custom Boot Options menu was introduced in Windows 8.1 and it provides a wide range of options for users who have problems with their computer. It also gave access to additional boot options, which is what we needed. Below are several ways to access the menu with special boot options:

One of the easiest ways to boot into a menu with special boot options is a combination of Shift and the reboot button. To do this, press the button Shift and press reset button. This can be done in Start Menu, V login menu And other places, where there is a reboot button.
Another way is to connect recovery disk. Immediately after connecting the drive, start the system. You will be asked to select a keyboard layout, after which you will be taken to a menu with specific boot options. Creating a recovery disk is very easy. Simply type "recovery drive" into the search field, plug in the flash drive, and follow the onscreen instructions.
Finally, you can boot into a menu with special boot options, via Settings > Update & Security > Recovery. There, click the "Restart now" button under the Special boot options chapter and your computer will restart.

All three of these methods will take you to the same menu. There select Diagnostics > Advanced Options > Boot Options. Then click the reboot button, after which various download options will appear on the screen. Press F4, F5 or F6 to load one of the available Safe Mode options.

#3 System configuration

The System Configuration menu provides the fastest method, at least when you're already in Windows. Open the search field, enter msconfig.exe and press Enter. Then, in the tab, check the “Safe Mode” box. If you want to enter Safe Mode with advanced options, select the option Another shell, not minimal. Click OK and you will be prompted to reboot the system immediately.

If you need to do something before rebooting, then simply select the “Exit without rebooting” option and you can restart your PC after.

#4 Startup abort

The last method is a little harsh, but necessary in some cases. For example, if you cannot boot into the desktop, then of all the options that I described above, only one is guaranteed to work on Windows 10 - the recovery disk. Pressing F8 or F8 + Shift simply won't work on most modern computers, and unless you have a recovery disk, there seems to be no way to get into Safe Mode.

Instead of booting to the desktop, your PC will ask you how to start the system, and Safe Mode will be among the available options.

Any computer running the Windows operating system can be started in safe mode. In this mode, only the most basic components of the operating system are loaded. This allows you to start your computer even if serious software conflicts or problems occur. How to start your computer in safe mode (Windows XP or Windows 7)

If you are using Windows XP or, then starting your computer in safe mode will be quite simple. To do this, you need to restart the computer (if the computer is turned off, just turn it on) and when the computer starts booting, press the F8 key on the keyboard. You need to press the F8 key until a list of ways to boot Windows appears on the computer screen.

In this list we are only interested in the first three items. Let's look at them in more detail:

Safe Mode– standard safe mode. In this mode, the computer will start using only the most necessary components. In most cases, this is the safe mode option that is used.
Safe mode with loading network drivers– safe mode is similar to the previous one, but with loading of network drivers. When loading in this mode, you will be able to work with the local network and the Internet.
Safe Mode with Command Line Support– safe mode without GUI. After loading in this mode, a command line appears on the screen with which you can interact with the system.

Please note that the F8 key must be pressed immediately after the computer starts up. If you are a little late, the list of boot methods will not appear and the computer will start in normal mode.

How to start your computer in safe mode (Windows 8 and Windows 10)

If you are using Windows 8 or, then you will not be able to start your computer in safe mode using the method described above. The computer simply won't respond to the F8 key. In this case, you need to start Safe Mode using the MSCONFIG command or using a Windows boot disk. We'll look at both of these options next.

Option #1: Start the computer in safe mode using the MSCONFIG command.

If your computer is in working order, then you can use the MSCONFIG command. Press the Windows-R key combination and enter the MSCONFIG command in the window that appears.

After this, a window called “System Configuration” will open in front of you. In this window, you need to go to the “Boot” tab and check the box next to “Safe Mode”.

After that, close the window by clicking on the “OK” button and restart the computer. The next time you boot your computer, Safe Mode should start. In order for the computer to boot again in normal mode, you need to go to MSCONFIG again and uncheck the box.

In principle, this option for starting the computer in safe mode works in both Windows XP and Windows 7. But, using it is not as convenient as starting it via the F8 key.

Option #2: Start your computer in safe mode using a Windows boot disk.

The second option is to start safe mode using a Windows boot disk. This option will be useful if your computer does not start at all, and it is not possible to use the MSCONFIG command.

For this download option, you need the version of Windows that is installed on your computer. If it is Windows 8, then you need a boot disk with Windows 8, if it is Windows 10, then Windows 10.

Insert your Windows boot disk and boot from it. At the very beginning, a window will appear in front of you with a choice of language. Here we simply click on the “Next” button.

And open the “Advanced Settings” subsection.

As a result, it should appear in front of you. In this line you need to enter the command “ bcdedit /set (globalsettings) advancedoptions true" After entering this command, simply close the command line by clicking on the button with the red cross.

After closing the command line, the Select Action menu will appear. Here we select the “Continue” option.

After this, the computer should reboot. After rebooting, boot the computer in normal mode (not from the boot disk). As a result, when you start your computer, a list of ways to boot Windows will appear on the screen, with which you can start Safe Mode.

It should be noted that now, every time you start your computer, a list of boot methods will appear. In order to disable it, you need to boot from the disk again, go to the command line and run the command “ bcdedit /deletevalue (globalsettings) advancedoptions».

How to start Safe Mode when booting Windows 10

If the Windows 10 system does not boot to the start screen and you need to enter or start safe mode when turning on Windows 10 through the “BIOS”, as for example before in Windows 7, with the F8 key, then you will need to get into the Windows 10 recovery environment using other methods. which are described below. It can be created on another working computer or while yours was still working.

Note: If you can boot to your desktop, then launch Command Prompt as an administrator and proceed to step 3.

Step 1. When you start from the installation flash drive, go to the point installations and click on the link below " System Restore".

Step 2. You will be taken to the additional settings of windows 10. Next, go to the settings Troubleshooting > Advanced Settings >Command line.

Step 3. Enter the following code into the command line (you can copy it in its entirety, you can enter each command via Enter):

Press the restart button on the computer itself many times in a row to trigger an error and bring up the process diagnostic menu.

How to add Safe Mode to the OS boot selection menu

Windows 10 now has additional startup options. This will look the same as if you have multiple versions of the OS installed on your computer. If you often use safe mode, then setting up the menu when choosing an OS will be very excellent and convenient. In the picture below I have configured some settings for myself. 2) . Select "PSU with network" from the list and select "Network" from the bottom and check the " Make these boot options permanent". Click apply and this way we can load safe mode with the network, i.e. with the ability to access the Internet.

3) . Highlight "BP CMD", below select " Another shell"and check the box" Make these boot options permanent." Click Apply and OK.

Step 2. You will be taken to the windows 10 recovery environment. In this environment, you can reset settings, restore the system, and much more. In the recovery environment, click on Troubleshooting.

How to enter safe mode in Windows 7

Method 1. Windows 7 starts when you press a button F8. Once you have turned on or restarted your computer, press the F8 button at 1 second intervals. The method will also work with Windows XP. After calling up the additional settings menu, select the download option.

Start menu, then Shut Down and Restart.
Before Windows starts appearing on the monitor, quickly press the "F8" key.
If you did everything correctly, you will see several different download options listed in white font. Use the up/down arrows to select Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Log into the operating system with Administrator rights.
