    02.12.2016

    Hello friends! Welcome to Andrey and Dasha’s blog – Thebizfromscratch! In today’s article we want to talk about how to set up a broadcast on Twitch or, in professional terms, how to stream on Twitch via obs. If you don’t yet know why this is needed, we suggest you read the publication: . Well, if you are already in the know and you can’t wait to start streaming, then we won’t delay you any longer, and let’s move on to the setup itself.

    Setting up a broadcast on Twitch via OBS

    Before proceeding to setup, you first need to download it to your computer special application for broadcasting. The twitch.tv website offers 3 applications: Open Broadcast Software (OBS), GameShow and XSplit Gamecaster. Any authorized user can find them in the “Information Panel” section.

    Let's set up the display using the first application - OBS. Download it from the official website (weighs about 95 MB) and install it.

    After installation, an icon will appear on the desktop, click on it. The program opens, in the toolbar of which we find the “File” - “Settings” tab.

    And now about each section of the settings in order:

    1. General

    The only thing you need to choose here is the language. Everything else can be left unchanged.

    Choose:

    service – Twitch;

    server – can be left as default;

    stream key is your personal cipher on Twitch. Located in personal account in the “Information Panel” tab - “Broadcast Key”. You can’t show it to anyone, everything is strictly confidential! Copy it and paste it into the desired window.

    Streaming:

    video bitrate – set to 2300. Enough to get a high-quality picture (1280 x 720) without slowdowns (lags);

    encoder – software (x 264);

    audio bitrate – 128.

    The recording settings can be left as default.

    We only configure:

    sampling frequency – 48khz;

    channel – stereo;

    desktop audio device – speakers;

    mic/aluxiliary audio device – microphone.

    The base and output resolution can be left as is, but if you have little powerful computer, then it is better to reduce the output resolution.

    Scaling filter - Lanczos method to get a sharper image.

    FPS (frames per second) values are better than 60, but if lags appear during broadcasting, reduce to 30.

    1. Hotkeys

    There is nothing important in them, you can climb there out of curiosity, but this is not necessary.

    1. Advanced

    We left everything as default.

    All that remains is to configure the “scene” and “sources” and you can stream!

    Let's give a little explanation of these concepts:

    - stage– a profile that combines several sources. Most often it has a name similar to a toy. We're not particularly big on gaming trends and the last thing we played was Need for Speed and Sims... Let's assume that we want to broadcast racing events, then our scene will be named like "ForSpeed".

    - sources– layers that you personally add to a certain scene to make a normal show. For example, if you are playing the same racing game, you need to add a source to the “ForSpeed” scene – game capture + media source (web camera).

    Having just installed the OBS application, there is already a standard empty scene. You can create a new one by clicking on the plus sign or rename an existing one. To do this, right-click on “Scene” and select “Rename”.

    Let's move on to adding sources. Knowledgeable guys will definitely add the following layers:

    — game capture (the game must be turned on at the time of addition);

    — slideshow;

    — media source (web), etc.

    Let's take a step-by-step look at how to add, for example, “game capture” (other layers are added in the same way). For example, we'll take the standard Windows toy – Purble Place

    So!

    If you click on “broadcast”, your game progress will be displayed not only on the application screen, but also on your Twitch channel. Of course, for the desired broadcast you will have to configure and combine the sources you need more than once. It's all a matter of time.

    The main thing is that now you know how to stream on Twitch via obs. We hope that following our instructions you will not have any difficulties and everything will work out. By the way, if you wish, check out the following articles:

    System requirements for streaming on Twitch.

    Keep in mind that this minimum recommended system requirements and a more powerful computer will obviously perform better. Also, don't forget about your internet connection. Twitch's Broadcasting Guide says you'll need to stream between 4,500 and 6,000 kilobits per second for 1080p at 60fps, and 3,500kbps to 5,000kbps for 1080p at 30fps.

    People often buy new computers for streaming; read about how to connect a computer yourself in

    Getting started with OBS Studio

    To start broadcasting on Twitch, you will need OBS Studio (Open Broadcaster Software Studio), which is easy to set up and works well with Twitch.

    Let's look at the program client for Windows, but versions for Mac and Linux are also available.
    So, download and install the program.
    Let's launch.

    You will see a window with a blank screen and a set of functions at the bottom. This is where you'll create a "scene" and specify sources for your broadcast. A scene in OBS Studio is final product, which you will show on Twitch, and the sources are all the different elements that make up your scene.

    Most Twitch game streams are not just a screencast of the game itself. This usually comes from multiple sources, such as an image-in-picture webcam image, a watermark, and sometimes animated screen overlays. Animation is beyond the scope of this beginner's tutorial. We will use four main sources: the game itself, the webcam, sound and watermark.

    How to set up streaming in OBS

    Let's start by adding the most important element to scene: broadcast of the game window.

    Before we do that, though, let's rename our scene to something more appropriate. Right click the item « Scene" in the leftmost pane at the bottom of the OBS window. Select « Rename" and come up with a name. In my example I'm going to stream The Witcher 3, so I named my scene the name of the game.

    Now let's add the game feed. Launch the game, and after it starts, click Alt+Tab, to return to the OBS window. It doesn't matter whether the game is in full screen or windowed mode.

    ADVICE. For convenience, users with multiple monitors can place OBS Studio on a second monitor during the setup process.

    Select " Game Capture"in the sources window.

    Then add new source. Click sign "plus" on the panel « Sources" and select from the menu that appears « Game Capture" . This will open a second window, in it just click OK, to open third window.

    Geralt waits patiently while we set up OBS Studio.

    This is the properties window and adding a game. At the top of the screen, click the drop-down menu next to and select "Zgrab a specific window". and select the .exe file of your game. In my case it's witcher3.exe.

    Once you have selected the EXE file, you should see your stream displayed in the window. There are also a few options you can customize here: experiment with them. Now click « OK", to return to the main OBS Studio window.

    Because OBS Studio is so flexible, Game Capture isn't your only streaming option. You can also transfer your entire desktop rather than just one program.

    How to set up a webcam for streaming

    Adding a webcam stream gives your gameplay individual approach. For Twitch streamers, webcam feeds are standard practice. If your PC does not have a webcam, Logitech C922 is the best option, which is very popular among streamers.

    To set up your camera, click the plus sign in the box « Sources" again, and in context menu select « Video capture device" . Once again a small window appears which you can ignore. Just click OK, to go to the properties window.

    OBS Studio automatically selects your webcam. However, if you have two or more options, just choose the one that suits your broadcast. You can use the settings in this window, but as long as your webcam is selected from the drop-down list at the very top, it should work fine.

    It is very important to determine the shooting angle for your camera. Do you want the viewer to see you from above, directly or below, or maybe in some other way?

    In order to choose where to place the camera, just watch other streamers and choose what you like for yourself.

    If you want your home background not to be visible on the stream, be it a closet or a mountain of clothes on a chair, then you need to use Chroma Key(color key). Those. the same green screen against which films are shot.

    To play with the chroma color settings in OBS Studio, right click on Video Capture Device on the panel « Sources" and select « Filters > Effect Filters > Chroma Key.

    Once your webcam is selected as a source, you can choose where it will be positioned on the broadcast screen. The default is the top left corner, but you can customize it by dragging the window.

    How to set up sound in OBS

    If you don't have a high quality microphone, you can go two ways. The first is to use the headset microphone, as some gamers do.

    Our top pick is the HyperX Cloud Alpha ($100), and our favorite budget option is the Astro A10 ($60). However, most streamers use a desktop microphone, such as the Blue Yeti ($130).

    By default, OBS adds a microphone stream to you, but if you have multiple inputs such as the built-in microphone, webcam microphone, headset microphone, and desktop microphone, you must specify which one you want to use.

    In the section « Mixer" (highlighted in red) find the entry Mic/Aux and press the button cog in the right corner. In the drop down menu "U construction" select your microphone and press « OK".

    Now you can mix different sounds to get correct settings for your flow. Many people lower the volume of game sounds and raise the volume of the microphone so that viewers can hear the streamer better.

    How to add a watermark (channel logo)

    To give your stream an extra layer of professionalism, you can add a watermark—a small logo of your channel that appears in the corner of your TV broadcasts.

    Click the plus sign again in the box "Sources", select « Image" and press « OK", to go to the third window. Select an image from PC and then click OK yet once.

    Back in the main window, click on the watermark image and it will be highlighted in red. Now adjust the location and size. If you want to make the image transparent, right-click on the image and select « Filters" > « Chroma Key". Then select a numeric value (from 0 to 100) in the option Opacity, to make it transparent. You can also play with different sliders to get the effect you want.

    Now that we have the watermark, view the full stream by starting the game. Good looking? All that remains is to stream directly to the Twitch channel.

    How to set up a broadcast from OBS to a Twitch channel

    Twitch is easy to set up. Just go to the site and create a user account. Click on your username on the right top corner, then select from the drop-down menu « Control Panel".

    You can view your stream from the dashboard, but it won't appear until you connect your OBS client to yours account Twitch. To do this, click « Settings" in the left column dashboard. On next page you should see an option in the main part of the window called "Flow Key". Select it and on the next page click on “ Show key" . Copy the code to your clipboard.

    Then open OBS and go to « Settings" in the lower right corner. Next select « Flow". In the section "T stream ip" select « Streaming Services" then in the section « Service" select "Twitch» .

    At this point OBS Studio can run a test to find best server Twitch suitable for your location. If a server is not selected near you, you can select it manually from the drop-down menu "WITHserver" . Finally, copy the stream key into the field marked "Flow Key". Click « Apply" And « OK" , and you're done.

    Now go back and preview your stream in OBS Studio one last time.

    Before you start streaming, go back to your Twitch dashboard and click « Live" in the left column. Under the heading « Flow information" enter a title for your stream and the name of the game, then click « Update information" .

    Return to your desktop, click « Start broadcast" in the main OBS window. You will see that the stream has started. Congratulations!

    Stream directly

    Successful streamers understand how to balance viewer attention. When you stream, you not only play, but also talk to your audience, chatting with the viewer and occasionally checking the OBS window to make sure the stream is working.

    For all of this, you'll definitely want to use a second monitor, since your game will take up all the space on your main monitor - unless you're crazy enough to play the game in windowed mode. If you only have one monitor, you can use your phone () (), tablet or laptop to monitor the chat.

    If your computer is not very powerful, this may help you.
    It will also be useful to understand if you use it one way or another.

    I also personally encountered the problem of games freezing for half a second, even with a very powerful computer, it’s all to blame

    If you have any questions, ask in the comments and good luck on Twitch!

    There are a wide variety of programs for streaming on Twitch and YouTube, let's figure out which one is the best approach for this difficult task. You will learn what streaming programs popular streamers use, their capabilities, and which one is best to choose for yourself.

    Streaming (live broadcasts) for many has become a good pastime that brings in decent money. Today, there are a number of programs for organizing broadcasts of decent quality.

    The best programs for streaming on YouTube and Twitch

    The principle of operation of programs of this kind is the same - the user selects one or several applications, data from which must be sent to the network, and the software independently performs the tasks assigned to it. Let's consider the most popular options for achieving your desired goals.

    How to start streaming on Twitch and YouTube using OBS

    Free software used by thousands of professional streamers. It stands out with a lot of functions. The developers recently released an update called OBS Studio, but the classic version also remains a relevant tool.

    Use of content: it is possible to add an unlimited number of videos, images, audio files, texts. The software captures both a full-screen stream and data from individual windows - browsers, web cameras, etc. The result can be simultaneously transmitted to the network and recorded locally for further use by the author.

    Controls: In order to achieve more convenient real-time control, hot keys are provided to allow you to switch between created scenes.

    Broadcast: by default, profiles of popular streaming services are available in OBS - Twitch, YouTube, etc. The user is provided with tools that allow him to manually add URLs, keys, debug latency, and make other changes.

    Donat: connecting services to collect money and display information from users on the screen is carried out by installing plugins provided by such services.

    Sound: Audio is recorded from the microphone and internal PC channel. If necessary, you can adjust the volume and add separate audio streams, for example, from a player playing background music.

    How is OBS Studio different? This is absolutely new product made from scratch. It has all the features found in the standard version. At the same time, an additional screen has been added to prepare data for broadcast. The application works correctly on others operating systems. A large number of plugins have been added to the starter package.

    Look at other advantages:

    • Images can be positioned manually on the screen;
    • There are more transitions, filters, and additional effects;
    • Scenes and windows are easily transferred from the work area to the air with one click.

    It should be noted that the new functions have increased the load on the hardware, so for owners of weak PCs, a reasonable solution would be to choose classic OBS.

    How to stream on Twitch via obs? First we need to make some settings. Launch OBS, click the settings button in the right corner, go to the “Broadcasting” section, install the broadcasting service, Twitch. On next stage, enter the stream key, to find it out, you must log in to the Twitch website under your account and follow the link https://www.twitch.tv/dashboard/ go to the “Stream Key” section, click show key.

    Which server to choose? It is chosen individually for everyone, try to choose the one that is geographically closer to you. At this point, the basic settings can be considered complete.

    Want to improve your stream quality? Go to the “Output” section, set the video bitrate to 3500, you can also set the video encoding not on the processor (software x264), but on the video card (hardware NVENC), which is available on video cards from Nvidia. You can change the video resolution in the “Video” section; as a rule, the resolution should be 1920x1080.

    Let's start a stream on Twitch, for this we need to add a video capture source, this can be like a desktop, a separate window or a game. Right-click on the source area, select window capture from the list, select the window that we want to broadcast, then click OK. For games, we recommend choosing game capture mode.

    Before you start streaming, click the preview button to make sure everything works, if everything works well, click start broadcast.

    How to start a stream on YouTube? You need to do everything that we described above, only in the “Broadcasting” section we select the YouTube broadcasting service. How to find out the YouTube broadcast key? If you ask, follow this link https://www.youtube.com/live_dashboard it is located at the very bottom, in the “Video Encoder Settings” section. Remember, you cannot share the key, otherwise any user knowing it will be able to broadcast on your channel.

    XSplit is one of the best programs for streaming

    XSplit is a paid software provided by subscription. If OBS has a simpler interface that doesn't have graphic design, then XSplit stands out with its pleasant and stylish design. The program also has all the functions of its competitor described above. Therefore, we will analyze the built-in features that are worth paying attention to.

    Multistreaming: a feature that allows you to send a stream to several services, without any additional tricks or installing plugins.

    Ease of setup: for novice users this point is especially important, because most want to launch the software and immediately start broadcasting.

    XSplit makes this easier. In addition, you can make changes to the bitrate without interrupting the broadcast, which will allow you to quickly debug the quality.

    Working with green screen: V latest builds OBS this opportunity is also present, it appeared in XSplit from version 2.5. Removes the background, allows you to put own video or the image to the background, or leave it completely transparent.

    How is XSplit Gamecaster different? This is a simplified version of the program that only has automatic settings. Created for the so-called easy start. This is what is recommended for “young” streamers. Consumes less resources.

    How to stream on Twitch in GeForce Experience

    GeForce Experience(ShadowPlay) manufacturing company NVIDIA video cards has released an application called GeForce Experience, which allows you to optimize games, reducing the load on your PC's hardware. For streamers common problem are high resource costs when streaming, and therefore installing this software can be good decision to improve picture quality, increase FPS etc.

    How it works - GeForce Experience independently collects information about running games, based on the parameters of the processor and other components, and then reconfigures the system.

    Streaming via ShadowPlay overlay allows you to access the recording and broadcast functions by pressing the “Alt+Z” keys. Twitch and YouTube Live supported. There is a quick replay function. The maximum available resolution is 1080p at a frame rate of 60 fps.

    I would like to immediately note that we liked streaming through GeForce Experience, it’s convenient and always at hand. To start the stream, press the hot keys in the game, to open the Alt+Z menu, press the broadcast mode/start/start button, that’s all, you are live, to end the broadcast, repeat similar steps.

    If you don’t want to bother with broadcast settings, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the program, it’s easy to stream and easy to learn.

    Conclusions

    Open Broadcaster Software and XSplit are two programs that remain the main tools for streaming. The main advantage of OBS is the active community of people who create countless plugins and extensions for the software. XSplit is made by one team of developers, and is not much inferior to its competitor. It relieves the user of the need to closely study the interface, providing a beginner-friendly set of functions.

    Live reporting from an erupting volcano, broadcasting from a festival, commenting on a sports match in public - previously, looking at famous presenters on TV, many only dreamed of being in their place. Today, making your dream come true is easier than ever. It is enough to start a live broadcast, for example, on YouTube - and you are on the air.

    The main thing is to thoroughly understand in advance the question of how to make a stream on YouTube and become familiar with all the intricacies of this process, so that no unforeseen situations arise during the broadcast.

    The main problems that may arise:

    • video slows down;
    • sound disappears.

    The causes of problems in most cases are insufficient speed of your Internet, incorrect settings stream. Therefore, if you are going to stream for the first time, do not rely on chance, be sure to test the broadcast before going on air.

    The first thing you need to stream on YouTube is to have an account on this service. How to open a channel on YouTube is described in detail in this article, and therefore we will not dwell on this process. Moreover, many people who want to stream the channel already have one. Moreover important condition– the service allows you to broadcast only if your channel has a good, untarnished reputation.

    It will also not be superfluous:

    There are two options for live broadcasting:

    Delayed start of broadcast;

    Going online immediately without any extra thought is suitable for experienced streamers.

    A delayed stream can also be called a scheduled broadcast - you indicate in advance the time you will appear on air, you can add a backup stream, and limit access to it.

    Broadcast Presets

    To stream on YouTube, log into your account and then go to the Creative Studio.

    Here in the menu on the left we find an item called “Live Streaming”. Click on it, and then on the “Start” button ( Get started) in the middle of the screen.

    The first and main rule is that your account must be verified. If you haven’t done this yet, the service itself will offer to go through the verification procedure using your phone, and will also check the reputation of your channel.

    We indicate the country we are in, our phone number and how to receive the code: via SMS or voice message. Click the “Submit” button to confirm that all data has been entered correctly.

    “Using the same number, you can verify a maximum of two accounts per year.”

    We enter the resulting code into the window on the next page and the verification procedure is completed. Click “Continue”, accept the terms of use and get to the broadcast control panel, where we can start streaming on Youtube, having previously configured it.

    Camera... motor!...

    Once you have sorted out the verification, you can start broadcasting directly. In order to record a stream on YouTube you will need:

    • Download, install and configure video encoder - special software, which allows you to broadcast your video, sound, etc.
    • Fill out basic information about the broadcast.
    • Pick up optimal settings according to your needs: enable monetization, add tips for viewers, for example, with a link to your website or another channel that you want to advertise.

    First, let's make the necessary settings. In the “Basic information” field at the top, enter the name of the stream (1), below – the description (2). Here we select the category to which our broadcast can be classified and download the appropriate icon.

    In the “Options” under the broadcast window, you can activate the “Enable VCR” function and then viewers will be able to rewind the video, albeit no more than 4 hours, and view their favorite moments if they wish. Also, if you don’t want everyone to have access to the recording after the broadcast, check the box “Make the recording available only via link.”

    Here you can choose whether your broadcast will be broadcast with a delay or not. If you select “Broadcast with the least delay”, you will broadcast virtually in real time. If you select "Reduce buffering time", you will get a better data transmission, but viewers will watch you with a time delay of 30 or 60 seconds, depending on which option you choose.

    You can click on the “Advanced Settings” button and there select other options to your liking.

    This is what the field looks like with tips that can be added to your stream

    Now let's move on to the video encoder. Most popular free program for streaming on YouTube with open source code– OBS (Open Broadcaster Software).

    • XSplit Broadcaster for Windows;
    • Wirecast Play for Windows and Mac.

    Elgato Game Capture HD60 and XSplit Gamecaster are perfect for broadcasting games.

    The operating principle of all programs is largely similar, so let’s look at how to stream to YouTube via obs. Download the program from the official website https://obsproject.com/. Following step-by-step recommendations installer, install and run it. This is what the main program window looks like. We are primarily interested in the settings here, since without them there will be no “movie”, and in the literal sense of the word.

    In the “General” tab, in the “Setting Profile” field, enter the name of your stream. The “Tray icon” and “Minimize to tray” options won’t hurt either. Click “Apply”

    In the “Broadcast setting” tab, select the Streaming Service - YouTube. If a warning appears in red text, click the “Optimize” button at the bottom.

    Select the start time of the stream. If this is “Today and Now,” then we will be offered to immediately start a live broadcast and conduct a video meeting using Hangouts. Since this does not suit us, we select “Broadcast Type” - “Special” and click “Create Event”.

    On the page that appears, we configure the number of cameras, indicate the maximum bitrate of the video encoder that it supports and select the program itself with which we will work. For OBS, select the “Other video encoders” option. After which the “Url of the main server”, “Url of the backup server” will appear, where the service will transmit the data, as well as the “Name of the stream”.

    “Stream name” is copied and pasted into the “Play Path/Stream Key” field in the OBS settings. We configure other parameters based on your needs.

    Then in the main program window we add sources. For example, if we are streaming a game, we launch it, and then right-click on the “Sources” field and select “Add”. From the list that appears, select what exactly we want to add.

    Now the main thing is not to forget to start the stream both in the program and on YouTube itself.
    That's it! We figured out how to start a broadcast on YouTube - you can go live.

    During the broadcast you will be able to:

    • Communicate with your viewers and respond to comments;
    • By using YouTube Analytics track how many viewers are watching you.

    Be careful with music for streaming on YouTube, because if you decide to soundtrack the broadcast with compositions for which you do not have the rights, you can get into trouble. After all, it is well known that video hosting carefully monitors compliance with copyright.
