• How to speed up a USB port, what reasons are hidden behind the low speed of their operation? Increasing the speed of a flash drive

Nowadays, you won’t surprise anyone with a flash drive, they are everywhere - from the very simple phone to the camera. And every year the capacity and speed of flash drives are improving. By the way, tips on choosing a flash drive can be found here. But is there any way to further increase the speed of the flash drive? I became interested in this issue after purchasing a 12 megapixel camera, on which saving photos in full resolution is far from instantaneous, because... The size of the latter is not small. Purchasing a high-speed flash drive of speed class 10 helped a little. The speed class primarily depends on the controller and memory chips, but there is another parameter that affects the speed - the cluster size.

Is it possible to increase the speed of a flash drive?

A little theory. When formatting a flash drive, its entire memory is divided into cells - clusters. The smaller the cluster size, the more such cells and, accordingly, the more requests to read a record. For example, we have a 1000 byte flash drive with a cluster size of 4 bytes, i.e. divided into 250 cells. When writing a file of 1000 bytes, the flash drive controller will perform 250 write operations. If you increase the cluster size to 8 bytes, the number of operations will be reduced to 125, i.e. 2 times, which should have a positive effect on speed. But this is in theory. How does the cluster size affect the flash speed in practice? Let's conduct a small experiment comparing the speeds of flash drives with different sizes cluster. For comparison, we use the Cristal Disk Mark program. By the way, different file systems have their own set of possible cluster sizes. The largest is in exFAT, the smallest is in NTFS:

First, let's compare systems of the FAT family with a cluster size of 4Kb and 1Mb (1024 Kb). In the test, we are more interested in the second line, which displays the read-write speed of 512Kb blocks, since flash drives are mainly used for large files (there is no point in increasing the cluster size when storing small files):

As you can see, the recording speed has increased by 40%. Rejoicing, I inserted the flash drive into the camera, but alas, it didn’t see it in exFAT format :-(. I was also not pleased with the writing speed when copying a file on a computer, because the difference was only 1 MB/s:

The same picture is observed when comparing in NTFS format (although there are minor changes):

What cluster size to choose for a flash drive

Everything is explained by the fact that a flash drive has no moving parts and the access speed to any cluster is instantaneous (that’s why) so in my opinion, you shouldn’t bother too much with the question of what cluster size to choose for a flash drive (I didn’t check it on USB 1.1, because there is no such flash drives). If you use it for large files (images, music and videos), choose a larger cluster size; if for small ones, then choose a smaller one, because when writing, for example, 8 files of 5 bytes each (40 bytes in total) into 8 KB clusters, they will take up 64 KB on a flash drive instead of 40 bytes, because each file will occupy one cluster. And finally, comparative graphs of exFAT and NTFS with different cluster sizes (maybe someone will be interested):

The red line on the graph is the write speed, the green line is reading blocks from 1 KB to 16 MB. On the right, one exFAT plot is superimposed on an NTFS plot.

Read how to configure optimal performance external drive or flash drives and speed up data transfer to external media information and reading from it. Computer devices surround us everywhere. They help solve a variety of problems. It's hard to imagine where the opportunities aren't being exploited yet computer devices.

    Content:

    The essence of the problem

Stationary personal computers have become widely used and extremely popular. Thanks to innovative solutions and modern materials used to create computers, their capabilities are expanding day by day. Users use personal computers for work and leisure. Having enormous data processing speed and having massive disk space for storing information, they are indispensable assistants, both for office and production needs, and for study and entertainment.

With the development of worldwide computer network Internet and the availability of modern information technology are gaining no less popularity, in lately, mobile and portable data processing devices: communicators and laptops, including their derivatives (netbooks, ultrabooks, tablets).

Having fewer capabilities, they captivate users with their mobility and access to their own data anywhere.

One of the main internal components computer devices are hard drives. Having a significant amount of memory (primarily stationary personal computers and laptops), they can process and store a gigantic amount of data.

In addition to basic data processing and storage devices, external plug-in drives have become widely popular. They are used to store archival personal information, create a backup copy or exchange work files used by users in daily life for their activities.

It is not surprising that with such an extensive offer of computer devices, one of the main parameters of paramount importance is the speed of data transfer and exchange between devices.

Transfer data between internal storage personal computer And external storage is one of the most common tasks that a user performs. Any data: photos, videos, important files, data backups, work and personal documents - they all need to be transferred back and forth, sometimes several times.

This is why slow transfer speeds can cause feelings of frustration and irritation. Nobody wants to spend extra time waiting for the transfer of several gigabytes of data, and sometimes this is not possible (for example, you are late for an important meeting or need data right now). Luckily there are several simple ways increase data transfer speed.

Install "USB drive" for optimal performance

operating system "Windows" sets the value of the deletion policy parameter for "USB drives" to position « Quick removal(default)". This parameter disables recording caching on the device and system "Windows", which slows down the data transfer speed, but allows you to safely turn off the device without using the service.

To disable this feature and configure "USB drive" For optimal performance, follow these steps: Open File Explorer "Windows" by double-clicking the shortcut "This computer", located on the desktop. In the file explorer window, select the required one from the list of available disks and partitions "USB drive"(it must be previously connected to your personal computer) and right-click on it. In the pop-up menu that opens, select from the list possible actions chapter "Properties".

In the drive properties window, go to the tab "Equipment". In the section "All disks" mark your drive, and then in the section "Device Properties" click the button "Properties".

In the new properties window that opens, select the tab "Policy" and set the switch to the cell, setting the drive parameters to the appropriate settings. Then click the button "OK" to save the changes made.

Additionally, you can access the menu for managing device removal policy settings from the application "Disk Management". Open the pop-up menu by pressing the keyboard shortcut together "Windows + X" or by right-clicking on the button "Start" located in the lower left corner of the desktop on "Taskbars", and select the section from the list of available applications "Disk Management".

Further actions are similar to those described above. Go all the way and then in the tab "Policy" activate the cell.

However, remember that if you enable this feature, you will have to mandatory, use the icon in the notification area. Failure to do so may result in complete data loss or failure. "USB drive".

Or you can use the second option. Right-click on an empty space on your desktop and bring up a pop-up menu. Find a section "Create" and expand the submenu. Select a section from the options offered. "Label".

Enter the following path in the field and click the button "Next" to continue:

    %windir%\System32\control.exe hotplug.dll

Give the shortcut a name and click the button "Ready" to complete the shortcut creation process.

This shortcut directly opens the window « Safe removal devices", which you can use to disconnect your storage device from your computer.

    Change the file system

The file system you use when formatting your drive can affect its performance. Most devices come preset with conservative formatting settings from the factory that distribute data into small distribution units, which in turn maximizes storage capacity. However, increasing the size of these units can improve drive performance.

If you are using an operating system "Windows", then you'll want to use the format file system "NTFS" with distribution unit size "2048 kilobytes". This is the most quick configuration for a modern personal computer based on operating system "Windows". If you need to use the drive on devices based on "DOS", "Mac OS X", "Linux" or perhaps you will connect it to a TV, then select the file system "FAT", in which you can install maximum size distribution units "64 kilobytes".

Perform the formatting process using standard operating system capabilities "Windows", quite simple. Find on your desktop and open file explorer "Windows" "My computer", right click your "USB drive" and open the pop-up menu. Select a section from the list of possible actions "Format". A format window will open in which you can select the required file system and set the required allocation unit size. Assign each parameter the desired value, and then click the button "Begin" to start the formatting process. Please remember that your actions will delete all data stored on the selected device. Therefore, before starting formatting, be sure to make sure that the device does not contain important data, so as not to permanently lose it. If necessary, save the required files before formatting the device.

Disable mode "Legacy USB" V "BIOS"

Extremely slow transfer speeds are sometimes caused by internal function settings "BIOS", called "Legacy USB", which may limit the data transfer rate. This feature is designed to ensure compatibility of your personal computer with older "USB devices", which might not work otherwise.

Exact steps to disable the mode "Legacy USB" will depend on the motherboard used in your computer. But here we have provided some basic recommendations. First you will need to log in "BIOS", which in most cases is done by pressing a button "F12" or "Delete" when your computer is just starting to boot (if you see the operating system loading screen in front of you "Windows", then you missed the moment of accessing the BIOS, you will have to restart the computer and try again).

After that in the settings "BIOS" find the section "Advanced" or "Drives" and then find the support settings setting "Legacy USB". If the setting is enabled or is in automatic mode, then disable it, save the settings and restart the computer. For more specific instructions, check your motherboard manufacturer's support website.

Please note that turning off the mode "Legacy USB" may make it impossible for you to use some outdated software on your personal computer. "USB devices".

    Upgrade to

Newest "USB standard" appeared a few years ago, but many people still use devices with the standard "USB 2.0". This is because newer drives "3.0", as a rule, are more expensive, so they are not yet very widespread. Many sellers have a very wide selection of discs "USB 2.0", because they are more accessible and, as a result, more popular.

The main reason why you need to upgrade drives to the standard is a significant increase in data transfer speed. We set up a small experiment by copying the same amount of files onto standard drives "2.0" (Kingston Data Traveler G3) And "3.0". The new drive significantly outperformed more than old model by moving the folder size "2.11 GB" eight times faster (10 minutes 23 seconds for the drive "USB 2.0" versus 1 minute 16 seconds for the drive).

However, switching to the standard requires more than just having a drive "3.0". Your computer must also have ports. Desktop PC users can upgrade by purchasing a new motherboard or, if your current motherboard still suits your needs, purchasing and installing a controller "USB 3.0 PCIe". Laptop users can add the required connectors using "ExpressCard". However, many laptops do not support this feature, so you may have no choice but to buy new laptop with built-in connectors.

Replace the old drive with a new one

SSDs become slower as they are used, as repeated read/write cycles wear out the available memory cells, rendering some of them unusable. The drive controller can compensate to some extent by reducing the speed. However, eventually, after severe wear and tear, the drive will stop working altogether.

This problem does not affect expensive solid state "SSD drives", but cheap plug-in removable "USB flash drives" often not designed for as many read/write cycles as an internal drive. Therefore, excessive and heavy use of the drive can lead to its breakdown and final failure.

If you notice that your drive has slowed down significantly and typical solutions have not resolved the problem, then replacing it completely may be your only option.

Today, flash drives are the most common storage medium: memory capacity up to 256GB and high transfer speed, which depends on the USB port. Older computers and laptops may have a low-speed USB 1.0 or 1.1 port. The most common connector is USB 2.0 with high speed data transfer. USB 3.0 port is the fastest.

How to increase the speed of a flash drive - various ways

    Advice

The bios password can be found in the manual. motherboard or your system administrator.

    Please note

Each BIOS manufacturer ( American Megatrends, Award Software, Phoenix Technologies) the main menu looks different, but the names of the main parameters are similar. Points and visual design may also differ slightly from its version.

Method 3: Check the operating system

    What do we need

    • Computer, minimal knowledge of WINDOWS OS.

    Instructions

    1. Check the operating system for viruses:
    a. Antivirus;

    2. Look in the task manager which process is loading the system and end it.

    3. You should also check the driver version by going to the device manager.

    Advice

Terminate processes in the task manager only if completely confident in your actions. You can update drivers on the official website of your motherboard manufacturer.

    Please note
The speed of writing and reading a flash drive directly depends on the overall performance of the operating system. Viruses and other malicious software can slow down your computer's speed. software and resource-intensive processes. In some cases it can only help complete reinstallation systems.

Method 4. Problems with the flash drive itself

    What do we need

    • Computer, flash drive, minimal knowledge of WINDOWS OS.

    Instructions

    1. Search for possible defects in the file system of the flash drive.

    a. Open My Computer

    c. In the menu that opens, select "Properties"
    d. Go to tab "Service"

    e. Press the button "Run check..."
    f. Check the available items in the window that opens
    g. Press the button "Launch"

    2. Also try formatting the flash drive to standard mode by right-clicking on it and selecting the appropriate menu item.

    Advice

When formatting, increase the cluster size - the larger it is, the higher the write/read speed when working with flash memory. Change the file system to NTFS - the most reliable and fault-tolerant today.

    Please note
Formatting will destroy all data stored on the flash drive, so save it on your computer before formatting.

When a user starts copying files to a flash drive, you can sometimes notice that the copying speed is quite low. In modern Windows versions it is usually shown as a graph and a numerical value. My speed usually reaches up to 6-7 Mb/s, and often jumps up and down. If there are problems, the speed may not be higher than 600 Kb/s, or somewhere in these values. For a normal flash drive, this indicator is unacceptable.

Let's look at the reasons for this phenomenon and try to figure out a solution to the problem.

    Flash drive properties

When using a flash drive purchased for 200 rubles, you will not see high read and write speeds. This suggests that no matter what port you use on your computer, the increase may not occur. You can try using the program and check maximum speed flash drives. You can use it to test hard drives and SSD. The results will show exactly the maximum speed, which may differ greatly from what is written on the box. You shouldn't count on more.

    Using high speed USB ports

If your laptop has a couple of USB 3.0 ports, then you should definitely use them. Typically, if you connect a device to a low-speed port, the system notifies you with a notification. If you connected a flash drive that has USB capabilities 3.0 to port 2.0, then fast speeds not worth the wait.

In the case of desktop computer, you can try connecting the USB flash drive to the rear panel of the system unit.

Also, the extender can limit the copying speed. The longer it is, the lower the speed.

    Poor computer performance

If you are still using old equipment that is 7-8 years old, and the characteristics RAM And hard drive expect much to be desired, then only upgrading your PC will help increase the speed of reading and writing on a flash drive.

    Crooked drivers

If you just inserted a brand new flash drive, the installation of controller drivers will begin immediately. If they don't stand up as they should, then wait slow speed reading record. In this case, the only option would be .

You still need to update the drivers motherboard, if you haven't done this yet. You can download what you need from the official website of your board manufacturer, or using special programs, DriverMax type, DriverPack Solution or SlimDrivers.

To reinstall USB controller drivers, you need to go to the device manager. This can be done as follows: right-click on the Start menu and select the corresponding item. You can also press Win+R and enter the command devmgmt.msc.

We find the section “ USB controllers", open it and remove the drivers for the following devices – "Root USB Hub" And "Extensible Host Controller...".

After deleting, click the “Action” tab at the top and select the item "Update hardware configuration".

    Removed drivers should install automatically.

Programs to increase the read/write speed of flash drives

Subject to availability good computer with performance characteristics, but with a flash drive that has low copy performance, you are unlikely to be able to greatly increase the speed by using utilities.

If you copy many small files, then in order for them to be copied many times faster, you need to place them in an archive.

The program will help to slightly increase the copying process. Free and with simple interface it will help you improve your copying speed a little. If copying fails, you can continue from where you left off.

Well, that's all. Maybe you have other options for answering the question why files are copied to a flash drive slowly?

    Instructions

Connect the media to the USB port on the motherboard. In this case, data transfer goes directly through the USB controller to the processor and hard drive. If you connect flash drive into the connectors on the front (side, top) panel of the case, data is supplied to the motherboard through the board of the case itself.

Disable antivirus software if you are confident that the data being transferred is “clean”. Powerful antiviruses control all processes occurring in the operating system, including the processes of reading from and writing to media. The antivirus will scan data on the fly, which slows down speed transfers. Do not also forget that many programs that are included in the operating system load the personal computer.

Conversely, make sure your computer is free of viruses. Install effective antivirus. Many viruses are written into the media startup file and are activated the moment the media is connected, which will affect data transfer. Some media may be blocked by your computer due to viruses.

Write archived files to storage media. If you need to record a whole list of small files, combine them into one archive. IN in this case is important for saving space due to file compression, and the process itself transfers data: one file will be written much faster than a set of small ones of the same size. Regularly format your storage media and clean up unnecessary information. An excess of small files and bad sectors significantly worsen the perception of a USB flash drive by the operating system. It is best to format the storage medium at least once a month in order to completely remove viruses, temporary files, and unnecessary information.

Adjust the network access channel load to maximize the possible upload speed. Close all programs that use your network connection except the torrent client. Disable instant messengers, download managers, and your web browser. Also disable applications running in background. Open the tray and close them. Launch the task manager, and then disable programs that have update in their name - these applications are currently downloading updates. Do not launch these applications until you decide to stop transferring files. If there is a need to use a browser, use it only with disabled images, as well as with a ban on flash download And java applications.

You can often hear questions about how to find out speed flash drives. This information is difficult to obtain from manufacturers. That's why they were developed special utilities, which help to test flash drives.

    You will need

    • Personal computer, Check Flash, CrystalDiskMark or HD_Speed

    Instructions

The first program is called Check Flash. Using this utility you can easily test speed any . Download this program. Launch on . Insert into USB. Program interface. In the “Access type” item, select the “As logical drive” tab. In the “Drive” column, you need to select the drive on which it is located, that is, indicate the item for it. For example, F:. In "Action type" select "Write and read test" and "Small pattern set". Click "Start". The entire process has started.

There is another simple utility called HD_Speed. It is small and does not require special installation. Download and run HD_Speed. She is capable of any media. In the program settings, select the disk to check where the flash drive itself is located. Select in the “Drive” column the path to flash drives. Check the “Read” box. Click "Start". And now wait for the result of the program.

CrystalDiskMark also detects well speed work flash drives. To do this, download the program and run it. A window will open in front of you. Click on the "File" tab and open required disk with a flash drive. The program will show all necessary information.

Flash utility Memory Toolkit will not only help you with removable storage media data, but also, if necessary, can restore lost files and create backup copies. To get started, launch the program. In the window that opens at the top, select the drive. To receive general information O flash device Click “Info” in the left column. In order to find out speed, click the "File Benchmark" tab and click "Start". Now wait a couple of seconds and get the result. You will be able to determine speed work flash drives.

Information about flash devices can also be found using the Everest program. Download it and run it. Under the program's Toolbar, click Menu. Scroll through the list and click the Device tab. This way you can easily find out the data about the flash drive. Using any program, you can easily assess the real state of the flash device.

Storage devices in modern world are constantly being improved: the sizes are becoming smaller, and the speed is becoming higher. We have already abandoned floppy disks, the era of CDs and DVDs is gradually passing, and only the well-known “flash drive” remains relevant in terms of storage media. Each new model everything is smaller, more capacious and faster, but at the same time it is “like a new product” and is always more expensive than its “older brothers”. Does it make sense to overpay? For example, you can’t always try to increase the speed yourself.

    You will need

    • computer, flash drive, minimal knowledge of computer and WINDOWS operating system

    Instructions

First of all, make sure that your device and the operating system on it are in good working order, since up to 90% of all speed problems can be related to this. If necessary, reinstall the system, pay special attention to installing drivers for USB 2.0, since they also affect correct work external storage devices. After that, enter the BIOS, go to the “USB Configuration” item and activate the “USB 2.0 Controller” item by selecting the “enabled” command, in the “USB 2.0 Controller Mode” item that appears, select “FullSpeed” (or “HiSpeed”). The flash drive will operate at the highest possible speed.

If with computer equipment and the software is fine, eliminate the possibility of possible defects in the file system of the flash drive, to do this, check it for errors: go to the “flash drive properties”, the “service” tab, and click on the “check” button, check the boxes available for this in the the window that opens. Also try formatting in standard mode by right-clicking on it and selecting the appropriate menu item.

Change the file system of the flash drive to NTFS, the most reliable and fault-tolerant file system today, sometimes this increases the speed of work especially with flash drives large capacity and when working with large files. When formatting, increase the size of the flash memory cluster, as the larger size cluster, the higher the write/read speed when working with flash memory. To do this, find the “Run” tab in the “Start” menu, enter the command “cmd” in the window that opens command line enter a space: Format X: /FS: Y /A: Z (where “X” is the disk volume, “Y” is the file system: FAT, FAT32, NTFS, “Z” is the cluster size). Instead of X, enter the label of the disk volume (G, F, etc.), instead of “F”, write the name of the file system (FAT, FAT32, NTFS), and in place of Z, enter the cluster size (the default is 4K, the maximum possible is 64K.

When loading specific file from the Internet, it is interesting to learn about the speed, as well as the time that you will have to wait until the entire operation is completed. This can be done using special software.

    Instructions

There is a large list of various software on the Internet that allows you to see in real time speed transfers data. One of the popular utilities is Download Master. This program spreads completely . You can find it on the Internet or install it from the disk on which the operating system distribution kit is located with installation of programs in WPI mode.

Install this software on the hard drive of your personal computer. For convenience, install to the system local disk so that the program and all downloads are on one local disk. In case of emergency, you can do backup copy and quickly restore information without any loss. A shortcut will appear on the desktop with which you can open the main program window.

An icon will also appear in the tray, which, when new download will display the current process. Open the program by double-clicking the left mouse button on the shortcut. In your browser, locate the file you need to download. Right-click on the link and context menu select “Copy link address”. The download is automatically integrated into the program window. You only need to click the "Download" button.

This software allows up to 10 downloads at a time, but the list of pending files can be endless. Next to each downloaded file will be displayed speed downloads, as well as the time it will take to complete. At the top of the program there is a small graph that displays the maximum and minimum speed download all files. You can leave a description for the file so that you don’t get confused later if there are a large volume of files.

You can increase your reading speed with five simple methods. In this case, it is important to take the correct position - straight posture, your left hand slightly supporting the book. In addition, there are a number of additional recommendations that will help increase your speed and reading comprehension.

There is an opinion that people have begun to read less books. If previously almost all adults read books, now there is a transition to audio books and watching films. This is a fact, since reading fiction develops imaginative thinking and helps a person to more fully understand the world around him.

Reading speed directly affects the number of books read. The reading foundation is laid in us during our school years, but even at retirement age we can increase the number of words we read per minute if we really want to.

In order to master the technique quick reading, you need to take the correct body position - straight posture, the book is lightly held with your left hand, and your right hand is used for the exercise.

It is important to know that even if you start to read quickly, but do not comprehend what you read, it will not be of any use. Then you will have to work with your perception speed, or give up trying to increase your reading speed.
Before you start working with the text, you need to familiarize yourself with it in order to understand what the main idea is, in what style the work is written, etc.

At the moment, there are five main methods that can help increase reading speed when used independently.

These methods can be called: “Hand”, “Card”, “Sweeping”, “Jump”, “Zigzag”.
In the first case, the right hand constantly moves down the text. At the same time, the eyes do not follow her, but continue to read. Unconsciously, reading will be done faster, as the eyes will follow the hand, which is in a constant downward movement.

In the second case, a card is used that covers the text that is at the top. You move it down to the line you are reading. This will make you read it to the end faster.

Sweeping method. Use three fingers to follow the line and periodically make a movement, as if sweeping away salt. Your eyes will follow your fingers faster, increasing your reading speed.

When “Jumping”, everything is done the same as when sweeping, only on each line two blows are made with three connected
fingers of the right hand - at the beginning and end.

"Zigzag". This method is suitable for materials that do not require thorough study. Three lines are taken, circled by hand, and some words are read out so that you can understand the meaning of what is being conveyed. Experts do not recommend resorting to this method, if Sweep and Jump have not been mastered.
