    Overclocking a video card with NVIDIA Inspector

    And yet, the main purpose for which users install NVIDIA Inspector for free is to increase performance (or “overclocking” and “overclocking”). NVIDIA Inspector for GeForce 9 allows you to achieve an overclock of 10-20%. Of course, this will not solve the issue radically, but replacing an old video card with a more powerful one can be postponed for some time.

    Let's talk a little about what facts you need to know before overclocking your video card. There is no point in overclocking a video card if the system is not balanced (weak processor or insufficient RAM) or not optimized (outdated or incorrectly configured drivers, as well as many programs running in the background that can slow down anything).

    Also some people ask the question: “ What is the performance gain after overclocking a video card?"- the increase is small, but it all depends on the capacity of your card.

    Video cards are divided into 3 types:

    • office (the cheapest and least productive)
    • budget (mid price range and average performance)
    • gaming (expensive and high-performance)

    The real performance gain after a “correct” overclock is from 10 to 50 (if you’re very lucky) percent, for example 10-30 frames per second. Theoretically, the ideal option for overclocking are all kinds of overclocking samples produced by leading manufacturers.
    This question often comes up: Is it dangerous to overclock a video card?- because Overclocking a video card means exceeding its operating factory specifications, then purely theoretically there is a certain probability of the video card failing. But it all depends on your skill level - with competent actions, the risk of this sad event is small, and with illiterate actions, it is almost guaranteed. The greatest likelihood of a video card failing is a consequence of insufficient cooling of both the GPU itself and the video memory, which can burn out if overheated for a long time.

    Another scary fact: “ Reducing the lifespan of an overclocked video card" This is true - the service life of any microcircuit directly depends on its operating temperature. It is believed that exceeding the normal operating temperature by 10°C reduces the life of the microcircuit by half.

    Let's start overclocking, there will be several stages:

    1. Launch NVIDIA Inspector and click on the button Show Overclocking, after which a warning window will appear in English stating that overclocking can lead to damage to the video card. If you still want to start overclocking, click “Yes” and the program window will expand, revealing the control sliders.

    In the second half of the program that opens we find Performance Level (P0). This is what we will be setting up.

    Performance Level (P8 and/or P12) does not need to be changed, because P8 is 2D graphics mode and P12 is power saving mode

    2. The program has about six parameters to change, these are Base Clock Offset, Memory Clock Offset, Shader Clock Offset, Voltage Offset and Fan. There is also a Power and Temperature Target parameter that allows you to change the power of the video card.

    2.1. Using the slider to the parameters Base Clock Offset, Memory Clock Offset and Shader Clock Offset, we “by eye” add 5-10% of the standard frequency. Then you need to press the button Apply Clocks & Voltage.

    2.1.1. If nothing happened (or the computer might stop responding or the video card driver might reset), then the next step would be...

    2.1.2. ...launch your favorite game, play a little.

    2.1.3. If during the game you encountered so-called artifacts or the game crashed and the video card driver was reset, then you need to reduce the frequency by about -10 MHz in the three parameters that we touched on in paragraph 2.1.

    2.1.4. If nothing like this has been encountered, then you can also add frequencies by +10 MHz; if all is well, then you can add a little more frequencies. If everything is bad, we return to point 2.1.3.

    2.2. Voltage Offset parameter - or voltage boost. In overclocking video cards, overclocking is carried out by adding voltage to the added frequencies, because the power and quality of video card components can allow for more efficient overclocking. In other words, by increasing the frequency, the video card may not have enough voltage to operate at these frequencies. An increase should only be made if the video card is powerful enough.

    2.3. Fan parameter - allows you to set a fixed fan rotation value in percentage. There is also an automatic change in rotation speed depending on the temperature of the graphics core. You should always check the box Auto, because a fixed fan speed creates additional noise and is only necessary in cases where the video card is operating at the limit of its capabilities in " hard games", and if the checkbox is checked to automatically change the fan speed, then the video card driver will control the temperature itself and, if necessary, will add speed to reduce it, so the cooler will not make noise when you are working in office programs.

    2.4. After all manipulations, always press Apply Clocks & Voltage, and if you suspect that something is wrong and are afraid to confirm it, you can reset everything you did by pressing the button Apply Defaults. Some parameters in the program may be blocked from changing, because... they directly depend on the hardware component of the video card.

    There is one nuance in overclocking through this program; overclocking through it is carried out at the driver level, and not at the hardware level ( Video card BIOS), so after reboot Windows all yours set values will reset. This problem is solved like this: after successful overclocking (100% confidence that there are no artifacts or constant driver resets), click on the button Create Startup, a shortcut should appear on your desktop containing your overclocked values. Before starting your favorite game, just click double click using this shortcut (nothing opened?, that’s how it should be) and you can start the game.

    For video card overclocking to work after restarting Windows, right-click on Create Clock Startup Task and select from the list Create Startup Shortcut.

    There are many other programs to overclock your video card, such as MSI Afterburner, NVIDIA System Tools, EVGA Precision X, etc., but NVIDIA Inspector is the simplest and most functional program for this purpose.
