• Safe removal function. Safely Removing Your Device

Most computer and laptop users know that a USB drive must not only be pulled out of the port to end its use in the system, but also launched special procedure so-called safe extraction. If the flash drive is removed without safe removal, the consequences can be catastrophic (data loss, errors file system and even breakdown of the device itself). Let's consider several simple methods that allow you to carry out such a procedure, as well as restore such Windows tool, if for some reason it disappeared or became unavailable.

Safely removing a flash drive: why is this necessary?

When removing a USB drive from the corresponding slot on a computer terminal, it is important to understand one thing. Safe removal USB flash drives in Windos 10 or any other similar system standard procedure shutdown of the computer itself.

In this case, all processes associated with the device are terminated and power is cut off. In this way, the drive can be protected from many problems. An analogue could be turning off a running computer from the network. Many people have noticed that after this the system recovery begins. So it is here, only you will have to restore functionality manually, which can turn out to be much more difficult than automated processes on Windows.

Basic Methods for Safely Removing USB Devices

So, you can safely remove a flash drive using several of the most simple methods, which are provided in Windows systems.

The most in a simple way is to left-click on the USB icon in the system tray and select the corresponding line. If the icon is not displayed for some reason, you need to click on the up arrow to show hidden icons.

The second method that allows you to safely remove a flash drive is to use “Explorer” or double-click on the computer icon where the USB device is selected, and right-click to select the extraction option in the menu. Most people have no questions about this.

Safely removing a flash drive: USB Safely Remove program

In some cases, if someone does not like the standard method, you can use small program called USB Safely Remove (this is useful in cases where the system reports that access to the device cannot be terminated, or the device icon is missing in the tray).

After installation, the program creates its own icon in the tray in the form of clicking on which, you can see all USB devices, in at the moment connected to computer system. There is also a section hidden devices(USB camera, external network cards, disks, etc.). Just select your drive and indicate how to safely remove the flash drive.

    Terminating processes using the drive

Sometimes, however, the system produces an error. In this case, you should close all files open from the device and applications that are currently using the drive, go to the “Task Manager” and forcefully terminate all USB-related processes.

In this case, you should first use display of all user processes, then hide Microsoft services. After this, the extraction can be repeated.

What should I do if I no longer have access to Safe Retrieval?

Now let's see what to do if it is no longer possible to safely remove the flash drive both from the system tray and from the device properties in the computer or Explorer section.

In the simplest case, you need to open the properties of the drive in any of the above sections or in the corresponding manager and go to the hardware tab. In the window you need to select your device and click on the properties button located below. Next, click the change properties button and go to the policy tab, where you can see a hyperlink to safe extraction. Click on it, and the flash drive can be removed. At the same time, by the way, the operation of the drive will also speed up.

Alternative technique for restoring safe extraction

There is another way that allows you to restore the original settings so that you can then safely remove the flash drive.

This option is somewhat more complicated, but it provides an almost one hundred percent guarantee of restoring access to the procedure. To do this, use the “Run” console call with administrator rights.

It needs to include the following:

    • RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll (necessarily exactly as specified in the original command above).

After executing the command, a new dialog box will appear in which you must first select the device you are looking for, and then click the “Stop” button at the bottom.

    Instead of a total

In principle, these are the main methods that allow you to safely remove any USB device from the corresponding port, as well as eliminate some possible problems associated with the impossibility of performing such a procedure due to lack of access. In the simplest case, you can simply remove the device from the port and reinsert it. Perhaps the system will see it.

However, such methods are only suitable for standard situations and are the simplest for users. If the drive initially has physical damage or file system failures, you will have to use completely different methods related to restoring the functionality of the drive, the information stored on it, or even re-flashing its microcontroller. But this is a separate topic.

Safely Remove Hardware - Part Name in operating system Windows, which serves to prepare the device for removal. This component is represented by the file hotplug.dll, and cannot be found in the Taskbar.

Before answering the question of whether to use this function, you need to understand the principle of its operation...

Any copied files in Windows OS are first saved in the so-called “cache” (RAM, short-term memory), and then they are completely copied to the media or hard drive. The process of writing files to the cache is called precopying. The thing is about this copying regular user and has no idea.

In the process of copying files to a USB drive, exactly the same thing happens - the files are first transferred to the computer's memory, and then to the flash drive itself. Sometimes supposedly copied files on a flash drive may have a corresponding original file volume, name and format, but if you remove the flash drive without using the “safe removal” function, there is a low probability of data damage - in the future, an attempt to open the copied file from the flash drive will be unsuccessful.

Interesting feature observed in the difference in the method of operation of “safe removal” in Windows XP and Vista: in the first version, when the function is activated, the power of the flash drive is turned off, but when the function is activated in Vista, it does not.

Do I need to safely remove the flash drive? Possible problems

Modern technologies for protecting local data from corruption are evolving, so there is no real need to use the Safely Remove Hardware function, but, nevertheless, it remains an integral feature of any of the operating systems released by Microsoft.

Interesting fact: Fear about using this feature among iPod users first surfaced when speculation began to surface that using this feature on Windows Vista damages iPod data.

The need to use the function becomes even lower if you consider that the “caching” function is disabled on the computer - when files are not copied to the cache, but directly to removable media, then there is no point in retrieving them safely.

Common cause The unsuccessful activation of the "safe removal" function is the fact that one of the files on removable media is still used by the local machine (even opened in Word document may prevent “safe removal”). This “bug,” if you can call it one, has led to the emergence of many “1 Click Safely Remove Device” apps that automatically close all files in use and save them before activating the Safely Remove feature.

Today, flash drives have become a part of our lives. Such small devices that take up little space and can be taken with you everywhere, carrying mountains with you necessary information. But when using flash drives you need to work with them correctly, and one of the issues that needs to be resolved is safely remove the flash drive from the computer.

By not removing the flash drive from the computer correctly, we can not only lose important data, but also completely break the flash drive. By improper removal I mean simply pulling it out of the port. Due to such actions, it may begin to be read with errors, data may be lost, or it may simply break.

To avoid such problems, let me tell you how safely remove the flash drive from the computer. Every time before you remove the flash drive from the USB port on system unit, you must first remove it from the system itself.

How to safely remove a flash drive?

    Go to “My computer".

And we are looking for our flash drive here. It is usually displayed at the very bottom, after all hard drives and disk drives. After the flash drive is found, right-click on it and select “ Eject” from the menu that opens.

The flash drive is safely removed, all that remains is to carefully pull it out of the USB port.

Also remove the flash drive without going to “My Computer”. In the notification area, this is where the clock is located, there is a special icon in the form of a flash drive with a check mark.

Please note that this icon appears only when we have at least one flash drive inserted into the computer, otherwise it is missing. Or perhaps there is no icon next to the clock at all, even if the flash drive is inserted. Maybe it is hidden, you need to click on the arrow to show it.

By clicking on this icon, we can remove any flash drive by selecting its name in the list that opens.

A couple of seconds later, after removing the flash drive, a prompt will appear that you can now remove the flash drive from the USB port without the risk of losing data and other consequences.

Methods for removing a flash drive have now been described. standard means Windows. You can also use it separately installed programs. I know one of these, it's called USB Safely Remove. When we install it, it will appear in our notification area green arrow, clicking on it will display all devices that are connected via USB and can be removed.

There is also another button here “ Hidden devices».

If we click on it, a window will open where we can see those devices that are also connected via USB, but they are not displayed either in the notification area or in the “My Computer” menu. In my case, this is a mouse, a webcam and an external network card.

I think the issue of safely removing flash drives has been resolved. Three methods, I started using the last one with the program quite recently, and I really liked it.

Do not forget to safely remove flash drives, this is important for their normal operation.

In fact, I always remove the flash drive or external drive, through safe removal of devices, But standard program It infuriates me with its sluggishness... And this program will also prevent autorun from getting in...

Why do you need to safely remove devices?

In fact, the topic is quite popular, both among beginners and among professionals... There is a lot of controversy, but now I will tell you the theory and practice.

    1. What people say The flash drive may burn out, this is not entirely realistic, because the voltage supplied is small, but still I burned the flash drive when I pulled it out when booting the computer, but I guess it was a defect, it didn’t last that long... But now I always remove it safely, or wait until the computer turns off. It’s not up to me to decide what to do, my job is to advise... But haste does not lead to anything good, and the majority will agree with this.

    2. Now more about the real thing. Data may be lost. This is a fact, since before writing, the data is transferred to the cache and then to the flash drive. It’s one thing that something won’t be copied, or even by accident something might get damaged.

Here are two main reasons why you should remove external media.

All don't like safely remove devices just because it's long. I agree, the standard program infuriates me and that’s why we’ll get rid of this torment :)

    Safely Removing Devices

Left-click on the icon and select the device that needs to be removed. That's it, you have successfully mastered program for safely removing devices 🙂

Safely removing the device is typically used to USB eject flash drive or external hard drive in Windows 7, Windows XP and Windows 8. It may happen that the safe eject icon has disappeared from the panel Windows tasks- this may cause misunderstanding and lead to confusion, but there is nothing wrong with that. Now we will return this icon to its place.

Note: in Windows 8, for devices that are defined as a Media device, the safe eject icon is not shown (players, Android tablets, some phones).

Typically, in order to safely remove a device in Windows, you right-click on the corresponding icon near the clock and do it. The purpose of Safe Removal is that when you use it, you tell the operating system what you intend to extract this device(for example, a flash drive). In response to this, Windows terminates all operations that could lead to data corruption. In some cases, it also stops supplying power to the device.

Failure to safely remove hardware may result in data loss or damage to the drive. In practice, this does not happen often and there are certain things that you need to know and take into account to prevent this from happening, but I will write about this sometime.

How to get the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon back

Sometimes, according to unknown reasons, the safe removal icon may disappear. Even if you connect and disconnect the flash drive over and over again, for some reason the icon does not appear. If this happens to you (and this is most likely the case, otherwise you wouldn’t have come here), press the Win + R buttons on your keyboard and enter the following command in the “Run” window:

    RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

This command works on Windows 7, 8 and XP. The absence of a space after the comma is not an error, it should be so. After running this command, the Safely Remove Hardware dialog box that you were looking for will open.

In this window, you can, as usual, select the device that you want to disable and click the “Stop” button. A side effect of running this command is that the safe eject icon will reappear where it should be.

If it keeps disappearing and each time you need to re-execute the specified command to remove the device, then you can create a shortcut for this action: right-click on empty space desktop, select “Create” - “Shortcut” and in the “Object location” field, enter a command to open the Safely Remove Device dialog. At the second stage of creating a shortcut, you can give it any desired name.

Another way to safely remove your device in Windows

There is another simple method that allows you to safely remove your device when the Windows taskbar icon is missing:

I hope the methods listed here are safe to extract portable hard A disk or flash drive will be enough for you.
