• Copying an image in Photoshop. How to copy a selected area to a new layer in Photoshop

A selection in Photoshop is an area of an image outlined using some tool that creates a selection. You can perform various manipulations with the selected area: copying, transforming, moving and others. The selected area can be considered an independent object.

This tutorial will show you how to copy selected areas.

As mentioned above, the selected area is an independent object, so it can be copied in any available way.

    Let's get started.

The first method is the most famous and widespread. These are the keyboard shortcuts CTRL+C And CTRL+V.

Using this method, you can copy the selected area not only within one document, but also to another. A new layer is created automatically.

The second method is the easiest and fastest - keyboard shortcut CTRL+J. A new layer with a copy of the selected area is also created automatically. Works only within one document.

The third method is to copy the selected area within one layer. Here we need a tool "Move" and key ALT.

After selecting the area, you need to take the tool "Move", pinch ALT and drag the selection in the desired direction. Then ALT let's go.

If you press and hold while moving SHIFT, then the area will move only in the direction in which we started moving (horizontally or vertically).

The fourth method concerns copying an area to new document.

After highlighting, you must press CTRL+C, then CTRL+N, then CTRL+V.

What are we doing? The first step is to copy the selection to the clipboard. Secondly, we create a new document, and the document is automatically created with the size of the selection.

The third step is to paste into the document what was on the clipboard.

The fifth method copies the selected area to an already existing document. This is where the tool comes in handy again. "Move".

Create a selection, take the tool "Move" and drag the area to the tab of the document to which we want to copy this area.

Without releasing the mouse button, wait until the document opens, and, again without releasing the mouse button, move the cursor to the canvas.

These were five ways to copy a selection to new layer or other document. Use all these techniques, as you will have to act differently in different situations.

The article is about a small nuance that allows you to use the copy to new layer function. Not everyone knows about the mode in which this convenient command works in Photoshop. The lesson is intended for a beginner audience.

It often happens that it is necessary to transfer an already selected part of the image to transparent background new layer.

To do this, click once on the tool Wand. And then you will have access to the Layer via Copy function, which can be easily called by right-clicking the mouse. In the Russian version, this will mean copying to a new layer. Select this line, and your selected area will immediately appear on a new layer. That's all the wisdom.

Often, beginners find this simple operation difficult precisely because the Photoshop program performs this command not in all modes. It does not display a context menu in Pen, Lasso, Move, or other modes. She silently demands that the instrument, namely the Magic Wand, be displayed. And then context menu When you right-click the mouse, it immediately becomes bright and ready to go.

    • Often we need to copy this or that file and create the right number copies of it. In this article, we will try to analyze the most well-known and popular copying methods in Photoshop.

      Copy methods

      1. The most famous and common method of copying objects. Its disadvantages include large number the time it takes to complete. Holding down the button Ctrl, click on the layer thumbnail. A process is loaded that will highlight the outline of the object.

The next step is to click "Editing - Copy", then move to "Editing - Paste".

Using the tools "Move" (V), we place a copy of the file as we want to see it on the screen. We repeat these simple manipulations repeatedly until the required number of copies is recreated. As a result, we spent quite a lot of time.

If we plan to save a little time, then the copying process can be speeded up. Select “Editing”, for this we use the “hot” buttons on the keyboard Ctrl + C (copy) And Ctrl + V (paste).

      2. In the section "Layers" Move the layer down, where the new layer icon is located.

As a result, we have a copy of this layer. The next step is to use the toolkit "Move" (V), placing a copy of the object where we want it.

      3. With the layer selected, click a set of buttons Ctrl+J, we end up with a copy of this layer. Then, as in all the above cases, we type "Move" (V). This method is even faster than the previous ones.

      Another way

This is the most attractive of all methods for copying objects, and it takes the least amount of time. Pressing simultaneously Ctrl and Alt, click anywhere on the screen and move the copy to the desired space.

Everything is ready! The most convenient thing here is that you don’t need to carry out any actions to make the layer with the frame or tools active "Move" (V) We don't use it at all. Holding just Ctrl and Alt, by clicking on the screen, we already get a duplicate. We advise you to pay attention to this method!

Thus, we have studied ways to create copies of a file in Photoshop!

Once the required area of the image is selected, we can move it, copy it, duplicate it, or delete it.

Let's look at what actions can be performed on selected image fragments in Photoshop.
It should be noted that all actions with image fragments are performed in the active layer, i.e. directly in the layer where the image is located, provided that this layer is selected
Let's open an image File (file) -> Open (open).
      Consider the operation " Moving».
Let's select an arbitrary part of the image, for example, rectangular selection. Now let's place the selection tool inside the selected area and, by clicking the mouse button, begin moving. The selection began to move along with the pointer. However, the image did not change.
Now select the “move” tool and perform the same operation. The selected area began to move along with the image fragment.
Now let's deselect. The selected fragment is “pasted” into the image.

      Consider the operation " Copy».
Edit (edit) -> Copy (copy). In this case, the selected part of the image was copied to the clipboard.
Now in the main menu we select Edit (edit) -> Paste (insert). The copied part of the image appears in a new layer. The source of the image remains unchanged.

If, when copying a selected area, you select the command Edit(edit) -> Copy Merged (copy merge), then not only the selected image fragment from the active layer, but also from all visible layers will go to the clipboard.

      Consider the operation " Removal».
Let's select an arbitrary part of the image, for example, with a rectangular selection. In the main menu we select Edit (edit) -> Cut (cut).
The selected area of the image has disappeared. But by using the “cut” command, we do not destroy the selected fragment. He is the same as with the command Copy (copy), goes to the clipboard, from where we can retrieve it with the command Edit(edit) -> Paste (insert).

Now select a fragment of the image and select from the main menu Edit (edit) -> Clear (clear). The selected fragment has disappeared. Moreover, insert it with the command Edit (edit) -> Paste (insert) will no longer be possible.

      Consider the operation " Cloning».
Select an arbitrary part of the image. Now select the Move Tool and place it inside the selection. Next, press the key<Alt > and, without releasing it, we begin moving the pointer. We see that a copy of the selected image fragment is moved, while the original image does not change. Cloning (reproduction) of an image fragment inside the active layer occurs.
Let's release the mouse button. The selected fragment has been fixed inside the original image and has now become part of it.
We can continue cloning by dragging the selection, or finish by deselecting it.

That. We looked at how you can copy, delete and clone a selected portion of an image in Photoshop.
