    Photoshop knows several ways to shade an image. In this article, you will learn what shading is, where it is located, and we will look at an example of how to make shading in Photoshop.

    Feathering(Feather) is a smooth dissolution of the edges of the image. With it you can soften the edges and make smooth transition to the bottom layer.

    Working principle:

    A selected area is created, indicating the size of the feathering. Visible changes didn't appear. We just told Photoshop that we want a dissolve effect on both sides of the selection. Next, you need to remove that part of the image towards which the dissolution will occur. As a result, Photoshop will selectively remove some pixels and make some translucent. Below is an example to see what it looks like.

    First, let's figure out where the shading is and how to choose it.

    Why is this command needed if it would seem that the settings in the options bar are sufficient?

    The whole point is in the order of actions. When creating a selected area, you first need to think through everything: do you want to apply a feather to it, and what size it should be. If you don’t think about it, but come to your senses when the selected area has already been created, you will not be able to apply the desired settings to it through the options panel. Agree, this is not convenient: well, for example, you don’t know what sizes are needed and you want to look at the result by using different quantities pixels - for this you need to create a new selected area each time - and if this complex object, like hair blowing in the wind?

    It is for such cases that you need to use the command Selection - Modification - Feather. A dialog box will appear "Feather the selected area", in which you enter a value and immediately see the result, changing it in one direction or another as desired.

    I also want to note that menu commands, unlike settings in the options panel, you can specify hotkey combinations For quick access. Here in in this case, already by default, you will see that the command is available using the key combination Shift+F6 (by the way, all standard key sets can be changed at your discretion - ).

    Let's now see how shading is used in practice. Let's try to make the edges of the image dissolve.

    Step 2

    If you can see a lock icon on the layers palette next to the thumbnail, it means . To unlock, double-click on the layer. In the dialog box that appears, “ New Layer", without changing anything, click on OK.

    Let's create a selected area around the perimeter of the image. To do this, take it and, making an indent from the edge a little less than a centimeter, create a selection frame.

    If there is no image space to the right or left of the selection, the Feather command will become unavailable.

    Step 4

    Select a team Selection - Modification - Feather and in the dialog box that appears, specify the value in pixels of what size the edges of the image should be dissolved. I took 20 pixels.

    After this, the corners of the selection should become rounded.

    Now attention. Think about it. What did you highlight? That's right - essentially we framed the center of the image. Since next step we must remove extra pixels, then currently the removal will occur in the center. But we need the opposite. Apply Ctrl+Shift+I It creates a reverse selection.

    Now under the frame we have the edges of the image. Look how the “marching ants” have changed:

    Now let's remove the edges of the image. To do this, press the Delete key.

    The removal effect is cumulative - if press delete several times, then Photoshop will capture more and more pixels.

    In my example, I clicked delete three times.

    To remove the selection frame, press Ctrl+D.

    Feathering hard edges

    Feathering is also useful to smooth out the effect of sharp edges in an image. This is especially true when working on a collage.

    By adding new objects to the collage, the effect of an unnatural transition of the boundaries of one object to another is very noticeable. As an example, let's look at creating a mini-collage.

    There are several ways to feather the edge of a photo. And the results of the work vary somewhat. Let's explore both.

    First, let's prepare a photo. To do this you should create a workspace white. And then drag the photo you like there. Something like this:

    Select the area close to the border of the photo.


    Click on the selected area with the right mouse button. Select “shading” from the drop-down list.


    Set the feathering radius. This is not necessarily the meaning. You can choose any other at your discretion.

    The edges of the image, as you can see, have blurred. For a more pronounced effect, you can repeat it.

    We combine the layers and save.

    I'll show you another way to blur the edges of a photo, which is more interesting in my opinion. To do this, use the Gaussian Blur tool.

    In my opinion, this effect is more interesting than the previous one due to the uneven blurring of the border.

    Let's return to the original image. Repeat the selection. Let's invert.

    Now we are looking for the “Gaussian blur” operation.



    As you can see, this time we have a clear blur border.


    The larger the blur radius you set, the sharper the border is drawn.

    And a very simple way is the third one. But it is “for the little ones.” The easiest to understand and the most time consuming. It will not be possible to perform these steps carefully the first time.


    Select “blur” from the toolbar. Right-click on the work area and select the blur radius.

    Then, while holding shift, move the cursor along the edge of the photo.

    By combinations of commands you can achieve very beautiful effects. You should not rely on one method; there are situations where you will have to use all three. Let's say when creating a colorful collage for a banner. Therefore, I strongly advise you to remember all three.

    In our age of technology, when every person has access to various equipment, all kinds of devices, taking a photograph is not a problem at all. This can be either a quick photo, without focusing on quality, or professional shooting, when every centimeter of the photo is studied and, if necessary, corrected.     5. Open the “Selection” section, line “Modification” – “Feather”. After this, a new window will appear in front of you with one single parameter - selecting the blur radius. However, you cannot know the exact number of pixels, so here you need to use a trial method. Try starting with a value of 50 pixels and see what happens.

    Method two

    There is another way to create blurred edges in Photoshop, for many it is preferable and more convenient than the first. In this case, the “Quick Mask” tool is used, which can be found almost at the very bottom of the vertical panel of the program, on the left side.     After that, open the “Filter” section in the toolbar and select the “Blur” line there – . A window will open in which, using the slider, you can adjust the degree of blurring of the edges.     On the left small vertical panel in Photoshop, right-click on the tool called “Selection”, and then select "Oval area". Using it, we determine the area in the picture that does NOT need to be blurred, for example, the face.


    Then open “Selection”, select “Modify” and “Feather”.

    A small new window should appear with one single, but necessary, parameter - in fact, the choice of the radius of our future blur. Here we try again and again and see what comes out. To start, let's say select 50 pixels. The required result is selected using the trial method.

    Then we invert the selection using the key combination CTRL+SHIFT+I and press the DEL key to delete the excess. In order to see the result, you need to remove visibility from the layer with the original image.

    Method number two

    There is another option for blurring edges in Photoshop, and it is used much more often. Here we will work with convenient tool called “Quick Mask” - it’s easy to find almost at the very bottom of the program’s vertical panel on the left. You can, by the way, just press Q.



    Then open the “Filter” on the toolbar, select the “Blur” line there, and then "Gaussian Blur".

    The program opens a window in which we can easily and simply adjust the degree of blur. Actually, here the advantage is noticeable to the naked eye: you are working here not on some whim, going through options, but clearly and clearly defining the radius. Then just click "OK".

    To see what we ended up with, we exit the quick mask mode (by pressing the same button, or Q), then press CTRL+SHIFT+I on the keyboard at the same time, and simply delete the selected area with the DEL button. The final step is to remove the unnecessary selection line by pressing CTRL+D.

    As you can see, both options are very simple, but with their help you can easily blur the edges of an image in Photoshop.

    Advice: In fact, you don't have to make two selections with Alt held down. You can make one selection only in the place where the blur will go. And after that you need to invert the selection. To do this, press the key combination SHIFT+CTRL+I or select the menu “Selection” - “Inversion”. Then you will automatically have a selected frame.

    In order for us to have a smooth transition, we need to complete the first two points from the previous method, but then the course will change a little.


    Please note ! The size of the Gaussian blur and feather radius depends on the size of the image itself. Here I was focusing on this particular size. Experiment.

    Other Blur Methods

    You don't have to use a Gaussian filter, there are many other blur filters. Let me show you another example, and then you can try it yourself.
