To do this, just read on one drive and then insert the disk into the second. In this case, only sectors unread on the previous drive will be read, which will ultimately make it possible to recover more unreadable blocks.

    Another good thing is that File Salvage does not require installation. To start working with the program, you should simply extract it from the archive.

    One caveat: all recovered files will be copied to the folder in which the executable file utility, so before extracting it from the archive, it is advisable to create a separate directory with a good supply of disk space.

    Advanced Recovery Mode

    The method described above is suitable in principle for everyone, however, if you want everything to be under control, then you can enable the advanced “Advanced” mode:

    Here we see the already familiar to a simple user window with several additional settings. At the top there is a file selection field, which works on the same principle as in normal mode. But all possible installations are concentrated under it.

    In the “Direction” section you can set the direction of reading information from the disk (direct or reverse). “Block Size” allows you to adjust the size of blocks for reading (the smaller, the more accurate, but longer).

    By default, File Salvage begins to automatically read information per megabyte, however, if the file has not been copied completely, it switches to 512 KB blocks and rescans the file, each time decreasing the block size until the entire file is copied.

    Naturally, each repeated scan lengthens the saving procedure, so if the disk is severely damaged, it sometimes makes sense to set a smaller block size for scanning in advance.

    I also advise you to pay attention to the “Skip small regions” item. Activating this item means that all unreadable blocks smaller than 512 bytes will be skipped. When playing a movie, the absence of such a fragment will be almost unnoticeable, but it will take much less time to “save” it in this mode!

    Unlike the simplified mode, here we can observe all the actions of File Salvage. In addition to the progress bar, we can monitor in graphical mode the number of recognized blocks (displayed green), and also see in the form of a list on the right which specific bytes have already been copied.

    Upon completion of saving, except the desired file You will find another file with the .BAD extension in the same directory:

    By opening it in Notepad, you can find a report about the “bad” sectors of the copied file. The “+” sign indicates recognized bytes, and the “-” sign, respectively, indicates those bytes skipped during copying. By adding together all the “cons” we can get the total amount of losses.     Conclusions

    File Salvage does not provide the fastest, but quite effective algorithm for reading damaged disks.

    This program can be safely used to recover any data, however, if you want to “bring back to life” your favorite song or any other audio file, it is possible that the resulting file will sometimes have pauses and all sorts of interruptions during playback.

    This is because File Salvage replaces the missing fragment with zero bytes to maintain the integrity of the file being saved. The program proves to be the most ideal tool when copying films, since skipping small fragments has virtually no effect on the overall quality of playback.

    The computer reads the disk not as a stream of information, but absolutely down to every byte. And the loss of any byte is critical for it and is considered an error. Which of course is true for programs and databases. But for images and sound this is not always possible. After all, even if there is no sound in the film for a couple of seconds, you most likely will not notice anything. And if you notice, it is unlikely to spoil the overall viewing experience.

    Mechanical and software method of data recovery

    The mechanical method involves influencing the media itself, that is, the CD. As a rule, this is grinding the surface to hide scratches and restore the correct angle of laser reflection. I myself witnessed how a “stuttering” disk, after washing in warm water, began to work like new. I will not dwell on this method in detail, since I have never resorted to it, and I have nothing to recommend. The Non-Stop Copy utility was tested by me personally on Lenovo laptop from the operating room Windows system 7 Ultimate x32 and showed excellent results.

I noticed only one drawback in the interface functionality: you can only copy one file at a time. The functionality is not entirely clear from their name. The “Stop” button completely stops the copying process, while all data about the state of the process at the time the copying is stopped is saved. Final file after stopping it has the same size as source file. It contains everything that was copied, and parts of the file that were not copied or that could not be copied are replaced with zero bytes.
    The “Cancel” button completely cancels the copying process, and everything that was copied is deleted. In general, this button is provided in case you need to quickly stop the process and at the same time you are no longer interested in its result. For example, pressing the “Stop” button at the very beginning of copying is quite large file may lead to some delay in stopping due to “overwriting” the uncopied part of the file with zero bytes. The “Cancel” button in this case will stop the process immediately.
    That is, if you are tired of waiting, but you need the data, then click “Stop”, and if you don’t need it, then “Cancel”. And the best part is, if you clicked “Stop”, you can subsequently continue copying from the same place.

    Many people prefer to save important information (photos, work files and other documents) on DVDs. As such, they do not have an expiration date, but, nevertheless, due to any mechanical damage they fail. The reasons may be the most banal:

    formation of scratches;physical wear and tear;poor quality of the material from which the disc was made.

    Reading and copying information in such cases turns out to be impossible, however, there are methods and programs that will help cope with this problem.

    There are two main types possible problems: logical malfunctions and damage to the surface, as a result of which the damaged DVD completely stops working; if the damage is really extensive, then it is quite difficult to do anything.

    Logic faults

    This method is implemented with the support of specific software not only manually, but also in automated mode.

    When using the software, the entire information layer contained on the media is first scanned. Based on the scanning results, based on the detected service information, a so-called “map” of information location is formed. The “map” provides information about which cluster belongs to which file or directory, dimensions, names and all other characteristics of the elements of the scanned file system.

    After which the information is restored - the selected data is transferred to another medium. When restoring information, recording to the original media is not carried out.

    Surface restoration

    Before using any software, preferably:

    restore the damaged surface as much as possible;

    After polishing to neutralize scratches on standard or specific equipment, a full copy is made.

    Then, depending on the state of the final copy and the method of obtaining it (for example, preliminary decoding may be necessary), the entire necessary information directly.

    Special programs

    The utilities available today, using special mechanisms for reading information, are ultimately able to either read files or copy them (although they cannot guarantee absolute recovery of each of them). These programs have the ability to read information from disks of any format, using direct access and bypassing standard, ineffective means that are characteristic of the Windows system.

    They make many attempts to read the “damaged” disk segment, and at the same time are able to continue reading or copying data after errors appear during the reading process. This quite often makes it possible to “pull out” information in its primary form. If this method does not work, then the vast majority of the presented utilities are simply capable of replacing “non-working” areas with zeros.
