• Photoshop tutorials. Bright glow in Photoshop. How to Give Your Photos a Glow

Welcome to another mini-tutorial on Photoshop in a series of lessons that we have specifically dedicated to beginners - to help them understand the various aspects of using Photoshop using small, but without losing any quality, examples.

In this tutorial we'll show you how to create a beautiful glowing floral design in just a few steps. The result will be quite impressive, but the process of creating it is quite simple, what else does a beginner need?

To work you will need the following files:

  • Floral Brushset (choose something from the list)
    • Well, let's go!

      1 Step

Create new document dimensions 600?600px and immediately fill the background with black color #000000 . Create new layer called “Cloud” with about 40% Opacity and draw some cloud using one of the brushes you downloaded.

Create another layer called “background light”, switch to a large soft brush white and create light spots as shown in the image below.

As you can see, in this way you can create a good background for further work in a matter of seconds.

      2 Step

Create a new layer called “floral pattern”. Using the floral brush you downloaded at the beginning of the tutorial, paint one design onto this layer.

Now apply the following styles to this layer (item Blending Options from context menu, which appears when you right-click on a layer):

      Bevel and Emboss

As you can see, here we've created some highlights and some shadow for our pattern:

      3 Step

Now you can add a glow effect to the pattern. To do this, simply duplicate the original flower layer and apply a blur to it by going to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur:

And this is what you get when glowing edges form behind the pattern:

      4 Step

Let's add some color to the image. The Color Balance Adjustment Layer will help us with this. Personally, I think this is the most easy way add color to a picture without using the Brush and Color Picker tools.

I chose a mixture of gold shades (set everything as indicated below):

      Well, here is our result:

Please note that there is actually no need to use the same colors as I did, and you can experiment with shades based on your tastes and preferences.

      5 Step

Now let’s merge all the layers (Image > Flatten Image), not forgetting to first save a copy of the original document with layers in separate file. Duplicate the background layer and apply the following filter to it: Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen.

As you can see, we have a darker edge of the pattern, and the overall image is sharper and more detailed.

Now let's create the bokeh effect. This can be done using the Brush Dynamics settings (F5).

Create a new layer called “bokeh” on top of the other layers. Switch to a round brush with about 90% Hardness value and apply the following settings for this brush:

      Transfer (Other Dynamics)

Also check the Airbrush and Smoothing options

Well, this is what we get at the output:

      6 Step

Duplicate the bokeh layer and apply Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen to the duplicate:

Reduce the Opacity of the take to around 80% and see how a highlighted edge appears around the bokeh:

Note: I personally prefer to use the Smart Sharpen filter to add stroke rather than working with the Stroke style as many people do. The result is a better and more detailed effect - in my opinion.

In this Photoshop tutorial we will learn about merging techniques. complex objects into a single composition, creating interesting effects lighting and stylization of the finished work.

In this lesson, we'll learn techniques for combining complex objects into a single composition, creating interesting lighting effects, and stylizing the finished work.
All this will be done using the capabilities of Photoshop.
ATTENTION: This lesson is intended for advanced Photoshop users.

      Final result

      Let's start the Photoshop lesson

      Materials used in the lesson:

      1. Open the grunge texture as a background for future work ( File > Open(File > Open / Keyboard shortcut "Ctrl+O"). Duplicate the layer with it → Layer > Duplicate Layer(Layer > Duplicate Layer / Keyboard shortcut "Ctrl+J") (generally this good habit duplicate layers because it gives you more editing options in case of an error), set the duplicate blending mode to Darken(Darkening) and we get the following picture: ↓

Duplicate the background again ( Layer > Duplicate Layer(Layer > Duplicate Layer / Keyboard shortcut "Ctrl+J")), raise this duplicate on top of all layers, add a vector layer mask to it and use a soft black brush to make something like this. ↓

Change the blending mode of this layer to Overlay(Overlap).

Adjust the image using → Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves(Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves) with the following settings: ↓

And we get this effect. ↓

      2. The background is ready, now we can add our architectural objects. Open all the photos in the program and start cutting them out. Each author has his own cutting method ( Pen Tool(Pen Tool/P Key) Magic Wand Tool(Tool " Wand" / "W" key), Lasso Tool(Lasso Tool / "L" Key)), the author of this tutorial usually uses Pen Tool(Pen Tool / "P" Key) mode Path(Outlines). If you also use it, then after you close the selection around the object, click on the right mouse button and select “ Make selection…” (Create a selected area) and set the radius there 0px. Then click ctrl+alt+R and in the window set the following parameters: ↓

Your object selection should now look like this: ↓

      3. Drag the object onto our background, click Ctrl+T and transform to the right size, place it in the center.

Let's call this layer “ Temple 1"(Temple 1), create on top of it 2 new adjustment layers with parameters as in the pictures below and add to each of them Layer > Create clipping mask(Layer > Create Clipping Mask / Keyboard shortcut "Ctrl+G") to layer “ Temple 1".

      Layer Curves(Curves). ↓

Layer Black and white(Black and white balance) ↓

Then put on the layer “ Temple 1" blend mode Multiply(Multiplication) and look at the result. ↓

      4. Open the second object. Cut it out as described above (along with the falling shadow) and drag it into our document.

We transform it as necessary and place it behind the first object as follows: ↓

Name the layer “ Temple 2", add a vector layer mask to it and remove the part of the temple that goes behind the first object.

On top of the layer Temple 2"we are creating again 2 the same adjustment layers with the following parameters and also add on each of them Clipping Mask(Clipping Mask) to layer “ Temple 2": ↓

      Layer Curves(Curves).

Layer Black and white(Black and white balance).

Layer blend mode “ Temple 2"we also change to “ Multiply" (Multiplication).

      5. Open the photo of the third temple, cut it out, drag it into the document, transform and rotate it, place it as shown below.

Name the layer “ Temple 3"and using a mask (see above) we remove the part of the temple that goes behind the first temple.

Similar to the previous steps, add on top 2 adjustment layer with Clipping Mask(Clipping Mask) to layer “ Temple 3" and change the layer blending mode.

      Layer Curves(Curves).

Layer Black and white(Black and white balance).

      Let's see the result: ↓

      6. Three temples are collected in the composition in the middle of the work, now you can add clouds around them. Open the photo of the clouds and drag it onto the layer under “ Temple 1"and place it as shown in the picture. ↓

Let's call this layer “ cloud” and add a vector mask to it. On it we draw something like the following: ↓

      And look at the result.

Again add on top of the layer “ cloud2 adjustment layer with Clipping Mask(Clipping Mask) to this layer on each of them.

      Layer Curves(Curves).

Layer Black and white(Black and white balance).

And we also change the mode of the layer with clouds to “ Multiply" (Multiplication).

      7. Create a new layer and name it “ Radial Blur” (Radial Blur), fill the layer with black and go to menu → Filter > Render > Clouds(Filter > Render > Clouds) (foreground color is white, background color is black).

Now apply to this layer → Filter > Blur > Radial Blur(Filter > Blur > Radial Blur).

Change the layer blend mode to “ overlay” (Overlap).

Duplicate the layer “ cloud” and set the layer blending mode to “ soft light” (Soft light) and look at the result: ↓

Duplicate the layer “ cloud” once again, add a vector mask to this duplicate and draw something like this on it: ↓

      Add colorful glow in Photoshop

In this tutorial I'll show you how to create an interesting glow and add mood to an image. For this we will use blending modes(blending options), selection tools and a little of your imagination.

      Before processing.

      After.

Let's get started. Open the image to which you want to apply the effect. The author chose this.

Step 1. You need to separate the girl from the background. Do it with
using the method that works best for you. Author
      used the tool Feather
(Pen Tool), drawing a path around the girl’s figure, you need to close the outline,
create a selected area. Set the feathering to 1 px.

Step 2. Copy the selection (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) it to a new layer, name the layer "Young woman».

Step 3. Duplicate the layer "Young woman". Apply an adjustment to a copy of this layer Brightness/Contrast in the menu Image - Correction(Image > Adjustments > Brightness and Contrast).

Step 4. Select the layer "Young woman". Let's go to the menu Filter - Blur - Motion Blur(Filter > Blur > Motion Blur). We set these settings Corner(Angle) - 40 degrees, Bias(Distance) - 120. Merge layers "Young woman" and a copy of it.

Step 5. with a girl and call him "Smoke". Using the tool Lasso(Lasso Tool), draw an area around the girl. Set the feathering to 150 px.

Step 6. Make sure your Foreground color is white and your Background color is black. Now let's go to the menu Filter - Rendering - Clouds(Filter > Render > Clouds). After that, set the blending mode for this layer Overlap(Overlay).

Step 7 Create a new layer below the layer "Smoke" and name it "Gradient". Select Tool Gradient(Gradient Tool) and click to bring up the Gradient Editor. Set the foreground color #c6229e and background color #1dbdda. In the tool settings, set Linear. Swipe gradient from left top corner to the bottom right, set the opacity of this layer to 60%.

Step 8 Set the layer "Gradient" blending mode Overlap(Overlay), then merge the layers " Smoke" And "Gradient".
You should get something like the screenshot below. Can
experiment with different gradient color combinations and others
blending modes for the “Gradient” layer.

Step 9 Create a new layer below the layer "Gradient" and name it "Glow". Using white soft Brush(Brush), paint over the edges of the girl with a brush. This will create a glowing effect behind the girl.

Step 10 Make the tool active Brush(Brush
tool), go to the brush settings palette (F5) and enter the following
settings as shown in the screenshots below. Save this brush
pressing Save new brush(Create New Brush) and name her "Splash".
Then you can select it again in the brushes palette and use it later.
Drag the customized brush over the image as in the image below.
      Achieve the desired effect.

Step 11 Create a new layer, name it "Stripes". The name speaks for itself. We're going to make glow stripes. To make them, select a tool Polygon Lasso
(Polygonal Lasso Tool) and create a triangle. Then using white
Using a soft brush, paint on the opposite side of the base of the triangle. You
You can also experiment with different shapes and sizes to
      create the effects you want.

Step 12 Now let's do the lighting on the girl herself. To do this, create a new layer above the layer "Young woman" and set its blending mode to Lightening the base
(Color Dodge). Load the girl outline you made earlier in
contours palette or use a combination Ctrl keys+ click on
thumbnail of the layer with the girl. The selection will load. Using the tool PIpetka(Eyedropper
Tool), select the color of the glow around the girl that we made
earlier and with the same color, with a soft brush, draw along the inner
      outline of the selected area.

Step 13 Now we will create the light lines. Create a new layer called "Lines" above the girl layer. Set the color foreground(foreground color) white, select tool Brush(Brush Tool) and open the brush settings window. Select a soft brush, approximately 9 px. In the tab Dynamics of shape(Shape Dynamics) install Size fluctuation(size jitter control) on pen pressure(Pen Pressure). This will give your brush strokes an interesting effect.

Step 14 Using the tool Feather(Pen tool), create several lines (see screenshot). After that, right-click and select the option - Stroke the outline(Stroke Path). The settings window will open. It is necessary to put Brush(Brush) and check the box Simulate pressure(Simulate Pressure). Click OK. After this, your lines made with a pen will be outlined with a brush.

Step 15 Now double click on the lines layer to bring up Layer Styles(Blending Options). Applicable Outer glow(Outer Glow). Use the settings as in the screenshot below.

Step 16 Using a layer mask, if desired, you can
remove some parts of the lines that fall on the girl. And also
you can add more elements to the image to make it
      look even more unique.

      Here's the final image.

While studying this lesson, I made this picture.

Step 1. Let's start by creating a nice background. Create a new Photoshop file ( Ctrl+N) and paint it black. Now, create a new layer ( Ctrl+Shift+N) and fill it with white. Let's go Filters>Render>Lighting Effects and set the parameters as in the figure below. The color can be any dark, we chose dark pink/purple (the second color is black).

Step 2. It's time to create a bright ball of light, the basis for the future glow. Let's start by creating a new layer ( Ctrl+Shift+N) and settings for it Mix Mode ( Blending Mode) - Screen. Then using Tool Oval area(Elliptical Marquee Tool (M)), draw a circular selection and shade it ( Select>Modify>Feather (Selection>Modification>Feather (Alt+Ctrl+D))) with a feather radius of about 20 pixels, this is to create a soft halo when filling the circle in the future. Fill our selection with Radial Gradient Fill tool with the following parameters:

Step 3. Make a copy of the layer with the ball and work further with it, and hide the original. We draw flashes around the future glow. Let's go Edit>Transform>Scale (Edit>Transformation>Scaling) and make a strip out of the ball (see picture).

Step 4. Let's move on to the most interesting part. We apply two filters to our light strip Wave (Filter>Distort>Wave (Filter>Distort>Wave)) And Twirl (Filter>Distort>Twirl). You can set any filter parameters, or you can use ours. Filters can be used several times.

All that remains is to make the layer with the main ball visible and that’s it, our stunning light effect is ready!!!

In this tutorial I'll show you how to create a raised glow effect using styles, brushes, blending modes and curves. You will also learn some useful techniques.

§1. First, I created a new 600x600px document and filled it with a Radial Gradient from light brown (#922f00) to black (#000000).

§2. We need to select the center of the circle, for this we copy the layer with the created circle and change the blending mode to “Color Dodge”.

§3. Now we need to add a glowing effect, for this we will use a layer with a suitable background. Let's create a new layer and apply the filter Filter > Render > Clouds on it.

§4. Change the blending mode of this layer to “Overlay” and reduce the Opacity to 30%. It looks like we have achieved the intended effect, but we need to add a little more “haze”. To do this, apply the Filter > Sketch > Chrome filter with default properties, of course you can play with the properties, but the default properties are quite suitable for us. You can see the result in the following screenshot.

§5. To make some glowing lines we will use the Pen tool. It will be better if you do not overuse the anchor points, this will help achieve smooth lines. We can achieve a suitable curve by changing its angles with the mouse. In the screenshot below, the stylized letter S rests on just three dots. Two points at the beginning and end, and one point in the middle to give the curve a curve.

§6. Once you have achieved a suitable curve, create a new layer. Then click on the paintbrush tool (, and change the brush to a 3 px brush without smoothing the edges.

§7. Now go back to pen tool(P), and right-click on the curve and select the “Stroke Path” property. A dialog box will appear in front of you in which you need to change the tool to a brush (Tool: Brush), and make sure that you have the “Simulate Pressure” property checked. This is very important because it is this property that creates the taper at the edges of the drawn line. Now right-click on the curve again and delete it (Delete path).

§8. You should get a similar narrow curve.

§9. Now we need to add a glow to the curve. The easiest way is to change the layer properties ( layer style). First, we use the Outer Glow property with standard parameters. Another way we used to add glow is the property Drop Shadow. In addition, I used the Color Overlay property to highlight the center of the resulting glow with white color.

§10. Now you have one glowing line, but it will be great if we create several more lines using a similar method. The beauty of layer style is that in order to use the same properties on several layers, we just need to copy the style of the original layer to a new one. To do this, right-click on the layer with the style, select “Copy Layer Style”, then right-click on the new layer and assign the copied style to it by selecting “Paste layer style”.

§11. Now, using the methods described above, create some more curved lines. In the example, I made one line thicker than the others, using a larger diameter brush, and added one line as if connecting two shapes.

§12. Now let's add text with the same layer style as in the examples with lines. It will be very important to pay attention to the design of the text. You will need to choose the appropriate font, size, and distance between letters. Here I have styled three words by reducing the size and increasing the spacing between the letters in the words "ADVANCED and FX".

§13. Now, perhaps, let's add particles to the drawing. To do this, we will use a brush with a diameter of 3 pixels without smoothing the edges. Create a new layer and draw dots on it. The glow effect will be more visible if you use more dots in the center and make them bolder by double-clicking.

§14. Now we can colorize the resulting glow. To do this, create a new layer, filling it with a radial gradient from blue to transparent.

§15. Then change the blending mode of the new layer to “Color” and reduce the opacity to 50%. Now you can see how part of the glow has turned bluish. Let's add a few more multi-colored layers with similar properties to get a multi-colored glow.

§16. And now you got the result you were waiting for: a colored glow covered with haze. Remember this lesson, you can apply similar techniques anywhere, you can experiment with properties to get something truly excellent! Good luck!
