Local dimming technology has the only drawback - the effect of local dimming, which is formed when part of the light from brighter zones leaks into neighboring darker ones, which subsequently brightens the border dark color. It is quite difficult to notice the clouding effect on most models, since the disadvantage is directly related to the number of local dimming zones behind the screen, and manufacturers do not always provide such information.

    When using standard backlighting using CCFL lamps and in most LCD TVs with edge LED backlighting, all backlight sources brighten or dim at the same time (the so-called " global dimming"), but among TV models from Samsung and LG there are rarely displays with side LED backlighting, which can also work on the principle of local dimming (“precision dimming” for Samsung and “LED Plus” for LG). To put it simply, this is a local dimming sham.

    Thin models with side LED backlight Of course, they suffer from uneven screen illumination, but not everyone.     We must not forget about the energy efficiency of LED backlighting. Of course, the consumption of any model is significantly affected by the size of the screen and the brightness of the backlight sources. LCD TV models of both types of LED backlighting are much more energy efficient compared to plasma models.

    LED backlights for LCD displays are divided into categories according to the following criteria:

    • glow color: white or RGB;
    • lighting uniformity: static or dynamic;
    • design: matrix or side (this is described in more detail above)

    RGB backlighting is used to fine-tune the light spectrum. In addition, additional compensation for changes in the emission spectrum of LEDs over time is often applied.     LED— Modern versions of LCD TVs, the display of which is backlit with bright light-emitting diodes (LED), unlike earlier models backlit with fluorescent lamps. It is for this reason that modern TV models may be marked LED.
    Visually, LED TVs differ from conventional LCD TVs in their thin and light body.
    Currently, two options for such illumination are practiced:

    Plasma TVs are similar in appearance to LCDs, but have a completely different principle of image formation on the display matrix.
    Unlike liquid crystal pixels, which are not a light source, but only break the light flux, plasma panel pixels are microscopic gas-discharge light bulbs. The principle of plasma discharge under the influence of electric current is used. The advantages of plasma in comparison with LCD can be considered higher contrast, unlimited viewing angle and lack of dynamic distortion.
    Disadvantages include high power consumption and limited pixel life.
    Plasma TVs are more complex and expensive to repair, which can have a significant impact during the post-warranty period.
    Externally, plasma displays can usually be distinguished from LCDs if you take a closer look at the surface of the screen. In most cases, plasma is hard glass, on the inside of which pixels with a phosphor are visible, like in CRT televisions. And the LCD screen is always tinted, usually with an anti-reflective coating, usually on the outside.

    OLED TVs - developed and manufactured by LG.

    Technical feature - no liquid crystals or backlight. LEDs (OLED - Organic Light Emitting Diode) in triads ( three colors) are applied to the surface of the glass, and their brightness is controlled by pulses electric current, switched horizontally and vertically.
    The principle of image formation is similar to plasma panels, only instead of gas-discharge plasma pixels, organic LEDs are used, which gives a significant advantage in power consumption and switching. In essence, this is a breakthrough in TV technology.
    The advantages are undeniable - unlimited viewing angle, high brightness with minimal consumption, perfect black color, maximum (unlimited) contrast.
    This contrast is due to the absence of any backlight and residual pixel glow. Then, for any brightness indicator, we obtain its ratio max/min to total zero- infinity.
    The disadvantages, in addition to the high price, will be revealed by practice of use as they are put into operation en masse.

    The manufacturer claims fairly high brightness and contrast characteristics that are competitive with OLED.
    In reality, comparative analysis data is not published anywhere, and it is only possible to evaluate the quality of these fundamentally different technologies subjectively—by eye.

    TV specifications

    Basic technical parameters TVs that determine image quality and may be important to the user - screen diagonal, screen resolution, brightness, contrast, response time, viewing angle.     It is generally accepted that with a response of 2-4 ms, delays in the image become almost invisible to the eye and response times of this level are often not indicated at all in the main characteristics of the TV.

    Viewing angle TV can be significantly limited by the device of liquid crystals in the display matrix.
    This drawback is especially noticeable on inexpensive small-diagonal LCD TVs. You can see how the image quality deteriorates if you look at the screen from above or below (vertical viewing angle).
    When viewed from the sides (horizontal viewing angle), distortion is less noticeable.
