    Hello. Today I decided to write an article that will be of interest to everyone who has their own Wi-Fi router installed. For some reason I’m sure that even if you protected your Wi-Fi network with a password, you still had a question: how to see who is connected to my Wi-Fi router. And if so, then you have come to the right place :) Now I’ll write as quickly as possible to see which of those sneaky neighbors hacked your Wi-Fi network and is secretly using your Internet :)

    How to find out who is connected to a Wi-Fi network?

    All we need is to simply go to the router settings, go to the appropriate tab and identify the “criminal” who is stealing the Internet :)

    So the most important thing is to get into the router settings. Enter in address bar browser 192.168.1.1 (this address works for me), you can try again 192.168.0.1 . In any case, on the pieces of paper that came with the router it is written how to enter the settings (or look at the bottom of the router).

    We get to the router management page. Now we need to find a page where we can see who is connected to our Wi-Fi router. I have a TP-Link TL-WR841N on my router, and I think for all TP-Link, go to the “Wireless” tab and select “Wireless Statistics”. We look in the table at how many devices are connected to yours Wi-Fi networks. As you can see, I have two devices, no, these are not neighbors 🙂, this is my phone and a tablet. As you have already noticed, it displays MAC address device, encryption type and number of packets transmitted.

    On another tab you can see who is connected to the network, not only via Wi-Fi, but also via cable.

    Go to the “DHCP” tab, then “DHCP Clients List”. As you can see, I already have three devices here, and I also added my computer, which is connected via a network cable. This page displays not only the MAC address, but also the name of the device and the IP that was assigned to the device. Clicking the “Refresh” button updates the statistics.

    For popular routers D-LINK, look for the “Active session” tab, on it and see who is connected to the router.

    First you need to get into the settings of the router itself. For these purposes, enter the standard set of numbers of the IP address () in the browser. If the system starts to “quarrel”, then change the address to 192.168.1.1.

    You will see a typical dialog box in which you need to enter your login and password.

    The windows may differ from each other, but their essence is the same. Login – admin, password – admin.

    Go to the main router settings menu.

    You need to immediately switch from basic settings to advanced settings, otherwise you won’t see anything. For these purposes, there is a corresponding menu at the bottom right.

    We are interested in the “status” item and the double arrow to the right of the name. Click on it until you come across the “client” link. That's what we need.

    Here you can see a complete list of all devices and gadgets that consume traffic via Wi-Fi. Count how many of them belong to you.

    In particular, the following can work from the router:

    If the number of subscribers significantly exceeds the number of “allowed” devices, it means that someone has illegally “sucked in” to your source.

    There are 2 options to solve the problem:

    1. Setting a password;
    2. Changing it to a more complex one.

    Important! Password your access point if you haven't already done so. Firstly, you will benefit in data transfer speed, because traffic will not be scattered over outside users, and secondly, protect yourself in the future.

    How to see who is connected to your wifi TP-link?

    Perhaps the most famous company supplying network equipment. Setting it up and also viewing the list of connected devices is not difficult.

    So, how can I see who is connected to my wifi tp-link? At first, you will be required to enter the same standard IP, i.e. 192.168.1.1.

    Pay attention! If you have not previously changed either your login or password, then enter “admin” in both columns.

    In order not to tinker with all the settings and search for parameters at random, switch to the “Wireless” tab. Next, click on the “Wireless statistics” sub-item.

    Here is a list of all devices that are currently connected to your Internet network via Wi-Fi (in in this case- 2). You can see 3 columns:

    1. MAC address;
    2. Encryption type (same for all);
    3. Number of transmitted packets.

    The choice of options is, of course, meager, but this is all the available statistics.

    Besides Wi-Fi connections You can also look at those who are powered from your router “the old fashioned way”, i.e. via cable. To do this, open the “DHCP” - “DHCP Client List” tab.

    There are also 3 data columns available here:

    1. PC name;
    2. MAC address;
    3. IP address.

    Thus, you can “detect by IP” someone who has not quite legally connected to your network and is blatantly stealing traffic.

    And just in case, change your router access password or enable this function if you have not done so before.

    After all, it is thanks to Wi-Fi that you and I can access the Internet, with various devices, be it a laptop, tablet computer or a simple smartphone that can support Wi-Fi access.

    As you already understand, today this will not surprise anyone, since we can access the Internet from, say, the same smartphone without wires, just having access to a free access point.     Now imagine that this very access point is your Wi-Fi router. While in your apartment, you can freely access the Internet, both from your phone and from your computer. The question arises, and how to find out who is connected to mineWiFi. Who else besides me accesses the Internet through my Wi-Fi router? Have you ever asked yourself this question? What if one of your neighbors uses your Internet? So let's look at how to find out who is connected to my WiFi router.

    How to find out who is connected to my WiFi

    It's actually simple. You just need to enter the settings panel of your router and look at the necessary information in the appropriate tab. I will show you the example of my TP-Link router.

    So, first, we need to enter the settings panel of the Wi-Fi router; to do this, enter 192.168.0.1 in the address bar of the browser (depending on your router model, the address may be the same or 192.168.1.1). More detailed information usually indicated on back side the router itself (on the bottom) or in technical documentation. Your login and password will also be indicated here.

    So, after you have specified your username and password, click “OK” and you will be in the settings panel of your router. Now we should move on to the next branch of settings.

    Basic settings => wireless mode => statistics wireless mode. As a result, in the window that opens, that is, on the right side, we will see the number of currently connected wireless stations.

    As you can see, in my case, one device is connected - a tablet computer. It is worth noting that in these statistics you can clearly see the MAC address of the connected device, the type of encryption and the total number of transmitted/received packets.     Be sure to read this article, and you will immediately know what this address is, why it is needed and what it is all about. After all, it is the MAC address that I would say is the key point in identifying other people's computers connected to your computer.

    I’ll also add that you can see who is connected to the Wi-Fi router via cable. To do this, you will need to go to the “DHCP” tab, and then to the “DHCP Client List”.

    In my case there are two devices. The second device is a laptop, which is connected via network cable. Not only the MAC address of the device is indicated here, but also the IP address that was assigned during connection.

    So, how to find out who is connected to my WiFi we have considered it. But what if, when checking, it turns out that there are one or even several completely alien MAC addresses, and this in turn tells us that our Internet is being used for free strangers, and only you pay. Agree, this is not fair. In this case, someone else's MAC address can simply be blocked.

    How to do this you ask? Very simple. To do this, it will be enough to filter out the extraneous MAC address. Go to the MAC Address Filtering tab, then click Enable. After this, you should set the button on the first parameter, as shown in the figure below.

    Finally, you should add someone else's MAC address and save the settings.

    Thus, you and I have closed access to the Internet for unauthorized users. If your Wi-Fi router initially has a password set for accessing the Internet, then in this case it will not be possible to easily connect to your Wi-Fi router.     Find out exactly who is currently connected to wifi router, quite simple. There are several options for this. A program designed specifically for such purposes will help you find out who has connected to the network. In the same way, you can find out who connected to wi-fi using the router control panel.

    Both methods are good and correct. The program, for example, allows you to find out that someone has just joined the network. And the router’s web interface not only “sees” the connected device, but is also capable of blocking unauthorized access forever.

    Overview of connected devices in the router settings

    So the first way to know that someone is connected to wi-fi router, consists of viewing the control panel of the router itself. To do this, you only need to make a few clicks and know some basic things:

    1. you will need to find out the address to log into the control panel;
    2. need to be connected to wireless network;
    3. know the login and password to access the router responsible for distributing the Internet.

    Obtaining this data is easy. Just find out the model and look on the manufacturer’s website necessary information.     It is enough to look at the MAC address of the device to compare it with the response from the router interface. And if they match, then the device is legally on the network. This is just the first way to view devices. There are other options to find out who is “sitting” on our router.

    Programs for viewing a list of devices connected to Wi-Fi

    Naturally, in addition to the way to determine who is connecting to wi-fi using the control panel of your router, there is also the ability to do this through a program. For this purpose, there are developments for both PC and phone. But we will only talk about PC programs. There are several types of them, but they all work according to general principle. There is an appeal to the router, where the information is taken from. That is, the program for viewing connected devices performs the operations from the list above, saving the user from unnecessary actions.

    This program is used to view devices connected to the router, the first of its kind. When it comes to Wi-Fi Guard, you should remember that its pioneer developers decided to exclude the router from viewing the list of active connections. This is due to the simplicity of the interface and functionality. There is no option to quickly disconnect a user in the program. But it is present beep, notifying about an active connection. True, in order to find out that the “extra” person has just connected to the network, you need to hold the program background process. It minimizes to the tray, from where it conducts monitoring.

    Essentially no different from the previous version. Performs the same function: the program is used to find out who else is connected to my wifi router. Also allows you to notify about new connections the moment they are established. It should be noted that the development of this program is ongoing at this point in time. Therefore, the first difference is the interface, adapted to latest versions Windows OS. Alas, Network Watcher does not yet “know how” to break active compounds. Although this function is stated to be under development. It is possible that Network Watcher will soon be added to the program. In the meantime, it is possible to find out who is connecting to wi-fi while it is running. There is a function for logging and displaying a list of devices connected while the program was running.

    Disabling foreign devices from Wi-Fi

    Once you have found out who is connected to my WiFi, you should move on. Now we have to take action without harming other users connected to the network. Or be able to freely connect to it. In theory, everything looks simple: just turn off the device. But in practice this is not enough. After all, a simple disconnect will allow a third-party “client” to reconnect to the network almost immediately. This means a more radical solution will be required.

    When analyzing the question of how to determine who is connecting to our network, we already looked at the router control panel. But it serves not only to look active connections on the computer. Also, using the web interface (this is essentially the same thing), it is possible to make changes to the router settings. This will allow you to find out and see who is connected to the network, as well as block further access for “left” users. The following steps need to be taken:

    • Log in to the router control panel (see above). This feature has previously been used to check connections.
    • In the Wireless section, find the Mac Filtering item. The necessary operations are performed through it. It is also possible to configure a Firewall on the router. But it's a little more complicated than setting up access rules through address filtering:

    • Select the rule to use. The difference is that in the first case, access is blocked for all devices except those specified in the list. In the second case, “listed” devices will be blocked. Which solution to apply depends on the user.
    • Having made your choice, click Add new so that the following window appears:

    After this setup, you can instantly disconnect the unwanted subscriber from wi-fi. Of course, this method is very complicated and it is easier to change the password. But this does not mean that the “freeloader” is not able to learn a new one and connect again.

    In general, the access denial method is imperfect. If you simply change the MAC address, there is a chance that you will be connected to someone else's network again. Which means we should move on. And the next logical action is to change the wireless network password. And this leads to the next question.

    How to protect your Wi-Fi network from hacking

    It's actually quite easy to defend yourself. Enough to have strong password, and ideally also change it with some frequency, which will ensure high safety. Changing the password helps if someone manages to find out Old Password and connect using the code. After changing the password, any connected user will lose connection until they enter New Password. In some ways this solution is more in a fast way protecting your Wi-Fi than blocking by MAC address.

    How to make fun of freebie lovers

    After you can see who is connected to my wifi, you can resort to non-standard solution. The user can really be punished by being funny, but in an unusual way. And it differs from the previous ones in that it will not prohibit access to the network, but will make it unbearably painful.

    The point is that a rule is created when we do not disable foreign devices, but greatly limit their access speed. However, the availability of this function depends on the router model. The examples above show a model that “cannot” do this. But the most common ones, like the TL-WR740n and RT-N10E, have a similar option, and its setting is in the same place as MAC address filtering. As a result, a person who manages to find out the network password will regret connecting. After all, it’s unpleasant to find out that you, the cunning one, connected to your neighbor’s wifi, can use the Internet at a speed of 5 kb/s. It’s not always worth turning off those who like free “bait”; sometimes you need to act cruelly and make sure that the cheese really lies in the mousetrap...

    Well, since we started talking about today, let's continue this conversation. In this case, I would like to talk about such a pressing problem as connecting a certain user to your wireless router. I can say that the problem has acquired gigantic proportions, and due to the fact that many users do not even suspect that someone is using their connection, there are more and more such insolent people.

    Just imagine. You have connected to the network, configured your router, connected your laptop and phone to it, surf the Internet and enjoy life. But suddenly you begin to notice that in the evenings the connection speed clearly drops and even such popular sites as Google load with a very long delay. Of course, the reason could be some kind of virus that managed to penetrate your PC, or, for example, a problem with the equipment of the provider, but often the reason lies in a neighbor who guessed the password to your Wi-Fi.

    Today I will talk about how to view the list of those connected to your router and limit access to it.

    We are looking for people to join

    There are two methods to find intruders. One of them does not require installing any additional software at all. Let's start with him.

    We need to get to. In general, I talked about this in great detail in one of my recent articles, but so that you don’t waste time, I’ll repeat. First, we look for the address to enter the settings panel. It is usually located on the bottom cover of the router, where you can also find your login and password:

    The addresses may vary depending on your device model, for example: 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. In fact, this does not play any role. Add the address to search bar browser, press Enter and the main page for entering the configurator opens in front of us. Enter your username and password and find yourself in the settings panel.

    Here we select the Wi-Fi section - “Station list”. Be careful, your list of devices connected to the router may be under a completely different address, for example, “Wireless mode” - “Wireless mode statistics”. In any case, it doesn't matter - you need to find connection statistics.

    In this section we see everyone connected to the router. Or rather, the MAC addresses of these devices. I talked about what it is just yesterday.

    The screenshot shows only one device. This is my smartphone. It can be easily disabled by clicking on the “Disconnect connection” button in the router configurator. You should have approximately the same picture, but there may be many times more connected devices. You find which ones are yours by comparing MAC addresses and disable them. In addition, you must immediately change your Wi-Fi password. But this, unfortunately, is often not a panacea, because if someone was able to guess the password once, they will probably be able to guess it again. Therefore, there is only one way out - filter MAC addresses. But more on that later. In the meantime, I want to talk about a program that will help you see who is connected to your router.

    Wireless Network Watcher

    We will talk about the Wireless Network Watcher program. It is distributed completely free of charge, takes up little space, and therefore will become a reliable assistant.

    Download the program (I recommend downloading it only from the official website), install and run. You need to run it only from the computer to which the router is connected, otherwise there is no point. After a short scan, you will see a list of devices that are connected to the router, and you can also find out their MAC address and manufacturer.

    Unlike the previous case, when we found attackers through the configurator, here you won’t be able to disable them - only information is displayed on the screen. To disable you will still have to use the configurator.

    Filtering MAC addresses

    So, you now know the MAC addresses of all your devices. Let's add them to the list of exceptions. Thanks to this, no one will be able to connect to your router, even if they know the Wi-Fi password. This is very effective way protection that you should take advantage of.

    We go to the router interface, select the Wi-Fi - MAC filter section and allow access.

    Then open the MAC addresses tab and add the addresses of your devices one by one.

    After all devices have been added, be sure to save the settings and reboot the router directly from the interface.

    Check if your gadgets are connected to the router. Also try connecting with unknown device to be sure of protection. If the Internet does not work for an unknown device, then you did everything right.

    What to do if the MAC address of the gadget changes? I had this problem on my smartphone. I had to go into its settings and edit the entry so that the MAC address would become static. You need to do the same.
