• The keyboard does not work what to press. Instructions: What to do if the keyboard on your computer does not work. The most common types of keyboard problems and methods for resolving them

The keyboard is the main tool when working on a computer, without which work is almost impossible. Of course, you can enter information using a mouse and on-screen keyboard, but this method is inconvenient and full-fledged work it won't work.

In this article we will tell you what to do if the keyboard on your computer does not work and consider everything possible reasons this malfunction.

The keyboard is a fairly simple device and usually works flawlessly. However, there are times when the keyboard indicator lights up, but nothing is printed.

Why the keyboard doesn't work: reasons

There are two types of reasons why a computer keyboard may not work:

    1. Mechanical (cable break, moisture ingress, excessive contamination of the keyboard, violation of the integrity of the connection ports, and so on).
    2. Software (software failures, incorrect settings BIOS, incorrect keyboard drivers, etc.).

Let's look at all the main reasons why the keyboard does not work and troubleshooting methods.

Problem with the cable or keyboard port

The first step is to assess the physical condition of the keyboard.

Look at the button indications Caps Lock And Num Lock. Most likely, if they work, then physically everything should be fine with the keyboard.

Visually inspect the keyboard cable. It may be pinched or cut. For example, many pet owners have pets that chew cables.

Also, visually check the keyboard connection port to see if there are any fractures or bends in it. There are two types of keyboard connection ports - USB and PS/2.

It often happens that when people try to connect to a computer in a PS/2 port, they break off the tip of the wire and the keyboard does not connect.

If externally the cable USB keyboards and the connection port look good, then try plugging the keyboard into another port Computer USB. The port on the computer itself may be damaged. If the keyboard works in another port on the computer, then you have a problem with USB port. Usually there are several of them on the computer and you can simply leave the keyboard connected to the port that works.

In the case of a keyboard with a PS/2 port, you should check the functionality of the keyboard connection port on another computer, since there is only one such port on the motherboard. To test the functionality of your computer's PS/2 port, you will have to find another such keyboard.

Spilled liquid and dirt on the keyboard

A flooded keyboard is a headache for all IT specialists and a goldmine for all laptop repair service centers. Very often, when working on a computer, people pour tea, coffee, beer and other liquids onto the keyboard. As a result, the keyboard may fail.

As a rule, it is easy to determine visually and by smell that liquid has been spilled on the keyboard. Carefully inspect the keyboard. Remove a couple of keys. If you see that there are traces of spilled liquid or food on the keyboard or under the keys, then you have two options. Or buy new keyboard, or meticulously disassemble the flooded keyboard, clean it, dry it and put it back together. With a high degree of probability, the keyboard will work.

Earlier, we already talked in detail about how to clean a computer keyboard at home.

    Checking USB settings in BIOS

In the event of a power failure, the computer may change BIOS settings, which contains an item about enabling and disabling support for USB keyboards on your computer.

Additionally, in this way you can check the functionality of the keyboard in principle, since it may not work in Windows, but work in the BIOS. In this case, the failure is caused by software or drivers.

To enter the BIOS and check the settings, do the following:

    1. Turn on your computer.
    2. Press the DEL button on your keyboard until the BIOS settings window appears.
    3. In the BIOS settings, find the USB Keyboard Support or Legacy USB menu.
    4. Make sure the setting is in the Enable state. If it says Disable, then switch to Enable.

You can also set the remaining BIOS settings related to USB to Enable. You may be able to get ports on the front panel of your computer case that once stopped working.

    Software or driver failure

Keyboards with older PS/2 connectors are more susceptible to software glitches. However, there are still quite a lot of such keyboards in use, although manufacturers have almost stopped producing them.

To resolve the problem of your keyboard not working due to software, you need to turn on your computer and log into your desktop. Since the keyboard has stopped working and does not print, but account a password may be set, you will need to use on-screen keyboard and type the password with the mouse.

Now that you are on the desktop of your computer, you need to get to Device Manager.

In Windows 8 and Windows 10, to do this, right-click on the button Start and select device Manager.

In Windows 7, left-click on the button Start. Next, right-click on the word Computer and select Computer managementdevice Manager.

Device Manager displays information about all devices on your computer. Expand the Keyboards branch. If there is an orange question mark next to your keyboard, it means the device is not installed correctly on the system.

Right click on your keyboard and select Delete.

After that click ActionUpdate hardware configuration.

The computer will rescan all devices and install the keyboard correctly.

Factory defect or keyboard has reached the end of its service life

Any technology tends to break down and fail. If the keyboard was purchased relatively recently, then you may have encountered a manufacturing defect. In this case, you can contact the keyboard manufacturer's support service and expect a replacement device.

The fact is that many manufacturers value their reputation and, without entering into long debates with the buyer, immediately send a brand new keyboard by mail.

If you have had the keyboard for more than a year, then most likely it has failed due to service life and you should buy a new one.

Instructions: What to do if the keyboard on your computer does not work

The keyboard is the main tool for entering information, without which working on a computer is impossible. Most often, for this device to work flawlessly, you just need to connect it to a computer, and that’s it. necessary drivers it will install automatically. This happens in most cases, but not always. There are situations when, when you connect a keyboard to a USB or PS/2 connector, it is not detected on the computer and does not show any signs of operation - the indicators do not light up and the buttons do not work. In this article, we offer instructions on what to do if the keyboard on your computer does not work.

Why doesn't the keyboard work on my computer?

Connecting the keyboard to the computer is as simple as possible - just insert its wire into the corresponding connector on the motherboard, and after that the device will start working. There are wireless keyboards, the radio receiver of which is inserted into a USB connector, after which the device works if the distance between the transmitter and the device is maintained.

Due to the simplicity of the process of connecting a computer, we can conclude that there are only 2 reasons why the keyboard does not work on the computer:

    • Mechanical. There may be problems with the keyboard itself or the wire that connects it to the motherboard. The cause of the malfunction may also be a broken connector on the motherboard.
    • Software. Keyboard drivers are installed automatically, but the installation process for any software may fail and this situation no exception. In addition, problems may not be observed at the level operating system, and in the BIOS, where the corresponding settings for the keyboard are disabled.

Depending on which connector the keyboard is connected to the computer, we offer different options solutions to emerging problems.

What to do if the keyboard does not work on the computer via USB protocol

The most common interface for connecting a keyboard to a computer is USB. Information transfer rates from peripheral device the computer is enough, as through USB protocol 2.0 and via USB 3.0, so there is no difference in which connector the keyboard is connected to.

If the USB keyboard does not work when you turn on the computer, you need to do the following:

It is worth noting that users whose keyboard is connected to the motherboard via USB may have problems entering the BIOS on the computer boot screen if using old version basic software. In this case, you need to find a keyboard with a PS/2 connector or use the appropriate adapter.

What to do if the keyboard does not work on your computer using the PS/2 protocol

Keyboard manufacturers are trying to move away from the PS/2 connector, abandoning it in favor of USB. It is very difficult to find a keyboard with a PS/2 connector on sale, but if you come across such a peripheral and it does not work with loading windows, most likely the problem is related to the drivers. To make the keyboard work, you need to do the following:

It is worth noting that a similar problem with keyboards connected via the PS/2 protocol most often occurs due to an error when installing the i8042prt.sys or kbdclass.sys driver.

Why does the keyboard on my computer not work and what should I do?

Fortunately, at the moment the keyboard is such a popular device that you can even buy it in a regular supermarket, not to mention specialized stores. Despite the simplicity of this gadget, problems and malfunctions may arise with it. One of the most well-known problems goes something like this: “the keyboard has stopped working.” I just stopped and that’s it. Today I will talk about why this can happen and how you can deal with the problems. It must also be added that in in this case we'll talk about computer keyboard, and I’ll talk about the laptop keyboard next time, since there’s a lot between them big difference.

    Causes of problems and solutions

Where should I start? First of all, you shouldn't panic. Yes, that's right, because in 90% of cases your problem is very easily solved.

    • If you have a pet that loves to climb everywhere, I recommend that you take a look at the back wall of the system unit. It is possible that a cat passing by touched the keyboard plug and it simply fell out of the socket.
    • Next possible option- a glitch that occurred in the operating system. For such cases, there are two solutions to the problem. Firstly, unplug the plug for a few seconds and insert it back, and secondly, you can restart the computer if the first option does not help. After restarting the PC, the device starts working in 90% of cases.
    • If you are using a PS/2 keyboard, carefully inspect the connector itself. The fact is that its legs could be bent, which need to be aligned, otherwise it will not work. For this, you will need tweezers (ideally) or something sharp like knitting needles.
    • Most modern keyboards (as well as mice) are connected to a PC using a modern USB system. It is recommended to change the USB port and check the functionality of the device. Ideally, it is better to check its performance on another PC or laptop.
    • It is theoretically possible that the keyboard has given up its life, in other words, it has become unusable. However, in practice this happens very rarely, and often only one or several buttons fail. It's easy to check - connect the device to another computer or laptop.

    • One of the funniest problems is related to entering numbers - users complain that right side the gadget where the numbers are located does not work. In fact, it is connected upon request with the Num Lock button, which is located above the numbers. This is done so that you don’t accidentally click on the numbers.
    • Often on the keyboard, in the places where the buttons are located, the rubber band, which is located inside the case, slips. Sometimes various crumbs and other small objects get on it. To get rid of them, the keyboard must be disassembled and cleaned. By the way, large crumbs can get under one of the keys and it will stop being pressed. In this case, it is enough to remove only one key, which, fortunately, is very easy to do.
    • If you have a fairly expensive keyboard with many additional buttons You may need to install separate drivers. Without them, the keyboard can and will work, but except for individual buttons. You need to install drivers for the device, which can be found on the manufacturer’s official website.
    • Speaking of drivers. In some cases, the problem arises not with the keyboard itself, but with the driver that is responsible for its operation. It may have been damaged. This problem can be solved in two ways: either update the drivers to the latest version, or roll back the system to a few days ago when the keyboard was working.
    • If you just purchased a computer and have never used it, try going into the BIOS - keyboard support may be disabled. In the BIOS menu, you need to find an item called USB Keyboard Support and change it from Disabled to Enabled.
    • In case you are using wireless device(keyboard), which runs on batteries, don’t forget to charge it. It probably just ran out of charge and therefore stopped working.
    • Users also often complain that the keyboard does not work in games or programs. Fortunately, in most cases this problem is easy to deal with. The fact is that by default the controls are programmed for certain keys, which you can change at your discretion. To do this, you need to go to the game settings. The same fully applies to hot keys.

Finally, I remind you once again that in most cases you can solve the problem with the keyboard yourself. Well, if it still refused to work, then you will have to spend money on buying a new one, because repairs of this device usually unreasonably expensive.

What to do if the keyboard does not turn on

Even experienced users may experience some confusion if, when turning on the PC and loading windows keyboard for some reason it stopped working. A variant of the problem is when only separate buttons. Less experienced windows users and computers in general, people immediately think about repairing or buying a new device. But maybe the problem is in the operating system - has the keyboard stopped working? If you have another one at hand, then checking the functionality of the first one will not be difficult. But what to do when this is not possible? We will try to figure out why the keyboard on the computer does not work and how to solve this problem.

For what reasons did the keyboard stop working?

In total, there are five main situations, the occurrence of which may result in the device not responding and the reason why the keyboard stopped working when turned on:

    • immediate breakdown;
    • PS/2 / USB port malfunction;
    • lack of normal contact between the keyboard connector and PS/2 / USB;
    • problems with the wireless keyboard;
    • blocking the device in windows virus or malware.

A banal breakdown is the most common reason that your keyboard is not working. As for the malfunction of the port, although it is rare, it can burn out for some reason. Despite the fact that users rarely encounter this situation, it certainly cannot be ruled out. It is also possible that the keyboard is like with USB input, and PS/2 - does not work because you connected the connector to the port incorrectly. Another option for its inoperability lies in bent contacts.

If the computer does not work, we begin to have problems, because our own PC has replaced a lot of functions for us today. First, you should not panic, especially for beginners; a computer is a piece of equipment that tends to break down. Try to determine what exactly is not functioning.

5 reasons why the keyboard on your computer does not work

If all devices have responded, but the keyboard is silent and does not respond to our actions, then it is worth eliminating the most popular 5 particular reasons:

      1. The cord was incorrectly connected to PS/2 or USB.
      2. Perhaps the port of one or another keyboard connector has burned out.
      3. The keyboard has become unusable.
      4. If we have a wireless option, we check the presence of the necessary drivers and utilities, as well as whether the battery is working.
      5. The presence of a virus code that has blocked the keyboard.

    What to do

    We eliminate the above problems.

Check the correct connection to the system unit.

Check the integrity of the cable for kinks and breaks.

You can verify that the keyboard is working using another PC.

Sometimes, due to inexperience or carelessness, it happens to bend the antennae PS/2 connectors , they must be aligned with tweezers or a knife. When at least one breaks, it is necessary to change the cable input or the entire input device. Try to remember: purple the color indicates the keyboard cord, and green - mice.

    PS/2 connectors.

Please remember that the battery as well as battery devices, tends to discharge, then it is necessary to replace the power source or fully charge it.

In addition to the problems described above, which are solved quickly and are called “typical”, there are also more significant ones.

Buttons are pressed but do not respond

There is a classic version of the keyboard and its multimedia version. You can make them work by configuring the necessary drivers. These programs may change or fly off"When setting up the OS. Such keyboards are rare; most manufacturers install drivers without our participation, in automatic mode.

It happens that the user simultaneously presses several buttons or a combination of them. In this case they " sink"and none of them responds. Make sure the keys are not obstructed foreign objects. Often crumbs get in, and the elastic band inside slips off. It is recommended to wipe the rubber band with a dry cloth, and the keyboard can be damp. When everything has been tried and the issue is not resolved, it’s time to think about buying a new peripheral device.

There is a situation where the keyboard is not fully functional; it is not possible to type the numbers on the right. To do this, check the keystroke "Num Lock".

The computer did not detect the keyboard.

In this case, you need to restart the PC, there is no result - go to the control panel. Calling context menu icon" System". Go to “Properties” and click “Hardware”. Finding the point "Device Manager", select a keyboard sign from the list and delete it. You should then close this window. Next, select the menu"Equipment Installation"and install the drivers for the keyboard.

These steps will help you get rid of software problems with an input device.

Checking the connection in the BIOS settings

When such methods do not produce results, you need to turn off the PC and turn it on again. Before loading the OS launch BIOS. Buttons are responsible for this Del, F2 or F10 depending on the configuration (you will find out more precisely when loading at the bottom of the screen)

Just because you use a USB-connected keyboard doesn't mean it can't fail at some point. No matter how cool and expensive it is, even such a keyboard can fail. By the way, I don't know about you, but I think that PS/2 keyboards are less vulnerable. True, if your keyboard on your laptop is covered, then you can either choose , or .

Problems exiting building usb– there can be quite a lot of keyboards. For example, damage to the wire, port, drivers and much more. Naturally, we will try to deal with this problem.

    • Non-working USB port

If, when connected to one of the ports, the keyboard does not respond at all, then try connecting to another. Although, it happens that the port works when you connect another device. Perhaps this is some kind of glitch. Also, the port may not work due to a large voltage surge on the motherboard.

If, when you connect the keyboard to all USB ports, it does not work, then try connecting other devices to them. If they do not work, then the problem is in the USB ports of the computer.

You can also try connecting the keyboard not to USB 3.0 (indicated in blue), but to USB 2.0. And try installing or updating drivers for motherboard.

    • Keyboard wire pulled out

Well, I think that we are not so inattentive that we would not notice the pulled out wire. In any case, even if it doesn't come out, pull it out, wait a couple of seconds and put it back in again.

    • Installing drivers

After finding out that the keyboard does not work through any port, we try, if everything works fine there, tabs switch smoothly, then the problem is present precisely at the operating system level. It is possible that the problem is with the drivers.

Try it for your keyboard. This can be done through the device manager. You can enter it if you enter it in the search "Device Manager", or press Win+X and select the desired item.

Opening the manager window, look for the section "Keyboards", open it and right-click on the item, then click "Delete".

After this, restart your computer. Next, reinsert the keyboard into any port, the drivers should be installed automatically.

Some manufacturers provide special drivers that can be downloaded from the official website. Keep this in mind. And if there was also a driver disk with the keyboard, then use it.

    • USB controller disabled in BIOS

If the motherboard fails, the USB controller may be disabled in the BIOS, which is why the keyboard may not work. On some motherboard models this function disabled initially. Then, to work with the BIOS, you will need a PS/2 keyboard in any case.

So, we enter the BIOS and look for the USB controller parameters. On different motherboards this item may be called differently, for example, "Legacy USB Support" or "Keyboard Support". In some BIOS versions may be called "Legacy Support". Now look, if the value is “Disabled”, then change it to “Enabled”. There should be another parameter nearby "USB Controller", it must also be in the Enabled position. After this, exit the BIOS and save the settings.

    Jpg" align="center" lightbox="on" captionposition="center"]

    • The keyboard is faulty

This point is the very last and this is understandable. If nothing works, the keyboard does not respond to any actions, then most likely it is broken. If it does not work on other computers, then there are definitely no options, then the keyboard is not working.

That's all, I hope that this instruction at least helped you somehow. If anything, write in the comments, we’ll sort it out.

    Instructions

When connecting a PS/2 keyboard: plug the cable from the keyboard into the connector of the corresponding color located on the rear panel of the system unit, restart the computer.

At USB connection keyboards need to be activated USB support in Bios. Enter the BIOS by pressing the "Delete" key when starting the computer. Find USB settings Controller and check the settings to "Enabled". Save changes made by pressing the F10 or "U" key. Exit Bios systems by pressing F10 or "U". Restart your computer.

If applying the above instructions does not lead to a positive result, do the following: right-click on the “My Computer” shortcut and find the “Manage” item. Select the “Device Manager” category, find the keyboard in the list of devices and right-click on the label. Select “delete” and reconnect the keyboard. Select the "update hardware configuration" task in the "Action" section of Device Manager. You can also check the section " USB controllers» (USB Controller) for errors by selecting the “treatment” function in the device manager menu.

In addition to the complex reasons that Windows does not see the keyboard, there may also be very minor ones: the keyboard wire is pinched or there is a manufacturing defect.

    Please note

If the keyboard itself is working properly, but the multimedia keys are not functioning properly, you should install drivers from installation disk, which should come with the keyboard. If such a disk is not available, download the installation multimedia files via the Internet, guided by the manufacturer of this peripheral device and its model number.

Many users have encountered the problem of computer USB ports not working. In some cases, this problem can be resolved by simply rebooting the system. But often it is more serious and can have various causes.

One common reason is a BIOS failure. To fix the problem, restart the computer, at the very beginning of its boot, press the Delete key to enter the BIOS settings. Depending on its version, you may need to press another button, the most common alternative options are F1 and F10. If none of them leads to the desired result, read the instructions for the motherboard. Next, go to the Advanced section and check the value of the USB Controller item. If it is Enabled, the reason for USB inoperability is not BIOS error, if it is a different value, set it to Enabled and save the changes.

Another common reason is improper operation USB drivers. This may happen as a result of any system errors or failures. Launch Device Manager. To do this, select “Start” -> “Control Panel” -> “Device Manager”, or right-click on the “My Computer” icon on the desktop, select “Manage” from the list, and then “Device Manager”.

Find the “USB Controllers” section and click on it. If opposite one of the points there is yellow icon with a question mark, update the corresponding driver. To do this, right-click on the faulty item and select “Update drivers”.

If automatic update failed for some reason, install the driver manually. To do this, open the official website of the motherboard manufacturer and download for it latest version drivers, then install.

Another reason malfunction USB ports are disabled Plug&Play service. To launch it, select “Start” -> “Control Panel” -> “Administrative Tools” -> “Services”. In the list that appears, find the Plug&Play item. If the Status column is set to a value other than Running, set it to that value.

If none of the above methods help, there is a high probability that the USB ports are burnt out. In this case, take system unit to be checked at one of the service centers.
