    Hello internet! Today I would like to talk about RSS news feeds and RSS readers (RSS reader, RSS readers) for these feeds. I'll tell you why RSS feeds are needed and what they are. I will also do a short review of RSS readers. In this review I will only include those RSS readers that are really easy to use. I will not clutter up the post with various services and programs that I found on the Internet... No, only those programs and online services that deserve my close attention. At the end of the post, I will mention some sites and programs that were not included in the review. Also at the end there will be a link to download the programs.

    In order to understand what RSS readers are, you need to know about the essence of RSS. A RSS is a news feed of something, in particular, a website. When they see the word “RSS”, many associate it with news from a website or blog. In particular, this is true, but you can create your own RSS feed and publish what you want there.

    RSS reader(s) are programs or online services that read the RSS news feeds you specify and produce a list. It is them that I will consider in this post, and you, without closing this page, choose the most suitable RSS reader for yourself. Well, or you’ll find something else on the Internet or from the list at the end of this post. But I warn you – you won’t find anything better.

    In general, RSS is a useful thing. Some people simply underestimate her, but in vain, guys, in vain. A very useful thing. You can collect all the news in one pile and be aware of everything that is happening. There is no need to open websites in hopes of new articles. By the way, I know a couple of interesting tricks on this topic, so I will gradually reveal them in subsequent posts. But on one condition, that RSS will be at least in some place related to the topic of the post.

    RSS readers can be divided into 3 types:

    • Online services.
    • RSS readers built into the browser.
    • Individual programs that require installation on your computer.

    I find the most convenient are the latest RSS readers that are installed on a computer. They have one wonderful feature, which I will talk about in due time. In the meantime, I’ll say that each type of RSS reader is good in its own way.

    How to subscribe to RSS feed

    Although more specific will not be “How to subscribe”, but “How to find a link to subscribe.” This section is for those who are hearing about RSS for the first time. And those who have not been on the Internet for the first time came here rather for a review, which will be discussed a little later.

    I will be brief, since there is nothing complicated here. The screenshot below shows the RSS links that you have probably come across.

    If the site you are interested in does not have such links, then enter the word “RSS” into the search form and search, perhaps you will find information on this matter.

    RSS readers/readers built into the browser

    The advantage of such readers is ease of use. In a couple of clicks you can subscribe to updates on the open site. In addition, browsers have synchronization with the creators’ server. Thus, when you sit down at another computer, open the browser and log into your account, the browser may offer to download these bookmarks. I don’t know how to do it with RSS, I haven’t tried it. I just know that synchronization is available in Opera and Google Chome, but I don’t know how it is in Firefox. For Chrome you need to install an extension, which, fortunately, is full in the Google online store and they are all free. The only thing is that you won’t be able to save a list of RSS feeds to the server if it’s an unofficial extension, which, as far as I know, is not.

    The disadvantages include too little functionality, but as you already understand, there are browser extensions that can expand it.

    Firefox

    To add an RSS feed to Firefox browser, you will need to open the RSS link (in the screenshot below you can see what such a button looks like. It is on all blogs.) then go to the “Bookmarks” menu, select “Subscribe to news feeds” if the browser did not immediately offer to subscribe. If offered, then in the screenshot below you can see what it looks like.

    Internet Explorer

    Opera

    It's a little different here. Go to a website or blog, click on the RSS link and subscribe. How to subscribe in the screenshot below.

    Online services for reading RSS feeds

    Yandex.News

    Here is the link. In the Yandex.News service, news is divided into categories. You can select the categories that you want to see in the “My News” tab, and also add your RSS news feeds of your favorite blogs or sites there. Are you interested this service? Then follow the link I gave you above.

    If you have not used this service yet, then after clicking on the link you will have something like the following picture:

    Just mark the categories that interest you. I choose: auto, internet, science, VKontakte. Scrolling below you will see a field for entering RSS links. Feel free to add your favorite blogs there.

    In order to make changes in the future, you will need to go to the “My News” tab. On the right you will see the “Edit” button. By clicking, you can make the necessary changes.

    The Old Reader

    Another service for reading RSS feeds. I won’t tell you how and where to click, I think you can figure it out yourself. I can’t say that using online services is convenient. It's not mine. I only recognize the Yandex.News service and I don’t use it. I just liked The Old Reader better than all the others, so I included it here. Whether it's worth using is up to you to decide. Here is the link.

    RSS readers installed on your computer

    I find these readers to be the most effective. Why? Because they have one great advantage and that is the desktop notification feature. Therefore, you won’t have to keep your browser open all the time.

    Such readers are needed by those who want to be the first to receive latest news. For example, an interesting competition appears on the blog you are reading. You will be the first to know about it, even when the blog author did not have time to send an e-mail newsletter. Consequently, the chance of success of becoming the winner of the competition increases. Especially if the competition is related to the speed of task completion among participants or is limited in time. In general, it’s very convenient, I’ll say.

    Now I will give you a brief overview of RSS readers that are installed on your computer. These are the readers I'm delighted with. I recently came across an English-language site that had a list of all RSS readers. I filtered everything out and decided to write a post. I found 2 programs that are worthy of attention.

    QuiteRSS – as the most convenient and high-quality RSS reader

    I discovered this program for myself relatively recently from the list of an English-language site. If I had not started writing this post, I would still be sitting on FeedReader, more about her later.

    The program turned out to be the most convenient of all. I'm very pleased with the site favicons. In all other readers you have to read carefully and look for the RSS feed you need. Here this matter is simplified by looking at the site logo. It is possible to sort by tags. Also very fine settings, when compared with other RSS readers. And here’s what the notification window about new posts on sites looks like:

    This window can be edited in the settings. Width, number of records displayed, elements on and off.

    I think that's enough. Maybe in the future I will do detailed analysis each program, although it is a bit boring. Let's see. The following program is FeedReader.

    FeedReader – as one of the most convenient RSS readers

    As you already understood, before QuiteRSS, I used FeedReader. In principle, the program is good, but still, in my opinion, it loses to QuiteRSS. There are fewer settings and images are not loaded from RSS feeds.

    Although there is one advantage that I don’t need, it still exists. This is synchronization with an FTP server.

    Address, port, username, password - standard requirement for connecting to the server via FTP protocol. Where can I get such a server? You can find hosting on the Internet and register on it. I recommend BeGet. If you decide to choose another, then before registering, look at what the hosting provides. Among other things, there should be something like “Access to the server via FTP”. If this is the case, then you can safely register. After registering in the control panel, create a user with access to the server via FTP. Then copy the data and enter it into the program, so the RSS feeds will be saved on the server. If you are sitting at another computer, you can always download these news feeds to this program. To do this, you need to specify the server data in the same way.

    When new posts appear on sites, the tray icon changes its color from gray to orange. The program has a notification function in the form of a pop-up window, just like the previous program. But it either doesn’t pop up or does so very late.

    Feed Notifier – like a compact RSS reader

    The most compact I've ever seen. It is possible to use a proxy server, in the last post I mentioned proxies, you can go read it. The notification window works correctly. Here's what it looks like:

    Everything you need for those who like not to miss competitions on blogs.

    RSS FAST

    The program is colorful and convenient, but the functionality is clearly not enough. Although it copes with the main function like a cute little thing. The program is paid. I now use and will continue to use QuiteRSS and for good reason. Why did I mention this program then? Firstly, just express your opinion, and secondly, insert this referral link in the hope that something will fall into my hands. But after previous programs, no one is likely to buy RSS FAST. If you want more details, I have already given the link. There is a video and a description. Everything you need.

    Conclusion

    In conclusion, I decided to mention a few more programs and services. Many of the programs listed do not have a pop-up window feature. You can only find out about the news directly in the program. But still, perhaps you will find something for yourself.

    Programs: FeedDemon, RSS Bandit, Abilon, GreatNews, RSSOwl, SE-ReadRSS.
    Online services: feedly, newsblur, commafeed, reader.aol.ru, netvibes.

    That's all. Subscribe, comment. Join the VKontakte group. Bye!

    I present to your attention two wonderful programs for reading RSS feeds. What these programs have in common is that they are portable, you can install them on a flash drive and they will always be with you.

    But first of all, you need to understand why these programs are needed in general, if you understand this, then that’s great! If you understand, but not completely, then I recommend reading the article.

    NFReader

    The RSS aggregator NFReader doesn't have a lot of settings, but that's what makes it remarkable. It is worth noting the following advantages of this program:

    1) Simplicity. This is the most important advantage over other similar programs. Even an inexperienced user can understand the settings of this program.

    2) It is small in size and does not require installation.

    3) Supports export and import of channels using files in OPML format. You can export a single article to an html file.

    5) Quite a fast program, not demanding on system resources.

    6) Fully Russified.

    Among the shortcomings, I would note the following:

    1) There is no built-in browser.

    2) Does not support attachments.

    Although this can be considered a disadvantage, conditionally, since not everyone requires these functions.

    GreatNews

    The GreatNews RSS aggregator will appeal to those who like great functionality and a large number of settings.

    This program has a huge number of advantages, here are some of them:

    1) There is a built-in browser that allows you to open links in new tabs.

    2) You can synchronize with the Bloglines service.

    3) Export and import channels using OPML and XML files.

    4) There is an interesting option called Blog This, which allows you to post to a blog.

    5) There is a Track Comments function with which you can read Comments on an article.

    Of the minuses it is worth noting:

    1) Not completely Russified.

    2) For an inexperienced user It will be difficult to understand the settings.

    P.S. Russian language is selected in the settings:

    Viev\Language\Russian

    After the first launch of the program, you will have to spend a couple of minutes deleting pre-installed RSS feeds (take a look, maybe something will come in handy 8)).

    RSS allows you to avoid constantly running around all the sites you read in search of new publications, but to make sure that new articles from all the Internet resources you visit automatically arrive in one place for viewing. RSS is a way to receive new publications, usually in the format of article previews and links to their full versions on the Internet. Less commonly, the RSS format provides full versions of articles along with pictures.

    RSS is an indispensable tool for an active Internet user. Subscription buttons for RSS news feeds are not yet available on every site, but that’s all larger number owners of Internet resources use RSS along with a regular email subscription, or even instead of it. For website owners, RSS subscription is a convenient way to inform their user audience about the publication of new articles. And for users, RSS is an opportunity at a convenient time, in a convenient way, from a single window, view all new publications from all visited sites.

    To read RSS news (also known as RSS feeds, or simply news feeds), it is necessary that the sites you visit provide an RSS subscription. You also need an RSS aggregator, also known as an RSS reader. An RSS reader is an Internet service, desktop program, mobile application or a browser extension where RSS feeds are collected, processed and presented to the reader in a uniform format.

    How to subscribe to RSS feed?

    To subscribe to an RSS news feed, on the site you are reading, if it provides the ability to read RSS, you need to find the subscribe button.

    Often the RSS button is orange, but this is not the rule, and often this button looks stylized to match the site design.

    The RSS subscription button can also be in the form of a regular link.

    After clicking on the RSS subscription button, we will see either its XML form or a view in the format of the well-known FeedBurner web service. The latter can pass through RSS feeds and add them to the subscription form additional functionality, which allows you to immediately subscribe to an RSS reader from among those offered.

    The XML RSS subscription form is a universal standard.

    By copying the address of the XML form, you can add an RSS feed to any RSS reader you use, which, for example, is not in the list offered by the FeedBurner web service. To do this, the FeedBurner form has a special “Show XML” option.

    What type of RSS reader is best?

    It is, of course, impossible to answer unequivocally the question of which type of RSS reader is better - a mailer, a separate desktop program for Windows, an Internet service or a browser extension. Here everyone must choose the appropriate option for themselves. Let us note only a few features that are generally inherent in each individual type of RSS reader.

    Internet services for reading RSS

    Internet services for reading RSS feeds are advantageous because they are cross-platform. Whatever device or operating system no matter what a person uses, if he has access to the Internet, he will always log into his account and read the news. For some time, the best Internet service for reading RSS news was Google Reader, but it was closed in 2013. Another once-famous service, Yandex.Lenta, has undergone a serious transformation. The functionality of working with RSS subscriptions was transferred first to Yandex.Mail, and then to Yandex.News.

    There are not so many good Internet services for reading RSS news - with a nice interface, decent functionality, and all this for free. Here are the four best of them:

    — Inoreader.Com,

    - Theoldreader.com

    All these Internet services are designed like Google Reader. They allow you to sort RSS subscriptions into thematic folders, export and import collections of subscriptions, and log in in a couple of clicks using social accounts.

    Browser extensions for reading RSS

    If you need an RSS reader in a browser window, you can embed a special extension into the latter. All popular other clones based on Chromium have built-in extensions for reading RSS news in their stores. True, if they are not extensions of their Internet services that store users’ RSS subscriptions in separate account, and these are ordinary extensions with local data storage, such RSS readers will not have a cross-platform advantage. Despite the fact that the browsers mentioned above are equipped to synchronize user data, when switching to another device, not all of the listed web browsers even synchronize the extensions themselves, not to mention their settings, including collections of RSS subscriptions.

    However, many RSS extensions for these browsers include functions for exporting and importing RSS subscriptions, and before reinstalling Windows or switching to another computer device what you will need to do is export your RSS subscriptions to special file to import it into the browser extension on the new system.

    In the store Google browser Chrome provides several RSS reader extensions. These are, in particular, extensions of the Internet services mentioned above. There are also a couple of extensions that store user data locally. Let's note one of them - this is RSS Feed Reader.

    Unfortunately, this extension does not have Russian language support, but it is functional and convenient. RSS Feed Reader allows you to export and import RSS subscriptions, sort them into thematic folders, and customize the extension interface. RSS Feed Reader is built into the browser toolbar with a button, when clicked, the news appears in a small pop-up window. And interesting publications can be read immediately in full versions on their websites.

    Smart RSS is one of the best RSS extensions for Opera browsers and "Yandex.Browser". By the way, you can embed content from the Opera store into the latter. Essentially, Smart RSS is a clone of the RSS reader built into the old Opera 12.

    Browser Mozilla Firefox equipped with a standard tool for reading RSS news. This is a minimalistic RSS reader that allows you to follow new publications in your browser's bookmarks bar, but nothing more.

    A fully functional RSS reader for Fire Fox can be found in his extension store, and that is the NewsFox extension.

    The mentioned browser extensions and their analogues are not inferior in functionality to desktop RSS readers - programs that are installed on a computer. But still, the latter have one important advantage - desktop programs, unlike extensions, do not slow down the browser, if we are talking about far from the most powerful computers and laptops.

    Desktop RSS readers for Windows

    Desktop RSS readers are the most best option for those who work mostly with one Windows device, who prefer various additional features in addition to the main functions, who like order in their information and flexibility in interface settings.

    The QuiteRSS program is a functional RSS reader with a nice and friendly interface, which, in addition to regular version for installation into the system, it is also portable.

    RSS Bandit program - a multifunctional RSS reader based on the engine Internet browser Explorer.

    The FeedReader program is a lightweight, yet functional and customizable RSS reader with an ascetic design.

    FeedDemon is another powerful RSS reader that does not load your computer resources and is user-friendly. user interface.

    All of these desktop RSS readers are free to use and support the Russian language. Among their functional features:

    Various window layout options;
    working with tags;
    internal news search;
    the presence of an internal browser for viewing publications within the program;
    customizing the behavior of RSS subscriptions;
    sorting RSS subscriptions into thematic folders;
    export and import of news feeds;
    sound notification when news appears;
    as well as other opportunities for productive work with RSS.

    Mail clients

    Users who actively work with by email through software mail clients, they can use their built-in RSS readers to read RSS news. True, there are few mailers with a sensible, functional RSS reader included. So, popular mailers Microsoft Outlook, « Windows Mail Live", Mozilla Thunderbird are equipped with the ability to read RSS news, but this is a minimum of functionality. These mailers don't even have the ability to sort RSS subscriptions into thematic folders.

    But the Opera Mail mailer is equipped with a fairly convenient and functional RSS reader. This is another clone of the RSS reader that was built into old browser Opera 12.

    The well-known mailer “The Bat!” also has a functional RSS reader with a friendly user interface.

    Metro apps Windows 8/8.1

    Intelligent and free Metro applications for reading RSS in Windows store few. Basically, all RSS readers have an English-language interface, and rare Russified Metro applications can offer only a small part of the functionality that desktop RSS readers have. One of Metro's best RSS reader offerings is Modern Reader. IN free version application, you can make some interface settings. Modern Reader works in conjunction with, but the application can work independently of the service. Store your collection of RSS subscriptions and synchronize data between various devices in Modern Reader you can use your account Microsoft records. (More details about).

    But since Metro applications cannot have such strict requirements as desktop RSS readers, you can view your subscriptions along with other news in the standard application Windows systems 8, 8.1 and 10 - “News”. Along with ready-made information collections from popular news portals You can add your RSS subscriptions to the News application interface. And they will be synchronized along with other data when a Microsoft account is connected.

    Yes, RSS is not dead and is doing great.

    Back in 2013, after the closure of the most popular RSS feed aggregator, analysts predicted oblivion this format dissemination of news. Google Reader closed, but was replaced by dozens of services with improved ergonomics, pleasant design and a wide range of features.

    RSS (English Rich Site Summary) - a family of XML formats designed to describe news feeds, article announcements, changes in blogs, etc. Information from various sources, presented in RSS format, can be collected, processed and presented to the user in a form convenient for him by special programs - aggregators or online services. – Wikipedia

    Developers and owners of most sites have not given up on maintaining RSS feeds; using them is simple and convenient. This option for reading news can be an alternative social networks and twitter. Yes, imagine that the “tweeting” service has worthy competitors.

    Why do I need RSS?

    Benefits of RSS in Rich Reading Applications news feeds. Unlike twitter, you can organize viewing of various sites in the same type with established formatting. If you subscribe to 20 resources, each article will look standard, with the specified font, line spacing and background.

    This way you can save time and traffic, and you can also save articles for reading when there is no network. And no one limits the main message to a certain number of characters. Sometimes it is simply impossible to understand what kind of news has arrived on Twitter. With an RSS feed, you can even always see the news you need on your computer screen.

    Some will say that RSS is a thing of the past. Possibly, but at this stage it would be foolish not to consider time-tested technology for quick receipt necessary information. It’s interesting to know your attitude towards RSS, what clients you use and whether you see a future for this format.

    How does this work?

    We find the application we like and add sites, blogs or sites that interest us. information portals. Most RSS aggregators independently find all available feeds for a specified site. Sometimes developers divide feeds by topic, so you can only subscribe to selected areas.

    Immediately after the news is published, data will appear in the feed, the application will download it and inform you about it. Depending on the program and settings, we will see a news picture, headline and the first few lines from the post.

    We read or save the materials we like for later viewing, and mark the rest as read. If you are thinking about giving it a try, all you have to do is decide on an RSS client.

    One of the oldest RSS readers (appendix in App Store since April 2011) has proven itself well, and during its use it has earned every ruble spent on it. A developer with a strange name managed to create almost ideal client for collecting and reading news.

    The program has a lot of settings, you can customize the main screen of the program, select a design theme, flexibly configure the reading mode and reassign gestures. Such programs often pay attention to the ability to quickly mark as read several received news items. If you don’t look at the application for a day or two, a whole mountain of sorted materials will accumulate, you can quickly look through the headings and mark the ones you like, the rest will automatically be marked as viewed.

    The disadvantages of the program include the price (there is good analogues with a more pleasant price tag) and the lack of a version for iPhone. The author has repeatedly ignored requests from app fans to create a phone adaptation of Mr. Reader.

    What will interest Mr. Reader:

    • the application is time-tested;
    • a wide range of options and appearance settings;
    • customizable gesture controls.

    Another “old-timer” of the App Store, which since 2013 has already acquired its third full version. The developers relied on a strict minimalist design, but did not forget about the necessary and useful features.

    As always, we can customize appearance articles in reading mode and set additional options sort the entire list. The work with newsgroups and the ability to set up multiple accounts deserve special mention. If several people use the application, you can conveniently differentiate materials for each of them.

    It is worth noting that the developers have, of course, thoughtful synchronization in their arsenal. We start reading on the way to work with an iPhone or iPad and continue it on a Mac when we get to the office. You have to pay for a quality application.

    What will interest you in Reeder 3:

    • there are versions for iPhone, iPad and Mac with convenient synchronization;
    • very nice and stylish appearance.

    A relatively new application that appeared already in the “post-Google Reader era”. The developers have completely abandoned various interface elements; the program contains only text on a white background, diluted with pictures from the news. On the one hand, this allows you to concentrate as much as possible on reading, but on the other hand, it is not always clear which menu you are currently in or what the hierarchy of folders and sections in the program looks like.

    Moving between sections is carried out using gestures, which made it possible to further simplify the interface and increase the text area on the screen. Unfortunately, ergonomics were sacrificed. Present minimum required settings, some options are purchased separately.

    You can find fault with the list of articles displayed that is not the most visual, however, looking at the price tag of the program, you can forgive such trifles.

    Why Unread: RSS News Reader will interest you:

    • the lightest and most minimalistic design;
    • new ambitious developer;
    • free.

    Initially, this service was conceived as a way to add many channels to your account and synchronize the news you read between different devices. By the way, account Feedly supports all the described applications, if you have one, just enter it in the settings and immediately receive materials from all your favorite sites.

    After Google closing Reader Feedly developers have released their own mobile application and are trying to keep up with the times. All useful features of iOS are reflected in this client, there is support for split view and an application for Apple Watch.

    Over the past couple of years, Feedly has acquired a solid set of features and settings. If you tried to get used to this client several years ago, but failed due to the lack of one or another feature, be sure to try the application now.

    What Feedly will be interested in:

    • in recent years the application has acquired a large number opportunities;
    • several original options for displaying the news list;
    • free.

    The most unusual application in today's selection. Flipboard organizes all the news from your feed into a glossy magazine. Articles will be arranged in chronological order, reminiscent of printed layout. The application will pay more attention to some publications, group others into a column, and still others will appear as headings. Looks very cool and stylish.

    Unfortunately, this is not the first time I’ve tried to start using Flipboard, but it’s its varied design that always confuses me. Frequent page-turning animations and chaotically scattered materials turn from a highlight into a problem. While viewing large quantity news, it is difficult to concentrate; a lot of time is spent focusing attention.

    If needed unusual client to view a small amount of news, feel free to choose Flipboard, the program will not only show articles from the specified site, but also recommend thematic resources in selected areas, and here you can connect twitter and Google+ to track the feed in application format.

    Why Flipboard will interest you:

    • stylish and unusual design;
    • selection of news by topic;
    • browsing social networks;
    • free.

    My choice

    One of the first iPad apps I purchased was Mr. Reader. Several years ago, this aggregator reigned supreme in the RSS reader niche and gave a good head start to its competitors. Already at that time, the developer managed to come up with and implement most of the features that are now the norm for such programs.

    Then I was captivated by the appearance of the program and ease of use. This is achieved through fully customizable gestures. For example, you can move between articles with a vertical swipe, jump to the beginning or end by simply clicking on the right or left, etc.
