• Offline translator for Android with pronunciation. Choosing a good English-Russian offline translator for Android

    26.06.2015 from wpandr_adm

Currently, tablet owners often install a translator for Android on their device. For some, this application helps during study and work. Others download simply so that at any time they can see the translation of the word of interest. Whatever the reason for installing the application, it is important to choose a convenient and high-quality word and sentence converter.

    Online translators

Over the past few years, many programs have been released with different interfaces and functionality. Since most people have tablets connected to the Internet, online translators have become very popular. The advantage of such programs is that you can translate not only individual words and expressions, but also sentences and even text fragments. Such applications include:

    • Google Translate Language;
    • iTranslate;
    • Babylon Translator;
    • mTranslate;
    • Universal Translator and others.

Each online translator contains several pairs of languages for translation.

With such applications you can listen to the pronunciation of translated words. Online translator may have voice input function. This is very convenient if the owner of the tablet has doubts about the spelling of certain words. In this case voice translator for Android allows you to dictate words or sentences of interest.

Currently, there are translators for Android that are capable of translating using the camera. It is enough to photograph the required fragment and then send it to the program for processing. The application will process the information in a matter of seconds and translate the specified text.

This program for Android is very convenient if you have a printed fragment in front of you. This way you can save time on retyping.

    Offline translators

For platform Android developers create convenient offline translators. Their most important advantage is the ability to use them anytime and anywhere, regardless of the availability of the Internet. This can be either an English-Russian translator or programs with other language pairs. Good apps The following are considered to be of this kind:

    • Russian Offline Translator;
    • Oxford Russian Dictionary;
    • HedgeDict;
    • BADict;
    • Dict U and others.

Most often, an offline translator does not have a large database of words and is aimed only at translation when using a specific pair of languages. However, there are also utilities for Android that have a good vocabulary and functionality. For example, HedgeDict contains many dictionaries, such as English-Russian, Russian-Chinese, French, Italian, etc.

Many offline programs have a translation history. You can use it to view recent requests. Sometimes you can even make your own notes on translations in them. Another convenient feature of such applications for Android is the ability to create your own dictionaries. There you can enter the most frequently encountered words or those that are interesting and useful to you. The translator program can show not only the translation of a word, but also transcription, various meanings found in certain areas, as well as definitions of terms and other words. Not all offline translators have this advantage, but you can find one like it.

It is difficult to say which one is the best; usually, owners of devices on the Android platform choose an application based on its convenient functionality and interface.

    Program selection

If you have an Android tablet or smartphone, you can decide for yourself which application will be more convenient. To get acquainted, you can try several programs at once and then choose the one that suits you best in terms of its purpose and interface. In addition, the choice will depend on the presence or absence of Internet on the device, because online dictionaries will not help you if the Internet is not connected to the tablet.

The choice of program may also depend on the language pair. For those who deal with several languages at once, a multilingual dictionary will be useful. If the tablet owner only works with one specific pair, then there is no point in looking for an add-on with multiple languages. In this case, it would be rational to download a bilingual dictionary with a large database of words and expressions.

In addition to converters of words and sentences from one language to another, developers offer programs for translating phraseological units. Such expressions are especially difficult to convert from one language to another, and the application can come to your aid even offline. To work with such add-ons, you need to install them on your device and then start using them. Many of them are easily installed on a memory card.

Mobile translator is one of the main applications on every user's smartphone. On at the moment There are a large number of Android applications for translating phrases into various languages of the world. We have already looked at applications for online text translation, dictionaries and similar services. Mobile translators for Android OS also appear here, and we have selected the best of them:

Among the main functions we note offline work on the phone, and. It is also desirable that the mobile application has the ability to voice the translated text. At the end of the article, you can quickly choose the best translator for Android based on its functionality.

Mobile translator Google Translate for Android

Perhaps the most popular translator, whose name (Google Translate) has become a household name and is used when it comes to machine translation, let’s say, not very high quality. However, we must admit that today Google Translate is perhaps the optimal method automatic translation web pages, individual words, snippets of text and even audio messages via phone. From year to year, the quality of the Google Translate service is gradually increasing, and the Translate API is used by many other services and applications to translate text from English and other languages into Russian or as a translator of web pages on their own and other sites.

Google Translator for Android has been working without the Internet for some time now.

Main features of Google Translate for Android:

    • About 100 text translation directions are supported
    • Recognize text from a picture or Android camera and the ability to translate it into 26 different languages
    • Two-way translation of voice messages into 40 languages: text-to-speech and recognition of text spoken into the microphone
    • Support handwriting text input when drawing on android screen devices
    • Selectively download language extensions to Android as needed
    • Add words to your favorites and save translations for later offline use

However, keep in mind that all translation features are not available in all languages. Although English and Russian languages are fully supported on the phone.

Let’s talk about the features that we liked right away.

    1. Offline translation supported. If you're offline and trying to translate a word that's not in the dictionary, Google Translate will offer to download language packs. They weigh a little - the Russian-language one is about 20 MB.
    2. Alternative input text - this is handwriting, and voice, and text recognition from pictures.
    3. Great interface. IN lately Google pays more attention to usability, which improves convenience.

A few words about how it works Google app Translate. Select the direction of translation, enter a word or phrase using any of the input methods and see the translation. You can listen to the pronunciation, transcription, copy the word or add it to your favorites list. Well, of course, there is a dictionary where you can find out the translation options for a word and part of speech.

Resume. The Google Translate translator for Android is not exactly mega-functional, but it confidently combines the most necessary tools for users in need. It is both a dictionary and a machine translation application. The Google translator is convenient for quickly recognizing words in all languages that are included in the kit.

Yandex.Translate - offline translator for Android

Yandex.Translator is essentially the same as Google Translate, but for those who are used to using products from a “domestic manufacturer”. In fact, there are not many differences with the same free “Translate”. Recently, the Yandex.Translate service has increased its translator functionality, and now the Android application translates text from a picture and recognizes speech and audio messages. Perhaps the main difference compared to the Android version of Google Translate is the quality of translation (it’s just different) and the number of supported languages for mobile translation - there are not 90, but more than 60, which is enough for most users. There is also a mobile web version of the application at https://translate.yandex.com/m/translate.

Interface and settings of the Yandex Translator application

Some differences in the mobile application are purely “taste”. The signature yellow color predominates in the translator's design. Abbreviations and word completion also work in Yandex.Translate. One of convenient functions text translation programs – automatic change language when typing. Google Translate (version for Android) surprisingly does not have this, although the web version of the translator has been doing this for a very long time.

The Yandex translator works offline. But here’s the problem: electronic dictionaries take up a lot of space in your phone’s memory. The English-Russian package for offline translation alone takes up about 660 (!) MB! You need to think 100 times whether you need such happiness.

Other mobile translation settings available in the offline translator from Yandex:

    • simultaneous translation,
    • language definition,
    • hints and simplified input,
    • translation of words and text from clipboard,
    • activation of offline mode.

Resume. In general, the Yandex product is a suitable translator. With its own features and amenities, with a full set of translation functions. It works autonomously and can be used as a convenient electronic dictionary. The only drawback of the application is the impressive size of the dictionaries (they need to be downloaded in advance without fear of traffic consumption).

    Mobile text translator Translate.ru

The PROMT company is known for its long-standing developments in the field of machine translation. The Translate Ru translator is one of the interesting products available for Android. As Promtovites say, Translate provides fast and high-quality translation of texts in popular directions, including English, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, etc. Naturally, the Russian language can also serve as a translation direction.

High-quality mobile translation at Translate.ru (PROMT)

Some main features of the Translate.ru mobile application:

    • Integrated translation: the ability to translate from any open application in Android OS. You can easily copy the text and find out its translation in Translate.ru
    • Mobile translation, electronic dictionary and phrasebook in one set
    • Selecting a translation topic: studies, biography, social media, computers, travel and others.

After testing other popular text translators for Android, some points catch my eye. Firstly, the interface is not as modern as in Google Translate or Yandex.Translator. It's also less convenient when translating text on a phone with a small screen. To translate, you not only need to enter a word, but also press the enter button, since the text is not translated on the fly. On the other hand, the translator can independently change the subject of translation and the language direction.

A few words about the offline mode of operation of the dictionary. Offline work is available in the paid version of the Translate.ru translator, but some tools (phrase book) can be used for free - just download the corresponding dictionary of expressions. The last 50 words translated online are also available in the story without an internet connection.

Since the price of the program is low - about $3 - we advise you to think about purchasing it if you liked the free version of the application for its capabilities in translating from English into Russian or in other areas. In the paid version, in addition to the availability of offline mode, there are no advertisements at the bottom of the window.

Resume. This text translator for Android OS is not perfect, but nevertheless one of the best representatives of its category. Translate.ru offers a high-quality translation with the ability to consolidate and learn new words. Various translation topics, pronunciation and transcription of text and a phrase book are available. Well, in addition, all this can work offline. So Translate.ru has every chance to gain a foothold in your list of Android applications.

Good to know. What is the difference between a translator program and an electronic dictionary?

Electronic dictionaries are usually convenient for translating individual words. They are used as references and provide more translation options for a term. One of the most popular dictionaries is . The product is available for desktop and mobile platforms, including Android.

Babylon: electronic dictionary and translator in one bottle

At one time, Babilon was a fairly popular translator for the desktop platform. The developers decided to take revenge by porting their translator to Android and other mobile platforms.

Mobile translation using Babylon online translator

What can be said from the user's point of view? The Babylon app is relatively inconvenient for online text translation. Why don't developers just learn from other translate apps and make the GUI shell more user-friendly? Now Babylon is divided into 2 tabs: text translation and electronic dictionary. The logic is clear, but inconvenient. In addition, to translate text you need to press extra buttons. And considering that the translation of each word is downloaded from the Internet, using this Android translator is not much fun.

Again, comparing Babylon with the other translators mentioned, it does not have such necessary tools as translating text from a picture, speech recognition and translation, it does not even have a simple phrasebook.

Of course, it is possible to upgrade the basic version of Babylon, which is installed on Android by default, but this does not really save the situation, apparently. A total of 4 versions of the application are available:

    • Basic I - no ads
    • Basic II - no ads and with offline dictionaries
    • Deluxe - all of the above plus an unlimited number of text translations
    • Ultimate - everything that can be included in the translator, the possibility of subsequent updates

Okay, so what are the advantages then? mobile version"Babylon"? Despite the outdated shell, it is worth noting the good quality of translation of terms; electronic dictionaries did not disappoint in this regard. The program displays an entire dictionary entry when translating from English into Russian and vice versa. Transcription and pronunciation of a word can be found by clicking on the corresponding icon.

Thus, the Babylon electronic translator is unlikely to satisfy the needs of an active user who often accesses the dictionary. Unfortunately, Babylon has many inconveniences and a small set of functions for translation in various language areas. The only positive point is high-quality electronic dictionaries and detailed dictionary entries that the program produces when translating individual terms. If you need offline translation, we recommend turning to free applications such as Google Translate.

iTranslate - text translation software and voice translator

iTranslate is another one bright representative mobile translators. It is distributed mainly through the App Store in the form of an iOS version of the application. In addition, the iTranslate translator is also popular in circles mobile users Android OS.

iTranslate supports text translation format and voice input. Translation is carried out in 92 language areas. The program saves the history of the last translated phrases and works offline without any restrictions (you must first download a dictionary for the desired direction - for example, English-Russian).

Besides regular translation“iTranslate translator” can reproduce everything written on the phone. The application is absolutely free for Android users, but it broadcasts unobtrusive banners with advertising in the bottom panel of the screen.

    Other features of iTranslate translator:

    • More than 90 directions for text translation
    • Voiceover of translated text. You can choose the voice acting at your discretion (male/female)
    • Ability to select different regions for the selected translation language
    • Built-in dictionary, synonym database and extended articles for each word
    • Transliteration and access to previously entered phrases and words are supported
    • Sending translations to other users and posting on social networks

Another representative of mobile translators for Android, which is also distributed through the App Store in the form of an iOS version of the application. For this reason, “iTranslate translator” is quite popular among Android mobile users. This program allows you to work both in text translation format and using a voice translator in 92 languages, and also saves the history of the last translated phrases.

    Translator iTranslate for Android

In addition to the usual translation, iTranslate translator can reproduce everything written on the phone. This application is absolutely free for Android users, so it has unobtrusive banners with advertising in the bottom panel of the screen. To work with the iTranslate translator, you will need an Internet connection. You can also download an add-on from the same developer, a full-featured voice translator for Android – iTranslate Voice.

Microsoft Translator - a convenient translator for text and photos

The Microsoft Translator application can translate text in more than fifty different language directions. In addition, the application performs voice translation, recognizes phrases photographed on the phone, as well as screenshots taken on the phone. The translator works both online and offline; in the second case, you need to download dictionary databases for the translation to work without an Internet connection. The "Offline languages" section in the Android translator settings is intended for this.

When translating text, a transcription is displayed (for the Russian-English direction); voiceover of the text is also available by clicking on the corresponding icon. However, it was inconvenient that Microsoft Translator does not offer alternative translations of individual words, as is done in Google Translator. Also, the application does not display hints when entering words.

The function of translating inscriptions and images is quite convenient. As mentioned, all you have to do is take a photo with your camera and Microsoft Translator will recognize the text content. However, if there is really a lot of text to be translated, inconvenience may arise because you have to read the translation without formatting.

Another convenient feature is a phrasebook. It contains popular language phrases that you can use when traveling.

Offline dictionaries: a translator for Android that works without the Internet

The Offline dictionaries application allows you to use dictionaries on your phone without connecting to the network. This is convenient, for example, if you are on a plane, traveling abroad, working where there is no Internet, or just want to save battery.

Download the dictionaries you'll need for translation to your SD card the first time you launch the app. Then search using patterns.

Definitions can also be read by a smartphone using a text-to-speech module (some mobile devices do not support this module - accordingly, some languages may not be available. The dictionary is convenient to use in conjunction with e-book reading devices.

There are over 50 multilingual offline dictionaries to choose from, including English, French, German, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Hebrew, Russian, Italian, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch, Czech. In addition to dictionaries, the kit includes databases of synonyms and anagrams.

Dictionaries are added and regularly updated with the release of new versions of Offline dictionaries.

Other functions of the telephone translator:

    • self-replenishment of dictionaries
    • adding personal notes
    • synchronize notes with all devices via account Google

The free version of Offline dictionaries displays ads, but you can try the pro version, which is ad-free.

All of the above presented dictionaries and translators for smartphones on Android have advantages and disadvantages and are suitable for different cases. Having a constant connection to the Internet and requiring a large package of languages from the program (especially if we are talking not only about the Russian-English direction), you will most likely decide in favor of Google translators or iTranslate. In addition, Google Translate will be convenient to use as a web page translator.

If you want to work closely with a small list of the most popular foreign languages, you should pay attention to the android translator Translate ru or the Yandex translator.

If Internet access is limited, download “Offline Dictionaries” and you will be able to translate foreign words in any convenient place directly on your mobile device.

Translation apps are in high demand on Google Play due to significant progress in this field over the past 10 years. Previously, such programs were more common on desktop OSes; they took up a lot of space and worked without a network connection. What has changed since then? First of all, the performance of mobile devices and the speed of Internet access have increased; now you can translate large text even using a browser without installing additional software. The programs themselves have also changed - they have become more compact and functional.
The quality of translation has increased significantly since the principles of approach to machine translation began to change. Previously, the traditional algorithm was based on complete correspondence of values in the dictionary. In the old days, the same PROMT sometimes translated entire sentences with a set of unrelated words. Now developers are collecting and indexing a large number of texts, the analysis of which makes it possible to provide best quality translation.
In recent years, not only the weight of the applications themselves, but also offline language packs. Previously, it could exceed 1 gigabyte, although now in the same Google Translate, on average there are several tens of megabytes per language. The changes also affected the functionality - now many translators support voice input, voice acting and recognize text from photographs. Quantity available languages has increased significantly. Nowadays, even the least productive smartphone is in no way inferior in translation quality to a personal computer, and in many ways even outperforms. Google Translate will produce the same result on all devices, but mobile device always at hand, it is more convenient to use voice input and take pictures for photo transfer.
It is worth noting that not every program provides a separate service. Some applications use other people's services, that is, they simply transmit text to Google, receive the translation and display it to the user. Some developers have made significant progress in this direction - they create separate applications for each direction (Russian-English, English-Russian, etc.) and sell them on Google Play. It is not difficult to identify such programs; to do this, it is enough to compare the translation result in the program and through Google Translator or other full-fledged services. In this review, we will conduct a kind of experiment - we will use the same text in different applications to evaluate the quality of the translation.
For a comparative review, the 10 most popular applications from Google Play. The top ten did not include educational programs like Duolingo and dictionaries, since this is a different segment. Each translation application was rated on a 5-point scale for convenience and functionality, taking into account support for voice input, offline work and photo translation.

    Google Translate

Google Translator is the absolute leader in its segment on Android. He has more downloads and ratings than all other translators combined. It's no secret that Google is actively promoting native applications on your mobile OS. Google Translator was no exception, but its popularity still depends on other factors - the convenience of the mobile application, the range of functions, the number of supported languages, etc. In all respects, it is almost flawless and leaves its competitors far behind.
From a visual point of view there is nothing to complain about. Some users will miss custom skins, but for this type of application this does not matter. The main screen has a standard set - a text field, a choice of languages, as well as icons for taking pictures, voice and handwriting input.

There are no questions about the functionality of Google Translator; the program supports offline translation, voice acting, and text recognition. There is also a phrasebook, and translations can be shared in other applications. The developers have provided close integration with operating system, which allows you to quickly translate text from other programs by simply copying it to the clipboard.
Google Translate supports 103 languages, but only half of them are available offline as downloadable packages. Photo translation is available on 37 of them, handwriting is available on 93. These indicators are constantly changing, as developers increase the number of languages every year.
Google Translate supports quick camera translation, which is very convenient for recognizing unfamiliar text when traveling. Integration with the camera is implemented at a high level; the program accurately identifies the text captured with its help.

In the application settings, you can change your preferred languages, voice input parameters, enable quick translation and display of profanity, etc. The set of languages available for offline translation is specified in a separate menu. There is no paid content in the program; everything can be downloaded for free. The average weight of one language pack is 30 megabytes.
Google Translator can be considered not just a leader in its segment, but a full-fledged trend setter among translators on all platforms. This service has very few worthy competitors, but even they lag behind in all respects. Mobile application Google Translate gets 5 out of 5.

iTranslate ranks second in popularity among translators on Android, significantly inferior to the Google application. However, iTranslate provides almost the same set of functions as its more famous competitor, and is only slightly behind in the number of supported languages - 92 versus 103 for Google Translate.
The iTranslate interface is quite convenient, but at the same time devoid of any frills. The arrangement of elements is familiar for this segment - an input field with a choice of languages, a result and various icons - settings, history, voice input, etc. The appearance is very reminiscent of Google translator, the same white and blue color combination is used without the ability to change the design in settings.

iTranslate can be considered a good multi-platform translator, but there are more advanced applications on Android. Many users will miss offline translation or text recognition from photos. There is also paid content here, and although the Premium version is not very expensive, it is much easier to put a winner on all Google settings Translator and get a more advanced set of functions completely free of charge. iTranslate received a score of 4 out of 5.

The translator from Recomendado closes the top three in popularity in its segment. It is quite compact and convenient, although it is not without some drawbacks, but first things first.
The appearance of Recomendado is not much different from other translators, except that the large size of the control elements is striking. Otherwise, everything is standard - the input field, language selection and toolbar. The design scheme in the settings does not change.

Despite the lack of some features, Recomendado's main drawback is advertising. It will not be disabled at any cost; apparently the developers themselves understand perfectly well that no one will pay for their program. But the surprises don’t end there - other applications are actively promoted here, and in addition to the standard banner at the bottom of the screen there is a full-screen advertisement that periodically opens immediately after the translation, i.e. you must first close it, and then you can see the result, which is extremely inconvenient.
What do we get as a result? The translator from Recomendado turned out to be a rather mediocre application that can hardly fully compete with the leaders of its segment. For annoying advertising and limited functionality, the program receives only 3.5 points out of a possible 5.

    Translate Voice

Translate Voice allows you to quickly translate large texts, with voice input available in all supported languages.
The application differs from its analogues in appearance - instead of full-fledged text fields, everything here goes to the line, both the source data and the translation. To view full text an additional press will be required each time. Managing places is not very convenient; you often have to close pop-ups and advertisements. It is unlikely that users from Russia are the target audience of Translate Voice, since the developers performed localization using machine translation, which applies to both the interface of the application itself and the description on Google Play. The only plus in terms of usability is the ability to change the text and colors.

From a functional point of view, there are certain issues with Translate Voice. First of all, there is no offline translation. To recognize text from a photo you need to download separate application, Translate Voice itself does not have these tools. Otherwise, everything is standard - support for 80 languages, translation history, voice output in 44 languages, spell checking, etc. Text and audio can be shared using third party software. The quality of the translation, judging by the test text, is identical to Google Translator - the result coincides entirely, that is, Translate Voice simply transfers the data to Google servers, rather than using its own services.

Advertising in Translate Voice deserves special mention. It is very intrusive, it constantly opens in full screen mode, and to turn it off you need to purchase paid version for 120 rubles.
Translate Voice scores 3 out of 5. This translator is inferior to most competitors in all respects. Not much in the app convenient control, and annoying advertising is introduced only so that someone will pay to turn it off.

    Translate.Ru (PROMT)

The translator Translate.ru, better known at one time as PROMT, was quite popular 10 years ago, when it worked on a PC exclusively offline. Since then, versions have been released for different platforms and a web version of the service appeared. In the 00s, PROMT often translated texts with a set of unrelated words, has anything changed since then? Let's try to figure it out.
The interface of Translate.ru on Android is not very different from other translators, the same text field, choice of languages and different icons - voice acting, photos, voice input. The design in the settings does not change.

The Translate.ru translator has many functions and in this regard is not much inferior to its competitor from Google, although the implementation of some of them leaves much to be desired. Photo translation and offline work are available here, as well as a choice of topics - business, technology, sports, etc. Depending on the selected category, the translation may differ slightly. Translate.ru works with data from other applications; just select the text in the browser or text editor. Translation of SMS messages is also supported. All standard means in place - voice input and output, history, etc. There is even a built-in phrasebook, although the number of languages is small, in the standard version there are about two dozen.
The quality of translation at Translate.ru leaves much to be desired. Compared to versions 10 years ago, significant progress is noticeable, but apparently PROMT has not yet abandoned the old algorithms entirely. In the mobile version of Translate.ru, the same passage of text was checked, the result can be found in the screenshots. The disadvantages of the application include advertising and the lack of offline translation in the free version. You can get rid of all this for 300 rubles, but is it worth it? This will not affect the quality of the translation at all, but it will be possible to work without an Internet connection.

Translate.ru is almost ahead of Google Translator in terms of its range of functions, however, these programs can hardly be considered competitors. Translate.ru is sorely lacking in quality in everything, but the developers have also limited free version, removing support for offline translation. The final score is 3.6 points out of 5.

    Yandex.Translator

Yandex.Translator is a full-fledged translation application with a wide range of functions. It is in many ways similar to Google Translate and is almost as good as it.
Visually, Yandex.Translator on Android looks similar to other Yandex applications. The usual combination of white, yellow and black colors is used here, which does not change in the settings. The controls are very convenient, there is nothing superfluous on the main screen - only text input and output, choice of languages and several icons.

Functionally, Yandex.Translator is almost identical to Google Translator, but there are some differences. For example, photo translation is only available in 12 languages, and there is no handwriting input. Otherwise, everything fits together - offline access, text translation from other applications, favorites, history. There is also voiceover and vocabulary. Translations can be shared through third-party applications.
Yandex.Translator, completely free, no advertising banners. Additional language packs are downloaded in settings. So far, Yandex is slightly behind Google in the number of languages - 80 versus 103, and there are only a little more than 10 offline directions and each of them weighs 300-600 megabytes, which is several times more than Google Translate. Also available Android support Wear, which allows you to transfer data to the watch screen.
There are no questions about the quality of the translation for Yandex.Translator; it uses its own service, which provides a very good result, an example can be seen in the screenshots.

Yandex.Translator is acceptable alternative to Google To the translator. Even though it lags behind in most areas, it doesn't lag as much as other apps. Yandex has cleverly borrowed its competitors' concepts and is definitely moving in the right direction, but the gap has yet to be closed. The final score is 4.6 points out of 5 possible.

    Recommended Translator

Recommended Translator is a simple translator for Android. Despite its compactness, it supports more languages.
Externally, Recommended Translator is no different from other translators. The design of the main menu is standard - input, output, choice of languages, toolbar. The controls are intuitive and easy to understand.
In terms of functionality, Recommended Translator lags behind its competitors; only basic facilities. The program can recognize voice, read text, store history, and share translations through other applications. About 50 languages are supported, but there is no offline work or photo translation here.

The translation quality in Recommended Translator is quite good, but where it comes from is not difficult to understand - the program uses the Microsoft Translator API. You can compare the results here and in the program from Microsoft; in the case of the same test, everything coincided 100%.
Recommended Translator is completely free, but it is not without annoying advertising. It appears everywhere - both in the form of banners and in full screen mode, which often interferes with work.

Recommended Translator does not stand out from its competitors in any way and is not of particular interest at all. A typical translator with a limited set of functions and annoying advertising. 3.5 points out of 5.

    Microsoft Translator

Microsoft Translator is an application with a huge range of translation tools and support for more than 60 languages.
Microsoft did not completely copy Google Translate, as they tried to do in Yandex, but went their own way. The differences are immediately apparent - after launch, the user finds himself in a menu consisting of several icons - voice and text input, phrasebook, history and camera. Usually home screen the translator looks different. Visually, Microsoft Translator looks at least no worse than its competitors, and the control scheme, although somewhat non-standard, is quite convenient.

Functionally, this application is not much inferior to its counterpart from Google. Microsoft Translator includes voice input and output, history, photo translation, downloading language packs for battery life(although they weigh on average 5-7 times more), as well as a dictionary and phrase book. Microsoft Translator supports Android Wear and allows you to share translations in other programs. The phrasebook here is quite advanced - the data is divided into categories, including nutrition, technology, travel and much more.
Some users will find real-time translation useful; Microsoft Translator has a special mode for this. First you need to select 2 languages, and then the screen is divided in half, with a separate field and a button for voice input appearing on each side. By clicking on it, recording begins, then the text is recognized and displayed on the display in both languages. Similar mode will help you find quickly common language with foreigners on travel or translate a short excerpt of a film or song.

The translation quality in Microsoft Translator is very high, in the case of a small test text that was tested in all applications from this review, he completely bypassed Google Translator. The program is completely free and does not contain advertising banners.
Microsoft Translator can be called one of the best translators for Android. This is the only application that can not only compete with Google Translate, but even surpass it in some ways. However, Microsoft still lags behind in most respects - for example, there is no handwriting input and supported languages are only a little over 60, when Google already passed the 100 mark. The final score for Microsoft Translator is 4.8 points out of 5.

    Language Translator

Language Translator is a simple translator for Android with support for a large number of languages.
Externally, Language Translator looks extremely primitive - there are not even settings or a main menu button, only input and output (both text and audio), a choice of languages and a small control panel.

The application's capabilities fully correspond to its appearance. Language Translator can work with text in more than 90 languages; audio input and voice acting are also available here. There is no photo translation, nor is there any offline translation; constant access to the Internet is required for work. Of course, there is no talk of any built-in dictionaries or phrase books.

The quality of translation in Language Translator is completely identical to Google Translator, which you can see for yourself by checking how the same text is processed. Given the low popularity of the application, it was logical to expect that it does not have its own service and simply sends data to Google servers, and then receives the translation and issues it to the user.
Language Translator receives only 3.5 points out of 5. Such a low rating is due to limited functionality and intrusive advertising, which cannot be disabled via in-app purchase.

    RU-ENG Translator GK Apps

Translator from GK Apps is the most primitive application among those included in this review. It supports only two translation directions - Russian-English and English-Russian.
The Translator from GK Apps does not stand out in appearance, but the developers clearly missed the mark with the size of the text - the letters are clearly too big, which is why few words fit on the screen.

Translator from GK Apps got into trouble comparative review at least so that users understand what 90% of translators on Google Play are and why they are not needed. For a blatant attempt to profit from someone else's work, the score is 2 points.

According to the results of the review, the top three included Google Translator, Yandex.Translator and Microsoft Translator. The rest of the applications are left far behind, especially since many of them simply transfer the text to one of the 3 leading services, download the translation and display it to the user as their own. Developers are most often silent about using third-party APIs.
Google Translate is significantly ahead of all competitors in terms of the number of ratings and downloads from Google Play. Yandex.Translator and Microsoft Translator are inferior to it primarily in popularity; in terms of convenience and range of functions, the difference is not so great. This is reflected in the final ratings - Google Translate received exactly 5 points, while its closest competitors received 4.8 and 4.6, respectively.

Of the rest, only iTranslate performed well, receiving 4 points out of 5. Translate.ru also had a chance, but despite having its own service, the translation quality turned out to be low, and the same can be said about Recomendado. The remaining programs do not deserve attention; they are very similar to each other and received from 3 to 3.5 points. The only one that stood out was the Translator from GK Apps (2 points out of 5), whose developers create separate applications for each direction of translation in order to make the most of the Microsoft Translator API.
If we evaluate additional functional features, then the undisputed leader here is Google Translate. It supports more than 100 languages, offline translation, photo translation, voice input and output, and is ad-free and paid content. Their counterparts from Yandex and Microsoft are slightly behind, although they adhere to the same concept. Other programs often have fewer functions and languages and many advertising banners. Voice input and dubbing are supported by all 10 applications, but offline translation and work with photos are supported by only 4 - Translate.ru joins the top three from Google, Microsoft and Yandex. You can see all the parameters in detail using the tables.

As you might expect, Google Translate beats everyone. For most users, there is little point in analyzing the article in detail; just download this application from our website and install it on your device. A worthy replacement for the program from Google would be analogues from Microsoft and Yandex. If you need to translate constantly, it is better to have several applications. Firstly, the main service may fail, and secondly, it’s a good idea to have alternative translation options so that you have plenty to choose from.

About five years ago, a good dictionary and translator for an iPhone cost a lot of money, and there were no good ones, and free ones at that. After the release of free translators for iPhone and iPad from Google and Yandex, the policies of other companies also changed and there are now a lot of them in the App Store.

Today we review the best, five free translators for iPhone and iPad, with which you can not only translate words and sentences, but also communicate without difficulty while abroad.

Lingvo dictionary + photo translator from English into Russian and 8 other languages

The powerful database of dictionaries in the ABBYY Lingvo application provides first-class and accurate translation online and offline. Basic set of 10 dictionaries is free, but if you need something more than an ordinary translator, you will have to pay. Among the advantages is a good search - by entering a word, not only the translation appears, but also variants of use in the bulk of phrases.

The translator also has a quick translation from the camera, but it works awkwardly, only for one word. To translate an entire sentence or page, developers sell a separate application that costs 379 rubles.

Another feature of the translator are cards - phrases or words that you want to learn can be added to a separate section.

Both corporations, Yandex and Google, are trying to promote their services in all directions. The Yandex.Translator application stands out for its simplicity and good functionality - there is translation without the Internet, a photo translator, and voice input. And, of course, it is absolutely free.

By own experience I can say with complete confidence that simultaneous translation works very well even with a poor Internet connection. Large texts from photos are translated 50/50, sometimes the application cannot recognize the text at all.

There is also a great feature with which you can quickly delete written text - you just need to swipe to the left and the input field will become empty.

The translator is interesting for certain functions that competitors do not have - a translator keyboard and a widget in the notification center. Otherwise, the translator is very simple and understandable; it can read entire sentences and store favorites in a separate section. For the majority of languages, there are voice translation settings - you can choose which voice will be read, female or male, as well as the reading speed.

iTranslate is free, but it has an ad at the bottom, however, you can turn it off by purchasing iTranslate Premium for 529 rubles, which also includes speech recognition and translations with large amounts of text.

It seems to me that the best and convenient translator for iPhone and iPad. Google has all the above functions absolutely free and all this in a pleasant and convenient interface. Translating text from photos works perfectly, failures are very rare. There is even quite tolerable handwriting input. I don’t understand who it was made for, but the fact that it exists is already a plus.

The translation history is conveniently made, which is located immediately below the input field - there is no need to search for recently translated words and sentences in different categories. But "has" Google Translate» big minus - it cannot work without an Internet connection.

    Microsoft Translator

The translator from Microsoft is still quite young, in the App Store app appeared last summer, but has already managed to win over some users. The developers have focused on simultaneous translation, which makes it possible to communicate with people without knowing their language.

You just need to open the translator on your iPhone and Apple watch Watch, activate the instant translation function and give the iPhone to your interlocutor - the application shows the translation simultaneously on the iPhone and watch. True, it doesn’t function very accurately now, and there aren’t many languages, although there is Russian, which is good.

They didn’t forget to add the necessary functions to the application, such as translation from photographs - it was done well and conveniently. The translator is absolutely free, but you don’t need to expect anything unusual from it yet; the application has many minor errors and shortcomings.
