Section 1. iPad Features and Specifications.

iPad - This Internet tablet produced by the Apple organization.

    iPad: 1 GHz Apple A4

iPad 2: 1 GHz dual core Apple A5

iPad 3: 1 GHz dual core Apple A5X

iPad 4: 1.4 GHz dual core Apple A6X

    iPad mini: 1GHz dual-core Apple A5.

    iPad Features and Specifications

The first version of the tablet was presented at a presentation by Steve Jobs on January 27, 2010. Sales started in New York on Fifth Avenue on April 3, 2010.

IN Russian Federation official sales devices began on November 9, 2010. On March 2, 2011, the second generation model, iPad 2, with improved characteristics, was presented to the public. On March 7, 2012, the third generation model called “The New iPad” was presented to the public. New model appeared in sale in the USA on March 16, 2012, on March 23 it was released in ten more countries. On the night of May 24-25, 2012 Russian Federation Official sales of the new iPad 3 have begun. October 23, 2012 organization Apple introduced the Apple iPad 4 (with Retina display), and Apple iPad mini. iPad 4 has the most to date fast processor from organizations Apple - Apple A6X (1.4 GHz dual core).

The Apple iPad is a classic example of Internet tablets and is fundamentally different from personal computers. Many analysts attribute Internet tablets to devices of the post-computer era, which are simpler and more understandable than conventional personal computers and over time can displace PCs from the IT market.

The iPad is a beautiful tablet that weighs 680 grams and is packaged in an aluminum and glass body. All user interaction with the device is carried out through a touch screen with multi-touch support. Text entry also occurs using the on-screen keyboard, although the list of separately purchased accessories includes a hardware keyboard attached to the bottom.

Apple iPad: what is it and what can it be useful for?

The “hardware” part of the device looks decent: Apple’s own gigahertz processor should have good performance, and the battery should also last 10 hours of active use (or a month in standby mode). Apple can only be praised for its 9.7-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1024x768 pixels. The iPad can communicate with the outside world using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 or 3G module. Versions with 3G and GPS cost $130 more, and instead of regular SIM cards they use some completely incomprehensible micro SIM - does anyone even know what this is? The 3G module in iPad can only be used for data transfer, but not for calls and SMS. But from the point of view regular user The iPad is, by and large, an iPod touch enlarged several times, which is emphasized by the absence of any interfaces except for the dock connector.

    iPad (iPad) is

Many hoped that the device would run a full-fledged Mac OS X, adapted for touch screens. This didn't happen. The iPad runs iPhone OS 3.2 with all the ensuing consequences. Consequence number one (probably the most unpleasant) is that the device cannot run applications for Mac OS X and does not support multitasking mode. Consequence number two - synchronization with a computer occurs only through iTunes. However, iPhone owners I'm not used to this. Consequence number three is the lack of Flash support in the browser. This decision has both positive and negative sides. The positive is the absence of the need to stick into stupid advertising, the negative is a significant limitation of the interactivity of the web, in which Flash is currently the de facto standard.

Of course, all the bundled iPhone OS applications (maps, YouTube, etc.) are still there. The device can run and existing applications for iPhone, available in the App Store.

How is iPad different from iPhone or iPod touch?

In addition to the obvious differences (size, performance), there are several more non-obvious, but very important. Firstly, a special version of iWork, an excellent office suite, will be released for it. In this regard, iPad can be used for work with text documents, tables and presentations.

    iPad (iPad) is

Secondly, the programs preinstalled on the iPad work with email and calendar look much better than their iPhone counterparts. Of course, working with MS Exchange is supported.

Thirdly, watching videos (HD 720p supported) on a screen with such a diagonal and resolution is a dream. Unfortunately, the device only supports iTunes-compatible formats (read: MPEG-4 ASP and MPEG-4 AVC in M4V and QuickTime containers). Fourthly, the 1024x768 resolution and WebKit-based browser ensure that the quality of browsing web pages on the iPad will not be inferior to full-fledged platforms. It is impossible not to mention iBooks - a reading application e-books, which will be sold through the iTunes store. In our country, of course, they will not be available.

    iPad (iPad) is

Numerous accessories will be available for sale with the device. The most interesting among them are the keyboard dock already mentioned above and adapters that allow you to import photos from your camera to the device. There are two such adapters, one of them is designed to connect the camera directly to the iPad (via a USB port), the second is for plugging SD cards into the device. There are currently no photo apps for the iPad; they can only be viewed. But I'm sure that eventually Adobe (or someone else) will release something like Photoshop Lite.

To sum it up, we can say with confidence that the iPad, like its brothers (iPod and iPhone), are focused not on content production, but on its consumption. However, this is normal, since 99% of the world's population is engaged in consuming the fruits of other people's intellectual labor. Despite this, a typical “office worker” may well find the iPad useful, since the device covers all his basic tasks: you can write a memo, draw up a small estimate, send it all by email, and then go to chips with a sense of accomplishment.net and enjoy fresh bojani. If you need something more complex and sophisticated, it is better to pay attention to netbooks or CULV laptops, which at a lower price have significantly greater functionality, although they are larger in size and weight. P.S. An extremely unfortunate name was chosen for the new product: firstly, it is in tune with the iPod, and secondly, iPad can be translated into Russian as “ya pad”, since one of the main meanings of the word “pad” is exactly that.

IN USA Sales of the iPad tablet with Wi-Fi began on April 3, 2010. Sales of iPads with Wi-Fi and 3G started later - the models appeared on shelves on April 30, 2010 (at USA).

International sales of the iPad (in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK) began on May 28, 2010. It also said it plans to begin selling the tablet computer in Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore in July.

    iPad (iPad) is

iPad Wi-Fi+3G models have a GPS receiver module that can work both in standalone mode and in A-GPS mode. In addition, instead of a regular SIM card, a Micro-SIM card is used.

Adapted specifically for iPad office suite iWork and opened a new section in the iTunes Store, accessible through system application App Store.

    iPad features

    Web surfing:

How we get: Standard browser Safari will satisfy the majority of device users. If in the first versions of iOS Safari caused many complaints, then starting with iOS 5 an improved version of the browser appeared, which raises virtually no questions. Browser features: tabs, bookmarks, reading list, special mode for comfortable reading. If you need a more functional (gestures, file uploading, etc.) browser, then look at the alternatives. Our site has reviews of several high-quality browsers for iPad.

    Cons: no file downloading.

Implementation rating: 10 out of 10.

    Mail client:

How we get it: I don’t even want to change the standard email client (to be fair, let’s say there are no worthy alternatives in the App Store). It’s convenient to manage—it’s possible to track multiple email accounts.

Cons: there is no way to set a password on the email client itself.

Implementation rating: 9 out of 10.

GPS navigation (only for iPad with 3G/4G)

How we get it: the GPS module is only built into the iPad version with 3G/4G, which somewhat devalues the iPad with Wi-Fi. In order to fully use GPS (for example, for navigation in a car), it is better to purchase a navigation program from the App Store. If you have constant access to mobile internet, in principle, it is enough free analogues like Yandex Navigator.

Cons: high price for high-quality navigation programs in the App Store. On average 25-40 dollars.

Implementation rating: 10 out of 10.

    Music player:

How we get it: after the purchase we already have a good built-in player - the standard Music program. You can listen even with the screen turned off, which can significantly save battery power. Through the standard program we listen to: podcasts, audiobooks, music in mp3, alac (Apple lossless) formats.

    Cons: strictly tied to iTunes

Implementation rating: 9 out of 10.

    Video player:

How we get it: we can watch it using a standard video viewer, but, frankly speaking, it is bad due to the small number of playable formats (mp4, m4v). Therefore, a good alternative video player is almost the first thing you need to install on your iPad from the App Store. Check out AVPlayer, GoodPlayer or OPlayer. It is possible to watch videos on local network without copying the video to your computer (example: StreamToMe program or the same GoodPlayer). You can also watch the video online (example: ivi.ru). And buy movies in the App Store (example: Aikino or Masha and the Bear).

    iPad (iPad) is

Cons: more formats played by default.

Implementation rating: 6 out of 10. With the help of the App Store and additional programs, we will immediately get 10 out of 10.

Internet 3G/4G (only for iPad with 3G/4G)

How we get it: 3G Internet is a fast way to access the Internet from anywhere covered by 3G networks. Relevant for cities where a 3G network is already taken for granted. The new iPad now supports 4G networks. The situation with 4G now is about the same as it was at the dawn of 3G - that is, low prevalence.

Cons: relatively low prevalence of 4G.

Implementation rating: 10 out of 10.

    Additional iPad features:

    Reading e-books:

How we get it: Install one or more readers, load books into the iPad. The choice of readers, although not wide, will cover all user tastes. One free iBooks from Apple is worth it. Reading books on iPad is very convenient. With the high-quality Retina screen in the New iPad, reading has turned into a fairy tale.

Cons: there is no ideal reader program (even iBooks is limited, for example, by the number of supported file formats)

Implementation rating: 10 out of 10 (and with almost any reader).

    iPad (iPad) is

    Dictaphone:

How we get it: install programs - there are both free and paid (for example, Voice Recorder HD). The recorded sound is good - there is almost no interference. Also, many creators of programs for business and idleness began to introduce support for the voice recorder function: programs for notes, interactive books for children, file managers, etc.

What's missing from the feature: There's no voice recorder built into iOS, despite its obvious necessity.

Implementation rating: 9 out of 10.

How we get it: There is an electronic store called the App Store with a huge selection of games. There are both free ones and those for which you need to pay. 95 percent of good games are paid, which is why many device owners decide to jailbreak and install hacked applications that are not difficult to find on the Internet. We carefully select best games on iPad, the site also has a catalog of the best free iPad games. However, even in Russian Federation people are slowly becoming accustomed to the idea that you have to pay for everything and Russian App Store is gaining momentum every year. This is evidenced by the increasing number of Russian localizations even in the most hit games. The App Store often has games on sale and you can download masterpieces for 1-2 dollar or even free.

Cons: the best games are paid.

Implementation rating: 10 out of 10.

    Various useful applications:

How we get it: just like games - we download it from the App Store. There are a lot of useful applications, you need to look for good ones. You can see this in my iPad calculator test. We have collected our selection of the best applications and are constantly updating them in this article. But standard applications and applications from the App Store have a special mission - they are the ones who make the iPad a very functional device: I don’t even dare to list all these functions in this article, here we are looking at the issue of “iPad functions” in general.

Cons: As with games, best apps- paid. There are far fewer promotions and discounts on apps than on games.

Implementation rating: 9 out of 10.

2 photo cameras with video recording capabilities:

How we get it: users received 2 cameras on both sides of the iPad only in the iPad 2 version. In the first version there are no cameras, despite the point above the screen, which misleads many. Only in 2012, with the release of the new iPad, this function can be considered successfully implemented. You can evaluate the quality of pictures and videos in a separate review: Photo and video cameras in the new iPad.

Cons: on the second iPad, photos are of terrible quality

Implementation rating: 5 out of 10 (iPad 2), 10 out of 10 (New iPad)

    Viewing and editing photos:

How we get it: Viewing pictures is available through the standard Photo application. Many people get tremendous pleasure from watching it: it’s convenient and practical. There are simply a huge number of photo editing programs in the App Store - I recommend paying attention to the Apple iPhoto application: for most, this application will be enough for most people. In general, it seems that only a lazy developer has not released applications for editing photographs in one form or another. Here's an example: the MySketch application, which allows you to make a pencil sketch from a photograph.

Cons: the variety of programs in this case can be a disadvantage, since it is difficult for the average user to understand their need and usefulness.

Implementation rating: 9 out of 10

Of course, these are not all the functions of the iPad. We can talk about them for a long time, for some the iPad will become an assistant in raising a child (there are already quite a few reviews of high-quality educational applications for children on our website), for others it will replace a paper newspaper (you can subscribe to electronic versions of the press), and for others will find it an excellent gaming platform.

    iPad operating functions.

Millions of people around the world already own an Apple iPad. In Ukraine, their number is also growing rapidly. And although iOS allows you to use this device to perform the most different tasks, but still in practice the main iPad functions in Ukraine they have become status and entertainment. And if with the first everything is clear by definition, then a few words are worth saying about the second. The device is clearly aimed at taking up free time on the go. However, not many programs and applications for this are installed by default. An email client, a text editor and a contact list, to put it mildly, are an insignificant set to get started. The only thing that saves you is the free applications in the AppStore, plus the ability to surf the Internet if available. To work on an iPad you need to get special applications. Let's talk about them in more detail.

    iWork app for iPad

It would be more accurate to say that iWork is not an application, but a set of them, which consists of Pages - an analogue of Word, Numbers - an analogue of Exel and Keynote - an analogue of PowerPoint. Actually applications from Microsoft and Apple compatible, this means that with a document in doc format. you can work in pages. The iWork software package is not mutually integrated and this is its main drawback. This means that in order to copy text from Pages to Keynote, you need to make a lot of different movements to open and close two applications.

Pages An excellent document editor with extensive capabilities. There are a lot of options for editing. Let's just talk about the main ones: setting the width of the edges, indentation, font, inserting pictures, there are also 16 document templates. Very compact, but at the same time there is nothing superfluous - an ideal set for mobile work. As in all major applications, the image in Pages rotates when you rotate the device itself. The application has no obvious disadvantages; it works quickly and copes with all complex documents.

Numbers Designed for numbers, the app has many functions that are available in 5 tabs. You can create graphs from tables; there are nine types of them. Like Pages, there are templates for work. Keynote An application designed for creating simple and editing complex presentations. Like Pages and Numbers, Keynote comes with 12 standard themes.

Keynote supports complex graphics and text animation.

Today, all three work applications are available in the AppStore at price$9.99 each. Thus, a complete set for office work will cost 29.97. But there is an alternative to such a waste of money - this is the purchase of the Office HD application, which combines the functions of Pages and Numbers, but does not work with presentations and does not create charts from tables. The third alternative is very popular in Ukraine - hacking the device and installing pirated software on it for free.

Every built-in iPad app is designed to take full advantage of its unique capabilities. big screen Multi-Touch and modern iPad technologies. Applications work in any screen orientation. The iPad can do things that no other device can do.

The iPad is the best device for browsing the Internet. You can view entire pages on the large Multi-Touch display in both landscape and portrait orientations. And gestures are used for navigation.

The Mail app on iPad is amazing. A single inbox, split-screen functionality, and a wide-screen keyboard give you a unique email experience.

The bright IPS display with LED backlight makes viewing photos on iPad truly unforgettable. Albums open with a touch. You can scroll through the photos one by one or play a slideshow for your friends.

iPad display high resolution With a 9.7-inch diagonal, it's perfect for watching movies, podcasts, and more.

The YouTube app, designed specifically for iPad, makes it even easier to search for videos. And on the excellent screen of the iPad they are even more pleasant to watch. Especially in HD.

Favorite songs are nearby. Expand the album cover to full screen. On iPad, music looks as good as it sounds.

IN App store Store you will find more than 350,000 applications. Almost all of them are supported by iPad - from games to office applications.

Maps on iPad puts the whole world in the palm of your hand. Street View mode, satellite photos and new mode Landscape will help you find any address using services.

The large display and on-screen keyboard make iPad an excellent device for taking notes and storing useful information. You can even send yourself a reminder via email.

Home, work and any other calendars are always at hand. iPad makes it easy to read and correct any schedule—even when you're juggling everything at once.

The Contacts app on iPad is more than just a list of names and phone numbers. It has many amazing and useful features. More details

    Audio/video cables (combo and component).

iPad Pen - for taking notes in applications that use handwriting.

Everything that happens on the device screen is displayed on the monitor/TV screen (unlike a VGA adapter, which only displays YouTube videos, videos, photographs, presentations in Keynote). The cable also has a 30-pin connector for charging the iPad.

In the very first days after the release of the iPad, some media and Internet forums began to criticize the name “iPad”, noting its similarity with the word “Pad”, common name sanitary pads. Wired News reported that this could make some women less willing to buy the product. Soon after the start of sales was announced, the hashtag “iTampon” became the second most discussed topic on the social network Twitter. It is worth noting that the Lenovo ThinkPad/IdeaPad line of computers did not cause a similar public outcry.

According to Steve Jobs, about 300 thousand iPads were sold on the first day, 250 thousand books were downloaded and about 1 million applications. The significant milestone of 1 million iPad computers sold was achieved, according to the head of the company, in 28 days - more than twice as short as the corresponding one for the iPhone (74 days).

    iPad (iPad) is

According to an analysis conducted by experts from the iSuppli organization, the net cost of producing iPad WiFi models of various configurations, including components and assembly of the device, ranges from $259.60 to $348.10 (from the minimum to the maximum configuration, respectively). This is more than previously estimated according to preliminary estimates. The most expensive components of the device are the display (25.9% of the net cost) and the touchscreen (12% of the net cost).

On April 14, 2010, a message was published on the Apple website: “Faced with unexpectedly high demand in the United States, we are forced to make a difficult decision: the start of iPad sales outside the United States is postponed by a month - until the end of May. We will announce iPad prices for different countries, and will also begin accepting pre-orders outside the US on May 10th. We recognize that our international customers who are waiting to purchase an iPad will be upset by this news, but we hope that they will be somewhat reassured by the reason for the delay - the unprecedented success of the iPad in the United States."

Apple has released so many devices that many are starting to get confused. Most often, people do not know the difference between an iPad and an iPod.

In principle, it is not surprising, because only one letter changes, but in essence, the devices are completely different and we will talk about them in detail today.

    What are iPads and iPods?

iPad is a tablet that was developed by Apple and it is produced and updated to this day. On at the moment, the best on the tablet market.

The first device was released in 2010 and the company managed to quickly win the hearts of customers. Build quality and speed of operation were the main advantages.

iPod is a series of multimedia devices whose main task is simply to reproduce high-quality music. Although some have the opportunity to play games, watch movies, etc.

The very first iPod appeared in 2001 and its main purpose was to play music. The sound quality was very high, so the market was conquered very quickly.

This is, if we talk about these two gadgets very, very briefly. But let's compare them a little and find out the main differences to make the overall picture clearer.

    Difference between iPod and iPad

I think you already understand that the iPad and iPod are completely different devices. But for the sake of interest, you can compare the general facts about them a little. It will be very interesting.

Appearance. All the devices are very beautiful and usually the colors changed with the advent of new colors in the series of gadgets.

The sizes differ very radically, because the smallest iPod shuffle can fit in your hand and you can even close it, which cannot be said about huge tablets.

By purchasing any of the devices, you can get maximum pleasure from use. After all, Apple always does everything gracefully and to a minimum.

Screens. This is quite interesting, because there are iPods that don’t even have a screen, but the most maximum size is 4 inches and has his latest generation iPod touch.

All iPad models You simply must have screens, because this is a completely different type of device. The minimum size is 7.9 and the maximum is 12.9 inches.

All displays have evolved as technology has advanced and are usually some of the coolest screens on the market. So to speak, at the top of the list.

Updateability and relevance. With the advent of such a device as the iPhone, everything began to change dramatically on the gadget market.

Everyone realized that it is much easier to buy one device and perform absolutely all tasks on it. Thanks to the large screen size, you can watch movies and read books, and music is played simply at its best.

The iPod has already begun to sag a long time ago and is bought only when necessary: for training or for those who like to have a player and a phone separately. Updated very rarely.

With the iPad the situation is a little better and it is updated quite often, probably every model about a year. But nevertheless, the popularity is also not very top-notch.

People most often buy a tablet for home use. And then, in fact, you can do without it when you have an iPhone 6S PLUS or iPhone 7 PLUS.

    Conclusions

Now you know the main differences between iPad and iPod in general. I did not compare their characteristics, because the categories of devices differ very much.

All gadgets are very cool, but before you buy, you should decide on the most important question: “Do you need it?” So that it doesn’t turn out that you just threw money away.

    We study Apple's cheapest tablet

Unexpectedly for everyone, Apple released a new iPad - without loud presentations or other fanfare. True, it can be a stretch to call it new: there are no technical innovations here, and most of the characteristics correspond to the iPad and Previous iPhones generations. Therefore, perhaps the most interesting feature of the model is its price. In the Russian Apple online store, the new iPad is sold for 25 thousand rubles for the minimum configuration. For comparison, the younger version iPad Pro with a 9.7-inch display costs 45 thousand rubles. So is it worth overpaying 20 thousand? We decided to figure it out.

It's no secret that the tablet market has been in decline in recent years. Moreover, although Apple remains the undisputed leader, this also concerns it. Perhaps that's why the company began to seriously reconsider model range iPad, first releasing the iPad Pro with a 12.9-inch display, then complementing it with the iPad Pro with a 9.7-inch screen, and now introducing a budget version - simply the iPad, which replaced the iPad Air 2. And it is important that the price for the iPad was set to a minimum, making it even lower than that of the iPad mini 4.

True, here important nuance: Apple has removed iPad mini 4 from its range with a memory capacity of less than 128 GB. Of course, there are still plenty of them in “white” retail, including options with 32 GB, like the new iPad, but they still cost more than the new iPad. In turn, if you buy a new iPad with 128 GB of memory, it will be 2 thousand more expensive than the iPad mini 4 with the same capacity.

Let's face it: there is a fair amount of confusion. But, apparently, Apple was guided by the desire to make a truly affordable tablet, without giving rise to “cannibalism” within the line. But for this, we had to “kill” the iPad Air 2 and at the same time abandon the iPad mini 4 options with a small amount of memory. At the same time, for the iPad Pro 9.7, the new product still poses a significant threat - precisely because of the price. Thus, today the model range Apple tablets looks like this: the flagship is iPad Pro 12.9″, the middle version is iPad Pro 9.7″, and the most available models- iPad mini 4 and iPad with a diagonal of 9.7″. We decided to study the 2017 iPad in detail and figure out in which cases it is worth purchasing, and in which cases it is still better to choose the iPad Pro 9.7″ or iPad mini 4.

Let's look at technical specifications new items

Specifications of the Apple iPad 2017

So what should you pay attention to? First of all, on the Apple A9 SoC: other iPads use a chip with an X on the end (A8X, A9X), which are more productive than their “iPhone” brothers - A8 and A9. However, the A8 is used in the iPad mini. So in this respect, the new iPad is closer to the iPad mini line.

The second point: the maximum amount of internal memory in the new iPad is limited to 128 GB, while the iPad Pro has a 256 GB option. And third: the new product is heavier and thicker than both predecessors - in this parameter it is closer to the first generation iPad Air. But the battery capacity is a little larger. But what this gives can only be understood through real testing. As well as evaluate the performance of the Apple A9 at this screen resolution in comparison with the Apple A9X, Apple A8X and Apple A8. So let's get started!

    Packaging and accessories

The packaging of the new iPad is traditional for Apple tablets and is practically no different from the packaging of previous generations of tablets. The photo below, next to the box, shows the packaging with the only accessory for the iPad - Smart Cover.

The contents of the iPad itself do not promise any surprises: leaflets, a charger, a Lightning cable, stickers and a key for removing the SIM card cradle. Charger has the same power as the iPad Pro 9.7″: 10 W (2.1 A, 5.1 V).

In general, it doesn’t matter whether the iPad costs 25 thousand rubles or 83 thousand (the most expensive version of the iPad Pro 12.9″) - the packaging and equipment will be identical. For those who buy an inexpensive device, this should warm their souls :)

    Design and accessories

Externally, the new iPad is similar to its predecessors, but when we pick it up, we understand that it is worth comparing it not with the latest generation models (iPad Pro and iPad Air 2), but with the first generation iPad Air. The device is a little thicker and heavier, and doesn't have that expensive, modern design feel that you usually get from new Apple products. However, you can’t blame the iPad for being cheap and calling its appearance outdated either. It's just an iPad. No more and no less. Despite all the controversy of this decision, Apple marketers gave it a surprisingly accurate name.

Like all the latest iPads, there is an all-metal aluminum body, a Home button with a fingerprint scanner, front and rear camera, two volume buttons on the right side. But if you compare it with the iPad Pro 9.7″, there are some differences.

Firstly, the speakers are located only at the bottom, right and left of the Lightning connector. Therefore, there is no stereo sound here. Secondly, the camera does not have a flash, and the camera itself does not protrude above the back surface. Thirdly, there is no keyboard connector on the left side. Finally, fourthly, the top panel in the version with the LTE module is made entirely of plastic, while on the iPad Pro it is made in the form of a thin plastic strip.

In fact, Apple simply took the body of the first generation iPad Air. We didn't have a copy of the iPad Air to compare the two devices to be sure of this assumption, but the matching dimensions, coupled with photos of the iPad Air, leave little doubt about this. In principle, this decision is quite logical: why reinvent the wheel if you can take an existing design and simply replace the components?

At the same time, the key technologies of recent years - a fingerprint scanner and a virtual SIM card - are present in the new iPad. But, unfortunately, there is no compatibility with the Smart Keyboard and the Pencil stylus. The first is due to the lack of a dock connector, as mentioned above, the second is due to a different type of screen and glass (this will be discussed in the corresponding section).

Speaking of accessories, it's worth noting that the only accessory currently available is the Apple Smart Cover. It is available in five colors (white, navy, charcoal, red and pink sand). We received a dark blue version for testing. He is pleasant and handsome, although nothing new can be said here. Unfortunately, there is no case for the iPad, but if you happen to have a case for the first generation iPad Air lying around, it should fit without any problems.

To summarize the above, we note that Apple used the design of the first generation iPad Air in the new iPad - with all the ensuing consequences in terms of functionality and weight and size parameters. But unlike the 2013 tablet, the new product has a fingerprint scanner, and that's the main thing.

    Screen

The new iPad has a 9.7-inch screen with a resolution of 2048x1536 - in general, exactly the same parameters as the iPad Air 2. With the latest iOS update, the Night Shift function appeared, designed to correct the image in an optimal way (from a physiological point of view ) for working with the tablet before bed.

Detailed testing of the screen was carried out by the editor of the “Monitors” and “Projectors and TV” sections, Alexey Kudryavtsev. Below is his conclusion.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is scratch-resistant. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the switched off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - Apple iPad(A1823), then in all comparative photographs they can be distinguished by size):

The screen of the Apple iPad (A1823) is slightly lighter (brightness according to photographs is 127 versus 114 for the Nexus 7). This is due to the fact that there is an air gap between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix. Due to the presence of glass/air and air/matrix boundaries with very different refractive indices, such screens do not look good in conditions of intense external illumination. But their repair in the case of cracked external glass is much cheaper, since only the glass itself needs to be replaced. In this case, the situation is partially corrected by an effective anti-reflective coating on the screen. The outer surface of the screen also has a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (effective, but still worse than that of the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much more easily and appear at a slower rate than with regular glass.

At manual control brightness and when displaying a white field in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 500 cd/m², the minimum was 3.9 cd/m². The maximum brightness is very high, and given the good anti-glare properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors will be at an acceptable level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. There is automatic brightness adjustment based on the light sensor (it is located to the left of the front camera eye). Automatic brightness adjustment works in the old one Apple style(remember 2012) - brightness can only increase with increasing ambient light levels. However, if you put the tablet into sleep mode and turn it on again, the brightness will be set in accordance with the external light level, that is, it will decrease in the dark. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider at the current level of ambient light, so the user may try to influence the operation of this function. Having adjusted the brightness in complete darkness and in an office environment, we found that in complete darkness, the automatic brightness adjustment function reduces the brightness to 18 cd/m²; in an office illuminated by artificial light (about 550 lux), the brightness increases to 200 cd/m², in very bright environment (corresponding to lighting on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight- 20,000 lux or slightly more) is set to 500 cd/m². We were pleased with the result. It turns out that the auto-brightness function works more or less adequately and, to some extent, allows the user to customize their work to individual requirements. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker.

IN this tablet matrix is used IPS type. The microphotographs show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even with large viewing deviations from perpendicular to the screen and without inverting shades. For comparison, here are photographs in which identical images are displayed on the screens of an Apple iPad (A1823) and Nexus 7, while the screen brightness is initially set to approximately 200 cd/m² (across the white field in full screen), and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K.

There is a white field perpendicular to the screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field.

    And a test picture:

Color balance varies slightly, color saturation is normal.

Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens and the contrast remained at a high level.

    And a white field:

The brightness at an angle of the screens decreased (by at least 4 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of the Apple iPad (A1823) the drop in brightness is less. When deviated diagonally, the black field is lightened weakly and acquires a violet or red-violet hue. The photographs below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is approximately the same!):

    And from another angle:

When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field is excellent:

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is normal - about 800:1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 18 ms (10 ms on + 8 ms off). The transition between halftones of gray 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes a total of 25 ms. The gamma curve, constructed using 32 points with equal intervals based on the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal a blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.05, which is slightly lower than the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power-law dependence:

Color gamut is almost equal to sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components with each other:

As a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is slightly higher than the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, color temperature and ΔE change little from shade to shade - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

    Work in LTE networks

The tablet will work in almost all LTE networks, and also supports a virtual SIM card Apple SIM (more details about what it is and how to use it are described).

LTE reception is reliable. Speed measurements using the iOS application Speedtest.net (Beeline SIM card was used) showed normal results for both data receiving and downloading. However, the results may greatly depend on the operator, testing location, network load at a particular moment, etc.

iPad supports hot insertion and SIM card swapping (without reboot), as well as all the latest LTE standards and Wi-Fi (LTE-Advanced, Wi-Fi 5 GHz 802.11ac). We didn't notice any differences from the iPad Pro here.

    Camera

Camera capabilities and specifications are another aspect in which the new iPad is inferior to the iPad Pro, but matches the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4. 4K video is not supported, nor is slo-mo 240 fps (120 fps only) . The resolution of the main module is 8 megapixels. Here are examples of the pictures he takes.

The camera handles macro photography well, but not perfectly. The iPad Pro did better with this.

It is impossible to distinguish the license plates of the cars (although they were visible to the naked eye during the shooting). However, we cannot call the image fuzzy.

Sharping on the wires is practically absent.

When you enlarge the image to its original size, some blurring is noticeable, but the tree branches are worked out quite well.

For distant shots, the sharpness drops a little.

Overall, although the camera is worse than that of the iPad Pro, strictly speaking, it is more than enough for typical tablet use. The pictures come out good, quite clear, so for taking documents or a random photo on the street, when for some reason your phone is not at hand, the iPad will do without any problems.

We were also pleased with video shooting - an example is possible (1920x1080, 64.4 MB). Yes, unlike the iPad Pro, there is no 4K support, but, again, how often do you need to shoot 4K on a tablet? Perhaps, if the manufacturer’s goal is to make budget tablet, then the first thing you should save on is the camera. But Apple did not save radically and found a fine balance between quality and price. The same, however, applies to the new iPad as a whole.

    Conclusions

Apple has released a device not for geeks, demanding pros or fans of design features, but for ordinary people. For those who do not need 4K video shooting, top performance, or work with expensive accessories, but need just a tablet. Surf the Internet, read email and books, watch movies, play games... In general, do everything that the vast majority of tablet buyers do.

At the same time, what is important, owners of the new iPad will not have the constant feeling that this is a budget device - they say, they saved money on this and that... Performance is more than sufficient for everyday use, the screen is excellent, there is even a fingerprint scanner - today it is no longer a luxury or entertainment for geeks, but an essential technology that significantly increases the comfort and safety of using a tablet. Plus, excellent battery life. Yes, the screen here has an air gap, and not OGS, as in more expensive iPads, however, again, for ordinary users this is even a plus: it is no secret that the most common breakdown of tablets is associated with a broken screen. So, replacing a display whose glass is separated from the matrix costs several times less.

As a matter of fact, if you (or the person you are helping to choose a tablet) do not have a clear understanding of why he needs an iPad Pro, then you can safely buy a new iPad, thus saving almost twice. Children pester you and ask you to buy “an iPad like everyone else” - buy an iPad. A friend asks me to recommend a tablet “so that my wife can read books on the subway and my child can play educational games” - we confidently recommend the iPad. With this new product, Apple dealt a severe blow to its competitors, most of whom play on the field “almost like Apple, but cheaper,” but retained the highest level of quality. Well, we will expect innovations and technological breakthroughs from the future iPad Pro.

This page has attempted to answer the questions: What is an iPad or Apple iPad? What is the difference between iPad and laptops, and what are the main iPad differences from other tablet computers.

    What is iPad

IPad, iPad, iPad is an electronic device manufactured by Apple. For reference: Apple is a very large American corporation, a manufacturer of personal and tablet computers, audio players, phones, and software.

Externally, the iPad looks like a flat panel with a touch screen, that is, a screen on which all actions are performed using your fingers. The iPad is an Internet tablet that provides users with Internet access and performs many of the functions of a regular computer, but is still significantly different from it.

When did the first iPad appear?

The very first iPad was presented to the general public on January 27, 2010 at a presentation in San Francisco by Steve Jobs, who was then the CEO of Apple Corporation. On October 5, 2011, Steve Jobs passed away.

The start of sales of the device took place in New York on Fifth Avenue on April 3, 2010. In Russia, official sales of the first iPads began on November 9, 2010.

Since then, several iPad models have been released, differing from each other in performance, screen resolution, weight, size and other characteristics.

What types of iPads are there?

At the time of writing (January 2015) Apple Corporation 9 different iPads were released, namely:

    1. On January 27, 2010, there was a presentation of the very first tablet, which was simply named: iPad.
    2. On March 2, 2011, the second generation model was presented to the public - iPad 2, with improved characteristics compared to the first modification
    3. On March 7, 2012, the world was able to see the third generation model called “The New iPad” (with a Retina display, characterized by a very high pixel density). On the night of May 24-25, 2012, official sales of the new iPad 3 began in Russia
    4. On October 23, 2012, Apple introduced two models at once:
      • Apple iPad 4 (marketed as the "iPad with Retina Display"), which resulted in the production of the previous model, the iPad-3, being discontinued
      • and the Apple iPad mini (with a regular (non-Retina) display), which is a smaller version of the iPad Internet tablet with the same characteristics as the iPad 2, including its display resolution. The functions and capabilities of the iPad mini are no different from those of a regular, full-size iPad.
    5. see clause 4
    6. On October 22, 2013, two more new products from Apple were presented, namely:
      • iPad Air, a full-size iPad with improved features
      • and iPad mini with Retina display, which is significantly superior to its small predecessor in various respects
    7. see clause 6
    8. On October 16, 2014, Apple management presented the updated tablets to the public:
      • iPad Air 2, which, in addition to the classic versions, can also be purchased in gold color
      • and iPad mini 3 with very minor changes

    How else are iPads different?

Each generation of iPad also comes with some different features:

    • They may or may not have an additional 3G (4G, cellular) module. You can read more about it in the article
    • and have different capacities of the “hard drive”, that is internal memory. Read more in the article

    What can the iPad do?

The iPad does not completely replicate the capabilities of a laptop or computer, but, meanwhile, it has sufficient functionality for:

    1. web surfing (viewing websites and pages on the Internet);
    2. widespread use of all kinds of games;
    3. reading e-books;
    4. playback of multimedia files (video, music);
    5. viewing photos;
    6. using web applications (such as the Skype video calling program);
    7. creating photos and videos (starting with iPad2, which has built-in video cameras);
    8. many other actions;

    Advantages of iPad over laptops

The iPad has unique properties that distinguish it from laptops

    1. long battery life
    2. relatively low cost of the device
    3. sensitive touch screen
    4. Intuitive finger control, easy installation and removal of programs
    5. small size, weight and solidity of the device, which together gives it mobility comparable to some extent with conventional cell phones

What makes the iPad better than other tablets?

The points below are quite subjective, but most iPad users note these as the main ones iPad benefits over other tablets:

    1. Appearance – stylish, beautiful, durable aluminum body
    2. Workmanship
    3. Very long battery life
    4. Reliability and stability of the operating system (ios), its closed nature
    5. Availability and large number of quality games and other applications
    6. Responsive touch screen
    7. Application speed

What makes the iPad worse than other tablets?

Again, a subjective opinion created from a large number of reviews from different people, which you can read on this site

    1. Closedness of the file system (it is also marked as a “plus”)
    2. No USB
    3. Lack of support for flash technology
    4. Impossibility to upgrade
    5. For a long time fully charged batteries

What else do you need to know about iPad?

    1. Unfortunately, having purchased iPad tablet any model, you will not receive detailed instructions on its use. It’s not entirely clear why, but instructions are not supplied with iPads. This happens somewhat unexpectedly, and you need to be prepared for it.

    2. Unfortunately, you will not be able to immediately turn on and start using your newly purchased iPad. The fact is that first you need to activate it, that is, fill in some data and create an account for further work. In principle, this is not difficult, but not everyone succeeds in this procedure the first time. It is best to activate your iPad within WiFi range.

Previously, to activate an iPad you needed to have a personal computer, but now, thank God, there is no such need.

    In conclusion

On the days when sales of each model began, large queues of people lined up in all countries wanting to be the first to purchase the new product. Now we can say with confidence that the iPad is very popular all over the world.

One of the main difficulties facing those who want to buy an iPad for the first time is choosing a specific model. Some choose between different lines. Others - based on the built-in memory criterion. After all, for some, 16 GB will be a lot, but for others, this is a ridiculous figure.

Today, the choice of tablets is so large that it is easy to get lost among this variety. You can find almost any version on sale, except for the very first device. It has already become a rarity, and if someone keeps it, it is solely for the sake of history.

In this review, we will try to consider the characteristics of the most popular models of Apple tablets. Of course, it is not possible to describe all the gadgets that have come out since the start of iPad production in one article. But which iPad is the best, we will try to answer objectively.

As you understand, it’s not worth purchasing this model, whether new or used. The only exception is if you are very limited in funds, or the seller gives away the product very cheaply. Although, in the first case it is wiser to buy new smartphone from a lesser known company.

    • Devices of the first line are practically not supported by Apple today in terms of software. This, of course, does not bode well for the owner of such a gadget. The maximum OS version that is suitable for it is 5.1.1. Updating to the 6th, and even more so subsequent versions, is not possible.
    • The first tablet slows down significantly during operation. This was not noticeable when the world only knew this iPad model. But in comparison even with the second product, the slow operation of the iPad 1 is strongly felt. The reason for this negative phenomenon is most likely in the small amount of RAM.
    • A huge amount of software will never run on this device. So users won’t get any brilliant quest. To allow access to the installation of more powerful software, even jailbreaking will not help.

    iPad 2

To this day, this version of the tablet retains a good reputation. Even the fact that it was produced for 3 years indicates the positive characteristics of the second iPad.

But today it is recommended to purchase it only in very extreme situations. For example, as a gift for relatives or children for their first acquaintance with a laptop computer. Below are the arguments for and against buying a second tablet.

    Advantages:

    • The device takes into account and corrects the errors of the first generation iPad. A camera has been added, although of poor quality. It became more memory, the processor was improved, the device lost a little weight. Freezes have practically disappeared. Thanks to the camera, it became possible to communicate via Skype. However, taking photographs with it is not best idea. If only in extreme cases.
    • Low cost. This factor is extremely important especially for our country.
    • Almost all software is as it should be. The display, of course, is worse than in new generations of tablets. However, the icons look fine.
    • The device supports modern OS 8. There are rumors that in the future it will be possible to install iOS 9 on this gadget.
    • The pixels on the display are visible, and there's no denying that. And if before the release of the next line - the third - this was not noticeable, then with the release of Retina the screen of the two looks imperfect. Of course, if you are buying an iPad for the first time and have nothing to compare with, then another question...
    • When purchasing a model, you should be clearly aware that it is ending its existence on the market. And you are unlikely to be able to resell it later. After all, Air, mini and other versions have already been released. Guess how much longer the developers will support the “two”? That's right, not for long, because there are competitors such as the iPad Air.
    • According to the experience of many users, “two” slows down significantly on modern operating systems – the seventh and eighth. This is also a warning sign.

    iPad 3 (or New iPad)

Despite the two names, this line quickly ended its existence - in less than a year. And if you find it on sale, it is better to refrain from purchasing it. When the iPad 4 came out, the “three” immediately turned out to be second-rate. Sellers are interested in selling the phone, and buyers can buy something much better. A common conflict of interest for the modern market...

But if they offer you a used model at a very cheap price, then why not? The device cannot be called outdated. Retina display does not need advertising, the camera is relatively good, the processor is decent. But as users noticed, the device gets very hot. But the heating power is not so great that you will get burned. And in cold seasons, it’s great to warm your hands on a gadget.

In terms of “appearance” the three are very similar to the four. In addition, the Apple company will not stop supporting the iPad 3 operating system in the near future.

    iPad 4 with Retina display

The screen diagonal of tablets in this line is the usual - 9.7 inches. The purchase of this product is recommended only against the backdrop of comparison with previous ones. Of course he wins. But if we compare it with later models - Air and mini, of course the choice will be in their favor.

The purchase will be justified if it is made at a price significantly lower than the Air tablet costs. On the secondary market today you can buy a “four” for only 14,000 – 15,000 rubles.

Many consider the Pad 4 to be an improved version of the “three”. The team worked seriously on the mistakes and achieved good results. For example, a new thin Lightning charger has appeared. For now, the device is supported by the manufacturer. The eighth version of the operating system allows gamers to take full advantage of the gaming capabilities. Complaints about the operation of this gadget on forums are extremely rare.

    iPad Air

Needless to say, if you have unlimited finances, you should purchase the latest iPad model. Three years ago it was a line of “air” tablets, two years ago – the second generation Air. These devices turned out to be so good that it’s almost a shame to compare them with the previous model...

The “filling” of the Air is much more powerful. There is even an opinion that today there is no software that would allow 100% use of the capabilities of this gadget. In the future, such programs will probably appear. But the main thing is that the device has become super light and 30% smaller in size than its predecessor.

    iPad Air 2

iPad Air 2 in mid-2015 was one of the most powerful among Apple tablets. We can safely say that the iPad Air 2 will not lose its relevance for another couple of years.

The most powerful toys from the Apple store will work on it without freezing. And the new software, which will appear in the next 2-3 years, will also probably work perfectly on the iPad Air 2. Even after a long period after its release, its power is one of the most significant.

Since the second model came out later than the first, its price will be higher.

    First iPad mini

This product came with an unusual display diagonal size of 7.9 inches. Here the recommendations are simple - the gadget is suitable for those who value miniature size and light weight.

The most significant drawback of this tablet is the lack of Retina technology. And in terms of technical parameters, it is very similar to the second iPad.

    iPad mini 2

The device, like all new products from Apple, was popular among buyers. However, many were in no hurry to purchase it, because they anticipated the appearance of a small version with a Retina screen. With the first mini model, the company most likely simply conducted an experiment. The developer wanted to find out how popular such a product would be.

The device turned out to be useful for many. In technical terms, it is just as good as the “two”, but only of small dimensions. And its price is very attractive - on average around 20,000 rubles.

Due to high demand, the company did not hesitate to release versions 2 and 3.

The very first option on the secondary market today can be purchased for 1000 rubles. Again, good for a child. But you shouldn’t expect miracles from the device – the power is not very high. When using heavy software, there may be freezes. Overall performance indicators leave much to be desired.

    iPad 2 with Retina display

This is just a fantastic gadget! was released four years ago and already at that time was a worthy competitor to the “air” tablet. But at the same time, the device is small in weight and size.

This is one of the best small screen tablets available today. However, the picture quality is excellent. But it’s not just about it – the “filling” is also very powerful.

    iPad Mini 3

Here I would like to add some negativity... The three mini differs from its predecessor only in the presence of Touch ID. And in terms of performance, the model is inferior to Air 2. Therefore, if we talk about performance, the second “air” tablet wins compared to its younger “brother”. It is unknown whether such a gap will remain between the Air 3 and the mini 4 model.

If you are hesitating between the three and four minis, it’s just a matter of money. The only question is whether you are ready to pay an extra 6000-7000 rubles just for Touch ID.

Keep in mind that the mini family of tablets is one of the best, whichever version you choose.

    New Apple iPad 2017

Let’s say right away that with regards to this model, new does not mean better. But in terms of price-quality ratio, this device is relatively good. The product replaced the second Air, demoting the position of Pro 9.7.

The tablet does not support the keyboard element and pencil. Its performance is lower than that of Pro. But the A9 chipset is still quite fast. The display has increased sharpness, is very bright and of high quality.

This year's product design is excellent. We see the same solid metal body as other tablets. However, the new iPad is slightly thicker than the iPad Air 2 and Pro. Its thickness is about 7.5 cm.

Note also that it is relatively cheap. At the start it was sold for about 25,000 rubles.

So, in this review we looked at all the iPads in order. One way or another, each line and its functions were discussed quite well. Which iPad is better is up to you to decide. It is clear that the best product is the more “fresh” one, but what to do when finances are limited... Perhaps, with a severely reduced budget, it is better to buy an Android phone? Actually answer for yourself the question of what is best for you, taking into account the capabilities of a particular iPad model. How to choose correctly between two or more versions? You need to consider your goals and financial capabilities. When choosing a device, clearly understand the purpose of using the iPad - whether you need it for work or for entertainment. For a double purpose, when the functions of the tablet are supposed to be used 100%, it is better to purchase the most powerful and expensive gadget. today these are models of the Pro line.
