This article, as you can see from the title, contains best WordPress image plugins for various purposes - from photo blogs to creating slideshows. I have already considered some of them, so in brief description I will refer to the relevant detailed reviews.

NextGEN is the only WordPress image module from the previous collection that has not only survived for 8 years, but has also turned into one of the most recognizable and popular (it has been downloaded by more than 1.5 million people). It all started with a simple plugin for creating a gallery, but now it's full-fledged system for managing photos on your website, where there is: adding, grouping, sorting photos, creating albums, thumbnails, importing meta data and much more.

NextGEN has wide functionality, but at the same time it is quite simple and easy to use through the admin panel. The classic version contains 2 gallery options (with thumbnails and through slideshows) + 2 types of album styles with many options: design, picture sizes, zoom effects when viewing, etc. In PRO version different ways displaying even more content.

It, like all other Lazy Load solutions, allows you to speed up the loading of your web resource. BJ Lazy Load shows users graphics in articles and website design only when scrolling the screen reaches them. It is used both on individual images and in galleries - for WordPress graphics it is connected automatically. The most useful thing here is adaptation for mobile devices. The module contains many different options, widgets, and is compatible with WooCommerce and Visual Composer. A simple but functional tool.

A fairly functional and easy-to-use solution for implementing slideshows. Select files from the media library or simply drag and drop them, set the title, links and other details. The ability to add links to photos is one of the nice advantages (sometimes you come across such tasks at work).

One of the interesting features is the effect when images are initially displayed in black and white, and when hovered in color (works in modern browsers).

Despite the fact that it has not been updated for about 2 years, it works stably with new versions of the system. I like the presence of many features, for example, you can create a watermark from text or jpg / png / gif files, there are settings for transparency, watermark location, etc.

The blog has a special section/tag about - you will find interesting articles there. As for this module, it automatically creates a Thumbnail from the first image in posts or other types of posts (if, of course, the publication does not already have such an element). You can also generate thumbnails for existing notes.

This WordPress image plugin allows you to add image uploads in comments from users. In some cases, this will be useful, for example, if when asking a question on the technical support page, it is easier for a person to demonstrate the problem using a screenshot.

In the Comment Images Reloaded settings you can specify the maximum weight of the uploaded file, select the size of graphics displayed on the site, deny/allow this function for certain records, etc. Additionally, I advise you to look at the extended review - all of its options are discussed in a little more detail.

Thumbnails will also be useful to you in similar notes after articles - this will help attract the attention of readers to other publications. In the settings, you set the number of elements to be displayed and select an algorithm for selecting similar posts by categories and tags. In addition to photos, announcements are displayed (everything, in principle, is traditional).

Initially I thought of moving outdated Wordpress image plugins from previous version post at the very end in order to leave them, so to speak, for review. However, as it turned out, out of 20 solutions selected in 2010, only 3 were available. Some were last edited 5-7 years ago, but a good half of them were simply removed from the repository. This is truly a fickle fate for scripts and modules.

In principle, I could immediately place about 30-40 of them here, but I think it would be better to display 1-2 of the most effective options from each task category. Previous posts talked about how to insert and customize a single image into a post. But sometimes there is a need to place a large number of images into posts at once. For example, you wrote a report about a trip, travel, or event and you need to illustrate it with photographs. In this case, a gallery is created in the post WordPress images.

What is she? It's just a few photos arranged in neat rows. The WordPress engine has a built-in gallery editor in its functionality. We will talk about it, but it should immediately be noted that its capabilities are very limited. This editor cannot create a gallery using various visual effects, such as enlarging a picture, slide show, flipping, etc.

Using plugins: pros and cons

In order to create a full-fledged gallery using these effects, you need to use a special plugin. A lot of such plugins have been created, but now we are not talking about them. In addition, before installing a gallery plugin, you need to decide exactly whether it is needed and whether its installation is advisable.

For example, when I created my blog, I immediately installed a photo gallery plugin on it. It provided the ability to view photos in a smoothly increasing size, as a slideshow, etc., but after analyzing the loading using the plugin, it turned out that it consumes too many resources and because of it, the loading time of the site increases significantly. I had to remove it. But is it needed? I don’t have a photo blog, only some images need to be viewed in enlarged images, a slide show is not required at all, so such a plugin is simply not needed on my blog. Smooth enlargement of some pictures is implemented using built-in code.

That's why, before deciding what type of gallery you want, think carefully.

Inserting into a Record

But let's return to the built-in editor in WordPress. To insert a gallery into a post, as well as to insert an image, click on the button Add media file, but then in the window that opens on the left, select the item .

After this, you need to specify images for the gallery. You can download them from your computer or select those already downloaded to the library. Moreover, in this case, you can mark several files at once (when inserting an image, you could only check one).

After selecting photos comes setting. There are few parameters here.

Link – you can choose from three options: Media File, Attachment Page And No. If you select the first, then when you click on the picture it will open in the browser window in real size, in the second case a blog page will open containing only one image, and in the third case nothing will happen.

The next parameter is the number of columns. It depends on the width of your blog page and the selected photo size.

The display order can be random if you check the corresponding checkbox, or the one in which these photos are located in the library.

And the last thing you can choose is the image size: thumbnail, medium, large, full. It is convenient when the images placed in the post have the same dimensions or at least the same proportions. Then they can be placed several in a row. It won't look very good with images of different sizes.

Editing the gallery

Editing allows you to quickly and easily select the most suitable display option.

To go to this operation, click on any picture and see two buttons Change And Delete. Click Change and start editing.

Pictures can be sorted by dragging and dropping, reverse display order, deleted, added. You can change the size and number of columns. You can write a caption for each photo.

In many cases, the standard WordPress gallery for a blog is quite enough, but if this is not enough for you and you want additional effects, install a special plugin. Here's a list of some to try:

Today I want to talk about the capabilities and settings of one of the most popular plugins for WordPress - NextGEN Gallery, which, as is probably clear from the name, allows you to insert various galleries onto the pages of your WP blog, individual photos with the ability to smoothly enlarge them, create and display entire albums with images, add watermarks to photos, well, and it can do something else, but first things first.

In general, NextGEN Gallery reminded me quite a lot of the popular creation extension - Phoca Gallery. It is the same powerful combine for convenient formation and effective display of photo galleries, but only on WordPress pages blog, not Joomla pages. And he also knows how to add watermarks - a trifle, but nice.

Features of the NextGEN plugin for displaying galleries in WordPress

Actually, the NextGEN Gallery plugin has quite a lot of possibilities and they come down not only to creating galleries in WordPress, although, in my opinion, it does this very well. In general, in complete analogy with the Phoca Gallery extension for Joomla, it has its own demo site, where you can evaluate all the capabilities it offers for displaying photo galleries, slideshows, individual images, videos, etc.

On home page The demo of the site now provides an example of a new effect when showing a slideshow, when images simply fly off the screen when changing each other. There are many more ways. You can read about them at the link provided.

Moreover, if you pay attention, you will see that NextGEN Gallery can display slide shows and photo galleries not only in the area reserved for article texts in WordPress, but also in the sidebar (), using its own widgets.

Continuing the theme of the slideshow, we can give an example of a rather interesting display of images using this plugin, when the images do not stand still during viewing, but seem to move closer, further away, or shift, which creates a rather original effect that you can see on this page.

If you noticed, at the top of the above example there is a short code for WordPress, inserting which into the article you will get exactly this option for displaying a slide show using NextGEN Gallery:

In this short code you will need to specify as ID individual number gallery, which will have to be created in advance in the admin panel using the plugin’s capabilities (read about this below). This short code also shows the size of the slideshow window in width and height (don't forget yours, at least in FastStone Image Viewer). In exactly the same way, you can insert other types of photo galleries and single images into WordPress articles.

For your convenience, the plugin will create a special button in the WordPress visual editor that opens a window where you can select the sets of photos you need and assign the type of display - gallery, slide show, etc.

On the demo site you can also see what a gallery created using NextGEN will look like. Moreover, when displaying it, various plugin templates can be used: Caption, Carousel, Example or GalleryView.

This plugin also allows you to display not only galleries, but also their list (albums) on blog pages. Albums can be presented in expanded or compact form (shown at the bottom of the demo site page). There are also short codes for displaying lists of photo galleries (albums), which differ only in the value of the “template” variable.

The NextGEN plugin also allows you to insert individual photos into WordPress articles, and when you click on them, they will appear smooth increase. Moreover, you can add a reflection effect to the images or apply the watermarks you need to them.

It also has the ability to create galleries for viewing one photo per page. In this case, both a simple display option (Image Browser) and an option with displaying special information on this image (Exif support) are possible.

If you need to ask individual settings for NextGEN galleries displayed on individual blog pages (these settings will differ from the general plugin settings), you can take advantage of the Custom Fields capabilities that you fill in when writing or editing an article.

Installation and Russification of the NextGEN Gallery plugin

In theory, NextGEN should already work in Russian immediately after installation (the language file should be automatically downloaded from the developers’ website), but for some reason it didn’t work out that way for me and its settings were displayed in English. Therefore, I had to download a separate Russification file and put it in the appropriate plugin directory. But first things first.

Download NextGEN Gallery you can with official page— . Its installation is no different from the traditional one. Unzip the downloaded “nextgen-gallery.zip” archive and copy the resulting folder to this directory:

/wp-content/plugins/

To connect to your blog via FTP, I recommend using FileZilla, which is described in detail, because the program is convenient, simple and reliable. Then you will need to go to the WordPress admin area, go to the “Plugins” - “Inactive” tab and find NextGEN. Click on the “Activate” link under its name.

In the admin panel at the very bottom of the left column you will have a menu new area called “Gallery” or “Gallery” if the plugin was not automatically Russified. Secondly, in order to get the Russian interface, you need to download the Russian translation (file nggallery-ru_RU.mo"). After that, connect to your blog via FTP and upload this Russification file to the folder:

/wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/lang

That's it, now all of its settings will be in Russian, which is good news.

Adding Pictures and Creating Photo Galleries in WordPress

As I mentioned just above, you can get there from the very bottom of the left menu of the WordPress admin panel:

There are quite a lot of possibilities there, but we’ll probably start by adding photo galleries or images, which you can then display in any articles on your blog using short codes. To do this, we will need to select the “Add gallery / images” item from the admin menu.

On the first tab “Add a new gallery” you need to enter its future name in the “New” field. It should be written in Latin (preferably transliterated), and if you have not yet created the corresponding folder “wp-content/gallery/”, then you need to create it, for example, using the same FileZilla programs and be sure to install using this FTP client, allowing recording and deleting information from it.

If the folder “wp-content/gallery/” was successfully created and had access rights 777, then the NextGEN Gallery plugin will report the successful addition of the first gallery with ID=1 and a shortcode will be provided there for displaying it on the pages blog:

And if you look through FileZilla into the “wp-content/gallery/” folder, you will find inside new folder with the name that you gave to the new photo gallery (which is why I recommended typing its name in Latin).

After creating a new gallery in the NextGEN Gallery settings, you will be redirected to the “Upload Images” tab, where you can select from the drop-down list the name of the photo gallery to which the pictures you upload will be added, and then click on the “Browse” button and select one or several photos (to select them, hold Shift or Ctrl on the keyboard).

To download them, you will need to click on the “Upload images” button:

As a result, you will see a window that clearly shows the process of uploading the photos you have selected to your blog’s server, and at the same time as uploading, the plugin will create previews of these photos, which you can edit in its settings if necessary. Physically, the preview files will be located in the following path “/wp-content/gallery/name/thumbs”.

The process of downloading new pictures can be repeated the required number of times if you need to download photos from different folders on your computer.

Although you can, for example, prepare a folder on your computer in advance with the necessary images for a future photo gallery and pack it in Zip archive , which can then be uploaded to the server on the “Upload Zip file” tab (where the Zip archive will be automatically unpacked). Not a bad option.

You can change the preview sizes in the NextGEN settings by following the following path: “Settings” - “Thumbnails”. You can set the size for large images (those that will open when you click on the thumbnail) on the “Images” tab. In general, dig around - you will find a lot of interesting things there.

For example, on the “Watermark” tab, you can set it to apply to all photos of a particular gallery. It can be specified as a graphic file by specifying the path to it, or simply by typing text in the appropriate field, selecting the font type and size.

The position of the watermark on the photo gallery images can be set in the Preview area:

Now let's go into the settings of the Gallery we just created.

Since we started talking about adding watermarks, we should mention that to do this you will need to check the boxes next to the desired photos, select the “Install watermark” option from the drop-down list and click on the “Apply” button. After this, the previews of all the images you selected that belong to NextGEN will be recreated with the desired inscription or logo added to them.

You can check whether the watermark has been added correctly by clicking on the “Edit Thumbnail” link next to the photo you need. Here, by the way, you can select the preview area with the left mouse button and click on the “Update” button, after which the area you selected will become a preview.

In order for your gallery images for WordPress to be able to , you will need to add for each photo in the "Alt & Title Text / Description" column in the top field called ). In the lower field you can enter a description for the photo, which will be displayed when viewing its full-size version.

Please note that when viewing a list of galleries in the NextGEN Gallery settings, or when viewing images of any individual photo gallery, the first column will always indicate its ID or photo ID, which you may need when inserting a slideshow or a separate image into an article using short codes

NextGEN - insert galleries, slideshows and photos into articles

Unfortunately, I don’t have a visual editor in WordPress, so I can’t take screenshots explaining the process of adding a photo gallery, slideshow, album or individual photo to an article. But the essence of this action is quite simple.

In the article editing window, you click on the button that the NextGEN plugin added there. As a result, a pop-up window will appear with several tabs: gallery, album, image.

You go to the tab you need and select from the drop-down list, for example, the photo gallery you need with images (which you created in the manner described above), and also check the box next to the required display method, for example, for the gallery these will be the options: list of images, slideshow .

In the place where your cursor was in the text input window, a short code for the NextGEN plugin will appear, which will create a gallery or slideshow in this article. In general, you can do without a visual editor. In this case, you just need to manually insert a short code into the desired place in the article text and write it required parameters. At first glance it may seem difficult, but over time you will get used to it very quickly.
