• Wireless router xiaomi mi router 3 review. Instructions for setting up and connecting Wi-Fi on Xiaomi routers

I bought a router specially Xiaomi mini WiFi to prepare some detailed instructions for setting up this interesting router. By the way, judging by the reviews and comments in online stores, the router from Xiaomi is very popular. And this is not even strange; for a small amount we get a beautiful, powerful and high-quality router. In addition, the router is dual-band, of course with support for the 802.11ac standard, and even with a USB port. Yes, this is a Chinese router, but Xiaomi is good company, and very popular.

The Xiaomi router itself is very beautiful, stylish and unusual. I will review this router in a separate article. And in this article I want to describe in detail the process of setting up the Xiaomi mini WiFi router for the first time. I'll show you how to connect a router, set up a Wi-Fi network, and the Internet. I will prepare setup instructions soon public access to files on USB drive, router firmware, etc.

Control panel in Chinese. What to do, how to change the language?

As for setting up Xiaomi mini WiFi, this is most likely the only point that may disappoint you about this router. The fact is that the router settings are in Chinese. There is no option to choose Russian, or even English. If you want the control panel to be in Russian, you will have to flash the router with third-party firmware (PandoraBox, Padavan). The firmware process itself is complex. Perhaps I’ll write about this in a separate article.

English language can be added. Needed in Wi-Fi settings you need to change the region to Europe and update the firmware. I will also write about this in a separate article. Well, I advise you not to bother and just set up the Xiaomi mini router according to my instructions. Will anything change if the settings are in English? This is a router, you configure it and forget about this control panel. And everything is exactly what language it is in. The main thing is that the Internet works well and stably.

One more thing, the router can be configured from a smartphone or tablet using the Mi Router application. The application is in English, everything is clear there. We will also consider this option at the end of this article.

This instruction should be suitable not only for Xiaomi models mini, but also for WiFi MiRouter 3, and Mi WiFi Nano.

Xiaomi Mi Router Mini: setting up Wi-Fi and Internet

First, connect power to the router, and connect the cable from the provider or modem to the “Internet” port.

Next we need to go to the settings of the Xiaomi router. First we will look at the first setup from a computer (laptop). You can connect your computer to the router using a cable (although there is no cable included), and via Wi-Fi. Immediately after turning on, a wireless network with the name “Xiaomi_some numbers” will appear. It is not password protected. Let's connect to it.

If you have access to the Internet right away through your router, then it makes sense to configure it through the Chrome browser, or Yandex Browser. They can translate pages on the fly. And the control panel will be more understandable. The translation there is not perfect, but still better than Chinese characters.

1 Open any browser and go to the address miwifi.com (it is listed at the bottom of the router). Or 192.168.31.1 . You can look detailed article, in which I showed. On the first page, just click on the big Chinese button :) This is something like a license agreement.

2 Next you need to set the Wi-Fi network name and password for it. The password must be at least 8 characters. Since the router is dual-band, the password will be the same for networks on two frequencies. It can be changed later in the control panel. Let's continue with the setup.

3 In the next window, we need to set a password that will protect the router settings. This password will need to be specified when entering the router settings. Enter your password and click on the button to continue. If you want the router password to be the same as the Wi-Fi password, you can simply check the box. But I don't recommend doing that.

4 We see a message that the router will create two Wi-Fi networks at different frequencies, their names will be indicated there. The router will reboot.

After the reboot, a Wi-Fi network will appear with the name we set during the setup process. Connect to this network using the configured password.

5 In the settings window, if you have not closed it yet, you can click on the button and you will see a message asking you to install a proprietary application on your smartphone to control the Xiaomi router. You can install this application in App Store, or Google Play‎if you need it. It's called Mi Router. Below I will show you how to set up a router from your phone using this application.

Important point! If the Internet through the router is already working on your devices, then the setup of the Xiaomi router is complete. If you want, you can go into its settings, I’ll show you how to do it below.

If Internet does not work through the router, then it needs to be configured.

Entering the Xiaomi router settings and setting up a connection to the provider

1 In your browser again, go to miwifi.com. You will be prompted for a password. Enter the password you set during the first setup. This is not a password for Wi-Fi, but rather for a router.

2 To set up the Internet (connections to provider) go to settings to separate page as shown below. Select your connection type from the list. Most likely you need to select PPPoE. It’s just that if you had a DHCP (Dynamic IP) connection type, then the Internet through the router would work without configuration. You can check your connection type with your provider.

3 After selecting PPPoE, you will need to set the necessary parameters for the connection. These parameters are issued by the Internet provider. Also, they are most likely indicated in the documents that were given to you when you connected to the Internet.

4 If your provider uses MAC address binding, you can change it on the same page, below. Just enter the required MAC. Or ask your provider to write down the MAC address of your router, which is indicated in this field, or on the body of the device itself.

You need the router to connect to the Internet and start distributing it to your devices.

Setting up a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless network. Changing your Wi-Fi password

If you want to change the name of the Wi-Fi network, password, channel, or for example disable the network at some frequency 5 GHz, or 2.4 GHz, then go to the settings and go to the page as shown below.

If you scroll down the page, you will see the 5G Wi-Fi settings there, as far as I understand the guest network settings and changing the region.

As you can see, nothing complicated. Even though the settings are in Chinese.

First setup of a Xiaomi router from a phone or tablet (Mi Router)

You can configure the router using mobile device. First you need to install the proprietary Mi Router program on your phone. We install it from Google Play or App Store. If you don’t want to install the application, you can configure it through the browser of your mobile device, as I showed above.

Connect your smartphone to the Xiaomi router. The Wi-Fi network will have a standard name and will not be protected by a password. Also, do not forget to connect the Internet to the router.

On my iPhone, immediately after connecting, a window appeared with the router settings. And on Android, in the Mi Router program you need to select the “Set up a new router” item. We indicate the location where the router is installed and click the "Next" button.

The router will check your Internet connection, and if your provider uses a DHCP connection, you will see a message that the Internet is connected. Like in my screenshot below. And if you have technology PPPoE connections, then you will need to set some parameters (login, password).

The last step is to set a password for the Wi-Fi network and change the name of the network. Enter this information and click the "Finish" button.

Please note that the password set on the Wi-Fi network will also be used to access the router settings when logging into the control panel at miwifi.com.

That's all, the router setup is complete. If something does not work out, then go to the settings through the browser and change the necessary parameters.

Even without updating the router's firmware to English or Russian, you can configure it without any problems, and everything will work. Yes, the settings are very difficult to understand in Chinese. Even in English it would be easier. There is an English version of the original firmware; in a separate article I will show you how to install it.

I really liked the router, both externally and stable work. Write your reviews about this model, share tips, and ask questions. Always happy to help with advice!

Pleasantly surprised: 1. Beautiful design. 2. Very powerful in level - this was the main reason for the purchase; of the disadvantages - Chinese firmware. You need to immediately change it according to the instructions from the Internet. Two ports, but I have this specifically for Wifi - it’s not important, and those two are empty. From 4pda there is good description how to upgrade it to more advanced firmware. Can be used as internet radio

Excellent router, compared to dir-300 the speed and stability of the connection has increased))

The router looks great and works even better. But with all the ease of connection, there are a couple of nuances, firstly, the interface language is CHINESE, and secondly, it supports only two protocols PPPOE connections, DHCP, and this turned out to be a problem since most providers in my area distributed the Internet using the PPTP protocol

IPTV not working? That is, it is impossible to connect a Smart TV via dedicated cable or WIFI?

Hello! This router great thing! Works with full efficiency even with standard firmware. A friend asked me again ASUS firmware and the possibilities have become much larger and more logical. For the money, this is what you need. Simple and neat in appearance. Lots of information on YouTube and Google.

For me, the minus is that the input is only up to 100 Mb/s. Two samsung tv(SMART) they see 5G perfectly, the connection is not lost (before this, with TP-link you constantly had to overload the router). From your computer you can launch movies via Smart View from any of the devices in the subnetwork, even from a flash drive installed in the router onto which you download torrents. The two channels are successfully combined: one phone in the apartment runs on 2.4, the rest of the devices on 5. I left the native (stable) firmware updated), installed a Russified application on the phone. I organized the subgrid only using Windows. In two weeks, once the speed on the phone dropped significantly: I overloaded the phone - it was restored (90Mb/s to 80Mb/s).

    Svetlana:

Excellent router, the Internet flies. We bought it for a cottage with concrete floors, and thought we would have to install one router on each floor, but one was enough, and the Internet is available even on the street and in the bathhouse! We are very pleased with the purchase, especially our 16-year-old son, now at the dacha he has access to the network, just like in an apartment!

I apologize why in the description they don’t write that it’s in Chinese where is the Russification

I bought 2 routers, one for home, the other for work, it works fine, it gives out loss positions. So far I'm happy for the money

Very good router, the Internet began to hit even distant rooms without a repeater, and the design is attractive. But it’s a pity that the web interface is entirely in Chinese, and it doesn’t have WPS. For simple user The most important thing is to arm yourself with a translation from Chinese in a search engine. Setup took two minutes.

    Anatoly:

Good afternoon. What language is the firmware of the router you currently have in stock? Is the adapter for the plug included or do I need to buy it separately?

Almost everything modern devices equipped with Wi-Fi support in the 5 GHz band. Higher speed, less interference. It’s time for our readers to switch to this standard, because thanks to Xiaomi this can be done for a reasonable price. As a bonus - the opportunity to create your own home media server no expenses in just two clicks.

We are used to things being either cheap or high quality. Xiaomi gadgets often break stereotypes by offering modern features, high quality assembly and low cost at the same time.

The company’s line of home routers was no exception. Today it includes the budget Youth, the practical Router 3 and several NAS options (a server for downloading, storing and distributing content via home network), the younger model of which is gradually no longer sold.

The best option for home, because you simply won’t find other dual-band routers for $29.

    Appearance

Xiaomi designers sometimes manage to create truly masterpieces. Router 3 is one of them. Matte white, sleek and stylish.

The router does not have mounting holes or brackets, which makes it impossible to place the router on the wall. Numerous holes for ventilation will not help either - it will not be possible to install standard fasteners in them. But this is not a drawback, because Xiaomi Router 3 fits into any interior or even none at all.

By the way, there are no radiators either - the cooling is passive. No significant heating is observed.

The solutions used led to weight reduction, absolute silence during operation and the ability to install the router in any interior. It is difficult to find a room in which there is no place for Xiaomi Router 3.

All connectors are located on the rear panel: 2 LAN ports (up to 100 Mbps) for connection network cable, WAN for wired connection of devices to the router, USB 2.0 port, power connector and hidden reset button.

To notify the user about operating modes, there is a standard light at the LAN input and a bright indicator on the front panel of the device.

    Characteristics

The router is based on a single-core MediaTek processor MT7620A with a frequency of 580 MHz. Volume RAM- 128 MB. The same amount is allocated for storing firmware and settings.

The router belongs to the AC1200 class and provides speeds of up to 1,200 Mbit/s. This is achieved by dividing the channel into two separate Wi-Fi networks: at a frequency of 2.4 (with speeds up to 300 Mbit/s) and 5 GHz (with speeds up to 867 Mbit/s). For everyone frequency range uses its own pair of independent external antennas. Implemented MIMO 2×2 protocol. With its help it is achieved increased speed transfers and more quick exchange data between devices connected to the network.

All network ports designed for speeds of 100 Mbit/s. But use Wi-Fi at 5 GHz with Xiaomi Router 3 on full speed only possible inside wireless network.

    Software

Xiaomi's popularity is largely due to a single ecosystem in which the company's engineers include everything larger number devices that connect to a single management application smart home MiHome. Xiaomi Router 3 is no exception.

If there are no other company devices in the house, you can use separate application MiWiFi Router for setting up and managing all Xiaomi routers.

The only drawback is the lack of Russification. All settings are available in English only. The Russified version can be installed by downloading the apk file from one of the thematic resources. But this is not the worst thing: the web version of the interface uses Chinese. In this case, either a translator or flashing will help.

The MiWiFi Router application interface contains four tabs.

In the first tab you can find a list of all devices that have ever been connected to the router. You can also find out information about traffic, current consumption, see IP and MAC addresses, disable Internet access, block the device or configure channel bandwidth for it. This is where you configure other network devices companies.

The second tab is required to access connected drives.

The third tab provides access to the capabilities of the built-in download client. Torrent files are supported. The last tab contains all other settings.

You can change the login and password for connecting to Wi-Fi and the router, update the firmware, turn off light indication or set up a guest network. The Wi-Fi schedule and scheduled reboot are also configured here.

The application also has more advanced features. Thus, the “Wi-Fi Optimization” item launches an analysis of the environment and selects optimal settings. There is a built-in task manager (Task Manager), which allows you to configure the parameters of downloads and distributions.

In the “Manage Bandwidth” item, you can configure the network bandwidth for the router and each of the connected devices. It is possible to customize own cloud for photos from all connected mobile devices.

There is also a built-in Samba client that allows you to turn the router into a home media server.

You can access the device management web interface by opening miwifi.com in your browser or going to 192.168.31.1. Here you can configure VPN, DHCP, port-forwarding, operating modes (router, repeater, bridge). Using third-party firmware can expand the functionality of the device.

    Testing

Testing was carried out in a standard two-room apartment. The router was installed at the entrance. In addition, a Xiaomi Mi WiFi Amplifier signal amplifier was purchased.

The quality of the coating turned out to be beyond praise. To demonstrate the work, a small measurement was carried out. The figure shows the apartment plan, the screenshots show the signal level at points 1, 2, 3, 4 in accordance with the serial number. Signature network plus - reinforced with using Xiaomi Mi WiFi Signal Amplifier.

The router perfectly distributes the Internet not only to 55 square meters of the apartment. The coverage area extends to both the parking lot and the landing. Even the neighbors have enough.

The screenshots above show the signal levels of networks in the 2.4 GHz band.

IN in this case shows the signal levels of networks in the 5 GHz band.

Online Wifi speed a little less, but even the current tariff allows you to transfer the entire possible connection speed. At wired connection the router “squeezes out” the required 100 Mbit/s.

Unfortunately, due to the 100-Mbit LAN, the router's capabilities in the 5 GHz band are limited - it is simply not able to offer higher Internet speeds. However, you can build a home network by connecting devices together.

In addition, Xiaomi has limited the capabilities of the USB port. You can connect storage devices to it, but not printers or 3G modems. There is also no built-in print server in the official client.

But it is possible to configure automatic creation backup photos from your smartphone, as well as use the built-in download client.

    Additional features: Mi WiFi Amplifier

If necessary, you can expand the coverage area using a proprietary signal amplifier Mi WiFi Amplifier.

Externally, the device resembles a regular 3G modem in white matte plastic. The lower part is equipped with a hinge for more convenient installation. Mi WiFi Amplifier is an even more laconic gadget than Router 3: it only has a status diode and a recessed reset key.

To connect, just install the Amplifier in the USB connector of the router and wait until the blue LED signal lights up. The signal amplifier is then installed in any powered USB port.

The coverage area almost doubles. It is impossible to show this in full force due to the small area of the apartment, but the signal level graphs demonstrate everything quite convincingly.

The device is capable of broadcasting a signal only at a frequency of 2.4 GHz and, according to official data, works exclusively with Xiaomi routers. With a certain amount of luck and correct version Mi WiFi Amplifier applications can be connected to routers of other brands using the proprietary Mi Home application.

    Why choose Xiaomi Router 3?

    • Supports dual-band Wi-Fi 2.4/5 GHz.
    • MIMO support.
    • Possibility of connecting an external storage device.
    • Convenient setup using an application for iOS and Android.
    • Possibility of creating a home network.
    • The cheapest router in its class. Price - 29 dollars.
    • Convenient (and cheap - only $8) expansion of coverage area using Mi WiFi Amplifier.

For initial setup most convenient to use mobile application MiWiFi, you can download it by reading the QR code from the original packaging.

On Xiaomi smartphones with proprietary MIUI shell To call the scanner, just swipe from top to bottom to call the information panel. In the right corner of the search field there is an icon for calling the scanner.

In principle, the application can be found manually on Google Play, it is called MiWiFi Router.

When you first launch the application, you will be prompted to create a new Mi account, or log into an existing one. On Xiaomi smartphones, you can log into your existing account with just one click, the system will automatically detect all login parameters.

You need to connect to the router's wireless network in advance. On Mi smartphones, “native” routers are marked in the list of networks with a proprietary logo. After connecting to a wireless network, the application searches for devices on the network.

The setup process is extremely simple and resembles setting up Zyxel router Keenetic using the appropriate mobile application. A special step-by-step wizard is used in which only the most important parameters are configured.

After changing the wireless network settings, the application will automatically switch the smartphone to new network. Everything is as automated as possible and does not require user participation. For beginners and little experienced users just right.

By the time this publication was completed, the application had been updated with minor interface changes. The menu is divided into 4 categories: Mi Router, Storage, Plug-ins, Settings.

In the Mi Router section, you can switch between several routers (if there are several of them), as well as view statistics on traffic and connected devices.

The Storage section is focused on using external hard drive. On Xiaomi routers, you can deploy a small cloud, which can be configured to upload files from your smartphone when it is connected to your home network. The function is aimed at owners Xiaomi smartphones. However, there is a desktop client for PC and Mac, which will allow you to use the functionality of the device as a regular network drive.

The plugins section contains router settings regarding its direct functions. But such settings as password, time zone, etc. moved to a separate settings section.

You get used to the application very quickly, after which you unmistakably find yourself in the required section. For experienced users, the list of available options will be clearly insufficient, for example, no IPTV settings, there is no support for 3G modems, and in general, all options and settings are greatly simplified and optimized for inexperienced users.

Xiaomi routers are greatly simplified in terms of settings and make them ideal option for inexperienced users who require a simple and reliable solution.

A little more settings are available through the web interface, which is accessible via domain name miwifi.com, or IP 192.168.31.1 (sometimes 192.168.28.1).

By the way, if you use Kaspersky Anti-Virus, for unknown reasons, sometimes it blocks access to IP 192.168.31.1 and 192.168.28.1 via HTTP protocol, making it impossible to access the web interface. It helps to disable the antivirus and change the home subnet in the router settings to the more familiar 192.168.0.0/24, 192.168.1.0/24, 192.168.2.0/24. There shouldn't be any problems in the future.

If you are setting up your router for the first time without using the mobile app, you will also be greeted with a setup wizard when you first launch it.

Below you can see all the available options that can be configured using the web interface.

The list of available options is much wider than in the mobile application.

There are a couple of notes on the settings and use of the interface. Firstly, the QoS option should not be enabled if necessary. The fact is that by default all traffic passes using HW_NAT (hardware NAT), without creating a load on CPU. To be more precise, when processing 94 Mbit/s? CPU usage will be only 2-4%. When QoS is activated, the use of HW_NAT will become impossible and all traffic will go through the processor. The more devices there are on the network and the faster the connection speed, the higher the processor load will be, up to 100%.

    WiFi performance and quality

Both routers have an excellent processor that provides good performance.

Please note that MiWiFi devices are designed primarily for the Chinese domestic market, which is why support for L2TP and PPTP is implemented here in a basic form.

When using native firmware, in conjunction with L2TP/PPTP you can only count on 50-60 Mbit. For those who like to work with a file, we inform you that alternative firmware Both routers seamlessly provide up to 100Mbps VPN speeds and more.

Regarding the most common types of connection via DHCP/Static IP/PPPoE/IPoE - to routers on stock firmware There are no complaints at all, up to 95 Mbit is guaranteed to you.

Regarding Wi-Fi, to be honest, both routers were a very pleasant surprise. When setting the maximum power level to “Block” (on some versions of the firmware “Wall penetration”), both routers “pierce” solid load-bearing walls without any problems.

Quite expectedly, Mi WiFi Mini is slightly inferior to Mi WiFi Router 3 in signal level, which is clearly visible in the broadcast scans.

The older model provides more high level signal in both the 2.4 and 5 GHz range. Sometimes this difference can reach 10 dBm, but most often the difference does not exceed 2-4 dBm.

Many users have a question: why do we need 5 GHz support in a router that is equipped with 100 Mbit ports?

In “spherical vacuum” conditions, 802.11n in the 2.4 GHz range using MIMO 2x2 and 40 MHz channels pumps 94-95 Mbit without problems. In actual operating conditions, especially in apartment buildings, the 2.4 band is loaded to such an extent that even 50 Mbit will be an excellent result.

The 5 GHz band provides more non-overlapping channels and higher speeds.

Let's take a look real example. I have a laptop that supports the 5 GHz band, but does not support 802.11ac (802.11n only). We placed the laptop at a distance of 8 meters from the MiWiFi Router 3, between the devices there is 1 load-bearing solid brick wall (~55 cm) and 2 half-brick walls.

In 802.11n + MIMO 2x2 + 5 GHz mode, we received an average of 90 Mbps over the air. This is an excellent result.

Now let's see what happens in real conditions for 2.4 GHz.

Less than 20 Mbit, just, no comments here. As you can see, there are benefits from 5 GHz even on older devices.

Let's see if a proprietary extender can correct the situation. Just for fun, we tried placing the Mi WiFi Amplifier in the middle. As a result, the speed became more stable and rose to 21-22 Mbit.

To be honest, I didn’t expect any special results from WiFi Amplifier. The problem is that, wanting to make the device cheap, the company greatly overdid it. The extender only supports legacy 802.11b/g/n standards, SISO (MIMO 1x1) configuration and internal antenna. As a result, ideally 150 Mbit of channel speed is available, which must be divided between clients and the uplink. In noisy air conditions we get the same 20-40 Mbit.

Mi WiFi Amplifier is capable of increasing the coverage radius, but you shouldn’t expect great speed from it. The expander is more suitable for " smart home" and "Internet of things", when the network is not presented large requests by speed.

    In conclusion

After two weeks of using both routers ( serial connection) I did not have any problems in terms of network speed and stability.

There are still some comments, but they relate to the features of the software. There is no usual Russian language, there is Chinese and English. When you try to update from the official website, you may receive a device entirely in Chinese. To switch to English, you need to set the “Europe” region in the Wi-Fi settings, after which it will become available English language. There are also special English firmwares, which is what we recommend using, or alternative ones if you have the necessary knowledge to install them.

If you are looking for a router that is inexpensive, yet powerful and at the same time easy to set up, both models are a great buy, especially if you own a Xiaomi smartphone.

Of the minuses, one should also note the limited list available settings on official firmware.

    Online course on network technologies

I recommend Dmitry Skoromnov's course "". The course is not tied to the equipment of any manufacturer. It provides fundamental knowledge that everyone should have system administrator. Unfortunately, many administrators, even with 5 years of experience, often do not have even half of this knowledge. In the know in simple language many different topics are covered. For example: OSI model, encapsulation, collision and broadcast domains, loopback, QoS, VPN, NAT, DNS, Wi-Fi and many other topics.

I will separately note the topic of IP addressing. It describes in simple terms how to make translations from decimal system numbering to binary and vice versa, calculation by IP address and mask: network addresses, broadcast addresses, number of network hosts, subnetting and other topics related to IP addressing.

The course has two versions: paid and free.

The Xiaomi Mi Wi-Fi Router 3 International version is designed in a strict and at the same time attractive minimalist design style. Non-standard execution of familiar devices has long become a unique highlight of the Xiaomi company. Slim body with smooth rounded lines and pleasant lighting, equipped with four powerful antennas, which adds unusualness appearance devices.

    Boosted signal

The development engineers tried to achieve a truly strong signal with an increased level of quality. To do this, they successfully optimized all the functions of the device, giving it the ability to connect an unlimited number of auxiliary and main gadgets. In order to increase data transmission power, the Dual Band option is also installed, allowing you to receive an ultra-strong dual-band stream.

High speed and stability of the Xiaomi Mi Wi-Fi Router 3 International version
