• Setting up a VPN connection using Windows OS. VPN problems and solutions

IN modern world cyberspace has become much more popular than the real world. Young people are more likely to spend time playing online games and social networks than going for a walk or reading a book. And this is understandable - the availability of information increases awareness and general development person. However, for some reasons, information and social resources may be blocked by providers, government agencies, or the sites themselves. In this case, do not despair, since in most cases the blocking can be bypassed.

What is a VPN connection and why is it needed?

VPN (English: Virtual Private Network) is a generalized name for technologies that allow one or more network connections(logical network) on top of another network (for example, the Internet). Despite the fact that communications are carried out over networks with a lower or unknown level of trust (for example, over public networks), the level of trust in the constructed logical network does not depend on the level of trust in core networks thanks to the use of cryptography tools (encryption, authentication, infrastructure public keys, means to protect against repetitions and changes in messages transmitted over a logical network).

    Wikipedia

    https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/VPN

To explain it in simple and in clear words, VPN is the ability to access Internet resources through other networks. In this case, several levels of channel changing are used, which means that your IP address is encrypted, and access is provided according to the following scheme: Internet - virtual network (or several virtual networks) - Internet. When using a VPN, providers “see” the connection to a certain network or server, and further requests to resources occur through an encrypted channel. Thus, data packets are returned to you regardless of blocking by the Internet provider.

When connecting to the Internet via a virtual network, the provider does not monitor traffic

The main disadvantage of a VPN is considered to be a decrease in speed while surfing and downloading files, but technology does not stand still and paid services already provide good speed communications.

How to create and configure a VPN connection on Windows 10

There are several options for setting up a VPN for Windows 10. Conventionally, they can be divided into:

    • built-in (standard OS tools);
    • third party ( special programs and browser extensions, as well as functions of some routers).

Creating a VPN through Windows Settings

Creation virtual network through " Windows Settings" - this is the most labor-intensive, but at the same time the most reliable way to gain access to blocked resources. In addition, once the VPN is created, it is quite easy to manage it and, if necessary, change the server address:

    1. Press the Win+I key combination and go to the “Network and Internet” applet.
In the “Windows Settings” block, open the “Network and Internet” element
    2. Open the VPN tab and click on the plus icon that says “Add a VPN connection.”
Click on the plus icon with the caption “Add VPN connection”
    3. Next, fill out the form:
    4. We save the changes using the button of the same name.

Click on the connection and click “Connect”

Open VPN servers can be found on the Internet, for example, or on a similar resource.

How to disable or remove a VPN connection

If you no longer need a VPN or you don’t like the services provided, the created connection can be disabled or deleted:

Automatic configuration of a virtual network using special programs

Like most Windows functions, the creation of a VPN connection was adopted by the developers software. As a result, users got a whole market with programs that simplify creating a tunnel and connecting to virtual networks. Most of them are a small window with just one button - connect/disconnect from VPN.

One such program is HideGuard VPN. Using her example, it is very easy to see how a connection to a virtual network occurs:

    Setting up via router

Unfortunately, not all routers support VPN connections. To do this, the router must have DD-WRT technology, but devices that are less than four years old almost certainly have necessary firmware. The settings of routers vary, but in general, virtual network management is located in the same tabs:

    VPN in browser

Instead of establishing a virtual connection for the entire computer, you can resort to a partial one using a VPN in the browser. There are two possibilities for this:

    • internal browser settings (for example, Opera has a built-in function with a good and free VPN);
    • extensions in browser stores.

“Turbo” modes in some situations can also be considered virtual networks, but they only work when your browser has low speed access to a specific address; in other cases, the function is ignored.

To enable VPN in Opera browser, you need to change your browser settings a little. To do this, press the key combination Alt+P, select “Advanced” in the menu, then “Security” and slightly scroll down the page with settings. We find the VPN column and switch the toggle switch to the working position.

Turn on the VPN by moving the corresponding toggle switch to the right position

In other browsers you can install additional extensions which will add the VPN feature to the browser:

I prefer to use a browser-based VPN, and there are several reasons for this. Firstly, for most extensions you can set exceptions in the operation of the virtual network, and this provides huge advantages, for example, applying the service to only one or two sites. For the rest of the Internet, the original connection will be used. Secondly, when downloading files through applications and exchangers, the traffic will not exceed the amount of information received, since packets are often “lost” when passing dozens of nodes in the virtual network. And besides, I always value connection speed, and a virtual network, even a paid and fastest one, will slow down data transfer, which is unacceptable in some cases.

Work with VPN on a computer under Windows control 10 is very simple. By standard means you can create and configure a virtual connection. If necessary, it can be quickly removed or temporarily disabled.

A private virtual network (VPN) is good because it provides the user with a secure or trusted channel with another PC without the need for a dedicated communication channel. It is created on top of another network - the Internet, for example.

Windows has built-in tools for establishing a VPN connection between computers located on long distances. Let's set up a VPN tunnel between two PCs that are controlled by the Windows environment.

    Let's create the server part

Connection of remote clients to the VPN network is organized through a special access server. It may require an incoming connection to go through identification and authentication procedures. It knows which users have access to the virtual network. It also has data about allowed IP addresses.

To set up a VPN access server in the Network Control Center, you need to open the applet for changing adapter settings. If the applet's main menu is not displayed, press the Alt button. A main menu should appear at the top of the applet, in which you should find the “File” item, and then select “New incoming connection”. Let's take a closer look.

In the control panel, go to “Network and Internet”.

In the next step, we will open the network center.

Let's create a new incoming connection.

A window will appear asking you to choose from existing users or determine new ones who will be allowed to connect to this PC.

When adding a new “user”, you need to specify a name and password with which he will be allowed to connect to the VPN access server.

The next step is the setup wizard private network will ask how users will connect.

It is necessary to indicate that they will do this over the Internet, so let’s check the required option.

The next step is related to establishing network applications, which should accept incoming connections. Among them is the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) component. You will need to open its properties and manually enter the range of IP addresses that are allowed to access the server.

Otherwise, leave this matter to the DHCP server for automatic detection"IPs". In our case, we had to manually determine them.

After processing the entered data, the access server will receive the required information to provide the necessary permissions to authorized users. At the same time, the system will prompt you for the computer name that will be needed in the future.

As a result, we will get the following result. There are no connected clients yet.

    Let's set up the client

Modern networks are most often built according to client-server architecture. It allows you to highlight main computer in a networked environment. Clients initiate requests to the server and make the first attempt to connect to the server.

We have already configured the server part of this architecture. Now all that remains is to get the client part working. Another computer must act as the client.

We will establish a new connection in the network center of another PC (client).

We need to connect directly to the workplace.

Again, let's turn to the network Windows Center only now another PC. Let's select the option to set up a new connection. The applet that appears will offer several options to choose from, but we will need the option to connect to a workplace. The wizard will ask you how to make the connection. We need to opt for setting up an Internet connection (VPN).

In the next step, the wizard will ask you to specify the IP address of the VPN access server and assign a destination name. The IP address of the access server can be found on our first computer by entering command line ipconfig command. The IP address of the Ethernet network will be the address you are looking for.

Then, the system will apply all entered settings.

    Let's make the connection

Time X for our experiment is when the client connects to the server side of our network. In the network center, select the “Connect to a network” option. In the window that appears, click VPN-Test (we specified the destination with this name) and click the connect button.

So, we will open the VPN-Test connection applet. IN text fields We will indicate the “user” name and password for authorization on the access server. If everything goes well and our user not only registers on the network, but is also able to fully connect to the access server, then the designation of the connected “user” will appear on the opposite side.

But sometimes, this kind of error can happen. The VPN server is not responding.

Click on the incoming connections tab.

On the marked tab, open the properties of the IP protocol.

Let's set the option to specify IP addresses explicitly and specify which IP addresses need to be served.

When we reconnect, we will see this picture. The system shows us that one client is connected and this client is vpn (SimpleUser).

    Brief summary

So, to establish a VPN network between two PCs, you will need to decide which of them should become the “master” and play the role of a server. Other PCs must connect to it through an authorization system. Windows has tools that enable the creation of a server part for our network. It is configured by creating a new incoming connection, specifying the user, and the applications that should accept the connection. The client is configured by establishing a connection to the workstation, specifying the user and server data to which this user should connect.

Many people don't know how to set up vpn connection, however, this is not a tricky matter, but it requires certain skills. First, let's figure out why such a connection is needed. VPN literally translates as virtual private network. As the name suggests, it serves to create a tunnel between two computers, through which information is transmitted in encrypted form. Thus, the confidentiality and anonymity of all transmitted information is ensured. Now let's look at the basic steps for VPN settings.
    1. Make sure the connection is correct home computer To world wide web.
    2. After making sure the connection is working, go to the Start menu.
    3. Select the “Control Panel” folder.
    4. Find the “Network Connections” folder.
    5. Select the link to create a new network connection.
    6. In the first window, click on “Next”.
    7. Select “Connect to a network at the workplace” and again click on the item “Connect to a virtual network”, again the “Next” button
    8. In the next window you need to select an option depending on your connection type:
    do not dial the number to pre-connect;
    dial the number to pre-connect.
    9. Enter a name for the new connection.
    10. Then you need to enter ip in a special field remote computer or his name.
    11. Select users for whom it will be possible this connection from this computer.
    12. If necessary, place the icon opposite creating a shortcut on the desktop.
Your computer will then prompt you to connect immediately, but we should decline this. Select the shortcut for our connection on the main screen and right-click on it. Select the “Properties” tab. We indicate the method for restoring the connection depending on the type of network connection. We save the result.
Setting up VPN Windows finished, now to connect you just need to click on the desktop shortcut or the icon in the connections “Start” menu.

These instructions will help you set up a VPN connection on Windows XP yourself. Windows Vista or Windows 7.
IVSTAR subscribers do not need to set up a VPN connection - Internet access is provided immediately when the computer is turned on (IPoE technology is used). Thanks to this, the Internet works even faster than other providers.
