• We connect and configure the Oculus Rift virtual reality helmet. Setting up and connecting Oculus rift helmets

Many lovers virtual reality We have often wondered how to use Oculus. First, you need to download the software for connection, which can be found on the official VR Oculus website. After quick registration There you can access the developer center. The Downloads subsection contains the software components we need.

If you are only going to test content for Oculus Rift virtual reality glasses, download only the installation program. If you want to connect Oculus Rift to your computer and develop games, you will need to download the SDK Source.

After installing the programs, find the wire to connect to the USB and HDMI ports. It is paired and is located next to the helmet mount. USB works with USB ports 2.0 and 3.0, however, some users had trouble connecting the helmet to USB 2.0. If this happens to you, switch your virtual reality glasses to a different type of USB.

In addition, remove the options in the device manager to turn off power in USB connectors to save energy. The HDMI cable can be connected either directly or via special switch DVI to HDMI, which is also included in the kit.

On the side of the camera is USB port and a synchronization cable, which connect to the connector located on the wire of the virtual reality glasses. Place the camera in front of you, on top of the monitor. Move up to one and a half meters away.

The camera has a special fastener that makes it easier to use. A special indicator will light up after the device is connected. If it is orange, it will indicate that the helmet is connected, but no signal is being received. If the indicator lights up blue, the helmet is successfully connected and is ready to receive a video signal. Near the indicator you can find the on and off buttons.

Many people don’t understand how Oculus Rift dk2 connects because they haven’t configured the software. When connected, the Oculus Rift virtual reality helmet is automatically calibrated in the OculusConfigTool program, after which you need to launch a special demo by clicking on the Snow Demo Scene button.

This program is used to personalization helmet and camera. It is this scene that provides users with their first impression of using Oculus 3D glasses. After launching the application, the user finds himself in a virtual room with a ceiling and floor painted blue.

A panel with the company logo and the inscription “Start” will hang in front of you. Use the mouse to activate it and find yourself at the table. There will be many objects on the table that you can get closer to using a camera that tracks your movements.

Don't forget that the camera has a limited view, so don't bend too low or go beyond its range. In order for it to work correctly, you should be at a distance of 1.5 meters from it. If everything works well in this demo mode, the helmet setup is complete.

Not so long ago, setting up Oculus dk2 for Windows 10 was almost impossible, but over time this problem was solved. After connecting the helmet as usual, download Runtime program at developer.oculus.com.

After installation, click on Start Download, after which the application will be saved to your computer. If you tried to install it before, remove all earlier versions. After that install new version and log into your Oculus Store account. Ignore the notification that the computer is not suitable for startup - it is not.

Connection early version Oculus glasses are produced in exactly the same way, only several sets of lenses are supplied: for ideal vision, low and high myopia.

After you have inserted the lenses, use the mechanisms on both sides to adjust the distance to your eyes. They are configured separately from each other, so this can be done individually. Next, download drivers and utilities from the official website. Then do the following:

    1. run OculusConfigUtil;
    2. create new profile and indicate the version of your lenses;
    3. calculate the distance between the eyes and the lenses and calibrate;
    4. run the demo version.

Instructions for connecting Oculus Rift CV1

First you need to use HDMI cable and several USB cables to connect and install Oculus Rift CV1 sensors. After this, it is necessary to place the sensors and draw the lines of the playing area so that there is no foreign objects or furniture.

Development Kit 2 – Quick Start Guide (in English) Connecting the Oculus Rift DK2 helmet to a computer While connecting the glasses (helmet) to your computer, it is recommended to remove the option to turn off the power in the Device Manager USB connectors to save energy on Generic USB Hub equipment.

This operation must be performed when the device is already connected to your computer:

Note: It is advisable not to use adapters (for example DVI-HDMI included with glasses) for correct operation points and duplication of games.

How to properly configure the glasses and tracker In order for your device to display the image correctly, the following conditions must be met:

The camera is equipped with special mounts that facilitate the process of fixing it in the desired position.

Once connected, the indicator on the Oculus Rift DK2 helmet should light up.

Orange indicator - means that the helmet is connected, but there is no video signal being received.

The blue color of the indicator means that the helmet is connected and is not receiving a video signal.

How to set up a helmet in WINDOWS Today, glasses support stable work on several versions of Windows systems.

    These are:

Windows 7 all x64-bit versions except Starter with SP1 installed Windows 8 x64-bit (preferably Windows 8.1 x64-bit) Important! Dear users/owners of Oculus Rift DK1 and DK 2 on WINDOWS 10, the glasses manufacturer does not support their operation!

    1. Download and install drivers for DK2 glasses - currently SDK version 0_6_0_0 (for laptops 0_4_2) works correctly with all games ( This utility supplied with the DK2 Manager installation kit!)

    2. Make sure that your virtual reality glasses work correctly in Direct mode HMD access.

(To do this, launch the Oculus Configuration Utility, then select Rift Display Mode, then Direct HMD Access from Apps.

    3. Launch Demo Scene and make sure that the image is displayed on the glasses and monitor.

To do this, create a User profile (for example 123), after which the Show Demo Scene button will be active.

    4. If everything is done correctly, you will see the image both on the screen and in the glasses. Note: If the image is displayed only on the monitor, but at the same time reacts to the movements of the glasses, then you most likely have 2 video cards in the system - a card built into the mat and an additional one .

It is necessary that both the glasses and the monitor (TV) be connected to one video card.

    Or check your HDMI connection.

Duplicating games The program does not perform additional duplication; it displays only those games that initially support this duplication. These are the majority of games now.

To play games on an attraction that supports screen mirroring, your glasses must be in Direct HMD Access mode!

Computer parameters for working with DK2 Manager Any computer is suitable for working with our program. The program itself uses standard resources that any office computer can handle.

The remaining resources are used by games. Which you launch, as well as video clips that are played on each sheet of the presentation of our program - DK2 Manager.

How to get started with DK2 Manager Before installing the program, you need to check the settings of your antivirus for correct installation software.

    1. Download all distributions of the program (version 1.9), then games and videos from our portal.

    2. Launch installation file DK2 Manager v1.9.exe as administrator, then install all the suggested components.

The path to the program should look something like this: D:\DK2 Manager Our program will determine the list of components prepared for installation.

During the installation process, you may need to set permissions to install the program in antivirus pop-up messages.

After installation necessary components– the installation of the program itself will begin.

Set the path to the new folder by setting the desired drive letter:

    3. Then we place the downloaded folders with videos and games themselves into the DK2 Manager folder. Create the Games and Video folders in the DK2 Manager folder.

(It is necessary to follow exactly this sequence and this naming in order to reduce the number of settings).

Unpack the downloaded games into the Games folder using the WinRAR archiver.

After installing the program, a window will appear to activate the program:

The registered data will be sent to you by email specified for registration (you must first send a request to the address [email protected]).

    1) In the Login field you must indicate your email address to which you registered

    2) In the Password field – the password sent to you in the letter

    3) Select Language

    4) Select the “Login automatically” option (if necessary).

    Important information!

Save your registration data in a safe place in case you reinstall the program again.

The program is activated and linked to a specific computer!

If you previously did an activation, and after the update, the program requested it again, then you need to take the previously saved data and enter it in the appropriate fields. In this case, the request for email is not required - everything should work on the same computer, if its physical configuration has not changed. If your data is lost, you can restore it by writing a message describing the situation to email address [email protected] What you need to know to configure the DK2 program Manager Functions administrator program In order to start setting up the program, you need to enter the settings, the shortcut is contained in the folder with the program. Then the program will ask you to enter a password to enter the settings ( Standard password in the program - 12, if you have not changed it before).

General settings Password - area for entering the administrator password, entering which allows you to close the program running in operator mode! Also by this password you enter the Program Settings data.

The time allowed for system shutdown is ___ seconds.

Hide the panel and the Start button - prohibits calling the Start menu and parallel execution of other programs.

Disable Ctrl+Alt+Del – blocking the task manager call, necessary to prohibit the removal of processes.

Prohibit function keys- call barring Windows keys, Alt+Tab.

Create startup shortcut – this option makes the program launch immediately after Windows boots.

Track running processes– controls running programs, as they are written in the “Content” tab.

Music on background– play music from a pre-specified folder.

    Location

Location - determines the size of the output videos.

In this setting, you can specify the number of videos/games to be displayed on the monitor/TV screen, or set the parameters manually.

Display the grid and select the color of the grid lines on the screen.

Video text placement allows you to control the text of the video displayed on the presentation page.

Background – allows you to set the background color, or substitute an image as the background.

Background and frame – allows you to select the color of the frame when hovering over the desired game, set its width and change the size of the video when hovering.

Adding games yourself Content In order to add games to the program, you must have the games in the Games folder, then in Settings on the Contents tab, select the menu item “Fill contents...” as indicated in the screenshot above.

    Or another way:

    1. In the first column “Launch file” after double click, add the path to the game file to be launched. The games that you yourself will add in the future should mainly contain:

the end of the DirectToRift EXE file for or simply EXE for games from UnrealEngine games from Unity 2. The “search file” is the EXE file without prefixes. A game or demo game file is written here, which is executed on the computer while the application is running. Finding out the name of the application is quite easy - you need to go to the game folder and find the *.exe application file without the _Direct_to_Rift prefix, or look at which file the launched shortcut refers to. Its name must be copied into this column, always with “.exe” at the end of the executable file.

If this is not done, the program will not be able to track the launch of the application, display it in a report, and close it using a timer.

    3. “Video file” - this column is intended for inserting a video clip that will be played on the program presentation page. If there is no video, you need to insert a picture. If the field remains empty, the program will not allow you to save the settings made.

    4. Cost:

The cost for each game is set. The information only goes into the report.

The function is necessary for reconciliation between runs and the amount in the cash register.

    5. Time sec:

In this column you can set a timer for games, after which the game will be forced to close by the program.

Made to eliminate the possibility of multiple rentals of people in one launch.

    6. Hot keys:

After double-clicking, you are prompted to select a key or key combination to start the game Unnecessary games can be removed using “-”. To do this, you need to select an unnecessary line with one click and right-click on it. Select the “delete” item.

    –  –  –

When you click the “+” button, operator names are added.

By pressing “-”, unnecessary operator names can be removed.

Additional functions Completely analogous to the “Content” tab - this tab is used to launch any necessary applications, For example:

Important! In the “search file” field you must specify the video player application, for example the standard one for Windows – wmplayer.exe!

You must be careful when opening applications from which you can call Explorer!

Otherwise, it will be possible to carry out without control runs!

    2. Displaying a free demo of a game, the execution time of which you limit to, for example, 30 seconds - you must agree that 30 seconds will be enough for the operator to introduce a potential visitor to the capabilities of your attraction for free, but he will not be able to take money for a 30-second demonstration. You can vary the time yourself, at your discretion.

    3. You can enable the ability to launch Oculus Config Util to display the demo room for free and (!) to switch to the Extended mode of the glasses - to launch some games that have not yet learned to work in Direct HMD Access mode. (just don't forget to switch back!)

    4. You can display any tasks, including connecting to the Internet.

    Useful feature:

Reports Configure sending reports by email.

Report by sessions - parameters for generating a report Sending a report by time - specify the time separated by commas for forced sending of reports.

    Smtp server:

smtp server mailbox sender. Usually mail.ru is used

    Port:

    sender smtp port

    Password:

    Sender's mailbox password

    Sender's email:

    Report sender mailbox

    Recipient's email:

Report recipient's mailbox The sender's and recipient's emails are usually the same mailbox.

Report those programs whose execution time is more than ___ seconds.

This option was added in order not to clog the report with test launches of applications.

Look in the operator window with a field with additional functions will be like this:

Reporting on your computer This function can be used from the program folder to view reports on the operation of the attraction on site.

To do this, you need to launch the reports shortcut in the program folder:

In this form you must indicate:

period for which days/day the report will be generated runtime of games whose launch time was more than 30 seconds (set by default) click the “Apply filter” button

The program will display all launches by shift, operator and games launched by them.

Operator program functions ALL games are closed by pressing the Esc key!

When you enter the program, a window appears to select an operator who opens the current session. After selection, the game launch window becomes available. The games are launched by single clicking on the video.

The operator has the ability to scroll through the screen with games.

And also the ability to launch additional tasks:

Ending the session and turning off the computer exist by default; other functions are added in administrator mode at your discretion.

    Create your own videos

To create a video you need:

    1. Find a suitable video on YouTube

    2. Download it using the Save from Net service

    3. You can download the video editing program from our file hosting service:

    4. Unpack the program and run it

    5. Add a pre-downloaded video as shown in the example below:

    6. Select “Crop” - crop the desired area. (we recommend making videos no more than 30 seconds long so they don’t take up much space). And click Save cropping.

    7. Then select Overlay text and graphics

    8. Add text and click Apply

    9. Then, in the parameters, remove the sound - otherwise the output videos will spin with sound, mixing with each other!

Virtual reality glasses are no longer the invention of science fiction writers. In 2013, the first copy was released. People liked the product and developments in this area are progressing by leaps and bounds. Virtual reality is closer than ever and can now be seen and heard. However, new technologies require new skills. Therefore, most people are faced with the question: how to connect Oculus Rift?

In fact, there is nothing complicated in this process. Each glasses comes with a set of adapters and installation instructions. But there are situations when standard instructions doesn't help. Therefore, you need to go through all the stages of connection and all possible difficulties point by point.

How to connect Oculus Rift to your computer

A step-by-step analysis of the connection will allow you not only to solve the problems that have arisen, but also to connect the glasses if the instructions were lost.

    • First you need to connect your virtual reality glasses to your PC. To do this you need to use an HDMI cable. If the connectors do not match, then you need to use the adapter included in the kit.
    • Now you can connect USB cable. He will feed the points. It is necessary to turn off the power saving mode so that the computer can supply power to the connectors.
    • The next step is to connect the camera, which should be mounted on the monitor. There is nothing unusual about her connection. It connects with one wire to the PC, and with the second to Oculus Rift.
    • After the manipulations have been completed, one of the two lights will light up. Blue indicates that everything is connected correctly and the video signal is being received. Orange indicates that there is power, but no signal. To fix this, just turn the glasses off and on. The power off button is located next to the indicators.
    • Now you need to install drivers for Oculus Rift. They can be downloaded from the official website. It is worth noting that a disk with installation software is not included. Therefore, an Internet connection is required.
    • After installing the drivers, the following situation may occur. Virtual reality glasses will not be detected new program. There are 2 ways to solve this problem. 1. Reboot the PC and independently open the program, which is located on the system disk in the Program files directory. 2. Terminate the process manually through the task manager. After that, run everything in the manual program as well.
    • After launching the program correctly, create and fill out a profile.
    • You have to choose a display modification. As they say experienced users, it is better to select the second item (Extend desktop to the HMD). It is more reliable, and the first option is subject to failures and disturbances during image transmission.
    • After this, you can start demo mode. It will allow you to configure virtual reality glasses in operating mode.

As you can see, Oculus Rift installation is extremely simple and does not require special knowledge or skills. And using this sequence you can speed up the process to 15-20 minutes.

In the instructions, the connection is described in 11 stages, but since we encountered some difficulties in the process, I will describe the connection stages with amendments to what we know after using the helmet.

The software for connecting the helmet to a computer can be found on the official OculusVR website. By following the link https://developer.oculusvr.com/ and registering, you will have access to the developer center. We need software part located in the Downloads subsection. On at the moment latest version SDK v0.6.0 Beta

In the download section you will find 7 files:

    • Oculus Runtime for Windows - installation program for Windows
    • Oculus SDK for Windows - SDK for Windows
    • Oculus Unity Tuscany Demo - demo of the Tuscany estate on Unity for Windows
    • Unity 4 Pro Integration - program for integrating Unity 4 Pro

    What files are needed?

If you want, use the helmet just for games and various applications, then you are only interested in the installation program for your operating system. SDK Source is only necessary if you are going to develop content for the Oculus Rift helmet. Otherwise, the files in the archive will be useless to you.

After installing Oculus Runtime, you will have OculusConfigTool - an application for configuring and connecting the helmet.

    Oculus Configuration Utility

Important point. After installing Oculus Runtime, you may not be able to start OVRService_x86 or OVRService_x64 on your own (depending on your OS version). As a result, OculusConfigTool will not detect the connected helmet and you will not be able to configure it. If this happens, then you need to close the OculusConfigTool process and manually start OVRService (located in C:\ by default Program Files(x86)\Oculus\Service\). After this, restart OculusConfigTool.

Setting up Oculus Rift DK2 drivers

Along the top strap for attaching the helmet there is a paired wire for connecting to USB and HDMI. USB can be connected to both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 - but please note that some have had problems with powering the helmet. If this happens to you, try switching the helmet to a different type of USB. It is also recommended to remove the option to turn off power in USB connectors in the device manager to save energy. HDMI is connected directly or via a DVI to HDMI adapter, which is included in the kit. There was no visible difference in the operation of the helmet from the use of one or another connector.

Connecting the Oculus Rift DK2 camera

The USB and sync cable are connected to the side of the camera and to a small connector located on the helmet wire. Place the camera on the top of the monitor body in front of you, or in another place convenient for you. The recommended distance to the user is 1.5 meters. The camera has special mounts that greatly simplify the mounting process.

Once connected, the indicator on the helmet should light up. The orange color of the indicator means that the helmet is connected but is not receiving a video signal. The blue color of the indicator means that the helmet is connected and a video signal is being received. Next to the indicator there is an on/off button.

Setting up Oculus Rift DK2 software

Another important point. In our case, for some unknown reason, the helmet did not receive a video signal in the Direct HMD Access from Apps mode - but worked great in the Extend Desktop to the HMD mode. But according to the recommendations, it is the second connection mode that is preferable and many applications for the Oculus Rift helmet are launched only in it. Once your helmet and camera have been identified in OculusConfigTool. (The camera also has an indicator) you can launch a demo scene for calibration by pressing the "Show Demo Scene" button.

Demo for setting up the Oculus Rift DK2 helmet

Oculus Demo Scene - demo scene for setting up the helmet and camera. It is also the first VR impression of those who have just started using DK2. By launching the application you find yourself in 3D space - ceiling and floor blue(a square grid is applied to the floor). In front of you in the air is a panel with the OculusVR logo and the word “Start”. Having felt the mouse on the table and clicked on “Start” you find yourself at the desk, which is still in the same 3D space with a mesh floor.

On the table in front of you are many items: 2 potted plants, several sheets of paper, a pencil, a tin of drink (unmarked), a ruler, desk lamp, several cards scattered on the table and perhaps the most curious item - a house of cards. With the DK2's motion tracking camera, you can get closer to things on your desk and get a closer look. But do not forget that the camera has a limited viewing angle and therefore if you bend low enough, you can go beyond the tracking radius, which at first causes quite unpleasant discomfort. To avoid this, we advise you to move away from the camera to the maximum possible distance within 1.5 meters.

Having looked enough at the objects on the table, you will notice that new items have appeared on the panel with the OculusVR logo:

Position - allows you to choose your position relative to the desk in the virtual environment and the real world: Sit (Sitting) and Stand (Standing).

Camera Bounds - Activates the camera range boundary grid On/Off.

After you launched the demo scene and the helmet and camera worked correctly in them - initial setup helmet is completed.

Some tips to make using Oculus Rift DK2 easier. After you switch the helmet to Extend Desktop mode to the HMD and it will start working in extended desktop mode. We recommend changing the screen orientation for the Rift DK2 to portrait, since the default image is in landscape format will be upside down for you. This is due to the fact that the helmet uses a display from a mobile phone (Samsung Galaxy Note 3), which is designed for portrait scanning of the image.

We also recommend moving the screen location for the Rift to the extreme one on the left side. According to many reviews, this allows you to avoid mistakenly capturing the monitor display instead of the helmet screen when expanding to full screen. Make sure you run applications through the Direct to Rift EXE (if available) even when using the headset in advanced mode. Alternatively, you can run the demo in windowed mode, drag it onto the Rift screen, then press Alt + Enter or double-click the window title to expand it to full screen.

If the demo doesn't work, try one of the following:

    • Create a shortcut and add -adapter 1 to it.
    • Run the application as an administrator.
    • Running a "normal" EXE file.
    • By right-clicking and selecting "Open with Oculus Rift" (This item appears after Virtual installations Desktop).
    • Restarting the Oculus service manually or using the Oculus Service Manager ( additional program created by one of the users).
    • Create a shortcut and add -force-d3d11.

The factory manual is not the clearest source to find out Tohow to configure Dk2 after connecting to the computer. The alternative is this article, which clearly states step by step guide, with the help of which the user will do all the necessary procedures himself. To plunge into virtual reality you need to install drivers and customize the glasses in special program. Read more below.

    Installing drivers

You should immediately avoid any unofficial sites with drivers, because they contain high probability there will be viruses, which can lead to unpleasant consequences. There is only one official website - oculus.com.

First of all, you need to register on the site by going to the “ Developer" After successful registration, you can go to the “ Download", where 7 files will be waiting for you. There are three types of files intended for use in operating systems Windows and Mac:

    • Oculus Runtime– the same file that is needed for games. If your goal is to play, then download it;
    • Oculus SDK– needed only by software developers of these glasses;
    • Oculus Unity Tuscany Demo– demo of the game “Manor”.

There is also a file called Unity 4 Pro Integration, but it is needed solely for integration with Unity 4 Pro.

Download required file And run as administrator. When the drivers are installed, follow the program instructions - restart your computer.

How to Set Up the Oculus Rift Development Kit

If the installation is successfully completed and after the computer is restarted, the glasses indicator will light up. There are 2 color options:

    • blue – everything works smoothly and an image is sent to the glasses;
    • orange – the device is working, but the image is not displayed.

Is the indicator lit? - So, let's go to OculusConfigTool. This program should appear in the tray after reboot. In case of incorrect synchronization with glasses, you need to remove the application from the task manager and open OVRService from Program Files yourself, and then launch OculusConfigTool.

In the settings, you can create user profiles and select their height, as well as some other parameters that you can easily figure out yourself.

On next stage you need to go to " control/screen panel n", select Rift DK2 and change the orientation - choose portrait. Experienced users say that it is better to place the screen on the left, because in this position the likelihood of errors is less.

Here's all the information you need to know about how to set up oculus riftDk2. After all the procedures, you can explore virtual reality.
