For now, we must wait for confirmation from Apple of the final release date for iOS 11 – so far we have only heard “Autumn”.

Both beta versions will be continuously updated for testing, allowing developers and early adopters to test software before it becomes available to the general public.

Upgrading to the latest public version of the iOS 11 update will be easy and free. Downloading and installing one of the beta versions will be a little more complicated, and creating a developer account costs $99 per year (R6,000/year).

Apple's WWDC 2017 saw a ton of new features introduced for iOS 11, and it was hard to keep up with so much information! Below we provide a summary of each of the main functions. Many of them are focused exclusively on the iPad, but we'll discuss the features of the iPad, iPhone, and iPod here.

Updated app store

One of the biggest updates to iOS 11 is the App Store update. Launching the app will first take you to the Today tab, which is designed to help you discover new apps. You'll see new collections, a daily list focused on a specific theme, there's even teaching aids, which show how to do certain things in a new application.

The second new tab is called Games, and it's where you can find both new and popular games, as well as in-app purchases for games you already own, available to view and download directly from the App Store. You'll also see previews, tips, and videos under the Games tab.

Apps also get their own, similarly designed tabs for the rest of the content available in Apple's app store.

Control Center, Lock Screen and Notifications

The lock screen and notifications have now been combined into one screen, but a much more exciting change is the exciting Control Center and it's finally even more customizable.

It now brings all the features into one page with new sliders. There you'll also find 3D Touch to provide quick access to more settings and features that look like they'll make life a lot easier.

New featuresiMessage

The Messages app has been updated in iOS 11 with some new features including new box apps, as well as Apple Pay's new peer-to-peer transfer feature, which lets you pay contacts via iMessage and more.

The new Apple Pay feature still uses the TouchID sensor for the fingerprint scanner, and the money you receive will immediately go to your Apple Pay card, which you can use for future Apple Pay payments or to transfer funds to your bank account.

iCloud also has new Messages that automatically sync with all your conversations across all iOS and macOS devices.

Below we list all the rumored features that have not been confirmed (at least not yet!).

Dark mode

Users everywhere expected iOS 10 to have new mode Dark Mode, with a black background, which is much easier on the eyes at night. In fact, Apple announced exactly that, but with tvOS, and we're still waiting for dark mode for iOS.

In fact, Dark Mode was discovered in iOS 10, back in the first version of iOS 10 Beta 1, launched back in June, but it is still not unlocked. We're not sure why Apple bothered to add this feature if it didn't plan to enable it in the near future, but it's possible that beta testing revealed functionality issues that led to the feature being disabled.

Multi-user calls toFaceTime

According to a report from Verifier, Apple is said to be introducing a long-requested feature by iOS users in the iOS 11 update: the ability to make group calls FaceTime video is similar to services such as Skype. The report doesn't stop there either, adding that Apple is considering making the FaceTime app more social, including filters similar to those we've seen in apps like Snapchat and MSQRD, which have been huge successes.

It's worth noting that Apple released Faceshift in late 2015, a technology that can capture a user's facial expression and turn the face into a 3D avatar in real time. Could this technology be an integral part of the planned iOS 11 overhaul? We can only wait and watch. It's also worth noting that Verifier, despite the name, has a negligible track record in rumors with Apple and therefore you should take the rumor with a pinch of salt.

Multiple user accounts

Rumors suggest that users will be able to point their camera at an object and Apple's software will recognize it. The patent shows that Apple is considering a new feature that would allow users to see an indication at a glance whether their contacts are available for conversation and where they are located.

Dynamic keyboard with finger detection

Apple has been granted a patent covering dynamic keyboard placement on touch screens, causing individual keys to change their location in response to detecting the position of the user's fingertips.

The patent, titled "Finger Pointing Detection to Improve Typing," describes a concept in which typing "dynamically improves and automatically positions desired row keys on-screen keyboard under the user's fingers as his fingers hover above the surface. Reducing the need for the user to look at the on-screen keyboard while typing."

We wouldn't be surprised if the concept makes its way to a system-wide keyboard (albeit presumably as an option) in a future iOS update, although it appears to be aimed at tablets. Of course, this isn't the first iOS feature to be used on the iPad. The most famous example is probably the split-screen view added to the iPad with the launch of iOS 9.

And while the granted patent was published in November 2016, this is actually a ratification of the acquisition by Apple patent when it bought Automotive Technologies back in September 2014. Virtual keyboard Virtoft from Virtualoft uses a similar principle to enable touch input.

Slide to unlock device

Sound familiar? That's as it should be, because we've used this method to unlock iPhones and iPads in iOS 9 and every previous version of iOS. In its latest incarnation, this solution resembled the following:

In iOS 10, Apple got rid of the slide to unlock the device, changing the interface so that you simply press the Home button (while simultaneously launching the fingerprint scanner finger touch ID on Apple devices, which eliminated the meaning of the slide). But some users were unhappy with this decision, which led to a petition asking for the return of slide unlocking.

Will this put enough pressure on Apple (and this is where problems arise, since at the time of this article, the petition had 1,549 signatures, although we've heard similar sentiments from more people) to bring back slide unlocking in iOS 11? We don't think so. Apple fans have had problems with the interface before, especially in iOS 7, but most of us got used to the new solutions over time.

Changing cosmetic/aesthetic settings

There is a possibility that the iOS 11 update changelog will include radical new features to customize the system interface.

These changes include dynamically animated app icons that show, for example, your current location in the Maps icon or the current weather in Weather widgets. The ability to place shortcuts in any of the free grid slots on the screen, instead of iOS automatically sending the shortcut to the closest free slot to the top left edge of the screen. SmartWi-Fi

This solution includes features like prioritizing strong connections, but what we like most is the ability to automatically turn Wi-Fi on or off based on your location. The system remembers the location of known networks and connects to them, but when you leave the coverage area, it turns off Wi-Fi to conserve battery power.

Given the iPhone's recent difficulties in competing for battery life with Android flagships, smart wifi could be a great addition to iOS 11.

Access codes for one application orTouchID

Currently, you can lock individual documents in Notes, but not apps—you can either lock the entire phone or all apps. From a data protection point of view and parental controls, it would be very useful to block individual applications.

(It's possible to give an iPhone to a child and keep access to just one app using Access Control, sure, but that's a bogus feature that doesn't offer flexibility. For older kids, it might be a good idea to let them learn iOS by simply locking a couple of hardcore games and work papers behind which you would not want your child to see).

Ability to change video resolution in the application

One of the selling points of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus is the ability to record full-resolution 4K video at 30fps, as well as standard 1080p video at 60fps or 30fps. The only problem that the user faces is that there is no easy way to switch the resolution inside the Camera app, instead you have to exit the app, go to Settings - Camera to change the resolution.

In some situations, such as shooting in low light conditions, you need to reduce the frame rate (fewer frames - more light), and changing the frequency manually takes 10-15 seconds, far from perfect solution. We'd really like to be able to quickly change the resolution and frame rate, perhaps from within the Camera app. This is a simple change that users will greatly appreciate.

Moving on to photography, it would be nice to allow Apple to take and store photos in RAW format.

Favorites in the Contacts app

Another fairly simple change we'd like to see in the iOS 11 update is the ability to view and edit the list favorite contacts, which are currently only available in the Phone app. It makes sense to access your favorite contacts from the Contacts app, and we don't understand why Apple hasn't added this feature yet. Sometimes you need easy access to contacts for other reasons than for calls!
