• Comparison of apple watch models 2 and 3. Main differences between Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch Edition

We've tested both devices to help you decide which one deserves the right spot on your wrist.

The launch of new smartwatches on Android Wear is in doubt, Pebble has left the market, so the new smartwatch models from Apple and Samsung are the most prestigious and advanced timepieces that are now vying for consumer attention.

Smart series watch 2 from Apple are more focused on fitness and have significantly improved in terms of software. Samsung is not far behind and has packed the Gear S3 with a ton of features.

However, the difficult question is: which of these watches is worth spending your money on? There are tons of details about them in the reviews, but if you want to understand how Samsung Gear S3 and Apple Watch 2 actually work, our comparison will help you make the right choice.

    Design and models

Watch design will always be a very subjective thing. If one person likes something, the other may look at it askance. Comparing the Watch Series 2 and Gear S3, it's hard to find more contrasting devices.

The first thing that catches your eye is the opposition of shapes: square clocks versus round ones. Apple has decided to move in the direction of a distinctive phone on the wrist, while Samsung offers classic design, familiar to most consumers. As you use this watch, it becomes obvious that it is the most beautiful of its kind and has the best touch screens. Apple has gone to great lengths to design the most attractive square watch ever. The Gear S3 also looks very decent, although they are of course larger in size. Its design is more suitable for street activities, while the Watch Series 2 has a more sophisticated, understated style. That is, if you don't like wearing large watches, we recommend that you pay attention to the Series 2.

The only question that cannot be answered in the case of both smartwatches is the build quality. The Series 2 case is made of stainless steel (also available with a ceramic finish). Likewise, the Gear S3 is made from expensive materials to give the device the appearance of a traditional timepiece. If you're worried about bands, the good news is that both smartwatch models allow you to easily change bands, and both original and third-party bands are supported.

As for the durability of the devices, Samsung tested the Gear S3 to military standards, so their watches can withstand severe temperature changes and other powerful external influences. Like Samsung, Apple doesn't reveal specific details about the durability of its watches, but the Watch Series 2 offers something that the Gear S3 really lacks - excellent water resistance, to the point where you can even swim with it.

Now let's talk about the available model options. Samsung offers 2 versions of the Gear S3: Classic and Frontier. In terms of design, the Gear S3 Classic follows in the footsteps of the Gear S2 Classic, while the Frontier version is more aggressive and rugged. Also the Frontier version is different LTE support. Apple, for its part, offers a wider selection of models. The Series 2 watch is available in two sizes, 38mm or 42mm, and in a variety of different finishes. The Apple Watch Edition has a ceramic case and also has Apple versions Watch Hermès and even Series 2 Nike+ for runners.

    Digital winding and rotating bezel

All smartwatch manufacturers face one major challenge - finding ways to provide intuitive control of a small touchscreen wrist device.

Apple decided to give modern features a traditional winding crown, so you can use it to perform various actions, such as rewinding notifications or cycling through applications. Samsung has taken a different approach by installing a rotating bezel around the watch face, which allows you to switch between Gear S3 menu screens or adjust the volume while listening to music.

The smartwatch control system is constantly being improved. The rotating bezel has proven to be a very useful feature, so Samsung is adding new features to it, making it even more convenient. Apple's approach to reconfiguring the winding head is by no means bad, but it's still not entirely convenient to operate. different functions, which are assigned to it. We like both of these approaches, but we tend to agree that Samsung's solution was better.

    Operating systems and applications

Tizen or watchOS? Both Apple and Samsung have decided to use their own operating systems optimized specifically for smartwatches. The Gear S3 runs on Tizen OS 2.3.1, just like the Gear S2. Overall, this system is very easy to operate and all its elements are perfectly configured to work on the watch.

Notification support is also impressive, and this applies to both proprietary and third party applications. The only downside is the meager selection of applications, especially compared to Apple.

The Apple Series 2 watch runs on watchOS 3, which is being developed very actively and has a lot done right. A lot of new features, improvements and applications have been added to this system, for example Emergency SOS (Samsung has an analogue). Unfortunately, the Series 2 watch is still difficult to control when compared with the same iPhone or iPad, although they certainly turned out better than the first Apple Watch.

Notification support is one of the benefits of the Series 2, and it's easier to make calls and respond to notifications than the Gear S3. The one thing you don't have to worry about with the Series 2 is app selection. Third party companies are already starting to take advantage of the benefits of the Series 2, such as the built-in GPS or swim tracker.

    Health and fitness

Apple and Samsung have done great job so that their smartwatches have maximum functions for fitness and sports. This is especially true for Apple. The Series 2 features built-in GPS and a waterproof design that lets you take advantage of new swim monitoring modes. The Series 2 also features a heart rate sensor, pedometer and vibration that protects the user from a sedentary lifestyle.

Samsung has also added GPS to its smartwatches, so you can finally stop taking your smartphone to workouts. To monitor your sports activities, the Gear S3 also includes a heart rate sensor, barometer and speedometer. Smartwatches can automatically recognize approaches during workouts, count steps, and the Gear S3 is an excellent Fitbit replacement.

Since the accuracy of smartwatches is usually questionable, we were pleasantly surprised by how GPS performed on the Series 2 and Gear S3. Although Apple device picks up the signal a little faster. But the heart rate sensor malfunctions in both smartwatches, especially during too intense workouts. The highlight of the Series 2 is the swim monitoring, which works fantastically.

The fitness trackers on both smartwatches work great, but at the heart of it all is the software that makes their most interesting features possible. Apple's Workout and Activity apps are very nice looking, but they're a bit limited. Samsung's S Health app is regularly updated and improved, so it's definitely more suitable for sports.

    Autonomy

In this regard, Samsung is the absolute winner. If you need long battery life, then go for the Gear S3. The larger body means there's room for a battery that can last up to 4 days on a single charge. This is impressive considering the size of the screen and the abundance of built-in sensors. In our experience, the Gear S3 lasts up to 3 days, but if you disable some functions, you can increase battery life. The Series 2 watch (whether 38mm or 42mm version) lasts a day longer than the first generation, but the inclusion of features like GPS and others significantly reduces battery life.

Both devices offer decent power saving modes, although they greatly limit the functionality and then you will just have a watch, not a smartwatch.

You should also charge their batteries only with original chargers, which you will always have to keep nearby or carry with you in your bag.

    Let's talk about prices

If we compare the cheapest versions of Watch Series 2 and Gear S3, then you have to overpay slightly for Apple smartwatches. The price difference increases sharply if you look at the more expensive versions - the ceramic Watch Edition will cost an impressive $1,500 more. Either way, whichever smartwatch you choose, both the Series 2 and Gear S3 will cost you about the same as you'd spend on a traditional Nixon or Tissot watch.

    Verdict

The second generation of Apple smartwatches overall turned out much better than the first. Done good job above the battery, we liked the design, the watchOS system continues to develop, and as a fitness tracker the Series 2 is generally super.

However, that doesn't mean there aren't any reasons to choose the Gear S3. The rotating bezel offers more features than the digital winding of Apple watches, the capabilities of the S Health app are very impressive. At the same time, we continue to be disappointed by the meager selection of applications in the Tizen OS, although this itself operating system works pretty well. If the autonomy of a smartwatch is more important to you and if you like large sizes, then the Gear S3 is definitely your choice.

We all loved these smart watch Apple Watch, but even the most devoted fans of this manufacturer are already confused about the difference between series 1, 2 and 3. If external differences practically none and the first series is similar to the third, then the most important changes lie inside. And the characteristics may differ significantly. Let's try to figure out what the difference is and which watch is right for you.

To clearly and clearly see what the difference is, we will create a table where we compare 1, 2 and 3 series according to their characteristics. And then we’ll tell you about all the differences in more detail.

As we can see from the table, with each series the watches became better, faster and smarter. If in the first watch there was not enough processor power and the watch could freeze, then in the second series they made a dual-core processor.

    External smart view Apple watch:

The iWatch Series 1 was released in four colors (Silver, Gold, Rose Gold and Space Gray). 2 types of sizes - 38 and 42 mm. The body is made of aluminum.

Apple Watch Series 2 has become a little thicker (almost a millimeter), the color scheme remains the same. But in this series, in addition to aluminum, stainless steel and ceramics are used. And also a sports series with a bright design appeared - Nike + with special sports functions.

Watch Series 3. Same case with the same colors. Similar to Watch 2 in design and color.

    Apple watch display.

The first and second and even the third series did not undergo significant differences in the display. All watch series use OLED technology. Screen brightness. In Apple Watch 2nd and 3rd generations, the screen became twice as bright - 1000 nits versus 450 in Series 1. The display resolution did not change.

    Water protection.

Series 2 and 3 can be safely immersed in water to a depth of 50 meters and nothing will happen to them. In the third series, water training appeared, so you can safely go to the pool and set records in 50 and 100 meter swims. But don't forget to click on the special drop icon to activate the waterproof mode. After water procedures, the watch itself will push out excess water. The very first model could only withstand splashes and is afraid of immersion in water.

    Processor and memory.

In the first watch, the main drawback was a rather weak processor, which was developed by Apple and was called S1. This is a single-core processor with a frequency of 520 MHz. Its power is barely enough for applications and comfortable work. In the second and third series, this drawback was taken into account and a new dual-core processor was created, which was called S2. 512 MB of RAM turned out to be enough for any tasks and applications, so both in the first and in the second watch the amount of RAM is the same. Due to new features and more resource-intensive applications in the third series, the memory capacity was increased to 768MB.

    With GPS or not?

Apple Watch 1 is completely dependent on the iPhone and therefore they used data from the smartphone. Apple has equipped the second and third Watch GPS module- you can now track the distance traveled directly on the watch. Feel free to go for a walk and leave your phone at home. Running with a smartphone is also not convenient, so GPS is a very important improvement in series 2 and 3.

    Battery in a watch.

This is the main drawback of perhaps all watches and the Watch is no exception. Fit big battery in a small case is not possible. The battery life of the watch will only last for a day, and if you do not charge it before bed, you will only be able to use the watch for a couple of hours the next day. In the second and third series there is a slight increase in battery capacity. Most likely, this is due to the advent of GPS. It consumes some additional energy, and in order for the second and third generations of watches to work no less than the previous one, the battery had to be slightly larger.

What is the difference between Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 3?

Most recently, Apple presented the 3rd generation watch - let's take a look at what the company has been working on for the whole year and what has changed since the Watch Series 2? This time we will do without a comparison table, because Apple in the 3rd generation of its watches also added a model with a built-in SIM card, which means we have to compare as many as 6 “different” devices! Considering the fact that the dimensions have remained virtually unchanged (a couple of millimeters does not count), we will focus exclusively on the most important differences between Series 3 and Series 2.

So, what's new in the 2017 Apple Watch 3?

Is there a version with LTE now? this is the most important difference. True, it is absolutely useless for us - this function does not work in Russia yet, although telecom operators are already thinking about introducing it in Russia. The fact is that the watch uses a built-in SIM card - our operators do not yet provide such services and capabilities.

    1. Design element. By the way, the version with LTE has one fundamental difference in terms of design - the scroll wheel now has a red dot! A distinctive feature of the Watch Series 3 LTE is the red scroll wheel
    2. CPU. Of course, Apple Watch Series 3 received new processor S3 (which is said to be 70% faster than the Series 2), as well as a special microchip for wireless communication - W2 (similar to the one used in AirPods).
    3. RAM. The RAM value also increased to 768 MB (in the second generation it was 512 MB).
    4. Internal memory. For the version without LTE, nothing has changed, the size internal storage is still 8 GB. But Series 3 with a SIM card will receive an increased volume - 16 GB.
    5. Barometric altimeter. Now the watch can count how many floors you have ascended or descended.
    6. Bluetooth 4.2. The blue tooth version has become a little higher (in Series 2 - Bluetooth 4.0). What's the plus? Data transfer speed increases. Considering that a lot of data is first downloaded to the iPhone, and then via Bluetooth to the Apple Watch, this will obviously not be superfluous. Nothing else has changed - these are the same good Apple Watch Series 2. With water protection, GPS, promised operating time 18 hours (with mixed use), etc. So which Watch should you choose - first, second or third generation?

Comparison of Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 3.

Actually, after all these comparisons, this is the most important question. Considering the fact that Apple releases new models approximately once a year, now we will find out what watch to buy in 2017-2018?

Apple seems to intend to confuse its customers with complex model range, which is worth a lot to understand. 3 generations of wearable devices have already been released, each with several versions developed. Now let’s look at the differences between smart watches of different series and find out which apple watch to choose based on appearance and capabilities.

All Apple Watch series come in two sizes: . In the second option, the screen diagonal is larger, more powerful battery and higher cost by $50. The 42 mm version will hold a charge longer, but will cost more and will look more massive on the hand. The sleek version is neater, but the battery life is 2 hours less. The choice between the two models depends on the buyer's priorities. For convenience, Apple has made a life-size template of both versions on its website so that everyone can print it out and try it on.

There are 3 models of Apple Watch.

    1. Apple Watch Sport– the most budget option, although the functions are not inferior to more expensive models. A distinctive feature is bright sports straps of different colors, built-in functions for training.
    2. Apple Watch is the basic model, made in a classic style.
    3. – the device is the most expensive, the body is made of an alloy of precious metals. It emphasizes status and is more of an accessory than a gadget.

What Apple Watch is better choose – 38mm or 42mm?

The manufacturer's website also presents the Apple Watch Hermes, but this is essentially a basic model, only with different straps. Of these 3 options, which one to choose is a matter of taste and wallet.

The first and second series of devices. What improvements have been made?

It’s worth saying right away that the second version of wearable devices has already been discontinued by the company, so comparing the first two representatives is almost pointless. But still, the series 2 smartwatches have gone on sale, and there are still some leftovers, so let’s look at the differences between generations and find out which one is wiser to purchase for use.

    Case design

The Apple Watch Series 1 module was made of aluminum, and the representative of the second generation boasts a choice between ceramics, aluminum and steel. The screen is now covered with sapphire glass, which protects the display from scratches and chips. Mechanical damage is no longer so terrible; users note that even after a fall, the case remains intact and unharmed.

    Screen brightness

The second difference is that the Watch Series 2 has higher screen brightness (450 Nits versus 1000). This is a step forward, because previously in clear weather it was practically impossible to distinguish anything on the display, but now the text remains readable, and the image is clear and of high quality. The color of the picture has become more saturated. And the changes did not affect battery life in any way, this is a clear advantage.

    Moisture protection

Series 1 watches are protected from splashes of water, but the main thing here is not to overdo it. You can wash your hands while wearing a watch; getting caught in the rain is also not a problem, but it’s better to stay away from water. Apple Watch 2nd generation is characterized by increased resistance to moisture: it can withstand immersion to depths of up to 50m. You can already take a shower in them, swim in the pool, and swim in the sea. IN smart gadget There is even a special mode, by setting which you can monitor your results: the number of strokes and laps completed. At the end of the water procedures, just press a button, and excess moisture is pushed out by a sound wave.

    Built-in GPS

The difference between the first and second generations is the built-in GPS sensor in the 2nd case. The gadget will save the history of the route covered and automatically transfer this data to the iPhone the next time it is synchronized.

    Battery

The second representative is distinguished by more capacious battery, allowing you to hold a charge for up to 2 days. The predecessor only lasted 1 day of battery life.

Apple Watch Series 2 vs Series 3

Now let's compare series 2 and 3 and analyze the advantages of the latter. Apple Watch series 3 was released in 2 versions: with and without LTE, this is the ability to make and receive calls without the participation of an iPhone. These 2 models do not differ in anything else, let's look at the difference with the second generation.

    1. LTE support in one version. This function will be useful to residents of the USA and Canada; for technical reasons it is not available in Russia.
    2. The models are made in aluminum, ceramic and steel casing. But the last 2 options are varieties of the LTE version, which is not sold in Russia. It turns out that in this country only aluminum module design is available.
    3. The processor has become more powerful, performance has increased by 70%, RAM has been added, now its volume is 768 MB. In the version with LTE, the built-in storage has also increased – up to 16 GB, previously it was 8 GB.
    4. Bluetooth has become newer – 4.2. This increases data transfer speed and makes syncing with iPhone instant.
    5. In the second series, a barometric altimeter appeared; the device counts the number of floors climbed. Also, when traveling in the mountains, the traveler will know to what height he has risen.

In September 2016 they announced by Apple two watches: Apple Watch 2 and 1. Is there a big difference between them and is it worth replacing the “old” watch with a new one? The first model was slightly updated, it received more powerful processor S1P. The second model has undergone major changes. We compare the two models to figure out whether it’s worth buying a new product.

Apple Watch 1 and 2 differences in appearance don't have. The watch case material is aluminum, silver color. Differences between the models: back cover and dimensions. The first and most striking difference between model 1 and model 2 is the back cover. In the earlier model it is made of composite material. The new product is made of ceramic glass. There are Apple Watch sizes: 42 and 38, both generations. How to distinguish rulers from each other? The difference between the models can be felt in the dimensions.

The Apple Watch Series 2 line is thicker than the Apple Watch one in the display size of 38 mm. Their thickness is 11.4 mm. The thickness of the 42mm watch is the same for both versions. The Series 2 models weigh more for the 38mm and 42mm watches than the Series 1 watches, respectively: 28.2g versus 25g and 34.2g versus 30g. It's hard to tell the difference by touch.

    Screen

The difference in screen brightness between Apple Watch 1 and Apple Watch 2 is more than double. The indicators changed from 450 to 1000 nits. Well one model is different from another on a sunny street if you want to know the time. The brightness of the display also allows you to distinguish the original from the fake. There are a lot of fake gadgets on the market now. The original two models (1 and 2) have screen protection made of ionic glass. The surface is resistant to damage. There is an anti-reflective coating. The screen brightness is adjusted by a light sensor on both models.

Performance, comparison of Apple Watch 1 and 2

Both devices are equipped with dual-core processors. Have more old version processor S1P, the newer one has S2. Therefore, if you compare Series 1 VS Apple Watch Series 2, the latter will be faster and their graphics quality will be higher.

The earlier model of Apple Watch has splash protection. The new product has complete moisture protection. You can swim and dive in them to a depth of up to 50 meters. This can be done for half an hour. Another advantage of the new product is GPS. The predecessor does not have it. But Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, motion sensor, accelerometer are all present in both gadgets. The battery life of both gadgets reaches 18 hours with one fully charged. This time is enough to keep the device in use throughout the day. Price for more new model will be higher by about 10,000 rubles.

Comparing the Series 1 and 2 models shows that the difference is not so great that it is worth paying that price for it. In short, the new model has a more powerful processor, increased brightness, GPS, and full moisture protection. Otherwise, the watches do not differ from the “first” ones.

In order to make a choice in favor of one model, ask yourself: for what purpose will the watch be used? If these are simple sports (fitness) activities, then you can get by with a watch from the first line. If it is important for you to receive not only useful gadget, but also status, it is better to choose the second line. If you are a keen runner, then the Series 2 is for you. They allow you to skip your smartphone while running. The Apple Watch Sport is perfect for athletes and people interested in sports.

Comparing Apple Watch and Apple Watch Sport

The Sport model belongs to the basic version of the watch. It is the cheapest of the products. Watch refers to the main line, it is aimed at middle category citizens. Depending on the customization options, the price of the watch varies greatly. There is an Edition class , expensive line, precious metals are used in the manufacture of the case.

The weight of the Sport line at 38 and 42 mm corresponds to 25 and 30 grams. For the Watch line, the corresponding weights are 40 and 50 grams. Sport watch case made of metal (anodized aluminum). It comes in different colors: gold, silver, space gray, rose gold. The display is protected by ionized glass Ion-X . But the main line comes in the colors space gray and classic steel. The body is made of steel (stainless). The gadget is protected by sapphire crystal. The case materials will differ visually in terms of shine; the Sport has a matte tint.

The watch is powered by the watchOS 2.2 operating system. The screen parameters and resolution of the watches are the same. Wireless communication carried out using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. A wide variety of straps are available. After all, a watch is not only a functional thing, but also a stylish accessory.

Externally, the Sport series looks more appropriate with sports items. Silicone straps will not interfere during training. You can monitor your body parameters using built-in sensors and pre-installed applications. If you are actively involved in your body, then give preference to “sports”. Comparative characteristics between episodes in in this case will help you understand for what purposes you need a smart watch.

Watch Sport VS Samsung Gear S3

How is Apple Watch different? Differences between Apple Watch and weights “on the face”. But are these differences really that big? The watch is protected from moisture and is not afraid of dust. IP68 moisture protection standard. You can dive to a depth of 1.5 m and spend up to half an hour in the water. The watch has shock resistance and resistance to temperature changes (from -40 to +70).

The gadget is thick, and this causes inconvenience if you wear clothes with sleeves. When worn, it causes a feeling of heaviness and cumbersomeness. The set includes a silicone strap, when worn, the hand under it sweats. The gadget runs on Tizen OS . She provides fast work no freezes. The downside is that there are few programs for the OS. You can control the watch using the bezel (a ring around the screen that rotates). Touch screen. Two buttons on the side give the “do” and “cancel” commands.

The original gadget has a screen Super AMOLED. He has high level brightness, low power consumption, deep colors and wide angles review. Diagonal size 1.3 inches. Resolution is 360 x 360 pixels, with a density of 278 by 1 inch. The watch has many sensors that collect all kinds of statistics (steps, heart rate, etc.). The gadget is perfect for people who are interested in active sports.

The device is equipped with NFC and MST . If you disable energy-intensive applications, the gadget can work for up to 4 days. They are charging wirelessly. To do this, you need to put the watch on a special charging station. It is small in size (slightly more hours). The charge reaches 100% in two hours. This watch good analogue Apple's Sport series. Apple or Samsung Gear S3 is up to you to decide. Comparing these models will help you understand which watch is right for you.

    • Series 1 – 5 mm;
    • Series 2 and 3 – 4 mm.

We are talking about standard versions of watches here. Edition is slightly (a fraction of a millimeter) thicker.

    Display

The screen resolution in all versions of the watch is the same - 272x340 pixels for 38 mm models and 312x390 pixels for 42mm. The difference lies in the brightness of the display. For series 1 it is 450 cd/m2, and for subsequent generations it is already 1000 cd/m2.

In all versions the screen is executed according to OLED technology and spreads the intensity of pressing (Force Touch). Safety glass– Ion-X. In series 3 its strength was increased. The series 2 Edition has sapphire glass.

    Autonomy

In all generations of watches, the battery provides up to 18 hours of battery life.
