• How to set up a NETGEAR JWNR2000 Wi-Fi router with a PPPoE connection. How to install and configure a WiFi router - from A to Z. Step-by-step instructions

    In this age information technology The Internet is available in almost every home, and the vast majority of people are familiar with its benefits. But here's how to do it wifi network Not everyone knows about home, although many will find this information useful. In this article you will learn how to connect wifi at home, why this is needed and what needs to be purchased for this.

    Advantages of Wi-Fi technologies

    Most often, the question of setting up a Wi-Fi network is asked by people who use mobile devices: laptops, tablets, smartphones and Wi-Fi enabled phones. The use of this technology allows you to get rid of a lot of wires, provide complete freedom of movement and access to the network for many of the most different devices. Wi-Fi is a way to organize both a wireless local network and a way to access the Internet from all devices on this network: that is, you can use it to network games, data exchange on the local network and Internet distribution, if connected. All this makes Wi-Fi a convenient solution for the home, which ensures the high popularity of this technology.

    Required equipment

    Let's figure out how to make wifi at home. Let's start with the list necessary equipment. Using Wi-Fi possible only if you have devices that support it: tablets, laptops and computers with a Wi-Fi adapter. But if there are no such devices, then this can be fixed. And you don't have to buy it at all new computer, you can only buy a Wi-Fi network card. This solution is also possible for laptops. Such network cards can be connected via different interfaces: PCMCIA, PCI and others. IN lately gained popularity Wi-Fi adapter s that connect via USB, they are small in size, connect easily and conveniently, and fit almost all devices, regardless of their type, be it personal computer, laptop or netbook. Often network adapters require installation of drivers for them; as a rule, these drivers are located on the disk included with the device. Installing them does not take much time and does not require high qualifications.

    Wi-Fi networks can operate in point-to-point mode, that is, connect two devices (for example, a computer and laptop) without an intermediary. This solution allows you to use common network resources(folders or printers, for example), and the Internet. But it is not very convenient, since when one device is turned off, the network disappears - for example, if you turn off a computer connected to the Internet, then the second one will also lose the ability to use world wide web. Therefore, an additional device is often used - a router (also called a router).

    This device is capable of supporting Wi-Fi network and Internet connection without depending on client computers. That is, by installing and connecting a Wi-Fi router, you can truly take advantage of all the benefits wireless network. We'll tell you how to set up a wifi router at home. First you need to choose a suitable place. The criteria here are as follows: the router must be connected network cable(via which we are connected to the Internet) and the router signal should penetrate all rooms of the apartment. Routers come in both external antennas, and with internal ones. It is believed that the signal of the former is much more powerful, which allows them to be used even in houses with thick walls. Of course, the router needs not only a network cable, but also electricity: it is worth considering this point when choosing a place for it. If there are power surges in the house, then it is advisable to install surge protector to protect important equipment from damage.

    There are routers various models, but the principles of their connection and configuration are approximately the same. First, you need to connect the router to the Internet, since now it is it, and not the computer, that will be connected to the provider’s network, so we’ll connect it to it power cord, which was previously used in the computer. There may be several connectors on the router; the cable from the provider is connected to the one designated as WAN. You can connect a computer or laptop to the connectors labeled LAN to configure the router.

    Setting up the router

    The graphical interface of each router model may differ, for detailed information It's best to refer to the instructions. We will study the most important points, which you need to pay attention to. First, we will need to go to the router's IP address, for example, http://192.168.1.1 - this address is indicated in the documentation for the device. In the device's web interface we can configure the Internet connection - this is the most important thing, right? Modern routers support various types connections, but the most popular among providers is the PPPoE connection. For such a connection, we need to indicate the login and password that were provided to us by the Internet provider when concluding the agreement. It is often necessary to specify the DNS server - this information is also provided by the provider. Some providers issue IP and provide Internet access automatically, without any special settings. In this case, we only need to select the “Automatic IP” item in the “WAN Connection” field. The names of the settings may vary, of course, but only slightly.

    An important point in setting up a Wi-Fi router is issuing IP addresses. It can be dynamic, when each connecting device is assigned an IP automatically, or manual, when all settings are entered independently. In the first case, you need to activate the DHCP server function of your router.

    Access restriction

    If you are learning how to install wifi at home, then you will definitely have to face the issue of limiting access to the Internet. After all, all connections occur without the help of a cable, so it is more difficult to control them. The following options are possible:

    • encryption and password access restriction;
    • restricting access by MAC addresses of client (i.e., connecting to the router) devices;
    • absence of any restrictions.

    If you do not use any restrictions on connection and access to the Internet, then everyone within the signal radius of the router will be able to use your Wi-Fi. Of course, your neighbors will be grateful to you, but there are a number of negative aspects: a decrease in your speed and possible traffic interception. Therefore, specialists in computer security It is advised to still limit access. Filtering by MAC addresses is setting a list of devices that can connect to the router. This solution will not be convenient if you need to provide access temporarily - for example, to guests. Therefore, the most popular way to restrict access is encryption. There are three main types of Wi-Fi encryption: WEP, WPA, WPA2 - they are arranged in order of increasing security and complexity of the algorithms used. WEP technology is outdated, there are ways to quickly hack networks built on this algorithm, so using WEP is not recommended.

    In this article we tried to talk about the benefits Wi-Fi technology. Now you know how to choose wifi for your home and you can use all the possibilities of wireless networks by limiting your network from outside users. Setting up a router is not a difficult process.

    The Internet has firmly entered our homes, on the Internet we can now find out everything we need, watch our favorite programs, TV series, films, news online, download the software we need, and most importantly, exchange information with other people. Now there are a huge number of devices in the world with the ability to connect to the Internet. Now every family has several devices that require access to the Internet. And most of them work over the network.

    The question arises: how can we organize our home wireless network? A Wi-Fi router will help us with this. A router, or in Russian, a router, allows us to connect several devices at once to one Internet channel, both via wired and Wi-Fi. Many people think, but connecting, installing, configuring a Wi-Fi Router is difficult and beyond their ability to an ordinary person! This is not true, after reading this article you will understand that everything is simple! Let's begin.

    Where to start setting up a Wi-Fi router.

    Let me make a reservation right away: in this article I will not talk about any specific model of router, here we will talk about general scheme Wi-Fi router settings. If you are interested specific model, go to the “router setup” section and in the list of articles, select the one that applies to your router. Also at the end of the article I will provide links to setting up the most popular models.

    Before we start setting up, we need to connect to the computer and laptop patch cord(This is a small wire with two plugs at the ends, which should have come with the routers), you will learn more about this in the article “Connecting a router”. You also need to configure your computer (laptop), which you can find out here. Now you can proceed directly to setting up your Wi-Fi router. It is not possible to describe the detailed configuration of all router models in one article. Therefore, I will give you a setup diagram for any router.

    Setting diagram
    1. To get started, open any browser (Mozilla, Opera, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer), write the router address in the address bar. must be written in the instructions or on back cover router. You can also read the article “how to find out the router address.”
    2. Then an authorization window will appear, enter “Username” and “Password”, usually the default is admin/admin. But there are models where this is not the case, so we look at back panel The router should contain the name and password for your device. Enter and press “Enter” or “Submit”
    3. After you get to working page, you need to set up the Internet first. Find the word “WAN” on the page (in some routers you need to go to setup mode or manual mode, and only then we look for WAN). Click on it.
    4. On the page that appears, you need to select “connection type”. Then enter the provider settings. And be sure to click Save.
    5. Our next step will be setting up Wi Fi. On the same page where “WAN” is located we will find the inscription “Wireless”. You need to specify the network name (SSID) and enter the Wi-Fi key (select the encryption type “WPA2-PSK”). Save again.
    6. Then you need to Reboot the devices. All setup will be completed here.

    Please note that this is just a wiring diagram so you have an idea of what you will encounter. Complete and detailed setting You can find out the Wi Fi router here.

    After setup, you will need to install the router.

    Router installation

    In order to understand how to install a Wi-Fi router in an apartment (house), we need to decide whether we will use only Wi-Fi or whether we will also connect a wire. If we connect a wire, it is best to install the router near the computer so that the included wire is sufficient.

    For Wi-Fi only users, you can leave the router near the computer, or attach it to the wall in a place convenient for you.

    For a two-story house, choose a location approximately in the center.

    For beautiful models, I recommend simply placing it on a bedside table or table.

    If the router's power is not enough for stable network coverage Wi-Fi apartments, home or office, there is a need for additional devices. There are three ways to enhance weak signal main router: install additional antenna, repeater or another router. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages; let’s take a closer look at the third option.

    How to set up a router

    To configure the router, connect a computer or other device with a web browser installed to it:

    • You can connect your computer with a cable by connecting the PC’s network card to a free LAN port of the router;
    • You can connect to the router via a wireless Wi-Fi network using a laptop, tablet or smartphone.

    By default, the wireless network is assigned a name (SSID) identical to the name of the router model, and access to the distributed Wi-Fi network is not protected by a password.

    After establishing a connection with the router, open it on your computer or connected wireless device web browser and address bar enter the router's IP address. For example, for a TP-LINK router the address will be: http://192.168.0.1

    Illustrations taken from Settings TP-LINK router TL-WR 1045, other manufacturers' control panel looks different, but general principles, abbreviations and terms will be the same.

    Entering the router's IP address in the browser's address bar will open access to the control panel

    Correct IP address, login and password required to enter the control panel are indicated on the sign attached to the bottom of the router.

    The IP address, login and password of the control panel are indicated on the nameplate on the bottom of the router

    The login and password indicated on the sign apply only to the control panel, but not to the wireless network distributed by the router. After entering your login and password, you will see home screen, which displays information about the device status and provides access to menu items for setting modes.

    Do not change the factory settings of the router unless necessary. After making changes to the router settings, reboot the device.

    Two ways to connect routers

    Routers are connected into one local network either by cable or wirelessly. It is recommended to use devices from the same manufacturer.

    Cable connection

    Cable " twisted pair» ( UTP cable) is laid between the main and additional routers. In the main router, the cable is connected to the LAN socket, and in the additional router - to the WAN socket (this socket is highlighted in color and is sometimes called Internet). With this connection, the additional router will be for the main one network device, and the main one for the additional one will act as a provider, distributing the Internet and providing a dynamic IP address.

    Before installing an additional router, consider how the cable will be laid and carefully measure the length of the future cable channel. When purchasing a cable, buy one meter longer than measured cable channel, and ask the seller to immediately crimp the ends of the cable into the connectors. If the cable channel runs outside the premises and is exposed to natural influences, then purchase a cable with a reinforced sheath.

    Advantages of the method:

    • reliability and stability of the cable connection;
    • easy setup of both routers;
    • The installation location of the additional router is not limited to the wireless coverage area of the main router.

    Disadvantages of the method:

    • the need to purchase and lay cables;
    • When moving the router, the cable will have to be moved to a new location.

    Configuring routers when connected by cable

    If the main router is already configured to work with the provider and there are no complaints about the work, then you do not need to change anything in the settings.

    Make sure DHCP function in the main router is enabled for automatic distribution of IP addresses on the local network. The start and end IP addresses do not need to be changed.

    Setting up an additional router

    It is recommended to immediately reset any changes made to the router settings to those preset by the manufacturer. To do this, turn on the router, find on the back panel Reset button, press and hold for 5–7 seconds. To protect against accidental reset of settings, the button is hidden inside the case and can be pressed through the hole using a needle or an unbent paper clip.

    An example of the location of the reset button on the back panel of the router: the button is hidden inside, only the hole for pressing is visible

    In the additional router, two settings are checked and set:

    Making changes to the additional router’s own IP address allows you to avoid conflicts between identical addresses on the same network

    After changing the router's IP address, to re-access the control panel, enter the new address in the browser address bar.

    There is a cable connection option in which the cable is connected to the LAN port of an additional router. This option requires complex setup and does not provide any advantages over a WAN port connection.

    Wi-Fi connection

    Advantages of the method:

    Disadvantages of the method:

    • relative complexity of setup;
    • slowdown in wireless network speed.

    The main router receives the Internet from the provider and distributes it via the wireless network LAN1; the additional router receives the Internet wirelessly from the main router and distributes it via the LAN2 wireless network

    Configuring routers when connecting via Wi-Fi

    When two routers are connected on a local network via a wireless channel, a “bridge” connection is used, in English Wireless Distribution System (WDS), designed specifically to expand the Wi-Fi coverage area.

    Understanding Bridged Connectivity (WDS)

    When installing this type of connection, the main router operates in standard mode, and the additional one performs the function Wi-Fi booster, receiving and distributing the signal further.

    To connect routers in bridge mode, you need to establish a permanent (fixed) communication channel between them and specify the physical addresses of the connected devices in the settings. To set up a “bridge”, both routers are turned on, the main router is configured in advance for the provider, receives and distributes the Internet, and the settings of the additional router are pre-set to factory settings by pressing the Reset button.

    Configuring the main router for WDS mode

    We change the automatic broadcast channel selection mode to a fixed channel mode (for example, to the 11th channel).

    Setting a fixed channel number prevents the router from automatically scanning the airwaves and selecting the least loaded channel. Therefore, if other wireless networks are operating nearby, you may have to manually experimentally select the least loaded channel or use special program to search free channel. The channel number must be changed simultaneously on both routers - the main and additional ones.

    Setting up an additional router for WDS mode

    On home page In the router control panel, the “WDS Status” line should display “working.” This means that the additional router has connected to the main router and is distributing the Internet.

    Creation complex network requires knowledge and experience. If you are confident in your abilities, use our instructions. If you doubt your abilities, it is better to ask for help.

    Connect Wi-Fi at home- the most common task today for regular user. If you do not delve into some of the subtleties associated with network security, installing a Wi-Fi router just seems complicated. In practice everything is very simple.

    First, let's figure out which Wi-Fi router to choose. Network equipment is divided into several categories. ADSL Wi-Fi routers are used to connect using ADSL technology via telephone line. This technology is used less and less, and there is no fundamental difference in the settings. Wi-Fi routers connected via Ethernet are, in turn, divided into several categories. There are bridges (gates), Wi-Fi routers, Wi-Fi access points, Wi-Fi repeaters (repeaters). There is no fundamental difference between them. Special configuration of the router turns one type of equipment into another. Thus, many models of Wi-Fi routers will help act as a repeater, and the repeater can be configured as a Wi-Fi router. The Wi-Fi repeater receives a signal from one of the Wi-Fi routers and transmits it further. This expands the coverage area home Wi-Fi network, intensifies wifi signal and “dead zones” are eliminated. Wi-Fi gates transmit Wi-Fi signals over long distances. Using two Wi-Fi gates, you can install a Wi-Fi network in neighboring houses, and using special directional Wi-Fi antennas, you can establish a connection via Wi-Fi over a long distance (up to 10 kilometers). Configuring a router for use as repeaters or gates is uncommon. But it is often necessary to connect via Wi-Fi laptop, desktop computer or make it so that you can connect via Wi-Fi from an iPhone or other mobile phone. For these purposes, regular access points or configuration as a Wi-Fi router gate or repeater are required. Based on this, it is easy to conclude that setting up a router, if you need to connect Wi-Fi at home, is practically no different from setting up a gate or repeater. Provided that you configure the Wi-Fi router specifically for your home Wi-Fi network for normal use.

    It is usually important not only to connect Wi-Fi at home, but also to ensure high speed data transfer.
    For comfortable work you need standard G, which provides speeds of up to 54 Mbps. In most cases, this is sufficient for comfortable browsing on the Internet. To the lucky owners high-speed access on the Internet, for gamers and those who download a lot via torrents, it is advisable to use a more advanced standard. Even thorough Wi-Fi setup-router will not help if an outdated standard is used. To use the full potential of modern high-speed wireless networks, the N standard is desirable. The table below provides a comparison of standards to connect Wi-Fi at home to required speed:

    Standard Speed Average data transfer rate
    802.11b 11 Mbit/s 5 Mbit/s
    802.11g 54 Mbit/s 25 Mbit/s
    802.11a 54 Mbit/s 25 Mbit/s
    802.11n 200+ Mbit/s 100 Mbit/s

    The D-Link DIR-620 router supports the 802.11n standard. Installation Wi-Fi D-Link router DIR-620 is standard and almost no different from installing a Wi-Fi router from other manufacturers. Using the example of setting up this router, we will show how connect Wi-Fi at home fast and simple.

    To configure the router D-Link DIR-620 you need to follow following instructions:

    1) Connect the router to the network. Connect the Internet cable to the “Internet” port of the router. Connect the cable connecting the router to the computer to one of the LAN ports on the back panel of the router, and connect the other end to the computer’s network card.

    2) Open any Internet browser and type http://192.168.0.1 in the address bar.
    Go to the entered address. A web interface will be displayed through which you can configure the router. Fill in empty fields: in the "Username" field enter admin, in the "Password" field - admin. Click on the "Login" button.

    3) Next, open the “Network” section, the “Connections” subsection and select the connection called WAN.

    4) After this, a page will open showing the connection settings. Click on the IPoE connection type and check the "Allow" box under the type. The same checkboxes should be next to the items “Obtain an IP address automatically”, “Enable IGMP”, “Obtain DNS address server automatically", "NAT", "Firewall". Save changes made.

    Let's start setting up a Wi-Fi connection:
    1) In the "Network" section, select the "Wi-Fi" subsection. The "Basic Settings" option appears. Make sure that next to the line "Enable wireless connection" is checked. There should be no checkmarks next to the "Hide access point" item. Select the "auto" channel, the maximum number of clients is 0. Accept and save the changes made.

    2) Click on the “Security Settings” subsection and select “WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK mixed” from the “Network Authentication” drop-down list.

    After they open additional settings, in the “PSK encryption key:” line, enter the password that will be used to connect to your wireless network. The password must contain at least 8 English characters. For maximum security, when creating a password, it is recommended to combine small and capital letters, symbols and numbers. When you have finished entering your password, accept and save your changes.

    This router setup is shown as an example. As you can see, connecting Wi-Fi at home is not difficult.
    Installing a Wi-Fi router simple and painless. But if you care about your security, if you want to prevent your personal data from being “lost” and intruders not getting into your computer, we recommend that you contact specialists who will quickly and efficiently do everything to ensure that the router configuration meets the highest network standards security.

    Helpful Tips:

    • Removable antennas are convenient because they can be replaced with more powerful ones or unnecessary ones can be removed if one antenna is enough for a stable signal within the room.
    • If the signal is weak, the speed is low, and the connection is constantly breaking, try moving the Wi-Fi router 5-10 cm in any direction. Sometimes this simple movement helps to significantly improve the quality of reception and corresponds to a strengthening of the Wi-Fi signal.
    • Choose a password that is at least 10 characters long, consisting of letters in different cases, numbers and symbols at the same time.
    • When preparing to buy a Wi-Fi router, check out reviews online about existing models. Pay special attention to information about the operation of the router in various modes, when high temperatures and under intense load.
    • Minor savings when purchasing a router can lead to large losses of time later when installing and operating the device.
    • Before purchasing a router, check with your Internet provider which protocols your future router should support.
    • Always try to update your router to the latest official firmware. Visit the official website of the manufacturer of the router model you have chosen and check the availability of new firmware and their compatibility. New firmware improves the stability and speed of wireless devices.
    • If your Internet speed suddenly drops and sites open slowly, you can check the speed of your Internet connection by visiting the free web service http://speedtest,net.
    • Most problems caused by network failure can be easily resolved by simply rebooting the equipment.

    Set up Wi-Fi at home often - big problem. If you don’t want to cut off your phone number to your provider, follow simple instructions and everything should work out. IN best case scenario, setting up a router out of the box will take about 15 minutes. Let’s spot it?

    Important!For example, we took a router TP-LINK TL-WR840N . Program interfaces for setting up different models TP-LINK routers may vary slightly (not to mention routers from other manufacturers). Look for the menu items you need, and don’t be alarmed if yours is different from the photo instructions.

    Most quick way to configure Wi-Fi router - not the one with the disk. Although installation disk and is included with each router; this installation is not available for everyone. We'll go the other way - let's see how to configure the router manually.

    In order to successfully connect the router, you need to know the type and parameters of your Internet connection:

    • IP address;
    • subnet mask;
    • login;
    • password.

    This information must be contained in the agreement for the provision of Internet services. There is no contract or the contract strangely does not contain any of the points listed above? We call technical support and find out.

    Connecting a router

    1. We connect the router to the network (the power cord is included - is there one?).
    2. Press the ON button. on the router (many routers are also turned on directly from the outlet, but in vain). In our case, both the power adapter and the button are in place.
    3. In the box we find a network cable. At one end we connect it to the router (there are many ports on the router, you need the one labeled “LAN”,necessarythe port is also usually highlighted in a different color from the others). Others - to the PC network card.
    4. You need to enable automatic acquisition of an IP address. You can do it like this:

    Router administration

    1. On a PC, open any browser (we used Google Chrome).
    2. We write the router address in the address bar (for Wi-Fi TP-LINK routers this is 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1).
    3. In the window that appears, enter your username and password. If in technical documentation or the bottom of your router does not indicate otherwise, standard routers use:
    • login: admin
    • password: admin

    If you did everything correctly, this page is in front of you. The menu is always in English. On the left is the menu, in the center is the content of the selected item on the left, and on the right is an explanation and the most important settings items.

    How to set up a Wi-Fi router at home

    Don’t be afraid: you don’t need to fumble around in every section with an English-Russian dictionary at hand. All you have to do is tick 3 boxes.

    Chapter Network, paragraph WAN. From the list, select your connection type - Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE or PPTP (see contract). In our case it is PPPoE. Each type of connection requires tuning. Using the prompts below, complete the settings on your router and clickSave(bottom of page).

    PPPoE

    Dynamic IP

    Static IP

    PPTP

    Important!The provider is sometimes bound to the MAC address network card(a typical phenomenon for Dynamic and Static IP), so we additionally go to MAC Clone and press Clone MAC Address. This is in case you did everything as stated above, but for some reason nothing worked.

    Setting up a Wi-Fi network

    We have almost figured out how to connect Wi-Fi - all that remains is to configure the Wi-Fi network. So let's go toWireless- Settings.

    We find our location in the list, come up with a name for this network (it’s better not to be clever with the name, but you can’t leave it “as is” - if it matches the name neighbor's Wi-Fi problems may arise).

    Among other things that are on this page, the following menu items may be useful:

    • Enable Wireless Router Radio - enables/disables Wi-Fi;
    • Enable SSID Broadcast - enable/disable the visibility of the Wi-Fi network, if you disable this item, this network will not be displayed when general search Wi-Fi networks(via SSID only).

    The latter is not a way to hide from your neighbors, so don’t rush to be clever with secrecy.

    Setting up Wi-Fi network security

    We remain in the sectionWireless, go to the submenuSecurity. Optimal choice parameters from the list - in the photo below. You only have the Wi-Fi password. We recommend that you write it down in the contract for the provision of Internet services (so that you don’t get lost).

    Connection and operation

    You can, of course, also set up a local network and change administrator passwords (the ones that are admin/admin by default on all routers). But these are already bonus points. The majority of users can start working after rebooting the router. You can do this by clickingREBOOTin the message that pops up at the bottom of the settings page.

    Now we connect the cable from the provider (through which the Internet comes to your apartment) to the INTERNET port, highlighted in color and labeled. Other ports are designed for wired connection of PCs and laptops that have problems with wireless.

    Now you know how to connect a router in 15 minutes. By the way, how long did your timer count down?

    P.S. Indicators

    Not all routers are built the same, but keep in mind:

    • indicator Systemshould flash, not light up;
    • Power- just burn;
    • the middle indicators are blinking - data is being exchanged, the indicators are on - there is no network activity, off - there is no connection;
    • Internet- lights up when there is a connection, flashes - data is being exchanged, doesn't light up - check the cable connection.

    If you need a signal amplifier or, say, a Wi-Fi adapter, you can choose from the link below wireless equipment for data transfer for any occasion:http://price.ua/catalog454.html.
