• Shooting on a sunny day. Hardware platform and performance

About 2 weeks ago I purchased an LG Nexus 5X as my main smartphone, presented by by Google at the end of September. However, unfortunately, Russian-speaking tech bloggers did not pay due attention to this device. Let's figure out if everything is really that bad and the Nexus line will die soon?

    Video review

    Equipment

Let's start, as usual, with unpacking. The box is made of durable, white cardboard. We will find in it brief instructions, explaining what’s what, the device itself, USB Type C to USB Type C charging cord, a microfiber cloth and a paper clip. Everything, unlike the older brother 6P, Type C charging was not brought to standard USB, so if we want to connect the smartphone to to a regular computer(does not apply to Macbook 12 users), you will have to buy the cable separately. The device comes in two versions – 16 or 32 GB.

    Design

Let's move on to why we are actually gathered here - to the gadget itself. The design of the 5X can be praised or criticized, but both those who praise and those who criticize agree that, like last year, it is incredibly practical. The device is almost entirely made of soft-touch plastic, with the only exceptions being the speaker mesh and the bezel around the fingerprint scanner (we'll talk about it later).

The volume and unlock keys are now on the right side, and not on different ones, as was the case with its predecessor. I agree, the decision is very controversial, but you can get used to everything. On the left side there is a lonely slot for one Nano SIM card.

The speaker is on the front side. It may seem like the Nexus can reproduce audio in stereo, but unfortunately, that's not the case. Below is the main speaker, and above is the conversational speaker. To the left of it is the front camera, and below it is the light sensor, which I must say works quite well. By the way, unlike the usual “five”, the frames of the 5X have noticeably increased, but it seems to me that this does not greatly affect how the device fits in the hand - the new Nexus is still comfortable for me.

On the back panel we will find a fingerprint scanner, the main camera with dual flash and laser autofocus, as you may have noticed, it protrudes significantly from the body, but this does not bother me at all, the Nexus inscription and the LG logo. The thickness of the gadget is 7.9 mm and the weight is 136 grams.

I really liked the design of the device, it has that zest, that Nexus feature, thanks to which fans will be delighted. Well, the fact that the body is made of plastic, in my opinion, is even good - it’s practical, and for those who need something “richer,” Google and Huawei released the 6P, but that’s not what we’re talking about now. By the way, the device comes in three colors: classic black and white, or stylish, fashionable, youthful “mint”.

    Display

What you notice right away after the design is the display. It has a diagonal of 5.2 inches and a Full HD resolution of 1920x1080. The pixel density is 424ppi, and all this miracle is covered protective glass Gorilla Glass 3. I was very pleased with the brightness of the display, both minimum and maximum. As I already said, the sensor automatic adjustment brightness works very correctly. But in reality, all these numbers are not important. The important thing is that the Nexus's screen is really high quality, not that I'm praising it too much, but I literally want to lick it. Phew, let's finish about the screen here. Oh, no, we won't finish. I forgot to say that the viewing angles here are also amazing. That's all for sure.

    Camera

Here Nexus, oddly enough, is in complete order. In my memory, there are only two Google phones that have everything in order with the camera - Nexus 5, and then only after an update, and 5X. But everything is great right out of the box. Let's go over technical specifications, and then I will show you examples of taking photos and videos (spoiler: they turn out a little better than amazing).

The front camera is equipped with a 5-megapixel sensor and a lens with an f/2.0 aperture without autofocus and its own flash. The pictures it takes are standard: quite enough for selfies on Instagram.

The main camera is equipped with a Sony IMX377 sensor with a resolution of 12.3 megapixels, a pixel size of 1.55 microns and a lens with an f/2.0 aperture. The camera is equipped with laser autofocus, which does its job well, and a dual flash, but there is no image stabilization function here. By the way, transferring control to third-party applications using the Camera2 API is fully supported here, right down to the ability to save pictures in RAW.

The video camera can shoot Full HD and 4K 30 frames per second, it is possible to record slo-mo video at a speed of 120 frames per second and a resolution of 720p. Unfortunately, in the standard Google camera I did not have the Full HD setting at 60 frames per second, from which I can conclude that the Nexus 5X does not do this, which is a pity.

However, I must say that I am very, very pleased with the camera. According to my personal feeling, it shoots at the level of flagships, and in some parameters even leaves them behind. Well, to confirm my words, here are examples of photos (I don’t think it’s worth posting photos in full resolution, but if someone really needs it, there are quite a lot of them on the Internet):

    Autonomy

Here things are normal for the Nexus 5X: under moderate loads (camera, social networks and browsing via 4G Internet and a little YouTube), the gadget lives exactly from morning to evening - no more, no less. The average is about 5 hours of screen time. However, the function of notifications on the switched off screen “eats up” the charge very much, we will talk about it later, however, I immediately recommend turning it off :) The smartphone has a 2700 mAh battery, there is an option fast charging, thanks to the adapter for as much as 3A, the device charges from 0 to 20% in 10 minutes, from 0 to 80% in 1 hour and from 0 to 100% in just 1.5 hours. I won’t even comment on the convenience of this technology - it’s obvious.

    Sound

The sound from the main speaker of the Nexus 5X is ordinary, and there is no other way to describe it. The volume is enough, you won't be able to miss a call, however, if you decide to listen to music through it, then be prepared for the lack of bass. It should be noted that nothing “creaks” or “squishes”, and this is already pleasing.

However, the days when people listened to music through a smartphone speaker are long gone; we are increasingly using quality headphones, right? And with this, the Nexus 5X is in complete order. The sound is of high quality, remains clear at any volume level, the reserve of which is sufficient. The bass is fully present, you can increase it low frequencies in the settings.

The earpiece speaker also does not have outstanding characteristics, although how can it differ at all? speaker? It is there, the sound does not distort, the only thing is that I would like to have a larger volume reserve, however, this is my personal quibble.

The microphone in the Nexus is quite decent; it copes well with its task of adding an “epic” commentary to a video and talking to someone on the phone.

    Specifications

What's under the hood? of this device? And under the hood we have 2 gigabytes RAM, 16 or 32 built-in, 6-core Snapdragon 808, 5.2 inch IPS display with a resolution of 1920x1080 and a density of 424 ppi, supports Multitouch up to 10 clicks. Graphics core Adreno 418, 12.3 MP main camera with autofocus and the ability to record video up to 4K (3840×2160), front camera with a resolution of 5 megapixels, a non-removable 2700 mAh battery, dimensions 147 × 72.6 × 7.9 mm, weight 136 grams.

Owners of some Galaxy will say that 2 gigabytes of RAM in 2016 are no longer enough, but let me remind you: there are no unnecessary “touchvises” and other incomprehensible things, therefore, two gigabytes will definitely be enough for you, don’t doubt it. About the Snapdragon 808 I will say that it is an excellent processor, especially for the money that is being asked for the Nexus 5X. And it’s good that they didn’t install Snapdragon 810, well, you already know why.

Thanks to this filling and excellent optimization, the 5X does not heat up and does not slow down. There are of course bugs, however, updates that come out every month make it better and better. The device runs on Android 6.0.1, however, I couldn’t resist and already installed Android N, a review of which you can take a look at. That's the beauty of using Nexus devices. In Antutu, the device scores 46k parrots. You can already start saying that new flagships are gaining 120 thousand, but I assure you, they will never work and get new features like Nexus. And I’m scared to even imagine what’s going on at 6P.

    Sphot

If you don’t mind, I suggest just quickly going over the innovations of Android N, and then talk about another, quite interesting topic.

So, Android N has a new, redesigned notification shade, the notifications themselves have also changed, and now you can interact with them without going into the application. The settings have also been redesigned, a “hamburger” menu and a System UI Tuner item have appeared, which is responsible for Android setup to your taste. Traffic saving features and support for multiple languages were also added, however, the main innovation was the multi-window mode. It seems to me that Google implemented it in the most in a convenient way. We open the application, click on the multitasking button, hold down the application we need and a white area appears at the top where it should be moved. That's all, all that remains is to select the second application from the list of running ones.

Well, now let's talk about what I consider a more interesting topic for discussion. These are Google services. They are just everywhere here: notes - Google Keep, messages - Messenger, cloud storageGoogle Drive, photo gallery – Google Photos, music - Google Play Music. And it's incredibly convenient! Firstly, everything is always at hand. A huge plus Google services is its cross-platform: both on iPad or Mac, and on Windows. Well, thanks to the fact that everything is in the clouds, 32 or even 16 gigabytes will definitely be enough for you.
Also, I would like to note that thanks to the software, the device lives for a very long time. I’ll tell you in more detail what kind of “Doze” mode this is and what it is eaten with. When the device is on Android Marshmallow or N lies motionless and without charging, after an hour it goes into Doze Mode. Shutdown mode, when almost all applications stop consuming the battery. But there is no need to worry about missing an important notification; the developer can choose the level of importance of the notification and push it anyway.

    Features and ease of use

Here we come to one of the most interesting sections our review. Here I’ll talk about the features that captivated me in the Nexus 5X. Let's start with the banal - USB Type C. This is both a plus and a minus. Of course, it is convenient to insert the cable from either side, however, if you forget this very cable, or want to connect your smartphone to a computer with a regular USB, then difficulties will arise.

I won’t go too far and tell you about fast charging. It is present here and I must say, it is very convenient. While you don’t have it, it seems that you don’t need it, but as soon as it appears, you immediately understand that charging a smartphone from 0 to 100 in a little more than an hour is very cool and often helps out.

Next is the OK, Google function. Nexus 5X is constantly listening to you and ready to respond at any moment. This would be very convenient, if not for one thing: in order for Google to answer you, you need to unlock your smartphone. That is, the device is turned off, you ask it something, it understands everything, but to answer, enter the password or place your finger on the scanner.

Now we come to the most interesting part. Fingerprint scanner. It is located at the back and after 2 days of use you understand why. It's really comfortable, your finger literally fits into the dimple. I won’t even talk about the speed of work. She's great here. Perhaps the fingerprint scanner is something without which I can no longer imagine any other smartphone. This feature really appealed to me and I don’t understand people who for some reason don’t use it, because it’s really convenient.

Next are active notifications. You pick up the device and the black and white screen lights up, showing notifications. However, this feature didn’t suit me at all: firstly, the screen here is not Amoled, which means that the gadget spends a lot of charge. Well, secondly, their display does not always work correctly - for example, when walking, the phone often turns on in your pocket, and this eats up the charge percentage even more, therefore, this function I turned it off almost immediately.

In terms of ease of use, I will say that the device is not very large, although many criticize it for the large frames around the display, it seems to me that it fits perfectly in the hand.

Well, one more thing that I will note in the usability section is that the device does not get very hot, and believe me, this is really important. That's it, let's move on.

    Accessories

The Nexus 5X has a problem with this in the CIS countries. 2 poor cases from third-party manufacturers and an expensive official one - that’s all you can buy. However, let's not forget about Aliexpress. There I ordered a decent case, which I like and it really decorates the device. If you're interested, here it is link, (here is the second case) on it (don’t be afraid, not a referral).

    Pros

Ok, well, let's highlight the advantages of the device. Of course, first of all, this is bare Android, fast work cool camera, an excellent fingerprint scanner, branded features and stable updates. Also, I like the design, but it can be attributed to both pros and cons, I’ll explain now.

    Cons

The disadvantages include the lack of a USB Type C adapter, 2 gigabytes of RAM, the lack of a slot for Micro SD and a 64 or 128 gigabyte version. It is also worth noting the bugs that come with the update - on Android 6.0.1, almost all Nexus 5X owners experienced a dull sensor while charging. However, this has already been fixed in Android N. The design of the device is also considered by many to be flawed, as there is no metal or glass. But for me, practicality matters, so I still considered the design a plus.

Well, there’s one more problem that has bypassed me so far – the upside-down camera. The fact is that LG had to rotate the camera module in order to fit it into the body, but not all software manufacturers took this into account and sometimes photos turn out upside down. But if you use Orthodox Google Photos and Snapseed, then everything is fine.

    Bottom line

What do we have in the end? And we have an excellent device on bare Android and branded features. Is it worth upgrading from Nexus 5? Definitely. At least because of the autonomy and the fingerprint scanner. Of course there are a couple of disadvantages, but for me personally they are all minor.

Well, that’s all for me, comment, and of course, be smarter - use gadgets.

Traditionally, Google time releases a smartphone from time to time, demonstrating a new version of its own operating system on it. Typically, such devices are distinguished by their quality and good optimization of both hardware and software. True, Google does not produce smartphones on its own: for this it partners with well-known brands. In 2015, the Nexus 5X was released in collaboration with LG. This is the younger model, which is the successor to the LG Nexus 5. The older model of 2015 is the flagship Huawei Nexus 6P.

A distinctive feature of the Nexus series devices is the guaranteed ability to upgrade to current version OS. In this review, we will try to find out whether the LG Nexus 5X H791 was a success, whether its hardware is up-to-date, and whether its purchase is a worthwhile decision.

    Specifications LG Nexus 5X H791

In terms of technical aspects, the Nexus 5X can be characterized something like this: it is far from a flagship, but it cannot be classified as an average level either.

    Design

Appearance The device is simple, but the body is practical and the assembly is good.

The material of the product is plastic, there is a soft-touch coating, the device lies confidently in the hand and does not try to slip out.

The rear camera has a slight bump. There is a fingerprint sensor under the camera.

The case comes in three colors: white, black, mint.

Based on the screen diagonal, the dimensions are not the most modest: 147x 73 x 7.9 mm.

The reason for this is that the upper and lower frames are too pronounced. The case weight is 136 g.

    CPU

The hardware platform is represented by a powerful 6-core Qualcomm processor Snapdragon 808 MSM8992. It consists of 4 Cortex-A53 cores, and 2 Cortex-A57 cores. Maximum frequency can reach 1.8 GHz. The graphics accelerator is Adreno 418. Snapdragon 808 was used in the 2015 flagship - LG G4. Naturally, on at the moment flagships are equipped with much more productive solutions. But is so much needed for quick and stable operation gadget?

Needless to say, the smartphone copes well with any task: from the simplest to running resource-demanding games. The interface simply “flies”, work in the browser and others typical applications- a pleasure. Having tested the smartphone in synthetic dough Antutu performance, we get a score of 62 thousand points.

    Memory

The amount of RAM is 2 GB. Alas, in 2016 the reality is such that even state employees are equipped with two gigabytes of RAM, not to mention devices in the mid-price segment. The cost of the Nexus 5X is far from the average, so we can safely say that there is not enough RAM here. Although there are no complaints about the operation of the smartphone, everything works quickly and very smoothly. Google's proprietary software optimization is evident.

Internal memory maybe 16 or 32 GB eMMC 5.0. The situation here is this: before purchasing, you need to carefully calculate for what purposes the gadget will be used. After all, expansion free space using an external drive is not possible. In principle, the available 10.6 GB out of 16, when used rationally, can be enough for applications, user data, and even a capacious game can fit. For those who like to “live large”, this may not seem enough.

    Battery

A non-removable battery with a capacity of 2700 mAh is responsible for autonomous operation. Alas, nothing supernatural or unusual happened in terms of autonomy. In mixed use mode, the battery holds its charge predictably - for one daylight hours. You can extend it for a day using the energy saving mode, as well as a gentle backlight level.

Video playback time from internal memory at an average brightness level reaches 7 hours 45 minutes. In the browser the battery will last 5 hours, and in games - 3 hours 40 minutes. (with backlight brightness 50%). Thanks to fast charging support, the battery can be charged with a standard charger from 0 to 100% in 1.5 hours.

    Camera

The photography capabilities of the LG Nexus 5X are quite impressive. The main Sony IMX377 module can take pictures with a resolution of 12.3 megapixels. The size of an individual pixel is 1.55 microns (this is larger than the size of a regular pixel). This has a positive effect on the quality of pictures, since the matrix is able to capture more light. The photomodule received a diaphragm f/2.0, dual flash, and laser focusing. The video camera is capable of recording videos with a resolution of 4K UHD (3840 x 2160), with a frame rate of 30 FPS.

The quality of the resulting images is simply excellent. The fact that in good lighting the frames turn out to be detailed, with correct color rendition and excellent sharpness is quite standard for many flagships. In this case, if there is insufficient lighting, the camera simply puts the competitors on their backs. Yes, the photos are not as cool as during the day, but the detail of objects is much higher, compared to photographs with more expensive smartphones. Even if you take a picture in almost complete darkness, the sensor still “manages” to capture the outline of the object.

The front camera with f/2.0 aperture can take pictures with a resolution of 5 MP and record videos in FullHD. At the same time, we can note the quite decent quality of the resulting photographs and videos.

    Display

The display diagonal is 5.2 inches. The resolution for such a diagonal is quite high - FullHD (1920 x 1080). In this case, the pixel density is 423 PPI. The type of matrix used is IPS. The screen in this model is good in almost all respects: the image is of high quality, with excellent color rendition, and the brightness and contrast indicators are at a decent level. When hitting straight sun rays The picture is still readable. This is achievable not only thanks to a good reserve of maximum brightness, but also to the presence of a high-quality anti-reflective coating. The screen is capable of accepting up to 10 simultaneous touches, and is covered with abrasion and scratch resistant Gorilla Glass 3.

    Network capabilities and data transfer

The device has only one slot for a SIM card, Nano-SIM format. In addition to standard 2G and 3G networks, it is possible to work in fourth generation networks (LTE Cat.6). GPS with A-GPS and GLONASS are responsible for navigation. For wireless transmission data you can use dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth version 4.2. There is also an NFC module.

A connector is used for charging and data transfer. USB Type-C, USB 2.0 standard. Moreover, the smartphone comes with a cable with a Type-C plug on both sides: to connect the device to a PC, you will have to separately buy the appropriate cable. Connecting external peripherals is possible thanks to OTG support.

    Sound

The main multimedia and calling speaker is located under the screen. The sound is ordinary, unremarkable: the lower frequencies are not pronounced at all, and the volume could be higher. When listening to music on headphones, everything changes for the better: both the volume and sound quality are at a decent level.

    Software part

Initially, the smartphone runs on Android 6.0 OS. A clean system, no junk or third-party applications, no shells - the classic Nexus is there. The system works stably and without any complaints. Users can count on updates to the latest software version over a long period.

    Peculiarities

    1. Availability of an event indicator;
    2. A USB Type-C connector is installed, which is still not very common in smartphones, not counting flagships;
    3. The camera's sensor is so sensitive that it can capture the outline of an object in almost complete darkness.

Pros and cons of LG Nexus 5X H791

    Pros:

    • Not a bad display;
    • Great camera;
    • Fresh and highly optimized OS.

    Cons

    • 1 SIM card;
    • There is no slot for a memory card;
    • Mediocre main speaker;
    • The frames above and below the screen are too large.

Who is a smartphone suitable for?

Definitely for people who always want the latest OS on their gadget. And also for those who like to take photographs using the “point and shoot” principle and get excellent results. But admirers of the optimal ratio of price, quality and functionality the smartphone is unlikely to impress.

Our review of the LG Nexus 5X H791 smartphone

The review turned out to be somewhat contradictory, just like the LG Nexus 5X H791 itself. You can endlessly admire the capabilities of its camera, and enjoy all the software “benefits” with a light hand from Google. But the amount of RAM, the lack of a slot for a flash drive and a second SIM card, as well as the price of the issue can put you in a stupor. However, for some these shortcomings may seem insignificant. In any case, the device turned out to be interesting. Returning to the question of its relevance - yes, it can still be bought in 2016. And at the time of publication, the device had dropped significantly in price compared to the prices at the start of sales, which were equal to 400 USD.

Many users and industry journalists around the world consider the 2013 Nexus 5 to be the best in the lineup. This model perfectly combined the then top-of-the-line filling, neat design and affordable price. Last year's Nexus 6 boasted characteristics and appearance, but its dimensions and cost were, to put it mildly, not for everyone.

In this year Google released two models at once. The older model, represented by the Huawei Nexus 6P, just like last year’s device, has a large display and a price at the level of flagships from A-brands. The second smartphone can be called the successor to the 2013 model. The LG Nexus 5X is quite compact, and powerful hardware and a relatively low price make it a contender for the title. people's smartphone 2015.

    Packaging and equipment

The packaging of the LG Nexus 5X is compact and neat, according to the established tradition of image and technical information are applied not to the box, but to a kind of apron made of cardboard.

The delivery set includes: smartphone, charger, documentation, opening clip SIM tray and a sync cable. The latter has both plugs of type C; to connect to a PC, the user will have to buy a separate cable.

    Appearance and ergonomics

The design of the smartphone is deliberately simple. The body is made of plastic with a soft-touch coating, and the front is covered with Gorilla Glass 3. The dimensions of the Nexus 5X are small for its screen diagonal; with a weight of 136 grams, the smartphone feels light. Controls, connectors and camera module are conveniently located.

Like the older model, the Nexus 5X is equipped with a fingerprint scanner, located under the main camera. This arrangement cannot be called successful; firstly, a smartphone lying on the table cannot be unlocked. Secondly, some skill is required in order to put your finger into the scanner without looking. Very a good decision is the ability to launch the camera via double click on the power button.

    Screen

LG Nexus 5X is equipped with a 5.2-inch screen with a resolution of 1920*1080 pixels. There are no questions about the quality of the screen; the brightness and contrast indicators are at good level, and color reproduction feels more natural than on AMOLED screens.

An effective anti-glare layer allows you to use your smartphone even in direct sunlight. Touch screen detects up to 10 touches simultaneously.

    Hardware platform and performance

The positioning of the device imposes some restrictions, including on the characteristics. The hardware platform is a top-end, but not the most powerful SoC from Qualcomm: Snapdragon 808 (MSM8992), and only 2 GB of RAM. The system-on-chip includes two “strong” Cortex-A57 cores, four “weak” Cortex-A53 cores and an Adreno 418 video core. Internal memory can be 16 GB or 32 GB; unfortunately, there is no memory card slot. In the younger version, 10.6 GB is available for user needs.

In AnTuTu v6.0, the smartphone scores 62,392 points, and in the Geekbench 3 singlecore test – 1,205 points. Practical performance is at the expected high level and is sufficient to solve any problems. Some specialized publications note a noticeably slower speed GUI in comparison with the Nexus 6P and even the Nexus 5, explaining this with data encryption enabled by default. IN real life, if you do not compare devices head-on, problems with response speed and interface rendering are not noticeable.

    Cellular communications and interfaces

The smartphone works in LTE networks including lanes: B3, B7, B20 and B38 – i.e. supports all frequencies used Russian operators cellular communications. List of supported wireless interfaces includes: Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, Bluetooth 4.2 and NFC. The wired interface, despite the Type-C connector, corresponds USB standard 2.0.

    Battery and autonomy

Installed in smartphone non-removable battery with a capacity of 2700 mAh, fast charging technology is supported: from 0% to 100% the battery will be charged in just an hour and a half (from 0% to 75% in 50 minutes). Unlike its predecessor, the Nexus 5X does not support wireless charging. The smartphone's autonomy is average; in mixed operating mode, the Nexus 5X will work from morning to late evening with 3.5-4 hours of screen activity. Testing in standard operating modes did not show anything unusual.

Note. Testing is carried out in the appropriate modes according to the following method: – listening to music on headphones maximum volume with the screen turned off; – viewing 720p video from the device memory at 50% backlight brightness and maximum sound volume in headphones; – active browsing (constantly opening new tabs, actively scrolling pages, etc.) via Wi-Fi at 50% backlight brightness; – 3D games (Real Racing 3) at 50% backlight brightness.

    Cameras, photo and video quality

The main camera of the LG Nexus 5X is a fairly large 1/2.3” sensor with a resolution of 12 MP, covered by a lens with an F2.0 aperture and an equivalent focal length of approximately 28 mm. IN system camera absent manual mode, but the corresponding API allows third party application access any settings.

In conditions with sufficient natural light, the Nexus 5X camera allows you to take pictures with high level detail and a relatively wide dynamic range. Software sharpening sometimes produces too much sharpness. CLICKABLE! On the left is a photo of the LG Nexus 5X, on the right is Apple iPhone 6s Plus:

In HDR+ mode, the dynamic range becomes even wider, while details that were previously either overexposed or underexposed appear in photographs. This mode recommended for use not only in high-contrast scenes, but also in any difficult shooting conditions. CLICKABLE! In conditions of insufficient or artificial lighting, the smartphone camera showed its best side: most details are preserved, noise reduction works very delicately, and the white balance is almost always accurate. The result becomes even better if you activate the HDR+ mode. CLICKABLE! The Nexus 5X's panoramic shooting mode is well implemented. Photopano in most situations does not have gluing artifacts or exposure problems, the frame has good sharpness throughout the entire field, and the final image has a resolution of more than 40 megapixels. CLICKABLE! Above is a panorama taken on an LG Nexus 5X, below is a panorama shot on an Apple iPhone 6s Plus:

The 5-megapixel front camera is covered by a lens with an F2.0 aperture and an equivalent focal length of approximately 26 mm. Can capture video in FullHD resolution. Photos taken with the front camera turn out very good. CLICKABLE!

The smartphone records video in a maximum resolution of 3840*2160 pixels at 30 fps with stereo sound. For the most part, there are no complaints about the picture quality, except that the dynamic range could be wider. When shooting handheld due to the lack of optical stabilization The image most often turns out jerky. There is a quadruple slow motion mode in HD resolution at 30 fps and with sound.

    Sound quality

When looking at the front Nexus panel The 5X may seem like it has two external speakers, but it doesn't. The only ringing speaker is located under the screen; it plays uninterestingly and quietly, and the sound is almost completely devoid of low frequencies.

Google Nexus 5X is another newcomer in the segment of premium smartphones with low cost like Moto X Pure Edition and many others.

The Nexus 5X aims to attract users not only with its new Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS, but also with one more item that will make most people happy: .

The price itself is a huge driving factor, but the gadget will have to attract an even wider audience through other features, since we are quite spoiled by such a large number effective and inexpensive phones premium class.

    Design

    Noticeably modest style

The Nexus 5X has opted for a smaller, thinner design that's easy to use with one hand thanks to its size and 70.04% display-to-body ratio. It is also worth noting the weight, which is only 136 grams.

Honestly, the design is not worthy detailed description. The smartphone has a simple, plastic body with rounded edges and a contrasting color back panel. The only difference is USB port Type-C.

You may love it or hate it, but ultimately many companies are going to phase out the traditional microUSB that is widely used on many devices. USB Type-C cables are reversible, so it doesn't matter which side you plug into the port.

Another important feature is the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. It is decorated with a chrome outline and works just like any other smartphone latest models: You need to carefully place your finger over the sensor to unlock the gadget or confirm a payment.

    Display

A very neat screen that definitely won’t disappoint anyone

With the number 5 in its name, the new Nexus does boast a 5.2-inch LCD touchscreen display with 1080 x 1920 resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

The Nexus 5X's screen features premium color gamut high quality. It includes color temperature 6800K, gamma value 2.31 and peak brightness of 487 nits. This indicates that we are dealing with a fairly high-quality display, ensuring visibility even in difficult lighting conditions.

    Interface and functionality

The interface design has not been radically changed. This means that the user will receive many card elements user interface paired with colorful icons and a predominantly white menu.

One of the most notable additions to the OS is new version is the application menu. Installed applications are now displayed in neat vertical windows (the same goes for panel widgets). As usual, application sorting is used in alphabetical order, but the ones that are used most often will appear at the top of the page.

New Android version It's unlikely that anyone will not like it. It does not cause any serious problems and extends the operating time without a charger. And all this comes with the usual arsenal of features offered by the OS.

    Ambient Display

Nexus 5X along with 6P provides useful information whenever it is activated or when a notification arrives. This is also necessary to reduce energy consumption.

    Quick access to the camera

Now appeared quick way Start the camera: You need to press the power button twice to start the camera.

    Processor and memory

    Don't underestimate the Snapdragon 808

Nowadays, many companies are choosing the Snapdragon 808 chipset. Google Nexus 5X is no exception. Based on a 64-bit 1.8 GHz architecture, the hexa-core processor is clearly not a toy when it comes to real-world performance. Combined with 2GB LPDDR3 RAM and GPU Adreno 418 GPU is capable of ensuring decent operation of the device.

When it comes to graphics processing, the smartphone can be put on par with the Note 5 and LG G4. Yes, it doesn't deliver 60 FPS like the iPhone 6S, but it's more than enough to satisfy the most avid gamers.

    Internet and communications

Even with the advent of Android 6.0 Marshmallow, there were no significant changes in this regard. Browser Google Chrome works at the same speed we are used to on other phones.

Nexus 5X supports the following LTE bands: B1/2/3/4/5/7/12/13/17/20/25/26/29. Thanks to the Qualcomm modem, the gadget is compatible with many data networks.

    Camera

Her impression leaves much to be desired

The Nexus 5X has a built-in f/2.0 12.3-megapixel camera with a Sony sensor on the back. It is supposed to be superior to its predecessor's camera due to improved optics and a super micropixel size of 1.55.

The camera shoots 4K video at an impressive 120fps with slow-motion clips. The sensor can handle 4K and 2K video recording resolutions at 60 fps, however, currently Qualcomm chipsets including Snapdragon processor 808, reach only 30 fps.

    Image quality

Photos of Times Square in New York show that the new products are capable of taking clear photos. In sunlight, the camera struggles a bit with dynamic range processing. Luckily, the HDR+ correction mode is capable of adjusting the exposure of an entire scene. This ensures that shadows and highlights are evenly spaced in your photos without applying too much color saturation during the shooting process.

    Video quality

The Nexus 5X's ability to produce slightly above-average quality video is helped by the fact that it has 4K video support. The smartphone manages to reproduce incredibly realistic colors, and the sound recording is excellent. Among the minuses, it is worth noting the lack of stabilization and slow focusing when recording 4K.

    Multimedia

    Weak speaker and headphone jack

Since we are dealing with Android, photos and videos are processed in a special Google application. There is also additional features and tools, e.g. cloud synchronization and various editing tools that enhance the application's capabilities.

The music player, not surprisingly, is controlled by Google Play Music. The sound quality of the speaker is not very impressive and reaches only 69.2 dB.

    Communication quality

Poor audibility on both ends makes it difficult to make voice calls

Of course, this is not a disaster, but it does make life a little more difficult. The Nexus 5X has some minor issues when making calls, although most calls are acceptable. Through headphones on the other end of the line, voices may be slightly distorted, especially if there is background noise.

    Battery

    Improved battery performance

Nexus 5X has lithium battery capacity 2700 mAh. In the performance test, the device worked for 6 hours and 25 minutes. This is an approximate average result, slightly lower than the Apple iPhone 6s. In any case, we recommend charging your device every evening to ensure it remains functional throughout the next day.

    Conclusion

Considering the price of the Google Nexus 5X, you can be sure that it will certainly manage to beat its competitors. The device represents the epitome of an excellent device on Android based, adhering to two principles: simplicity and convenience.

System updates for Google Nexus 5X will be released much earlier than for other devices. Also worth noting is its high-quality hardware, excellent display color range, and versatile camera. Google Nexus 5X can be called one of the highest-performing smartphones in this category, if not the best.

One of the main drawbacks of the Nexus 5 was its weak battery, which lasted from morning to evening only when used sparingly; when used actively, the smartphone grew a “tail” in the form of an external battery after lunch. The capacity of the built-in lithium polymer battery of the Nexus 5X is 2700 mAh, and operating system Android 6.0 "Marshmallow" has a Doze feature that reduces battery consumption in standby mode.

As a result, although not becoming a record holder for autonomy, the Nexus 5X has ceased to be a source of constant concern. Having removed the device from the charger at 6 am, by noon I usually had about 50-60% of the battery left, returning home at 4-5 pm - about 15-20%. And I use my smartphone quite actively all this time, for everything except games and videos. In continuous video playback mode at 75 percent screen brightness, the device “lives” up to complete discharge Battery life is about 7 hours.

In any case, connect to the device external battery or I would not be able to recharge in the car on the way home - due to the lack of a suitable adapter or cable for USB Type-C in my arsenal. One of the main technological innovations in the Nexus 5X and 6P is the use of instead of traditional microUSB. Its only advantage is at this stage, until the standard became more widespread - the ability to plug in a symmetrical plug on either side.

The data transfer protocol here is old, USB 2.0. Comes with charger and cable USB connectors Type-C on both ends. That is, without making additional purchases, you can charge the Nexus 5X only with the included charger and cable, and most likely you won’t be able to synchronize your smartphone with a computer via a cable at all (unless, of course, you have one of the laptops).

But the charging included in the kit is powerful and fast - although it does not have official support for QuickCharge 2.0, in fact the smartphone is fully charged in just an hour and a half. 20 minutes is enough to fill an empty battery by 30 percent. And, if you get hold of the appropriate cable, you can charge other devices from the Nexus 5X, including a Bluetooth headset - the USB port controller supports this feature. It is also possible to connect external drives via OTG protocol, but the problem will still be the same - to find required cable or an adapter to USB Type-C.

The Nexus 5X's camera is significantly better than the Nexus 5's and in this price category quite competitive. A 12.3-megapixel (4032 x 3024 pixels) Sony IMX377 sensor of 1/2.3" format was used with a very fast (f/2.0) lens and fairly large (1.55 micron) pixels, but without optical stabilization. Let us remind you that it was available both in the Nexus 5 (but this did not make the camera any less mediocre) and in the Nexus 6/ As well as in the Nexus 5X, the proprietary laser module is responsible for focusing.

The camera interface has changed slightly - you can switch to video shooting mode (shooting in 4K is supported, if desired), by simply swiping across the screen (previously this gesture was used to view the last photo taken). Menu items - options for shooting photospheres, panoramas, bokeh emulation mode and going to settings - appear by pressing the hamburger button. It's not the most elegant solution for a camera, an app where speed is paramount, but it follows Android design principles.

Examples of photos taken with the Nexus 5X camera (click on the images to view them full size):

You can study the quality of these and other images by following this link (Google Photos). Overall, there are dramatic improvements over the Nexus 5. At the same time, the results of shooting in dim light or just indoors are not as good as those of the leaders in this field - the iPhone 6s or top-end Samsung devices - the Nexus 5X lacks clarity. At the same time, the camera cannot but be praised for the large dynamic range of the photos; they almost never look whitish, especially if taken with the HDR+ mode switch turned on; the results of macro photography also look great. But in such cloudy weather as it has been in Moscow all last week, even photos taken during the day seem too dark.

In HDR+ mode, multiple images taken at different exposures are superimposed on each other to create a final photo that has equally well-detailed highlights and shadows. With HDR+, however, there is one big problem- taking and saving a photo takes an unacceptably long time, up to two to three seconds. We can only hope that this is an unpleasant feature of our test sample, which bore the inscription “not for sale.”

    Android 6.0

Google did not hesitate to give the next version of its Android operating system the next serial number - 6.0. However, I personally am not sure that there are really enough innovations and improvements to be added to the whole unit. This is, of course, not 5.1 or 5.2, but not 6.0 either. Introduced a year ago " material design“has not gone away and in some places has even become even more beautiful due to redrawn animations, all transitions in the interface are smooth, and energy consumption has been reduced.

However, one of the main features of the new operating system - the Now on Tap fast context search function - works only when English is selected as the interface language on the smartphone. In this case, you can simply hold down the “Home” button in the application to obtain information from the search engine that is relevant to what is happening on the screen. For example, if a song is playing, the smartphone will show cards with information about it and the artist; if a contact is open, it will try to “dig up” information about it on the Internet.

We’ve already talked about other innovations in Android 6.0; we can’t call them major, I refer those who are curious to .

    Purchase, conclusions

Indeed, there is nothing superfluous in the Nexus 5X. It embodies what Google believes a modern Android smartphone should be, with the most features for the least amount of money. For a fan pure Android, who dreams of being the first to receive all operating system updates, they haven’t come up with anything better. Compared to the Nexus 5, the camera has been radically improved, and the time has also increased battery life, and performance is at a level that is more than sufficient for the vast majority of users.

The problem is that, having set the price of a 16-gigabyte as the maximum level Nexus versions 5X in any shopping search engine, we will see quite a few interesting devices for the same or less money. Compact (with a screen from 5 to 5.2 inches) devices that, due to their “expensive” design and more advanced characteristics, look much more attractive to a buyer who does not bother with the “purity” of Android and is calm about third-party interface add-ons.

The same Honor 7 from Huawei offers the same thing at a price tag of 10,000 less, and in addition, a metal body, one and a half times more RAM, support microSD cards, a more capacious battery and also a very good camera. Official Samsung Galaxy The S6 has already dropped in price to 36-37,000 rubles - that is, by paying 1-2 thousand rubles more than the Nexus 5X, you can buy a device with premium body materials, a QHD display, a more advanced camera, more productive and more convenient to use hand. HTC One The M9 will also only be a couple thousand more expensive, and there's also Lenovo Vibe Shot and Vibe X2, Sony Xperia Z3/Z3+ and a lot of unofficial “Chinese”, increasingly quickly adopting premium design features from market leaders.

In short, at the current price, the “officials” in Russia have the only trump card of the Nexus 5X against its competitors - the current and promptly updated version of Android. To which the majority of consumers who simply need high-quality and beautiful smartphone, alas, I don’t care. Making a choice in favor of the Nexus 5X is also more difficult because Google solutions(LG in this case had to comply with the requirements of the IT giant) to use the USB Type-C connector. Yes, this is the future, but at least put an adapter in the box for regular USB, in order to save the buyer from having to look for cables and adapters with a new connector that are practically not currently on the market.
