• Create a Windows 10 system backup

Often, in certain situations, you may need a copy of your own OS, made in the form of an image. For example, if you need to make installation media or a copy from a downloaded distribution in order to use it later. However this process raises many questions due to the novelty of the system. Creating an image of Windows 10 on a PC is not that difficult.

As a rule, most users tend to use various third-party programs downloaded on the Internet in this matter. But you can create an image using standard means, which is not difficult.

An installation image created specifically for Windows installations 10 is not as relevant as its backup copy, due to the free distribution of the distribution with auto-installation. However, it is advisable to create an image of an existing system. A backup is essential because anything can happen. And it’s much easier to carry a small image on a flash drive than to later restore the operating system from scratch.

Creating an image with your own hands

Using various third-party programs is not always profitable. Of course, they save space on a flash drive or disk, and they do a pretty good job of it. However, in this case, there is a high risk of not being able to recover your data without using boot disk. But not everyone has it and not always. This is why it is not recommended to use these utilities to create a copy of Windows 10. Therefore, it is most beneficial to use the tools of the system itself. This is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance.

    Finding the right tool

So, to create an image of your Windows 10, you need to carry out several manipulations. First, you should open “Search”, which is located next to the “Start” button. After changing the interface operating system Windows 10 process has been simplified compared to previous versions. We need to find the section called “File History”. Enter this name in the line and then click on the section that appears.

A new dialog box will appear. In it we need to look at the lower left corner, where it says “System backup”. You must click on this inscription. Administrator rights are required, make sure you have them before starting the operation.

In the section that will open after this action, you need to click on the inscription “Creating a system image.” After clicking on this inscription, a new window will appear, which is what we needed. Here you can easily and simply create a Windows OS image.

    Directly copying the system

The first step is to select the drive on which the copy will be stored. You can use several different places for this:

    • A local disk other than where the system being copied is located. Most convenient option, which will not require additional media. The image will be saved on the selected disk, from where it can later be used. You can create it here only when you are sure that your hard drive is working properly.
    • Local disk with the operating system. Not the most profitable solution. If something happens to this partition, both the system itself and its backup copy will be lost. That's not why it was done Windows image 10, so it's not worth using. If you decide to create it here, it means that you don’t really need your backup copy.
    • External media (DVD). Convenient, practical, easy. The disk can be stored in some place where no one and nothing will touch it. However, there is a minus - you can always lose it or break it.
    • Network folder at a specific address. The downside is that without access to someone else's computer on which the file will be stored, it is problematic to use it. But such media cannot be lost or broken, unless the user of this PC is local network will ruin it personally.

After this, you can create an image of the Windows 10 operating system. Select a storage location - and click on the “Next” button. A window will appear in which the user is shown information about the upcoming creation. It shows us that a backup copy consisting of such and such files will be saved there, and so much space will be required. You can choose which discs you want to copy.

By the way, before you start archiving, make sure that there is definitely enough space in the selected section. It is also advisable that after the operation is completed, at least 10% of free space remains on it. If there is not enough space, close “Create an image” and delete unnecessary files.

Now, to create an image, you just need to click the “Archive” button, and then wait, watching the progress in the status bar. You may have to spend a lot of time on this operation, but it is worth it. Windows 10 will automatically notify you that the operation is complete. And only after that it will be possible to close the window that displayed the archiving status.

    After surgery

Immediately after archiving is completed, Windows 10 will prompt you to create special disk recovery.

With its help, you can quickly restore the operating system when you do not have access to your image or other PCs with this version. It is recommended to do this, since it is much easier to play it safe.

Reserve copy of Windows 10 is necessary to restore the system in case of failures in the operating system, if it is impossible to boot Windows on the computer, in case of malfunction hard drive. This is a reliable option for recovering on PC, previously installed Windows 10, without reinstalling the system.

When using the operating system, problems may occur in Windows or in the operation of applications caused by various reasons, mainly due to the actions of the user himself. Unfortunately, the user does not always cope with solving the problem that has arisen: there is no information about this on the Internet or it is impossible to choose correct actions due to the lack of obviousness of the source of the malfunction.

Steps must be taken to return Windows performance, or the desired program installed on your computer. The simplest option: use a system created in advance for recovery.

This option will not always work: there may be no recovery points on the computer, or there may only be recovery points created after the problem occurred. Sometimes, the process of restoring the system using restore points ends in failure: for some internal reasons, the system does not apply the restore, then Windows continues to operate in the current mode.

A more reliable option: create a backup system image to restore Windows 10, which will be useful in case of problems. Failures can occur not only in software, may fail hard drive computer. After replacing the equipment, using backup copy Windows image, the user will restore the operating system on the new hardware.

    Windows 10 recovery backup image

To store operating system backups, I recommend using external hard disk connected to the computer via USB port. Before creating a system image, connect the external drive to your computer. After completion backup, the external hard drive can be disconnected from the PC.

Backup saved on another hard section disk, less reliable way storage due to the fact that the system and backup are on the same hard drive. In case hard drive malfunction disk, you will not be able to use a Windows backup to restore your computer.

How to create a Windows 10 system recovery image

In order to create an image installed system, you will need to enter the recovery options. You can do this using the Control Panel or from the Settings application.

To enter system recovery settings from the Control Panel, follow these steps:

    1. On the Taskbar, enter the expression “Control Panel” (without quotes) into the search field.
    2. In the All Control Panel Items window, first select Small Icons in the View Settings, and then click on File History.

You can enter recovery mode using file history using “Options” as follows:

    1. Go to the Start menu and launch the Settings application.
    2. In the Windows Settings window, click on Update & Security.
    3. Enter the "Backup Service" section.
    4. In the File History Backup section, click the Other Options link to configure related settings.
    1. In the Backup Options window, in the Related Options option, click on View Advanced Options.

In the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) window, in the left sidebar, click on Create a system image.

In the “Create a system image” window, you must select a location to store the archive. After initialization of the archiving devices is completed, the system will suggest a suitable disk, in its opinion, with enough space to store the backup copy.

There are 3 options to choose from:

    • On your hard drive.
    • On DVD.
    • In a network folder.

Most suitable option for most users: hard drive. This category includes portable hard drives connected to the computer.

Usage DVD disc ov for storing archival copies is less practical due to less reliability laser discs, and due to the relatively small size of DVD discs. Therefore, to create a Windows image you will need large number optical disks.

Network folders on own server Only a small number of users have it, so we will not consider this method.

Select the disk to store the archive, and then click on the “Next” button.

In the next window you need to select the disks included in the backup. By default, the system includes the system drive “C:” and service system partitions on the hard drive in the backup copy.

This window displays information about the required location for saving the archive of the selected disks and free space on the drive selected for storing the backup.

The user can add other partitions and disks to the Windows backup. IN in this case, we are backing up the system, so we don't need other drives.

In the “Confirm archiving settings” window, review the selected settings, and then click the “Archive” button.

The process of creating a system image begins: data is archived.

Once the Windows backup is complete, you will be prompted to create a system repair disc.

I recommend creating a system repair disk; it may be useful in a situation if it becomes impossible to boot Windows on your computer. Read detailed article about creating a recovery disk in Windows 10. You can use it as a recovery disk installation DVD disk or bootable USB flash drive with Windows 10.

The “WindowsImageBackup” folder will appear on the disk, in which the system backup image file is located. Do not move this folder to another location on the disk, otherwise Windows will not be able to detect the backup for system recovery.

    Conclusions of the article

To create a backup copy of Windows 10, the user can use systemic means backup using the File History tool. A system image with all Windows settings at the time the backup was created will be created on another disk. In case of problems with the computer, the user will restore the system from a previously created backup - a Windows backup.

Creating a Windows 10 backup (video)

Before creating an image, study technical information in the appropriate section. And don't say otherwise that we didn't warn you. Not only can the backup take a long time, but restoring the files will not be so easy. Or rather, quickly. To create a backup copy of Windows 10, you need to find a drive with a USB 3 interface (any generation), because more early versions work an order of magnitude slower, that is, 10 times. See for yourself whether to work for 5 minutes or 50. If there is no difference, proceed with what you have on hand.

The image of the dozen must weigh at least 60 GB. Provided that installed applications not much. For those who have downloaded the full Microsoft version Visual Studio(Billy Gates has been allowing this to be done for free for some time now), such a small volume cannot be done. Here it’s just right to prepare 128 GB and even more. Given that ISO image The installer fits on a 4 (sometimes 8) GB flash drive. We would rate the tenth issue as very gluttonous. Even virtual machine it requires at least 60 GB of virtual space. For comparison, about 20 are allocated for Ubuntu.

    Technical characteristics: selection of equipment

A simple analysis of market prices shows that copying to a flash drive is not the most cost-effective method. The only advantage is the relative mobility of the archive. Due to the small size of the media itself. The balance of power is such that old HDDs provide maximum speed transfers at 3 Gbit/s. This is about 10 times higher than all releases of USB 2. Moreover, even the developers of the standard themselves agree that USB 3.0 provides a real speed of no higher than 3.2 Gbps. This is explained by the need to introduce check data bits and some other features of the protocol.

    Flash drive requirements

From the above, it becomes clear that a flash drive of generation 3.0 or higher is required. It is she who can compete with the speed of information transfer with hard drives. The specific price of the volume of stored information is approximately four times higher. There is one more feature: our sellers do not distinguish a bit from a byte, so you need to focus more on the official websites of manufacturers when choosing products. Here's an example.

Not long ago, SanDisk, a pioneer in the field of SD memory, released the type of flash drive we needed. Here is a screenshot from the company's official website.

From the information presented it is clearly seen that the memory complies with the USB 3.0 specification, which is quite suitable for the task of creating a backup copy. On domestic market This product looks a little different.

The figures shown in the figure are 8 times less than the real ones, which corresponds to USB second generation. Which does not correspond to our task, due to the fact that the process lasts for many hours. Seeing such inconsistencies, we decided to open the official website of the SanDisk company and see who got it wrong and where. It turned out that the products presented on the screen were described with an error, but were quite suitable for archiving.

    Motherboard

The interface must be 100% supported from the outside motherboard. Most of them carry several USB 3.0 slots, starting around 2015. Along with this, the system unit also contains outdated second-generation interfaces, which work approximately 10 times slower. Therefore, before starting work, you need to look at the manual or solve the problem using some other method. We leave the latter to the discretion of the readers (because it is impossible to list all the solutions), and in the booklet the information we need may look like this.

We see that on the rear panel there are 4 interface connectors of the new generation and 2 of the old one. As for the front part system unit, then to find out the number USB protocol You will probably have to open the case (to see where the wires go).

    Prices

On AliExpress you can buy a hard drive with a capacity of 250 GB (SATA II) for 2100 rubles (including delivery). The pros and cons here are as follows:

    1. Disk space costs about 6 times less than a SanDisk flash drive.
    2. The speeds of the devices are approximately equal. Although the hard drive will most likely surpass USB 0.
    3. Since the hard drive is magnetic, transportation may have a negative impact on it.
    4. Most of the products are imported from China. It’s not a fact that AliExpress delivery is any different.

USB 3.0 drives are not always available in regions. Please note that the screenshot above says something about delivery. And it costs money. In addition, the goods must be picked up at the designated place and time. This is not always convenient (with AliExpress product usually arrives at Russian Post Office). What we're getting at is that creating a backup copy of Windows 10, which is so different large size, not at all the most best idea. It was said above that the required archive size is usually at least 60-80 GB, so the drive should be 128. For example, the one shown in the screenshot.

    How to create an image

After the transition, the search for available media will begin. Magnetic tapes are out of fashion today, so the choice is made from more traditional devices. It is easy to verify that among the listed disks there are also USB drives. Let's say more, there are also SD cards, although this is not directly emphasized anywhere. From a system point of view, in Windows 10 these devices are seen without any distinction. Both are connected to the same bus.

    Image size

We have already stated in previous reviews that an SD drive differs from a flash drive only in shape and size. Now, make sure what was said above about Backup systems. Created image The disk weighs almost 200 GB. Agree that it will not fit on every flash drive.

You could argue that we have a 16 GB page file. But pay attention - the programming environment takes up a little more than half. Apart from her, there is nothing in our top ten. No games, no complex applications. The most powerful program is GIMP for editing graphics. However, there is one secret. The wizard tries to archive the entire disk. Not only system files. In our case, the virtual machine weighs approximately 40 GB. But there is nowhere to move it. Consider this fact, perhaps knowing it will help you save some space (using the command line).

    Third party provision

During XP, Acronis was widely used. To be honest, we don’t see a single reason why it would be necessary to create a system image third party application. It’s a different matter if storage with the Linux operating system is used.

    Linux Servers

Ten sees everything perfectly external drives, on which you could back up Windows 10. To pair with file system Ext uses the Samba server (in common parlance - samba). The package is downloaded from various GNU resources, under the required version Linux. Installation is carried out with the command sudo apt -get install samba. This standard procedure, familiar to many. A set of files is created, configured through configurations, usually located in the /etc/samba/smb.conf directory.

Actually, after setting up network paths, computers begin to see each other. Pay attention to the screen above: it has an option to search for places with remote access. A guide for setting up Ubuntu Server can be found here http://help.ubuntu.ru/wiki/%D1%80%D1%83%D0%BA%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%BE%D0%B4% D1%81%D1%82%D0%B2%D0%BE_%D0%BF%D0%BE_ubuntu_server/%D1%81%D0%B5%D1%82%D1%8C_windows/samba_file_server. You can select a folder for storage, and ten will see it over the network. Many perform this operation through the built-in wbadmin start backup command. Options:

    • -backupTarget: Local folder to create a copy or Network folder to create a copy (archive destination).
    • -include:System volume (the partition to be archived).
    • -nonRecurseInclude: Folders to include (files that are not located on the above drive can be included in multiples, separated by commas).
    • -exclude: Folders to exclude (throwing out some folders).
    • -nonRecurseExclude:Folders to exclude (throws out some folders for locations specified in nonRecurseInclude).
    • -allCritical (specifies to include all system files in the copy).
    • -systemState (some specific files indicating the system state, for example, boot.ini).
    • -noVerify (do not check for errors, reduces operation time).
    • -user:Login.
    • -password:Password.
    • -noInheritAcl (if you do not use this parameter, then access to the copy is open to everyone, including unauthorized persons, no passwords needed).
    • -vssFull or -vssCopy (related to backup history).
    • -quiet (no report for each elementary operation).

Login and password are used to access the server. Example: wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:(Linux server address) -include:C: -allcritical -quiet

There are never too many backups. If you can back up a backup, do so. Fortunately, Windows makes this task much easier with the System Image Backup utility.

Never used it? Now we will explain to you what it does and how to use it.

    What is a backup?

This is a recovery image of your system, and the System Image Backup feature built into Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 can create full copy happening in your OS on at the moment. The backup contains the complete installation of your operating system, including settings, games, Windows applications and yours personal files.

The main advantage of this approach is the possibility full recovery in case of a critical software or hardware error.

The only downside is that you can't restore separate files. Just the whole thing. (Oddly enough, you can easily take out and unzip your files with documents, photos, music and more if necessary.)

In addition, if you do not create backups constantly, when problems arise system errors you risk losing valuable documents, settings and programs, since you can only restore the last state offered by the OS.

To that end, and for a number of other reasons, Microsoft introduced two new features in Windows 8, bringing them to Windows 10. Use them along with File History to save latest copies all your documents with the help of the proposed reliable solution.

Despite some shortcomings, it will certainly help you.

I use System Backup to create a backup of my PC, which includes installing Windows, everything latest updates, special settings and programs. I use File History and OneDrive to save files. Making a copy of your system by following these tips will help you avoid duplicating files and losing important documents.

If everything on my computer is working properly, I use a backup in Windows in cases where I make any changes to the system that could cause harm. For example, testing Windows update 10 Technical Preview. Before that, I connect the USB device, run the utility, and everything is ready

in less than 20 minutes. Subsequently, if something goes wrong after tampering with the OS, I can easily roll back to the previous state.

The following instructions will help you create a disk image on Windows 10, they are also suitable for Windows 8.1.

How to create a disk image on Windows 8.1 or 10?

    1. Right-click on Start and launch Control Panel.

    2. Select File History

    3. Once there, use the System Image Backup function in the lower left corner of the screen

    4. Connect a USB device with enough free space.

    5. You will be asked to choose one of three methods for creating a backup. For this example we will select the hard drive that we just connected. Remember that you can create a backup both on DVD and online, but these options will slow down the process.

    7. Confirm everything and start creating the image by clicking Create a backup copy.

This process can last from 10 minutes to two hours, it all depends on the amount of data being recorded.

And yes, while creating a backup, you can use your computer in the same way as in normal mode.

When finished, store your file drive in a safe place.

While plenty of tech-savvy users are familiar with the process of backing up their OS, you'd be surprised how many people aren't. I often get questions like: “I updated my system and now Windows won't boot, how can I get it back?” Or “My hard drive crashed, how can I recover all my data?” and in most cases, a simple backup could save them from such problems.

How often do you do a full system backup? What software do you use? Let us know in the comments!

Updated: To restore your computer from a backup, connect the device with it and restart the PC in Windows installations. Click Next, then click on the Fix your computer link in the lower left corner of the screen. Run Problem Search, Additional settings and select System Restore. Now select the recovery target, click Next and Finish.

Creating and using a Windows 10 backup

We have already talked about the built-in recovery tools that allow you to quickly return Windows 10 to a working state if problems arise. software problems. Let's take a closer look at backup, which allows you to save settings, programs and files.

    Creating a system image

You can create an image of Windows 10 using standard tools that were first implemented back in Windows Vista. The Windows 10 backup will be a snapshot of the system with its settings, installed programs and user files that are stored on the system partition (usually drive C).

The image can be saved on another (non-system) partition of the hard drive, a second connected hard drive, several optical media or network resources. It is preferable to select a second connected hard drive (if there is one) or a non-system hard drive partition.

By default, disks containing the boot sector and system sector will be added to the archive. Windows partition 10.

You can archive other partitions, but the built-in image creation tool does not support this. best way. When restoring, there is a possibility that the archived partitions with user files will be erased.

Therefore, leave the standard configuration - a system-reserved partition and a volume with Windows files.

After selecting the composition of the image, click the “Archive” button. Once the image is prepared, the system will prompt you to create a recovery disk that you can use if Windows 10 stops booting.

If you have an empty “blank” at hand, use this opportunity - returning Windows to a working state from a recovery disk is easier than using the F8 key or installation media. Insert the optical media into the drive and click Create Disc.

You can create a recovery disk later - we talked about this in more detail in the article on how to restore Windows 10.

You don’t need to do anything else: the backup copy will be stored in the location you specify until it becomes necessary to use it to restore Windows.

    Restoring from a backup

The backup copy is stored on disk, all that remains is to perform a restore to return Windows 10 to a working state. If the system is unstable but boots:

    1. Open Windows Settings. Go to the "Update and Security" section.
    2. Switch to the "Recovery" tab. In the "Special Boot Options" field, click the "Restart Now" button.

If such a button is in Windows settings no, or the system has stopped starting, then use a previously created recovery disk or installation media with Windows distribution 10.

The image recovery wizard will appear on the screen. By default, the latest system snapshot by creation date is selected, but you can manually specify the path to an earlier copy if available. Click Next.

There is no need to change anything in the second window of the wizard - click “Next”. Check the information provided and click “Finish” to start the process of restoring Windows 10 from the previously created system snapshot.

Confirm the data replacement and wait while the system is restored from the image. Once this process is complete, restart your computer. When you launch, you will see that Windows 10 is returned to the state it was in when the system snapshot was taken.

    AOMEI Backupper Standard

If the standard backup tool does not suit you, use the free AOMEI Backupper Standard program. This utility offers simple and effective way creating a copy and then restoring the system.

If the system boots, you can restore it from the created image in the program interface in the “Restore” section. The location of the copy is determined automatically, but if this does not happen, specify the path manually. Make sure the restore is to the correct locations and click “Start Restore.”

Was described above ideal option, at which you can get into the system. In practice, users resort to restoring from a backup only if Windows 10 completely refuses to start. In this case, you will need a bootable USB flash drive previously created in AOMEI Backupper Standard.

    1. Connect the flash drive to your computer.
    2. Launch the program and go to the "Utilities" tab.
    3. Select "Create Bootable Media".

After loading from this flash drive, the main program window will open, through which you can start restoring from the image using the instructions above.

There's another one free way create an image of Windows 10 - use the Macrium Reflect Free utility. It works on the same principle as AOMEI Backupper, offering to record a backup copy and create a bootable USB flash drive, which is useful if the system does not start.

There are other options, for example, backup tools from Acronis. They provide more features than the standard Windows tool and the programs listed above. In particular, Acronis True Image creates a snapshot of the system, which takes up 2 times less space than the image created using Windows. But you have to pay for Acronis products, so this option is not a viable option for most users.

    Windows 10 backup

Many PC users mistakenly overlook the importance of backing up the Windows image because... They think that nothing bad will happen to their operating system and that it will work stably and reliably for a long time. But then rainy day X comes and the system, due to certain reasons (virus attack, etc.), stops responding to commands or does not boot at all.

No matter what you do, nothing helps and all that remains is to reinstall the OS, followed by the tedious process of searching and installing, setting up previous programs. But everything could have been much simpler if there was a backup copy. It would take a matter of minutes to restore full functionality and all applications would be in place.

In this article we will look at simple instructions on how to make a backup copy of Windows 10 using a built-in, standard tool. A backup copy means a complete image of the system with all programs and settings installed at the time the copy was created. Those. after a potential failure and restoration of the system from the image, the user receives the state of the operating system at the time the copy was created.

How to create a backup of Windows 10 using a standard backup tool

To get to the function you are looking for, right-click on the “Start” menu, then follow the following path: Control Panel – System and Security – Backup and Restore. There is another alternative path: Start – Settings – Update and Security – Backup Service – Go to the “Backup and Restore” section.

In the new window, click on the “Create a system image” tab.

Then you should select the location where the system image will be stored. In my case selected external HDD disk.

In the next window we indicate which disks will be included in the archiving. Archiving system disk C will be executed by default.

As you can see, the required storage space is of this archive quite large and will take some time to create the image.

Once the procedure is complete, you will be prompted to create a system repair disc.

If not free disk at hand, then this offer should be rejected.

How to run Windows 10 recovery

You can restore the system from a backup image in several ways: from the recovery environment of the working operating system and using boot device(if the system does not boot).

If you have problems with Windows 10, but this does not affect its ability to boot, you can enter the recovery environment through the Settings application. You should follow the following path: Start – Settings – Update and Security – Recovery. In the “Special boot options” section, click on “Restart now”.

If Windows 10 does not boot, then you can get into the recovery environment from installation media, for example from bootable flash drive. After opening the recovery partition, look for the window with additional parameters, and then we restore the system using the image.

Three options to back up your Windows 10 hard drive for system recovery

So I decided to make a backup copy of the hard windows disk 10 to restore immediately describe what happens.

I will create on an external hard drive, but you can also create on a flash drive, as long as there is enough space.

I have an external one and there is already a lot of important data on it, so I’ll try to break it down.

For this I will use windows tools 10, although there are programs that work more efficiently in this regard (Acronis True Image).

You can do it simpler - create a restore point, but there will only be a complete copy of the registry, although the registry is the basis and in most cases it is completely enough for recovery.

I’ll immediately note that I’m doing this on a ten for the first time and haven’t tried it on a flash drive, the main thing is that the system can detect it.

It seems that there should be at least four gigabytes of space. Well, let's go break the disk.

How to partition a disk on Windows 10 to create a backup copy

First of all, I launch the classic control panel, go to the administration section and click on the “computer management” line (almost at the very bottom).

Then I select disk management and see that mine is there. Let's try to break it. To do this, I’ll right-click on it and select the line Shrink Volume.

I have 368 GB available for compression. There's a lot of that. I will compress only 66 GB.

Everything worked out, now I have 68 GB of unallocated space. Let's try to distribute it to create a backup copy on it. To do this, I right-click on it and select the line “create simple volume”.

The process has begun. The Volume Creation Wizard starts.

Finally, I click ready, wait a few seconds and eventually get a new disk partition on which I will try to make a full backup of my Windows 10.

How to make a Windows 10 recovery backup on external media

Now I go back to the control panel, open the “recovery” section and click on the line “create a recovery disk”.

A new window appeared in which scanning began.

So let's wait and see what happens. It worked. I see a recently created volume. I select it and press next.

Now I see a warning that all data will be lost. Let them be, there’s nothing there anyway – I’ll press to create it.

I see the Windows 10 backup has started. Let's wait. A few seconds later I see the inscription “system copying” in the same window.

It goes slowly, but it moves. About ten minutes passed and the ready option appeared.

I press. Let's see what happened. I see everything worked out, even the files in the trash were copied.

Now you can not be afraid of experiments - if necessary, you can quickly restore the system from a backup copy.

ATTENTION: if you use an external hard drive, all your files will be lost, so it is better to use a regular DVD drive.

Creating a full copy of Windows 10

The method described above for creating a copy of Windows 10, but not a complete one. A full copy means an image with all the files present.

To do this, go to the same control panel and go to the “backup and restore” section.

In it, on the left side, click “create a system image.” You will be given three options. On the hard drive, on DVD and on the network.

I'm not happy with this. DVDs have little space, and network ones are unreliable - Internet is required. Therefore, I select the external hard drive and click next.

The window changes to another one. I don’t touch anything in it, but press further again. Now the “archive” option has appeared - I click on it.

I see it's new. Preparations are underway. Let him go - I'm waiting.

Now the process of archiving drive “C” has appeared - let’s wait.

That's all. Described all types of backup copy windows 10. Via a save point (see link at the beginning of the article).

The second is via a recovery disk (you can use a flash drive with a capacity of at least 4 gigabytes)

The third is through archiving - a complete copy, saving all your files. This is the most advanced option.

It just requires external media. I needed 50 gigabytes. This is despite the fact that I copied only the contents of media “C”.

If I wanted everyone, I would need as many as 500. There is such an opportunity - you just need to put the birds in. Good luck.

Windows 10 backup. How to create a system image and restore

I decided to make a backup of Windows 10 on my computer and thought why not prepare detailed guide on this topic.

Let's first figure out what it is, why create this image, and what to do with it later. A backup is a complete image of the operating system. Simply put, this is a copy of the system drive C. If necessary, you can create a copy of other partitions. In case of any problems with the operating system (stopped loading, a virus, some kind of error, breakdown of hard disk, or SSD), we can completely restore Windows 10 from the image we created.

After recovery, we will receive a working system with all the settings, installed programs, and files that were present at the time the backup was created. And you don’t have to configure and install everything again, as if it were after clean install Windows 10, or after reinstalling (resetting) Windows 10. In the same way, unlike restore points (which store only the most necessary system files). In this case, we keep a complete copy system partition, which we can restore at any time, even to another hard drive.

I recommend creating a backup copy of Windows 10 immediately after installing and configuring the operating system. Firstly, it will weigh less, and secondly, after its restoration we will receive a ready-to-use and configured system without excess garbage. WITH installed drivers, programs, etc.

Windows has a standard tool that you can use to create a backup. This is the method I will use. And of course, I’ll show you how to use the saved image if necessary. There is another way using DISM.exe. I won't consider it. It is complicated, and I don’t understand why it is needed at all. After all, there is an easy way to create a full image of Windows 10.

Create a Windows 10 backup using a standard system tool

We need to go to the “Backup and Restore” section. It is located in the control panel. To avoid searching for it for a long time, I advise you to open a search and start typing the word “backup”. The item we need will appear in the search results.

A window will appear in which you need to click on “Create a system image”.

I will store the system image on an external hard drive. You can also save it to a flash drive. Save the image to the same physical disk, on which the system partition is located, is not entirely correct. In case of any problems with the disk, you will lose all files along with the backup copy. Therefore, it must be a different drive. Select it from the list and click “Next”.

By default, a copy is created only of system disks that are necessary for the operation of the operating system. But if necessary, you can also select other local drives for archiving. I left only system ones.

The next window will contain archiving information. Which ones were divided, and on which drive. To begin, click on the “Archive” button.

We are waiting for the backup process to complete.

Upon completion, the system will prompt us to create a recovery disk.

It is needed so that if Windows 10 stops loading, we can boot from this disk and restore the system from a backup, or perform other steps to restore the OS boot. You can create it right away, or use the article: how to create a Windows 10 recovery disk on a flash drive or DVD. There I showed not only how to create a recovery disk, but also a flash drive. And also how to use this disk to restore your computer.

    Success message.

Now the image of the entire system (and possibly other partitions you select) is stored on our drive. We will be able to use it at any time.

How to restore Windows 10 from a backup

To restore Windows 10 from a backup, you need to go to the system recovery menu. It can be opened in different ways. We will consider two cases: when the system boots (the computer turns on), and when problems arise with loading Windows(errors, blue screens, hard drive failure, etc.).

During the recovery process, all files on local disk There will be replacements with files from the image. This means that, for example, if you created a file after creating a backup copy, it will be deleted. Of course, only on the partition that will be restored.

    Let's look at both options:

If you are downloading from installation disk, then after selecting the language you need to click on “System Restore”.

    Select " Additional options».

We are interested in the “System image restoration” section.

The drive on which the Windows 10 backup is stored must be connected to the computer. The system itself will find and offer you the latest available system image. If necessary, you can select the image manually.

In the next window there is an option to format all hard disk and re-partition it. But this will delete all data from the hard drive. Most likely you just need to click “Next”. Only those partitions that are in the backup copy will be overwritten. Other sections will not be affected.

All that remains is to wait until the process of restoring the computer from the image is completed. The speed depends on the size of the image itself, the drive on which it is stored, and the drive installed in the computer.

    Other backup options

Everything I wrote about above can be done through DISM. Running commands in command line. In the same way, you can restore an image created in DISM. True, I don’t see the need for this when it is possible to create an image through a separate tool in the system, and restore it by pressing a few buttons, and not by running 10 commands.

There is also special programs, which you can use to create a complete image of the system partition with Windows 10, or other partitions, and restore them if necessary. Popular free programs: Macrium Reflect Free, Aomei Backupper Standard. True, they are English. Therefore, I recommend using standard way, which I wrote about in detail above.
