• Where is the microsoft lumia 550 located?

We have a new budget phone from Microsoft on sale - the Lumia 550. The company doesn’t say much about the phone, and at the recent event where the flagships were presented, no attention was paid to the gadget.
So what is this smartphone, which the manufacturer calls one of the most available devices on Windows 10 running on networks fourth generation? Let's figure it out together.

    Screen

Microsoft Lumia 550 has a 4.7-inch screen with a resolution of 720x1280, which is very decent for a budget phone. Pixel density - 315 pixels/inch. This, of course, is far from being like the flagships, but still impressive.
The colors are not very bright and saturated, so if you want to “tear your eyes out” like in Super AMOLED, you should look towards Samsung. But it's all the same best display in its class, which, moreover, is protected by Gorilla Glass 3, which is practically scratch-resistant.

    Design

Since the Microsoft Lumia 550 is offered at a super-budget price, the designers didn't even think about giving it an intricate look. Simple, discreet style with a little rounded edges and a small protection for the camera on the back of the device - that's all that the company from Redmond offers us. And this is easily explained - for $139 there is no better way to assemble it. It is doomed to be built in plastic. The main funds went to the screen and the main camera.

Polycarbonate plastic, of course, is far from the best material in terms of quality that can be found on the market. But at least it's matte, which in theory means fingerprints won't show up as much as a glossy finish. By the way, the company offers only two colors: black and white. And here the consumer can choose - white is more susceptible to scratches and scuffs, and black is more susceptible to fingerprints. The right to choose remains.

    Filling

1.1 GHz 4x is installed here nuclear processor Snapdragon 210 and 1GB RAM. It's not such a powerful filling, but Windows Phone It has never been demanding on hardware, so you won’t notice a slow interface and other troubles inherent in Android. If you want to play demanding games as well as perform resource-intensive tasks, this phone is not for you. The others will be happy.

    Camera

Usually you don't get a very good camera for this price, and the Lumia 550 was no exception, but the engineers didn't put a completely terrible module here. There is a 5 MP camera with flash at the back and a 2 MP camera at the front, which can be used to take good selfies. Lots of likes on Instagram guaranteed! There's not much to say about the quality of pictures taken with the main camera. The better the lighting, the better the pictures - nothing new. The video is recorded in 720p at a frame rate of 30fps. Nothing unusual, but already something .

    Peculiarities

The main feature of the Lumia 550 is Windows 10 Mobile. This is one of the first smartphones to come pre-installed with this version of the OS. We will not dwell on the features. We only note new functions, such as completely new browser, Microsoft Office, Microsoft OneDrive, and improved system design.

Among other features, it is worth highlighting support for 4G networks on such a budget smartphone. This means that you will be able to surf the Internet on the most high speed, which is now available in Russia.

    Battery, memory, communication

Microsoft Lumia 550 has a 2100 mAh battery. These are approximately the following numbers:

    • Maximum talk time on a 2G network is 16 hours; 4G - 17 h
    • The maximum operating time in music playback mode is 60 hours; video - 7.1 hours
    • Maximum operating time on the Internet via Wi-Fi connection: 10 h

In general, under average load, the battery will last for a day and a half, or even two.

With memory, not everything is so rosy: the smartphone has only 8GB of ROM, but there is microSD support up to 200GB.

The smartphone has Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G and Bluetooth 4.1, but no NFC. But, again, remember the price.

    Conclusion Bayon

Microsoft Lumia 550 is, first of all, inexpensive, available phone on Windows 10. Made of plastic and having minimal characteristics, the smartphone works stably and has no complaints about the build quality. Of course, the smartphone did not have enough power to pull out the Continuum capabilities, but, on the other hand, there is no need to worry about where to find this docking station, which is needed to connect the device to the PC in order to launch the Continuum capabilities. The company bet on two things: the screen and the camera. And I was right. Since many people don’t need anything more than constantly looking at the screen at a comfortable picture and taking high-quality photos day and night.

As for Windows 10 itself, it comes with Outlook, Office, Cortana, OneDrive and Xbox apps. All together. It's a pity, 8 GB of internal memory is not enough for more. First of all, because she herself mobile system takes up half of this space. So a Micro-SD card will be required to purchase with every Lumia 550.

The new Microsoft Lumia 550 smartphone is an inexpensive device with the same qualities as its older brothers.

    Preface

The qualities that Microsoft has endowed with the 5th series of Lumia smartphones are what we once expected from the 6th series. New device It's certainly not comparable to the Lumia 640, but it's definitely better than the old Lumia 635.

Considering this is an inexpensive phone, this is great news. The technical component is well thought out and works as it should. But, as with the Lumia 950 and 950 XL, the software leaves much to be desired. Despite all the innovations and changes in Windows 10 Mobile, the new OS still doesn't feel like a finished product.

    "Iron"

It is absolutely impossible to satisfy everyone's needs nowadays, but when it comes to the technical side, Microsoft is making progress with the latest releases. For example, the Lumia 640, which was released almost a year ago, is one of the best examples of the combination of features, performance and price.

By releasing the Lumia 550 almost simultaneously with the flagships Lumia 950 and 950 XL, Microsoft continues down the same path. Production budget smartphones is an important task for any company - this way you can win the attention of ordinary customers. Not everyone is willing to pay $600 or more for a phone, but still, everyone wants a decent device.

The Lumia 550 doesn't claim to win any awards, but despite this, the phone feels pleasant and unambiguous.

However, if you ask what color you should buy a new product in, we will answer – definitely white! This option looks better and we like the contrast of the white glossy lid with the black display. The black version looks cheap and boring. The back cover has a shiny Microsoft logo imprinted on it, making the ordinary plastic brick look completely different. The tactile sensations are also pleasant. The phone fits well in the hand, the buttons are quite responsive, and the corners are rounded so that it becomes even more comfortable to hold the phone.

The phone's specs look very good on paper. But in practice, everything turns out to be more than worthy, especially when it comes to the display. The decision to put a 4.7 diagonal 720p screen on the 5 Series model was a smart move by Microsoft. The screen is the part with which the user is most connected, and if there is anything you need to save on, it’s not on the display.

In most respects it can be compared to the screen of the more expensive Lumia 640. Blacks aren't the deepest they can be, but overall the colors are bright and pleasant. Thanks to the 4.7 diagonal and 720p resolution, text appears relatively clearly if you look at the screen from a distance.

The screen is also very responsive to touch, despite the phone's low price. The only thing that can be criticized is that the display does not have an anti-glare coating, but this fact did not cause us much inconvenience while using the device. Oh yes, the display frame at the bottom and top is very large. This makes the phone look larger than it actually is, and the navigation buttons are now on the screen, so we don't see any excuse why this part of the device couldn't be made smaller. What you do get is Glance Screen, which looks fantastic.

The phone is quite fast, and its hardware can cope with any everyday task. Windows user 10 Mobile. Of course, you are unlikely to be able to play “heavy” games, but the smartphone will perform most functions with a bang.

1 GB of RAM is enough for everyday work. Those who like to store a lot of files on their smartphone will be happy with 8 GB internal memory expandable with a microSD card. To be honest, we did not expect a memory card slot from Microsoft, however, such things cannot but please us.

The phone has two cameras - front and back, and it's exactly what you'd expect. We'll talk about the camera later, but it should be noted that the main camera is very good for a phone at this price. Or at least it's made by Microsoft. You can't expect phenomenal photos, but you won't expect terrible ones either.

One feature needs to be mentioned separately, and that feature is the SIM card slot. Microsoft has installed a Nano SIM slot on its very cheap phone. This may seem insignificant, but in reality it is not. Since size matters, Microsoft has gone to great lengths to make its device more compact. Not many cheap models can boast this, so thank Microsoft for that.

All things considered, you get more than what you pay for. Microsoft has proven that it can produce competitive products for little money, and this trend continues. Other than a few quibbles, we can't complain about the phone overall. Now let's move on to the software.

Windows 10 Mobile and Lumia 550

Lumia 550 is one of the first phones to hit the market with Windows 10 Mobile installed. This is both good and bad news at the time of writing this review. But first, a little story...

The phone came into my hands shortly before Christmas. This was not a sample provided by Microsoft, but real phone, purchased in a real store by a person not associated with journalism. That is, this is the device that will be received ordinary people, giving his money for it.

So I came home. I took the phone out of the box and set it up. On this Windows stage 10 Mobile looked pretty good. Then I opened the Store. A bunch of applications waiting to be updated, one of which was the Store itself. No updates could be downloaded.

I'm not going to cover all of my first few hours with the phone because I don't want to start something that will criticize Windows 10 Mobile. By the way, I like Windows 10 Mobile.

I just don't like the fact that the company is selling this OS on at this stage development for ordinary consumers who care about their budget. The forums advised me to cancel all updates, then update the Store and try to update the remaining applications again. It worked, but that's not the point.

I'm actually a little smart about these things. But I was ready to throw this thing out the window until someone told me a completely non-obvious solution to the problem. And this was not the only “glitch”, which, by the way, was promised to be fixed after updating the firmware. And guess what? It took me 48 hours for the firmware update to appear, download and install on the phone.

The good news is that the Lumia 550 performed much better after this. To be honest, I don't know how I would have written this review if the latter hadn't happened.

The bad news is that the experience using the device out of the box is terrible. First impressions speak volumes, and I'm already tired of hearing that updates will fix bugs and everything will work. Let me remind you that my phone is not a sample or an insider build of the OS. This is a real device for which you need to pay real money.

The Lumia 950 may be aimed at Microsoft fans who end up dealing with adversity. Fans can forgive many things. But the Lumia 550 is designed for the mass market. There is no way Microsoft can offer such a product to the mass consumer.

It gives me no pleasure to write this, but the truth cannot be hidden. I must say that the Lumia 550 did not upset me as much as the Lumia 950 did at the time. But the phone freezes too often, the main screen suddenly disappears, and the Store simply refuses to work.

And it's not even a lack of applications. I don't know what the official opinion is on this matter. I like Windows 10, I like Windows 10 Mobile, but my first impressions are not very good. This is sad because for some, first impressions can be the deciding factor and lead to a quick return of the phone.

However, if you are willing to go through the rather complex process of updates, if you are willing to wait, then most likely you will be rewarded later. When everything works, the Lumia 550 is a great phone! And not only because of its price. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between the new product and the 2014 Lumia 830, which uses the same hardware.

It's also worth noting that the Lumia 550 doesn't support Continuum. Microsoft representatives made it quite clear that this function will only be supported on flagship devices, however, we could not ignore this remark. This is not a flaw of the phone, but just an observation if anyone has asked this question.

    Camera

Usually those who buy an inexpensive phone, but at the same time want to do nice pictures, are disappointed. However, this does not apply to Microsoft because the Lumia 550 has best camera than any of its direct predecessors, which is good news.

There are several qualities in which the Lumia 550 is inferior to the camera performance of the Lumia 640. In the new model you will get a main camera with a resolution of 5 MP, LED flash and of course Windows application Camera.

While the app may be controversial for Windows fans, it works great on the Lumia 550. Autofocus is fast and accurate, and you get the popular Rich Capture mode, which was previously only available to more expensive models.

But it’s better to see once than to read a hundred times, so look at the gallery below.

The results cannot be called unsuccessful, at least for this price range. At least in good light conditions. Taking pictures in the dark is, of course, hopeless.

    Battery in Lumia 550

The battery life of the Lumia 550 is excellent for inexpensive phone with LTE. The charge lasts for a whole day of use with LTE and HSPA connections, as well as for long periods Wi-Fi usage. IN lately at Lumia phones a replaceable battery has appeared, so even if you don’t have enough 2100 mAh charge, you can replace the battery on the go with a new one when you feel that there is not enough energy.

Since we have the cheapest phone with entry-level Qualcomm hardware, we don't expect fast charging features from it. However, the battery capacity is not so large that charging from zero to 100 percent takes a long time. Maybe a couple of hours and you're back with a full charge, which isn't too bad.

Also you won't find fashionable USB-C connectors, as on more expensive models. On the other hand, this means that any of your old cables will work with your new phone. And since Microsoft only included a solid charger, you will in any case need a microUSB cable to connect to your computer.

    Price

One of the most powerful weapons in Microsoft's arsenal remains the price of the Lumia 550. Just like last year with the Lumia 640, you get quite a lot for relatively little money, and that's impressive.

In the US the cost of the new product is $139, and in the UK £99.99 if purchased directly from Microsoft. In Russia, a smartphone costs from 8,500 to 9,500 rubles.

    Verdict

So what's the bottom line? Lumia 550 great phone for your money. We do not take into account the OS, however, a fairly high-quality product for little money is worthy of respect. Microsoft has once again proven its worth in releasing entry-level devices.

However, it's hard to ignore the shortcomings software. At some moments it feels like you are using a test build of Windows 10 Mobile. In this price segment regular users would rather prefer more reliable Android devices, which in many cases offer the same hardware.

Microsoft is a huge software company, meaning they must have plenty of resources. But the first impression of using the Lumia 550 was not worthy of such a company. Of course, thanks to the software update, many bugs have been fixed and the overall experience has become better, but we cannot always expect something in the future and live in hope of the next update.

If you are willing to spend time and effort setting up your smartphone, then you will eventually own a good, inexpensive phone.

Should you buy the Lumia 550? May be.

Regarding the purchase question, here we have many factors that speak in favor of a positive answer. The Lumia 550 is a well-rounded phone that offers mid-range specs at an entry-level price.

But at the time of purchase, you must be aware that you will have to face some difficulties in purchasing Windows setup 10 Mobile. If this might stop you, it might be worth taking a closer look at older models, for example, the Lumia 640. The hardware on this smartphone is even a little better, Windows Phone 8.1 is time-tested, and you can also find it in many stores advantageous offer for this model.

If you decide to buy a new product, which is gradually appearing on sale in different parts light, make sure you choose the best deal as prices can vary significantly from one another to different places. And if you find a really good deal, let us know in the comments.

Microsoft Lumia 550 SS LTE smartphone, reviews of which we will try to review today different points view, did not become something special. This is a standard solution from the company. Not that bad, but not the best either. Compare, of course, devices on Android with the new Lumiya under Windows control 10 Mobile would not be desirable, but in its price segment the latter clearly loses in terms of characteristics. Let's first look at the device's parameters.

Microsoft Lumia 550 LTE. User reviews about characteristics

First, let's list the device parameters. The weight and size characteristics are as follows. The device measures 136.1 millimeters in height, 67.8 millimeters in width, and 9.9 mm in thickness. The weight of the device is 142 grams. In principle, according to the owners' reviews, it's not so bad. Although the ultra-thin smartphone 550 “Lumiya” is still a long way off. The user is greeted by the operating room Windows system 10 Mobile in its half-baked variation. There's nothing particularly to love about the display. It demonstrates good color rendition, but only within the segment. Diagonal - 4.7 inches.

The Qualcom Snapdragon 210 family processor will be deployed as hardware. The Microsoft Lumia 550 smartphone, reviews of which can be found in this article, runs on four cores. Otherwise, the hardware platform does not deserve special attention. Gigabyte of RAM, eight GB of built-in long-term memory for user needs. This volume will not last long.

Nokia Lumia 550, reviews of which we will provide at the end of the review, is equipped lithium-ion battery. For calls you should use a SIM card processed in nano format.

The Lumia 550, reviews of which quickly spread, has two cameras - the main one and the front camera. The device supports operation in cellular networks fourth generation. Analogue radio is built into the software. To listen to it, you will need to connect wired headphones, which will act as an antenna. From other wired and wireless interfaces one can note the presence Wi-Fi module, “Bluetooth” version 4.1, MicroUSB.

Users on many resources rated this set of characteristics as not worth the money for which the company offers the device. Buyers complain about the weak power of the hardware, insufficient RAM and very mediocre cameras. Users note that the characteristics of the subject of our today's review, as they say, are to hell. This probably explains the low demand for this product.

    Device positioning

Nokia Lumia 550 was included in the line of devices that Microsoft launched on the market running the Windows 10 Mobile operating system. This happened in 2015. In general, the development of the OS was carried out in a hurry, so it is logical that the company failed to bring it to a normal state. Moreover, very prominent people in the company suggested abandoning the plans altogether and postponing them until later. But all this meant incurring obvious significant losses, since the components for future smartphones had already been manufactured. As a result, the company’s specialists left two flagships from the entire series in order to somehow get some revenue. But still full spectrum the proposed devices were not put into production. Thus, on the eve of the release of the company’s first devices running the Windows 10 Mobile operating system, their list consisted exclusively of Lumiya 550, 950 and 950XL.

Sometimes there is no visible logic in Microsoft's actions. This can be understood, for example, by looking at the Lumiya 540. Devices running the Windows Phone operating system are not selling out as quickly as the company would like. Therefore, now in the market, Microsoft faces internal competition almost more often than external competition. For example, many models (including the previously mentioned “Lumiya 540”) bypass the subject of our today’s review in a number of characteristics. Moreover, they have a lower price. Yes, they may not be equipped with an LTE module. But they have a larger screen diagonal, a much better camera and, most importantly, stable version operating system.

    Design

Microsoft's position on this issue remains unchanged. The designers thought: “Why reinvent the wheel if there was only one concept before?” We are all accustomed to the fact that devices running the Windows Phone operating system look approximately the same. Nothing has changed in the case of Lumiya 550.

The Microsoft Lumia 550 LTE, reviews of which the reader can find in today's review, still has the same plastic body, built according to the so-called “shoe” principle. By the way, it is put on the base. If we talk about color combinations, then there is not much to mention. In this case there are only two of them. These are classic colors: white and black. As we know, Microsoft has always tried to work to offer customers the largest number of color designs for devices. However, now it was initially clear that the sales level of Lumiya 550 would be quite low. If so, then why waste extra money and time?

The smartphone fits well in the hand, one might say that it is reliable. As for the quality of the plastic, there’s not much to talk about. The quality is standard, it holds up well at first, but then scratches will definitely appear. The same drawback, by the way, appears in the screen, since safety glass not very high quality and expensive.

The upper end of the device contains a connector for wired headphones standard 3.5 millimeters. At the bottom you can find a socket for connecting a MicroUSB standard cable. On the right side there is a double key that allows you to adjust the playback volume and change the sound mode. There is also a screen lock button. The audio speaker comes out on the back cover. It is located near the camera and LED flash section.

The device opens easily. To do this, pull the body towards you. It feels like we are dealing with a case. This type of design has been tested by Microsoft on a huge number of models. And, it should be noted, it is very, very reliable. Tested by time, so to speak. Once opened, you can find a lithium-ion battery inside. There is also a slot for installing a SIM card. There is a slot for integrating an external microSD memory drive.

The engineers did not notice the speaker behind the grille. The designers also did nothing to protect it from getting clogged with dust. After some time, this element will look untidy, at least. However, no problems with the transmission of the interlocutor's voice were noticed during repeated tests. The quality will not suffer either.

    Screen

Well, what can you say about this element? Everything is pretty standard for a budget device. The display has a diagonal of 4.7 inches with a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels. This means that the picture is displayed on the screen in HD quality. IPS type matrix.

In fact, such characteristics are quite typical for a budget smartphone, and usually this is not surprising, but in the Lumiya 550 similar screen it just took root, became something integral and significant. It won't blow the user's imagination, but it copes with even quite demanding tasks truly excellently. The entire set of necessary parameters is present. There is even more than we are used to demanding from budget devices. The only negative quality of the display is its operation in sunlight. It begins to change the contrast somehow unpredictably, and if the situation with the picture is more or less good, then the text becomes difficult to read. In general, for its segment and price, the Lumiya 550 has a very high-quality screen.

    Battery

A lithium-ion battery is installed in the device as a source of autonomous operation. It is rated at 2,100 milliamps per hour. In standby mode, the smartphone can work for about one month. More precisely, 28 days. In the third generation network, operation is provided for 16 hours. You can play music for up to 60 hours. But when connecting to a point Wi-Fi access The device will last no more than a full working day. That is, 8 hours and no more. When watching a video - even less.

At standard use You can squeeze out a day or two of work from the Lumiya 550 without additional charging. But the interesting thing is that there is still no clear answer to how long the device is really capable of working. The problem here is that the operating system is not finalized. That is why different users call different numbers. By the way, you can charge the device in two hours from 0 to 100 percent.

    Communication capabilities

The user is unlikely to be happy with them, since a completely standard set of protocols and capabilities is available for “consumption”. This is, for example, Wi-Fi operating in the b, g and n bands. There is Bluetooth version 4.1 and MicroUSB. The only thing we can be happy about is the LTE module. But no more. In general, in terms of its communication capabilities, the smartphone is not superior to large number competitors in the same price category.

    Hardware platform

Inside you can find an equally standard solution presented by Microsoft. We are now talking about the Qualcom Snapdragon 210 processor. It runs on four cores. Maximum clock frequency is 1.1 gigahertz. Thanks to the chipset, the system interface works quite quickly. Although this is also typical for the company’s “template” solutions. At the same time in third party applications Stutters may occur, and a lack of power will appear in average games. As we can see, the data is not particularly impressive.

    Photo and video

The front camera of the device has a quality of 2 megapixels. There is nothing special to pay attention to here. There is no quality or additional advanced settings. The main module has a resolution of five megapixels. The camera is standard, equipped with an automatic focusing function on the subject. It takes good pictures in sunlight. However, noise becomes noticeable indoors. Nevertheless, in terms of this parameter, the Lumiya 550 is capable of “breaking” many devices running the Android OS that have camera modules with a resolution of eight megapixels.

We won't find anything special in the settings. Changing white balance, exposure, and other parameters - it's all there. But there is nothing special here, characteristic of photographic cameras. For comparison you can take Asus Zenfone 2 Laser. It's not very good example, since the device runs on Android OS. However, the Taiwanese company has invested not just money, but its soul into this phone, and it perfectly demonstrates what settings a phone equipped with cameras should have.

    Software

Now it’s time to talk about the main problem that the Microsoft Lumia 550 (Black) smartphone has, reviews of whose performance clearly do not encourage us to buy this device. Although the developers themselves tried to present it as main feature, thanks to which the company counted on its main sales. We will not go into the specifics of the OS. This topic deserves detailed consideration in a separate context. All that users should know about the operating system is that it is crude and extremely unfinished. At one time, the Windows Fawn OS also passed this stage. And if things are still bad with her, then with the new product everything is even worse. In this light, none of them looks like a worthy alternative to Android. Although the developers themselves are trying to convince us otherwise. We can talk about claims against Windows 10 Mobile for a long time. But is it worth doing this now? Let's continue our review.

    Conclusion and general impressions

If we talk about sound quality, then everything is in order. Standard for the vast majority of Microsoft devices. There is only one microphone. The vibration alert is quite quiet. But in most situations when incoming call you can still feel it.

At the beginning of sales, Microsoft Lumia 550 White, reviews of which you can find below, cost 10 thousand rubles. Almost immediately the price dropped by a thousand, since there was no tangible demand. It is quite possible that the price will fall even further in the near future. The model has a large number of internal competitors. However, the most successful of them is

Smartphone Microsoft Lumia 550. Reviews of the device

Many users who bought the device described it as “not very useful for anything.” It cannot be used for entertainment: it does not have the necessary performance. But also as a “workhorse” for calls and get-togethers international network also won’t be particularly useful: the dampness of the operating system affects fast discharge battery Who can purchase this device? Probably only the most ardent fans of the Windows operating system. In any other case, it is simply impossible to explain such a desire to use a device that, in fact, is an absolutely useless investment. There are a huge number of both external and internal competitors for the model, which for a more modest amount offer a greater range of capabilities, both operational and hardware.

We are talking about the performance of the OS, software in general, the results demonstrated by both smartphone cameras, and so on. Clinging to the screen and justifying your choice with its characteristics will also not work. It turns out that there is nothing special about the subject of our review today. And this is true. The smartphone, which was the topic of our discussion, is well suited for gatherings in social networks, reading books and articles on the Internet, but nothing more.

Lumia 550 became the first budget smartphone to run Windows 10 Mobile. Very little attention was paid to this small gadget at the presentation in early October, touching upon it only briefly. Is your device worth your attention? Microsoft Review Lumia 550 will help you figure it out.

Please note: The review contains some subjective assessments, therefore, the impressions of other users may differ from those described in this review. Our review is not the ultimate truth. Its purpose is to help you navigate and form a general impression of the device.

    1. Design and equipment.

Almost no, or rather, absolutely no revelations in terms of design happened. Here is the same plastic that has set everyone on edge, tightly fitting the insides of the device, like a bathtub. The user is offered a choice of two options – matte black or glossy white. We found the white version the most attractive. The phone is tactilely very pleasant to the touch and looks quite attractive, despite its very boring appearance. Well, what more could you want from a smartphone? The days when each model was different from each other are long gone. The black version can be taken for practical reasons - it is not so slippery and does not constantly tend to fall out of your hands.

Budget Lumia models very often suffer from a lack of structural strength, suffering from crunches, backlashes and squeezing. Oddly enough, our copy turned out to be perfectly assembled - there was nothing cracking or bending anywhere. But we were the only ones who were so lucky. Some readers of our site report that the Lumia 550 body lacks solidity a little. It is difficult to say who has the rule and who has the exception. In any case, the Lumia 550 is built well and it’s hard to deny. It fits perfectly in the hand due to its compact size. It’s a little funny that the glossy plastic of the white case is very reminiscent of the feel of the iPhone 5C. At the same time, it does not feel particularly heavy, but rather kind of knitted and dense. Fingerprints? Yes. On the glossy version. Abundantly and very much. They will be most visible on the front panel, which is black in both variants of the smartphone. As soon as you touch the Lumia 550's screen, you'll be forever trying to erase tons of grease and fingerprints from the front panel. If there is an oleophobic coating, it is very bad.

The Lumia 550 is a very plump phone, but thanks to the beveled edges, the almost 10 mm thickness does not feel critical. The edges are rounded, which makes the smartphone easy to use, and sharp corners do not cut into the user's palm. Smooth and smooth plastic seems to caress the user’s palm. Like 10 thousand rubles, the feeling is very pleasant. By the way, if you are not satisfied with the standard white or black colors, Mozo offers you a couple of bright third-party solutions that are made under the official Microsoft license.

The disadvantages of the design include a very significant jamb with the screen. When you press the screen, streaks are visible in the left middle part. Most likely, something is pressing on the matrix from behind and that’s why the screen “floats”. This is especially noticeable when entering a password from the lock screen if the brightness is turned up to maximum. It’s not noticeable on black backgrounds, but when the picture is colorful, the “waves” are clearly visible. Perhaps this is a problem with our particular specimen, but the impressions are greatly spoiled. The “floating” screen is not pleasing.

The process of removing the cover is also not implemented in the most convenient way. Almost all Lumias, except the flagship ones, suffer from this. To remove the cover from the Lumia 550, the user must literally rip off the top edge. An inconvenient and even barbaric method of opening.

Under the cover there is a 2100 mAh battery, a slot for nano-SIM cards and memory cards. This is the first time a nano-SIM has been used in a budget Lumia. The big disappointment was the lack of a second SIM card slot. Support for two cards has become the calling card (forgive the tautology) of inexpensive Lumia. For what reasons was such a solution abandoned here? Nobody knows this. But there is support for LTE networks, which is a plus of the device.

The Lumia 550 uses only 8 GB of storage, of which 7.28 GB is available, but 2.6 GB is occupied by the system. Ultimately, approximately 5 GB are allocated for your data. Few. Catastrophically few. Fortunately, there is a slot for microSD cards and the memory can be expanded using memory cards up to 200 GB. Moreover, games and applications can be installed on external storage, so there shouldn't be any memory problems.

There are not so many controls here. The system navigation keys are located on the screen, and there are only three buttons on the body – the volume rocker and the power key. They are made of very high quality. The key travel is confident and smooth. The feeling is very difficult to convey, but pressing the buttons is pleasant. This is a good implementation of controls. Plus, they are also located in a good place - the power button rests right on the thumb.

There is an audio output at the top end of the case, and a microUSB port at the bottom. Everything is classic, everything is as we are used to.

In general, there are no complaints about the design and ergonomics of the Lumia 550. Another disadvantage is the small speaker hole on the back cover. Place the device on a table or bed and your smartphone will be very difficult to hear. Some may not like the slightly protruding camera by 1 mm, but this protrusion is practically not felt.

As for the configuration, there are also some surprises here. While the flagship Lumia is equipped with a separate USB cable and charger, the Lumia 550 is poorly equipped. The box contains only the phone and charger with documents. Yes, the cable from the charger still cannot be disconnected here, and the quality of the materials is somewhere on the level of 10-cent chargers from Aliexpress. Very cheap, very unpleasant. But we are already used to it...

    2. Screen

From year to year we are convinced that the screen is almost the most important part of a smartphone. After all, does it matter what processor you have or what RAM you have if looking at the screen makes you sick? Fortunately, the Lumia 550 screen is pleasant to look at.

Let's start with the fact that there is a very high-quality IPS matrix installed here, which is located very close to the glass. Although OGS technology is not used here, the gap is almost invisible. A pleasant feeling is also added by the fact that when turned off, the screen is not gray, but completely black and merges with the front panel of the device, hiding the frames from view. And the frames here are larger – about 4 mm.

The screen resolution is ideal for a 4.7-inch diagonal. It is 1280x720 pixels with a density of 315 ppi. This is more than enough, but on particularly small objects, ladders can still be noticed. This is true only if you hold the phone close to your eyes or look at the screen with a magnifying glass. In 99% of cases, you will not notice ribbing in the text, and the detail will be pleasing to the eye. Thanks to the IPS screen, readability in the sun is simply excellent and there is enough brightness reserve for any lighting conditions. At angles, the screen practically does not lose brightness, and colors are not inverted. Without a doubt, the screen is the Lumia 550's strong point.

Despite the relatively small size of the smartphone, Microsoft took care of users who have small hands by implementing a one-handed control mode. It is activated by long pressing the home button, after which the screen slides down 50%, making interface elements more accessible. Of course, it’s completely copied from iOS, but let it work. It is also worth noting that the keys here are on-screen, therefore, they will eat up part of the already small screen space. But you can hide them at the right time by swiping up on the navigation bar, thus adding a few extra pixels to the interface.

Demanding users will be happy to find a couple here additional features. Microsoft allows you to customize color reproduction by calibrating color saturation and temperature. Automatic adjustment works properly and without jambs. You can also choose more brightness levels in the settings - 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, so the lack of manual brightness calibration is not particularly annoying. Sensitivity? This is also okay, although there is no glove control mode. In the cold you will have to expose your hand in order to interact with the phone.

It is possible to lock the screen double click to the navigation panel, but there is no double tap to wake up here and this is very sad. It is not even available in the flagship Lumia 950/950 XL.

It is worth noting the ability to change the scale of text and operating system interface elements. In the screen settings you have access to a special slider that adjusts the sizes from 150% (why not 100?) to 225 percent. By setting the minimum value, the system will change not only the sizes of text and buttons, but also the notification center, as well as the multitasking window. The first will have five switches, and on one task manager page you will see not one, but four applications. Additionally, three columns of tiles will be displayed by default, but you can enable a fourth. Although the screen is small, the four columns of tiles look great and getting to the smallest tiles is easy. By the way, if the application is optimized for Windows 10 Mobile, it will adjust the interface size to the selected scaling.

Microsoft decided not to deprive the smartphone of the proprietary Glance function, although it is implemented in a very strange way. Yes, the clock, date and notifications are still displayed here, but in the dark this mode begins to behave strangely. Under normal lighting, the brightness of the screensaver is sufficient for comfortable viewing of information, but when there is complete darkness around you (at night, for example), the smartphone so greatly reduces the brightness of the displayed text that it is almost impossible to see it, especially if you wake up in the middle of the night and are trying to see with sleepy eyes time. Bug or feature? We hope that this is a bug, otherwise the meaning of the splash screen almost completely disappears.

In general, if you don’t find fault, you can safely give the Lumia 550 an “excellent” screen. He pleases, he is pleasant and this is definitely good.

    3. Camera

If the start of the review was positive and positive, things get a little more prosaic when it comes to the camera. She's not bad, but not good either. And it’s not so much the module’s fault, but rather the unfinished software. But first, about the numbers. On the back of the device, framed by a metal ring, there is a peephole of a 5 MP camera with f/2.4 optics.

Focus doesn't take long in relatively normal lighting, but the photos still take a long time to process in the gallery. Yes, you can take the next photo almost immediately, but once you go to the gallery you will have to wait until the phone finishes processing the image. In principle, when viewing a photo on a phone screen, the quality of the photo can be described as very good, but when you open the image on a computer, you will immediately notice an excessive amount of noise. And since the noise reduction is actively trying to combat all this, the final picture will suffer in detail and will look more like mush than something passable. In bright sunlight or in cloudy weather with the Lumia 550 you can take a decent picture with very good sharpness, but when it gets a little dark, everything becomes very bad. Noise, loss of sharpness, detail, brightness... The Lumia 550 camera is only for well-lit scenes.

Turning on the flash can help the situation a little, especially since there is Rich Capture capability. It allows you to edit the intensity of light in a photo, thus removing the necessary highlights. Previously, this was the prerogative of exclusively older models. It's nice that the developers took the time to implement it in the Lumia 550. However, you shouldn't expect miracles. There is a single LED installed here, which will not miss the stars from the sky. The output image shows highlighted noise rather than a highlighted scene.

The Lumia 550's camera can be praised for its excellent macro. It focuses almost point to point and if you shoot some grass, flowers or insects in the sun, the result will be quite good.

A small bonus is support for the so-called “Living Image” or “Live Photos”. In addition to photographs, the smartphone will take a couple of seconds of video. A similar feature has been available in Lumia smartphones for a long time and recently appeared in the iPhone (revolution!). This is pure self-indulgence, which carries virtually no payload. Fortunately, this option is disabled in the settings.

There is an interval shooting mode when the smartphone takes photos at intervals of 2, 5 or 10 seconds. This mode allows you to create Timelapse videos. True, the photos will then have to be glued together in the appropriate editors on the computer. Hasn't gone anywhere and continuous shooting, which can be activated by long pressing the shutter button on the screen.

The smartphone can shoot video, but the weak processor does not allow you to play around in FullHD, so you will only be able to shoot in 720P 30 frames per second. The video taken is difficult to describe. It just exists and you shouldn’t expect anything special from it.

Front camera? Yes, I have. And this is the main thing. 2 MP without autofocus. You can even shoot 480p video. On the street you will be able to take quite a selfie, but indoors everything is bad - a continuous mess of noise.

    Examples of photos:

    4. Autonomous operation

It would seem that the 2100 mAh battery of the Lumia 550 should provide quite adequate autonomous operation for a small screen with the same small resolution. But something went wrong. The Lumia 550 is far from a benchmark in longevity. Yes, throughout the day it will withstand all the obligations assigned to it and even leave about 15-20% of the battery at the end, but you will have to reliably charge the devices every evening. Why? The thing is that in standby mode the smartphone eats up the battery like crazy. It won’t be difficult for him to eat up about 25% overnight. During testing, we once encountered a situation where a smartphone charged at 30% died completely overnight, turned off and did not wake up in the morning.

The reason for this is very obvious - bad Windows optimization 10 Mobile, still a raw operating system. Hopefully Microsoft will release a firmware update that will fix the situation.

The included charger (1A) takes a long time to charge the phone. No, really, for a very long time. More than four hours. Fast charging, as you already understood, is not supported here. No and wireless charging. So big time charging is depressing and if you have a charger at home with a high output current, it is better to use third party solution or charge the Lumia 550 exclusively at night.

    5. Software

Attention: hardcore fans Windows is better refrain from reading the following text, as it contains an overwhelming amount of negativity, motivated too much a large number bugs in the system.

The Lumia 550 is the first budget smartphone to come with Windows 10 Mobile right out of the box. Once you activate your smartphone, you will see that it is running on Windows build 10 Mobile Build 10586.00. You will receive several updates immediately. The process of downloading and installing them is very unpleasant. Updates take a long time to download and install about the same. What's interesting: when downloading updates, the store does not work. Loading applications freezes and until you install (or at least download) everything available updates, you won’t be able to install exactly any of the applications. This is very frustrating and even nerve-wracking because you can’t start using the device right away.

Although the Snapdragon 210 copes well with system tasks and runs more or less smoothly, Windows 10 Mobile is still very buggy. There are a lot of glitches and the proprietary browser suffers the most Microsoft Edge. Very often it loads just a white page without really displaying the content, or half of it. You scroll below and instead of continuing the article or any other information, you are suddenly faced with a blank screen that takes a couple of seconds to load. Moreover, the browser does not know how to keep tabs in the background. No, he can’t do it at all. And the problem is not the 1 GB of RAM. Smartphones running Windows Phone 8.1 with 512 MB of RAM even worked better with multiple sites. You don't even have to open two tabs (let alone more). Just open the page and minimize the browser. When you try to return to Microsoft Edge, the page will completely reload.

For some reason, clicking on links works very poorly, and in order to go to another page, sometimes you have to tap on it several times. Enter the address in the line and click the go button. In 90% of cases, the browser will start loading the page, but will not close the on-screen keyboard. There are so many bugs here that the average user may want to simply break their smartphone. We try to avoid such language, but the performance is simply disgusting. And this is just the browser...

Applications take a very long time to open... a VERY long time. So long that while loading a game or program, the desire to open it simply disappears. It also takes a long time for the store to launch, and in the vast majority of cases you will encounter download errors or application updates and will have to start the process again.

Early adopters of Windows Phone 8.1 probably remember the pain of losing a beautiful and convenient music player in Windows Phone 8.0 and the rudeness that appeared in Windows Phone 8.1. With Windows 10 Mobile the situation is slightly better. The app is convenient and even beautiful, but damn, it still has a lot of bugs. The biggest complaint is that trying to play the album leads to... Um, but it leads, strictly speaking, to nothing. The music just won't turn on, displaying empty list playback Try again and, if you're lucky enough, the music will start. Another scenario: turn on a specific track, the phone will think as if it is downloading music from the cloud and... Play another song, skipping the selected song for no reason. Why? Nobody knows this. Similar leapfrog is observed in many applications. Bugs appear out of the blue, where you least expect them.

It may seem that we are deliberately “hating” the smartphone, but here we describe the bugs that we encountered regularly. Random crashes, freezes and freezes are not taken into account here.

This is all very sad. True, there is hope that someday all this will be brought to life, since each application can be updated through the store.

If you buy a Lumia 550 (this also applies to the Lumia 950/950 XL), you'll have to deal with the device constantly begging you for reviews. About once every two days, the phone application (dialer) asks you to rate it. Seriously, Microsoft? Contact book, photos, music player, messages and so on. All this is constantly whining about ratings, asking for five stars and so on. It doesn’t matter at all whether you evaluated it or not. Review pop-ups will appear constantly, getting on the user's nerves. The situation in Microsoft Health is generally fatal. By clicking on the "cancel" button, the dialog box will close and open again. And so on ten times, until the user, driven to white heat, closes the application in rage.

Yes, that's understandable. Windows 10 Mobile is currently in its infancy and the company needs to collect feedback on usage. But you can’t ask for this every day in every application and 100 times. Very, very annoying.

We also encountered an extremely unpleasant bug when, after a conversation ends, the screen stops responding to any actions. He just dies and that's it. You have to lock your phone and unlock it again.

Bugs, bugs and more bugs. There are a lot of bugs. Bugs are everywhere.

You can also criticize the operating system for its design. Everything looks more modern and even beautiful, but there are several paradoxes that simply make blood flow from the eyes. For example, contact avatars are now designed in circles rather than squares. Microsoft, what substances inspire your designers? In a system where everything on the home screen is square, do you put profile photos in circles? Try pinning a contact to your home screen. Even the most picky user will howl here. It looks absolutely terrible. What's next? Round tiles like on the Apple Watch?

Windows 10 Mobile now has the ability to set a picture instead of a black background. It looks pretty good even if the tiles are arranged correctly home screen it will look very beautiful. But. Again, but... Many system applications cannot boast of transparent tiles. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Weather, Finance, News, Microsoft Health... All of these apps have opaque tiles and when you have the vast majority of tiles transparent, suddenly Word with its blue fill brings total disharmony to the home screen.

Yes, in all the paragraphs above we did nothing but criticize the Lumia 550 for its disgusting performance. Smoothness and stability, unity of design and absolute glitch-free operation. All this is already in the past. The Lumia 550 buyer will feel like a guinea pig as Microsoft will test more on it earlier version Windows 10 Mobile, from time to time changing something, breaking something, and deleting something altogether. In the future, all this will be corrected and improved... In the future. But we live in the present, not in the future. We need to put up with bugs now. And it’s very difficult to reconcile, because bugs are damned everywhere. Microsoft, you ruined your beloved Windows Phone. Sad, very sad.

It is necessary to mention several positive aspects of the Lumia 550 software. Fortunately, they are there. For example, interactive notifications have been introduced into the system, and you can respond to messages or in applications that are already optimized (and there are already some), directly from the curtain or a push notification that pops up at the top. It's so convenient that once you try it, you'll be very annoyed by apps that don't support interactive notifications.

In the notification center, there is now the ability to expand and access all settings, not just a selected four or five. There are also options for a flashlight, a quick note in OneNote, a mobile hotspot, and so on. Using the notification center has become much more convenient.

I am pleased with the availability of complete and high-quality Office programs. Forget about the outdated and completely inconvenient Office in Windows Phone 8.1, which has not been improved since the very first Windows versions Phone. Now the system is normal and modern applications, which are easily updated through the store and optimized for any screen. They also brought, lo and behold, a new clock application, which, in addition to alarm clocks, also has a world time, a stopwatch and a timer. You need so little to be happy...

Finally, Microsoft has worked on landscape mode. By turning your smartphone, you will truly see user-friendly interface. For example, in the SMS application, messages will be displayed in the left column, and a list of dialogues in the right. The same will happen in the settings. By the way, about the settings. There is complete order here now. Everything is located in categories with icons, and a search has appeared on the main window.

What else can you praise Windows 10 Mobile for? It has an analogue of iMessage. Skype is integrated directly into the messaging apps and you don't need to install it separate application. Although the paradox is that Microsoft is pushing old client Skype from Windows Phone 8.1, pre-installed out of the box on the Lumia 550. Why, Microsoft, why???

For the Lumia 550 buyer, the presence of special sensor SensorCore. Its purpose is to collect data about your movement. This data is sent not to the CIA, but to special application Microsoft Health. From it you can monitor your activity, the number of steps taken and calories burned. This is a kind of fitness tracker built into your smartphone. At the same time, the data is measured much more accurately than in applications that use an accelerometer and GPS to calculate similar data.

    6. Gaming performance

The performance is quite as expected. The Lumia 550 handles casual and simple 3D games quite well. Cut the Rope, Temple Run 2, Angry Birds (if anyone else plays this) will work without any glitches or freezes. But when it comes to more heavy games, everything becomes sad again. In GTA: San Andreas You can play only by turning all settings to minimum. In this case, the picture will turn into complete despondency from low resolution, lack of shadows, ladders and low drawing distance. Asphalt 8 is also playable only on minimal graphics and sometimes with freezes. World of Tanks Blitz we're just passing by. No, it's not worth playing on the Lumia 550, even with minimal settings. Definitely not gaming smartphone. The Snapdragon 210 is simply not strong enough for such tasks.

    7. Like a phone

First of all, the Lumia 550 is a phone, and therefore should make intelligent calls, as well as transmit and receive high quality sound. Everything is fine with this. Of course, it all depends on the operator you use and the quality of the network, but the Lumia 550 will provide you good quality sound. There are no complaints about the microphone either. With its help, you can even record good quality audio notes in the voice recorder application built into the system. True, there is only one microphone and there is no noise reduction as such.

What you can't take away from the Lumia 550 is the sound quality in the headphones. Again, the results will depend on what headphones you use. But the Lumia 550 copes with the task of the player perfectly. Firstly, the battery plays music on a single charge for a very long time. Secondly, the volume and quality are on high level. There is also an equalizer built into the system for more fine tuning sound quality. But any amplifiers or improvements, like in the Lumia 640, were not added to the Lumia 550 firmware.

You should also not ignore the opportunity that Windows Phone enthusiasts have been asking Microsoft for years. We are talking about the ability to record voice calls. You can find out how to do this in the separate instructions "".

Who can I recommend this smartphone to? The Lumia 550 can be recommended for those users who are interested in taking a look at Windows 10 Mobile without shelling out 50 thousand for a flagship device. The price of the Lumia 550 is very affordable and the smartphone can offer the vast majority Windows features 10 Mobile. But you must take into account that you will encounter a large number of bugs. Further devices will be less buggy as the operating system continues to evolve and develop. Lumia 550 is the first sign to fall victim to overly buggy software. The smartphone will also serve as a good service for those who need a second dialer. For enthusiasts, the Lumia 550 is not recommended for purchase, since the smartphone cannot offer anything that the current ones do not have Windows Phone devices, updated to Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview.

In short, the Lumia 550 is a relatively good device, with hopelessly flawed software.

    We liked:

    • Excellent case materials and assembly.
    • Great screen.
    • Excellent sound quality.
    • Availability of SensorCore

    We didn't like:

    • Too many bugs (especially the terrible browser).
    • Sometimes the battery is inadequate and the charging time is too long.
    • "Floating screen"

    Final score:

    • Case quality - 4/5
    • Design - 3/5
    • Screen - 4/5
    • Battery - 3/5
    • Software - 1/5
    • Sound quality - 5/5
    • Camera - 3/5

The appearance of Windows 10 also marked the release of the first smartphones on this platform. Much attention was paid to the real flagships in this segment - Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. Due to this circumstance, the emergence of more affordable, in terms of price category, models turned out to be somewhat unnoticed.

It's about Microsoft smartphone Lumia 550, which has already become popular in its segment, because it costs less than some smartphones running Windows 10 Mobile, but is not inferior in many ways to its capabilities. Now the price issue is becoming the most important in choosing not only smartphones, but also all digital equipment.

    Lumia 550 design

Microsoft Lumia 550 is quite similar to other Lumia models appearance. However, it is presented in a rather modest color scheme - black and white. Thus, the decision was made to abandon the colorful color panels that characterized the line before Lumia.

The body itself is made of polycarbonate, a material that is traditionally used in relatively inexpensive models. Lumia 550, available in white, has a glossy back cover, and the black model has a matte surface. On the right side there are buttons responsible for adjusting the volume and turning off the power, and left side turned out to be completely empty.

By removing the cover from the back, you have free access to the device’s battery, as well as the slots for the MicroSD card and Nano cards SIM. Considering that the built-in memory is only 8 GB, using a memory card is advisable - the device supports up to 128 GB.

    Limitless possibilities with Lumia 550

The Lumia 550 smartphone is equipped with the most latest versions applications familiar to everyone - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. All of them are specially optimized specifically for use on modern smartphones. An improved version of the Outlook Mail application allows you to fully work with your mail while on the road.

The use of Windows 10 OS in this smartphone allows you to access those applications that are familiar to many from working with them on a computer. We are talking not only about the usual package, such as Office, but also about the OneDrive application, which allows you to store your most important information in the cloud completely free of charge. various information. In addition, accessing these files is very easy and you can easily edit or view them on your device.

    Always in touch

Microsoft Lumia 550 supports 4G network, which allows it to exchange data at really high speeds, typical for LTE networks. And this is not just a certain technical characteristic, but a clear advantage at this price, because thanks to this feature, you can easily solve complex problems many times faster and more efficiently. It is the use of 4G that allows you to seamlessly watch and download big videos, without waiting for a long time to load. It is this circumstance that significantly distinguishes smartphones that support this network, from devices working with the 3G network.
