The good news is that the Lumia 550 performed much better after this. To be honest, I don't know how I would have written this review if the latter hadn't happened.

The bad news is that the experience using the device out of the box is terrible. First impressions speak volumes, and I'm already tired of hearing that updates will fix bugs and everything will work. Let me remind you that my phone is not a sample or an insider build of the OS. This is a real device for which you need to pay real money.

The Lumia 950 may be aimed at Microsoft fans who end up dealing with adversity. Fans can forgive many things. But the Lumia 550 is designed for the mass market. There is no way Microsoft can offer such a product to the mass consumer.

It gives me no pleasure to write this, but the truth cannot be hidden. I must say that the Lumia 550 did not upset me as much as the Lumia 950 did at the time. But the phone freezes too often, the main screen suddenly disappears, and the Store simply refuses to work.

And it's not even a lack of applications. I don't know what the official opinion is on this matter. I like Windows 10, I like Windows 10 Mobile, but my first impressions are not very good. This is sad because for some, first impressions can be the deciding factor and lead to a quick return of the phone.

However, if you are willing to go through the rather complex process of updates, if you are willing to wait, then most likely you will be rewarded later. When everything works, the Lumia 550 is a great phone! And not only because of its price. The black version can be taken for practical reasons - it is not so slippery and does not constantly tend to fall out of your hands.

Budget Lumia models very often suffer from a lack of structural strength, suffering from crunches, backlashes and squeezing. Oddly enough, our copy turned out to be perfectly assembled - there was nothing cracking or bending anywhere. But we were the only ones who were so lucky. Some readers of our site report that the Lumia 550 body lacks solidity a little. It is difficult to say who has the rule and who has the exception. In any case, the Lumia 550 is built well and it’s hard to deny. It fits perfectly in the hand due to its compact size. It’s a little funny that the glossy plastic of the white case is very reminiscent of the feel of the iPhone 5C. At the same time, it does not feel particularly heavy, but rather kind of knitted and dense. Fingerprints? Yes. On the glossy version. Abundantly and very much. They will be most visible on the front panel, which is black in both variants of the smartphone. As soon as you touch the Lumia 550's screen, you'll be forever trying to erase tons of grease and fingerprints from the front panel. If there is an oleophobic coating, it is very bad.

The Lumia 550 is a very plump phone, but thanks to the beveled edges, the almost 10 mm thickness does not feel critical. The edges are rounded, which makes the smartphone easy to use, and sharp corners do not cut into the user's palm. Smooth and smooth plastic seems to caress the user’s palm. Like 10 thousand rubles, the feeling is very pleasant. By the way, if you are not satisfied with the standard white or black colors, Mozo offers you a couple of bright third-party solutions that are made under the official Microsoft license.

The disadvantages of the design include a very significant jamb with the screen. When you press the screen, streaks are visible in the left middle part. Most likely, something is pressing on the matrix from behind and that’s why the screen “floats”. This is especially noticeable when entering a password from the lock screen if the brightness is turned up to maximum. It’s not noticeable on black backgrounds, but when the picture is colorful, the “waves” are clearly visible. Perhaps this is a problem with our particular specimen, but the impressions are greatly spoiled. The “floating” screen is not pleasing.

The process of removing the cover is also not implemented in the most convenient way. Almost all Lumias, except the flagship ones, suffer from this. To remove the cover from the Lumia 550, the user must literally rip off the top edge. An inconvenient and even barbaric method of opening.

Under the cover there is a 2100 mAh battery, a slot for nano-SIM cards and memory cards. This is the first time a nano-SIM has been used in a budget Lumia. The big disappointment was the lack of a second SIM card slot. Support for two cards has become the calling card (forgive the tautology) of inexpensive Lumia. For what reasons was such a solution abandoned here? Nobody knows this. But there is support for LTE networks, which is a plus of the device.

The Lumia 550 uses only 8 GB of storage, of which 7.28 GB is available, but 2.6 GB is occupied by the system. Ultimately, approximately 5 GB are allocated for your data. Few. Catastrophically few. Fortunately, there is a slot for microSD cards and the memory can be expanded using memory cards up to 200 GB. Moreover, games and applications can be installed on external storage, so there shouldn't be any memory problems.

There are not so many controls here. The system navigation keys are located on the screen, and there are only three buttons on the body – the volume rocker and the power key. They are made of very high quality. The key travel is confident and smooth. The feeling is very difficult to convey, but pressing the buttons is pleasant. This is a good implementation of controls. Plus, they are also located in a good place - the power button rests right on the thumb.

There is an audio output at the top end of the case, and a microUSB port at the bottom. Everything is classic, everything is as we are used to.

In general, there are no complaints about the design and ergonomics of the Lumia 550. Another disadvantage is the small speaker hole on the back cover. Place the device on a table or bed and your smartphone will be very difficult to hear. Some may not like the slightly protruding camera by 1 mm, but this protrusion is practically not felt.

As for the configuration, there are also some surprises here. While the flagship Lumia is equipped with a separate USB cable and charger, the Lumia 550 is poorly equipped. The box contains only the phone and charger with documents. Yes, the cable from the charger still cannot be disconnected here, and the quality of the materials is somewhere on the level of 10-cent chargers from Aliexpress. Very cheap, very unpleasant. But we are already used to it...

2. Screen

From year to year we are convinced that the screen is almost the most important part of a smartphone. After all, does it matter what processor you have or what RAM you have if looking at the screen makes you sick? Fortunately, the Lumia 550 screen is pleasant to look at.

Let's start with the fact that there is a very high-quality IPS matrix installed here, which is located very close to the glass. Although OGS technology is not used here, the gap is almost invisible. A pleasant feeling is also added by the fact that when turned off, the screen is not gray, but completely black and merges with the front panel of the device, hiding the frames from view. And the frames here are larger – about 4 mm.

The screen resolution is ideal for a 4.7-inch diagonal. It is 1280x720 pixels with a density of 315 ppi. This is more than enough, but on particularly small objects, ladders can still be noticed. This is true only if you hold the phone close to your eyes or look at the screen with a magnifying glass. In 99% of cases, you will not notice ribbing in the text, and the detail will be pleasing to the eye. Thanks to the IPS screen, readability in the sun is simply excellent and there is enough brightness reserve for any lighting conditions. At angles, the screen practically does not lose brightness, and colors are not inverted. Without a doubt, the screen is the Lumia 550's strong point.

Despite the relatively small size of the smartphone, Microsoft took care of users who have small hands by implementing a one-handed control mode. It is activated by long pressing the home button, after which the screen slides down 50%, making interface elements more accessible. Of course, it’s completely copied from iOS, but let it work. It is also worth noting that the keys here are on-screen, therefore, they will eat up part of the already small screen space. But you can hide them at the right time by swiping up on the navigation bar, thus adding a few extra pixels to the interface.

Demanding users will be happy to find a couple here additional features. Microsoft allows you to customize color reproduction by calibrating color saturation and temperature. Automatic adjustment works properly and without jambs. You can also choose more brightness levels in the settings - 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, so the lack of manual brightness calibration is not particularly annoying. Sensitivity? This is also okay, although there is no glove control mode. In the cold you will have to expose your hand in order to interact with the phone.

It is possible to lock the screen double click to the navigation panel, but there is no double tap to wake up here and this is very sad. It is not even available in the flagship Lumia 950/950 XL.

It is worth noting the ability to change the scale of text and operating system interface elements. In the screen settings you have access to a special slider that adjusts the sizes from 150% (why not 100?) to 225 percent. By setting the minimum value, the system will change not only the sizes of text and buttons, but also the notification center, as well as the multitasking window. The first will have five switches, and on one task manager page you will see not one, but four applications. Additionally, three columns of tiles will be displayed by default, but you can enable a fourth. Although the screen is small, the four columns of tiles look great and getting to the smallest tiles is easy. By the way, if the application is optimized for Windows 10 Mobile, it will adjust the interface size to the selected scaling.

Microsoft decided not to deprive the smartphone of the proprietary Glance function, although it is implemented in a very strange way. Yes, the clock, date and notifications are still displayed here, but in the dark this mode begins to behave strangely. Under normal lighting, the brightness of the screensaver is sufficient for comfortable viewing of information, but when there is complete darkness around you (at night, for example), the smartphone so greatly reduces the brightness of the displayed text that it is almost impossible to see it, especially if you wake up in the middle of the night and are trying to see with sleepy eyes time. Bug or feature? We hope that this is a bug, otherwise the meaning of the splash screen almost completely disappears.

In general, if you don’t find fault, you can safely give the Lumia 550 an “excellent” screen. He pleases, he is pleasant and this is definitely good.

3. Camera

If the start of the review was positive and positive, things get a little more prosaic when it comes to the camera. She's not bad, but not good either. And it’s not so much the module’s fault, but rather the unfinished software. But first, about the numbers. On the back of the device, framed by a metal ring, there is a peephole of a 5 MP camera with f/2.4 optics.

Focus doesn't take long in relatively normal lighting, but the photos still take a long time to process in the gallery. Yes, you can take the next photo almost immediately, but once you go to the gallery you will have to wait until the phone finishes processing the image. In principle, when viewing a photo on a phone screen, the quality of the photo can be described as very good, but when you open the image on a computer, you will immediately notice an excessive amount of noise. And since the noise reduction is actively trying to combat all this, the final picture will suffer in detail and will look more like mush than something passable. In bright sunlight or in cloudy weather with the Lumia 550 you can take a decent picture with very good sharpness, but when it gets a little dark, everything becomes very bad. Noise, loss of sharpness, detail, brightness... The Lumia 550 camera is only for well-lit scenes.

Turning on the flash can help the situation a little, especially since there is Rich Capture capability. It allows you to edit the intensity of light in a photo, thus removing the necessary highlights. Previously, this was the prerogative of exclusively older models. It's nice that the developers took the time to implement it in the Lumia 550. However, you shouldn't expect miracles. There is a single LED installed here, which will not miss the stars from the sky. The output image shows highlighted noise rather than a highlighted scene.

The Lumia 550's camera can be praised for its excellent macro. It focuses almost point to point and if you shoot some grass, flowers or insects in the sun, the result will be quite good.

A small bonus is support for the so-called “Living Image” or “Live Photos”. In addition to photographs, the smartphone will take a couple of seconds of video. A similar feature has been available in Lumia smartphones for a long time and recently appeared in the iPhone (revolution!). This is pure self-indulgence, which carries virtually no payload. Fortunately, this option is disabled in the settings.

There is an interval shooting mode when the smartphone takes photos at intervals of 2, 5 or 10 seconds. This mode allows you to create Timelapse videos. True, the photos will then have to be glued together in the appropriate editors on the computer. Hasn't gone anywhere and continuous shooting, which can be activated by long pressing the shutter button on the screen.

The smartphone can shoot video, but the weak processor does not allow you to play around in FullHD, so you will only be able to shoot in 720P 30 frames per second. The video taken is difficult to describe. It just exists and you shouldn’t expect anything special from it.

Front camera? Yes, I have. And this is the main thing. 2 MP without autofocus. You can even shoot 480p video. On the street you will be able to take quite a selfie, but indoors everything is bad - a continuous mess of noise.

4. Autonomous operation

It would seem that the 2100 mAh battery of the Lumia 550 should provide quite adequate autonomous operation for a small screen with the same small resolution. But something went wrong. The Lumia 550 is far from a benchmark in longevity. Yes, throughout the day it will withstand all the obligations assigned to it and even leave about 15-20% of the battery at the end, but you will have to reliably charge the devices every evening. Why? The thing is that in standby mode the smartphone eats up the battery like crazy. It won’t be difficult for him to eat up about 25% overnight. During testing, we once encountered a situation where a smartphone charged at 30% died completely overnight, turned off and did not wake up in the morning.

The reason for this is very obvious - bad Windows optimization 10 Mobile, still a raw operating system. Hopefully Microsoft will release a firmware update that will fix the situation.

The included charger (1A) takes a long time to charge the phone. No, really, for a very long time. More than four hours. Fast charging, as you already understood, is not supported here. No and wireless charging. So big time charging is depressing and if you have a charger at home with a high output current, it is better to use third party solution or charge the Lumia 550 exclusively at night.

5. Software

You scroll below and instead of continuing the article or any other information, you are suddenly faced with a blank screen that takes a couple of seconds to load. Moreover, the browser does not know how to keep tabs in the background. No, he can’t do it at all. And the problem is not the 1 GB of RAM. Smartphones running Windows Phone 8.1 with 512 MB of RAM even worked better with multiple sites. You don't even have to open two tabs (let alone more). Just open the page and minimize the browser. When you try to return to Microsoft Edge, the page will completely reload.

For some reason, clicking on links works very poorly, and in order to go to another page, sometimes you have to tap on it several times. Enter the address in the line and click the go button. In 90% of cases, the browser will start loading the page, but will not close the on-screen keyboard. There are so many bugs here that the average user may want to simply break their smartphone. We try to avoid such language, but the performance is simply disgusting. And this is just the browser...

Applications take a very long time to open... a VERY long time. So long that while loading a game or program, the desire to open it simply disappears. It also takes a long time for the store to launch, and in the vast majority of cases you will encounter download errors or application updates and will have to start the process again.

Early adopters of Windows Phone 8.1 probably remember the pain of losing a beautiful and convenient music player in Windows Phone 8.0 and the rudeness that appeared in Windows Phone 8.1. With Windows 10 Mobile the situation is slightly better. The app is convenient and even beautiful, but damn, it still has a lot of bugs. The biggest complaint is that trying to play the album leads to... Um, but it leads, strictly speaking, to nothing. It is necessary to mention several positive aspects of the Lumia 550 software. Fortunately, they are there. 7. Like a phone

First of all, the Lumia 550 is a phone, and therefore should make intelligent calls, as well as transmit and receive high quality sound. Everything is fine with this. Of course, it all depends on the operator you use and the quality of the network, but the Lumia 550 will provide you good quality sound. There are no complaints about the microphone either. With its help, you can even record good quality audio notes in the voice recorder application built into the system. True, there is only one microphone and there is no noise reduction as such.

What you can't take away from the Lumia 550 is the sound quality in the headphones. Again, the results will depend on what headphones you use. But the Lumia 550 copes with the task of the player perfectly. Firstly, the battery plays music on a single charge for a very long time. Secondly, the volume and quality are on high level. There is also an equalizer built into the system for more fine tuning sound quality. But any amplifiers or improvements, like in the Lumia 640, were not added to the Lumia 550 firmware.
