• Network installation programs. Program to increase Internet speed TCP Optimizer

    Choosing a dial-up device is, of course, very important for surfing the Internet. Good modem provides a more stable connection with the provider, and also better speed data transfer. However, you should not think that the quality of your Internet connection depends only on the modem.

    Modern modems come in two types: external and internal. External modem- this is a device that has its own housing; it is placed on the system unit or next to it and connected special cable to a COM or USB port. The internal modem is connected to motherboard V system unit computer. Much more convenient and reliable to use external devices, the operation of which can always be observed, guided by indicator lights.

    Most modems produced today can operate at speeds up to 56 Kbps, and also have error correction and data compression functions. The price range for modems is very high (from $14 to $180). This trend is due to the absence of some additional parameters in cheaper models:

    Noise immunity of the modem (ability to work with telephone lines low quality);

    Answering machine;

    Call forwarding;

    Possibility of receiving faxes when the computer is turned off, etc.

    The user is unlikely to need all the additional features, so when choosing a modem it is worth considering whether to pay money for additional functions.

    ATTENTION

    When buying a modem, you need to pay attention to its main capabilities - speed, error correction and compression support.

    The price of a modem can be significantly influenced by its other characteristics:

    Price software supplied with the device;

    The ability to change the modem firmware, which will allow it to use new operating protocols or expand its functions.

    Before purchasing a modem, you need to find out the quality of the telephone line with which it will work. If it low level, then you need a modem with increased noise immunity.

    The device speed specified by the manufacturer is the maximum amount of data transfer that it supports. If the modem says 33.6 Kbps (V.34 protocol) or 56 Kbps (V.90 protocol), this does not mean at all that the speed of its operation in each specific case will be exactly that. In practice, as a rule, it will be lower, and exactly how much depends not only on the modem, but also on the quality of the telephone line. Real (without losses associated with error correction) speed of 56 Kbit/s is very rarely achieved even in good switched communication lines.

    ATTENTION

    When choosing a modem, you should remember that the speed and quality of its operation are determined not only by the parameters of the device itself, but often, and even in to a greater extent, telephone line and PBX to which it is connected.

    In Russia and other post-Soviet countries there are telephone exchanges following types.

    New generation digital PBXs providing high quality communication, which may deteriorate due to poor-quality connecting line from the subscriber to the station. When working with such PBXs, using almost any modem that supports the V.90 protocol, you can achieve connection speeds of up to 52 Kbps.

    Old generation electronic PBXs that support little worst connection than stations of the previous category. In addition to the connecting line, in this case the connection is affected by the quality of the setup of the subscriber kit on the PBX. With the help of such stations you can achieve connection speeds of up to 30–40 Kbps.

    Old analogue PBXs, on which the connection speed can be from 4.8 to 33.6 Kbps. Sometimes the cheapest modem models may not contact the provider at all.

    The modem of users who have a telephone number on a PBX of the first category will most likely work successfully with the default settings. Otherwise, you will almost certainly need to limit the maximum communication speed of the modem.

    In theory, modems should automatically select the optimal connection speed. However, on a low-quality line, they often try to keep the speed higher than necessary, as a result of which the connection is interrupted. In addition, due to constant attempts to connect to high speed and adjust its data exchange efficiency approaches zero.

    Often one of the reasons for unstable or slow communication can be parallel telephone sets connected to the modem. This is especially true for older models with a rotary dialing method or cheap devices that do not meet any standards at all. The presence of such devices may negatively affect the connection if for some reason the parallel phone is picked up. The signal coming from the Network will be significantly distorted, and the modem’s communication speed may drop to almost zero or the device will turn off altogether.

    It is better to connect the phone to the PHONE socket on the modem itself. In this case, the phone will turn off during communication and will not affect the quality of the modem connection.

    Communication quality can be affected by various electromagnetic interference, affecting the telephone wire, which can reduce the speed of Internet access by one and a half to two times. To get rid of wiring problems, it is best to run the telephone line along the shortest path from the telephone jack to the modem. It is also necessary to ensure that the telephone wire does not intersect with network cables 220 W (leading, for example, to sockets). At the same time, the length of the line should be as minimal as possible. If parallel telephones are also used, then they should be connected only after the modem.

    1.2. Optimizing connection at the operating system level

    In Windows XP there is a special QoS service RSVP, which reserves up to 20% bandwidth Internet connections for some network applications. If you disable this service, your Internet speed may increase.

    This can be done in the window Group Policy. To get to this window, select Run from the Start menu and enter the gpedit.msc command in the Run a program window. In the window that opens, go to the Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Network\QoS Packet Manager section and double-click on the Limit reserved bandwidth line. The constraint properties window will open, in which, on the Parameter tab, you need to change the position of the switch. If it is set to Enabled, then in the Bandwidth Limit field you need to reduce its value from 20% to 0 or simply set the switch to Disabled.

    1.3. How to set up auto dialer

    The auto-dial feature allows an existing connection to automatically dial a phone number and connect to the provider in the event of a disconnection, as well as any attempt to access network data. To set up auto-dialing, in the Control Panel you need to select the Network and Internet connections category, highlight required connection, then run the command More?Options remote access. To set auto-dialing in the Enable auto-dialing for: area, you need to check the dialing box (Fig. 1.1).

    Rice. 1.1. Setting up auto dialer

    In addition, in the Internet connection properties window, on the Settings tab, in the Number of dialing repetitions section, enter, for example, 100 and click OK. Now, if the line is suddenly busy, the modem will automatically call back.

    NOTE

    The function described above will work provided that your modem detects a busy signal on the telephone line.

    1.4. Troubleshoot connection problems. Modem connection diagnostics

    Unfortunately, the operating system cannot always correctly determine the reason for an unsuccessful connection to the Network. In most cases, she recommends checking that the username (account) and password for logging into the system are entered correctly. Most often, the connection actually breaks down for this reason, so if the connection is unsuccessful, you need to double-check the entered credentials.

    NOTE

    One of the most common mistakes is having spaces at the beginning or end of the username and password. This is not always noticeable and the name appears to be spelled correctly.

    If the entered credentials are correct, but there is still no connection to the Internet, you need to make sure that the Internet connection settings are correct. Its parameters can be viewed by selecting Properties from the context menu of the Internet connection.

    When connecting via modem, the following parameters must be set:

    Type of remote access server to be connected (Network tab) – PPP: Windows 95/98/NT4/2000, Internet (Fig. 1.2);

    Rice. 1.2. Options network connection

    Additional parameters: Log on to the network checkbox – unchecked, Software data compression – checked, Encrypted password required – checked;

    Valid network protocols: NetBEUI checkbox – unchecked, IPX/SPX-compatible – unchecked, TCP/IP – checked;

    TCP/IP protocol parameters (Properties button) – the following settings must be present: IP address is assigned by the server, Addresses are assigned by the server;

    Also check the following boxes: Use IP header compression, Use standard gateway for remote network.

    If you encounter problems connecting to the Internet, you will usually receive an error message from which you can determine probable cause problems. First, you should find out at what stage the communication connection is interrupted, and then try to troubleshoot the problem.

    Possible problems when connecting to the Internet

    Let's consider the most typical problems, which may occur when trying to log into the Network.

    The connection does not reach dialing

    The modem may not be connected, not configured, or is being used by another program.

    NOTE

    If the modem is not connected to a telephone line, it should usually start dialing the number and only then report the absence of a dial tone.

    You need to check the status of the modem in Device Manager and then diagnose it. To do this, double-click on the modem icon in Device Manager, in the window that appears, go to the Diagnostics tab and click the Query modem button. With the modem configured correctly, after a few seconds you should see the survey result on the screen. If unsuccessful, try again after restarting your computer.

    The connection is lost while dialing a number

    This most likely means that the user's modem is unable to communicate with the ISP's modem. You should call your provider on the same phone number with regular phone. If it is impossible to get through or, having reached you, you did not hear the special sound of a working modem, then the problem is in the telephone line or the provider is temporarily not working or is overloaded.

    If you successfully call your provider from a regular phone, check that the modem is connected to the telephone line and that the number in the connection properties is correct.

    ADVICE

    Check the dialing type. If the telephone exchange does not support tone dialing, then you need to add Latin letter“p” at the beginning of the number and try connecting again.

    Most modems allow you to listen to the connection progress through the built-in speaker. Experienced users can distinguish between the sound of dialing and the response of the provider's modem by ear, which allows them to more accurately determine the problem that has arisen.

    The reasons for the connection failure at this stage may be interference on the telephone line, as well as incorrect setting or modem malfunction. Try connecting to other phone numbers or connecting to a different provider.

    There is a connection, but when checking the username and password, the connection is lost

    If you previously logged into the Internet using your username and password saved in the system, and checking the username and password took quite a long time, then you should restart your computer and try to connect again. If the password and login are entered anew each time, you need to check the entered information again.

    ADVICE

    Please note that you have not pressed Caps key Lock. Remember that there are different uppercase and lowercase letters in your password—type them accordingly. Also check if the keyboard layout is in English.

    To make sure that the password you are entering is correct, enter it in any text editor(Notebook, Microsoft Word etc.), select and transfer it to the connection window via the clipboard.

    Connecting to the Network is sometimes impossible due to the banal lack of money in the user’s account.

    When establishing a connection to the Internet, a message appears: “The protocol cannot be found among the protocols specified for of this type server"

    This information means that the TCP/IP network protocol is installed incorrectly or not installed at all. In addition, unnecessary network protocols may be installed, possibly leading to conflicts and additional time delays when attempting to connect. You need to check if the TCP/IP protocol is installed.

    The connection to the Internet is established normally, but when you try to use any service, an error message appears

    The TCP/IP connection may not be established. Check that all required settings are correct. To find out whether the connection is established, you need to type the command ping google.com in the Start program window (Start? Run).

    When normal established connection the answer should be:

    Exchange of packages with google.com of 32 bytes;

    Reply from 64.233.187.99: number of bytes=32 time=214ms TTL=254;

    Reply from 64.233.187.99: number of bytes=32 time=2214ms TTL=254;

    Reply from 64.233.187.99: number of bytes=32 time=2514ms TTL=254;

    Reply from 64.233.187.99: number of bytes=32 time=236ms TTL=254.

    If there is no connection, a message will appear: Unknown IP address google.com.

    Communication with the Network is not established or is unstable, often interrupted, and the data transfer speed is very low

    The most likely problem here is the quality of the telephone line or incorrect modem settings. Old analogue PBXs have problems with connection quality, which can cause frequent disconnection from the Internet, as well as slow work. To solve the problem, you need to optimally configure the modem to match the parameters of the telephone line.

    For example, if the quality of your Internet connection with a speed of 33.6 Kbps is unsatisfactory, you can reduce it using the modem settings. To do this, display the connection settings window (in the Network and remote network access window, select Properties from the connection context menu). On the General tab, click the Settings button under your modem's name. In the window that opens, you need to set another parameter: Highest speed. Using this parameter, you can adjust the modem connection speed to achieve more stable connection quality.

    When you try to connect, a message appears: “Error connecting to the server” or “The modem was not detected,” although the modem did not even have time to dial the number

    If the modem is installed correctly and the test passes normally when you click the Diagnostics button, then most likely there are problems with setting up remote access in Windows and you need to reinstall this system component.

    After checking the username and password, a message appears: “The protocol is incorrectly configured” or “The server type is incorrectly specified”

    This information also indicates problems with setting up remote access in Windows. Display your connection's advanced settings window, make sure the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) checkbox is checked. If there are other checkboxes, they need to be unchecked. In the TCP/IP protocol properties window, on the Advanced tab, check the Use as default box.

    After the connection is established, the Internet reports that the server was not found or that it could not connect to the server. The mail program works

    You need to check your proxy server settings. In the Internet Properties window, click the LAN Settings button. In the window that opens, uncheck all the boxes in the areas Automatic setup and Proxy server.

    Windows Remote Access Error Codes

    If the modem does not connect to the Internet, then not only an error message appears on the screen, but also its number, which can be used to diagnose the problem that arose during the Internet connection much more accurately.

    Most typical mistakes remote access are as follows.

    600 The started operation is not completed - it has occurred internal error, restart your computer to ensure that any recent configuration changes have taken effect.

    602 The specified port is already open - The COM port that should be used by the network connection is already in use by another active network connection or process (for example, a telephone line monitoring program, such as a fax program). You need to shut down the application that is blocking the COM port.

    606 The specified port is not connected - an internal error has occurred, you must also restart the computer or try to reconnect to the Internet.

    607 Invalid event detected - this problem is resolved as in the previous case.

    625 The system detected invalid data in the phone book file - the Rasphone.pbk phone book file may be damaged. Delete it from the C:\WINDOWS\system32\ras folder, then restart the Dial-up Network Access program to create a new one phone book.

    628 The connection was closed - if connecting via a telephone line, try connecting again. If the message continues to appear, then try reducing the initial speed of the modem and turning it off additional settings.

    629 Connection was closed remote computer– the connection could be interrupted due to one of the following reasons:

    fatal telephone line error;

    line noise;

    disabled by the system administrator;

    failed attempt to connect to the remote access server modem at the selected speed.

    To retry the connection, click the Redial button. If this error subsequently occurs, you need to reduce the modem connection speed to 9600 Kbps, and then try to call again. You can also connect to another server to determine if the problem is specific to the server you are trying to call. It's also worth trying to connect to your server from a different phone line.

    634 Failed to register the computer on the remote network - the remote access server cannot register the name of your computer on the Network. This situation occurs due to problems with the NetBIOS protocol, but can also happen with the TCP/IP or IPX protocols. This usually happens if such an IP address is already used on the Internet - you need to contact your provider.

    636 The device connected to the port is not as expected - the user's hardware configuration and the configuration settings for the connection may be incompatible with each other. If you replaced any of network equipment (serial port or modem), then check the Dial-up Network Access configuration.

    646 Login at this time of day for the user with this account is not allowed – account user is configured in such a way that access to the Network is limited by time of day (for example, only possible during certain hours).

    647 Account disabled - The user account has been disabled. This could happen due to multiple repeated failed connection attempts. System administrator could also deactivate the account for security reasons (or for non-payment). This problem This can only be decided with the provider.

    649 Account does not have rights to dial – the account does not have rights to access the server for one of the following reasons:

    the account on the selected server is valid, but you do not have remote access rights to the Network;

    the account has expired and has been disabled, or your remote access has been terminated;

    you are trying to connect to the server at an unauthorized time of day, the number of connection attempts has exceeded the maximum allowed, or your account does not allow remote login;

    account settings can prevent connections, such as allowing connections only from certain telephone numbers(the remote computer can only allow connections to local accounts).

    676 Phone line is busy - redial the number or automate the call on the Properties tab in the connection settings.

    678 No response received - the modem or other device does not pick up the handset. Check the phone number you are calling and redial it, and make sure that telephone line connected to the correct modem socket.

    680 No dial tone - the telephone line may be incorrectly connected to the modem or disconnected from it. The number may need to be preceded by a prefix, for example, 9 to access an external line, or the number may be too long. Make sure that the telephone line is plugged into the correct jack on the modem and that there is no intermittent tone on the telephone line corresponding to an answering machine message.

    691 Access is denied because the user name or password is not valid on this domain - the account may not be registered on the specified domain, the user's password may have expired, or the information may be entered incorrectly. If you did not specify a domain, the remote access server attempts to validate your username and password against the domain of which you are a member. Please enter all information carefully.

    720 The connection attempt failed because the connected and local computers PPP control protocols could not be negotiated—there are no PPP control network protocols configured for your connection, or the appropriate network protocol has not been installed. This error may occur after changing network protocol during the software update process.

    721 The remote computer is not responding—an attempt was made to start a PPP conversation, but the remote computer is not responding. This malfunction may also indicate hardware failures of your computer or remote server.

    735 The requested address was rejected by the server - your connection is configured to request a specific IP address. The server is not configured to allow the client to request such addresses, or the specific IP address is already in use by another client. To avoid addressing conflicts, you should use DHCP.

    736 The remote computer has terminated the control protocol - the PPP channel control protocol dialog started, but was terminated at the request of the remote computer. The error may be caused by problems on the server.

    770 The remote computer rejected the connection attempt - the remote computer may be refusing to connect due to settings calling program or other hardware settings.

    771 The connection attempt failed because the network is congested - in this case, you need to wait and try to connect again.

    774 The connection attempt failed due to a temporary error. Try connecting again - such an error may be due to a timeout or problems with the remote computer.

    1.5. Internet connection utilities

    To connect to your provider, you can use regular means operating system - a program built into operating system, – Remote network access. However, these functions of the standard Windows component and are limited.

    For a more comfortable Internet connection, it is better to use special program. Such applications can perform scheduled tasks, launch required applications when establishing a connection, sort dial-up numbers and much more. Typically, some of their features are not needed by most users. However, it is very convenient to have a complete set of tools, because a function that is unnecessary today may become extremely necessary tomorrow.

    VDialer

    The VDialer utility (http://v-programs.narod.ru/) is not just a program for dialing. Its functions include many other service capabilities, one way or another designed for working on the Internet when accessed via a dial-up channel. After installation, VDialer imports all previously created remote connections.

    The program window consists of several tabs designed to create a connection. To dial using VDialer, on the Home tab, you must select the created connection and click the Call button (Fig. 1.3). In this case, on the Settings tab you need to enter the user login and password. While browsing the Internet, the VDialer window is constantly displayed on the screen, which indicates the time the user has been online.

    Rice. 1.3. VDialer window

    The program allows you to set several dial-up numbers for one remote connection. If the call attempt fails, the program will sequentially try the specified numbers. Multi-user mode allows you to work with multiple accounts. For each of them, you can store separate usernames and passwords, as well as keep statistics on the time spent on the Internet.

    For users who count their expenses, VDialer offers a convenient system of statistics of time spent on the Internet and money spent. You can view this data on the Statistics tab. On the Settings tab, using the Connection settings button, you can set payment rates for different connections. This opportunity especially convenient if you use the services of several providers who charge different fees depending on access time and sometimes days of the week, for example providing discounts on weekends.

    VDialer allows you to set the fee per hour spent on the Internet, not only depending on the time, but also for each day of the week. The program scheduler will help you set the time at which VDialer will have to connect to the Internet on its own or interrupt the connection.

    The utility is capable of testing the level of security of user passwords, so you can check the degree of their accessibility spyware. The antivirus built into the program is no less important.

    Network services occupy a large part of the list of VDialer capabilities. To open the network services window, on the Settings tab, click the Network service button. Network services utilities are designed to monitor the connection process and determine various network parameters. Among them are host pinging (estimating the transmission time of information when connecting), a WhoIS service designed to obtain data about any existing addresses or domain names on the Internet, and an IP tracer.

    The graphical analyzer of communication channels will clearly display its quality, congestion and interference. The POP3 Mail tab is a convenient addition to standard features mail program. If the user receives email through a POP3 server, then VDialer can report the presence of new emails on the server - you just need to specify the POP3 server address, username and password. This feature allows you to check three boxes simultaneously.

    Muxasoft Dialer

    The Muxasoft Dialer program (http://www.muxasoft.com/) has been known since 1998. The first two versions of the utility were a great success, although at that time the Internet was still something new and unusual. After a complete suspension of the project for almost five years, the fourth version of the program was recently released, to which the authors made significant changes.

    After launching Muxasoft Dialer, its icon appears in the notification area and work is carried out through context menu programs. To dial, select the Call item. You can manage connections and operating modes of the utility using the Settings menu. The Settings subsection in the Connections section allows you to specify several phones for one connection, which the program will try in case of problems or errors. In addition, you can set time intervals during which you do not need to try to connect to the provider (Fig. 1.4).

    Rice. 1.4. Muxasoft Dialer settings window

    Muxasoft Dialer allows you to set actions to be performed after connection, such as launching or closing applications, playing a sound file, etc. After selecting a task, you can specify the name and path of the application file or sound file. The program's statistics system allows you not only to set flexible settings for hourly payment for Internet use, but also to specify the tariff in case of payment for traffic.

    The creators of Muxasoft Dialer took care of the safety of their users. Parameters for encrypting login, password and domain are set in the Security section. The Limitations section controls data transfer, connection speed and time spent on the Internet. By setting the values in this section, you can configure automatic connection termination if the actual connection parameters do not match the specified ones. Using the scheduler, they create a schedule for the program, according to which the utility connects to the Internet, launches applications and disconnects from the Internet.

    The connection status can be displayed in a special floating window, which is launched after selecting Monitor settings. Here you can see information about the connection status, speed and amount spent.

    EType Dialer

    The EType Dialer program (http://gorlach.etype.net/edialer/) has standard capabilities - it imports operating system connections, allows you to dial several phone numbers if it is impossible to connect to the Internet using the first one. You can configure the phone list on the Connection tab using the Add, Edit and Delete buttons (Fig. 1.5). The utility allows you to configure the launch of one or more programs after connection.

    Rice. 1.5. Connection tab options

    Using EType Dialer, you do not need to constantly monitor the connection process, which can be quite lengthy, especially if the provider is busy for a long time and communication is impossible. The program allows you to configure a sound alert that plays both when you connect to the Internet and when the connection is lost. To do this, on the Sound tab, in the Signal when connecting to the Internet section, you need to set the switch to the Play signal position and, using the Browse button, select a file.

    EType Dialer keeps statistics of the time spent on the Internet, but does not count the money spent - the Statistics tab displays the total time spent on the Internet, as well as the time for the last month, week and day. The same data is displayed for each selected connection.

    InetDialer

    The InetDialer program (http://softmacro.h1.ru) has a rich set of functions that meet almost all needs that arise when using a dial-up connection to the Internet. Among them: maintaining statistics and a log file, calculating tariffs for time and traffic, user profiles, task scheduler, pinging servers, support for plug-ins, synchronizing system time with a special server. When working with the utility, various communication and application launch options are also available.

    HDialer

    HDialer (http://hdialer.narod.ru) is a multifunctional program for connecting to the Internet. With its help, dialing the provider is very simple - just double-click on the icon executable file.

    You can use the utility without even installing the application on your computer. Conveniently organizes work with multiple log files for one connection. However, callback is not supported, so if your provider allows a callback connection (after logging into the Network, the callback is considered incoming, so the user pays not for the time spent on the Internet, but for the minutes of the telephone connection), you can use HDialer you can't.

    Once connected to the Internet, HDialer is able to automatically launch applications ( mail client, browser, etc.), and when disabled, close them. You can work according to a schedule - on a certain day and time, the utility will connect itself, automatically adjust the system clock, and do much more.

    HDialer has a Keep alive feature that prevents forced shutdown from the Internet even with a relatively long absence of response from the server. No less useful features: Keep a log file, count the time spent on the Internet, display the connection speed.

    SP Dialer

    The SP Dialer program (http://www.spdialer.com/ru/) is quite handy tool dialing to the provider with a dial-up connection. SP Dialer supports several connections at once, the parameters of which can be easily edited directly in the program window.

    SP Dialer can import existing connections in the system. A convenient application launch manager allows you to create a list of programs that launch automatically after connecting to the Internet. On the Sound tab, you can configure the sounds with which the program will notify you about the connection being established and disconnected. SP Dialer offers convenient connection statistics, which are maintained not only by time, but also by traffic (Fig. 1.6).

    In the additional settings section of the program, pauses are set between repeated calls if the telephone line is busy, and their number is also limited. The utility saves information about dialing attempts and connections in special file. In this case, you can choose the type of information to be saved - record both all connections and general statistics for the day, week or month.

    Rice. 1.6. SP Dialer utility window

    The program supports multi-user mode, and each user can install for himself personal settings dialing parameters. In addition, the utility includes a module for synchronizing the time installed on the computer.

    FlexibleSoft Dialer

    FlexibleSoft Dialer (http://rus.flexiblesoft.com) – small, but powerful program dialing the provider. During installation of the utility, you are asked to select the type of connection to use. Installation involves downloading additional modules from the program website, so you can install FlexibleSoft Dialer only in Internet connection mode.

    After installing the program, the wizard will launch manual settings. In addition to dialing to the provider, FlexibleSoft Dialer can perform some other, equally important tasks presented in three menus - Settings, Connection and Statistics (Fig. 1.7).

    In the Connection menu you can set additional options Internet connections, such as automatically retrying communication when the line is busy or disconnected. The program also allows you to set traffic restrictions: in case the connection is too slow (if the traffic is beyond certain time less than permissible), you can set automatic disconnection and try to connect again. In addition, all information about connection attempts can be stored in a special protocol file.

    Rice. 1.7. FlexibleSoft Dialer program interface

    Using the scheduler, you can set up your Internet connection on a schedule. The program also allows you to create a list of applications that will automatically launch when connected. All functions of FlexibleSoft Dialer can be supplemented with audio signals, while indicating the time when they do not need to be played, for example late in the evening.

    The utility can also ping sites and synchronize system time computer via the Internet.

    FlexibleSoft Dialer allows you not only to receive information about the time spent on the Internet and traffic spent using a special Monitor module, but also to keep track of the money spent. To set up tariffs, there is a special tab in the Statistics menu. You can set tariffs for different days and hours, and additionally for workdays and weekends. The resulting log file can be easily imported into Microsoft format Excel.

    1.6. Connection optimizers

    Usually when connecting to an ISP standard program remote access does not use all the reserves of the operating system and communication channels. Windows has the ability to increase the speed of your computer's connection to the Internet by 25–30%. Operating system developers do not know how the user's computer will be connected to the Internet in the future - according to local network or using a modem. Based on this, the internal settings of the operating system are set in such a way as to find a “golden mean” between both connection methods. Special programs that optimize Internet connections allow you to find hidden reserves and increase the speed of your Internet connection.

    Turbo Internet

    Rice. 1.18. TMeter program settings

    NOTE

    The program is unlikely to work inexperienced users due to the difficulty of working with it.

    To configure and view information about connections in the program directory, you need to select the Management Console section. In the window that opens, you must specify access parameters network service TMeter to see statistics and monitoring results of Internet connections. To view detailed information and indicate the cost of working on the Internet, you must launch the TMeter Service Monitor module. When launched, the program icon is located in the notification area, from where you can manage the viewing of statistics, setting up schedules and tariffs for Internet connections.

    In the program settings, you can specify folders for storing monthly reports, which are generated in the form of XML files (if desired, statistics are also possible in the form of graphs). Important parameter program operation, which is also set in its settings – range local IP addresses. By setting the correct values in the IP Address Groups subsection, you will separate local and Internet traffic.

    The program has the function of detailed analysis of Internet traffic, as a result of which you can determine which of the running applications loads the Internet channel the most. Having determined this, you need to limit the operating speed using TMeter this application.

    In addition, the program allows you to configure the use of a firewall when browsing the Internet, view delayed packets, apply filters to generate reports, and perform other advanced tasks.

    Netstat Live

    Netstat Live (http://www.analogx.com) operates in Windows services XP, so its interface resembles command line. This traffic meter works great with both dial-up, LAN or DSL connections.

    The program most reliably displays the current congestion of the Internet channel, presenting information in batches in a continuous mode. In addition, Netstat Live blocks traffic when a specified limit is reached.

    Du Meter

    The Du Meter program (http://www.dumeter.com) is the most universal of all those described in this chapter, as it allows you to track statistics not only of telephone connections, but also of other types of Internet connections, for example, via a leased line.

    It places its icon and a small window in the notification area and, by changing its color, signals network activity and also demonstrates it on a special graph.

    Du Meter presents detailed information about Internet connections - you can see statistics of the current day and the current connection by time spent on the Internet, as well as by outgoing and incoming traffic. Additionally, the program generates weekly and monthly reports with information about Internet connections.

    In addition, special sections allow you to predict the statistics of Internet connections - you can calculate what the daily traffic should be in order to ultimately reach the required amount and not exceed the specified limit (Fig. 1.19).

    Rice. 1.19. Internet connection statistics in Du Meter

    In the Du Meter settings, you can set the location of the information window and its appearance - numerical or graphical display of traffic and the frequency of reports. Special function The program notifies the user when a specified amount of traffic has been exceeded or reports if the traffic for a specified time is too small. Notification methods include playing a sound signal or displaying a pop-up message. For modem connections, the program allows you to keep a connection log, indicating the connection time and statistics - the volume of received and transmitted traffic and the time spent on the Internet.

    NetMeter

    The NetMeter program (http://readerror.gmxhome.de) has a very similar interface to the previous one, but is a much more functional product. The main difference between NetMeter and similar programs of this class is that it is focused primarily on counting traffic, and not on tracking time spent on the Internet.

    ADVICE

    It is recommended to work with this program if you use DSL or broadband internet over a dedicated line. When working with a dial-up connection, NetMeter is unlikely to be able to provide all the necessary information.

    After launch, the program places its icon in the notification area, and its thumbnail information window, which shows a graph of Internet traffic, is in the lower right part of the screen.

    To view Internet traffic statistics, you need to use the Total item. The tabs of the window that appears provide data on traffic (incoming, outgoing and total) for the current day, week or month. In addition, the program calculates the total data and predicts traffic values (Projected tab). Information about traffic can be viewed not only in a numerical value (total), but also in table form - for this there are special tabs in the program window: daily reports, weekly reports and month reports.

    The program allows you to customize the interface. You can select the All interfaces option from the list - displaying both telephone and cable connections. The Dial-Up Interfaces Only option means counting dial-up connection traffic (Figure 1.20).

    Rice. 1.20. Configuring Displayed Parameters in NetMeter

    In the program settings, you can set the function of informing the user when the limit is exceeded, as well as set parameters for displaying traffic volume and a number of other features.

    The Data transferred this month item is very convenient, allowing you to set a monthly traffic limit. By checking the Traffic volume limit checkbox, you can check daily whether the optimal daily limit has been reached.

    It is convenient to work via the Internet. But communication in catering establishments and on free wifi points can be slow and unstable. There is a way out. Today we decided to tell you how to keep your Internet connection speed up. high level, and compiled a rating of the relevant applications (in descending order).

    All programs are compatible with Windows and high-speed DSL modems. Be careful when choosing an Internet accelerator - many of them are only compatible with dial-up connections (this is a connection via telephone network, low speed and unpopular, especially in big cities).

    1. Throttle

    Our team independently tested all the programs, and Throttle turned out to be the best - it has the simplest and most intuitive interface. You need to select the modem type, connection, operating system and press the GO button - the program will do the rest itself! The speed increases by as much as 120%, the connection has become more stable. It is possible to increase the speed up to 200% - the main thing is that there are no restrictions on the modem.

    2. Internet Accelerator

    The Internet Accelerator program has three advantages:

    Clear interface
    + good design
    + functionality; During testing, the speed increased by as much as two times, which is quite noticeable.

    3.DSL Speed

    The DSL Speed program is suitable for DSL modems - unlike many similar programs. It independently checks modems and their settings, automatically adjusting Internet speed to maximum. Tested for private wifi point - everything works, but sometimes there are interruptions that are solved by rebooting the program or system.

    4.BeFaster

    The BeFaster program, in addition to the advantages that an Internet accelerator should have, has the function of creating visibility of activity, this prevents loss of connection even if you are away from the computer. Some providers disconnect the connection when the user is inactive. In addition, it is possible to select the interface language in the program - but for the rest you will have to look for a localization if you don’t get along with English. This program was tested at a university wifi point, which already allows you to play at 2-4 MB/s when downloading files, and with the accelerator the Internet generally flew. One of the minuses is the ugly design of the program.

    5. Internet Cyclone

    Internet Cyclone prevents data fragmentation during transmission, increasing Internet speed. Works with all modems, including high-speed ones. The program has many functions, which, on the one hand, gives many opportunities, on the other hand, a bunch of windows and buttons complicate the use of the program for an inexperienced user. However, manufacturers promise an increase in speed of up to 200%. My speed has increased, but obviously not by 200%.

    Well, with fast internet The main thing is to quickly be able to say “Thank you”: we will be glad to receive your questions, thanks or comments!
